A 15-year-old Windermere teen died from injuries sustained in a Feb. 11 jet-ski accident on Lake Whitney.

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports, Nicolas Lott and another teen were riding on jet skis at about 3:09 p.m. on the lake behind the home at 1420 Lake Whitney Drive, when Lott crashed into a nearby dock.

However, Sheriff’s Office reports state the other teen recounted two versions of the incident. Officer Stephen Leger’s report stated the teen said the two boys were on separate jet skis, and he saw Lott riding too close to a dock and crash. Deputy Sheriff Daniel Carpinello stated the teen told him they were on the same jet ski when it suddenSEE TEEN PAGE 2

ly turned off and lost steering power. The teen jumped off the vehicle, but Lott was still on it when it crashed into a nearby dock.

Lott sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was transported by Orange County Fire Rescue via helicopter to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, where he died a few hours later.

Lott was a student at Windermere High. Principal Douglas Guthrie reached out to parents via social media to share the news.

“I want to let you know how deeply saddened we are to learn about the death of one of our students as a result of an accident over the weekend,” Guthrie wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they go through this difficult time. Students can have varied reactions to the death of a peer. Any reaction is normal in the grief process and I encourage you to openly discuss with your child their feelings and reaction.”

Additionally, Guthrie said, there are grief counselors available on campus for students and staff if they need support or would like to talk to someone. Parents who have concerns may contact Guthrie.

The investigation is ongoing.

ORANGE COUNTY Local government leaders have accused state lawmakers of seeking to pass numerous bills — both in the 2017 and 2018 legislative sessions — that seek to erode home rule.

And municipal leaders said they have had enough of Tallahassee’s continual attack on their authority and ability to regulate issues they believe should be left at the local level.

During a press conference Feb. 9 at Orlando City Hall, mayors from several local jurisdictions voiced their grievances in an attempt to draw attention to what they believe is a pressing matter that affects residents in not only Orange County but also the state.

“Our residents need to know their right to self-governance is being attacked, and we need their help,” said Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn, also the president of the Florida League of Cities, an organization that advocates for self-government. “You’re probably saying, ‘Why are we gathered here today?’ ... I want our residents to know and understand that their

Bruhn and the accompanying mayors identified several bills they insist would strip away local government ability and hinder their ability to protect and provide for their residents.

property owners need to pay for a permit to cut down a tree and what, if any, mitigation is required.

Another bill, H.B. 17, would eliminate existing Community Redevelopment Agencies by 2037. CRAs are governmental bodies created to promote economic development in blighted areas using a percentage of the property taxes paid by residents of a community, which is then invested into the underserved area.

“Tools that are helped to revitalize cities, called CRAs, are currently under attack,” Bruhn said.

“There are currently 222 CRAs in the state of Florida. CRAs allow cities to improve communities by implementing projects, such as neighborhood parks, building renovations and affordable housing.

CRAs do not rely on state funding.

They do not require federal funding; (funding) is provided by the tax collected from the old area.”

When asked about the likelihood that these bills will pass, Bruhn said he suspects they all stand a very strong chance of being signed into law.

“It’s looking pretty dismal,” he said. “That’s why you see this sense of urgency on our part.”

If you live near Lakeside Village, you’ll soon have a multitude of restaurants, retailers and more within walking distance.

More than half of the tenants at Westside Shoppes — located adjacent to Lakeside Village off Winter Garden Vineland Road — already are open for business, with the rest coming within the next two months.

The 117-acre site, owned by Unicorp National Developments Inc., comprises 70,000 square feet and 24 tenants. Unicorp bought the site in October 2015 with plans to turn it into a mixeduse development, and after two years of construction, the shopping plaza is ready to go.

Planning for Westside Shoppes began in 2014, and the goal was for it to be more than a strip center — rather, it would be a place to come for an experience, said Unicorp Senior Vice President Amy Schuemann.

“I think the local community will really appreciate the atmosphere we are creating with the architecture and common areas,” Schuemann said. “We tried to get a good mix of neighborhood eateries and services, making a convenient shopping destination for the local residents.”

Aside from the restaurants and shops, the site also will host a middle school, the 44-unit Venetian Isle townhome community and the 302-unit Venetian Isle apartment complex. Eventually, 170 single-family homes will follow.

ity owner under the new agreement, Greentree Development Group, which owns 60% of Rosser Reserve LLC, has 100% control of the site, said Thomas Bonds, COO of Greentree Development Group.

“All the details have been worked out in the new agreement with Sue Prosser,” Bonds said. “We have full control of the property.

