he smell of barbecue drifted strong through the air in downtown Winter Garden on Feb. 13, where the city hosted the fifth annual Winter Garden Blues and BBQ festival.

Three Florida blues bands — the Betty Fox Band, the Damon Fowler Group and Selwyn Birchwood — took the stage throughout the evening. Nine vendors sold their fares, which included barbecue, beer, wine and roasted nuts.

Tri & Run of West Orange is accepting registration for its first Rock On Classic Trail Run 5K/10K, which will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Roper Ranch (Rock On Adventures), 17701 Old YMCA Road, Winter Garden.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

Sweet Jessie’s is, in fact, a namesake for Jessica. She and her husband went through “a million names” to find something that stuck and was personal so people could relate to it.

“Sweet Jessie just kind of had a ring to it, so we went with it and it’s been great; we love it,” she said.

“Ice cream puts smiles on people’s faces — that’s just what it does — and that’s why I’m in this business. If it didn’t do that, I probably wouldn’t be doing this.”

Pollack, owner of Sweet Jessie’s Homemade Ice Cream, just wants to make people smile.

“Ice cream puts smiles on people’s faces — that’s just what it does — and that’s why I’m in this business,” she said. “If it didn’t do that, I probably wouldn’t be doing this.”

It was only fitting that the grand opening of Sweet Jessie’s fell on Valentine’s Day — the sweetest day of the year. Balloon artists and face painters catered to the young guests while everyone socialized and enjoyed their first taste of the shop’s homemade ice cream.

“We have 200-plus recipes, and we change up the different flavors biweekly, so every couple of weeks, we’ll have different flavors come out,” Pollack said.

“We can have special requests and make whatever (customers) request, so it’s really flexible.”

Pollack, who grew up in Maryland and moved to Ocoee twoand-one-half years ago, originally started working in the ice cream business when she was 9 years old, when an ice cream shop opened across from her house.

“Every day I would be out there after my sports and get my ice cream, and I became really good friends with the owners,” she said. “I would help them out whenever, and I’ve done this for 20-something years now. I love it, I absolutely love it.”

When she and her family made the move to Florida, Pollack saw a need for homemade ice cream, so she decided to open her shop.

She and her husband, Doug, looked for the perfect location for months before they finally found

it on North Clarke Road, next to Publix.

At any one time, Sweet Jessie’s will serve between 30 and 40 different flavors of ice cream, with unique flavors such as Blueberry Pancake, Zombie — a mix of chocolate, peanut butter and cookies — and Cookie Monster.

The shop also offers specialty milkshakes, banana splits and New Orleans-style shaved ice.

Although the shop only recently opened, Pollack said the community response has been overwhelming. Sometimes people have just come by while she was working to get the shop up and running and reached out with words of encouragement.

“The family and friend support that we have is crazy how they have come and supported me,” she said. “But the community has been amazing. We have been on the Ocoee and Winter Garden Rants, Raves and Reviews Facebook pages, and people have been supportive and excited about this, so it makes me so anxious, happy and excited to get this thing rolling.”

The passion for outreach in the community is reciprocated.

Although she loves the ice cream business and making people happy, she is also excited about the prospect of giving back to the community.

“I feel like I have such a great opportunity to do that in a small community here in Ocoee,” she said. “Once I get up and opened and get stuff down, I’m (looking forward to) being able to reach out and support other local businesses or the schools and Little Leagues and whatever we can.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis. About one in five people infected with the virus show symptoms. Severe complica-

Winter Garden commissioners welcomed the future of the city at the commission meeting Feb. 11, as they formally adopted the State Road 429 Master Plan.

The joint plan between the cities of Ocoee and Winter Garden addresses three interchanges, West Road, Plant-Franklin and State Road 50, and the corridor connections to downtown Winter Garden and Ocoee.

The plan foresees growth in these key interchanges once the completed Wekiva Parkway connects State Road 429 to Interstate 4 in Seminole County. One of the goals of the plan is to make these places destinations along S.R. 429, not merely stopping points.

In Winter Garden, the plan looks to make the Plant Street corridor that connects S.R. 429 to Dillard Street more appealing, as it becomes the “front door” of downtown. The corridor will take on a similar character to that of the rest of Plant Street, adding pedestrian-friendly features, as well as streetscape similar to that seen on the rest of Plant Street.

The East Bay District is also planned to have more multi-use development that complements Plant Street.

The Plant-Franklin interchange will become a center of employment, supporting office, residential and retail services with pedestrian-friendly design.

Commissioners also approved the first reading of an ordinance that puts a moratorium on the processing of development and building permit applications until Aug. 31 for the area of Plant Street between Dillard Street and S.R. 429. This will allow city officials to come up with design guidelines on buildings and development along the road. The second reading is scheduled for Feb. 25.

Mother, daughter killed in Pine Hills A mother and her 16-year-old daughter were found dead Feb. 15 inside a Pine Hills home.

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports, at 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to a 911 call from a man who arrived at the home at 905 Santa Barbara Road and found two deceased residents.

