VITALITY CENTER OPENS IN DR. PHILLIPS

The Vitality Center Orlando hosted recently its open house in celebration of its new wellness center on Sand Lake Road in Dr. Phillips.

The new center, the brainchild of Deborah Linden, who also owns The Vineyard Wine Bar and Healthy Bistro, provides personalized wellness programs that focus on nutri-

tion and a balanced lifestyle to help maximize energy, boost immunity and combat disease. Its Balanced Lifestyle Programs include wellness coaching and programming, massage, nutrition and meal planning, reflexology, aromatherapy, essential oils, colonics, detox, anti-disease programs and wellness products.

BIRTH PLACE EXPANDS WEST ORANGE PRACTICE The Birth Place announced recently that its patients can continue to get personalized pregnancy care and also have the option to deliver in a hospital.

Pregnant woman who want personalized pre- and postnatal care with a maternitycare team in downtown Winter Garden can choose to have all their gynecological services performed at The Birth Place while still having the option to give birth at South Lake Hospital in Clermont.

CHC MOVES TO NEW CENTER Community Health Centers Inc. has relocated its Pine Hills center from Princeton Plaza to a new medical and dental center in Orlando.

CHILD NEUROLOGIST JOINS TEAM Florida Hospital Medical Group welcomed Dr. Nitzmari MelendezVazquez, a physician treating pediatric epilepsy and founding physician of the new Center for Child Neurology.

“We’re very excited to have Dr. Melendez establish this much-needed practice in Central Florida,” said Dr. Ki Hyeong Lee, medical director of the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Florida Hospital for Children.

“Her specialized training and research in pediatric epilepsy and other seizure disorders will be of great benefit to our group and the Orlando community.”

Melendez earned her medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico, from which she graduated with honors and was awarded clinical distinction for clinical and academic achievement. Her research includes the study of rare immune diseases and infections affecting the central nervous system.

Most recently, she practiced at Augusta University Medical Center, where she served as neurology chief resident.

Her areas of specialty include demyelinating diseases, epilepsy, headaches, movement disorders, peripheral neuropathy and seizures.

Wellness through knowledge

After 38 years working in the medical field, Cheree Albert — a certified nurse practitioner and health coach — decided to focus on providing health education and promoting lifestyle modification via community outreach programs.

T

hroughout her career as a nurse, Cheree Albert had many conversations with people from all walks of life — people who were sick, people who were critically ill, people with life-changing diagnoses and even people near death.

During those conversations, Albert — the owner of Integrity Health Source LLC — witnessed a disturbing lack of knowledge some patients had regarding healthy eating habits and lifestyle management. She informed them of ways to help themselves become healthier but realized she couldn’t reach those people when they most needed it — before they got sick.

Although a huge part of a nurse’s job is health education, Albert finally decided to take it a step further and become more proactive in providing health advice to individuals, families, businessmen and people from all walks of life.

With that in mind, Albert resolved to make a career transition and became a full-time nurse practitioner and wellness coach to create community outreach programs to educate others about healthy living habits and diets.

“The reason that I feel so passionate about is that I loved bedside (nursing),” she said. “I loved my private practice, but I could only see a certain number of people in a prescribed amount of time. And if you’re in a sickcare model, then you’re seeing them when they’re already sick — which is awesome, and there’s a lot of amazing people doing that — but they weren’t as many opportunities to have conversations about the other things you can do to minimize your risks for those illnesses and diseases you don’t want to get.”

Albert realized the traditional health model presents some

challenges for people with busy schedules or financial constraints and designed hers to meet people where they are. So, as part of her efforts, she regularly hosts workshops at the Maitland Community Center, Tanner Hall, Winter Park Community Center, homes, coffee shops, parks and more.

“In this way, we’re also reaching the people who don’t even know that they need to care about these things, because that’s where we can do some really great work,” she said. “So if you rely only on a sick-care model, then you’re really only reaching people when they’re sick or there’s been a diagnosis or something that makes them have a reason to come to you. So if you really look creatively and come to people where they are ... then you get a chance to meet everybody.”

She’s even designed workshops

for kids, which include games and activities to help children understand the difference between the foods they should consume because of their nutritional value. One activity she uses is called “traffic-light eating.”

