Twitter posts belonging to a local teacher are under scrutiny following a parent’s decision to publicly share screenshots of the tweets on Facebook.

The tweets, which may be interpreted as anti-Islamic, were writ-

ten by Sundai Brown, a Bridgewater Middle School civics teacher employed by the school since 2009.

their son was diagnosed with cancer.

“The entire West Orange community, and even beyond, showed so much support that it absolutely humbled the entire family,” Staci Bradshaw said.

Neighbors took meals to the house. Fundraisers were held in multiple restaurants, including The Tasting Room, Casa Jimenez, The Big Easy and Crooked Can. Family friends organized tournaments, and Gunnar’s friends shaved their heads in support. A GoFundMe account was set up to raise funds to go toward medical bills. The family received a donation from the Jimmy Crabtree Cancer Fund, as well.

“We are overwhelmed by the support,” Staci Bradshaw said.

Held Thursday, March 8, at Bill Breeze Park in Ocoee, the event is an annual community favorite. Restaurateurs and local businesses come together to offer the best of their food and drinks, and to represent their respective organizations. The event this year drew hundreds, who bundled up on a chilly evening to mix, mingle and taste the best of West Orange.

Gunnar Bradshaw is back on his feet and has returned to college to complete his studies as a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

The Winter Garden man was forced to take a break last year when his knee pain — thought to be caused by extensive baseball playing — was, in fact, osteosarcoma.

Bradshaw, 21, endured 10 weeks of chemotherapy before heading into surgery to remove his knee and eight inches of his femur and replace them with an implant.

This was followed by 19 more weeks of chemotherapy. He had to put school on hold while he spent two to six days at a time in the hospital at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

On Jan. 15 at the hospital, Bradshaw rang the liminal bell, a ceremonial bell that symbolizes a patient’s transition into a life without cancer.

He will continue rehabilitation to gain strength in his leg, and he returns every three months for the first two years for scans.

After that, he will go back for a checkup every six months.

Bradshaw returned to EmbryRiddle about a month ago. He is attending on a baseball scholarship.

“It has been mentally and physically challenging, but he is excited to be back in classroom, as well as back with his baseball team,” Staci Bradshaw, his mother, said. “He wants to finish his business degree and pursue a career possibly in finance.”

Tweets protected as free speech account in September 2017 once she Googled the teacher’s name after being informed that her son’s friend had overheard Brown make an inappropriate comment about immigrants.

While scrolling through Brown’s tweets and retweets, she stumbled upon several she took as being highly offensive to Muslims.

One tweet dated July 28, 2017, read: “Imams worldwide instruct Muslims to invade western countries, outbreed them, overthrow governments, kill infidels and implement sharia law.”

Another dated May 23, 2017, read: “When will we be more concerned with protecting the very lives of people than the FEELINGS of Muslims and the ‘religion’ of Islam?”

Kikhia took screenshots and contacted the school to make an official complaint and request her daughter be removed from Brown’s class.

“I was afraid for her,” she said.

“When I send my child to school for eight hours a day, I would expect that if any other child at school says something to my daughter, the teacher would defend her. I don’t think that she would defend her.”

She discussed her concerns with Bridgewater Middle School Assistant Principal Nicole Mutters and was informed the case would be sent to district officials.

On Nov. 29, she followed up with an email to Mutters to inquire about the investigation’s status.

“The administration did complete the investigation and the issue was addressed appropriately with the teacher,” Mutters wrote in an email addressed to Kikhia on Dec. 7. “There is not a case number as that is not a piece of the process, and no other investigative information may be shared at this time.

Please be assured we have followed through and completed the appropriate action from the school and district.”

Feeling the district’s response was unsatisfactory, on March 6, Kikhia forwarded the email thread to Gregory Moody, the district’s area superintendent for the west learning community. Moody replied with an assurance the incident was addressed appropriately.

“I didn’t get any resolution from any of it,” Kikhia said. “And everything at this point was still up and the teacher was still employed at the school. So I messaged him back to ask how was this dealt with ... and I didn’t get a response back from him. So I just want to make

This has been the case at the Fullers Cross/Ocoee-Apopka roads intersection during rush hour. Because of the lack of a leftturn lane on each approach, the intersection is highly vulnerable to traffic jams.

