Community Health Centers recognized

Dollar led the Winter Garden department during an era of growth and change.

andy Dollar was hired as the first full-time fire inspector for the city of Winter Garden in 1974, and his job was to search buildings looking for potential fire hazards. He remained in that position for 11 years — all the while rising through the ranks to the fire department’s top position of fire chief in 1994.

The Ocoee resident died Sunday, Feb. 23, at the age of 65.

Dollar was employed by the Winter Garden Fire Rescue Department for 27 years. Working with the department was his passion, second only to his family, said his wife, Glenda Dollar. His daughter, Amanda Williams, recalls him often coming home from work with stories to tell.

In his first 10 years, Randy Dollar — in addition to being a fire inspector — served as a firefighter, lieutenant and captain. He was a division commander for one year before being promoted to assistant chief in 1985, and his tenure as fire chief ran from 1994 until his retirement in 2002.

When Randy Dollar was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1995 at the age of 41, he continued to work as long as he was able.

“He had a very big heart for the people, and it was absolutely devastating to him when he received the MS diagnosis and he (chose) to resign because he couldn’t walk,” Williams said. “He said they needed a whole person and he wasn’t a whole person anymore.”

Glenda Dollar recalls him making the tough decision to retire.

“He was very heartbroken when his health came to the place that he had to go on a walker,” she said.

“He told me one day that he just didn’t feel that it was right for him to keep that position. He said that he had always felt that whatever he asked of the firemen, he himself would do. And he said at that time that he wasn’t able to do that stuff anymore.”

Glenda Dollar said he was disappointed because he had a list of projects he wanted to complete before he left the position.

Matt McGrew, Winter Garden’s current fire chief, recalls his first visit with Randy Dollar about five years ago — and he said he was thrilled to be able to “talk shop” about the fire department. The two stayed in close contact and had many good conversations.

“Every time … he always wanted to tell the next story,” McGrew said.

“He was really proud of his time with the fire department. That’s probably what meant the most to him — the fire department.”

McGrew said Randy Dollar’s legacies are Fire Station No. 24 — built on Palmetto Street while he was chief — and his dedication to safety. He oversaw the transition of the department from a combination of full-time and volunteer firefighters to all full-time employees, as well. His leadership was evident.

McGrew was thrilled after finding a folder — tucked in the back of a file cabinet — that included Randy Dollar’s project wish list and was eager to share the news with him.

“That made his day to find out that much of what (Randy) wanted to see happen, Chief McGrew wanted to see happen,” Glenda Dollar said.

“He’s a thinker, and he had a plan with the department,” McGrew said. “He had the same vision as I do for the fire department. … He was hard-working. He was very methodical. … He knew how to talk to the city officials.”

As the disease progressed, Randy Dollar’s body continued failing.

“Everybody who knew my dad, they would come in and say, ‘That’s the smile, the million-dollar smile,’” Williams said. “He was the greatest. Everybody thinks their daddy is the best, but God bless him, he’s my hero.”

The week before her father died, Williams filled a shadowbox with all of his WGFRD badges and presented it to him.

Another prized possession was a scrapbook of photos and newspaper clippings put together by a niece.

“Every time he went out on a call, you said a little prayer that he would be safe,” Glenda Dollar said.

He returned home from his shifts with some emotional stories. When their children were young, Randy Dollar was called to a fire involving a mother and young child living in a recreational vehicle.

“He just came home and hugged his children,” she said. “It hurt him to go somewhere where a child had been hurt in a fire. … That was just his calling in life. That was Randy.

He was a helper.”

Battalion Chief Brian Sanders was a young volunteer firefighter when he met Randy Dollar in 1987.

He recalled his gentle but authoritative demeanor.

“He was always pleasant and always kind, and then when it came

time to be more of an administrator or put his foot down, he did,” Sanders said. “That’s what I liked about him.”

One memory will always resonate with Sanders — how professionally and respectfully Randy Dollar handled the aftermath of the deadly tornado that hit the city in 1998.

“I want to mimic that style,” he said.