“It helps them understand what are some better foods to choose than others,” she said. “And the reason why I like ‘traffic-light eating’ versus ‘this is a good food and this is a bad food’ or ‘you shouldn’t eat this’ is that it levels the playing field. Everyone knows what a traffic light is.”

Albert’s next speaking event will be at 6:45 p.m. March 27, at Tanner Hall, 29 W. Garden Ave., Winter Garden. The free event is open to the public, and the topic, in line with National nutrition Month, will be “What’s in Your Food and Why Does it Matter?”

Albert will discuss what foods to

buy organic, the effects of flavor enhancers, energy drinks, trans fats and more.

Albert hopes her efforts and guidance aid people’s understanding of how to live their life in a way that minimizes their risk of contracting serious illnesses or, if they already are sick, becoming healthy again.

“People think their DNA is their destiny; they think that they got what they go — especially seniors in their second half of life,” she said. “But there is hope at whatever age and stage they’re in, and there is an opportunity to have a conversation that will make a difference.”

Countdown to summer Sonata West, West Orange’s first independent-living facility for seniors, is on track for a July opening and is readying to showcase its model apartment beginning April 2.

Sonata Senior Living’s response to an increased demand for senior-living options for higherfunctioning seniors is nearing completion.

Sonata West, located off Daniels Road and Roper Road in Winter Garden, is on track to complete construction on time and open in July. The facility, billed as resortstyle senior living, also will get a chance to show off its model apartment with a grand reveal scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 2.

With the progression of vertical construction continuing along and Sonata West’s opening date drawing nearer, Shelley Esden,

the COO of Sonata Senior Living, said the buzz about the facility is growing.

“People are thrilled about the offering of independent living, and a more upscale model, in West Orange County,” Esden said. “It’s the best of all worlds: convenience, location and amenities.”

The convenience and location to which Esden refers include Sonata West’s proximity to shopping and dining at the Winter Garden Village, minutes down the road, as well as the proximity to Florida Hospital Winter Garden.

W

hen Linda Mangaroo stumbled upon the West Orange Seniors two years ago, she never imagined just how much the group would come to mean to her.

Now, her weekly schedule revolves around life at the Tom Ison Seniors Center.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are card days — the game is Liverpool Rummy. Wednesdays are Mexican Train Dominos. And on Sundays, she volunteers to work the concession stand during bingo.

When she’s not at the West Orange Seniors, she probably can

be found walking laps at the West Oaks Mall.

Her schedule is so jam-packed that she and her husband, Badase, often leave the house around 8 a.m. and return around 4 p.m.

“I just stay really, really busy, but I love it,” Mangaroo said.

Mangaroo’s mantra of staying busy is exactly the kind of thing health experts agree is the best thing for anyone older than 65.

According the National Institute of Health, maintaining an active lifestyle as a senior citizen can improve strength, fitness, balance and mood, as well as help prevent diseases such as heart disease and osteoporosis.

At the Tom Ison Seniors Center,

helping local senior citizens stay healthy is one of their primary goals.

“The bingo takes care of your mind, and then we have line dancing and things like that to keep yourself mobile,” said Wendell Singrey, president of the center.

The center currently is home to about 450 members, with most coming from Ocoee and Winter Garden.

“The people here are very active,” Singrey said.

workforce as a substitute teacher for several years before finally opting for a life of retirement.

That’s when she found the West Orange Seniors.

She was searching for her polling station when she pulled into the parking lot at the senior center. Inside, she met Singrey, who told her about the West Orange Seniors in addition to giving her directions to the polling station.

Mangaroo immediately filled out an application to join the group.

“I’m so glad I stumbled upon it,” she said about that day two years ago.

When her husband, a U.S. Air Force veteran, retired from his job at the convention center, Mangaroo talked him into joining the West Orange Seniors, as well.

“We absolutely love it,” she said. “We try to do everything we can to volunteer and help out.”

And if she hadn’t found the West Orange Seniors by accident two years ago, Mangaroo suspects she probably would have gone online in search of senior activities and found them that way instead.

In addition to the weekly activities at the center, the couple frequently participates in the group’s trips every few months.