CHICKENS IN BACKYARDS

City Manager Mike Bollhoefer asked City Attorney Kurt Ardaman to get the commissioners a copy of the Orlando or Maitland ordinance regarding chickens in backyards, to see whether the commission would like to adopt a version of the ordinance in Winter Garden.

Commissioner Bobby Olszewski said Winter Garden residents already have approached him about the issue.

Commissioners said the feedback they had received were in favor of chickens being permitted, citing the ability to produce organic eggs and the benefits of the animals for children with disabilities.

Bollhoefer said the ordinances likely would provide exceptions for homeowners associations to supersede city rules on chickens.

purchasing the restaurant, located at 42 W. Plant Street in downtown Winter Garden.

“It was a price I just couldn’t say no to,” he said.

“I hired a broker to facilitate the deal. The (potential buyer) backed out.”

Because Scorsone had signed a contract with the broker, he decided to keep the restaurant on the market to see what happens.

He said he is not actively selling the business, and he will not negotiate on the $998,500 price.

“This is my home; this is my community,” Scorsone said. “This is where I choose to be, and I’m not going anywhere.”

He opened Michael’s Ali Coal Fired Pizza in the Plant Street Market, just down the road, after the owners repeatedly approached him about opening a pizza place there. He did not want to put a business in place that would compete with the WGPC, so he decided to offer a variation of the pizza he was already selling.

Scorsone bought WGPC in 2007.

The price is for the business only and does not include the 4,200-squarefoot space in the Roper Building, which is owned by Marc Grimes and Ann Ellis.

Thompson said he has been approached constantly by residents who are eager to find out when the store will be open.

“I’ve never had such a reaction to one of our stores,” he said. The community out there is so tightly knit, and they get so excited about stuff. They are making us feel very welcome.”

By mid-March, shoppers will be able to walk along a collection of booths rented by individuals who showcase their own flare and style in antique and vintage wares.

“We like to divide up stores so shoppers can experience multiple different creative visions in one place,” Thompson said. “We curate a lot of vintage-inspired décor merchandise that goes well with vintage decorations.”

The Winter Garden store will be similar to the one in the Winter Park Village. It also will sell its line of paint and refinishing products.

“Basically, everything that people expect from Adjectives and have grown to love at the other stores, we will be bringing to Winter Garden as well,” Thompson said.

Behind the brown paper that covers the front windows, Thompson’s team is working on the cosmetics of the interior. The wall partitions are already up.

The owner is planning a soft opening in the next three weeks.

“People will know because the paper will be down and the doors will be open and people will be welcome to come in,” Thompson said.

Business hours haven’t been set, but Thompson plans to keep the shop open seven days a week, with later evening hours and earlier Saturday hours because of the nature of downtown shoppers.

“We want to be there to serve people and will be open when people are having fun,” he said.

“We want to be part of the fun.”

Remembering ‘Eljay’ The communities of Ocoee Middle School, the Ocoee Bulldogs and beyond have been taken aback by the loss of Lavardo ‘Eljay’ Fisher, 13.

morning last week at Ocoee Middle School, but the crowd was largest on Tuesday.

As the campus community was reeling from the news that beloved classmate and student Lavardo “Eljay” Fisher, 13, had been accidentally shot on Sunday, Feb. 7, and later passed away the evening of Feb. 8, there seemed to be a gravitational pull each morning toward the flagpole in the middle of campus.

It happened each day that week, organic and unplanned — but the crowd was largest on that Tuesday morning, after news of Lavardo’s passing had circulated.

Dr. Mark Shanoff, the school’s principal, estimated the entire campus — 1,400 students, along with faculty and staff — was present that morning.

ed, others were silent and many embraced one another.

The gathering was just one measure of the impact that the exuberant young man with the wit beyond his years and the contagious smile had had on the Ocoee community.

“It’s an amazing experience, for a principal for such a large middle school, to see the closeness of a community in just those few moments before school where everybody was just going to come together,” Shanoff said. “It’s a testament to the type of kid that Lavardo is.”

WELL-ROUNDED YOUNG MAN

Dealing with the loss of any child is difficult for a community, but with Lavardo, it is perhaps doubly so because of just how well-liked he was.

The outgoing youth was not tied to one group of friends — indeed, Lavardo’s involvement in Ocoee Bulldogs youth football, student council, band and honors classes made him a friend to many.

Polite and well-spoken, he is described as having been charismatic — and funny.

“He was a jokester who kept things light and kept things above board,” Shanoff said. “He was so well-raised that he just always knew where the boundaries were.”

That sentiment — that Lavardo could be funny while also housing a keen awareness of when to turn it off — was something his teachers echoed.

“He is a character,” said Jacob Pickett, the band director at Ocoee

been a challenge not only for students at Ocoee Middle or teammates for the Bulldogs, but also for the adults who were a part of his daily life.

“You have to be able to handle everything, to process everything, while you’re helping students process,” Pickett said, reflecting on the challenges he and his colleagues encountered last week.