After the chief had retired and was confined to his house, members of the fire department drove the brand-new tower truck, not yet in service, to the Dollar home.

“We knew he couldn’t come to the fire station to see it,” Sanders said. “He was blown away that we did that. … We knew how much that was going to mean to him. …

That was just one small thing we could do for all the things he had done for us and the fire station.

“He cared about the Winter Garden Fire Department tremendously,” he said. “It’s your family.”

Randy Dollar was born in Winter Garden, Florida, in 1954 and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1972. He married the former Glenda Brimer, of Ocoee, in 1976; the couple celebrated 43 years of marriage and had two children, son Michael and daughter Amanda, as well as four grandchildren.

The celebration of life is at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Evolve Church, in Ocoee.

OCPS staff highlighted NAMI Ending the Silence — a presentation by the National Alliance on Mental Illness designed to give audience members an opportunity to learn about mental health through an informative slideshow and videos. hen Amber Matlach was choosing a project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, she had to look no further than her two neighbors for inspiration. Sydney Whitman is a fourth-grader with developmental disabilities and has difficulty communicating, and Nicholas Pena is a third-grader with autism.

Amber wanted to create sensory items after seeing how well they worked for her two young friends.

“I wanted to be an advocate for them to help them, and that’s what really inspired me,” she said.

Amber calls her project A SENSE of the World, and she has been sewing and putting together sensory bags, beanbags, cubes and pillows; marble mazes; rainbow rings; I Spy bags; fine-motor skills bracelets; and shape and color manipulatives. She made a total of 140.

“I’ve just seen Sydney with the items in her house and seen how much they helped her with finemotor skills,” Amber said. “And it helps decrease their discomfort in their environment and helps with their communication skills.”

Amber gave Sydney one of the sensory toys, and she plays with it constantly.

“The I Spy bag, she takes it every day on the bus,” Amber said. “It gets her thinking about colors and shapes and numbers and all sorts of things.”

A majority of the project involved fabric, and to gather what was needed for the project, Amber went to craft stores, thrift stores and yard sales.

“Sensory toys and other therapies can be very expensive and a financial burden to some families’ budgets,” Amber said. “Through my project, A SENSE of the World, I hope to relieve this financial burden by making various sensory items and donating them to families. … This is important because these children need sensory items to assist in stimulating their five senses. This benefits them by helping improve their communication and decreasing discomfort and fear.”

The items are especially useful for tactile people who are comforted by touching different textures.

“I have seen firsthand how much progression there can be when sensory-stimulating items are present,” Amber said.

This project has allowed Amber to use her sewing skills, which she acquired at the age of 5. It also gave her a chance to practice project management, budgeting and presentation skills. She solicited the help of a Clermont quilting group, Kindred Stitchers, which made an additional 50 marble mazes.

The products were tested on Sydney and Nicholas for effectiveness; they approved.

“Their reaction was critical,” Amber said.

of them to the Exceptional Student Education program, where Sydney’s and Nicholas’ teachers can use them to work with students. Another donation is going to Nathaniel’s Hope, an Orange County nonprofit that organizes events for parents of children with disabilities. Amber is partnering with its Buddy Break program at First Baptist Windermere.

LIFE SCOUT

Amber joined the Girl Scout program 10 years ago as a Daisy and has advanced through the ranks of Brownie, Junior and Cadet. She is a Senior, with only the Ambassador rank after that. She’s a member of Troop 60726, a travel troop that meets several times a month.

Obtaining the Gold Award is Amber’s goal; she already has earned her Bronze and Silver awards and wears them pinned onto her scouting vest.

The Gold Award ceremony is June 13.

“Not very many girls earn their Gold Award,” Amber said. “It’s hard work, but I’m glad I did it. … Girl Scouts just gives you a lot of opportunities in the community and really gives you a chance to advocate for the people in the community, and I’m thankful for that.”

At West Orange, Amber runs cross-country and plays varsity lacrosse. Her goal after graduation is to attend either the U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Naval Academy — so she can continue serving others. She is the daughter of Chuck and Nicole Matlach, of Winter Garden.