In May, they will travel to Memphis, Tennessee, and Mangaroo said they’re already planning to sign up for the Caribbean cruise planned for February 2018.

It also helps that the center is only a few miles from Mangaroo’s house. If she hits all green lights, she could drive from her home to the senior center in about six minutes, she said.

If it weren’t for the West Orange Seniors, Mangaroo said her retirement would probably be boring.

“I would probably be at home doing nothing,” she said. “I would be sitting, just wasting away and looking at the TV all day.”

group provides, it also creates new friendships.

“I’ve met a lot of nice people, and I really enjoy being around them,” Mangaroo said.

The West Orange Seniors, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1978, and the sign out front says it all: “Come on in.

Let’s have fun.”

Although the group’s purpose is to help seniors stay connected with each other and healthy, it’s also about having fun, Singrey said.

“This is the best, ultimate of senior centers,” he said. “This is a fun place to come to.”

But fun or not, Mangaroo said the service the group provides to the seniors in the area is priceless.

“These need to be put up everywhere,” she said about senior centers. “We need them.

It’s worth it.”

Her sentiments were echoed by Singrey.

Every city needs a senior center, he said.

Retirement is about enjoying oneself, Mangaroo said, but it won’t last if you don’t stay healthy.

“We all hope we get to the point where we can do this,” she said about enjoying her retirement.

“I just hope my health lasts so I can keep doing this.”

Dehydration a common concern for seniors

Dehydration is the most common fluid and electrolyte disturbance among the elderly population today.

Because more than 75% of the human body is made up of water, staying hydrated is important to keep our bodies functioning properly and to avoid acidosis. Unfortunately for many seniors, the only time they drink water is to swallow their medicine, therefore becoming highly acidic, which

creates other health issues.

The human body is in a constant state of losing water, even when sedentary. If fluids aren’t replaced, the body eventually does not have enough water available to perform the many vital bodily functions, such as improving blood flow and promoting metabolism. Water also promotes healthy digestion and the elimination of acidic-waste and toxins. Dioxins, pollutants, food additives and carcinogens are all flushed out of the body by healthy functional water.

Proper hydration empowers the immune system and moistens areas of the body where bacteria and viruses can invade most easily. People who do not drink enough good water will lack energy and get sick more easily.

As we get older, body water content decreases, the risk for dehydration increases and the consequences become more serious. Dehydration is a frequent cause of hospitalization of seniors and one of the 10 most

frequent diagnoses responsible for hospitalization in the United States.

It’s common for seniors to deliberately restrict their fluid or beverage intake if they are suffering from incontinence and embarrassed about having to use the restroom frequently. Furthermore, those who suffer from dementia often do not remember if they have consumed any water in a given day.

Dehydration is among the most common concerns in assisted-living facilities. In one study, the fluid intake of 40 nursing-home residents was monitored. The researchers found nearly all of these patients were inadequately hydrated.

Furthermore, the study found that 25 of the 40 patients had illnesses that may have been caused by or related to their dehydration issues.

Seniors who live alone or in nursing facilities may not have the mobility to get beverages by themselves and may be

embarrassed to ask for help. In addition, many medications may affect fluid status and water intake, and health care professionals may be unaware that a patient’s fluid intake has declined. For example, an older adult taking diuretic-type medication and not replacing the extra fluid lost is at a higher risk for dehydration.

Fortunately, dehydration is a

manageable disease, and adults who know the warning signs and preventative measures are in a better position to help keep seniors better hydrated.

As a caregiver, it’s critical to become more aware of the need for hydration with senior care.

Offer water more frequently and keep water nearby and visible for seniors. Also, encourage at least eight to 10 ounces whenever medication is taken. Drinking electrolyzed antioxidant-rich living water can help maintain fluid balance for everyone, particularly for seniors at risk to the damaging effects of dehydration.

Have you thought about trying yoga to improve your health and wellness?

A lot of people have, and it makes sense.

According to WebMD, yoga gives you strength, flexibility and mind-body awareness. All are key components to having the freedom to live the life you want.

But how do you get started?

Believe it or not, it’s easier than you think. Here’s a simple checklist to help.

