W

ith more than 1,000 attendees and dozens of vendors serving up their fares each year, the West Orange Chamber of Commerce’s Best Fest is one of the area’s largest foodtasting expos.

And this year, the annual event is celebrating a milestone of 15 years showcasing the food, beverages, businesses and more that are ingrained in the West Orange community.

Also known as The Taste of West Orange, Best Fest is again being held at Starke Lake in Ocoee. Be sure to come hungry — more than 60 vendors will bring their favorite dishes and drinks to sample and share with guests.

This is the only one of its kind locally we can find that you pay one admission price at the door and that’s it.”

The ticket price of $40 in advance or $50 at the door allows guests unlimited access to all vendors in attendance, and there are no extra costs for samplings once admitted.

Another pinnacle of the event is the awards that guests get to decide on themselves. All attendees get to vote on their favorite vendors in five categories: best food, best beverage, best booth, best dessert and best healthy food, the last of which is a new category this year to tie in with the Healthy West Orange initiative.

“We’re excited to see the different vendors come and exhibit there. It’s great to be back over in Ocoee and it’s always exciting to see what the vendors are bringing and serving,” Wilson said. “It’s pretty much a surprise when we walk in. We’re looking forward to what they’re bringing and showing the community and chamber members what they’re doing.”

lmer J. Rivera is anticipating the day he can move into his new home in Oakland, which is being built specifically for him and his medical needs.

The retired U.S. Army captain and his family will reside in the eighth mortgage-free home provided by the nonprofit Home At Last program.

“Capt. Rivera is a very deserving individual,” Gary Atwill, HAL chairman, said. “He had multiple deployments to various locations during his service in the U.S. Army. Capt. Rivera was severely wounded as a result of a mortar attack in Iraq. He was highly decorated as a result of his service to our country.”

Rivera and his wife, Leyda; their three children, 13-year-old Paola and 15-year-olds Elmer Gabrielle and Elmer Jose; plus a service dog named Freedom and Kiko the family dog, are living in Elmer Rivera’s native Puerto Rico, until their home on Briley Avenue is completed in June.

Their neighbors will be Brandon and Kassandra Wittwer and their three children, also recipients of a Home At Last house.

LIVING A DREAM

All homes built by the organization are between 2,500 and 3,000 square feet in size. The interior is designed to meet the individual and specific needs of each veteran, Atwill said, and all are ADA compliant.

Although Rivera gets around without a wheelchair, the house is designed to accommodate one in case he requires one in the future.

The layout of their home was designed to simplify his mobility.

The retired Army captain said he heard about the Home At Last program a few years ago from his Army Wounded Warrior case manager, and he decided to apply.

In October 2015, Rivera learned his family was chosen when he received a call from Atwill.

“We could not believe what was happening,” Rivera said. “It was like living a dream. Too many emotions are going through our minds.”

He said he waited a few weeks, until Thanksgiving Day, to tell his children and other family members the exciting news.

“It was a real blessing and a huge reason to say thanks,” he said.

His children were eager to find out as much as possible about their new community, researching the local schools, sports activities and teams and the theme parks.

Rivera and his wife are ready for a fresh start in Oakland.

“My family has been my backbone, my everything,” he said.

“They have been there from me from Day 1. Without family support, you cannot make it through in the military. They have been instrumental in my recovery.”

When the Riveras move to Florida, they will be close to a brother in Kissimmee and other family members living in Tampa, so familial support will be nearby.

With seven other retired wounded warriors living in Oakland, an automatic support system has already been established.

“I think this will be great since we can support each other as we can relate in the different situations we encounter individually and as families,” Rivera said.

“Hopefully, I can be a mentor and help in any way I can.”

HOME OF HEROES

Oakland was referred to as the “Home of Heroes” during the groundbreaking ceremony March 18 to signify the start of construction on the Riveras’ home.

And the person who spoke those words certainly knows a thing or two about heroes.

Jay Garner, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general, lives in Windermere and was asked to speak at the ceremony.

