The six candidates for Windermere Town Council discussed several hot-button issues pertaining to the town’s challenges during the Candidates Night Forum hosted Monday, Feb. 11, at Town Hall.

The forum, moderated by West Orange Chamber of Commerce President Stina D’Uva, featured candidates Liz Andert, Mike Hargreaves, Bill Martini, Dina Pryor and incumbents Bob McKinley and Richard Montgomery, who shared their plans for the future of the town.

Former glory

The Henry Nehrling Society Inc. is an all-volunteer not-forprofit corporation established by a group of citizens who wanted to preserve the home and horticultural legacy of Dr. Nehrling, a famed horticulturist and ornithologist. This was one of Florida’s earliest experimental botanical gardens, and Nehrling tested about 3,000 new and rare plants for the Bureau of Plant Industry, now known as the USDA. The property was purchased in 2009, and restoration efforts have been ongoing with the help of volunteer gardeners, arborists and scouts.

The property has been the site of more than 40 Eagle Scout projects and at least 15 Girl Scout Gold, Silver and Bronze projects. The Palm Cottage Gardens, at 2267 Hempel Ave., Gotha, is on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information on volunteering or taking a tour, call (407) 4459977.

heresa Schretzmann-Myers first applied for a $59,000 matching grant to renovate the old homestead that stood watch over the grounds of Gotha’s Nehrling Gardens in 2017. The original application package for a restoration project included beautiful photos of the gardens.

But then Hurricane Irma struck Central Florida, leaving behind a path of destruction — and forcing the postponement of the grant award in Tallahassee.

“After the hurricane hit, they told everybody, ‘We need you to dig out from the hurricane and come back,’” SchretzmannMyers said.

“We were devastated,” she said.

“The gardens were looking great, and we basically had to start over.”

For Nehrling Gardens, that meant spending an extra $18,000 to clean up. The five-story bunya tree lost two-fifths of its height, the top crashing down on a historic palm. A massive tree in the neighboring yard blocked the Nehrling Gardens driveway and punctured the roof of the garage classroom wing. The cost to remove this tree was $4,000.

Schretzmann-Myers said a tornado touched down near Lake Nally to the east, uprooted a giant magnolia and sent an oak tree into the greenhouse before striking the bunya tree. Some of these trees were 60 inches in diameter.

“It took us six months to a year to recover from Hurricane Irma,” she said.

Earlier this year, SchretzmannMyers and a construction representative from Austin Historical, in Orlando, returned to Tallahassee to appear in front of the Florida Historical Commission.

They had six minutes to plead their case in hopes of winning the large grant.

Nehrling Gardens applied for the special-categories grant to remove all the rotted wood off the house and kitchen and replace the rotted wood siding and any rotted timbers with new pressure-treated pine. The rest of all the original wood will be kept, Schretzmann-

Myers said, but the lead paint will be carefully removed using an environmentally friendly liquid that congeals into one layer and can be peeled away.

She said the commission chair was excited to hear about the Nehrling project. After all the applications had been presented, Nehrling was ranked No. 4 out of 61.

“We knew that we would definitely get that matching funding,” Schretzmann-Myers said.

Nehrling Gardens raised the matching dollars through plant sales, the annual wine walk and amaryllis festival and other community outreach efforts.

Schretzmann-Myers explained the detailed restoration project.

“We’re removing all the rotted wood from the historic house, the front and back porch and the historic kitchen and replacing it with new pressure-treated pine or heart pine and/or accoya wood,” she said. “We are also restoring the metal roof; pressuring cleaning and getting all the algae off, stopping the rust and corrosion.

We have to repoint all the brick work — chimney, brick pier foundations under the house, the front porch.”

As part of the grant, Schretzmann-Myers must document all the work in photos.

“It’s a great way to show how you can reuse these homes and not tear them down and start over,” she said. “Beautiful craftsmanship, sure they need a little TLC, but the workmanship is beautiful. It’s part of our Florida history and our architecture.”

