Up, up and away Get ready to take a sunset flight near Lake Hancock during Hamlin’s upcoming balloon festival.

It won’t be much like the house tethered to balloons in Disney’s “Up,” but in just a few days, you will be able to step into a hot-air balloon and get a bird’s-eye view of Horizon West.

The Hamlin Balloon Festival is taking place Saturday, March 2, and the views that balloon passengers will be treated to promise to be second to none — a sunset over Lake Hancock and a new perspective of Hamlin, to name a few.

Kenny Shumate, a ballon pilot of 38 years and self-proclaimed “balloonatic,” will be one of the pilots flying at the festival. He and four other experienced balloonists will bring their balloons, and Shumate said each pilot has more than 30 years of experience in the craft.

“I started here in Orlando in the early 1980s, and I just saw a balloon fly over my house one day and thought, ‘That’s kind of cool,’” Shumate said. “My neighbor said, ‘Hey, I know someone that does that. Want to go do it?’

I went out the next day to Kissimmee. The guy that I flew with the first time built his own balloon, basket and burner. I’d never seen a balloon before so I didn’t know how this stuff worked. It’s just so cool, really neat. He said, ‘You want to go for a flight?’ I hopped in his balloon, and away we went.

We took off from the Kissimmee airport and landed almost to Lake Apopka.”

Shumate has logged more than 4,000 hours in the air, and he said most of the pilots at the festival

A proud heritage A photography exhibit documenting Winter Garden’s historical black community opens this week in celebration of Black History Month.

Saturday have no fewer than 2,000 hours. Throughout his time as a balloonist, he has owned 57 or 58 balloons of different shapes, sizes and colors.

“I buy them, fly them and sell them,” he said. “It’s just great. I absolutely love it. Right now, I’m down to three, I think. If a deal comes along I can’t pass up, I’ll just buy it. What usually happens is I’ll fly it, fall in love with it and then hate to see it go.

“I would take off from work five months a year and travel all up through Canada, New York, Maine, Virginia, Arkansas and Tennessee,” he said. “I was doing 25 to 35 balloon events a year. I would do the ones here in Florida, because we fly here year-round — up north they shut down from October to March or April.”

Balloons undergo an inspection either annually or every 100 hours of flight time. Federal Aviation Administration inspectors come and check every panel of the nylon balloon fabric. Pilots also undergo biannual reviews. The standards are much the same as those for airplane pilots, Shumate said. Tanks are certified every few years, and every part of the balloon is checked and certified or replaced if needed on their own schedules.

For the Hamlin festival, balloons will be tethered to a vehicle setup to keep them in place. Shumate said he hopes to be able to ascend at least 80 to 90 feet in the air, depending on winds and weather. Each ride costs $20 per person. It will last about five minutes or so, and passengers will be able to take in the views of Walt Disney World, Horizon West and, of course, Hamlin.

Although the festival starts at 5:30 p.m., Shumate said he usually flies early in the morning, because the temperatures are much cooler, and winds tend to be calmer.

It’s risky flying during the hottest parts of the day, because the balloons are already powered by heat.

Before they fly, pilots check the weather forecast and look at wind direction and speed. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to prepare the balloon for flight, and once in the air, they are heated every 10 to 15

“If you want to fly and go higher, you give it more heat, and if you want it to come down, you don’t give it heat,” he said. “My favorite time (of year) to fly is right about now, even though we are having unusually warm weather. March and April are (on their way) in and orange blossoms are coming out.

Everything is starting to come into bloom, and it’s absolutely gorgeous.

“In the open basket, you get out there and see so many things and the only control you have is up or down — that’s why we see what the wind is doing,” he said. “It’s quite amazing.”

A photographic documentary that originally debuted as a four-town project of Orange County Government and the Crealdé School of Art is getting new life as a photo exhibit in Winter Garden City Hall.

Peter Schreyer, executive director of Crealde, in Winter Park, was tasked with photographing four underserved areas for the book “Small Town Orange County: The Central Florida Communities of South Apopka, Bithlo, East Winter Garden and Taft” in 1996.

A portion of the original documentary highlighted the east side of Winter Garden, a community that since has been the focus of a redevelopment initiative. Schreyer photographed the people and the community and provided information about each one.

The book coincided with the county’s reopening of four community centers. Schreyer called the photos a gift to the community.

In the recent months, the city and Schreyer have been working to touch up and expand the exhibit for Black History Month.

Schreyer said the original photos have been on display at the Maxey Community Center for 23 years. He has reframed the images and updated the accompanying information.

Five images have been added “to show new players in the community and highlight the city’s plan in east Winter Garden,” he said.

