for hiking and horseback riding, but the county plans to revamp the park with several amenities for which the community has expressed desire, Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey said.

“The county has owned that piece of property and has intended it for a park for a very long time, but we just recently started to jell around a particular vision for the park,” VanderLey said. “We just signed a contract with a master planner to help us envision what’s going to go in the park, how it’s going to fit in, how it’s to be laid out, and figure out who our publicprivate partnerships might be.”

VanderLey has collected ideas from the public regarding amenities the park could have, but no amenities have been decided on yet, she said. The multi-step process for the park’s designs has only recently begun, and the county wants to ensure it is able to build a world-class park, she said.

“I’ve heard a lot of ideas: aquatics, tennis courts, folks want to make sure that the trails out there connect into the park,” she said. “There’s a need for a venue out there for Rotary Club meetings and weddings.

There’s a need for a nice public building in that area because there’s nothing out there right now. Some of the folks have talked about a concert venue and how neat that would be.

There are a lot of ideas float-

ing out there, and there will be more public meetings held to gain further input from the residents. After that, we’ll decide what reasonably fits in there and what can coexist well on the property, how we’re going to fund it and where the money could come from.”

Orange County has several million dollars earmarked for the park, but VanderLey aims to establish a 501(c)(3) organization to help raise money, set up public-private partnerships and possibly obtain Tourism Development Tax dollars, she said.

“A lot of really large parks like this — world-class parks — like New York Central Park, often will form its own 501(c)(3) to build and operate the park,” she said. “This will take far more than the taxpayer dollars that are currently available.

So instead of diverting all the park monies to this park and not being able to do things in other areas, my vision is that we would do this 501(c)(3) standalone, which would then be able to go out and write agreements, do capital campaigns to raise the money, and all that.”

The park originally was purchased cooperatively with monies from the Environmental Protection Agency, which relinquished its rights to the park’s property a month ago, VanderLey said. Owning the full rights allows the county to get its ambitious plans for the park done without needing federal government approval,

which would require a long process, she said.

“There will be a lot of public input, and ultimately, it will be a decision made by the parks department, Orange County and perhaps stakeholders,” VanderLey said. “For instance, if one of the big corporations came to the table and said we’d like to see this particular amenity in this park, and we’d be willing to come up with this much money — obviously that would be something we would take into consideration, as well.

So, it’s about what the community wants, what can be realized here, what we have funding for and what we can get with some partnerships in place — all of those things will ultimately define what this looks like.”

The timeline for the park’s construction depends on funding, and a cost estimate for the park is not yet known because the park is only in its preliminary planning phases, VanderLey said.

“Depending on how successful we are with the capital campaigns, that will determine how quickly the park gets built,” she said. “If we’re very successful, perhaps we can build it all at the same time. If not, we’ll look at how to phase this in over time according to the most acute need for the community. But this is (in the) very early days — we are just now starting to put this together and just hired the master planner and given them notice to proceed.”

rtists and art lovers packed the streets of downtown Windermere March 2 and March 3 for the fourth annual Windermere Fine Art show.

This year’s show featured the works of 100 artists, from jewelers and metal and glass workers to painters, sculptors and photographers. In addition to selling and displaying their work, participating artists competed for honors.

Carey Sheffield won Best of Show; Terry Mamounas won first place; Helen Avalon was awarded second place; third place went to Ward Sieglar; and three honorable mentions were given to Paul La Montagne, Todd Fox and Orlando Penalza.

Other artists were recognized for awards. Colleen Ardaman was recognized as “Most Colorful Artist,” and Jose Pereira was recognized as “Most Creative Artist.” Andre LaSalle was recognized as “Most Original Artist.”

Laurel Hankins was recognized as “Most Promising Artist,” and Loren Berry was recognized as “Most Supportive Artist.” William Doak was selected as the “Featured Artist” for the 2020 Windermere Fine Art Show.

People and pups, grab your leashes: It’s almost time to trek over to Windermere for a day of petfriendly fun.

The third annual Windermere PetFest takes place Saturday, March 9, in downtown Windermere. Designed to bring out the pet lover in everyone and offer a fun day out with your best fourlegged friend, PetFest is sponsored by the Animal Clinic of Windermere and hosted by the Windermere Parks and Recreation committee.

The inaugural event in 2017 drew between 1,000 and 1,500 attendees, estimated Parks and Recreation Chair Nora Brophy.

