ties and benefit its student and alumni talent, as well as assist TV4 in scaling its workforce.

TV4 operates more than 30 genre-focused channels that reach hundreds of millions of people globally. It was founded

by Jon Cody, former head of Fox Digital Media and the launch general manager for Hulu.

As part of the agreement, TV4 will relocate its global headquarters to the Full Sail campus and bring both its original production studio and portfolio of streaming services and companies along. “(Jon Cody) really saw a real opportunity to create an unlimited number of virtual channels that can be streamed globally,” said TV4 Chief Marketing Officer Larry Baird. “They really have been working on that the last few years, and right now, we have about 50 different focused genres — from home and garden to horror to boxing — and we’re launching new categories this year. … We’re able to curate the best available content from across the globe and use it to create genre-focused channels and bring it to new audiences.”

Rick Ramsey, education director of visual arts at Full Sail, said the partnership will benefit both parties. TV4 is creating as well as serving as an outlet for content, he said, and it is also a conduit for content creators who don’t always have a home for their content.

“Full Sail is ready for that — we have amazing facilities and gear, and the thing we always do is

have our students work on their own projects,” Ramsey said. “I want to up that into working on things that will be seen. TV4 is in the business of making things seen. It kind of fits.”

“That’s part of why the relationship with Full Sail made sense, because we see this huge opportunity to generate new, original content and programming,” Baird said. “We needed a way to scale up quickly, so it was a perfect marriage in terms of finding a full, ready-to-go operation and great talent that can help us do that. It’s really a great shortcut, from our perspective, and gives us flexibility to access the best available talent and really quickly scale up.”

The partnership will kick off in April, and the collaboration adds to the region’s growing entertainment and technology landscape.

It also will provide employment opportunities to Full Sail graduates and real-world experience to students.

In the near future, TV4 plans to create hundreds of new jobs in the Orlando area, with a majority of hires to come from Full Sail’s graduate pool. The company also will provide students and faculty with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in areas such as video and multimedia content production, media operations and marketing.

The company will base its headquarters in a multipurpose office and production space on Full Sail’s campus. It has additional offices in Los Angeles, New York, Singapore and Rio de Janeiro.

Casey Tanous, director of public relations at Full Sail, said the university’s mission is to collaborate, innovate and educate. The collaboration between Full Sail and TV4, Tanous said, will allow students to learn and shadow behind the scenes from the TV4 crew. The entertainment company can utilize and hire Full Sail graduates, as well as educate students.

“This is a new world: It’s not the old way of tuning a TV into the network — this is streaming,” Tanous said. “(Students are) coming to school, they’re digital savvy, and they want to go to work for a company they believe in that speaks their language.

To be able to be recognized by a company like TV4, which (was) just named by Fast Company as one of the most innovative companies of 2019. That’s a big deal.

When you think about wanting to call Winter Park and Full Sail home, that speaks a lot to the graduates they’re looking to hire from Full Sail.”

Baird added the whole entertainment industry is undergoing a large paradigm shift and technology is moving so quickly, which is why TV4 is looking forward to have a tech-savvy team of talent onboard.

“On a fundamental level, we’re excited to work together to continue to bring interesting, exciting, authentic stories to the world,” he said. “There’s a lot of great stories to be told. Jon says, and I agree, that these are the executives and leaders of tomorrow in the entertainment space.”

Terry Griffin was known for his outgoing personality and strong dedication to his work.

Terry enjoyed a long career as a civil trial lawyer, practicing for almost 50 years. It was during his semi-retirement that Terry began to purse his passion for writing.

“He wanted a little extra to do — he’s not a person that would be happy just to do nothing in retirement,” Jean said.

“He always liked to write and thought he might like to write novels.”

Terry went on to write about 12 books, with three self-published.

The most recent novel, “Vindication,” was released

by Oceanview Publishing last November.

Terry’s passing came two years after receiving a double lung transplant for his ongoing battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

‘Be so big they can’t ignore you’

Maitland mystery author Terry Griffin died at age 76. hen Maitland resident Jean Griffin reflects on the life of her late husband, Terry, one thing is for certain: He never met a stranger.

Popular mystery author, semi-retired lawyer, man about town and Maitland local H. Terrell “Terry” Griffin died Thursday, Feb. 21, at 76. He leaves behind a body of written works that includes the renowned Matt Royal mystery series.

The books by the bestselling author focus on a rough-andtumble retired lawyer named Matt Royal, his ragtag group of friends, the many adventures they faced and mysteries they solved. Terry’s stories took place in real locations in Florida — mainly Longboat Key, where Terry and Jean vacationed together.

He even based many of his characters on actual people he met on Longboat. The friends that he made often became immortalized in the pages of his books.