Work began Jan. 29. The Frame Vernacular architecture was a popular design for homes built in West Orange County in the 1880s.

As work continues on the home restoration, the gardens continue to serve as a tool for getting students outside and teaching them science. And so many of Nehrling’s trees still stand.

“Robins come in to eat the cherries from all the cherry laurels and the Surinam cherries and the palm nuts that he planted,” Schretzmann-Myers said.

eat the palm nuts and seeds. We have cardinals and tufted titmice, mockingbirds and the water birds at the lake. We have owls that live here year-round in trees Nehrling planted. Every Florida-native tree or palm feeds a bird.”

And although the process is tedious, Schretzmann-Myers is grateful for the chance to learn more about the gardens and the property’s history.

“You get to see every historical document ever filed for this site,

starting with when it first applied for National Register status,” she said.

The organization has two years to complete the project.

He is most recognized for his work with the Windermere Rotary Club, for which he served as president; West Orange Habitat For Humanity; and Home At Last, an organization he founded with Bill Curdts that provides homes for wounded veterans.

Criswell’s work did not go unnoticed. In recent years, he was recognized numerous times with honors and accolades for his service to the community.

In 2009, the Winter Garden Elks Lodge named him Citizen of the Year.

A year later, Criswell was selected as one of Major League Baseball’s All-Stars Among Us for his extraordinary contributions to his community and traveled to Anaheim, California, as a guest of the Tampa Bay Rays for the 2010 MLB All-Star Game.

In 2011, he and Curdts were named Citizens of the Year for Orange County District 1 “for their commitment to military families and the significant collaborative partnerships they created to make this amazing program a success,” said S. Scott Boyd, former Orange County commissioner. “Bill and his passion for helping our community heroes is evident from his work in the town of Oakland and the number of military families he’s helped over the years.”

In 2014, Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn declared March 2 Bill Criswell Day and presented him a plaque with a key to the town of Windermere for his work with Home At Last.

The following year, Criswell was one of two recipients of the Golden Eagle Award, presented by the Central Florida Council of Boy Scouts of America.

“Being a small part of a veteran returning home is an honor, privilege and rewarding experience you won’t ever forget,” Criswell said upon receiving his scouting award.

Criswell had a dream of creating a Windermere Veterans Memorial; in 2018, the project he spearheaded was unveiled in front of Windermere Town Hall.

It features five pedestals around the flag plaza that honor each military branch and a sixth one that explains the monument.

A LIFE WELL LIVED

Criswell was born June 18, 1925, and grew up in Euclid, Ohio, graduating from high school in 1943.

In the fall, he joined the United States Navy and was assigned to the maintenance battalion. After two-and-one-half years in the military, Criswell returned home.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Kent State University, Ohio, and moved to Central Florida, where he met his future wife, Helen Ann. He loved sports and spent a great deal of time on the baseball diamond or basketball court, said his daughter, Holly Hansen, of Orlando. He was a Boston Celtics fan and an even bigger fan of the Cleveland Indians.

“He once saw (Shaquille O’Neal) tossing around a basketball with some local kids on the old b-ball court next to (Windermere) Town Hall,” Hansen said.

“Dad was really touched by that and became the (Orlando) Magic’s biggest supporter from that day on.”

Criswell spent 29 years with H.C. Buchanan Concrete Inc. before retiring as vice president in 1994. The project of which he was most proud was roofing the

Helen died in 1997 after 46 years of marriage. Hansen said her father was lost after her death but “the Church of the Messiah was the light that guided him out into the sunshine again.”

“He started making friends and getting involved with the community and with veterans causes,” she said. “He felt he had been given a chance at life, and he grabbed it with both hands. All he wanted to do was to give back. The rest of his days were spent in the service of others.”

He turned his passion to service with the Windermere Rotary Club, the Central Florida Builders Exchange and West Orange Habitat for Humanity, serving as president of all three.