And we still have our ownership at 60%, but it doesn’t become full ownership until we fulfill our part of the agreement. There are some stipulations in the new agreement that Greentree has to meet in order for that to happen, which we are confident we will meet.”

One of those stipulations is to

pay the debt owed to Sue Prosser, who owns 40% of Rosser Reserve LLC, Bonds said.

Bonds added the project is being backed by a hedge fund group called Security Capital Venture based in Naples, which is giving Greentree between $7 to $10 million as financial support to build homes on all 10 lots.

“The property sat vacant for a while, and the lots were just not selling,” Bonds said. “So now, we have a totally different approach to how we want to do things this time around. We feel that consumers and customers want the actual home on the lot itself as one package.”

Nine lots remain available of the total, five of which are lakefront

lots and five of which are interior lots. The price of an individual luxury home will start at $2.5 million. Greentree is still in the process of choosing a home builder and is working with a sales team headed by Lisa Reed, a broker at Engel and Volkers.

As part of the project’s future changes and rebranding initiative, Greentree also will be changing the name of the subdivision to Green Reserve and the street name to Green Isle Way. “We’re just glad that we were able to come to a resolution,” Bonds said. “Now we can keep the project moving forward and soon have a nice, high-end exclusive product for residents in the Windermere area.”

prison, in February 2016, a judge overturned his conviction and sentence and called for a retrial. The judge ruled that Ward’s defense counsel at the time of the trial failed to properly object to evidence regarding his right to remain silent. His new trial began on February 5, Orange County court records state.

James E. Felman said he represented Ward during his sentencing hearing in 2011 and handled Ward’s initial direct appeal at the time. Felman argued the evidence was insufficient to sustain Ward’s conviction because the state failed to rebut the possibility that Diane’s death was accidental, according to a brief Felman submitted to the state’s 5th District Court of Appeals.

“There was no proof beyond a reasonable doubt in his (Ward’s) trial to prove that he was guilty,” he said.

A representative with Ninth Judicial Circuit Court did not respond to attempts of contact.

Court proceedings are underway in the retrial of an Isleworth man who was convicted in 2011 of killing his wife, according to Orange County court records.

James “Bob” Ward, 69, was arrested in 2009 on a charge of second-degree murder after Orange County deputies found his wife, Diane, dead from a gunshot wound to her face in their Isleworth home. Ward called 911 and told the operator he shot his wife, according to Ward’s arrest report.

“I just shot my wife,” Ward said in the 911 call. “She’s dead. … She’s on the floor in the master bedroom.”

The arrest report also states Ward told the 911 operator the gun was located in a nightstand by the bed. While investigating the scene, deputies discovered broken glass and a spilled liquid in the back patio of the home and recovered a Smith & Wesson .357 magnum handgun from the top drawer of a nightstand.

Ward called an unknown individual while in custody, and a detective observed the conversation. The detective said Ward told the individual on the phone that his wife killed herself and that he “tried to get the gun out of her hand,” the arrest report states.

Although Ward was convicted in 2011 and sentenced to 30 years in

Legendary mobster Al Capone always said he supplied a demand. Now, a restaurant inspired by his story plans to supply the Hamlin area with coalfired pizza.

23 Restaurant Services, which also operates the Ford’s Garage restaurant chain, announced this week that it is opening the second Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza storefront in late 2018.

Capone’s is a Prohibition erathemed restaurant, true to the type of establishment Capone himself might have frequented, restaurant officials said. The ambiance is set through warm wood and iron accents, exposed brick coal-fired ovens, Tiffany glass chandeliers, a speakeasy-style bar and artwork of the mobster himself.

Perhaps the signature feature Capone’s boasts is an underground vault encased in glass beneath the dining-room floor. This stems back to the 2014 construction of the original location in Fort Myers: The vault was created from a hole that an old elevator shaft had left in the floor.

In Fort Myers, the former elevator shaft now acts as a model of Al Capone’s mysterious vault in the floor of the restaurant, with

Blanche Marie Williams, 92, left peacefully to be with the Lord on Jan. 25, 2018. Marie, as she was known by most, was born in Gardner, West Virginia, and in 1958 moved to what was then the “pristine” shores of Lake Apopka with her second husband Haven (deceased). Although Florida became her home, she loved going back to visit the mountains of West Virginia whenever possible.

She was the eldest girl in a family of 10 siblings and began working at age 14 for Lisagor’s Department Store in Princeton, West Virginia, as a counter hostess. She had an eye for fashion and a natural way with people that led to her becoming a clothes buyer.

This gave her the opportunity to travel to fashion houses and clothing shows in places such as New York and St. Louis.