“It is a fitting designation since all eight of the Home At Last veteran homes are located in Oakland,” Atwill said. “The town of Oakland is a warm and welcoming environment for our veterans and their families. The recipients of the homes are all combatwounded veterans who served our country well.”

Oakland Mayor Kathy Stark said she is proud to have so many veterans living in the town.

SERVICE TO COUNTRY

Elmer J. Rivera was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition to graduating from many military courses, Rivera holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from Norwich University and a master’s degree in business from University of Phoenix.

Upon graduation from Norwich in 1995, he was commissioned a Military Police second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Rivera served in a variety of units throughout his 13-year military career. His assignments included duty with the 301st Military Police Company, 338th Finance Battalion, U.S. Army Garrison Command — Military Police Detachment, U.S. Army Southern Command, 65th Regional Support Command and the 16th Military Police Brigade (ABN).

He served in numerous positions as a commissioned officer, including platoon leader, company commander, executive officer and anti-terrorism officer.

His deployments include Task Force Aurora, in Guatemala (2000); Operation Noble Eagle, at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico

HOME AT LAST This special program builds homes for combat-wounded permanently disabled veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan war. The chairman is Gary Atwill, a Vietnam War veteran of the U.S. Navy and past president of the Windermere Rotary Club.

Community support is essential. Individuals, clubs, corporations, churches, architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors and material suppliers all have combined to make these homes a reality.

Modeled after Winter Garden’s panhandling ordinance, Ocoee’s ordinance requires panhandlers to register with the city to obtain a permit. It also makes it illegal for vehicle occupants located in traffic on a city right-of-way to “offer money or other articles of value” to a panhandler.

“I believe it’s something that we’ve seen growing throughout the years and there are probably a lot of different reasons for it,” Ocoee Police Deputy Chief Steve McCosker. “We’re in West Orange — a county where we still have, even though there’s a lot of them being cleared, we still have a lot of wooded areas, so homeless people go there. We still have multiple bus stops people use for transit to different locations, and while they’re waiting for the bus, they go ahead and conduct panhandling. So it’s definitely some-

thing that’s growing.”

The law prohibits panhandling anywhere within 100 feet of any bus stop, train stop, school or liquor store. It also forbids panhandling in public transportation vehicles and facilities, in city rights-of-way, public parks, fairgrounds, sporting facilities, ATMs, city-owned parking garages and lots, and on private property or commercial retail establishments unless given written permission.

“Right now, you have people panhandling on businesses, and the businesses generally don’t realize until later, and they don’t appreciate it,” McCosker said.

“And then you have other situations where you have panhandlers who are either panhandling on the streets or on the sidewalks and causing issues with traffic.”

The ordinance also sets guidelines for how panhandlers may interact with individuals they solicit. Panhandlers are forbidden

from coming within three feet of the person being solicited unless that person has indicated they wish to make the donation; using profane or abusive language; following a person who walks away or otherwise indicates they are not interested in making a donation; blocking the path of the person being solicited; or using any statements or gestures that could be interpreted as threatening.

In addition, it includes provisions to discourage panhandlers from using deceit, such as pretending they are homeless, using makeup to simulate a deformity or injury, pretending to be a military veteran, pretending to be stranded or out of town, and pretending to be mentally or physical disabled.

“We’ve had the whole gamut of experiences,” McCosker said.

“We’ve had people who truly needed help, and whenever we encounter them, we go ahead and find out what type of help we can

He was deployed to Iraq as the commander of the 301st Military Police Company to perform detainee and military police combat operations in the notorious Abu Ghraib Prison. After the prison abuse scandal, Rivera said, the 301st MP took charge of the Tier 1A of the prison, which housed the high-value detainees and other important Intel assets.

He was tasked with setting up a visitation and reception area for the detainees to visit with family.

The prison was the target of a massive mortar attack in October 2004, and Rivera was severely injured with mortar shrapnel to his abdominal area. He required more than 18 surgeries, including a colostomy, gastrectomy and splenectomy and the placement of a permanent abdominal mesh.