Last year, the estimated attendance was about 3,000, she said, and it continues to grow each year.

“The Animal Clinic of Windermere originally brought the idea to us and said they would love to sponsor a pet event,” Brophy said.

“The committee talked about it and thought it sounded like a great idea; I’m a pet lover myself.

We decided to go ahead with it and got started doing it. The first year was much smaller, but it’s grown a lot. It’s a really fun event.”

Brophy said there will be about 60 vendors at this year’s event, as well as five rescue groups, including Candy’s Cats, mastiff and greyhound rescues and The Pixel Fund. Vendors include dog trainers, groomers and crafters who sell pet clothing and collars.

New this year is a raffle, in which PetFest attendees can buy raffle tickets and enter to win various prizes from the vendors.

There will be a dog bowl at each booth, Brophy said, and guests can choose items for which they want to enter.

“The idea was brought up to me by one of our vendors, so every vendor will have something to raffle off, and they’re all very different,” she said. “Each one will raffle off something … (guests) can see what every vendor is raffling off. We will distribute the profits from the raffle to the rescue groups that are there. We have five rescue groups there this year and will split the profits and give it back to the rescue groups.”

The Parks and Recreation committee is going to distribute free bandannas for pets, and police officers from Ocoee and Winter Garden will provide K-9 demonstrations throughout the day.

Dogs and their people can try a small agility course in the Doggie Fun Zone, take photos in the Animal Clinic of Windermere’s “Magic Mirror Photo Booth,” enjoy live music and grab a bite to eat at one of the food trucks on hand.

time. Dogs really seem to enjoy the Doggie Fun Zone and games — they like being the center of attention. If you don’t have a dog, it’s fun, because there are so many vendors that have great products, and you can watch all the dogs. … I just enjoy watching all the people and their dogs have a good time.”

Whether you plan to bring your furry best friend or just go to enjoy the pets and their people, PetFest is a fun experience for any pet lover, Brophy said.

“Windermere is a wonderful town to live in, and it’s a really pet-friendly town,” she said. “It’s a really fun event for our residents and people in the area. For the Parks and Recreation committee, our mandate is to make our parks fun and functional. We like to put on events that are enjoyable for people.”

A

bigaelle Caillot keeps a busy schedule. The high-school senior is in the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet program at Dr. Phillips High and cheers for the DPHS Panthers, and she spends time at the Levy Hughes Club, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida branch in the Parramore area of Orlando, where she lives.

This club has been her home away from home since she was 12, a place she felt safe, a place she felt she could freely share her feelings after a tragic accident killed her father when she was 10.

It also has been a place of growth for Abigaelle, now 18 — and for her perseverance and resilience, she has been named the 2019 Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida Youth of the Year. She now will participate in the state competition in April.

The program is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Orlando Foundation.

Abigaelle and three of her cousins were on their way to a summer camp event. Her father, Gabriel Caillot, was behind the wheel, and one of the cousins, 11-year-old Gaeton Valceus, was in the passenger seat beside him.

Abigaelle said she remembers getting ready at her grandmother’s house and then sitting in the back seat of the car between two other cousins — but the next thing she recalls is lying in a hospital bed, fully conscious, about a week later, with a broken left femur and a broken right knee and ankle.

“So, basically, I was handi-

capped,” she said. “I tried to move my legs, and they wouldn’t move where I wanted them to move.”

Reports say her father lost control of his car and was struck by an SUV. The impact of the crash killed Gaeton instantly; her father died at the scene, as well. The other two cousins were seriously injured, too.

Intense and painful rehabilitation became a priority to get Abigaelle on her feet again and, after several months, back to school.

“Rehab was really tough,” she said. “I had to relearn how to walk.

It was painful, and I wanted to stop, but I didn’t let that stop me from doing what I intended to do.”

HEALING THE HEART

After her rehab sessions were finished, Abigaelle joined the Boys & Girls Clubs. She became close to one counselor, Leeann Noel, who was there to dispense hugs and advice and offering a listening ear. Two years later, Noel left for another job, but the two have maintained their relationship.

“She has been someone I can talk to openly,” Abigaelle said. “If it’s just you, yourself, handling everything, it’s just too much.

Yeah, you have best friends and such, but you need someone who has gone through what you have gone through, or something similar.”

Noel has been an important

mentor and role model in Abigaelle’s life. After her father died, she experienced anxiety whenever anyone tried to get close to her, but it always was different when the two were together.