Her project was a success, Amber said, and she doesn’t want it to end.

She set up an Instagram page — @a.sense.of.the.world or #asenseoftheworldgs — that includes instructional videos for people wanting to try their hand at making some sensory items.

part of the Florida Department of Transportation, will host a public kickoff open house Tuesday, March 10, at the Ocoee Lakeshore Center regarding a potential project to widen Florida’s Turnpike from south of State Road 408 to State Road 50.

The open house will specifically address a project development and environment study — a process conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation to determine the social, economic, physical and environmental impacts of the project. The goal of the study is to develop and evaluate project alternatives that would enhance safety, accom-

modate travel demands, improve travel time reliability and improve system linkage.

The study area extends along Florida’s Turnpike from south of State Road 408 to State Road 50, as well as along State Road 408 from the Turnpike interchange to east of the Old Winter Garden Road overpass.

“Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise has identified the need to widen (to add capacity to) this portion of the Turnpike to accommodate forecasted traffic volumes of freight and passenger vehicles generated by anticipated growth in Orange County and adjacent counties, and to improve emergency evacuation times for the year 2045,” according to the Flor-

Alternatives will be developed and presented at a public information meeting tentatively scheduled for this fall. The study is tentatively scheduled to be completed by fall 2021.

The Oakland Town Commission gave its nod of approval to the proposed master plan for Speer Park at its Feb. 25 meeting.

The town hired a consulting firm, CPWG, last year to help create the plan. In September, a community meeting was held to get input from residents regarding what they would like to see in the park. Recommendations were posted on large sheets of paper around the room, and attendees placed stickers on their top choices.

The town held a work session, and CPWG took the suggestions and provided a final draft.

Town Manager Steve Koontz said there will be no major changes to the 5-acre park.

“We are renovating and rehabbing what we have there,” he said.

A rendering of the Speer Park plan was presented to commissioners.

Koontz said there are two changes: the space designated for future restrooms on the north side will be moved further east with a sidewalk extension veering off from the existing gazebo, and a junior baseball court will be built beside the existing half court on the park’s south side.

Koontz shared a list of recommended projects for the park, to be completed based on funding availability. These include an overall park maintenance plan, tree maintenance plus a replacement and planting plan, removal of old and broken furnishings and the addition of new ones, landscaping, updated signage, a butterfly garden, buildout of a sidewalk plan, renovation of the tennis courts and new pickleball court, the addition of a pavilion to the west side, and bicycle racks.

The new pavilion will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Koontz said it will be located closer to the playground. The town still has to realize a lighting plan that is both considerate of neighbors and appropriate for security measures.

One of the bigger projects will be the replacement of the 18-year-old playground equipment, Koontz said. The town will need to research the most appropriate playground pieces before the purchase and installation. Residents had shared a desire for natural equipment rather than brightly colored pieces.

Oakland officials have collected and inventoried 29 boxes of historic items and two oil paintings, which will be delivered to the WGHF’s History Research and Education Center under a one-year loan/storage agreement. Included in the terms of the agreement is that the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation will use these items in future exhibits at Oakland’s arts and heritage center.

In addition, WGHF is returning to the town the second official minutes book from the mid-1900s to 1920s, to be stored with other municipal records.

Another piece of the park puzzle is a memorial planned by Eagle scout candidate Caleb Farr, but Koontz said this will be done independent of the town’s projects.

on amenities that draw Oakland residents and not the population at large on a daily basis. It still will be used for community festivals that typically also bring in residents from the surrounding communities.

The possibility of adding designated parking spaces was presented, but the consensus was that it’s a community park and most users will walk to it. Passive parking will remain on the north and west sides of the park for town events held in the park.

The commission gave Koontz authorization to move forward with executing the elements from the project list as funding allows.

In Chapter 553 of the Florida Statutes, local governments are allowed to adopt and enact local administrative amendments to the Florida Building Code that are stricter than the minimum standards.