Residents frustrated with the regular congestion of the intersection have emailed Ocoee city leaders asking for a fix. During the March 6 commission meeting, Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson announced city staff has begun the process of making improvements to the intersection with the help of Orange County.

“It’s a process, but the county’s going to let us take the lead on it and start the process so that we

can do the intersection improvements,” Johnson said.

Ocoee City Planner Mike Rumer said the city plans to add a leftturn lane for each approach of the intersection, but it will first need to produce engineering plans, evaluate the best options to procure construction services for the intersection improvements and get cost estimates.

“We had a meeting with the Orange County Public Works Division, and they agreed to be a 50% partner in this effort,” Rumer said.

“We have collected considerable funds ... almost $300,000 from developers who developed in that area as part of their proportionate share of mitigation. And we also have right-of-way to contribute, so we’re waiting on an overall cost estimate, but we have a ballpark idea.”

Some parents emphasized Brown is free to exercise her freedom of speech as long as it does not interfere with her teaching.

“Teachers are human, and they should have a right to do or say what they want outside of school as long as it doesn’t affect the students,” said Rhonda Walker, a mother of two students in Brown’s class. “At some point, we’re not going to have any good teachers because they can’t do anything.

She’s a great teacher. She sends us emails at 11 at night. All she does is work for these kids, and you want your kids to learn from someone who is knowledgeable.”

OCPS Media Relations Manager Lorena Arias said the district does not fire its employees for their political views.

“OCPS finds the political views expressed by Ms. Sundai Brown to be offensive, and inconsistent with our mission statement and anti-discriminatory policies,” Arias wrote in an email. “However, the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects the rights of all persons, including public employees, to have offensive, and even abhorrent political beliefs. …

“I believe this should be considered a violation of their code of ethics,” she said. “I already pulled my child out; she’s not at risk anymore. But my concern is for the children who are exposed to her every day. I don’t believe that she can teach and be unbiased, especially civics.

“I don’t understand how her beliefs, as extreme as they are, how she would be able to check that at the door,” she said. “To defame or share wrong information insulting a minority group of any kind; teachers should not be able to do that. I believe they should be held to a higher standard than other people because they come into contact with kids every day — kids from all different types of backgrounds, races, religions and nationalities.”

n To accommodate the construction of the new Ocoee City Hall, the city’s Employee Health Clinic will need to be relocated. The commission authorized $100,000 from the 2017 general fund budget for a new capital project to relocate the health clinic. School-safety advocates earned a victory with the success of a state bill that includes multiple provisions related to gun reform and school security.

Senate Bill 7026, known as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, is a 100page bill being touted as the state’s first successful passage of a gun control measure in two decades.

The bill barely survived the state Senate with a vote of 20-18 on Monday, March, 5, and was approved 67-50 by House representatives after a contentious eight-hour debate on Wednesday, March 7.

On Friday, March 9, Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill into law, despite his reservations about a controversial provision regarding the school marshal program, which allocates $67 million to fund the School Marshal Program.

“Every student in Florida has the right to learn in a safe environment, and every parent has the right to send their kids to school knowing that they will return safely at the end of the day,” Scott said Friday. “Today, I am signing bipartisan legislation that helps us achieve that.”

“OCPS School Board members have openly expressed their opposition to arming teachers in our schools,” OCPS Superintendent Barbara Jenkins wrote in an email.

“The new law provides $67 million specifically for arming school personnel. We had hoped ... that those dollars would be combined with funding for additional School Resource Officers. Such an adjustment would have allowed districts to use all of the funds for SROs if preferred. We are disappointed this option will not be available.”

The guardian program also concerns parents involved in M.O.V.E., a local group of parents that formed after the Parkland shooting and advocates for school-safety issues. Julie Sadlier, a community advocate and co-founder, said the group agrees with gun ownership rights but holds a firm stance regarding guns in the classroom.

“We are not excited about teachers or school personnel being trained to carry firearms, because we feel our teachers and school staff should be there as educators,” Sadlier said. “And with the testing standards and the pressure of other things they have to worry about ... the last thing they need to worry about is where to lock up their gun.

Bridgewater Middle School Principal Andrew Jackson agreed it is a step in the right direction.

“I’m all for anything they can do to provide security and safety, but my concern is always: Is it funded and is it funded adequately?” he said. “Because they tend to have initiatives that are unfunded and that ends up being a burden on the schools. And every time we add another layer of security, it challenges one of the purposes of a school, which is to be an open community space. So as we get tighter and tighter, it makes it tougher for the community to come and enjoy our campuses.”

ot everyone knows how to swim — and that is something those who attended the Gift of Swimming’s poolside social hope to

change.