“He liked to talk to people — he was very outgoing,” said Bob Gussin, CEO and co-founder of Oceanview Publishing, the Sarasota-based company that released Terry’s Matt Royal series. “Terry, at that point in his life, liked to sit in some of the local bars, and he knew everybody and talked to everybody while he had a beer.

“He had an approach to writing where he actually used really people as characters in some of the books, and he used their names,” he said. “You’d walk into a restaurant, and a waitress says, ‘Hey you’re Terry’s publishers — I’m so-and-so, and I’m in his book.’ It gave him a lot of attention locally.”

Terry was born Sept. 6, 1942, in Waycross, Georgia. When he was 12 years old, his family moved to Sanford, and Terry graduated in 1960 from Seminole High School.

He then served his country in the U.S. Army — stationed in Frankfort, Germany — and after his service attended Mercer University, where he met his wife.

Terry graduated in 1966 and then in 1968 from Mercer Law School before moving to Orlando with Jean and their son, Greg.

said his dear friend’s affable nature helped him to succeed wherever he went.

“Terry could do a direct or cross examination of a brain surgeon and appear to know the subject matter as well as he did, and then he could sit down on a park bench and have a nice conversation with a homeless person — and I’ve seen him do both and everybody in-between,” Wright said. “I think that, in part, is what made him such a successful attorney — because he literally could communicate with anybody. He continued that ability in his novel writing by assuming another mode of communication: the written word. … I miss him, and I love him dearly.”

Jean fondly remembers Terry not only as a storyteller but also as that warm personality who loved to meet new people.

“He was remarkable in that he made a friend wherever he went,” Jean said. “I feel like we had a rich, full life because we got to know so many people from all over.”

Terry is survived by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Jean; three sons, Greg, Chris and Mike; daughter-in-law Judy; grandchildren Kyle and Sarah; brother Tommy (Nancy); sister Nancy (Tim); and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

It’s easy to have an idea. Turning that idea into something real is another thing entirely.

Andy Tran has had an idea for Millebot, a large-scale 3D printing company, for some time now.

He found himself unsatisfied with traditional manufacturing techniques after graduating from the University of Central Florida with engineering knowledge and a degree in business and marketing nearly a decade ago.

Although he was initially impressed with 3D printing, he found the printers were often too small for his needs. He founded Winter Park-based Millebot in 2016 to supply a large-scale printing platform for construction, aerospace engineering, material sciences and other industries.

Tran will get the chance to share his company’s product to others during the 11th annual SXSW Pitch competition from March 9 to 10 in Austin, Texas.

The SXSW competition is fierce — there will 50 different technology companies pitching their unique designs and innovations to a live audience and panel of expert judges in the hopes of being recognized and possibly securing funding.

Luckily, Tran will be pitching a big project of his own — the MilleHDX-Series Large 3D Printer Platform, which is built to handle 3D industrial-printing needs.

Tran will give a one-minute pitch to judges and, if all goes well, then will deliver a longer pitch on the competition’s main stage later in the weekend.

“Not only do we have a physical product, it’s a big product,” Tran said. “There’s the quote, ‘Be so good they can’t ignore you.’ Ours is ‘Be so big they can’t ignore you.’

You literally can’t walk by without taking a second glance.”

SIZE ADVANTAGE

There’s a large, unmistakable feature Tran believes makes his 3D printer stand out — the

receptacle in which it is contained. The Millebot — short for Modular Integrated Local Logistics Engine — is housed in a 20-foot-by-8.5-foot-by-8-foot foot shipping container.

It’s all for a greater emphasis on adaptability. Tran designed his container/printer hybrid to be as accessible as possible for interested parties who may not have the infrastructure to manufacture materials of their own.

The printer itself — called ‘Mille’ for short by staff — is mounted to the container’s ceiling and supported by brackets and rails.

“The container is really in a ‘Goldilocks Zone,’” Tran said.

“There are always going to be smaller machines, and there’s always going to be bigger machines. But the shipping container is the universally adopted size of 20-foot, 40-foot and even 50-foot systems. … All the roads from around the world, ships, trucks, trains — they’re designed to use this box. It makes economies move.”

Another focus for the Millebot printer is the three-access platform that can integrate existing toolheads for different industries. Tran said an engineer can make aerospace or engineer ingparts out of plastics while an architectural figure can use a different toolhead to print with cement, mortar or clay.

The Millebot company also will have a booth at the SXSW Spotlight area where Tran and other staff will be speaking to some of the event’s many visitors.

As I grew, I realized some of the things I worked on could make an impact and I could learn more about myself in the process. … To me, building Millebot is an enlightening process.