In 2007, he found a way to combine his building skills with his desire to help veterans and their families through Home At Last, which builds handicap-accessible, mortgage-free homes for veterans wounded in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eight homes have been constructed in Oakland, and a ninth will be built this year.

“There is a certain bond with people who have served their country — I don’t care if they’re Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force — there’s just that bond of respect for the other individual for giving time to their country,” he once said.

“Bill Criswell will be truly missed,” said Gary Atwill, who met Criswell at a Winder-

mere Rotary Club meeting and worked with him with Home At Last. When Criswell’s health began to decline, Atwill succeeded him as board chairman.

“He made life better for many in West Orange County,” Atwill said. “His service to the community will live on.”

Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn said he has much admiration for Criswell.

“Bill didn’t just make a contribution to the town of Windermere,” he said. “Bill made a contribution to Central Florida. …

He just made such a tremendous impact on Central Florida. … He gave so much to the veterans of Central Florida; he has made a lasting impact.”

In 2011, Bruhn and friends in the community decided it was time to give back to Criswell to honor a man who worked tirelessly on behalf of others. A day of service was planned, and group of volunteers gathered to paint the veteran’s house, which he designed and built himself.

“There is just an entire history of Bill in the community,” Bruhn said. “There’s a hole in Windermere that will be very hard to fill because he has just done so many things.”

Betsy VanderLey, District 1 Orange County commissioner, said she considered Criswell to be a friend and an example of service to his fellow man. She grew to know him through the Windermere Rotary.

“Bill always exemplified the ‘Service Above Self’ motto of Rotary,” she said. “He gave his talents to many causes but most notably to Home At Last. …

Because of his efforts with these vets, he has left generational impact on those families as well as in Oakland.

“Always the gracious gentleman, Bill shared with me shortly before he passed that his prayers were those of gratitude for the life God gave him,” she said. “Our community and my life is better for having known Bill Criswell, and I suspect that God welcomed him with a ‘well done, good and faithful servant.’”

Andert, a six-year resident from Minnesota with a background in communications and marketing, said she decided to run because she understands how development and traffic can affect an area after having owned a business in downtown Winter Park. Andert emphasized her top priority would be natural resources and to improve the town’s external communications.

Mike Hargreaves. Hargreaves, a three-year resident who owns a security company, decided to run because he is familiar with the cutthrough traffic and speeding issues plaguing the town and he hopes to delve into the issue and help find a feasible solution if he gets elected.

He said he would endeavor to take care of the budget and “see where they could skim” to redistribute funding for town projects.

Bob McKinley. Incumbent candidate McKinley, a 10-year resident with 45 years of management experience and four years on the council, emphasized his passion for the community and his value to the council. McKinley said he has worked to improve communication between the council and residents and hopes to prioritize the maintenance of the town’s sidewalks, roadways and town facilities.

Dina Pryor. Pryor, a four-year resident with 30 years of experience in retail management, decided to run because she has many ideas to help the town and firmly promised to work hard to get things done.

THE CHALLENGES

All candidates cited the issue of cut-through traffic and acknowledged the town’s limitations regarding a solution as a top challenge.

“There’s nothing we can do about the traffic,” Martini said.

“We are a geographic anomaly, but

we’ve got to do what we can to keep our residents safe.”

Montgomery also mentioned the costly challenge of bringing sewer water services to the town.

McKinley shared his thought on the town’s fiscal challenges and how they relate to other challenges.

Regarding solutions, Andert emphasized a need for communication with neighboring communities and affected residents. Pryor agreed, emphasizing if the town chooses to use barricades to deadend residential streets, it should be decided by residents.

were arrested in January and face child-pornography charges after sending each other several text messages of a sexual nature that included four images of young girls in inappropriate positions, according to an arrest report from the Oviedo Police Department.

The arrest report states the text messages were sent in November 2018. In the text messages, Vaidya asked Zielke — a mother of two girls ages 11 and 12 — to take photos of her daughters in the nude while they were in the shower or changing clothes, according to the report.