He was also diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

But the stricter law, McCosker emphasized, is chiefly targeted to individuals, church groups and sports teams who endanger themselves or others when panhandling in city right-of-ways, vehicular traffic and private property.

“A church group will come in and bring about five or six people, and then they’ll go to an intersection like Clarke and Silver Star that’s very busy,” he said. “They’ll be in the medians with buckets and other things trying to solicit donations. And our fear is that it’s just not safe.”

At about 3:30 a.m., officers responded to a call in reference to a 35-year-old with a possible overdose. As officers and paramedics rushed inside the home, one officer noticed a man lying underneath a vehicle in the driveway casually ignoring the situation and holding a tire wrench. The officer found the situation odd and spoke with the man. The man stated he was changing his tires and had known the female inside the house for several months but knew nothing of the overdose.

He then stressed he needed to get back to changing the tires.

The officer had dispatch check the man’s records. It was discovered the man had an active warrant involving a homicide charge. Two present officers then proceeded in an attempt to handcuff the man. The man wrestled out of their grip and fled. The officer chased him and tasered him.

At about 4:20 a.m., officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle parked in front of a 7-Eleven and discovered a pickup with a man sleeping in the driver seat. Responding officers noticed the smell of alcoholic impurities emanating from the open driver’s side window and woke him. The officers had trouble understanding him because his speech was slurred. The man said he was coming from Tildenville and claimed he fell asleep because he was diabetic. When asked

repeatedly if he would be willing to perform field sobriety exercises, he aggressively insisted he would not and that he was fine.

He was then placed in handcuffs and asked to sit on a curb. While sitting on the curb, the man continually tried to spit on the police officer.

10500 block of West Colonial Drive. At about 11:30 a.m., an officer was called to Walmart in reference to retail theft. The officer learned from an employee that a man and woman were observed selecting merchandise from the shelves and replacing the price tags with tags from lower priced items. The individuals then went to the selfcheckout, paid for the items and attempted to leave the store but were detained. The man and woman had only paid $74.96, even though the item were valued at $167. Both individuals were handcuffed and transported to the Orange County Jail.

However, once they arrived, the officer noticed the man moving around “in a very erratic manner.” The officer went to investigate and noticed an off-white substance on the floorboard, as well as a small plastic bag containing more of the substance.

The woman started crying and told the officer, “That’s not mine.” But the man then said, “That belongs to her, sir.” The officer then asked the man, “If it’s hers, why are you covered in it?” The man explained the woman had thrown the bag at him. The plastic bag, which will be checked for prints, contained 26.3 grams of meth.

Winter Garden OKs MRI imaging at new office park The commission approved an amendment to the zoning of Daniels Professional Park to include an MRI imaging center.

Daniels Professional Park will be a medical and professional office complex with medical offices and facilities located on the northeast corner of Daniels and Roper roads.

According to the site plan, the planned commercial development will take up a currently vacant 1.93-acre lot and have five buildings totaling 17,750 square feet.

During the March 23 Winter Garden commission meeting, the zoning was amended to allow for MRI and imaging centers, which had been prohibited in accordance with a city ordinance passed in May 2015.

“Sometimes, when you’re going through zoning things come up, and I think at the time, we didn’t think it was that big of a deal but now there’s been interest for imaging,” said Ryan Kingry, a realestate broker with Millennia Partners. “So we just wanted to clean up the zoning to essentially allow for all medical uses.”

Kingry and his team at Millenia Partners are looking for multiple medical users, including family practices, dentists, orthodontists and specialty doctors, in addition to professional users, such as engineering firms and attorney

offices. But the majority of interest has come from potential medical users, which Kingry suspects might be due to the site’s proximity to Florida Hospital.

“With its proximity to Winter Garden Village, the new hospital and new things going on up there, it’s a great place for not only medical but also professional office use,” Kingry said. “Daniels Road is certainly a main corridor there that sort of connects Windermere via Dillard Street up to Winter Garden.”