Project draws ire of local residents CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

5, Winter Park Planning and Zoning Board meeting — a response to a 30,000-square-foot office building proposed by V3 Capital Group LLC along Gay Road.

The two-story office building that went before the board would sit on a cluster of four lots — two of which would be rezoned from residential (R-3) to office (O-2) to match the other two lots — and would include a 104-space parking lot.

The residents’ concerns focused primarily on the parking lot, because it would connect Gay Road and Trovillion Avenue to the south.

Residents feared the configuration would create an unwanted route for more cut-through traffic within the residential area as drivers try to avoid the intersection of Lee Road and U.S. 17-92.

“The main thing is the traffic problem — that is ultimate,” resident Doug White said. “As the zoning board probably knows, there are 31 single-family homes being built on Country Club Drive as we speak. That’s going to be a huge impact for single-family homes. The neighborhood of existing single-family homes has chosen to come down here and voice our opposition to any large building going up there that will increase traffic.

“The traffic problem is a thing” he said. “I don’t think an office building is what needs to go there.

Resident Stephanie Barnes took issue with the general size of the building, as well.

“We do not want out-of-control development — we want thoughtful and reasonable development,” Barnes said. “Please do not ruin Winter Park as they have ruined Maitland. You’ve seen the result of that. A 30,000-square-foot building does not belong in that area.”

Despite concerns from residents, Winter Park Senior Planner Allison McGillis told the board the city’s codes actually allow for a project of much more density at the site and that the proposed office building overall would be much smaller.

“In terms of traffic numbers, the applicant has submitted a traffic analysis and stated there will be

302 net new daily trips from this project versus what’s currently there, which are two single-family homes,” McGillis said. “They stated that the traffic is not expected to adversely impact the current traffic operations. When comparing what could be built on this property versus what is proposed, the added trips are minimal, because the office development of 30,000 square feet is significantly less than what could be built under the existing R-3 and O-2 zoning destinations. The R-3 zoning portion of the sight could yield 22 residential unites with a maximum building size of over 60,000 square feet, and the O-2 portion of the site could yield up to 8,000 square feet of office. Combined, that is over double the 30,000 square feet that the applicant is proposing.”

McGillis also said the connec-

tion from Trovillion Avenue to Gay Road through the parking lot could be helpful. It would allow residents along Trovillion to travel north and use the traffic light at Gay to head north onto 17-92, because it is difficult to turn left onto the major road from Trovillion.

Board member Bob Hahn sympathized with residents’ concerns and said the project didn’t seem like the right fit for the area.

“It’s a very, very viable, vital neighborhood adjacent to a very heavy commercial corridor,” Hahn said. “I don’t particularly see an office use in that particular location. I’m not in support of this — I definitely echo the concerns of the neighbors on that.”

Board member Ross Johnston also noted the area is only going to get worse as development continues in the surrounding area.

“This area needs a deeper indepth traffic study — not just a study; it needs to be re-thought,” Johnston said. “There’s something that needs to happen. We all know it. This is a particular cut-through that is manipulated all day long by people who know how to do it. This parking lot will have 10 times as many cars that are cutting through than are actually parking there.”

Ultimately, the board concluded the project meets code and is a better alternative than what could be built there. The agenda item was approved by a vote of 6-1, with Hahn dissenting.

THAN LIFE Jonas Never, a renowned Los Angeles-based muralist, recently completed three murals for the Floyd’s 99 Barbershop locations in Winter Park and on Mills Avenue.

he next time you drive past Floyd’s 99 Barbershop in Winter Park, keep an eye out for Mr. Fred Rogers and his signature smile — or for Bob Ross and his happy little trees.

Although Rogers and Ross are no longer here, their spirit lives on in the films and shows they hosted that stole the hearts of millions growing up. And now, their spirit also lives on in the form of two murals on the sides of Floyd’s.

Jonas Never, a Los Angeles-based artist who has created more than 65 murals in Southern California, has been in Orlando since Feb. 25 to paint three murals for two Floyd’s locations on Mills Avenue and in Winter Park.

Floyd’s 99 Barbershop has been described as the old-school barbershop concept, but with a trendy, modernday twist. The nostalgic barbershop experience is mixed with the appeal of on-trend cuts in a high-energy environment.

Former MLB pitcher Kyle Sleeth and his wife, Sarah, own six Floyd’s 99 locations — with another three soon to come — in Central Florida. Through Floyd’s corporate connections, who have commissioned Never to paint murals at many other Floyd’s locations throughout the country, they were able to bring Never to Orlando to share his artistic abilities.

“Growing up in Los Angeles, especially the west side around Venice, it had such a big skateboarding and graffiti thing,” Never said. “Before street art was even a phrase it was a thing out there. It’s great, because it’s sunny all year-round and you can paint all year-round.”

