hings are progressing on schedule at the new Windermere High School, and construction is only weeks away from completion.

The building is set to be completed in mid-May with the staff’s move-in date set for midJune, and it won’t be a moment too soon, said Principal Douglas Guthrie.

With dozens of positions still to fill and shipments of equipment scheduled for delivery in June, the to-do list to get Windermere High ready for the start of the 2017-18 school year is still exhaustive.

Another door opens The faith journey of Ralph Howe from professional golfer to becoming the new senior pastor at Lifebridge Church in Windermere is one adorned with doors opening at just the right time.

ood things were happening for Ralph Howe in the late 1980s.

In 1988, Howe — then 23 — won the U.S. Amateur Public Links Golf Championship, earning an invitation to the Masters Golf Tournament in 1989.

The Long Island native realized a lifelong dream of playing in the legendary tournament at August National in Georgia.

Later that year, he played alongside Phil Mickelson in the Walker Cup. After that, he turned professional, and a sponsor wrote him a check for $140,000. In short, Howe was in the midst of the best stretch of his golf career.

Everything seemed to be going according to plan, except for one detail — Howe, now the new senior pastor at Lifebridge Church in Windermere, wasn’t fulfilled.

“With all that happening, I really was not content,” said Howe, now 51. “That was what caused me to ask bigger questions.”

It was then, in 1989, that Howe returned to a faith journey he had wandered away from for nearly a decade — a faith journey that would become a recurring case of doors opening at just the right time.

LOVE IN THE CITY BEAUTIFUL

As he continued along in his professional golf career spanning nine years — spending three seasons on the Asian Tour and then transitioning to the web.com Tour (then the Nike Tour) — he began to lead Bible studies.

Howe, who played his college golf at Florida Southern and spent his winters in Orlando, eventually went looking for a church in the City Beautiful. It was when he decided to give Discovery Church on South Orange Avenue a try that he found his home church — and his future wife, Melinda.

“She was the second person I saw, and I decided that was the church I was going to,” Howe

recalls, laughing.

Howe continued along in his professional career, spending months on the road. He continued to either host Bible studies on his own, or else participate in those put on by the Fellowship of Christian Athlete’s Golf Ministry.

Howe said the studies — which he advertised simply by putting a bulletin up in the locker room — usually had about 20 to 30 golfers attending but would sometimes draw even larger crowds, especially if a meal was provided. The attendance underscored what Howe believes is an under-theradar desire for faith and fellowship by many professional golfers on the road.

“People would be surprised at how many golfers (place a priority on faith),” Howe said.

When Ralph and Melinda Howe were married in 1998, Howe recalls concluding during their honeymoon in Charleston, South Carolina, that it was time for him to move on from professional golf — jokingly saying it was time to find a “real job.” “(Playing professionally was a) great time, great experience — played some good golf occasionally,” Howe said. “Ultimately, as a career, I didn’t sustain and make enough money.”

As the newlyweds drove home to Orlando and were passing through the Greater Jacksonville area, Howe decided to make an impromptu stop at the FCA Golf Ministry’s headquarters in Ponte Vedra to introduce the friends he

to create a master schedule and order all the desks and equipment needed to fill each classroom.

“It’s making sure we have the right number of desks, the right number of computers in the media center, all the equipment for band, all the equipment for athletics,” Guthrie said. “Once we start receiving the furniture and equipment, we have to keep track of that and make sure it’s in the right room and in good condition.”

But right now, Guthrie’s biggest concern is filling all the vacant positions.

Currently about 48 positions have been filled, but another 83 remain empty. Earlier this year, the district put the school on a hiring freeze, preventing Guthrie from making more progress in filling his staff list. He won’t be able to resume making hires until early May. “We have to wait until May 8, then we can start interviewing again,” Guthrie said. “We have almost 400 résumés to choose from and interview, which is why I’m pretty sure we’ll have this process done by June. I think we’ve got some very, very good teachers so far, and I’m sure we will continue that.”

Although the staff list isn’t complete, a training session and luncheon for the teachers already has been scheduled for mid-July.

The goal is to help the teachers get to know each other, Guthrie said.

Although the logistics of filling the school with staff and equipment is a work in progress, the Windermere High ParentTeacher-Student Organization is already in full swing.