Marie was an avid reader and believed education was a gift to be savored. While raising her two girls, she completed her GED through Mid Florida Tech and started an associate’s degree at Valencia Community College.

The majority of her career was spent in various clerical roles for Florida Gas Co. and Florida Power Corporation (now Duke Energy), where she developed a wanderlust for travel that took her to all but two of the seven continents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Temple Freewill Baptist Church, 1208 E. Story Road, Winter Garden, Florida.

She loved people, particularly the elderly, and she dedicated the majority of her retirement years as an elder advocate through AARP. Holding various leadership roles with AARP at both the district and state levels, she traveled throughout the state of Florida and made regular trips to Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., to help craft elder-care legislation. Her advocacy and passion for her beloved West Orange County led her to the West Orange Chamber of Commerce, where she became a Lifetime Ambassador. She was also an active member of VFW Post No. 2093. She loved gardening, cooking, playing washboard in the AARP band, bowling (Orlando Champion for Mixed Doubles in 1963 and 1964), and college football — especially the UCF Knights (gooooo KNIGHTS!).

Widowed twice and a cancer survivor, her faith in the Lord

knew few, if any, limits. She was a lifelong Methodist who understood fully her calling to reflect the light of Christ into the world.

She loved volunteering over the years at Pine Hills UMC in various roles as youth chaperone, choir member and Vacation Bible School assistant. As the effects of aging made it difficult for her to attend worship services, she transferred her membership to St. Luke’s UMC, where she volunteered by writing greeting cards to those who were shutins or going through illness. She would often say, “They may not know me, but it doesn’t matter.

God knows them, and I can pray for them.”

She is preceded in death by husbands William Wesley Smith and Haven J. Williams and is survived by: daughters, Karen Wesley Williams and Alice Marie Williams, along with her adopted daughters, Pammie O’Bannon and Debby Zutter; sister Lillie Mae White (West Virginia); brother, James H. Johnson (Tennessee); and dozens of nieces, nephews and “greats” — all of whom she dearly loved.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 17, at St. Luke’s UMC, 4851 S. Apopka-Vineland Road, Orlando, FL 32819. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Luke’s UMC designating either Shepherd’s Hope or the East Winter Garden (EWG) Initiative.

There’s no place like home.

Now, after last weekend’s opening and dedication of Deputy Scott Pine Community Park, several programs for Windermere High have one.

The park, named for the Orange County Sheriff’s Officer killed in

the line of duty in 2014, houses the stadium for Windermere High.

That makes it the new home to the first-year school’s football, soccer, lacrosse, flag football and track-and-field programs.

Although there are still plenty of details to work out regarding day-to-day and game-night operations, there is a sense of pride that is pervading Windermere athletic programs, thanks to the facility’s state-of-the-art synthetic-turf playing surface and rubberized track.

The Foundation Academy boys soccer team earned its first playoff victories last week.

First, the Lions defeated Orangewood Christian 2-1 in overtime Feb. 7 in the Class 1 Regional Quarterfinals. Next, at The Master’s Academy Feb. 10 in the regional semifinals, it took penalty kicks for Foundation to earn the 1-0 victory. The Lions (15-3) played in the regional final Feb. 14, after press time.

Dr. Phillips senior guard Daniel Love scored 21 points in the Panthers’ regular-season finale Feb. 10 against Lake Gibson. The 21 points moved Love up one spot in the program’s alltime scoring list to fourth entering this week’s district tournament, Love has scored 1,407 points.

Mike Bradley’s connection to the Dr. Phillips High baseball program — of which he has been the head coach since 2009 — goes back even further than his freshman season as a player for the Panthers in 1995.

Before he arrived on campus, Bradley attended Panthers games.

Now, more than two decades later, the alum-turned-coach has continued to build the program — literally, in some cases. Dr. Phillips held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 10 for its new locker room attached to the third-base dugout.

The project is the latest in a string of improvements — all intended to make John Barbati Field the premiere high-school baseball destination in Central Florida.

“The three things I wanted to accomplish, being an alumni coming back, were adding a hitting facility, a locker room and hopefully — potentially — lights,” Bradley said. “The big three.”

tor Fred Priest said. “That facility is as good as you’re going to find. You can’t ask for anything better.”

Mike Grenci, who took over as the Wolverines’ athletic director when Priest became the football coach, said the turf field is second to none — locally and beyond.

“The turf is the best money can buy right now,” Grenci said.

“It’s the exact same turf that is in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (where the Super Bowl was played).”

The synthetic playing surface is so advanced that athletes will have to be conscious of not compensating the way they normally would on turf, Priest said.

