Before it was Page’s Pastiques, the store was home to J.S. “Shorty” Reddick’s market. The general store was built in 1928 and for years had a potbellied stove locals sat around playing checkers. One rumor tells of a tunnel running from the store to the house across the street where “hootch” was stored during the days of Prohibition, but this story could never be substantiated.

ood old-fashioned detective work — engineered by the West Orange Narcotics Task Force — led to a historic drug bust in Winter Garden.

The daylong warrant roundup of 26 suspected drug dealers was the result of a six-month investigation, which included work of undercover detectives from the Ocoee and Winter Garden police departments, as well as the support and resources provided by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

OCSO Sheriff Jerry Demings lauded the task force’s hard work and the implication of their success.

“The message we’re sending here is if you want to engage in illegal drug trafficking, we don’t want any place in Orange County to exist for you to be able to do so,” Demings said, adding that the arrests of the 26 individuals would improve the quality of life for many in the east Winter Garden community.

As OCSO’s swat team and WONTF spent an eight-hour day conducting the warrant roundup on March 29, they found and seized eight firearms, more than 14 grams of heroin, more than 18 grams of powder cocaine and more than 28 grams of crack cocaine, Xanax and oxycodone and cannabis.

The investigation produced 71 charges built against a total of 31 suspects charged with the sale and delivery of multiple illegal

“It’s no easy task, what these agents were able to do — investigating to make these arrests,” said Capt. Carlos Espinosa, the WONTF commander. “That is a very tight-knit community, and it’s hard to go out there and buy drugs from there, because they all know each other and they’re usually very careful about who they sell drugs to, which makes it very hard to catch them. this time some of them will get some better punishments.”

Winter Garden Lt. Scott Allen said the safety of the undercover detectives and appropriate documentation are paramount when conducting an investigation of this magnitude.

“The biggest challenge … is to make sure you’re documenting your evidence properly, you’re taking good images and good notes that are detailed so that the ultimate outcome is not a waste of time,” Allen said. “So that when these arrests are made, these people don’t get released because of an error. And that’s the biggest challenge in any investigation — to make sure you’re submitting everything correctly and doing the best you can to keep these people off the street.”

WHAT ABOUT DEMAND? Although cutting off drug supply is an important part of the equation, lawenforcement officials know it’s only half of the problem.

During her 2017 State of the County Address on Friday, April 7, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said agencies must be as vigilant in attacking the demand for drugs, as well. Jacobs helped launched the Orange County Heroin Task Force to address an alarming spike in heroin overdoses.

“Here’s the reality: Our local law enforcement continues to pursue dealers that prey on the addicted,” Jacobs said during her speech. “But we recognized that if we concentrated only on trying to cut off the supply — without also addressing the demand, we would never be successful.”

Jacobs went on to identify the task force’s recent progress, including state lobbying for use of Naloxone and Vivitrol by local law enforcement. Naloxone is known to counteract the effects of heroin and has aided officers in saving more than 80 lives, while Vivitrol, she continued, has proven useful in helping individuals suffering from heroin addiction.

Ocoee leaders endorse plan to guide growth GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER

City leaders have readied a document detailing the city’s goals and objectives, along with recommended policy changes, called the Evaluation and Appraisal Report.

According to state law, every jurisdiction must evaluate its progress in meeting the goals and polices outlined in its current comprehensive plan and then determine what, if any, changes are required.

During the April 4 Ocoee City Commission meeting, city staff presented the resulting report to the city commissioners for its first reading as ordinance 201703. Commissioners gave their unanimous approval to transmit the report to the Department of Economic Opportunity.

According to the EAR, the proposed main goals are to promote an economic strategy that paves the way for more business creation; enhance the city’s character, identity and livability through neighborhood planning programs that establish planning policies and guidelines for growth; and develop a transportation system that supports Ocoee’s character and satisfies residents’ desired quality of life.

To fulfill those goals, staff identified issues the city could target with revisions, which included community character and design, conservation, neighborhood revitalization, utility infrastructure, transportation connectivity and mixed-use employment and commercial centers.

To promote an economic development program, the report details policies intended to enhance the continued use of intergovernmental collaboration and tax incentives, as well as a streamlined review and permitting process for the types of businesses the city targets.