“I have high expectations of myself, and when I don’t meet those … I’m more hard on myself than anyone else,” she said. “But she says, ‘It’s a minor setback.

What are you going to do to get to where you need to be?’”

Giving up was not an option.

Abigaelle had to push hard, not just for herself, but for her mother, Rachelle Caillot, too.

To further heal her body, she played flag football her freshman year and joined the DP cheerleading squad in her sophomore year.

“It was like another physical therapy for me to build up my strength,” she said. “It helped when I thought I couldn’t do things. There were times I wanted to quit. The coach said, ‘You’re going to keep practicing ’til you get it.’”

IN THE COMPETITION

Abigaelle learned in December she was in the running for the title of Youth of the Year for all she had overcome. The next month, she was practicing her speech and interview to prepare her for the actual competition in February.

It wasn’t easy talking about her father’s death, and she was ner-

vous and anxious, she said.

“My youth director said, ‘No one can tell your story better than you,’ and then I calmed down,” she said. “I can share my story and tell people where I was and how I came to where I am.”

The competition recognizes club members who represent the organization’s three priorities: academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

An awards ceremony was held last month at the Orlando Museum of Art, and Abigaelle was named Youth of the Year. She was selected from four finalists out of the more than 3,500 teenagers served by the Boys & Girls Clubs. The win comes with a $5,000 scholarship to the college of her choice.

“It’s, like, surreal,” she said.

“It’s shocking in a way because, wow, my story means something to somebody else. Myself, I don’t feel like my story is that big, but, again, it can help people who have been where I have been and been through what I went through.

Your situation doesn’t define who you are.”

FUTURE PLANS

It was during her physical therapy sessions that Abigaelle decided she wanted to focus on a career that helps others. She hopes to attend Howard University, in Washington, D.C., and become a nurse practitioner or neonatal nurse.

She ultimately would like to open her own practice and possibly provide healthcare in underserved countries.

She has residual pain, but it is manageable; she has discovered her true strength through this second chance at life.

Wildlife on Reams CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

tified state master naturalist and environmental consultant Don Kendzior, began monitoring these rates in 2015 after Horizon West residents and Disney cast members who regularly commute on Reams began reporting wildlife being struck and killed in the vicinity of the existing pipe culvert on Reams, Kendzior said.

The reports caught Kendzior’s attention, because water levels in the conservation areas north of Reams Road were observed to be regularly above seasonal norms at the time, and Kendzior doubted it was a coincidence.

Orange County officials said it does not track wildlife mortality rates, but the nonprofit’s ongoing monitoring efforts have revealed that about 400 animals have been killed from 2015 to 2018 on that stretch of Reams Road near the existing pipe culvert. Half of those deaths occurred in the area between Greenbank Boulevard and Peachtree Park Court, he said.

From January to February of this year, 11 animals have been struck and killed — a rate of one animal every 3.4 days, Kendzior said. To date, he has documented 16 species of wildlife that have been killed on Reams. Some animals have been too mutilated from vehicle impacts to be recognizable, he said.

“Entire families of animals, like otters, have been killed, and this mortality rate is unsustainable for (the) area’s wildlife populations,” he said. “One endangered species — a gopher tortoise — and

one threatened species — a pair of sandhill cranes — were killed last year.”

Kendzior believes such statistics are alarming and unsustainable, and that more should be done to mitigate the issue.

According to a report emailed to Orange County summarizing the data, his nonprofit requested that immediate action be taken while the county works on its Reams Road widening project. “(Because) there has been no significant decrease in wildlife mortality and minimal action was taken in 2018, we have asked the county to present a list of additional actions that may be implemented in the interim before adequate wildlife-crossing infrastructure is in place with the new roadway in 2025,” he said.

Some suggestions Kendzior proposed in the report included reducing the speed limit to 35 mph from the Church of Latter-day Saints to New Market Drive; cutting back the vegetation about 20 feet away from the roadway in areas of moderate and high wildlife mortality; installing a fence north of Reams Road at the existing pipe culvert; constructing a temporary or permanent wildlife crossing beneath Reams Road at the pipe culvert; adding solar digital warning signs to remind drivers to slow down and using speed trailers and Orange County deputies more regularly.

to Kendzior’s observations and concerns, said Diana Dethlefs, aide to Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey. VanderLey emphasized that she does not support any suggested actions that only would provide temporary solutions while resulting in a construction delay of the coming improvements for Reams Road. She would rather implement a permanent solution to the issue, she said.