Also featured will be two large, collaborative paintings created by students in Crealdé instructor Patricia Byron’s Wednesday afternoon art class at the Maxey Community Center. Crealdé has offered free art lessons in east Winter Garden for more than two decades.

Thursday, Feb. 28, at Winter Garden City Hall, 300 W. Plant St. The community is being invited to attend and experience an updated version of a photography exhibit that debuted in 1996. The exhibit will remain on display through April 30 and eventually return to its home at the Maxey Community Center.

“That has been shown all over the country and all over the world,” he said. “It’s a beautiful photograph.”

Schreyer said he was grateful for the chance to return to the community for new photos.

“I think it’s high time we go back,” he said. “There’s so much there that’s not going to last forever.”

“This exhibit is an example of the hard work of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation and city staff,” said City Commissioner Mark A. Maciel, whose district is the east side of the city. “It goes hand in hand with the city’s efforts to improve east Winter Garden while keeping the AfricanAmerican culture and history in the forefront. This will be the first of many events honoring that proud history.”

B

efore Colleen Goldrick’s life fell apart, there was a time when she had it all.

She had a nice home in New Jersey, a fulfilling career as a hospital nurse and a loving family. But it wasn’t enough to thwart the progression of events that led to drug addiction and homelessness.

Goldrick, now 57, remains shocked at how it all happened so quickly and recalls that time of her life with emotional struggle.

STRUGGLE

Born and raised on Staten Island in New York, Goldrick grew up in a happy household. However, she had been exposed to an environment of alcohol and substance abuse from an early age.

“I grew up in a Roman Catholic Irish family,” Goldrick said.

“Drinking was just normal for my family. I was making drinks for my dad probably when I was 5 or 6. I had really good parents, and I went to a Catholic school, but there was always a struggle with drug abuse.

My father was an alcoholic. My mother also had problems with substances. But we lived in middle-class America, and we had a good life except for those times when alcohol got in the way and made things crazy.”

Goldrick eventually found herself following the same pattern of alcohol abuse. But at about age 19, Goldrick’s father decided to get sober after her mother attempted suicide several times. Her mother ended up in a treatment center, and Goldrick started attending the same center. The family also began going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings together.

Goldrick and her parents recovered. And it was at the meetings that Goldrick met her future husband. She enjoyed a 15-year marriage and had two daughters, Noel and Kathryn. She later became a nurse, and life could not have been better.

Then, it all unraveled. Following a neck injury she received at work, Goldrick was prescribed pain medication. She became addicted.

“I was working in the ER, and I had a patient come in who was a drug addict,” she recalled. “He was upset and just wanted his drugs, and he literally threw me across the room into the code cart. I hurt my neck pretty bad, and I had two surgeries. And so I started taking pain medication, but (because) I had

a history of addiction problems, after a while, I just started abusing it, and things went really downhill.

It was just a mess.”

THE TIME SHE LOST EVERYTHING

Her addiction eventually contributed to the dismantling of her life as she knew it. She refers to that period of her life as the time she lost everything: Her marriage, her job, her house, her car, her parents and, the most painful of all, her eldest daughter, Noel.

“I had lost my job, and I was in the process of losing my house,” she said. “I lost my car. I was up in New Jersey with my daughters, who were 19 and 25, and then my mother got diagnosed with leukemia. She moved to Florida with my father, so I came down. I literally left everything I owned in New Jersey. I just walked away from my life. That’s what it was like. I just couldn’t handle everything that was going on there.”

Her youngest daughter stayed in New Jersey with her father to continue college, and Noel followed her down to Florida about a month later. Despite the new living environment and circumstances, Goldrick’s addiction remained.

“As a nurse, I knew how to talk to a doctor and get the prescriptions I wanted,” she said. “I hate saying this stuff. Sometimes, I don’t even realize how sick I was until I sit and think about it. But when you’re in that addiction state of mind, you wake up and all you can think about is that next drug because your body

is so used to it.”

Eventually, she was able to wean herself off the pain medication. But when her mom died, she started drinking to cope. Her father died shortly after, as well.

Then, the unthinkable happened Sept. 23, 2017: Noel died from a drug overdose at 31 in St. Cloud.

“When she passed, I just started drinking even more,” she said through tears. “I didn’t care about anything. I just wanted to make the pain stop. I don’t think I ever hurt so bad in my life.”

Noel’s death finally forced her to seek professional help. After selling her parents’ home, she got a job as a live-in caregiver for an elderly couple. But once that couple passed, she found herself with no place to live.