City ordinance 20-15 creates two new code sections that developers must adhere to going forward when it comes to certain multifamily structures.

One section requires certain exterior and interior load-bearing walls in certain structures — commercial offices and multifamily buildings — be made from masonry block, metal or concrete. The other requires vertical accessibility, or elevators, in certain multifamily structures that have two or more floors.

The elevator requirement also was to apply to structures with 10 or more dwelling units, but that was since changed. During the previous commission meeting, City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said the addition of the variance was necessary, because in economic development areas in lowincome neighborhoods, elevators could pose an issue of out-pricing for the project.

“After our last meeting, there’s a provision in there that allows developers of 50 or less dwelling units to request a waiver from that section for the elevator,” Community Development Director Steve Pash said. “We also added a provision that they can request a waiver (from) that section if they’re doing affordable housing, as was requested by the board.”

The exhibit is a revisitation of Winter Garden’s African American community 20 years after it was documented in “Small Town Orange County: The Central Florida Communities of South Apopka, Bithlo, East Winter Garden, and Taft.”

Tanja Gerhartz, the city’s economic development director, said the exhibit will be on display until April 30. Then, it will be displayed at the Maxey Community Center.

Coronavirus preparations underway in Orange County STAFF WRITER

After Gov. Ron DeSantis announced two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Florida, Orange County leaders announced they have taking measures locally to prepare for the virus.

County officials held a press conference Monday, March 2, regarding the steps being taken to prepare for COVID-19. Of the two confirmed cases of the virus in Florida, one case is located in Manatee County and the other case is in Hillsborough County.

On March 1, DeSantis issued an executive order declaring a public health emergency and statewide response for the coronavirus.

A third presumptive case of COVID-19 in Florida was announced Tuesday, March 3, at press time.

Here are some tips to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, according to the Orange County website.

Mayor Jerry Demings said it’s just a matter of time before the coronavirus arrives in the Central Florida area. He added the county began preparing for the virus Jan. 29.

“We at Orange County have been monitoring and planning for the day the coronavirus would become a public health emergency in our community, and that day, of course, is today,” Demings said. “With two cases in Florida, but well outside of Orange County, we believe it’s a matter of time before we have a case right here in our backyard.”

Demings added that, despite the fast pace at which the virus has been spreading, county leaders are remaining calm and are encouraging residents to do the same. The county has been working with the Florida Department of Health to ensure local officials are ready to address the virus.

“If a case occurs in Orange County, we have protocols and procedures in place,” Demings said.

Orange County paramedics and firefighters are prepared and have been trained for any coronavirus response. Dr. Raul Pino, health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County, said than 30 individuals in the county are being monitored for the virus.

These individuals have recently traveled to regions of the world where the virus is present. He added that these are “very, very low-risk individuals” and they will be monitored for 14 days.

“We are prepared to take the necessary steps from a political point of view but also from a health point of view,” Pino said. “We have received legal advice in how to isolate (and) quarantine and (we) encourage individuals to take the precautions that they need.”

School district gives update on COVID-19 Orange County Public Schools is in constant communication with the Florida Department of Health regarding the spread of COVID-19. As of March 3, Florida had three presumptive cases of the disease.

OCPS is taking the threat of COVID-19 seriously and is dedicated to ensuring proper protocols are in place to protect staff and students. The district’s current cleaning products are proven effective against the coronavirus (the virus that causes COVID-19). When respiratory or gastrointestinal outbreaks occur, schools are disinfected.

If a student or staff member exhibits symptoms, he or she will be encouraged to stay home.

WOHS theater students remount productions West Orange High School thespians will be performing their productions of “Curtains” and “Lilies on the Land” at the upcoming State Thespian Festival from March 18 to 21, in Tampa.

Before they hit the road, they will need to raise about $85,000 to cover the related expenses for the trip.

The theater department has set up a fundraising website and also will be presenting remounts of both shows for the community to see. The remount of “Curtains” is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 6 and 7 and 2:30 p.m. March 8. “Lilies on the Land” will be presented at 7 p.m.