“The PTSO has been working very hard getting organized,” Guthrie said. “They’ve been out selling T-shirts, hats, stickers, magnets.”

“All students I’ve meet have been very excited, and they want to get over here and start being a Wolverine. When we get the student body in place, that’s when we can start setting traditions.”

On Thursday, April 27, the PTSO will host its first meeting at 6:15 p.m. in the West Orange High School cafeteria to hold elections for its executive board.

But the PTSO isn’t the only aspect of the school marking a miletone in the coming weeks.

On May 10, the school will have a groundbreaking ceremony for its football stadium.

“I want us to be the best high school in the state of Florida, if not in the nation, as far as performing arts, fine arts, athletics and academics,” Guthrie said.

But having been the principal of an empty school for several months, Guthrie said he is looking forward to finally having students bustling in the hallways.

Over the last several weeks, he’s visited several schools to meet and talk to incoming Windermere High students, and he said their reactions have mostly been positive.

“The incoming students we’ve talked to are wonderful,” Guthrie said. “I’m very impressed with questions they had, and their comments were that they are really looking forward to getting to be students on campus next year.”

Before the first day of school, Windermere High will have a community open house on Aug. 2 and an open house for students and parents on Aug. 10. And once the school year starts, Guthrie said it will be up to the students to start creating the school’s traditions.

“All students I’ve meet have been very excited, and they want to get over here and start being a Wolverine,” Guthrie said. “When we get the student body in place, that’s when we can start setting traditions.”

while traveling eastbound on Windermere Road. Windermere Police Department Sgt. Jayson Bonk and two other officers running radar noticed the traffic violation, and Bonk pulled out from his position to conduct a traffic stop.

Once Bonk activated his police lights, the juvenile sped up and began passing cars in the wrong lane of the roadway while heading toward Maguire Road. At that point, Bonk said, he realized the car was fleeing but did not pursue, following department policy.

“The vehicle continued at a really high rate of speed on Windermere Road toward the threeway stop on Maguire, and at that point, he was in the wrong lane of traffic trying to come up to the intersection,” Bonk said. “I think that’s when he realized the vehicles were traveling north and southbound. So he slammed on his brakes and the vehicle started skidding out of control, and it almost struck a couple of cars that were traveling through the intersection. Luckily, he was able to recklessly make a right turn onto Maguire Road, where he continued southbound toward downtown Windermere.”

The fleeing vehicle left a trail to its location with skid marks, Windermere Police Chief David Ogden said. Several minutes later, the car was located in a lot at 106 E. Sixth Avenue just off Main Street, behind the Windermere Police Department and Town Administration buildings.

The Dr. Phillips location is the first to introduce the newly designed Huey Magoo’s restaurant concept. It will have a sleek, industrial, clean-cut design.

The menu centers on chicken tenders, and guests have a wide variety of options when customizing their meal. Tenders come hand-breaded, grilled, plain with the restaurant’s special Magoo’s sauce or coated.

Then, depending on how hungry they are, guests will choose how many tenders they want — three, five or seven tenders in a single meal, with fries, Magoo’s sauce and Texas toast. A meal for two includes eight tenders, fries, two sides of Magoo’s sauce and two pieces of Texas toast, and family meals can include up to 30 tenders.

With two other locations aside from that in Dr. Phillips set to open soon, Howard is excited about the future and presence of his restaurant in the Central Florida area. He hopes customers who come in for the Magoo’s experience will love it as much as he did when he first found out about the chain.

“I’m a pretty good aficionado of chicken tenders, so when I say we have the world’s greatest chicken tenders, I believe it and stand by it,” he said. “It always starts with the product, and at Huey Magoo’s, it’s literally all about the tenders, and we’re pretty creative about it.”

One of the K-9 deputies then suggested the search team check the house again, and the juvenile was discovered hiding underneath a metal trailer in the overgrown backyard. The young man was arrested and charged with burglary of a dwelling, fleeing and attempting to elude and reckless driving.

“Hopefully, he learned from this,” Bonk said.

had made there from his Bible studies on the tour to his bride.

There, a door opened.

“The guy who runs the whole national ministry looks up, drops his pencil on his desk and says, ‘Rob, I can’t believe you just walked through that door,’” Howe said. “He said, ‘We’ve got a job opening up in our ministry and for the last two weeks we’ve been praying that you would be the one to come take the job.’”