“Watching the students deal with this situation, and you watch the hurt they’ve gone through, it’s very difficult.”

To help with that grieving process, Orange County Public Schools had grief counselors on campus last week to be available to students. On social media, including Instagram, students began to use the hashtag “#PrayForLavardo.”

“Just among themselves, I can hear them in the commons or even coming into class, telling stories and sharing memories they have of Lavardo,” Skeens said. “Everybody was affected by

this. Everybody felt it.”

Wanting to go a step further, Shanoff dedicated the school’s boys and girls basketball games that Wednesday to Lavardo’s memory and offered to pay the admission for any student who would like to attend. There, players for both the Cardinals and the visiting teams from Wolf Lake Middle wore black socks and a moment of silence was observed before each game.

The Ocoee Bulldogs organization has banded together to start a GoFundMe to raise donations to help the family with any expenses. An already-scheduled flag football event Feb. 12 became an opportunity for teammates and the community to come together.

“We are ‘one Bulldog,’” Woods said, explaining that Lavardo and many of his teammates have been playing together since early in grade school. “They do everything together.”

A viewing service has been set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, and a Life Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. the next day. Both services will take place at New Destiny Christian Center, 505 E. McCormick Road, Apopka.

Attendees are encouraged to wear bow ties in Lavardo’s honor. It is an appropriately unique way to remember a unique young man — one whose respectful and positive demeanor left a lasting impression.

“As the father of a daughter, Lavardo is absolutely the type of kid that you want your daughter to bring home,” Shanoff said.

became, as Shanoff put it, “a phenomenal drummer.” “(Lavardo) really began to think about music as much more than just a hobby,” Pickett said. “He worked on being someone that is a musician that is not just about himself. … He was really starting to develop as a great percussionist.”

An aspiring musician who also ran track for the school, teachers noted that Lavardo brought an unique enthusiasm to the classroom. It seemed to showcase an awareness of the opportunities that might be available to him if he was successful in school — something Shanoff and his faculty attributed to a strong upbringing at home. “(Lavardo) was full of questions if he didn’t understand something and he was always participating,” said Brittany Skeens, his geometry teacher.

Lavardo would often double as an unofficial “teacher’s assistant,” helping other students who might not have grasped a concept.

His intelligence benefited him on the football field, as well.

Ocoee Bulldogs Junior Midgets coach Lo Woods said although Lavardo’s smile could light up a room, he was a fierce linebacker who captained his team’s defense and grasped schematic concepts quickly.

“With Lavardo, we would just give a signal, and he would get them in the huddle and tell them what to do, because he was so smart,” Woods said.

1935: George Walker was an avid sports fan, with a special passion for baseball. New playing fields were part of the city improvements Walker envisioned early in his term as mayor. When complete, Walker’s new sports complex featured grandstand seating for 700 baseball lovers, with portable bleachers providing seating for hundreds more.

1918: Born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1894, George Walker married Florida-born Mattie Mills shortly before being drafted into the Army during World War I. He began his enlistment period with the 156th Depot Brigade at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

He later joined the Company C 318 Flag Signal Battalion, working with private industry to perfect radio tubes at a signal laboratory at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. The rudimentary “radio telephones” developed at the lab were employed in Europe in 1918.

After serving overseas from July 14, 1918, through March 22, 1919, Walker was honorably discharged April 3, 1919, with the rank of sergeant.

1920: After World War I, George Walker and his young wife moved to Winter Garden, where Walker established the Walker Electric Company and Appliance Store at 28 W. Plant St. From the store he originally shared with the Winter Garden Press, operated by Joe Valdes, Walker enticed residents to try out his “new-fangled” lighting and appliances.

Right place, right time, right man An exhibit at the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation Research and Education Center celebrates the legacy of George Walker.

WINTER GARDEN Through a new exhibit, the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation Research and Education Center is paying tribute to one of the most important men in the city’s history.

The exhibit, which runs through March, celebrates the life and work of former Mayor George Walker. Walker, who moved to the area with his wife, Mattie, in 1919, opened the Walker Electric Co. and Appliance Store at 26 W. Plant St. In 1933, when Mayor Thomas Mann resigned, Walker was appointed to the mayoral position; he was elected officially that October.

In his seven years as mayor, Walker mastered the art of securing federal funds for local projects. By the end of the decade, he had received more than $250,000 for the city ($4.4 million in today’s value). The projects funded by that money included a new city hall, a fire station and a sports complex, along with improved streets and new sidewalks. Encouraged by the popularity of bass fishing in Lake Apopka, Walker also constructed a substantial recreational park along the shores of Lake Apopka. The 30-acre park included a municipal swimming pool, seawall, community hall, gymnasium/auditorium, fishing pier, trailer park and boat basins with covered boathouses.

persistence, works hard to provide something that was needed,” said Jim Crescitelli, program director. “We say in our Citizen Heroes presentations that ‘they saw a need and they worked to fill the need and make things better for their community.’”

