A key part of learning to read is recognizing, pronouncing and understanding commonly used words in the English language. n Rhyme with your child. n Make it fun. Don’t drill sight words with your child. The process of reading and learning to read shouldn’t be a chore. You can create simple, fun activities for your child to learn.

1. Make letter stamps for your child and give him or her a piece of paper. Ask him or her to spell a word such as “sat,” and he or she will spell it by stamping the letters onto the piece of paper.

2. Have your child collect sea shells on the beach. Clean the shells, write letters on the shells, and use them to spell the sight words. You can talk about your trip to the beach while you are practicing.

3. Use sidewalk chalk to spell words. You can even play ABC hopscotch to help your child learn.

ith summertime around the corner, it is time to start thinking about what your child will be doing this summer, and make sure reading is a top priority.

Reading over the summer allows children to build on the knowledge that they learned during the school year. If children don’t read over the summer, they likely will forget some of what they learned during the year.

Daisy Mitchell, a tutor at Dillard Street Elementary who trains the teachers in the Lively Letters program, says summer reading can even help with phonics, provided children read aloud to their parents.

“A lot of parents think that once their child is in first grade or second grade, their children stop reading aloud,” Mitchell says. “But what you want to do is make sure they’re still pronouncing those words correctly.”

CONSISTENCY COUNTS n Set aside a time. In a busy summer, parents should set aside a time each day for reading. If possible, be sure to set the example and read as well during this time. n Finish a novel in about two weeks.

If your child is spending months on finishing a novel, he or she likely isn’t enjoying the book or the book is too difficult. n Set a minimum page count. If your child wants to read 25 pages per day, take the number of pages in the book and divide it by 25. If your child can finish that book in about two weeks, he or she is on the right track. If he or she cannot finish in three weeks at the most, consider reading more pages per day or finding a different book. n Look into the classics. Summer is a good time to expose your child to classic novels. To find an ageappropriate classic for your child, talk to your local librarian or get ideas from Pinterest. n Ask reading comprehension questions. Refrain from asking dry questions such as, “What is the setting of the book?” Instead, make it conversation-like. Ask about what’s happening in the book and make sure you follow up a few days later. Ask, “So what happened to Sue? Did she end up making that tough decision?”

Restrooms are available during park hours. n Dr. Bradford Memorial Park, 220 W. Division St. It has one large covered picnic area with a grill and several other covered picnic tables and short boardwalk. Park hours are 8 a.m. to sundown. Restrooms are open when the park is open. n Centennial Plaza, at the intersection of Boyd and Plant streets.

n Newton Park, 31 W. Garden Ave. behind Tanner Hall. The park has several picnic tables, a covered picnic area, grill, adjacent fenced-in playground, large grassy area for playing games and running around, a boat ramp, two small bridges and a pier over Lake Apopka. Rental facilities are available. Farnsworth Pool is located on the grounds and is open for public swimming during summer months. The park is always open, and restrooms (located near the boat landing) are open during the day and on weekends (until dusk). n The city has built an interactive Splash Pad and pavilion downtown at 230 S. Lakeview Ave. The splash pad is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (with a change of hours in the winter months). Pets, food and drinks are prohibited at the splash pad. The pavilion is used for city events, such as the weekly Farmers’ Market, and is not available for private rentals.

It has a playground, picnic table, park benches and parking. n Fernwood Park is on Lake Butler with the entrance on Seventh Avenue and Butler Street. It provides access to the town boat ramp and features a boat dock and parking. (Boat trailer parking is prohibited.) n Lake Down Boat Ramp is located on Conroy-Windermere Road, just east of Windermere and across from the main entrance to Isleworth. There is a free boat ramp to launch boats into Lake Down and limited parking with a handicap permit. n Lake Street Park is at the end of Fifth Avenue at Lake Street adjacent to the end of the trail along Lake Down.

The park features a walking trail, park benches, a fishing pier, picnic tables and a swing. n Parramore Park is on Main Street between Fifth and Seventh avenues.

Hull Ave., is ready for play. It currently has a lighted basketball court, a 1,000-squarefoot pavilion featuring eight picnic tables (two are disabled accessible) and four grills, a new KaBOOM! playground and various wooden structures with seating around the park. The basketball court recently underwent a facelift with a no-slip court surface paint and new nets.

Adventurous children can now enjoy the new 45- by 70-foot playground, which includes a 360-degree spiral slide, sky rail, tire swing, multiple climbers, cliffhanger and a scavenger hunt panel. n Speer Park, 331 N. Tubb St., the largest and oldest of all the Oakland parks, was established at the time of the original Town Plat in 1887.

Heritage Day and the Santa Day and Christmas Sing-Along are held there each year. The park contains sidewalks for strolling through the mature oaks and palm trees, grills and picnic tables, a rentable gazebo for special events and a castlethemed playground, which includes swings and slides. For the more sports-minded, a tennis court and basketball half-court are available, or guests can utilize any of the ample open space to create their own football, soccer or volleyball game. n VanderLey Park, 117 Gulley Ave. In addition to the 500,000-gallon water-storage tank and pumping station, the park boasts two pavilions, picnic tables, grills and benches within a meandering path of sidewalks, which connects to the West Orange Trail. This park is located near the town’s center, which contains Historic Town Hall, Oakland Town Hall, public parking for trail access and the town’s meeting hall with an outdoor gazebo. Both Historic Town Hall and the Meeting Hall are rentable spaces for summer events.

Hiawassee Road and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $4 per car or only $2 if it’s just the driver. n Eagle Nest Park at 5165 MetroWest Blvd., near Eagle Nest Elementary School, features baseball fields and is the home of MetroWest Little League. n Rose Place is located at 8200 Old Winter Garden Road at the corner of Apopka-Vineland Road. n The 440-acre Tibet-Butler Preserve is located on 8777 Winter Garden-Vineland Road. Visitors can experience various forms of nature along six trails and boardwalks leading to Osprey Outlook on Lake Tibet-Butler. There are also exhibits inside the Vera Carter Environmental Center. The preserve is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Saturday.