The complainant, an employee of the store, informed the officer the person in question had previously walked out without paying for merchandise on numerous occasions. The employee did not want to press charges for the previous thefts but did state the store wanted the male trespassed. The man told the officer he did not have identification on him. While walking toward the store exit, the officer noticed the man, who was following behind, make a quick movement and realized the man had placed a DVD atop a clothing rack and was pulling his hand away. But the man said he did not place the DVD there. As they both approached the exit, the man advanced toward the officer — despite the officer’s commands to stay put — closed the gap between them and ran out the door. According to a store employee, two females had been selecting several items and concealing them inside their purses. The employee reportedly said that during one instance, she heard one of the females say, “Oh this would be a great gift item,” and then proceed to place it in her purse. Officers detained and questioned the two females, a mother and daughter, but both claimed they did not know what the officers were talking about and that they had full intention to pay for the items. A search of the women’s purses produced several items, cosmetic products, batteries and soap totaling $90.95.

D

isco music plays throughout the crowded store as people zigzag their way along the haphazard aisles, the scent of yesterday in the air. A steady stream of curious window shoppers mingle with folks walking in with an exact item in mind — such as the bootclad man looking for pictures frames, with or without the glass.

The calendar is approaching the final weekend of Page’s Pastiques, the 28-year-old “antiques and uniques” store nestled between Winter Garden and Oakland.

One man flips through some loose pages that have come separated from a photo album as old as the music overhead.

“Some things are meant to sell; some are not,” he says, shrugging his shoulders.

SAYING GOODBYE

Jennifer Page and Judy Bergmeier, co-owners of the shop for nearly three decades, have decided it is time to sell their inventory, retire and enjoy life.

“This has been my most fun job that I’ve ever had,” Page said on a recent Saturday. “I never really worried about selling anything, because eventually it sold. But

now I have a deadline, and it’s making me nervous.”

Page’s Pastiques is closing its doors Saturday, April 22. Most of the items have been marked down to 50% off. Page is hoping someone will come forward with an offer to buy the remaining inventory. What doesn’t sell will either be taken to their home in Montverde or sold at auction.

There are shelves of lamp bases and lamp shades, vintage clothing, aprons, tools, knickknacks and tchotchkes and trinkets, vinyls, jewelry, a brass and copper Turkish cooker. The shelves and racks themselves are for sale, as well.

Page grew up with eight siblings, so money was tight, and she developed an appreciation for things that could be repurposed.

“My dad would come home with something he found on the street,” she said. “We never had anything new.”

When she was in her early 20s, she began refinishing furniture in the evenings as a side job. One thing led to another, and she eventually opened her store.

Page and Bergmeier have made a living selling used items. They have stocked their inventory through the years by making trips to the Webster Westside Flea Market and, occasionally, Renninger’s Flea Market and Antique Center in Mount Dora. Phone calls to the shop inquiring about some items someone wanted to sell prompted a visit to the person’s home.

“We buy things outright,” Page said. “I pride myself in being honest with people. If I didn’t think I could get something out of it, I would tell them, and I think they

Some unusual merchandise has found its way to the store, including snow toboggans, a bicycle with an ice cream box in front and an old florist’s handcart. They all sold.

“We have people who come in almost on a daily basis,” Page said. “Some come in weekly, some monthly, some when they come into town. We get to know them over the years. They come in and know what they’re looking for.”

The weather Saturday afternoon drew folks to outdoor festivals and events, and customers wandered into the store to take a peek. Among them was Dennis Mahler, who once opened the shop with Page each morning. On this particular day, he sat in a nearby rocking chair, watching the owners ring up purchases on a mid1800s cash register.

“We’ve had lots of assistance from close friends and family over

the years, and it’s been very much appreciated,” Page said.

At 70 and 68, she and Bergmeier are ready to freely enjoy their days and explore. They have plans to hit the road in their new motor home, having already put more than 4,000 miles on it when they tested it out in the first month.

When Matheus Freitas arrived in Florida five years ago, he had no friends and spoke no English.

And food was one of the things he missed most, he said.

“We didn’t have a place to go that was close to home where we could eat (Brazilian) food,” said Freitas, a waiter at the Pinotti’s and a sophomore at West Orange High School.

Today, he speaks English with hardly any trace of an accent, but that doesn’t mean he’s abandoned his roots.

“It’s my country, and you have to love your country,” Freitas said about Brazil.

While at work, he often chats in Portuguese with customers, which he said is a nice relief from speaking and hearing English all the time, he said.