“At no point did (Zielke) deny his request nor attempt to change the subject,” the report reads. “Instead, she continued to engage in the conversations.”

Upon receiving obscene images from Vaidya, Zielke failed to report the child pornography or request Vaidya stop messaging her such images, the report said.

A detective assigned to the case conducted an interview with Zielke’s daughters in early January. The 11-year-old told the detective that their mother had taken a photo of her nude in the shower.

When the 11-year-old, who was concerned because Vaidya was spending the night that evening, confronted her mother, Zielke “dismissed her concerns” and assured her she already had deleted the photos, the report said. However, Zielke’s daughters

later stumbled upon the images on their mother’s personal laptop, according to Zielke’s arrest report from the Oviedo Police Department.

Vaidya was charged with possession of child pornography and obscene communication with solicitation of a parent.

He has since bonded out of Volusia County jail. Zielke also has bonded out of Seminole County Jail.

Windermere High thespians have been gearing up to perform the school’s first play. “‘The Outsiders’ is a play based on S.E. Hinton’s novel, which a lot of the kids actually read during middle school,” said theater teacher Jonathan Jackson. “It’s our first (non-musical) play — no singing or dancing.”

The story of “The Outsiders” is a classic, coming-of-age tale of Ponyboy Curtis and his gang of friends, who refer to themselves as Greasers. The play follows a conflict between the Greasers and the wellto-do Socs (pronounced, “soashes”).

“It’s basically a clash or coming together of two communities — the Socs and the Greasers,” Jackson said. “The Socs are sort of very privileged, well-to-do, wealthy people, and the Greasers are more down on their luck. It’s told through the lens of young people, so it feels authentic to young people when they’re reading the book and when you see it on stage because it’s their story they’re experiencing.

“We were trying to find something that would involve a lot of people on stage but also would be something that people would be familiar with so people would want to come and see the show and get excited about it,” Jackson said of “The Outsiders.”

“We thought ‘The Outsiders’ would be a good option to do both of those things.”

Sophomore Logan Clinger, 16, will be playing the role of Ponyboy Curtis.

“I think it’s very relatable role for myself,” Clinger said. “I’m not exactly the most threatening person. … I use my words, not actions, and it correlates with what he does.”

When Clinger first heard “The Outsiders” would be one of the productions this year, he read the first half of the book. After he got the

role of Ponyboy, he finished reading it. He also watched the movie to get more of an idea of the character’s mannerisms.

One of the most challenging scenes for Clinger to portray was the scene where Ponyboy almost drowns, he said.

“It kind of gave me ideas of what (Ponyboy’s) mindset is to how he would act and how he would react to specific scenarios,” Clinger said of the book. “I get drowned in one part, and that’s very interesting. It’s odd trying to get drowned on stage in a safe manner. We figured it out, obviously, but at first we all had to contemplate on how exactly this was going to work.”

Sophomore Miguel Gil, 16, is cast for the role of Ponyboy’s best friend, Johnny. Gil said he never read the book but did watch the movie a few times to prepare for the role.

“I wanted to be Johnny, because (he’s) just such an emotionally involved character,” Gil said. “It’s just so fun being able to tell such a cool and awesome story and playing it from (Johnny’s) point of view.”

Gil and Clinger both said one of their favorite scenes of the play is the scene in which Johnny and Ponyboy are hiding in a church, because the scene portrays the strong friendship between the two characters.

“I love that scene,” Gil said. “It’s just an intimate moment. ... (Johnny) gets introduced to new things and (the characters) open up to each other.”

“The Greasers have friendships, internally, but I think Ponyboy and Johnny (have) the (closest) friendship,” Clinger said.

Chef Francois Paille, a native of France, recently opened The French Café in Hamlin on a mission to offer French bakery items and food to customers.

A native of France is bringing his home country’s cuisine to Horizon West with his new eatery, The French Café, in Hamlin.