“It was just one thing after another — one loss after another,” she said. “But if you had told me I was going to be homeless. ... I mean, I still have a hard time saying that word today. I came from middle-class America. I had a nice car, a nice house in a nice neighborhood, but then some things happened, and boom. And it doesn’t have to be addiction, but for so many people, it is because of addiction. It’s not a choice. It’s never a choice to be homeless. It’s not a choice to be a drug addict.”

For four months, Goldrick stayed in the homes of friends and strangers when she could, but she relapsed again and struggled with drug addiction. With the $8,000 she received from her father’s inheritance, she funded her addic-

tion. And in two months, the money was gone, she said.

Eventually, a friend took her to a rehab center, and Goldrick went through a 28-day detox. There, she learned of New Beginnings.

NEW BEGINNING

New Beginnings provided her with housing and counseling, as well as life-skill and Bible-study classes.

It helped her learn how to lead a healthier lifestyle and strengthened her relationship with God. She now works at the Winter Garden Thrift Store, but she hopes to obtain a job as a hospice nurse again soon.

“Hospice nursing is what I love doing, and that’s what I, eventually, would like to get back into,” she said. “But I need to make sure I’m strong enough before I do that.

But I guard my sobriety like a lion now, because I’ve had so many blessings in my life. I went to my daughter’s wedding and got to be a part of that. I might even be a grandma one day. And I just want to be there for all the blessings that are yet to come.”

Goldrick said she thanks New Beginnings for giving her a chance at a new life. In 2018, the nonprofit served 4,594 families, and 13,339 individuals, distributed 5,148 bags of emergency groceries, and housed 70 people, including Goldrick, said Erik Segalini, the organization’s community relations director.

“Homelessness is not what you think it is,” Goldrick said. “It’s people who experienced a series of unfortunate events that led them there. They’re just people, and it’s little acts of kindness that can help so much. And New Beginnings does amazing things in people’s lives. They’ve helped me find joy again. I never thought I’d see another happy day in my life. I have no doubt they saved my life. But it’s up to me now to keep it going.”

Grandson charged in Ocoee killing CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

a.m. Friday, Feb 22, from a man saying he was struggling with his grandfather when he gained possession of a gun and it went off, according to the affidavit for an arrest warrant. Deputies were dispatched to an address on Florence Vista Boulevard, Orlando, where Lucien Harris lived with Lou Harris. Inside, they found Lou Harris dead of a gunshot wound in the master bedroom, according to the arrest affidavit.

Deputies discovered two .22

caliber bullet casings in Lucien Harris’ bedroom and a trail of blood from his bedroom to the master bedroom.

A neighbor’s surveillance camera captured Lucien Harris grabbing a bicycle from the porch and riding north from the residence.

Lucien Harris was located in Mount Dora and subsequently arrested by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and transported to Orange County.

Family members told deputies Lucien Harris has a violent history, is prone to attacking family

members and has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia but refuses to take medication.

According to the affidavit, Lucien Harris was in possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Lucien Harris has multiple criminal felony charges dating back to 2004.

Lou Harris owned Harris Boxing Gym, on Ivey Lane in Orlando.

Family members said he trained a number of people who medaled in the U.S. Olympics through the years.

At about 11:30 p.m., a lawenforcement officer conducting foot patrol near the parking lot south of The Crooked Can encountered someone asleep in the driver’s seat of a vehicle with the engine running. The officer spotted what appeared to be vomit on the center console and proceeded to conduct a well-being check on the driver. The officer knocked on the driver-side window to wake up the driver, and the driver lowered his window. The driver informed the officer he had just come from the brewery, where he was drinking, and was taking a nap. The officer requested the driver perform field-sobriety exercises, and the driver refused.

The driver was placed under arrest for DUI and transported to a DUI testing center, where he also refused to submit to a breath test.

Clarcona-Ocoee Road. Thirddegree grand theft. At 2:30 p.m., a police sergeant monitoring traffic on Clarcona-Ocoee Road spotted a blue Chrysler pass by that had been reported stolen Dec. 28 by a rental car company. The sergeant caught up with the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the Chrysler, who had two driver’s licenses with different addresses, told the sergeant she had only borrowed the car from a neighbor to go to work that day, according to an arrest report.

It was discovered the driver had never been issued a valid driver license. The driver was issued a criminal citation for driving without a license and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.

400 block of East Orlando Avenue. At about 2 a.m., an officer patrolling the area of Sleepy Harbor Drive and Orlando Avenue spotted a pickup with a tag that had been reported stolen in Broward County. The officer immediately conducted a traffic stop, and the driver attempted to exit the pickup but was given multiple commands to stay inside the vehicle. The driver, who was then detained and questioned, said he received the vehicle from a friend in Fort Lauderdale about a year ago, and the stolen tag already was attached to it. He added he was not told by the owner of the vehicle that the tag was stolen but “had a feeling” it was stolen, according to an arrest report. The driver was arrested.