Held Friday, March 9, at the SouthWest Aquatics swimming facility, the annual affair is one of the Gift of Swimming organization’s major fundraisers and brings the West Orange swimming community together to support those who need it.

The nonprofit’s aim is to provide underprivileged children basic swimming survival lessons — a skill its leaders feel is a necessity in the Sunshine State.

“In Central Florida, there’s water everywhere — ponds, pools, lakes,” Executive Director Susan Polder said. “Florida unfortunately usually leads the nation in drownings, and most of them SEE SWIMMING PAGE 8

The swim lessons — packaged in a five-week training schedule where children as young as 6 months are taught to float and stay above water — are the same ones offered to paying customers. Polder said families who receive food stamps or have assistance from social programs are eligible for the nonprofit’s scholarships.

The group was founded 15 years ago by Joy McGinty, owner of SouthWest Aquatics and a swim coach for more than two decades.

Although McGinty typically found herself in the water teaching lessons five days a week, she had time to find new students.

“Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I had the ability to swim some kids, so I called some pediatricians I knew and the church across the street to see if people who couldn’t afford it needed lessons,” McGinty said.

“I ended up teaching 26 children.

Come January, I knew there were a lot of kids out there that needed help learning how to swim.”

Between the poolside socials, which started three years ago, and annual 5K races, the nonprofit brings in around $40,000 for scholarships, Polder said.

McGinty believes children can benefit from swimming both physically and mentally.

“My children took swim lessons when they were young, and I was just amazed at how it made them more self-sufficient,” McGinty said. “(Children taking lessons)

When William Silva was a child in his home country of Brazil, he dreamed of moving to the United States. When he got older, he made annual trips, bringing Brazilian tourists to Orlando and the theme parks.

In December, he realized his goal of moving to America and starting a business.

Silva has opened a Sylvan Learning Center franchise in the Good Homes Plaza shopping center in Ocoee. He brought his family with him in hopes of giving his three children a better chance for success.

“It’s one thing I really wanted to have when I was a little kid: knowing English, any studying here,” Silva said. “I wanted to give them that opportunity. We have a poor education in Brazil. If you want the best education, you pay thousands and thousands for that.”

Silva’s 8-, 13- and 14-year-old children are starting classes at the center. He said they know a little English and are working hard to learn the language.

Sylvan offers tutoring in math, academic reading and writing, in addition to classes in study skills, homework support and college test preparation. Three years ago, the only two Sylvan centers in West Orange closed. That left

local folks needing assistance to go to Kissimmee and Clermont.

Silva knows the value of a good education. He graduated college with degrees in English, literature and English grammar and owned 15 Fisk education center franchises in Brazil. Today, his father, brother and sister-in-law manage those centers to allow him to help students in this country.

“Thousands of Brazilians are living here, and they need help with their kids,” Silva said. “They need help with their English, and the kids are at public schools, and they need help with tutoring, especially in reading and math.

“Sylvan is for American people, but Brazilians need us as well,” Silva said.

Ruth M. Parnham, age 97, of Winter Garden, passed away at Orlando Regional Medical Center on Feb. 24, 2018.

She was born on Feb. 11, 1921, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the daughter of George R. Griffiths and Carolyn Griffiths.

She graduated from McKeesport High School, class of 1939.

Her first career was as a big band singer in Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C. She married major league pitcher Louis Norman “Bobo” Newsom in 1942 and traveled with him to all of the major league venues. In 1953, she and “Bobo” retired to the Orlando area, and she has been a resident of this area ever since. She also worked at Diana Shops and Petrie Stores. She married James Parnham in 1991.

Ruth is survived by her brother, George Roger Griffiths; brotherin-law, Bob Cutting; four nephews; one niece; and six great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Jean Cutting; and two husbands.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. March 27, 2018, at Hyde Park Community Center in Winter Garden. Please come and share stories and memories of Ruth with her family and friends.

This exciting week of festivities is dedicated to the hard work of natural gas utility employees and their accomplishments in the community. Warriors, Eagles fall in respective state semifinals Postseason runs for the boys basketball teams at West Orange and CFCA came to an end last week.