Born in Alsace, France, chef Francois Paille developed a love for sweets and pastries at a young age.

He began by helping his grandmother make jams, cakes and beignets, and that sparked his lifelong passion for baking.

“I like food, and I always liked desserts,” Paille said. “I liked eating it first, so that’s why I (like) working a lot on the taste of things, because I’m very picky with what I’m eating. I’m picky for the customer, too — I want the best for them.”

In France, Paille learned from pastry chefs in Strasbourg and Lyon. He studied the art for seven years before making the transatlantic move to Miami to work as executive pastry chef in a bakery there. Three years ago, he and his wife made the move to Orlando, where he again worked as executive pastry chef at another restaurant before deciding to open his own café.

The French Café opened in December and experienced a few hiccups along the way, Paille said, but things have smoothed out with time, and the community response has been positive.

“At the beginning, we weren’t prepared, and we opened in a rush,” he said. “Now we are fully open, and food is made faster. You need to work

as a team, because by myself, I can’t do everything. I’m glad to have a good team that follows me, and I have two very good managers that help me.”

From croissants, bread and pastries to the French onion soup and crepes, everything at the café is made from scratch with fresh ingredients.

Paille knows not everyone is always adventurous with trying new foods, so there are some familiar favorites on the menu. Those includes a BLT sandwich, ham and cheese croissant, a variety of salads and omelets.

“I want to introduce my French food, but at the same time, I like to offer things that people are more used to,” he said.

Whether a customer is a commuter who wants to grab a quick coffee or bite to eat in the morning, a student looking for a place to grab coffee and study or a someone looking for a sweet treat, Paille hopes to cater to every age and demographic.

“I love the ambiance here (in Hamlin), and I love the people here,” he said. “The human interaction is beautiful for me, seeing all the customers and talking to people.”

Donald Ellis “Lucky” Spivey Sr., 64, of Webster, Florida, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019. He was the son of the late Homer Donald and Frankie Myrle Adams Spivey.

A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he worked for Orange County in the Roads and Drainage Department. His passions were his family, hunting, fishing and softball. He was always eager to share his experience and love of the outdoors with others.

After a long offseason, the time is now for the Panthers and new head coach Ray Evans.

“With all the talent that I’ve ever had in a team — that have been successful — I think that this team has enough talent to be successful,” Evans said. “They definitely have it. They just have to make sure they put it together, stay together and that they all have the one goal in mind — the ‘W.’” Despite a modest 19-14 record last season, the Panthers had a knack for picking up those wins when they needed them the most.

A quick 6-0 season had the Panthers feeling something special, but what followed was a roller-coaster year in which DP won a few and lost a few. Then the

playoffs happened.

Out of nowhere, DP stormed through the region, beating Lake Brantley and Boone before taking out a talented Lake Mary team for the regional title.

The Panthers’ run came to an end as they fell in the state semifinal to Timber Creek. It was an impressive — if unexpected — accomplishment, but for Evans that was last season.

As a sophomore, Olympia High’s Jackson Dillon has been a driving force on the court for the Titans’ boys basketball team. After being promoted to the varsity team this year, Dillon — also a star student with a 4.8 weighted GPA — has been consistent in his three-point shots, having made eight of them in just one game.

How did you get started playing basketball?

About first grade, I was watching the Cleveland Cavaliers versus the Orlando Magic — my parents put me onto it. Once I started watching it, it just clicked, and suddenly I was in love with the sport. From then on, I picked up the ball and started playing on my Little Tikes hoop, and I loved it.

play JV this year, so I was kind of set on playing JV. But then I got moved up for the preseason tournament. I played extremely well then, and that’s what kind of flipped the switch for me and got me going. … I’ve definitely progressed since the fall and gained my confidence again. I just can’t thank the coaching staff and my team enough for the opportunity.

What’s kept you going within the sport?