State Road 50. DUI with prior conviction. At about 9:55 p.m., someone called the department’s emergency dispatch number to inform officers they were behind a pickup that was swerving and had twice struck a median. An officer in a patrol car noticed surrounding vehicles were giving the pickup a wide berth, and the officer conducted a traffic stop.

The driver had bloodshot eyes with constricted pupils and gave off a strong odor of alcoholic impurities, the officer reported in an arrest affidavit. The driver told the officer he had consumed two beers and was on his way home.

The driver performed poorly in a field-sobriety exercise and was transported to a DUI testing center, where he refused to provide a breath sample to determine his blood alcohol level. The driver’s license had expired in May 2010.

About 300 volunteers spent their Friday night in the new sanctuary lobby collating the pages of 10,000 Bibles to be shipped to missionaries in Africa to further share the Christian faith.

Pastor Kenric Barnett joined the large team of children, teenagers, young adults and seniors who had assembled for the Hands-on Mission Project. Twenty-four stacks of pages were set up on each table, and volunteers repeatedly circled the table, creating a full Bible with each pass.

The Bible and Literature Missionary Foundation, in Shelbyville, Tennessee, is dedicated to printing, producing and shipping Bibles to continents around the globe. Churches around the country typically send representatives to the Shelbyville facility to volunteer their time assembling the Scriptures.

But Barnett was thinking bigger — he requested the pages of 10,000 Bibles be shipped to Ocoee to be put together by an entire congregation. BLMF Assistant Director Shannon Lemmon said

this is a first for the project.

“They’ve never had a church do 10,000 in one day at one church,” Barnett said. “I couldn’t take our entire church to Tennessee, but I wanted as many people as possible to participate.”

The theme of this week’s missions conference at West Orlando Baptist is “Hands-on Missions.”

“We can’t all go to Africa, but our goal is to have every one of us putting our hands on the Bible,” Barnett said.

After the pages were collated, they were stacked on 14 pallets, to be shipped to Georgia for binding and covers.

Barnett said one of the church’s missionaries will deliver a shipping container full of Bibles to Africa.

“There’s about 177 missionaries, and some of them travel about 400 miles to pick up Bibles, like from Kenya and Sudan,” Barnett said. “He goes to one church, people hear about it, and they come to this one church and get the Bibles and take them back to their villages.”

Commission approves changes to Ocoee Town Shops PUD STAFF WRITER

Ocoee city leaders at the Feb. 19 City Commission meeting approved changes to the Ocoee Town Shops Planned Unit Development.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve an amendment that changes the design and use of one of the buildings of the development and moves the location of where stormwater will be stored.

The 3.39-acre Ocoee Town Shops development is located at the northwest corner of Clarke Road and West Colonial Drive.

Plans for the development calls for a mix of uses such as retail, commercial, restaurant, drivethru restaurants, medical offices and financial services. The plans propose three commercial lots with three, one-story structures with a gross floor area totaling 30,443 square feet.

“This (development) goes back to 2009, when planning and developing approved (what’s going) on this property,” City Planner Mike Rumer said, adding that one of the buildings of the development was required to be a standalone restaurant space.

“We had brokers working on this (property). … Then it did get under contract by a developer, he had a groundbreaking, he cleared it and then walked away. The same property owner ... is now wanting to develop.”

The amendment makes some changes to the PUD land-use

plan and proposes a reduction to the overall building square footage from 30,443 to 27,750. The reduction accommodates a revision to lot one of the buildings on the development, which was approved for the 9,585 square feet of restaurant space. The revision changes the use from a restaurant building to 15,750 square feet of strip retail/restaurant building.

The amendment also moves the stormwater from under the parking lot to a retention pond.

The 9,585-square-foot restaurant building — which originally was divided into two separate suites — was meant to attract sitdown restaurants to the city.

Although the new plans designate the building as restaurant and retail, the two end caps of the buildings will include patio spaces for outdoor dining.

“The owner being involved all the way through the process understands how dearly important it is to us to try and get a restaurant (in Ocoee),” Rumer said.

“We’ve seen how the restaurant trends have changed. … In his (owner’s) plan for this building, he’s put wrap-around porches on the end caps to try to entice restaurants to use those (spaces).”

Bill Hockensmith, a senior project manager for Florida Engineering Group, has been involved with the project for about six years. He said multiple attempts were made to market the restaurant space to attract a quality restaurant to Ocoee. However, the attempts have been unsuccessful.