“If you want to sit back and eat good food with friends, this is a good place to do it,” he said.

But no matter who comes through the doors, the staff treats everyone like family.

“We want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy their food and drinks,” said Andre Melo, general manager of the restaurant.

Pinotti’s Pizza officially opened Feb. 17, filling the space that Bates New England Seafood & Steakhouse vacated late last year on Winter Garden-Vineland Road.

So far, the business has been a success, Melo said, and he attributes that to Pinotti’s fresh ingredients. The tomato sauce is made in-house from tomatoes, new batches of dough are rolled out daily, and ingredients are shipped in multiple times a week.

What makes a pizza Brazilian is the combination of a thinner crust, the homemade tomato sauce and the wide variety of ingredients familiar to Brazil.

While the menu does have the typical pizza variety — such as cheese and pepperoni — it also features a large selection of meat, seafood, vegetable and even dessert pizzas.

One of the most popular pizzas on the menu is frango com catupiry, or chicken with catupiry, which features a thick layer of shredded chicken and a drizzling of catupiry — a Brazilian version of cream cheese.

OAKLAND Charlotte Charfren, the owner of a former bed-andbreakfast inn on North Tubb Street in Oakland, wants to reestablish the inn and create a wellness retreat center for events such as yoga and life-coaching classes, meditation courses, teachertraining workshops, retreats and an occasional wedding.

The Oakland Manor House would be operated by Charfen as medical director, Ramona Crabtree-Falkner as health and wellness program director and Cynthia Schultz as executive chef and resident innkeeper.

Crabtree-Falkner and Schultz appeared before the Oakland Town Commission on March 28 to request a special exception and a change in the zoning, from Single Family Residential to Residential and Neighborhood Commercial.

Winter Garden 19-year-old killed in West Colonial crash

It’s been years since she fell in love with the playwright’s works, and now she’s taking that love to The Big Apple.

After winning first place at the district level of the National Shakespeare Competition, Pedersen, a senior at Olympia High School, is one of 56 students from across the United States who will be competing in the national

competition on May 2.

For the past two years, Pedersen has competed in the National Shakespeare Competition at Olympia and at the district level but had never advanced to the national level.

“I was so shocked,” Pedersen said about her win.

Pedersen’s love of Shakespeare has been years in the making. The first Shakespeare play she read was “Romeo and Juliet,” but she didn’t fall in love until she cracked open “Macbeth.”

“After I read ‘Macbeth’ was really when the light bulb went off,” she said. “It’s so amazing.”

And although most people find the Old English challenging to digest, Pedersen wanted to delve deeper into the unfamiliar language.

“It intrigued me,” she said. “I wanted to know exactly what they were saying.”

Now she has no problem picking up one of Shakespeare’s works and understanding the dialogue and storyline.

It’s a learned skill, she said.

To qualify for the National Shakespeare competition, Pedersen had to prepare 20 lines of a Shakespeare monologue. She choose one of Rosalind’s monologues from “As You Like it.” For the district competition, which included dozens of students from schools across Central Florida, she presented her monologue plus a sonnet.

For the national competition, she will recite both Shakespeare pieces but also will be asked to

If she could choose any one of Shakespeare’s characters to portray in a play, Pedersen’s first choice would be Rosalind from “As You Like it.”

“She is so strong,” Pedersen said. “And her way of encouraging people is so funny.”

But until she can be in a Shakespeare play, Pedersen will continue reading his works.

“It’s another side of theater that’s really, really unique,” she said.

perform a cold reading out of one of Shakespeare’s works. To prepare for the competition, Pedersen spends her days reading random Shakespeare passages.

“If I know the play and the context, it’s easier,” she said of cold readings. “If I have no idea where it’s from, that’s a lot harder.”

One of Shakespeare’s more challenging plays is “Julius Caesar,” Pedersen said.

“There is so much you have to study about the rules and the government,” she said.

But for all her love of Shakespeare, Pedersen has yet to perform in a Shakespeare play. She has been involved in the theater program at Olympia High School since she was a freshman, although her theater days began before high school.

“I started doing it at my church,” Pedersen said. “It was totally the Lord who brought me into that position, and it’s what He’s calling me to do.”

Garden Ave. Children up to age 12 can search for thousands of candy-filled eggs at the free event. undreds of West Orange residents descended upon the cobblestone streets of Winter Garden for the The Bloom & Grow Garden Society’s annual Spring Fever in the Garden.