“The injuries you used to see on turf, you’re not going to see on this,” he said. “It reacts just like grass.”

With spring sports getting

When Olympia High senior Muib Akinyele first started wrestling his sophomore year, he never imagined that just two seasons later, he’d place second in his weight class at the Metro Conference Tournament.

The tournament was held last weekend at Windermere High.

How did you get started in wrestling?

One day when I was talking to my friend at lunch, he said, “Hey Muib, do you do a sport?” I said, “No, I hate running.” He said, “Wrestling is the laziest sport in school,” and I said, “Oh snap, really?” So I tried it. The first day we ran two or three miles, and I was dying. He tricked me.

That was sophomore year.

Why did you stick with wrestling?

I honestly don’t know. I hated coming to practice for a very long time, but I didn’t want to be that one guy that quits, even though many people quit.

Do you still think wrestling is one of the laziest sports?

No, it’s possibly one of the hardest sports in school.

How did it feel to place second at Metros last weekend?

I was honestly really excited, because that’s the highest I’ve ever placed a tournament. I went to Metros last year, and I didn’t even place at that one, so the comparison between those two was like, “Wow.” But I didn’t think I was going to win the last match, Apopka (guys) are like monsters.

How do you prep for a match?

I spend five to 10 minutes warming up, jogging in place and going through drills. I start clearing my mind of all doubts and get into the mindset of nothing can stop me or take me down. I just watch the matches that are going on. It clears my head, because I focus on that instead of my next match.

If I’m not sleeping, I usually play games or talk to friends, or do homework.

Bradley identified the locker room as a need, referencing his own days of changing into his baseball uniform before games either in the bathroom or in his car. And as he told the crowd assembled Saturday, that much hadn’t changed in two decades.

The completed project has individual lockers, bathrooms and shower stalls — a facility that could be mistaken for any collegiate or professional peer.

What are your plans for after high school?

I’m going to UCF to study mechanical or software engineering. I haven’t decided which yet.

What are you most looking forward to about the rest of senior year?

Hopefully going to states and passing all my classes. And graduation.

I think Universal, because there’s more stuff to do, and I went to Disney once, and it was kind of lame.

Your mind quits before your body does. If you just get in the mindset where you’re OK, even though your body might signal otherwise, you’ll still be able to succeed and keep going past your limits.

underway — Feb. 12 marks the first day of the regular season for track and field — Windermere track coach Jason Greer has had plenty of athletes seeking him out in the hallway asking when they can go break in their new facility.

“Everyday they ask me, ‘When are we getting down to the track?’” Greer said. “It’s an amazing training facility for our kids. … It’s going to be a great attribute to our program.”

Greer said the rubberized track is lined to be able to host any level of competition.

But Greer, who was present along with several of his athletes for the dedication ceremony Feb. 10, said it is also important that current and future Wol-

Fundraising for the project began in 2015. Fundraising had to be completely private, and to even begin construction, the program had to show it already had $165,000 in cash and assets.

So far, the money raised and spent has exceeded $200,000.

Players raised funds individually, and a DPHS Baseball Facilities Foundation with an elected board also played a significant role. Donations came from many families and business, including those of some of the program’s more famous alumni.

The names Johnny Damon and A.J. Pierzynski may ring a bell to many baseball fans, and those names also appeared in the program as significant donors.

They weren’t alone, either.

Olympia girls hoops tops DP, advances out of district The Olympia and Dr. Phillips girls hoops teams met twice this season — with two very different results. On Dec. 14, early in the regular season, Dr. Phillips coasted to a 49-36 victory.

The first home game at the new stadium will be a boys lacrosse game Feb. 20. The spring season will feature home games and meets for boys and girls lacrosse, flag football and track at the facility.

And on May 24, the Windermere football program will host Melbourne’s Holy Trinity Academy for its spring football game — the first home football game for the Wolverines after an inaugural season that featured all road games.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Priest said. “I think our whole community is going to come.”

No matter the sport, Windermere athletes such as Amaya Ugarte are ready and raring to go now that they have a home.

“We are very excited,” Ugarte said. “We’re ready to make a legacy here.”

“We have (more than) 50 individual families that really contributed big-time,” Bradley said. “Our alumni stepped up right away — and I’m talking about alumni from the early 1990s. It’s really been a community effort.”

Damon was one of a group of alumni who attended the ribbon-cutting. Former coaches such as Mike Barefoot and John Barbati, the field’s namesake, were there, as well.

The group wanted to drive home the idea that investing in Dr. Phillips baseball is more than brick and mortar — it’s an investment in tradition.

“This is a special place,” Bradley said. “It has a rich tradition.”