The office park, on which construction will begin near the end of June, is expected to be open by late 2017 or early 2018.

Every night before bed, Winter Garden resident Charlie Campbell used to have his mom spin the globe in his room and randomly point at a place. Then, he would proceed to tell her all about it, even the most obscure of places.

Now an eighth-grader at Holy Family Catholic School, Charlie is putting his fascination with geography to good use: He will be one of only 100 fourth- through eighth-grade students in the state to compete in the Florida National Geographic State Bee. Charlie qualified by winning the bee at his school and taking an online test. He and his parents will travel Friday, March 31, to Jacksonville University so he can compete.

His intent interest in geography began when his grandfather gave him a world map in second grade.

“I was really interested in Egypt at the time and astonished … I didn’t know the world was that big,” he said.

His mom, Cyndi, said he studied that map so much it began

For weeks following his audition, Josiah Hall anxiously waited to hear back from the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet at Dr. Phillips High School.

Hall has his sights set on a career in music, and for him, admission into the prestigious program was the next step toward that dream.

Finally, two weeks ago, his wait ended. Hall was accepted into the VPA Magnet at Dr. Phillips.

Hall, an eighth-grader at Lockhart Middle School, was just one of nearly 4,000 students throughout the Orange County Public School district who applied to join a magnet program for the 2017-18 school year.

The application process began in November with a deadline set for Feb. 15. But with so many applicants — 3,906 to be exact — not all students would be placed in a magnet program.

These programs, which range in subjects, provide students with an opportunity to focus on a specific field of study.

The district currently has programs at six elementary schools, 10 middle schools and 22 high schools.

But the high-school p ro g ra m s are by far the most popular. This year, 2,100 of the applications were for highschool programs, while 1,224 were for middle-school programs.

For those who do not get selected in the lottery, they will be placed on a waiting list. But the chances of getting chosen off the waiting list before the school year begins are slim. And once the school year begins, the waiting list is erased.

In the case of the VPA Magnet at Dr. Phillips High, students also are required to audition.

Last year, Amaya Zhané auditioned to join the VPA Magnet at Dr. Phillips. After weeks of agonizing waiting, she got the news.

She had been accepted into the program.

“I was extremely happy to continue my training as an actress and really dive deep into my work,” said Zhané, now a junior. “It’s helped me with my core classes because I’m able to have a creative outlet and a healthy balance. It’s also helped me with connections in the community theater world and helped me learn so much more about the technical theater side of the magnet.”

Hall refused to think of the prospect of not getting accepted into the Dr. Phillips VPA Magnet, and now that he has received his official acceptance notice, he can’t wait to get started.

“They’re the only magnet program that’s in performing arts,” he said of the program. “I know that I can get a good experience from there.”

receive far more applications than others, including the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet and the Center for International Studies Magnet at Dr. Phillips.

The quality of Dr. Phillips’ magnet programs is so high that they were both recently recognized by the Magnet Schools of America.

The VPA Magnet was named a Merit School of Distinction while the CIS Magnet was named a National Magnet School of Excellence.

“The VPA Magnet Program offers students with an interest in the performing arts a place where they can excel in their chosen field of expertise,” said Keith Galasso, director of the VPA Magnet at Dr. Phillips. “Students become an integral part of a highly motivated and successful program which helps build self-esteem and confidence.”

For students such as Hall, getting into a magnet program could be life-changing. He’s been playing the bass clarinet since sixth grade, thanks to his mom.

“My mom played bass clarinet in high school, and she said it was a fun instrument,” Hall said.

Hall has big dreams of attending the Eastman School of Music for college and one day becoming either a music educator or professional bass clarinet player. But the first step of that dream is to gain more musical knowledge.

“It’ll give me musical background that I might need for college, like learning musical theory, how to play the piano, how to read music in a new clef,” Hall said about the VPA Magnet at Dr. Phillips.

Students are chosen for programs based on a lottery system. An initial lottery was held on Feb. 24 with a second lottery scheduled for later in April.

T

hings are taking a quirky turn at Olympia High School as the theater department stages “The Addams Family” at 7 p.m.