Today, little is known about the man behind the Depression-era city amenities. Following his service as mayor, Walker returned his attention to his business, his orange grove and his family. He died in 1955 at age 61. The single site that currently bears his name is Walker Field sports complex.

“The architectural legacy bequeathed to us by Mayor Walker is still mostly intact,” Crescitelli said. “It testifies to Winter Garden’s dedication toward keeping these projects viable — either in their original intent or as repurposed structures. To better appreciate our heritage, we help people to know the history behind these projects and how they are still in use today.”

Fight for Lake Roberts preservation hits Web Shelby Kolar’s petition to save woods and wetlands around Walker’s Pond Rural Settlement has more than 500 signatures.

For now, the enclave of unincorporated Orange County near the convergence of Winter Garden, Ocoee and Windermere contains Lake Roberts and, to the lake’s east, Walker’s Pond Road, part of Walker’s Pond Rural Settlement.

At the end of that road is a significant portion of woods and wetlands that stretches north to Stoneybrook West Parkway, which locals and hundreds of supporters around the world are hoping to keep so.

Shelby Kolar, who is familiar with the potential for green spaces to be developed based on residence in Windermere Country Club less than a mile away, started a change.org petition titled, “Save The Woods and Wetlands of Lake Roberts and Walker’s Pond Rural Settlement.”

She and her comrades hope the addressees — the Orange County Board of County Commissioners — will agree that the area of about 40 acres is important to preserve as one of few remaining green spaces in the immediate vicinity.

“We want the woods and wetlands to remain untouched and Walker’s Pond Rural Settlement to remain a rural settlement, which means only one house per acre, not the multiple houses per acre that the developer is proposing,” Kolar said. “No one who lives in the area wants a subdivision on that property. The only person who would benefit is the developer.”

Kolar names Robert Zlatkiss as the potential developer in her petition. In her petition, Kolar wrote of Zlatkiss having intentions to get the land rezoned and annexed into Winter Garden to build a subdivision, including

lakefront homes on Lake Roberts and possibly a road from the parkway south through wetlands.

But Kolar would prefer some form of preserve, perhaps even to a formal extent similar to Oakland and Tibet-Butler preserves. Still, the willingness to allow one-acre lots remains, which could still be a possible compromise that still protects a breadth of local wildlife, she said.

“There’s plenty of different species of birds — I know people have seen eagles flying over there in the past,” Kolar said. “I know at one point there was a nest … gopher tortoises; just a lot of variety of wildlife, and … just all the little pockets of wild areas are being developed, and we would like for the county to consider that the wildlife need places to live.”

problems such as coyotes and other species being pushed out of the woods and into the streets when they have nowhere else to go, she said.

“I’m not opposed to all development,” she said. “I want our little area to remain quiet and peaceful. We need our little pockets of green space here and there to be protected. I just hope Orange County officials will consider that and do the right thing.”

Zlatkiss did not respond to repeated attempts seeking comment.

What some might not know is he has Donut King doughnuts brought in every morning. My brother is up from Jensen Beach. He follows this page and was dying to try one of those maple bacon doughnuts. So we headed down to Get Hooked Bait and Tackle and Marine.

He is located in Ocoee. As luck would have it, when we got there, he had three maple bacon doughnuts left. What we didn’t know was that he has a little diner inside. Maddie is the new lady brought in to bring this little diner to life. They have a simple menu for breakfast and lunch items. I ordered the breakfast steak-and-egg sandwich. It was amazing! Some regulars were sitting at the counter and told me about an amazing breakfast burrito that Maddie makes from scratch.

I will be trying that tomorrow.

Following the dinner, everyone met in the auditorium to hear from special guests from Orange County Public Schools and see performances by West Orange’s AFJROTC Drill Team, Warriorettes Dance Team, Jazz Band, Bel Canto Choir and Drama Troupe 1983.

The principals shared a few memories of their time as a Warrior during the ceremony, too.

Worsham, an original teacher at West Orange, remembers how it felt when the air-conditioner didn’t work at the windowless campus, and he recalled the shooting death of Principal Ray Screws in 1977. Worsham is proud of the school he once led, which continues to instill excellence with teachers who care.

“Those early years had the magic that made West Orange,” he said.

Preisser said he was blessed as a principal to include the students of Winter Garden, Ocoee and Pine Hills and the sense of community at the school. He was the leader when a tornado struck Winter Garden in February 1998, and he opened the school as a Red Cross shelter for a week.

Armbruster, his wife, Sandi, who works at the school, and their daughter, Jennifer, are all West Orange graduates. He remembers playing soccer as a student and later serving as soccer coach.

“A lot of what I do today I learned from Gary (Preisser),” Armbruster said.

He also admitted to digging a hole at the 50-yard line of the football field, before it was changed to synthetic turf, and burying a time capsule that included a Class of 1979 T-shirt, a shirt from his last year as principal and a letter to God. Little did he know that two years later, under Buckman’s leadership, the grass would be removed to make way for the artificial turf.

