Construction firm to bring headquarters to Winter Garden Winter Garden commissioners approved the first reading of a rezone request for a proposed office development. GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR
VMG Construction aims to build its headquarters in Winter Garden. The company, a commercialconstruction subcontractor, submitted a rezoning request to the city of Winter Garden, which approved the proposed rezone’s first reading during the March 14 commission meeting. VMG has requested city leaders to approve the rezoning of a 0.54-acre property located at 43 First St. from C-2 (Arterial Commercial District) to PCD (Planned Commercial Development. VMG plans to build a one-story, 3,200-square-foot office building on the south side of the property, according to city documents. Plans also include a new parking area, sidewalks, drive aisles and landscaping. Currently, the property houses a 1,800-square-foot masonry commercial-office building constructed in 1920 and a 1,500-square-foot warehouse building constructed in 2016. The south side of the property has an asphalt-paved parking area. The ordinance’s second reading is scheduled for the March 28 Winter Garden City Commission meeting. MetroPlan Orlando, Ocoee working on Silver Star Road project The city of Ocoee and MetroPlan want to provide a lower-cost alternative to improve Silver Star Road.

Ocoee and MetroPlan Orlando are collaborating on a project to improve a 1.2-mile stretch of roadway that includes Franklin Street and Silver Star Road. MetroPlan and the city of Ocoee hosted an informational forum at the Woman’s Club of Ocoee on
Thursday, March 14, to present the recommended road improvements and collect feedback from area residents. Previously, Silver Star Road had been planned to be widened to four lanes with a center turn lane between State Road 429 and Clarke Road. But further evaluation of the roadway led MetroPlan and Ocoee to consider keeping
it as a two-lane road, said Nick Lepp, the director of transportation planning for MetroPlan Orlando. “Silver Star Road was planned to be widened to four lanes,” Lepp said. “But we wanted to take a new look at it and ask, ‘Does it really need four lanes? Is there someSEE PLANS PAGE 4