Murals inspire learning at Ocoee Elementary The school unveiled the freshly painted library walls earlier this month.

If you were to walk into Ocoee Elementary School’s library today, you wouldn’t recognize it from what it looked like a few months ago. The once-blank walls of the library have been brought to life with color as murals now adorn them.

“The mural represents the various types of landscapes that we have in Central Florida,” said Media Specialist Isabel Turner.

“You have the wetland landscape with the cypress trees and the hanging moss. … And then you move into the Florida forest.”

The school recently unveiled its new library Tuesday, Feb. 5. Orange County School Board leaders, including District 7 School Board member Melissa Byrd, swung by Ocoee Elementary for the unveiling of the library murals.

“I think (the mural) is beautiful,”

Byrd said. “Anytime you can combine fun and learning for the kids, it’s a great combination. There’s so many fantastic little learning experiences along the walls for the kids for years to come. This will be such a treasure.”

The library walls are adorned with an array of plants and animals native to Florida. Oak trees and Sabal palms adorn some of the walls, and birds like owls, cranes and cardinals — Ocoee Elementary’s mascot — rest upon the branches of those trees. One wall depicts turtles playing on logs, while another scene depicts raccoons playing soccer. Another wall is painted with a bear reading on top of a tree. And another scene shows various animals gathered around a campfire roasting marshmallows. A painted sign near them reads, “Camp Read S’more.”

“All the animals are native Florida species that you would find in this region,” Turner said. “The whole thing is whimsical. You see the purple and the blue colors in the tree — of course that’s not lifelike, but it’s not meant to be. It’s meant to be a play on (reality to)

make it a children’s library.”

Turner said the murals serve more than one purpose. Not only do the murals brighten up the library, but also they serve as a teaching tool and as a tool to inspire students and others who see it.

“It’s a teaching wall,” Turner said. “A big part of having the mural was to make this an inviting space for the entire school community. … And you may feel inspired by something. You might

look at the whooping crane and say, ‘I want to learn about him’ Or you may look at the fire and say, ‘How does fire work?’ It’s for you to spark your own imagination.”

A wall in one corner of the library depicts the scene of a sandhill with burrows that were dug by Florida gopher tortoises.

Owls, a snake, a frog and even a skunk are depicted in the burrows along with a gopher tortoise. This scene is just one example of how the murals serve as a learning tool.

“The burrow is really important because down in the burrow is a gopher tortoise, and he’s a keystone species,” Turner said.

“Without the gopher tortoise, the whole ecosystem of Central Florida collapses because he digs burrows and (other) animals make homes in the burrows in case of a wildfire.”

Ocoee Elementary’s library murals were painted by artist Lisa Mikler, who also painted the murals in the foyer of the school.

ake Whitney Dolphins showed off their creative sides at the school’s annual Art’s Night Thursday, Feb. 21. Facepainting, balloon animals and making blankets for the homeless were among the fun events. Students also enjoyed food trucks, puppet and chalk-art demonstrations as well as performances by Footworks Dance Studio, the SunRidge Middle School Jazz band and performances by fellow students.

Putting together a benefit for a friend takes a lot of heart, and there is no doubt the Winter Garden community has plenty of it.

Friends of Michael Hartson have banded together to assemble a comedy and music benefit called “Get Your Harts On!” to raise funds for the actor, who recently starred as Herbie in the Garden Theatre’s fall production of “Gypsy.” “Get Your Harts On!” will take place at the Garden Theatre at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 5.

Hartson was diagnosed with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer and currently is receiving aggressive forms of treatment in Tallahassee while being cared for by sisters Michele and Kathleen.

Andrea Canny, one of the benefit co-hosts and mastermind behind the upcoming event, met Hartson when he played the original John Smith in Disney’s “Pocahontas” show at then-MGM Studios back in the 1990s. He also played the original Phoebus in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” also at MGM. Most recently, they starred alongside each other in “Gypsy.”

“Michael is a working actor, but it can be very difficult, and

he didn’t have insurance, because you’re going from gig to gig,” Canny said. “(We wanted to) just to ease the financial burden a bit, but … I look at this as our love letter to Michael. I can’t make him feel any better physically, and there’s so much we don’t have control over with what he’s dealing with, but I was like, ‘I can do this. I can gather people together and make people laugh.’ But at the same time, when a friend is hurting, you feel pretty powerless, and this is one thing I can do.”

Over the last few weeks Canny and her team of volunteers and professionals have worked to bring their vision of a fundraiser for Hartson to life.

“I have a team of amazing professionals as far as the production team, and the Garden Theatre has been amazingly supportive, letting us use not only their facility but their technicians, the box office, everybody there has been giving us permission to do this,” Canny said.