Buckman called Armbruster and asked him what he should do with the time capsule. It was reburied at the 50-yard line.

Buckman helped design the new school and served there upon completion.

He said Karen Whiddon, one of the original teachers, will be in his heart forever for one simple act: When he first arrived at West Orange, she asked him not to put his desk in the same place where Ray Screws had sat when he was

Larsen was principal when the school received its first A rating in the state. In 2012, he handed a diploma to his son when he graduated.

“This is a family; it’s home,” Larsen said. “(When you take over as principal), you stand on the shoulders of those who went before you.”

Szcinski has guided West Orange into the 21st century by introducing laptops to students and providing instruction digitally. He will turn 40 — the same age as the school — later this year. He is grateful to be at an institution with as much school and community spirit as West Orange.

“The people who graced West Orange are the ones who carried on the tradition,” he said.

Of the four remaining principals, Lester Dabbs died in 2015, Screws died in 1977, Tony Krapf is teaching math in North Carolina and will retire in April after 52 years in education, and Sarah Jane Turner lives in Orlando.

taurant The Big Easy celebrated its fifth anniversary on Fat Tuesday — a Mardi Gras celebration in and of itself — but the eatery’s newly completed renovations were the icing on the cake.

The eatery recently transformed part of its space into a relaxed-atmosphere lounge reminiscent of a sports bar. Four 10-foot-tall garage doors have been installed and are opened up during business hours to give the area an open-air patio feel. Additionally, part of the restaurant now acts as a coffee bar by day and a cocktail bar by night.

This isn’t the first major renovation to come to fruition for The Big Easy, though. When owners Morgan and Misti Jimenez decided to open the authentic Cajun-style restaurant five years ago, it started off small, taking space that used to be occupied by a Starbucks.

“I was born and raised in Houma, Louisiana, and had lots of family recipes,” Morgan said.

“We have a wide selection on the menu too, because I’ve got ribs, meat and pasta. But we want to focus on the people who really like authentic Cajun food, because that’s what we do.”

It expanded its square footage 18 months ago after taking over the old barbecue joint next door.

Now that it is bigger and consists of both sides, Morgan wanted to utilize the patio on the original side and open it more. Renovations began in December and

It’ll be a little quieter now (on the larger side) for the customers who just want to eat, Morgan said.

“We’re going to feature beignets and coffee, because in New Orleans one of the famous places

is called Cafe Du Monde and it’s been there for about 120 years, and they specialize in coffee and beignets,” he said. “We’re going to keep it open for lunch as well.”

Despite there being two sides with slightly different atmospheres, Morgan said it is still one total restaurant and guests can get the same food from either side.

talized his bird-carving hobbies and met up with other musicians who encouraged his musical side.

A red-tail hawk carved by Scholz is currently in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He has been featured in exhibits around the world and also travels often for book signings and lectures. But he is eager to bring a love of art to the Windermere and Central Florida communities.

ALANA O’HERN

Walk Windermere’s Main Street, and you might not notice a small storefront where Alana O’Hern is painting.

The artist primarily paints with a palette knife, but experiments with all sorts of painting. On a recent painting, she used an acrylic paint and tissue paper to create texture in her work.

She doesn’t limit herself to people, but people have always been the subject of her work, ever since she began drawing years ago.

“I was always just fascinated with people and faces,” O’Hern said.

She currently is working on a painting of David Bowie, which she will complete at the Windermere Art Affair. She’s done paintings of Jimi Hendrix, which sold quickly.

When she paints, she tries to capture the soul of her subject, and she finds that comes out through color.

O’Hern, married to professional golfer Nick O’Hern, used her time traveling with him to work on her art. One time, she tried a self portrait with a palette knife, and she fell in love with painting. From there, she got a steady flow of commissions.

While being part of the Central Florida community, O’Hern struggled to find something creative to do.

But in Windermere, she found her niche with painting.

NOREEN COUP

Five years ago, Dr. Phillips resident Noreen Coup attended a palette knife workshop and fell in love with the work. Now, most of the works she does is with palette knife oils.

She uses a limited palette of eight colors, and takes the palette knife to mix and blend the colors, as well as create sharp edges and details in the painting.

“For me, it’s a much looser style of painting,” Coup said. “I find brush work more confining. It seems to be much freer for me.”

Coup works with landscapes and seascapes, as well as florals.

Coup is part of McRae Studios, a co-op of 21 artists, where she has a permanent studio. She also teaches classes at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, and she will begin teaching at Crealde’s Winter Garden campus soon. She is relocating to Winter Garden in the next few months, where she will do private and semi-private lessons from her home. She also occasionally teaches classes through the Winter Garden Art Association.

To call Floyd Scholz passionate about birds would be an understatement.

His home studio is where Scholz, who has carved birds for 48 years, blends his passion for birds and art. A road sign placed on the wall reads, “Bird Lovers Lane,” and his calendar prominently displays birds.