That series of events entailed Howe’s transition from professional golf to ministry.

He spent six years working for the FCA, from 1998 to 2004, traveling to put on many of the same Bible studies in which he had participated. Although he was still away from home often, his trips usually only kept him on the road from Monday through Thursday.

In 2004, the Howes were a growing family. Their first daughter, Riley, was 2 and they were working through the mountain of paperwork to adopt the first of two daughters — Amanda and Abby — from China, with their son, Jonah, not far behind. Although she was just a toddler, Riley began to understand what her father’s packed bags would mean, and Howe decided it was time to find a career with less travel.

Then, another door opened.

The family had continued to worship at Discovery Church, and Ralph had become an elder.

meeting at Olympia High School, but now with its own location on Apopka-Vineland Road — Howe was tapped to both plant and subsequently lead that new location.

Howe remained in that role until 2010. Between 2007 and 2010, both he and his wife had had a recurring inkling that was rooted in their trips to China to adopt their daughters: that they should move to China.

That was confirmed when Howe received not one, but two, job offers in Beijing to teach golf.

After turning down the first offer, wary of the enormity of moving a young family overseas, Howe took the second offer, and the Howes were off to China in 2010 — without a set “exit-strategy” or a set time frame of how long they would live there.

“It was really an amazing life experience … I was so thrilled that my two girls who are Chinese got to live in China and they have memories,” Howe said. “It was incredible for every one of us in the family.”

The family planted roots in Beijing, and for more than three years, everything went well. In September 2013, though, the driving range and academy that Howe was teaching at was sold, and he was informed he would have until Nov. 30, 2013, to find a new job in China or else have to return to the United States.

Three weeks after Howe got that news, the new senior pastor at Discovery reached out to him: The church was in need of a pastor for its central campus — and another door opened.

HOME SWEET HOME

The Howes returned to Orlando in early 2014 and spent nearly three years back at the church where they had met. Things were going well, once again, when the leadership at Lifebridge Church reached out, interested to have a conversation about an opening.

Howe was happy with his situation, but he and Melinda decided to pray on it and reconvene in a few days. When they did, both felt as though they ought to at least have the conversation and see what the leadership at Lifebridge had to say.

“The whole time, it felt like this steady, gentled kind of ‘yes’ in my spirit,” Howe said.

Things continued to line up, and Howe is now settling in as the church’s new senior pastor.

He said the congregation has been enormously welcoming to him and his family and that he is particularly excited about the unique opportunities at Lifebridge — the latest door that has opened.

“The location is great — meaning this is a growing community,” Howe said. “There are so many people moving into town, and when people move into town, they are looking to get connected to their new community.

That makes local churches really important to them.

“For that, I love the location, because this is a vibrant, growing community,” he said. “I’m thrilled I can come to a church where there is just so much life.”

very day, Paige Pedersen reads Shakespeare.

It’s been years since she fell in love with the playwright’s works, and now she’s taking that love to The Big Apple.

After winning first place at the district level of the National Shakespeare Competition, Pedersen, a senior at Olympia High School, is one of 56 students from across the United States who will be competing in the national competition on May 2.

For the past two years, Pedersen has competed in the National Shakespeare Competition at Olympia and at the district level but had never advanced to the national level.

“I was so shocked,” Pedersen said about her win.

Pedersen’s love of Shakespeare has been years in the making. The first Shakespeare play she read was “Romeo and Juliet,” but she didn’t fall in love until she cracked open “Macbeth.”

“After I read ‘Macbeth’ was really when the light bulb went off,” she said. “It’s so amazing.”

And although most people find the Old English challenging to digest, Pedersen wanted to delve deeper into the unfamiliar language.

“It intrigued me,” she said. “I wanted to know exactly what they were saying.”

Now she has no problem picking up one of Shakespeare’s works and understanding the dialogue and storyline.

It’s a learned skill, she said.

To qualify for the National Shakespeare competition, Pedersen had to prepare 20 lines of a Shakespeare monologue. She choose one of Rosalind’s monologues from “As You Like it.” For the district competition, which included dozens of students from schools across Central Florida, she presented her monologue plus a sonnet.

For the national competition, she will recite both Shakespeare pieces but also will be asked to

perform a cold reading out of one of Shakespeare’s works. To prepare for the competition, Pedersen spends her days reading random Shakespeare passages.