“They made everything happen to where the online donate button goes directly to Michael’s GoFundMe page. … The production team we’ve brought on, they’re always my first calls. I wish I wouldn’t have to do these benefits anymore, but I know at least when I do them, I have the best people on board.”

Canny’s production team includes Gary Graham, George Jackson, Scott Battaglia and Fran Falcone. The Garden Theatre team includes Executive Director , Nao Tsurumaki; Artistic Director, Rob Anderson; front-of-house manager, Debbie Sansing; Production Manager, Jason Golinsky and

The show starts at 8 p.m., but doors will open at 7 p.m. to allow guests the opportunity to grab snacks from the concession stand and view a video compilation of some of Hartson’s previous film appearances. Additionally, guests can bid on silent-auction items such as a private dance lesson with Orlando Ballet artist-in-residence Arcadian Broad.

“It’s just going to be a really great combination of stuff,” she said. “For people who don’t know Michael, it’s going to be well worth the $20, and we want to sell the place out. … It’s three things. First, an opportunity for people to laugh in a time where there’s not a lot of laughter these days. Two, to support a fellow human and feel good about yourself as a human. Three is that love letter to Michael. I want people to see that and want people to go, ‘Wow, these people really love this guy.’”

George Orwell’s dystopian classic will be coming to life in Winter Garden this weekend.

The Garden Theatre’s production of “1984” opens Friday, March 1, and will run until March 17.

“It’s one of those iconic pieces that everyone has at least read or knows a little bit about,” said Stephen Lima, who is cast for the role of O’Brien. “The play is relatively new.”

The play adaptation of “1984” portrays the same dystopian society Orwell envisions in his book. The theater’s production will be the Central Florida premiere of the play, which follows a successful run on Broadway.

The story tells of an oppressed society controlled by a totalitarian government that uses brainwashing, propaganda, constant surveillance and torture to keep its subjects in line.

Winston Smith is the story’s protagonist, and the role of Winston will be played by Brian Zealand. When he saw that the Garden Theatre was going to be producing “1984,” he knew he had to be part of it.

“When I saw the listing for ‘1984,’ I was immediately interested and was fortunate enough to be cast in the role (of Winston),” Zealand said. “In a wonderful, theater-rich community like we have, the competition is high, so I was fortunate enough to be deemed worthy of this (role). … It’s not so much about the character. I feel like I would have been happy to have been involved with this production in any way. It’s about the production, it’s about the point (of ‘1984’) and it’s about the timing of it.”

portrayal of constant surveillance, telescreens, doublethink and doublespeak can be seen in today’s political climate, he said.

“As far as the timing goes, I feel like we are in a political climate … that is tense and outrageous,” Zealand said. “This particular piece of theater — ‘1984’ — is not out, I don’t think, to force an opinion … one way or the other.

It’s out to just put a mirror up.

You need to look at it. You need to look at yourself and you need to look at the current situation and times. It’s not telling you how to think — it’s just making sure that you are thinking.”

Lima compared one concept from “1984” to something that people carry around on a daily basis: smartphones.

“The idea of telescreens everywhere watching you (is possible),” Lima said. “If you think about it, we now carry the telescreens with us. … It almost seems like the technology has caught up to Orwell’s vision.”

“Big Brother is in our pockets,” Zealand added. “Some of the crazy things that were imagined in this book … we made it. It’s not only, ‘What can be done.’ It is done.”

onstage with numerous cameras that are set up around the theater for the show. Audiences will be able to watch scenes play out simultaneously as scenes will be played out both backstage and on stage. As scenes play out on stage, a camera will be catching another scene being played out backstage. The backstage scene will be shown on a screen above the stage will the onstage scene plays out.

“We have a bedroom backstage that they (characters) go into — so as an audience you don’t see them — but they’re being filmed and it’s being projected on a screen,” Lima said. “It’s a great concept because now the audience becomes Big Brother — they’re watching.”

DOROTHY MAE TAYLOR DIED FRIDAY, FEB. 15, 2019.

Dorothy Mae Taylor, 94, of Windermere, Florida, passed away at her home on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019.

She was born one of six children to the late Benjamin Franklin and Mary Ethel (Reynolds) Hagler on July 18, 1924, in Erin, Tennessee.

Dorothy met her groom, Albert Isaac, in Detroit, Michigan, through her brother-in-law, as they were all searching for work during the war. She fiercely became a “Rosie the Riveter” and then went on to marry her decorated Marine.

They had a beloved daughter together, and all moved back to Erin, Tennessee, where they started their own steel scaffolding manufacturing company and won the contract to provide the scaffold for the first Superdome in New Orleans.