Definitely shooting threepointers, because that’s kind of like my main attribute. I just love the guys as well — my teams in middle school and also high school. I’m thankful for the coaching staff — all of them have really accepted me my freshman year and also this year.

Was there a game that stuck out to you?

Definitely Winter Park — I hit eight three-pointers against Winter Park, and it was just one of those games where I was feeling it the whole night.

My teammates did an amazing job setting me up then.

How do you balance school and basketball?

It’s hard. I’m in the APEX program right now, so I’m getting about two hours of homework a night. My time management has gotten better throughout the year. Normally I go to practice, come home and start my homework and try to get to bed to stay on a good sleep schedule.

What’s your favorite go-to meal after a game?

I’ve gotta go with a Publix sub, probably. Normally, I have those before games, as well, but a roast-beef sandwich, that’s good.

Also, Jimmy John’s. I like them a lot, too.

Describe the team dynamic this season.

At first it was kind of iffy with us, because there were a lot of seniors leaving and some new players.

But as the team started to progress and go through the season, especially during the winter time, I feel like we definitely started to gain more chemistry with each other and kind of accept our roles as players.

That’s definitely moved us in the right direction.

What do you want to do after high school?

I’m thinking about, depending on how basketball goes, going into a computer engineering kind of thing. I’ve loved computers forever — video games and listening to music and all that — so computers have kind of been my hobby since middle school.

Having that proverbial chip on their shoulders is something Evans hopes will inspire them on another strong playoff push.

It also helps that he’ll be getting the core of the group coming back.

Coming into his first year — following a lengthy stint at Flanagan (Pembroke Pines) — Evans studied the returning roster up and down, and his eyes told him all he needed to know.

“I think that we hit well, we run well, we field well — the pitching and defense can never take a day off and I don’t think that we have a premier 90-plus guy, but I’ve won in the past without that,” Evans said. “You just have to have enough arms in the stable where you can continue moving them around and put the puzzle pieces where they need to be.

And I think the hitting is going to be really important to us this year, because I think we can really swing the bat.”

At the plate for the Panthers, Evans will look to players such as junior outfielder Brandon Fields (.359 BA, 23 RBI, three home runs), senior shortstop Raymond Engron Valero (.321 BA, seven RBI) and senior CJ Cantwell (.299 BA, 10 RBI).

Add to the possible explosive offense a group of talented pitchers in senior Mitchell Stockwell (3-1 record, 0.62 ERA, 43 Ks), senior righty Christopher Bryan (1-0 record, 2.52 ERA, 23 Ks) and senior Casey Carns (0-3, 3.00 ERA, six Ks), and it makes sense why Evans is pretty positive with the hand he was given.

“They’ve been there, done that — they were instrumental players last year,” Evans said. “So you say, ‘OK, you have all those returning starters and those arms returning, and there’s no reason why you guys can’t do as good — or much better — than what you did last year.’”

The two new pitching machines were bought thanks to a few donations. Still, however, there was a lot to be done, Evans said. To raise money, the program will be holding its 14th annual golf tournament fundraiser Monday, Feb. 18, at the Orange Tree Golf Club.

With the event being the biggest fundraiser held by the program, the hope is that it can bring in more money to fund multiple aspects — including traveling to tournaments.

Being able to offer up those kinds of trips helps bonds players and coaches alike, Evans said.

“I’m accustomed to taking spring break trips to go play at big tournaments so that we can get recognized not only by the state but also nationally — you can’t really do that by staying in the state,” Evans said. “Spring break brings kids together. When you go on a road trip … we try to put it together where they’re not with the same guys that they’re accustomed to being with, so they get to know the other guys a little bit better.”

Although the renovations and other things fall into place off the field, on the field the objective is simple: Put yourself in a place to win.

“There’s a lot of things that go into being successful,” Evans said. “If everything goes your way, then it happens. We’re just hoping that everyone stays healthy and that everyone plays at their peak individually, so as a team we peak. Hopefully at the end, we’re in the mix — that’s all you can ask.”