March 11. Both productions will be held at the auditorium at West Orange High, 1625 S. Beulah Road, Winter Garden.

Show-goers will be able to see both productions for the purchase of one ticket at wohstheatre.com/box-office.

PRAIRIE LAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Tiffany Outland is a dean and the testing coordinator at Prairie Lake Elementary. She has been at the school — and in the education field — for 16 years.

She was nominated by Robert Strenth, Prairie Lake principal, who said of Outland: “She does a great job working with student behaviors and mentoring students who often don’t experience success.” She also worked as the cheerleading coach at Ocoee High School for nine years.

What do you love most about your school?

I love the friendships that I have built and the sense of community that’s been built along the way.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is the relationships that I build with students and the difference I make in their lives.

What motivates you and pushes you to do your best?

When I see a smile on a student’s face or when I see a student make academic or behavioral growth, it keeps me motivated to do more.

What’s the nicest thing a student or faculty member has done for you?

A student writing me a thank-you note or coming back to see me after they’ve moved on to middle school and to see the long-term positive effects I’ve had on them.

Eli will be starting preK in the fall, and he is super excited to go to school like his big sister.

est Orange High School students raised money to change lives during their annual Warriorthon Friday, Feb. 28. The event raises funds for Children’s Miracle Network, which raises funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide vital treatments to children around the United States and Canada. Every hour on the top of the hour, dozens of West Orange High students stopped what they were doing and jumped into the rhythm of a morale dance. They also got to participate in fun games and activities while raising more than $40,000 for the children.

The Legacy Charter High School baseball team is on an impressive pitching streak; the Eagles have thrown three consecutive no-hitters. Senior Andrew Birko and sophomore Colby McClure threw a combined no-hitter in the Eagles’ game against Umatilla Monday, Feb. 24. A day later, the Eagles shut out Umatilla again, when senior Justin LaGasse was one walked batter away from a perfect game.

Life and sports have a tendency of being reflective of one another — there are high highs and low lows — with more of the latter than the former.

Although Tatum — a Winter Garden native and West Orange High alumnus — is now playing for the newly formed LA Wildcats of the XFL, he knows the struggles of trying to achieve the difficult task of making it to the NFL. “I went through some really dark times to get to this plan — I didn’t have it the easy way, man,” Tatum said. “I came from semi-pro — that’s literally where I started at. This road for me has not been easy ... it’s been a journey for me.”

In 2019, Krystal Thomas decided it was time to make a change in her life.

For going on nine years, she had played on the highest level of basketball in the WNBA and had played overseas during the offseason.

By the end of the 2019 season with the Women’s Korean Basketball League — where Thomas played for Asan Woori Bank Wibee — she knew that now was the time to retire and put her efforts into the next generation of players. It was something she was completely at

“With the ending of my career, the three main focuses that I wanted to have were focus on my faith, focus on my family and then focus on giving back to the youth,” Thomas said. “One of the best ways to work with youth — and be able to impact youth in the way that I was impacted — was through working for a school.”

Thomas, a graduate of The First Academy, first landed a job as a substitute teacher at Foundation Academy before taking a job as the middle school physical education teacher. Given her basketball background, she also picked up jobs serving as the head coach of the middle school team and assistant on the varsity team.

football field for the Warriors his junior and senior seasons and had earned first team all-metro and all-conference honors as a senior cornerback.

His talents landed him a scholarship at the University of Delaware to play for the Blue Hens football team. But there — during his freshman and sophomore years — he spent most of his time as a backup and only managed to start one game. That’s when Tatum decided to transfer and finish his collegiate career at Southern Illinois University.

At SIU, Tatum found playing time as a consistent starter for the Salukis. Despite the success, it wasn’t enough to help Tatum make it to the pros.

“I went to a couple of really nice D1 schools, but out of college, it wasn’t easy for me,” Tatum said. “I didn’t get a shot right out of college to go to the NFL. I did a bunch of workouts, but no team brought me in.”