March 30 through April 1, and at 1 p.m. April 1, at the school, 4301 S. Apopka-Vineland Road.

What makes this show unique is the partnership between the school’s theater director, Ed Budd, and the school’s Latin teacher Alan Pagan-Pearl.

Although Pagan-Pearl has spent many years lending a helping hand for Budd’s productions, this is the first show he has directed for the school.

“I’ve always been an actor and have never thought of directing, but I’ve really enjoyed this process,” Pagan-Pearl said.

“It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for me. Theater has made me everything I am, so it’s very powerful for me to get this opportunity.

Of course, under any director is a cast of actors. And in the case of “The Addams Family,” these actors will be re-creating characters from a show that pre-dates them by 50 years.

Driving cancer away Attendees will dust off their boots for an evening in the ‘Wild West’ to support the American Cancer Society.

Since the 1970s, American Cancer Society supporters nationwide have been putting a twist on the charitable gala: They’re breaking out the boots, cowboy hats and flannel shirts.

At the annual Cattle Barons’ Ball, many guests eschew gowns and tuxedos for traditional Western wear. A charitable gala nonetheless, the ball was first launched in Texas in the 1970s to bring together donors for a fun, relaxing evening of raising funds to fight cancer.

While the ball will be ongoing in various places around the country, hundreds of Central Florida attendees will kick the dust up Saturday, April 1, at Rosen Shingle Creek.

“It’s a different kind of gala, because people can come in blue jeans and boots if they want, or a fancy party dress,” said Therese Yanochik, the Central Florida Cattle Barons’ Ball event organizer. “It’s a very high-end event, and what’s unique about Orlando’s is that it’s a dine around. We have more than 30 restaurants in the area that come in and prepare the food. It’s neat that people can experience all these different restaurants in one place.”

Whether attendees dress in blue jeans and boots or party dresses with a little bling, the focus of the night is on raising money for the American Cancer Society. They’ll get to try their luck at multiple chance drawings, such as the Wine

Guests also will have the opportunity to pan for real gems, win a $5,000 pair of diamond earrings, play carnival games, listen to highenergy band Blue Stone Circle perform, take line-dancing lessons on the dance floor and socialize while enjoying local delicacies.

He’s crazy silly. And I’m able to channel my inner creep-job.

I love her songs. They show her range and personality, and the tone of the songs shows how she is torn between the two sides (of her family and her boyfriend).

He’s a normal person going in, but was brought into their quirkiness and weirdness. It’s a transition for him throughout the musical.

It was such a different show, such a funny show.

Everything “Addams Family” has been super good.

What is the craziest thing your character does in the show?

He risks his life to prove his love to Wednesday, like when she shoots the apple off his head.

For which role did you audition?

I said anyone. I was surprised but very happy to be in a musical because I haven’t been in one before.

What do you like about Pugsley’s character?

I like playing up the troublesome brother, poking fun and annoying Wednesday.

I watched the cartoon over spring break. It was hilarious, and it brought out a lot of interesting characters who aren’t in the musical.

I get pulled out on this torture device and say, “Wednesday and Lucas sitting in a tree. K-I-L-LI-N-G. First comes loves then comes …” then I scream because Wednesday turns the device on.

Guests brought their lawn chairs, snacks and blankets and watched the sun set over Lake Apopka and listened to sweet sounds from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

This year’s theme was “The Race for Space” and the orchestra performed fan favorites from “Star Wars” and “E.T.,” among others.

A beautiful gracious woman died this week. Gloria Ann (Johnson) Harris passed peacefully without pain on Saturday, March 25, 2017, knowing abundant love from family, friends and her Heavenly Father.

Ann was born in Atlanta, daughter of many generations of Southern ladies and Steel Magnolias. She moved to Orlando in her teens, attended OHS with her older sister, Jane Johnson (Steele), and was tickled to say they were both “Dixie Debs.”