Dorothy was not only a skilled

bookkeeper but mastered crocheting and embroidery. She made altar clothes and embroidered kneeling pads for St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and Erin Methodist Church, baby afghans for all the great-grandchildren and for expectant mothers in her community, and more than 100 pairs of adaptive Velcro clothing for wounded warriors returning from war in the Middle East.

She served in Sarah’s Circle at St. Luke’s; and, no one will ever forget her carrot cake and yeast

It’s also a time of celebration.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, under a cloudy sky, the West Orange softball team opened the new season by honoring one of its own in a game that was bigger than just softball.

Just before the game started, the Cavanzon family — including John, Johnny and Michelle — stood in front of home plate holding their late daughter Janessa’s old No. 14 jersey that the school framed for them.

“No words; there are no words,” said Michelle Cavanzon, Janessa’s mom, also a special-needs teacher at West Orange High. “I knew they were planning it, but they weren’t telling me anything. The place that we work, the place that she worked — he (Johnny) coached, he (John) graduated from there also — it’s a West Orange family.”

wall, the No. 14 that can be found on the back of helmets and shoes and the retiring of her jersey were all a part of the surprise for the Cavanzon family, who lost Janessa July 14, 2018, from a heart attack that was triggered by a seizure.

And to add to the moment, Janessa’s father, Johnny — who had coached her since she was 4 — got the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

“It was overwhelming,” Johnny said. “That was a real special moment, and it really means a lot to throw out that pitch. She played four years here, and I assisted coaching for four years with her. It just brought back a lot of memories. It was awesome.”

During her time as a studentathlete from 2004-07, Janessa became a well-known face around the softball program and school.

very basketball season, there are some moments that truly stand out among the others.

Throughout the year, student team manager Gavin Bryant had sat on the bench for the Ocoee varsity basketball team — helping his guys in any way that he could. But tonight — Jan. 31 — was different. Tonight was his moment of high-school glory.

Zoie Pistel Sophomore Zoie Pistel returns to the softball diamond for Legacy head coach Katherine Barnard as one of the team’s leading players. Last year, Pistel hit for a team second-best average (.469) while picking up 25 RBI and eight extra-base hits. While she racks up stats at the plate, Pistel will spend her time out in the field as a utility player for the Eagles, playing mostly at either short stop or centerfield.

What got you into playing softball?

I started when I was like, 10-and-a-half, and at first my mom was trying to convince me to play in the beginning, because my friends were playing at the West Orange Girls Club. I was kind of like, “No,” but then I finally tried it and I loved it.

How do you get ready for a game?

Usually I mentally prepare myself. I try to calm myself down, and try to get into a hype. I listen to music, hang with my friends, and laugh around and joke around.

What’s the most challenging part about playing highschool softball?

Probably the mental aspect of the sport. When you mess up, you can’t just get down. You have to be fine, take a deep breath — if you just have a bad mental state, then you’re just going to keep making errors.

As a utility player, you play at a few different positions.

Do you have a favorite among them?

Definitely short stop and center — those two are my favorite positions. Centerfield, because I guess I feel like in the outfield I’m free, and at short stop, I feel like I have a responsibility, and I need to just do my job.

Is there one aspect of your game that you’re trying to work on this season?

Mostly trying to not get as aggravated. Most of the time I’m not, but lately — I don’t know why — I’ve just gotten so angry sometimes. I just need to calm down and relax and just move on.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would definitely go to Uganda, because I once met a great group of kids from Uganda who came down with an organization called Watoto — they’re a singing choir and they go to churches and sing. Honestly, they just changed my life so much. I met them two years ago, and ever since then, I’ve grown attached.

When you grow up, what do you want to be?

I have a few choices that I really want to study and look into, but one of my first options would be either an athletic trainer, veterinarian or be an anesthesiologist.

teammate, Johnny said, and not a half-bad softball player to boot — acting as a captain for the team as a first-baseman.

And although she graduated in 2007, she wouldn’t be away long before she took on a role teaching special-needs students alongside her mother at the school.

She also helped coach the JV softball team.

“The first day that I stepped over there, she was always around the field helping, and she would do anything you asked her to do,” said former West Orange softball coach Bobby Brewer.

“As far as a family goes, you’re not going to find a tighter-knit family. She was one of the most enthusiastic people. She worked really good for me, and the girls really respected her a lot.”

The love Janessa put into her work at West Orange was reciprocated by those around her.

Following her death, there were two celebration-of-life events — one at the gym on campus and another in their hometown of

Key West. There wasn’t an empty seat in either house, Michelle said.