Musical instruments in the room also harken to Scholz’s fascination for music. He thinks different forms of art, music, paintings, sculptures and food allow one to experience art through different senses — sight, hearing and taste.

So it just makes sense that he likes birds.

“The interesting thing about birds and music is that birds as a subject for art are varied — they’re beautiful to look at, and they sing beautifully,” Scholz said. “So birds capture all of those nuances — and they taste good.”

Scholz is among 50 artists who will be featured at the first Windermere Art Affair.

Scholz carves wood called tupelo into various birds — he is known for his focus on the birds of prey, such as eagles, hawks, falcons and owls. Creating this art requires extensive research on the birds, and from this knowledge Scholz has written seven books.

Scholz grew up in a family of people who enjoyed the outdoors and began carving at 10 years old. His uncle was a machinist who was a gifted woodworker.

When he died suddenly of cancer, Scholz’s aunt gave him some of his uncle’s unfinished carvings, and it was the beginning of a career.

For a while, carving was little more than a profitable hobby.

A reigning NCAA champion in the decathlon, Scholz was more focused on his athletic career and training for the 1980 Olympics being held in Moscow. But the Carter administration’s boycott left Scholz scrambling to figure out a new direction for his life. He landed in Vermont, where he revi-

ll seven seniors for West Orange baseball have signed with college programs.

Among them is one of the top pitching prospects in the nation.

All of which is well and good — a credit to both the program at West Orange and each player’s respective travel organizations, where most recruiting now takes place.

Just don’t expect to overhear these Warriors talking too much about anything other than the season at hand.

“When (the calendar) goes from summer ball and travel ball to high school ball, the goal and the mindset changes,” said senior infielder Kole Enright, a Stetson signee.

Indeed, led by the program’s senior class, the varsity season has become a time of the year these Warriors cherish.

“This is what’s fun,” said senior first baseman Nathan Schreckengost, a Landers University signee.

“This is when everybody on the field is playing for each other.”

Lauren Mathis Junior pitcher Lauren Mathis has recorded impressive statistics through the first four games of the season, including 40 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched, for West Orange (5-0 as of Feb. 14).

Mathis has verbally committed to the University of Georgia and plans to sign next year.

What are you most looking forward to this season?

I think postseason and playoffs, to see how far we get.

The team we have has really good chemistry, and I think we’ll make it to states this year.

When did you get started in softball?

I got started when I was 7, and we moved to a different house here. Our neighbors played softball at Windermere Little League, so they kind of got me started doing that.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Tacos, but not just any tacos — my mom’s tacos. They’re so good, and I would eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner every single day.

What are your plans for after high school?

I’m going to the University of Georgia on a scholarship, I’m verbally committed, and I’ll sign next year. I don’t really know what I want to do in college yet, though.

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a panda, because they’re my favorite animals and they’re really chill. They just chill and eat bamboo.

What’s the most rewarding thing about softball for you?

Definitely going out with the teammates after a big win, getting dinner and celebrating with them.

Do you have a favorite quote?

It’s a Bible verse, Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.” I like the idea that He gives you strength on and off the field, every moment of every day.

Who is your inspiration?

My inspiration has to be my dad, because he’s gotten me this far and he got me recruited. He did everything for me. He’s just a really great person.

What is your dream job?

Probably being a psychologist or a therapist. I’m really interested in cognitive stuff and how people think.

Who is your favorite musical artist at the moment?

My favorite artist would definitely have to be Bryson Tiller, and my favorite song by him is “Don’t.” I just really like his music, and a lot of the stuff he writes about relates to my life.

Williams always will be known as the first West Orange Warrior to suit up for a Major League Baseball game.

As of Feb. 12, he’ll now also be known as the first Warrior with his number retired at his alma mater.

Head coach Jesse Marlo and the West Orange program invited Williams, who is continuing a rehabilitation process after a shoulder injury ended his season in 2015, back to his old stomping grounds to celebrate the retiring of his No. 9 jersey before the Warriors’ game Friday against Jacksonville’s Trinity Christian.

Williams was presented with a plaque and also was present for the unveiling of his banner with his name and number placed along the outfield wall under the field’s scoreboard.

To Marlo, bestowing the honor on Williams, who was a key part of a particularly successful run for the program at West Orange between 2007 and 2010, was an easy call.

“It was a no-brainer — 40 years the school has been around and he is the first guy to play in the Major Leagues,” Marlo said.

“He was a great player when he was here, and I’m sure he’s got a lot more good days ahead of him with the Yankees.”

For Williams, who graduated from West Orange in 2010 before being drafted by the Yankees that summer, it was a humbling occasion.

“It’s pretty surreal,” Williams said. “I was just on the field (at West Orange) not too long ago.

It’s a tremendous honor.”

whirlwind for the outfielder hailing from Winter Garden — starting with the news that one of his lifelong dreams would be coming true.

“Just telling my family, ‘Come to Baltimore’ — that’s what really got to me,” Williams said, referring to his first game June 12 against the Baltimore Orioles.