Two area teams made it to high-school basketball’s biggest stage in Florida last week — the RP Funding Center in Lakeland, home of the FHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships.

Grant Riller, a 2015 graduate of Ocoee High School, scored 20 points and added four steals in College of Charleston’s 83-76 overtime victory over Northeastern in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship last week.

The win earned the Cougars a berth in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament — their first trip to “The Big Dance” since 1999. Riller was named the Most Outstanding Player for the CAA Tournament. A sophomore, Riller has averaged 18.7 points per game this season.

However, neither the West Orange Warriors or the CFCA Eagles were able to advance past their respective state semifinal games. Both the Warriors and the Eagles fell to the eventual state champions in their classifications.

A

thletic trainers spend the majority of their time working in the background.

They are on the sidelines during practices and games.

They are on location before a high-school sports game for setup and often are among the last

— if not the last — people to leave.

They are not intended to be the center of attention, nor do they want to be.

But then there are the moments when a large “oh” from the crowd is followed by silence, when play has stopped and there is a student-athlete on the ground in pain — and suddenly, everyone is looking at the athletic trainer.

It’s a moment local trainers such as Ocoee High’s Nikki Reis, West Orange High’s Matthew Laws and Foundation Academy’s Ranil Sirigampola all have experienced. And although each has his or her own explanation of what comes over them during those moments, the essence is the same: laser-focus on the athlete.

“I go into tunnel-vision,” Sirigampola said. “I’m reacting from my experience and what I’ve learned, and I’m making the best decision at the time. … I don’t SEE TRAINERS PAGE 15

The 100-yard butterfly. That was my first FLAG time.

Ocoee Middle defeats Bridgewater in hoops playoffs L ocal middle school basketball teams met on the court March 6 at Ocoee Middle School for the first round of the OCPS Middle School Boys Basketball Tournament.

Despite trailing by 12 points at the end of the third quarter, the host Ocoee Cardinals rallied to defeat the visiting Bridgewater Middle School Bobcats 38-32.

The Cardinals, who had an undefeated regular season, hosted and defeated Discovery Middle School 61-54 March 8 in the quarterfinal round.

Ocoee hosted Apopka’s Wolf Lake Middle School in the tournament’s semifinal round March 12, after press time. The OCPS Middle School Boys Basketball Championship is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. March 15 at Edgewater High School in Orlando.

Do you have any goals for this year?

I have a goal of getting a TripleA (or AAA; a USA Swimming standard) while I’m 9.

IDENTIFYING A PASSION We asked three of the head athletic trainers for local high schools why they got into the field.

Outside of these moments, athletic trainers operate relatively as unsung heroes of the high-school sports community. Each March presents an opportunity to disrupt that, though, with National Athletic Training Month. Sponsored by the National Association of Athletic Trainers, the effort is geared toward awareness about the important work of athletic trainers, and the 2018 slogan is “Compassionate care for all.”

EMPHASIS ON ‘ATHLETIC’

Those in the field hope to spread awareness that they are athletic trainers — not personal trainers or sports-specific trainers.

“A lot of times people think ‘athletic trainers,’ and we’re commonly mistaken for personal trainers — or that we are just the people who get ice,” Reis said.

“As a profession, we are trying to make it known that we are health care professionals. … National Athletic Training Month kind of gives us that push. We’re not ‘trainers.’”

Indeed, Laws — head athletic trainer at West Orange along with his wife, Jennifer Laws — said many people do not realize athletic trainers are licensed health professionals, recognized by the Florida Department of Health.

Eagles knew the margin for error would be thin.

Unfortunately, struggles on both ends of the floor doomed CFCA to trail from start to finish, as its historic season came to an end. CFCA fell behind early, trailing 25-12 through one quarter and looking much like a team that had not been on the stage before.

The Eagles battled back, though, outscoring Miami Christian 17-10 in the second quarter and starting strong in the third quarter — CFCA cut the lead to four points midway through the third quarter and seemed to be rolling.

That’s when foul trouble began to haunt the Eagles.

“I took an athletic training class at Cypress Creek High School.

The biggest thing was I absolutely love the medical side of things, and I have a passion for athletics, so I kind of could meld the two together. Helping athletes get back to the field is something that’s extremely rewarding for me to do.”