“I’ve made it clear to Mr. Kendzior that I’m unwilling to do anything that would either detract from the budget of the permanent fix or slow down the permanent fix,” VanderLey said. “But we’re willing to look at actions we could possibly take that would mitigate without hitting the budget or incurring delays for the permanent fix.

“Ultimately, the problem needs the permanent fix, which is the roadway widening, the sidewalks on the roadway and the culvert

underneath the road for animals to be able to migrate,” she said.

VanderLey added that while the roadway design was underway, the county has taken a number of measures in response to the nonprofit’s concerns. It has reduced the speed limit on Reams; increased law-enforcement presence in the area; installed flashing wildlifecrossing signs; temporarily placed speed trailers; contacted Disney to request it make its employees aware of the wildlife issues and challenges with the roadway; and included wildlife corridors underneath the road in the design for the future roadway.

But VanderLey noted that even the wildlife corridors might not result in a complete solution, because it depends on the animals’ behavior as well.

“We’re going to provide a culvert for the animals when we improve the road, but we have no way of making sure the animals use that,” she said.

Town of Windermere residents will have a chance to choose three representatives for the Town Council at the March 12 municipal election.

Three of the Town Council’s five seats are up for election, as well as the role of mayor, because Windermere Town Mayor Gary Bruhn has announced his pending resignation from public office.

Windermere Town Council Member and Mayor-elect Jim O’Brien is running unopposed for town mayor, while six candidates are vying for the three seats. The six candidates are Liz Andert, Mike Hargreaves, Bill Martini, Dina Pryor and incumbents Bob McKinley and Richard Montgomery.

Andert, a six-year Windermere resident from Minnesota with a background in communications and marketing, decided to run because she wants to give back to the community.

Hargreaves, a three-year town resident who owns a security company, decided to run to help find a solution to Windermere’s cut-through traffic and speeding issues.

Martini, a 22-year town resident employed as a finance specialist for the state of Florida and a Realtor, said safety and better town facilities would be his top priorities in office.

McKinley – a 10-year resident with 45 years of management

experience – has served on the Town Council for four years. And Incumbent Montgomery said his priority if re-elected would be to have the town’s five-year Capital Improvement Plan re-evaluated.

Windermere residents also will have the opportunity to vote on whether to allow the town of Windermere to borrow up to $5.2 million for the construction of safer and more modern buildings to house the town’s police officers and town administration personnel.

The debt will be required to be paid off within 30 years, and property taxes will not be increased for the sole purpose of paying off the debt.

The early voting period began 8 a.m., Monday, March 4, and ends 5 p.m., Friday, March 8. Registered voters can participate in early voting by bringing the required identification to their polling locations.

Ocoee residents may vote at the Jim Beech Recreation Center located at 1820 A.D. Mims Road.

If necessary, run-off elections will be held Tuesday, April 9.

Scouts earn Eagle rank through projects benefiting Dave’s House The Morton brothers of Dr. Phillips each earned the rank through projects at Dave’s House, an organization that serves individuals with serious mental illnesses.

A pair of brothers from Dr. Phillips recently celebrated achieving one of the highest advancement ranks in Boy Scouts.

Stephen Morton, 17, and his brother, 15-year-old Bryan, both achieved the rank of Eagle Scout through projects they completed to benefit Dave’s House, an organization that provides permanent supportive housing to individuals with serious mental illness and co-occurring disabilities. Both projects are kept at a facility of a partner organization, Aspire Health Partners’ Kate’s Place.

“At first, I didn’t feel like much had changed, because I still felt like it was me — I just got the Eagle Scout award,” Bryan Morton said.

“After some time and letting it sink in, I really felt amazed and proud of my accomplishments.”

The Morton brothers each have been in the Boy Scouts — which recently changed its name to Scouts BSA — since the first grade and are members of Troop 225. They also are the third generation in their family to support Dave’s House. Their grandparents, Mary and Steve Holloway, along with parents, Wendy and Rob Morton, have been longtime

supporters of the organization.

“My parents were friends with the founders before they started this organization,” Wendy Morton said. “We’ve kind of been on board since the beginning.”

Stephen Morton is a senior

at Dr. Phillips High School and part of the Center for International Studies Magnet Program.