After playing at the semi-pro level, Tatum moved to the West Coast, where he found a home with the Wenatchee Valley Skyhawks of the American West Football Conference. Tatum didn’t stick around long, and he moved back home to Florida to play for the Orlando Predators during the summer of 2019.

When did you first get into tennis?

I started playing tennis probably around fifth grade, and I got into the sport because I was trying a lot of sports — I did a lot of YMCA sports — and I was trying to find out what I was good at. My parents played in high school, so they took me out and I just played for fun with my dad and my little brother. I started to enjoy the sport, so he paid for lessons.

What is it about the sport that has kept you playing for so long?

It’s a good reason to stay in shape, and it’s just a lot of fun with competition and trying to get better than other people. If they’re getting better than me, and I have beat them before, I don’t want them get better than me — I want to stay on top of them and not lose my title.

What has been your favorite thing about playing at West Orange?

Probably the people here — my teammates. I’ve played with some of them since freshman year and I’ve grown good relationships with them. And even the new people who join the team, we welcome them and you get to make a lot of good, new friends that you can keep (up) with.

What is the most challenging part about playing tennis, and what is your favorite part about playing tennis?

I think the most challenging part about playing tennis is keeping the drive to want to keep playing in the point, because if you’re tired you want to stop but you have to keep going — you have to stay in the game and keep focused.

(My) favorite part would probably (be) being in close games — I don’t like shutting the person out, it’s not as fun. If it’s a fun game, your teammates

are cheering for you, and when it’s just a shut out on either side, there is no fun in that.

What are the best words of advice you have been given about tennis?

Just never let yourself get down, and stay in the game.

Don’t get depressed, because that really ruins things.

When you do hit those tough streaks on the court, how do you mentally get past that?

I just don’t want to let my family down, my team down or everyone down — you’re playing for everyone, not just yourself. When you’re playing in a tournament, you’re kind of playing for you, but when you’re playing with a high school team, your score counts toward everything — it’s not just you.

It also was during that time that Tatum received an email inviting him to a showcase in New York for the newly formed XFL. “I had a game on that Saturday, but the showcase was on Friday — so I flew out to New York on Thursday morning, did the showcase Friday, flew back and played my game,” Tatum said.

CITY OF ANGELS

Since being taken by the Wildcats with the first pick of the fourth round, Tatum has a routine he now lives by.

He wakes at 6 a.m. to eat breakfast, then takes in morning meetings before practices start. It’s a busy — but simple — schedule to keep, but it didn’t come without early struggles.

“The (environment) is completely different than Florida,” Tatum said. “When I first got out here, my breathing was a little different — even though I was conditioned — and I was training in a much different environment.

“But the time difference, that was probably the biggest thing — I was jet-lagged the first couple of days, waking up at 3 or 4 in the morning and not getting a lot of rest,” he said.

Tatum also had to adapt to the differences in the game itself.

Coming into this season, did you have any goals in mind that you wanted to accomplish?

So this year we are in a new district now, so we don’t have to play against the other teams that we did before, so I’m kind of hoping we have a better chance at districts.

For both teams, the early message from Thomas was that the 2019-20 season was going to be different from the past. A mindset change was going to happen, but in order to do that, Thomas had to teach them what she knew without confusing them.

“It’s very different to translate what’s going on in my brain — what I’ve learned at all the levels that I’ve played at — to a middle school or high school level,” Thomas said. “I got very good at demonstrating and talking slower.”

After a match, if you could have your ideal meal, what would you have?

Probably the spicy chicken deluxe at Chick-fil-A with two Chick-fil-A sauces with it and fries.

When you grow up, what do you want to be?

I think for now I kind of want to be a dentist, and I want to go to UF and see where it goes from (there). Obviously if I don’t like that career I can change, but something in the medical field.

Before Thomas found success at the professional level, she was a dominant force on the TFA girls basketball team.

She led TFA to two straight Class 2A state titles, was tapped as the 2007 Gatorade State Player of the Year and landed several top honors — including being named a McDonald’s All-American.