“I knew I wanted to do it when I took the First Aid and Safety and Care and Prevention courses in high school at Colonial High. … I realized that it was my favorite class my senior year — I was always looking forward to it, and my athletic trainer at the time was pretty much my role model.”

“We’re first-responders,” Laws said. “We see injuries at their worst, and we have to react to them. … We make split-second decisions that, in some cases, may be life-impacting, as well.”

For athletic trainers such as Laws and Reis, who are full-time staff members at their schools,

there are additional responsibilities, as well. Most Orange County Public Schools high schools have dedicated athletic trainers — West Orange and Ocoee each have two, in addition to other contracted athletic trainers through CORA Physical Therapy — and those staffers often are asked to teach

Several CFCA players racked up fouls in the first half, and early in the third quarter Eagles senior standout Dante Treacy was saddled with his fourth foul just as Miami Christian (25-8) began to pull away again.

Afterward, CFCA head coach Jonathan McClintock praised Treacy as a cornerstone of the program’s resurgence in recent years.

“This young man (Treacy) has written a story that’s very rare

these days — he built something from scratch,” McClintock said.

“He wasn’t the only builder, but he was the master carpenter.”

Then, looking over to his left where junior standout Jordan Preaster was at the postgame podium, McClintock added a hopeful note for the future.

“What you’ve got here is a guy who gets to continue that process,” McClintock said, gesturing to Preaster.

The next day, Miami Christian defeated Impact Christian 59-46 in the Class 2A State Final, making it three championships in four seasons for the Victors.

Later in the week, on March 9, West Orange faced the daunting task of trying to knock of the Oak Ridge Pioneers — ranked No. 18 in the nation by MaxPreps’ Xcellent 25.

“I was going through the catalog at UCF — I knew I wanted to do something in sports medicine — and I was like, ‘Wow, this sounds really cool.’ I got into it, and I’ve loved it ever since.”

“It’s actually turned out to be something I thoroughly enjoy — getting to know the kids and getting to impact kids’ lives in that way,” Laws said.

SPREADING KNOWLEDGE

Of course, whether they are in the classroom or taping a player’s ankle before a big game, athletic trainers always are looking to impart knowledge along the way.

Although the Warriors played tough early, they could not keep pace with the Pioneers, eventually falling to 86-64 in the FHSAA Class 9A State Semifinals.

“I felt like a couple kids (for Oak Ridge) made some shots early that got us out of our rhythm,” West Orange head coach Eric Jones said. “(Oak Ridge) continued to make shots.”

West Orange trailed 14-11 early, showing some promise in a game where it was clearly the underdog, but the Pioneers went on a 7-2 run to close the first quarter and outscored the Warriors 22-12 in the second — leaving West Orange facing a daunting 43-25 halftime deficit.

trainers do is the injury-prevention aspect,” Reis said. “So, at all times, we are educating … so we can hopefully prevent those injuries from occurring.”

Many public high schools, such as Ocoee and West Orange, also have programs for student athletic trainers. In fact, later this month, there will be a student athletic training Olympics competition in Winter Park.

For staff athletic trainers such as Reis and Ocoee’s other fulltime athletic trainer, Coryn Novak, having a million things to do becomes a tad easier with the help of the students.

“They’re out there just as often as we are,” Reis said.

It can also be important that athletic trainers learn as much as they can about all of the varsity sports offered at their school.

“It helps a lot to know as much of the sport as you can,” Sirigampola said. “Then you can get on their level, talk their vernacular, as well as understand what kind of stresses they’re put under.”

Ultimately, athletic trainers are as much a part of the teams as the coaches or players. Especially for those tied to one school, the investment in those teams’ successes is another perk of the work.

“I get thoroughly invested,” Laws said. “I get invested in what these kids do, because they enjoy doing it, and I see how much enjoyment they get out of it. Me being part of that — I get highly involved.”

Pioneers finished with doubledigit scoring.

West Orange (17-13) was led by 20 points from senior Troy signee KJ Simon, in his final game as a high-school hoops player. JaMarcus Clark chipped in 10 points.

The next night, Oak Ridge topped previously unbeaten Wellington 71-60 to win the Pioneers’ first state title.

Afterward, despite the disappointment, Jones praised his team for returning the program to this point — the FHSAA Final Four — for the first time since 2005.

“I’m proud of these guys for what they’ve given me — an unbelievable experience,” Jones said. “I knew based on some of the things that happened during the summer, I knew we could make a run.”