His Eagle Scout project took 140 volunteer hours, and he raised $1,560. With that money, he was able to purchase T:10”and donate to

Dave’s House 20 three-month supply toiletry bags, a 43-inch smart TV with wall mount and a PlayStation 4 console along with five video games, controllers and five board games. After expenses, he was able to donate the remain-

ing $500 to Dave’s House.

“My project helped me build my leadership and fundraising skills,” Stephen said. “I wanted to do a project that would continue to benefit people for years and help them enjoy life a little more whenever they visit Kate’s Place.”

Wendy Morton added that Stephen’s project focused on social interaction for the clients of Dave’s House.

Bryan Morton is a sophomore at DPHS and part of the Television Production and Digital Video Production Magnet Program.

In his project, he built gardening beds for Dave’s House clients to grow fresh produce. The plants are protected with chicken wire wrapped around PVC pipes. His project took 131 volunteer hours, and he raised $1,136. After project expenses, he was able to donate $300 to Dave’s House.

“I built two raised-garden beds that are protected from pests like raccoons and other large pests,” Bryan Morton said. “Dave’s House can use (the garden beds) to grow new items of food … and also (provides) for them to have a (relaxing outlet) through gardening.”

One of the requirements of attaining the rank of Eagle Scouts is that a scout must earn at least 21 merit badges. The Morton brothers each had more than that when they became Eagle Scouts.

Bryan had 31 merit badges by the time he became an Eagle Scout, and Stephen had more than 40.

“You only need 21 merit badges to get Eagle, so they were above and beyond what they needed for Eagle rank,” Wendy Morton said.

“Rai$e Your Voice is a concert to support our (chorus) program in song,” Chorus Director Linda Boot said. “(Because) we sing, we wanted to — instead of selling candles or cookie dough — do something that supports our students through the magic of singing and music. … We’re hoping to make this an annual event.”

Rai$e Your Voice will feature performances by all four of the different chorus groups at Windermere High as well as other performers. In addition to the chorus department, funds raised also will go toward costs associated with sending 44 chorus students to New York City after the school was invited to sing at Carnegie Hall as part of the Choirs of America festival, Boot said.

“It’s such an amazing opportunity to sing in Carnegie Hall and on my first trip to New York City,” said senior chorus student Abigail Brannon. “I’m so proud of our choir and truly blessed to be a part of this special experience.”

The concert headliner will be internationally acclaimed a capella group, Voctave, the members of which recently were named Artists of Residency at Rollins College. The Central Florida-based, 11-member group was formed in 2015, and many of the members can trace their professional roots to Walt Disney World. Their

The other performers at “Rai$e Your Voice” will be Grant Norman, who played the Phantom in “Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway; Christine Sivrich, who was in “Grease” and the “Wedding Singer” on Broadway; and Jukebox 4, a national group of performers known for their harmonies and playful choreography.

Billy Flanigan, a longtime performer and iconic host at Walt Disney World for more than 35 years, is the host and also will be singing a song at Rai$e Your Voice.

Flanigan’s entertainment career in Central Florida dates back to 1982.

When he’s not hosting shows or entertaining guests at Disney World, he is active throughout many different theater and performance communities in Orange

County. He previously has done shows with the Garden Theatre, the Mad Cow Theatre and The Abbey in Orlando, He also hosts an open-mic nightat 7 p.m. Thursdays at Pilars Martini in downtown Winter Garden. He helped recruit some of the performers for Rai$e Your Voice, he said.

“I love to give back to the community,” Flanigan said. “I love to volunteer my time and talents. I have a wealth of friends who are so talented, and I love to help put on shows. When she (Boot) had asked if I would host (Rai$e Your Voice), I jumped on it.”

Another goal of “Rai$e Your Voice” is to help establish a fan base for the Windermere High chorus among the school’s surrounding communities, Boot said.

“We have amazing students who are so talented, and we would just like the community to know (that) and to come out to support these students and also to help support the department,” Boot said.

ore than 100 Windermere residents, town staff and the police foundation gave their time and worked together Saturday, Feb. 23, during the town’s Build a Bed event. Volunteers partnered with staff from nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace to help build bunk beds for children in need who don’t have beds of their own. Everyone participating helped by cutting and drilling wood, soaking it in a special stain, branding the wood and loading the finished pieces up. In total, their teamwork resulted in 43 built beds.

s the Dr. Phillips Magic softball team takes the field, a sigh of relief comes from coach Lee Liddick.