“If I know the play and the context, it’s easier,” she said of cold readings. “If I have no idea where it’s from, that’s a lot harder.”

One of Shakespeare’s more challenging plays is “Julius Caesar,” Pedersen said.

“There is so much you have to study about the rules and the government,” she said.

But for all her love of Shakespeare, Pedersen has yet to perform in a Shakespeare play. She has been involved in the theater program at Olympia High School since she was a freshman, although her theater days began before high school.

“I started doing it at my church,” Pedersen said. “It was totally the Lord who brought me into that position, and it’s what He’s calling me to do.”

“It’s such a unique art form,” Pedersen said. “We get to reflect the world on stage. I love when the audience walks away thinking about something.”

If she could choose any one of Shakespeare’s characters to portray in a play, Pedersen’s first choice would be Rosalind from “As You Like it.”

“She is so strong,” Pedersen said. “And her way of encouraging people is so funny.”

But until she can be in a Shakespeare play, Pedersen will continue reading his works.

“It’s another side of theater that’s really, really unique,” she said.

It was April 25, 2014, and the Olympia girls water polo team was on the bus back to Southwest Orange from Miami.

The Titans had just made their first appearance as a program at state, but had been defeated 5-1

by Lake Nona in the quarterfinals.

Although there was some disappointment, for the six freshmen on the team, there was also a sense of excitement — after all, for four of the six, this was their SEE SENIORS PAGE 12

B

efore the Olympia Titans girls water polo team began the FHSAA 2017 State Championship Match, its members issued a challenge to one another.

A few feet away from the pool at Ransom Everglades High, where the state tournament was held, was a table with the two trophies and the respective medals for the state champion and the state runner-up that would be crowned that afternoon.

And so, after reaching the same point a season earlier and coming back to Southwest Orange County with the runners-up trophy and silver medals, the challenge was clear: “Look at that table and decide which trophy and which medal you want to bring home with you.”

When the dust had settled, the Titans had upgraded from silver to gold, defeating Gulliver Prep 7-4

in the FHSAA State Championship Game April 8.

The win completed not only a championship campaign — the program’s first — but also an undefeated one. Olympia finished the season with a 31-0 record.

“It’s totally cool — teams don’t do that,” head coach Stephanie Johnson Possell said of the team’s remarkable feat. “Going undefeated is amazing.”

Tied at 3-3 at halftime against Gulliver Prep, the Titans steadily pulled away in the second half.

With about a minute to play, a timeout was called with Olympia leading 6-4.

Faced with the opportunity to seize something they had all worked so hard for, the Titans were ready to execute.

“We had specifically worked in practice (on late-game situations),” senior Leila Sorrells said.

how we got the last goal.”

That last goal was scored by Jillian Delisle, who finished with three goals in the match, and it effectively sealed the deal by giving Olympia a 7-4 advantage.

“We scored one final goal, and that’s when it really sank in,” Delisle said.

The crowd counted down the game’s final seconds, and it was an emotional moment for all, including Johnson Possell. The veteran coach has been coaching water polo for more than two decades in Florida and Pennsylvania, where she won a state title in 1997.

“Before this game started, I couldn’t talk,” Johnson Possell said. “It was all right there — the

emotions were all right there, and I couldn’t talk. And (senior) Grace Whidden turns around and says, ‘Don’t worry coach, we got this.’ … That was a pretty neat thing.”

The championship is the first girls team sport state championship for Olympia High and the school’s third team championship, overall.

For Johnson Possell, it is a significant step in the tradition and the culture she is trying to build for a program at a public school without a pool of its own.

“Without having a pool a campus … we never really have a home — so our home is who we are,” Johnson Possell said.

One way she tried to bolster that sense of tradition was by reaching out to some of the program’s

alumni during the season. Sensing this year’s team might be the one to get over the hump, she asked that they send some words of encouragement — and 22 alumni responded by doing just that. Each day between the district tournament and Saturday’s state championship, the coach read a letter or two to her team to remind them of that support and tradition.

For the girls, finishing the undefeated campaign was the realization of hours upon hours of hard work.

“We definitely gave 110% of our time,” Delisle said. “The whole motivation for us was that moment of winning the state championship.”