This year’s festival, held April 8 and 9, featured vendors’ tents and booths lined up along Plant Street selling varieties of flora, gardenthemed art and outdoor home décor.

Attendees also had the chance to participate expert-led panels on topics related to gardening and botany, a silent auction and raffle, munch on delicious food from food trucks, compete in a sidewalk chalk art contest and dance to live music.

Three-year-old Alessandra Lopez became an expert at catching butterflies in the Butafrog Butterfly Exhibit.

pring Fever in the Garden 2017 had to be our best festival yet! It was estimated that we had more than 50,000 attendees Saturday and Sunday.

This year, we formed a Steering Committee to assist in running this event. We met during the summer and throughout the year, working alongside our Spring Fever Committee of 44.

The Olympia High girls water polo team won the school’s first state championship in a girls team sports this past weekend, defeating Gulliver Prep 7-4 in the FHSAA State Championship Game. The Titans finished the season with a perfect 31-0 record.

The West Orange High boys weightlifting team was represented by two athletes last week at the FHSAA State Championships in DeLand.

Seniors Caleb Smith (129 pounds) and Julian Pittman (heavyweight) each were district and regional champions before making it to the state meet.

Smith, appearing at the state meet for a second consecutive year, placed eighth in the state at 129 pounds, lifting 230 pounds for his bench press and 205 pounds for his clean-and-jerk — concluding an impressive career.

“Caleb is a four-year letterman on our weightlifting team,” coach Bob Head said. “As a freshman, he beat out a senior. … He made it last year, had a good experience, and I think that helped him this year.”

In 2016, Smith scratched on his clean-and-jerk and therefore finished toward the bottom of standings — something he used as motivation for this time around.

“Last year was a disappointment because of that, and this year my goal was to come back from that,” Smith said.

Smith, who also was on the cheerleading team this year and competed in water polo and wrestling in years past, said he

West Orange baseball junior Doug Nikhazy achieved a first for the program over the past two weeks, pitching consecutive no-hitters. Nikhazy no-hit the Wekiva Mustangs March 31 in a 13-0 win for the Warriors that lasted five innings. Against Lake Brantley April 7, Nikhazy again tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 win that also lasted five innings. The Warriors are 16-3.

The West Orange softball team beat nationally ranked Scott County April 4, 5-3.

The victory was one of three last week for the Warriors (18-2). West Orange also defeated Wekiva 14-0 April 6 and then defeated The First Academy 15-0 April 7.

M

eeting a professional athlete can be a once-in-alifetime opportunity.

But Bradley Royer, who has been golfing since he was 4, didn’t just get to meet one — he got to be featured in a promotional ad with one.

The unexpected opportunity presented itself last spring, when a marketing agency reached out to the Royers and asked if they would submit photos of Bradley’s

golf swing. They were looking for children to be featured in a golfrelated advertisement. After verifying the company was, in fact, real, the family sent in Bradley’s photos.

That was on a Thursday.

By that following Sunday, the family was informed Bradley was one of the agency’s top picks. If he was chosen, he would have to be in Tampa the next morning for a photo shoot.

Diego Chavez was disappointed when he didn’t make the junior varsity baseball team at West Orange High as a freshman, but he didn’t let that disappointment get the best of him.

Chavez went to work and made the team as a sophomore, and now he leads the Warriors (155) in batting average and RBIs.

How much did getting cut as a freshman motivate you to work harder and make it as a sophomore?

A lot. Trying to make this team, especially, (because) there are a lot of kids who try out — it motivated me a lot.

What did you identify as areas you needed to improve upon to make it as a sophomore?

I had to work a lot on trying to get bigger and trying to build muscle. I especially had to build my hitting up.

Oh, it was amazing — best day ever.

Which of the team’s 15 wins so far have you been most proud?

They’ve all been pretty good games. I think the (two) wins against Lake Brantley were pretty satisfying.

Who is your favorite MLB player?

Jose Altuve, because he’s like 5-foot-7, and he’s really shown that size doesn’t matter on the field.

Shea Moran and the West Orange girls team cruised to a district title last week.

Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams from West Orange High topped the competition at their respective district tournaments last week, earning playoff berths in the state playoffs beginning this week.

The West Orange boys lacrosse team first defeated Apopka in the District 11 Semifinals April 4 at Montverde Academy, 17-1. That led to a district championship match against Montverde Academy, which had defeated Lake Minneola 17-12 in the opposite semifinal.