After high school, she briefly attended modeling school in New York until it became apparent she was too short to walk the runway. She returned to Florida, worked at LaPierre Pontiac and met the man of her dreams, Phil Harris, at a USO dance.

Phil’s military career swept them across the country to a succession of Air Force bases, where Ann set up new homes for her growing family of three daughters. She lived in many places, but

An opportunity to hit the ground running For one recent arrival to West Orange County, joining the Winter Garden Runners provided a path to stay in shape and get social in a new community.

hen Rebecca Young and her husband, Geoff, were scouting areas to live in Florida, West Orange was an easy sell.

When the couple from Baltimore came down to visit downtown Winter Garden on a Saturday, the community — boasting fresh produce in January at the farmers market and dozens of people jogging and cycling up and down the West Orange Trail — sold itself.

The Youngs followed through and moved to Summerport Vil-

lage in August 2016. Then, the challenge morphed from the logistics of moving from a different state to beginning to integrate themselves into new community.

Fortunately, it didn’t take Rebecca long to find the Winter Garden Runners.

Rebecca had been more of a gym rat when living up north — partly because of the weather in the winter — but she also had some experience with running groups. So, when she came across the Facebook page for the Winter Garden Runners, she sent the

group a message asking about coming out and what kind of pace they tend to keep. The response was warm and welcoming: Come on out — we have people at all difference paces.

After that first run on a Saturday morning last fall, Rebecca had planned to simply return home.

“We finished and they said, ‘Aren’t you coming to coffee?’”

Young recalled. “And I said, ‘Oh, I guess I am.’”

‘Pilates on steroids’ eople like to call it “Pilates on steroids.”

It’s the Lagree Fitness Training Method, pioneered

by Sebastien Lagree, and it has arrived in West Orange County.

A fitness system that has been embraced by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara and Ivanka Trump, Lagree Fit OC has come to the area with a location in Winter Garden in a shared space with Garage Mama Fitness and Trinity Sports Performance.

In September, a location in Windermere will open in the Westside Shoppes development currently under construction along Country Road 535 near Lakeside Village.

Windermere resident Angela Lopez has been a certified Lagree trainer for several years in locations ranging from West Hollywood to Miami. Don Suarez Don Suarez, co-owner of the HitFit Gym in Winter Garden, has been involved in the fitness industry for more than a decade. After starting the HitFit Gym in Winter Garden, Suarez has seen his business expand into nearby Clermont.

How did you get into fitness?

I was the typical overweight kid. I started getting involved in football in high school and started working out. I picked up body-building magazines and wanted to make my arms look like theirs. I liked the way my body changed.

How did you become a trainer?

After I graduated high school, I had no clue what I wanted to do, so I started taking general courses in college. I thought becoming an athletic trainer would be cool. But after looking into it, it didn’t seem all that cool, so I got my degree in exercise science. I knew I wanted to do something in the fitness industry. I worked at the FSU’s rec center, and I enjoyed it. So I started looking into personal training.

What do you enjoy about being a trainer?

No one program is going to work for everybody. You have to determine what your weak points are and what your body needs and then create a workout program around that.

What advice do you give to people starting a workout program?

Don’t focus on the end result. Focus on the steps necessary to get to that end result. This prevents you from quitting.

What do you do in your free time?

I spend time with my family.

I have two boys. Weston is 4, and Zane is 6. They’re both soccer players, so I coach my older son’s soccer team. As a coach, my goal is to make sure the kids get something out of it.

Warriors top Panthers in Spring Break Slam semis

he West Orange Warriors got their bats going early and often March 22 in the semifinals of the Central Florida Spring Break Slam.

West Orange (11-3) scored eight runs in the first two innings and ultimately defeated the Dr. Phillips Panthers 13-6.

With the victory, the Warriors advanced to the tournament’s championship game March 23 against Colonial. West Orange topped the Grenadiers, 11-1, to win the Spring Break Slam for the first time since the event began in 2012.

West Orange’s DeAndre Shelton was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Shelton went 9-for-15 at the plate, with five RBIs, three doubles and a home run.

What are your favorite TV shows?