As luck would have it, the girls — who have been to state in each of the past three years, also — won the title the first time that they made the trip to Miami along with the boys team. Although previous

trips to state in 2014, 2015, and 2016 included smaller crowds for Olympia, given the drive from Orange County to Miami, having the boys team there created a built-in cheering section.

Although the boys lost in their own state quarterfinal game to St. Thomas Aquinas April 7, they still got to play a role in helping cheer their peers to victory.

“One thing that made it extra special this year was having both teams at State,” Johnson Possell said. “If there was a competition of spectators, we won that. Our boys did fantastic (supporting the girls). … It was great hearing them.”

Since winning the championship, the girls have enjoyed congratulations from family, friends, classmates and more.

“The coolest part has been how the sense of community has shown through,” Delisle said.

first season of organized water polo.

Leila Sorrells recalled a sense for that year’s freshmen — now seniors — that the loss was not an end, but rather a beginning.

“The ride home from state freshman year, I was sitting there with Marcela (Herrera), and she looked at me and said, ‘I think our senior year we’re going to do it,’” Sorrells said. “We were like, ‘We have so many freshman girls this year (in 2014), our senior year we’re going to do it — we’re going to go all the way.’”

That statement made on a bus ride along Florida’s Turnpike turned out to be prophetic — on April 8, Olympia defeated Gulliver Prep 7-4 in the FHSAA State Championship Game.

It is the first team championship in a girls sports for Olympia High and the school’s third team championship, overall.

It was the ultimate sendoff for the seniors, including Sorrells,

Jillian De Lisle, Herrera, Grace Whidden, Claire Ewoldt and Kaley Hopegill.

“This group of seniors — it’s like a storybook start and a storybook finish,” said coach Stephanie Johnson Possell.

If it was a storybook finish, it was also an oddly methodical storybook. The girls water polo team’s path from a loss in the state quarterfinals in 2014 to a state championship in 2017 was rather linear. In 2015, the Titans lost in the state semifinals — again to Lake Nona. In 2016, they made it to the state championship match but lost to Ransom Everglades.

With nothing left to achieve but a ring, they did just that.

“We’ve progressively gotten better,” Hopegill said. “It’s been really cool to see the evolution of our team. My freshman year, it was a huge deal just to make it to state. Now, we’re state champions.”

The step-by-step nature was something the team had not set out to do, but looking back, Sor-

rells said it was rewarding.

“Every year was like a new prize and new school history being made every year,” Sorrells said.

The senior class, which spent the better parts of four years together playing together either on their varsity or club teams, will be missed by many — but most especially by their coach.

“There is always one of them who has the right thing to say, or has the right attitude or has the right shot,” Johnson Possell said.

“One of the six always stepped up whenever the team needed it.”

Of course, it’s not a one-way street, either. All six seniors expressed profound appreciation for the time their coach had invested in them.

“That’s one of the best parts of it,” Sorrells said. “The amount of time that she has put in, I’m so glad that we got to do this for her.”

If the Olympia girls water polo team’s season was a bit of destiny, the boys team’s season — which concluded with a 12-8 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas in the FHSAA State Quarterfinals — was a pleasant surprise.

“They did great,” coach Stephanie Johnson Possell said. “They had a fantastic season, and they overachieved on so many levels.”

After graduating seven seniors, it was unclear whether this year’s boys team could contend at the highest level. After suffering some setbacks early in the season, Olympia improved and scored its signature victory with an upset in overtime against Dr. Phillips in the District 3 Championship.

“We had to figure out who we were,” Johnson Possell explained. “They stepped up at the right time.”

The Titans also scored a thrilling 9-8 victory over Lake Nona April 1 to make it to state for the first time since 2013.

In the state quarterfinals, Olympia nearly scored another upset against St. Thomas Aquinas, leading at halftime before eventually being defeated.

“Our inexperience kind of hit us a little bit,” Johnson Possell said. “Our boys deserve a whole lot of credit this year.”

The Titans finished with a record of 21-8.

Why do you love softball?

It’s really fun, and you get to cheer when you’re with your friends.

Why did you decided to try playing softball two years ago?

I did soccer before and didn’t like it very much. My cousin is a professional softball player, so I thought I would try it.

How did you become such a good pitcher?

I take pitching lessons. I started out not doing so good, but then I got better and learned a change-up and other pitches. I did pitching last year, too, but this year is the first year that I’m really into it.