“We raised a good daughter; I had an amazing daughter,” she said.

“It just shows you the impact that she had on everybody,” Johnny said.

Janessa created many memories from her teaching work in the community. But her brother John remembers her personality.

He was the younger brother, and although she could pick on him whenever she wanted, no one else was allowed. It was that unforgettable personality that sticks with him.

against Melbourne last week, that magical moment from the game against East River is the peak of his short, but fun, stint with the team that started just after Thanksgiving.

Bryant, whose love of basketball is well known, thanks in part to his time playing the game in the Special Olympics, approached assistant coach Andy Rochon about the possibility of joining the team as a manager.

“I know Gavin’s passion for basketball, because I’ve seen him play with his team and things like that,” Rochon said. “We just wanted to make him a part of this team and see if he would want to do it. He was the one to tell us yes, so he kind of calls a few shots around here.”

Going into his first week as the team’s manager was nothing with which Bryant wasn’t familiar. He took over doing minor, yet important, jobs that would keep him busy during practices

and games. Keeping up with the team’s uniforms, keeping them hydrated and offering up support were just a few of Bryant’s duties.

Although the job in general was a simple one that brought a lot of joy into Bryant’s life, there was one thing that took some time to get use to: folding clothes.

“I have to carry the suits they wear — I don’t wash them, the head manager does that — and I fold them and put them in the container that breaks,” Bryant said. “I never knew how to fold shirts — we always hanged them up — so I’m kind of new at folding shirts.”

As the practices and games went on, Bryant continued to learn and pick up new managing skills while also learning more about the inner workings of basketball.

In that aspect of developing an understanding of how teams operate, Bryant learned one valuable lesson he said every new student manager should know.

“You knew when she walked into a room, because she was loud and if you didn’t like her or if she didn’t like you, you’d know that too,” said John, who graduated from West Orange in 2011.

“If she liked you, she would be the type of person that would do anything for you. If you were in a fight, she would be the first one there. If you were needing help, she would be the first one there.”

At the end of the night’s festivities, the Cavanzon family was both grateful, even if slightly exhausted.

“It’s overwhelming, but it’s heartfelt,” Michelle said.“There’s not enough thank yous.”

Although the season is over for the Knights’ basketball team, the things Bryant learned will still be getting a lot of use after he departs from Ocoee, and he still has the Special Olympics to look forward to later this year.

There, on the hardwood for his team, Bryant will look to take advantage of the on-the-court skills he picked up during the Knights’ practices. The hope is he can become the next big shooter on his Special Olympics team.

“I’m a fast shooter … I can almost beat 100% of the team, except for one person — Cooper (Siers),” Bryant said. “He can always beat me.”

That competitive spirit from the bench, which he brought to help make the Knights that much more fun to watch, will be missed by his fellow teammates and coaches, Rochon said.

“It’s been good, and he’s been really supportive of our team,” Rochon said. “We hope he learned a few things to get his confidence up to possibly be a manager later on in his life.”

As of now, the 20-year-old Bryant said after he graduates this spring the goal is to enter the workforce and find a job at either the local Party City or Publix.

Eventually, the ultimate goal is to become a masseuse — Bryant helps quell his father’s pain issues through massage, which he finds relaxing — or possible go into construction work, as Bryant considers himself a handson kind of guy.

But no matter what the future holds, Bryant said he never will forget his time with the Ocoee basketball team.

“I will really, really miss the players, the coaches and shooting half-court shots and just having fun,” Bryant said. “I will most miss having fun.”

he dream of a state final four is alive and well for CFCA (18-9) following its 78-41 thumping of Master’s Academy (18-8) in the Class 2A, Region 2 semifinal Feb. 21.

Led by senior Anterrius Washington’s team-high 28 points, the Eagles came right out of the gate with a 14-0 run. From there on out, the Patriots had no answer of their own.

Adding into the offensive onslaught were seniors Bryce Street and Jordan Preaster, who both picked up 16 points of their own.

The Eagles won’t have time to rest on their laurels, however, as they will host district foe Victory Christian Academy (20-7) in the regional final Tuesday, Feb. 26, after press time.

CFCA’s Anthony Campman and Jordan Preaster battled for the rebound.

In the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, The Winter Garden Times held annual subscription sales contests, and local children could win prizes for selling subscriptions to the local weekly newspaper.

In the Feb. 24, 1966, issue, an advertisement beckoned young sellers with the promise of a new bicycle if they sold 25 subscriptions or renewals.

Children who didn’t sell 25 still received $1 for every subscription they sold.

The Western Flyers were donated by the Western Auto associate store at 32 W. Plant St., in Winter Garden.