And all of that success didn’t just stop at TFA — it continued on when she arrived in Durham, North Carolina, to play for the Duke University women’s team.

herself adjusting to a game that was faster and more physical than any high school game she had played in.

“When I played at Duke, every single game was intense — we had no games off, and there were no days off,” Thomas said. “We were ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation, so we were always really good and the target was always on our backs.”

By the end of her four years, Thomas had become the team’s leading rebounder and blocker.

Thomas’ work ethic and size led to her being picked up in the 2011 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm in the third round (No. 36 overall).

Despite being drafted, her chances of actually making the team — given how few make it — was essentially 0 %, Thomas said.

She was just there to participate in training camp. Despite the odds, Thomas worked hard and managed to land one of two open spots on the team.

Thomas would spend half a season in Seattle before being waived and then immediately picked up by the Phoenix Mercury. It was there in Phoenix when Thomas recalled having

NFL and even more so than the arena football he had been playing. He also had to switch from the defensive specialist position — a spot specifically played in arena — to the corner and nickel positions for the Wildcats.

By the time of the Wildcats’ inaugural game against the Houston Roughnecks, which aired primetime on FOX, Tatum was ready and knew the significance of the moment.

“It was definitely surreal,” Tatum said. “We worked all year just to be in a situation like this — to have this opportunity. I had to remind myself, ‘Don’t let the moment be too big for you.’”

Tatum spent time on both defense and special teams that game, and although he didn’t rack up much in stats, he finally had found his place on a national stage playing the game he loved.

Now halfway through the season, there is still plenty of football to played. For Tatum, that means more opportunities to win and prove himself.

“I’m excited to go out there and compete every game, because I love this game and I love to compete,” Tatum said.

“The main goal is to win the XFL championship. And I want to put myself in the best position to be seen by the NFL. That’s everybody’s goal — to get to the league or get back to the league.”

“I went in and scored two baskets right away,” Thomas said. “I got some real consecutive minutes, and we were winning and I was playing with Diana Taurasi. Taurasi was passing me the basketball and I’m scoring and got an and one, and she came up and gave me a chest bump.”

For the next several years, Thomas would continue to make her mark in the WNBA with the Mercury, Indiana Fever and Washington Mystics, while also finding success in the offseason with teams in France, China, Spain, Turkey and South Korea.

While those fun, yet hectic, days are now behind the 30-year-old Thomas, she can now enjoy focusing her attention on her teams — who have already provided her with incredible memories, she said.

“The best moment for me was when they realized they could win districts,” Thomas said. “There was a game, and afterwards there was just a look on their faces that showed me they realized they could do something special at this school that hadn’t been done in a long time.”

Basketball season comes to an end for local schools West and Southwest Orange schools went 0-for-4 Friday night in regional final contests.

It was a tough outing for four local teams, as Ocoee High School, Windermere High School, Windermere Preparatory School and Central Florida Christian Academy each lost in the regional finals.

WINDERMERE’S SEASON ENDS IN 70-51 REGIONAL FINAL LOSS TO OAK RIDGE

Going into Friday night’s Class 7A, Region 2 championship game, everything had been going in Windermere’s favor.

mantled Osceola 69-55 in the quarterfinals before sneaking past Wharton in the semis. Unfortunately, things were much different when the Wolverines met the buzzsaw that was Oak Ridge Friday, Feb. 28.

Consistent shooting and offensive rebounds helped the Pioneers (21-8) put an end to the Wolverines’ season with a 70-51 victory.

“Out of the gate, we didn’t play very well, and they did — credit them, they took it to us a little bit,” said Windermere head coach Mark Griseck. “They hurt us on the boards. … We didn’t match their physicality and didn’t match their intensity.”

Things couldn’t have started out worse for Windermere early as the Wolverines struggled to hit shots, while the Pioneers took advantage of second chances off of offensive rebounds — resulting in a 18-6 lead for the away team seven minutes into the game.

The Wolverines finally found their footing in the last minute of the quarter as they cut the lead to 21-15, before trimming it down to just three points at 26-23 with 3:30 left in the half.