More than just being called up to the big club, Williams played in that first game and — in just his second at-bat — homered.

“I blacked out,” Williams said with a laugh. “I remember telling myself, ‘Try not to sprint around the bases.’”

As a native of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, who spent the majority of his youth in Winter Garden, there was a bit of an adjustment for Williams when he arrived in New York City once the Yankees returned home from Baltimore.

“It was kind of my first taste of the big city,” Williams said.

“I rode the subway (to Yankee Stadium), played the games, and after the games, I rode the subway back home. It was neat.”

PINSTRIPE PRIDE

In eight games with the Yankees before an injury ended his season, Mason Williams put up some encouraging numbers.

Williams played well in eight games for the Yankees, batting .286 with three doubles and a home run in addition to some impressive catches in center field. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury cut short Williams’ time with the big club. For now, he is hard at work to get another taste of the big show. “(It’s a) roller coaster,” Williams said. “There’s ups and there’s downs, and it’s just about how you take the downs.”

It goes like this: Travel ball is a time to be recruited, but spring means business — and representing for the school and its community. It’s a noble mindset — and one that isn’t always the case.

“It’s not like that all the time,” head coach Jesse Marlo said.

“It takes a special group. … You have years where you’ve got guys (who) are committed, and they’re just worried about scouts in the stands. …

“I always say I feel like the guys (who) are still here are ‘program guys,’” he said. “The program is bigger than themselves. Those are guys we want — the guys (who) want to live, breathe and die orange and blue.”

TIGHT-KNIT AND TOP TIER

The dynamic the Class of 2016 has cultivated is due, in part, to a longstanding familiarity among themselves.

“We’ve all played together since, probably, seventh grade,” Enright said. “We’re a pretty tight-knit group.”

During those years at the varsity level, this class has played through a relatively tough stretch where — in one of the region’s toughest districts — strong programs at Olympia and Apopka have kept West Orange out of the playoffs.

The Titans, whom the Warriors have not beat while this class has been on campus (0-6 since 2013), have spent time in each of the past two seasons ranked No. 1 in the nation, and Apopka (which the Warriors have defeated three times in their past 10 meetings) has seemed to have West Orange’s number — particularly in the district tournament.

This year, the district adds Lake

Brantley — another powerhouse.

But don’t think these Warriors are feeling sorry for themselves just because it will be a tall task to advance out of the district.

“You always love playing great competition,” Schreckengost said.

“The best teams go through the best teams and you have to beat the best to be the best — we take that challenge head on. Ever since I’ve been on varsity, we have not (beaten) Olympia. That’s something I take to heart every day.”

RETURN OF ‘PUDGE’

This year’s club plays with an enthusiasm, energy and passion that reminds Marlo of some of his more dominant teams from the late 2000s — and that’s no coincidence. Starting with last season, the Warriors brought on former star catcher Michael Albaladejo, who played his college baseball at FAU before playing in the Washington Nationals’ farm system, to be an assistant coach.

The effects of the return of “Pudge,” as he was called during his playing days, have been palpable.

“People that have been around knew we probably had the craziest and rowdiest bunch when (Albaladejo) was playing,” Marlo said. “It probably has a little bit to do with it, him being back here.

We love having him.”

Of course, there is one achievement the Warriors — even when Alabadejo and his star-studded teammates were on campus from 2006 to 2009 — have yet to taste: playing in a Final Four. Though it will be a tough road, there is a belief among this year’s team that anything can happen.

“That’s what we’ve been trying to do ever since we got to this school,” Schreckengost said. “To get past our district, to get into regionals and hopefully get past regionals — that’d be huge for us.”

“That’s kind of how highschool sports are in general: You can play it and only do it while it’s in season, but if you want to be any good at it, it’s pretty much a year-round commitment,” said Olympia wrestling coach Jeremy Bourst.

During the regular season, the boys practice five days a week. There might be a meet or tournament every weekend — sometimes more than one. The regular season is preceded by the preseason, which is dedicated to getting the wrestlers into a shape conducive to training hard on the mat without injury.

Training typically starts at the beginning of the school year, and each wrestler will weigh in. They’re only allowed to lose so much weight based on the amount of body fat they have; therefore, each wrestler has a unique weight-loss plan.

“We do provide them with healthy eating plans and talk often about nutrition,” said West Orange High wrestling coach Kristen Iannuzzi. “We also talk with the strength-and-conditioning coach about weight-loss goals, but whether they follow that is up to them.”

In addition to nutrition and conditioning, Bourst added one of the main issues is hydration.

“A lot of kids have bad habits as far as drinking caffeinated beverages like teas and sodas, which is the absolute worst thing they can do,” Bourst said.

Hydration also comes into play when helping wrestlers regulate their weight — something they

need to watch like a hawk, especially when it comes to meets and tournaments. Iannuzzi tells her wrestlers to “flood themselves with water” and get toxins out of their systems by drinking a gallon of water each day.