Never, a former baseball-playerturned artist, majored in art at the University of California Riverside, where he discovered his future as an artist.

After college, he dabbled in graffiti before transitioning to nostalgic paintings and murals, especially of pinup girls and old cars. One of Floyd’s 99’s founding owners, Bill O’Brien, discovered Never’s work at a gallery show.

LAY OF THE LAND: THE ART OF FLORIDA’S CATTLE CULTURE On display through Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Garden, 633 Osceola Ave, Winter Park.

This exhibition will feature art and objects representing the culture of Florida’s 500-year cattle industry. A broad range of items will be exhibited, from handmade functional objects such as saddles, whips, chaps and spurs to fine art photography, sketches, paintings and sculpture. The exhibition will convey the excitement of the rodeo and cattle drive, the unspoiled beauty of Florida’s native scrub and working landscape, and a culture completely unique to our state. Objects and art on loan come from members of the Cowboy Artist’s Association of Florida, Cowboy “craftsmen” from around the state, private collections and the Seminole Tribe.

This exhibition is presented by the Florida Cattlemen’s Foundation, with additional support from the Florida Humanities Council.

Size matters

When the Sleeths brought Never out to work on the murals at their Mills Avenue and Winter Park locations, they knew they wanted something that was recognizable but also something that would reflect the fabric and history of their neighborhoods.

“We were looking at local celebrities and heroes, so to speak, and I went and saw the (Mr. Rogers) movie with my mom and just kind of had an epiphany,” Sarah Sleeth said. “I remembered that Fred Rogers went to Rollins and that he had a home here. We wanted to (have) like a ‘Welcome to Winter Park’ kind of feeling, like ‘Won’t you be my neighbor? Come join us in Winter Park’ sort of thing, so that was where we came up with the whole idea.”

For the Mills Avenue location, the Sleeths and Never decided on an image of Freddie Mercury, who is depicted with his hand raised in the air and a look of triumph on his face. It was described as an ode to the neighborhood’s LGBT community.

Additionally, they decided on a mural of Bob Ross to grace the wall facing Fairbanks Avenue at the Winter Park location.

“Some areas you paint with broad strokes, but with areas like Winter Park and Orlando, you can play off celebrities that lived here, like Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers,” Never said. “You can do something that fits with the area. Freddie Mercury felt like he fit the vibe on Mills. If you can embody an area, people run with it. “(And) even though (Rogers) lived here and went to Rollins, some locals aren’t familiar with the fact that he actually went there,” he said. “If a city like this has those kind of stories they should be told, and art’s an immediate way to tell those stories.”

THE IMPACT

For Never, getting to work with a company such as Floyd’s has been a great opportunity for partnership, practice and exposure.

“Floyd’s has been an amazing company to work for from the top down,” he said. “Franchisees (such as) Kyle and Sarah Sleeth are really great, and it’s great working with people who have the same vision as you.”

Perhaps the best part of the art he does is the interactions it sparks with passersby. While working on his mural of Rogers, people stopped to compliment Never on his artistry or comment on the iconic role Rogers continues to play in the lives of many.

“We’ve had a ton of great feedback, and it’s been put on a lot of social media,” Kyle Sleeth said. “To see people talk about it, everyone says, ‘I’ve got to come out and take a picture with it,’ which brings interest to the business.

That was the whole purpose of it.”

And as long as his art elicits reactions from people and continues to act as a conduit for meeting new people and sharing knowledge, Never knows he has done his job.

“Art is whatever people make it, and public art takes it even further,” he said.

“When the public interacts, it reaffirms you made the right choice in the mural and it’s succeeding. Getting that sort of interaction and making it more authentic is so much more fun.”

they were going for with their new barbershop they were opening on Santa Monica Boulevard,” Never said. “He asked me to paint a wall there. This was 2006. I did that not really expecting to get paid, just doing it for fun and exposure, and then he and his brother were talking about how they were going to open like 10 more shops that year.”

From there, the partnership blossomed. Never has painted murals at various Floyd’s locations in the 13 years since then. He also does work for Bowlero bowling alleys, sports teams in Los Angeles, Adidas, Red Bull, Delta and various bars and restaurants.

For his murals, Never starts off by taking a photo of a wall, measuring it and digitally placing the images he wants to emulate onto it. During this step, he ensures the parts of the painting won’t be over a drainpipe or window and that everything fits and is cropped appropriately. Then, the painting begins.

“I normally work with spray paint for the skin tones and clothing, and house paint for the fine details,” he said. “I don’t want teeth or eyes to look blurry or foggy, and I‘ll use brush paint for that.”

Large cityscapes can take up to months to complete, while the Freddie Mercury and Rogers murals took about three days and four days, respectively.