1

GET CLEARANCE FROM YOUR DOCTOR. It’s important that you’re cleared for physical activity before you begin any new exercise program … even yoga. If you haven’t been active in a while, your doctor may need to tell you if yoga is safe or not for you. If you feel unsteady on your feet, feel dizzy, take medicine that makes you feel dizzy or have any chronic health conditions (asthma, heart disease, etc), it’s a good idea to get the “go ahead” from your health care provider.

BE ABLE TO GET UP AND DOWN FROM THE GROUND. Most yoga studios are simple rooms filled with people and yoga mats. They are not equipped with special grips or handles to help people get up and down off the ground.

If you can’t get up and down off the ground by yourself, don’t worry. You can still enjoy yoga.

You can practice in the safety of your home. Try following along with a great DVD such as Relax Into Yoga for Seniors (pranamaya.com).

BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF. This is a tough one. I’ll bet you’re thinking, “I used to be able to touch my toes,” or, “Twenty years ago, I could do this with ease.” And those thoughts are normal. Everyone has them.

But the important thing is to honor where your abilities are now. The benefits of yoga will be yours when you commit to a regular practice. Two sessions a week is a great place to start.

And before you know it, you’ll be doing great. Remember the ancient eastern proverb: “The tortoise always wins.”

MODIFY WHEN NEEDED. One of the great things about yoga is that it is a personal experience. Even if you’re in a room full of people, everyone is striving to achieve different goals. So don’t worry if you can’t bend your knee as deeply as your neighbor. Don’t stress out if you need to lean against the wall for a balance pose. Everybody is different, and everyone will encourage you to do your best.

BREATHE. Yoga is known for its deep relaxation and stress-relieving benefits.

Did you know proper breathing is the key? It’s true. Breathing in and out through your nose and from your diaphragm sends a signal to your brain, “Relax.”

And when you relax, you’re less likely to strain yourself during your yoga class. Try this. Sit up tall. Take a deep breath through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Now breathe in and out through your nose.

Your belly should rise when you inhale, and your belly should fall when you exhale. Breathe like this for one minute. Do you notice a difference? Now imagine spreading that great feeling over the duration of a yoga class.

lthough health care options in West Orange County are growing and expanding with the population, there are some specialized services — such as neurology — that are not yet as widely available.

But with its newly opened Neurology Specialists of West Orange department, Florida Hospital Medical Group is ensuring its Winter Garden- and West Orange-area neurology patients have local access to the care they require.

The new practice is led by Dr. Diana Balsalobre, a native of Spain and a neurologist who has been

practicing in clinical and private practice for more than 20 years.

And as the month-old department grows and becomes more established in the near future, Florida Hospital hopes to recruit another provider.

“Neurology is a much-needed specialty — not just in West Orange but throughout the tricounty area,” said David Breen, Florida Hospital’s corporate communications manager. “Dr. Balsalobre will provide a much-needed resource to our patients who are in need of neurologic care.”

Neurology Specialists of West Orange NEUROLOGY opened in February to serve the tri-county SPECIALISTS OF WEST ORANGE area with a localized approach.

Balsalobre, who is fluent in both English and Spanish, was born in Madrid and moved to Puerto Rico at age 11. She earned her medical degree from Universidad Central del Caribe in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, completed her internship and residency in Miami and her fellowship in St. Louis, Missouri.

But she and her husband, along with their three children, decided to move back to Puerto Rico to be closer to family. They operated a private neurology practice there for years before her husband decided to try something new — he accepted a position at Florida Hospital.

Although Balsalobre stayed behind in Puerto Rico for a few months after to take care of the office and patients and find someone to continue it, they ultimately had to close their practice.

She moved to Orlando to join

her family last July and started her new position as a Florida Hospital neurologist in February.

“For me, it’s very exciting because it’s something brand new; we’re basically the ones (who) are setting this from scratch,” she said.

“When I came here (to Orlando), I interviewed in some other ares around Orlando, but then (Florida Hospital) offered this to me, and I thought it was what I really wanted. The community needs this specialty. There’s no one to offer it here.”

Neurologists care for patients with conditions pertaining to the central and peripheral nervous systems, which include the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.

Balsalobre helps diagnose and treat patients with illnesses such as dementia, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injuries and more.

And because many of these conditions are chronic and debilitating, she will continue to see