At West Orange, wrestlers train under Iannuzzi but first work with their strength-and-conditioning coach to get into shape.

They alternate between distance running and short sprints and incorporate wrestling drills.

“What (our strength and conditioning coach) has really been doing recently is having us sprint three quarters of a lap to get our heart rate up, jog the last part, then repeat the whole process,” said junior Tyler Montes, a member of the West Orange wrestling team. “It gets our heart rates to go up and then back down.”

But aside from the grueling

conditioning and training they put in — along with watching their diet, water intake and weight — many of them are able to remain focused on their academics and work hard both on and off the mat.

After the regular season is over, training and conditioning may last through the end of the school year and over the summer. Iannuzzi said the more wrestlers can train properly, the better they will perform in the long run.

“It’s by far the most demanding sport that someone can participate in in high school,” Bourst said. “They’re taking a pounding in there, wrestling each other every day. But it’s (also) one of the best sports there is, because if you can do this, you can do anything.”

Then, pour syrup mixture into the bowl with the eggs. Stir well. Add egg mixture, apples & raisins to dry ingredients and blend.

Let this sit and thicken a few minutes.

Meanwhile, use a little butter olive oil to lightly grease a cookie sheet. Pour the batter onto the middle of the cookie sheet. Using a spatula carefully spread the batter evenly from the middle to the outer edges of the baking sheet.

A little butter oil on your spatula will help (if needed) to spread the batter more easily. Bake at 350 for approximately 15 minutes.

He nearly completed the set when Cortni suggested he sell it.

It was a hit, so Bryan began building tables.

When the Glovers posted photos of Bryan’s work on Facebook, the response was overwhelming.

“It blew up,” said Cortni, who manages the orders side of Glover Custom Woodwork — what the Glovers named their budding business.

Referrals have kept the business going strong, through both word of mouth and social media.

Now, when Bryan comes home for work, he heads to the garage to work on his orders, resulting in many late nights. He calls himself a perfectionist, as he continues to examine each piece and make sure it is perfect up until the moment of delivery. He hopes that one day he can move the operation out of his garage and into a shop of his own.

“Honestly, I didn’t think it was going to pick up like it has in the past year,” Bryan said.

He mostly gets requests for tables, but he is able to build all

sorts of things. He currently is building a frame for a customer’s television. He often builds shelves on which his customers can organize their belongings. Customers also have asked him to build an entertainment center.

Once, a customer had an autographed AC/DC guitar, and he wanted Bryan to create a shadowbox coffee table to display it.

The photograph of the completed project got more than 700 views on Facebook.

Recently, Bryan created a dining table that had a medieval look to it. But most people order pieces that have a “rustic, country look.”

“The look is in right now,” Cortni said. “Even people that aren’t necessarily ‘country.’ I mean, if you walk in Old Time Pottery or Hobby Lobby, everything is the western, rustic chic look.”

Everything Bryan creates starts from a full sheet of plywood, so he is able to customize each order based on the customer’s desires, which he believes sets him apart from box stores.

Customers can customize the dimensions of pieces, as well as the finishes.

As for the cornhole set — Bryan still doesn’t have one of his own.

Couple bakes up sweet new business From individual-sized cakes to 10-inch familyfeeders, this new DP shop is all about the bundts.

“I can’t say no to no sugar,” Pulcini said, who once attended pastry school and was impressed by the quality she found at the store.

Pulcini is one of the many who have been drawn to Nothing Bundt Cakes’ newest location, which opened Jan. 8 on Sand Lake Road.

As the name implies, the store sells bundt cakes of four different sizes, from the bite-sized bundtini to the large bundt cakes that come in eight- and 10-inch varieties. There are also 10 different flavors of bundt cakes — nine classic flavors and one seasonal flavor that rotates each month.

Each cake is topped with a creamcheese frosting petal. “(It’s) the heartwarming, brings you back to grandma’s food,” said Melissa Albert, operator of the Sand Lake location. “It gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you walk in here. You get to pick out a bundt cake, and you feel the atmosphere of the store is welcoming.”

one in the office, Albert calls it “one-stop shopping.”

The store has 12 to 16 employees on staff at a time, who make the cakes at the store.

Nothing Bundt Cakes is a company based in Texas, with other locations in Florida, including Jacksonville and Winter Park.

The franchise is owned by Robert and Teresa Shuffield, who hope to open more franchises in the Central Florida area.

“We’ve been wanting to get on Sand Lake for years. Not necessarily as this concept, but some concept,” Robert Shuffield said.

They decided to go with the Nothing Bundt Cakes concept because they felt it fit in perfectly with the neighborhood, as well as the surrounding Dr. Phillips and Windermere areas.

Albert was hired as the store operator.

“It was kind of a happy accident,” said Albert, whose background is in food, beverage and events. “I kind of just fell into it.

I wasn’t really looking to make a career move, but when the opportunity presented itself, it seemed too perfect not to make the move.

I took a leap of faith, and it ended up being perfect.”