Even though Dr. Phillips Little League officially kicked off its spring baseball and softball season Feb. 23, a late cancellation last Saturday kept his Magic team off the field until Monday, March 4.

But as the old saying goes, it’s better late than never, and Liddick is happy to finally get his players some time on the diamond while taking a break from the hectic schedule he has kept the last few weeks.

“It’s a whirlwind — taking care of everything, being in charge and managing is very difficult sometimes,” said Liddick, who also acts as the president of softball and registration lead. “The last two weeks was nothing but scheduling — I couldn’t focus on the team — but luckily, I have good assistant coaches who can help pick up the slack. It’s been a whirlwind, but I’m glad that it’s here.”

With the clock quickly ticking away on Windermere’s season, the Wolverines did what they have done all year — they found a way to win.

With just under eight seconds to go and a state Final Four spot on the line, Trey Moss found Josh Colon in the left corner for an open shot that sunk the bottom of the net to give the Wolverines the 59-57 lead.

What happened next was a frantic defensive stop that saw a shot from Wharton (26-5) hang on the rim before rolling off as time expired.

“The thing we talked about was, ‘The only way we can lose is if they hit a three, so don’t give up a three,’” head coach Mark Griseck said. “We had two guys run at a three-point shooter and run him off the line; he drove it and just missed it. We had a little luck go our way again.”

The final buzzer sounded, and a split second later, students rushed the floor to celebrate the monumental win alongside their team.

It was a moment senior guard Carter Zavada will never forget.

“I was telling one of my teammates that it was the best feeling I think I’ve ever felt — not even from a basketball standpoint, but just the rush and the excitement and the joy that I experienced and everyone experienced in that gym,” Zavada said. “The fans started storming the court early — even though there was like, five seconds left in the game — but you could just tell that the atmosphere was booming that night.”

For fellow senior captain Dakota Rivers, that last 10 seconds felt like they took years off his life. It was an intensity he had not felt before.

Rally falls short for TFA in 5-3 loss

T

he First Academy suffered its first loss of the young season in a 5-3 defeat to the hands of a plucky Legacy Charter team Thursday, Feb. 28.

Despite a tough start to the game for TFA (1-1), the Royals had hope late in the game as they rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but unfortunately the effort fell just short.

The Royals would rebound in back-to-back wins over Crescent City and Mount Dora.

As a member of the Olympia softball team, Caryssa Orland has become a leader for the Titans during her high-school career. Before looking forward to playing Division I ball at Florida Atlantic University next year, Orland is hoping to make her senior year her best one yet as she takes on multiple roles as a shortstop/pitcher/outfielder for the Titans.

When did you first start playing softball?

I was 8 years old, and I loved this sport. My sister played, so I wanted to play, because it looked like it was really fun and competitive.

Through your four years of softball at Olympia, what has been your favorite part?

My favorite thing is working with new girls every year, trying to make them and the program better, and just learning different aspects of the game.

What has been the biggest challenge playing high-school softball?

Because it’s different from travel ball, probably playing with a different group of girls — travel ball and high school are way different. It (high-school softball) is not as competitive, I guess.

How long have you been playing for the Florida Storm?

I had started with the Orlando Aftershock — that’s when I first started, when I was 8 — and then we changed our name to a different organization, so I’ve been playing 10 years on the same team.

What motivates you to play this sport?

Probably just watching college softball — I’m always watching it, and it makes me more motivated to get to the next level.

What is some of the best advice you’ve been given?

I would say to never give up and follow your dreams, because you never know where it’s going to take you.

that’s what I got recruited for. I like playing centerfield, because you get to the read the ball more and you get to dive. … I feel like more balls are hit out there, so you get more action.

It’s actually good, because we both like each other and we don’t argue that much. We just help each other improve and cheer each other on.

“I couldn’t even believe it — it was to a point where I couldn’t even breathe,” Rivers said. “Just being able to play in that atmosphere and know it was the biggest game of our lives — it was just crazy.

I couldn’t even hear, because there was so much screaming, and I didn’t even know what was going on.”

That game on Friday night — during which Dante Love picked up 21 points and Trey Moss grabbed 14 — was just the latest stepping stone for a young program exceeding expectations in the biggest of ways.

After a regular season concluded with a district title over Ocoee, the Wolverines (27-4) have seemingly lived by the words of late NC State head coach Jim Valvano: “Survive and advance.”