In the district final April 6, Nick Witten and Mikey Berkman each had four goals and an assist for the Warriors in a 14-4 victory. Sam Malaussena had seven saves in goal.

The Warriors (17-2) will travel to take on Bishop Moore (16-2),

which handed West Orange one of its two defeats this season, at 7:30 p.m. on April 13 in the FHSAA First Round Play-In Game.

While the West Orange boys team was handling its business down the road in Lake County last week, the girls team was doing so on the home turf of Raymond Screws Stadium.

The Warriors (12-7) first defeated Apopka 21-1 April 4.

Two days later, in the District 9 championship, West Orange’s girls team secured a second consecutive playoff berth with a 16-5 win over East Ridge.

Like the boys team, the Warriors girls team will be on the road for their First Round Play-In Game April 13. West Orange will travel to Lake Highland Prep (13-7). That contest scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

10 at state but still can lay claim to a successful 400-pound bench press in DeLand.

“I’ve never had a kid in highschool bench over 400 pounds,” Head said. “It’s amazing and he’s a great kid — we love him to death.”

Pittman only has been on the team for his junior and senior seasons and said he has improved his bench press by about 50 pounds in one year’s time. He increased his cleanand-jerk by about 40 pounds.

Pittman has worked with Head and also coach Vernon Frett to achieve his improvements.

For perspective, had Pittman been able to match the 265 pounds he successfully cleaned-and-jerked at regionals, he would have had a meet total of 665 pounds — good for ninth place in the state.

case it happened,” said Bradley’s dad, Nick Royer.

Late Sunday afternoon, they got the call — Bradley had been chosen.

“When I heard about it, I was like, ‘Wow, they choose me?’” said Bradley, now 10.

The advertisement was for Under Armour Next, but that was all the Royer family was told.

They had no idea what they were walking into on Monday morning when they arrived in Tampa.

“I thought there were going to be all these kids there, but it was just (Bradley),” Nick said.

Bradley was immediately swept away to the dressing room.

“We came in, I got to put on all these clothes, which I really liked,” Bradley said. “Then I had to put on makeup so I would look better in pictures.”

The makeup part was a bit weird, Bradley said, but he took it in stride and got ready for the cameras.

“There were more cameras there than I’ve ever seen in one place,” he said.

Completely decked out in Under Armour gear, Bradley was asked to perform his golf swing over and over.

“They had to check each one to figure out which one was better,” Bradley said about the photos.

More than 400 pictures later, things were winding to a close, but they told Bradley to stick around just a little longer.

That’s when Jordan Spieth walked in — Bradley recognized him immediately.

“When he came in through the

back door I said, ‘Wow, I can’t believe my eyes; he’s my favorite golfer,’” Bradley said.

What impressed Bradley the most about Spieth was his height.

“He was much taller than I thought,” Bradley said.

Instead of rushing off the stage to Spieth’s side, Bradley invited Spieth onto the stage for a photo-op. The two took some photos together before Spieth hustled off to the dressing rooms to prepare for his own round of photos.

“He was very nice,” Bradley said.

But Bradley couldn’t brag to his friends about his meeting with Spieth. In fact, he couldn’t say anything about the photo shoot until the advertisement was published.

“You were almost on a gag

order,” Nick said. “You couldn’t say anything about anything.”

When Bradley’s teachers asked him why he had missed school on Monday, he told them he was under contract and couldn’t tell them.

Finally in July, the advertisement was published on the Under Armour Next website.

“We were visiting my grandparents, and we were all in the kitchen when my mom went on the site,” Bradley said. “Everybody wanted to see it.”

The advertisement features Bradley and Spieth side-by-side in a finishing swing.

Once the advertisement was published, Nick discovered why Bradley had been chosen for the ad — the agency wanted a kid who emulated Spieth’s golfing style.

“Their swings and finishes were identical,” Nick said.

And that resemblance is no mistake. Bradley has longadmired Spieth and has tried to imitate Spieth’s style.

“I try to copy him,” Bradley said. “My coach even told me to emulate Jordan with my stance.”

Bradley, who said he is taking the sport seriously, golfs several times a week, and a copy of that photo of him and Spieth hangs on the Royer’s kitchen wall.

“It’s not every day that you get to have a one-on-one with no other kids there,” Bradley said.

“It was pretty special.”