Definitely “The Walking Dead,” “Impractical Jokers” and “The Detour.”

And, it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure, but also “Grey’s Anatomy.” My wife got me onto the show, and I dig it.

On a large scale, Sebastien Lagree’s program has become an exercise empire of sorts, with locations springing up across the country. The program utilizes the Megaformer, which Lagree invented, to give a more intense and challenging workout than regularly associated with Pilates.

On the official Lagree Fitness website, the ideology is explained: “Put simply, Lagree Fitness is the only workout that effectively combines strength, endurance, cardio, balance, core and flexibility training not only in one session but in each and every move.”

In short, it’s an exercise in efficiency, something Lopez recalls

from the first time she took a class at Lagree’s original gym in Los Angeles nearly a decade ago.

“I liked that it targeted specific muscle groups and the toning,” Lopez said. “To me, it targeted (the muscle groups) so directly, and it felt like something achievable, even though it’s a challenging class.”

Lopez said the affinity celebrities have for the program is telling of its efficiency. For anyone who might have a busy schedule, Lopez said they can come and get in a serious workout in 30 minutes.

For the clients who have given it a shot so far, the results have come quickly. Michelle Damon, wife of former baseball star Johnny Damon, said she had tried Pilates before but didn’t like it. She found

her first experience doing a Lagree Fit class with Lopez, though, to be quite different.

“I like that, the very first time I did it, I was sore the next day,” Damon said. “I knew it definitely worked.”

In addition to the results she says she has seen within the first month of taking the classes with Lopez, Damon also enjoys Lopez’s teaching style in the group setting.

“I like that she’s really positive,” Damon said. “There’s a lot of positive, motivational energy.”

Because of the design of the Megaformer, Lopez likes to say, “You can’t escape the machine.”

In addition to some celebrities in Los Angeles and Miami, she has trained six professional athletes, including her husband.

“They can’t believe how hard it is,” Lopez said of the pro athletes.

“They think it’s going to be easy, and then they’re sweating and screaming.”

Felipe Lopez, who has also launched his own business in West Orange named Felipe Lopez Baseball, said the incorporation of the Lagree Fitness method into his overall training method was greatly beneficial to his baseball career.

“This system is highly recommended for the longevity of your career,” Felipe Lopez said. “I’m trying to bring it into that baseball world, because it’s so beneficial for athletes.”

So far, Lagree Fit OC has grown quickly and mostly by word of mouth and client referrals. Lopez is optimistic to grow the brand in an area such as West Orange and Windermere, where so many people put an emphasis on taking care of themselves.

“I want people to walk in here every day and feel like this is the place they can rest, this is the place they heal, and this is the place where they strengthen themselves,” Lopez said. “When they leave, I want them to walk out feeling fresh and new and better than when they walked in.”

The Youngs have attended a “Friendsgiving” celebration with friends from the Runners, as well as a Christmas party. After some runs, members converge on Axum Coffee — after others, it’s the Crooked Can Brewery at Plant Street Market.

In addition to a network of friends, Young — who is a teacher for Orange County Public Schools — said the group dynamic has made her a better runner. Runners often chat while on their

runs, and Young’s desire to remain a part of the conversation forces her to keep a faster pace.

“You get in conversation and you don’t want the conversation to die,” Young said. “I always say I have a little-sister mentality. I’m tagging along and don’t want to get left behind because we’re joking and laughing. So my pace has improved here.”

Not only has her pace improved, but also Young said the frequency with which she formally competes has, as well.

The Runners often negotiate discounts for their members for 5Ks, half-marathons and marathons, and members are always

encouraging others to come race with them.

“I’ve done way more races than I ever used to do,” Young said.

“I’ve done five half-marathons since moving here, and I’d only done four in my life prior to that.”

It all has combined to fulfill the hopes Young said she felt when she first visited the area while still living in Baltimore.

“We went over to brunch somewhere, and everyone is jogging and biking and families are out — I said, ‘This is where I want to live,’” Young said. “I was sold.”