The rather simple concept is that a team just needs to put itself in a position to win to stay alive. Griseck has utilized that concept, as well as an old nickname that refers to that national title-winning Wolfpack team.

“I told somebody that we’re the Cardiac Pack, man,” Griseck said. “I watched every one of those games in ’83, so I know all about it. We could have easily lost all three games — we’ve been fortunate and have had some luck go our way.”

What will you miss most about Olympia?

I’ll definitely miss the girls I’ve made relationships with and Bobby (Brewer). He’s actually made me a better player, and he has only been here for a month and a half. He really pushes me to work harder.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I would want to go to a country where there is poverty and help out others — like a mission trip — and stay there for two months.

Although fans of the Wolverines probably were thrilled to not have to deal with another overtime game, Zavada said the prospect of playing extra basketball was one for which the team was ready.

But now, the Wolverines have a new obstacle to climb as they travel to Lakeland to compete in the 8A state semifinal against defending state champion Blanche Ely (23-6) at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 8.

“We have a big challenge coming, and luckily we’ll have some time to prepare,” Griseck said. “We told our guys to

enjoy it this weekend, and then we’re back to practice tomorrow (Monday). We just have to keep getting better.”

Regardless of Friday’s outcome, the progress Griseck and his players have made at Windermere in just two years is incredible. Zavada said it feels like everything is coming together for the young program.

“It’s a confirmation of, ‘This is where I’m supposed to be,” Zavada said. “I think we are doing incredible things, and no one expected us to be here.

It’s just really been us buying into what our coaches have been saying and us buying into our program. For us to be here — it’s just really awesome.”

DP ready to take the field Liddick has been a force in terms of helping to grow the softball wing of Dr. Phillips Little League since taking over, and under his watchful eye the program has gained attention.

Since last spring, the program is up 23 girls and fielding a juniors division team (13-14 years old) for the first time since 2016.

“We gained a bunch of girls — we’ve got 12-13 rostered from minors all the way up — and last year we didn’t have that,” Liddick said. “We had just barely enough

to field a team sometimes to come over here. So what we are doing so far is working, so that’s a good thing.”

Being able to provide a juniors division is huge for the softball program and even bigger for those girls looking to keep playing right up to when they start middle school.

It not only helps build fundamentals for each individual player but also helps set a solid foundation for the program. Before, the league was losing girls to Wind-

ermere Little League — which has had a juniors team.

“It makes me feel good — it makes me feel good for the girls, especially with being able to gain a juniors team,” Liddick said. “As long as the rest of these girls continue to stay with the program, they’re going to have places to go.

“If we couldn’t have fielded a juniors team, we would have had a bunch of girls who either may not have been able to play or they would have come over here and joined Windermere,” he said.

“Which is good — they have a place to go — but it’s always nice to keep them in your own backyard.”

Going into Monday night’s game, Liddick said he had no real expectations for his Magic team so early in the season, especially given that he had one girl returning off of majors, while everybody else (coming off the minors team) is new to the Magic.

There’s a freshness to this year’s team, which is comprised mostly of kids ages 11 to 12, which also comes with some slight anxiousness, said 11-year-old pitcher/ first baseman/catcher Richelle Ruiz. “(I’m) a little bit nervous, but obviously the nerves go away when you’re playing,” said Ruiz, who has played her entire Little League career with DP. “We’re really just here to have fun, so there’s not really nerves going around.”

Ruiz is one of the many new faces to join the Magic and a player Liddick believes will be a difference-maker for his team.

She will lead the way alongside the team’s lone returner, Maille Venne — who starts at catcher for the Magic. The 12-year-old, who has been a part of the DPLL softball program for four years, has most enjoyed the learning process utilized by the organization. “(I get) to learn without having too much pressure on winning or anything,” Venne said.

And that’s the most vital aspect of how Liddick and the other coaches in DPLL approach their respective games. Winning is fun, but at this level of baseball and softball, learning and having fun are the most important things in developing better players and people.

“As the season progresses, it’s fun to watch the girls grow and learn,” Liddick said. “That was one of the really fun things about last year. At the beginning of the year, it didn’t look very promising at all at practices. Then they got into games and started applying the things that we did in practice and looked good — they surprised us. By the end of the year, they were doing things that they needed to do, and that’s always fun to watch at this level.”