Just as the Wolverines found their way, the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run before the half — making it 35-23. The Wolverines never recovered from that run, and the Pioneers pushed their lead to 26 points with fewer than five minutes to go in the game.

Despite the loss, Kanye Jones finished with 14 points, while Jaden Golston had 10 points.

For Griseck, it was a disappointing game to end the year, but it wasn’t a season without its successes.

“There’s so much to be proud of — I’m so proud of our guys,” Griseck said. “We didn’t play well tonight, but what a great season.

Like I told them, a lot of people wish they were sitting in the locker room tonight instead of sitting and watching our game.”

KNIGHTS FALTER LATE IN 68-65 LOSS TO SEMINOLES IN REGIONAL FINAL

A 10-0 run by the Seminole High School Seminoles late in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Ocoee Knights lost 68-65 in the Class, 7A Region 1 championship game Friday, Feb. 28.

After a back-and-forth first half, Ocoee (22-8) went into halftime up 37-35 on a three-pointer from Johnny Taylor.

In the third quarter, Ocoee’s lead got all the way up to nine, but a late run by Seminole (26-4) trimmed the lead to 53-49 after three.

“We did a good job of controlling the tempo,“ Ocoee head coach John “Sarge” Siers said. “That was the key.”

Seminole’s run continued into the beginning of the fourth quarter as it took a 54-53 lead with 7:12 left in the game.

The Knights responded with a 7-0 run to lead 60-54 with 3:59 remaining. Then, the Seminoles regained the lead with 2:47 left on a three. After the lead went up to 64-60, Ocoee was forced to foul, and David Green consequently fouled out of the game after putting up 22 points on the night.

After Seminole missed the first half of a one-and-one, Ocoee cut Seminole’s lead to two on a layup from Alston Andrews with 38.6 seconds left in the game.

Seminole made three of its next four free throws, but a three from Jason Coronado made it 67-65 with 16.9 seconds to go. Ocoee fouled right after the ball was inbounded, and Seminole made one of its two free throws.

With 8.4 seconds left, Ocoee inbounded the ball, but it was tipped out of bounds. Then, with 4.1 seconds, Ocoee turned it over.

“It came down to a couple of possessions,” Siers said. “We had the lead with three minutes to play, turned it over three times in a row.

Can’t do that against a good team on the road.”

The game had a sold-out crowd at Seminole High School — the first in its history.

“We handled it very well until the end,” Siers said of playing in front of a huge crowd on the road.

“Our guys being able to hear us and communicate was tough, but we handled it until the last three minutes.”

For the Knights, a historic season comes to an end. With 11 seniors on the team, they won 22 games and the metro conference. “ T h ey ’ve established themselves as the best basketball team in the history of Ocoee (High School),” Siers said. “Most wins, first metro championship (and the) farthest run in the playoffs.

So they’re the first but they won’t be the last. We’re going back to the lab and we’re going to be good for a long time coming. These guys will always be the first.”

Randy was hired by the city of Winter Garden Fire Department in November 1974 as a Fire Inspector.

He rose through the ranks from a Fire Inspector, Firefighter, Lieutenant and then Captain. In 1984, he was a Division Commander, promoted

to Assistant Chief in 1985 and was appointed as the city’s Fire Chief in July 1994 — a position he held until his retirement. Randy retired in January 2002, after more than 27 years of service to the Department and the city of Winter Garden. He was very passionate about the Fire Department, everything it involved and helping others.

He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Linda.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of Leesburg, Florida; son, Christopher (Ayanna) of Brooklyn, New York; and grandsons, Kingston and Channing of Winter Garden, Florida.

A celebration of John’s life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at West Orange High School, 1625 Beulah Road, Winter Garden, Florida.

John Boston, 72, former teacher, coach and athletic director at West Orange High School, passed away Friday, Feb. 21, at his home in Leesburg, Florida.

Born in Pomona, California, John was the son of Fern and Arnold Boston. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Malone College in Canton, Ohio.
