Copper Rocket Pub reopens The eatery has updated its interiors and menu following months of inactivity.

After months of being grounded, the Copper Rocket Pub is blasting off again.

The bar was purchased last year by AKT, an Orlando-based music merchandising company.

AKT partner Grant Tchekmeian has lived in Maitland near the Copper Rocket for six years and often visited with his brother and business partner Alex. The locale’s storied history and close proximity to the AKT office appealed to the pair.

“We knew the previous owner wanted out of the business,” Tchekmeian said. “We had a conversation with him, and one thing led to another.”

The pub, 106 Lake Ave., has changed hands a few times over the years and closed for a short period of time in 2015. The Tchekmeian brothers signed the

paperwork in August and quickly committed to renovating their new eatery.

Upgrading the Rocket’s cleanliness standard and the variety of foods and drinks offered was a focus for the remodel from the get-go. The business features a new interior with updated seats, tables and a larger food and drink menu. The back room has a new kitchen system to serve up a larger range of food. In the center of the room sits a massive, reconstructed bar filled with hundreds of copper pennies. The brightly-lit silhouette of a rocket ship hangs on the wall next to the door.

The bar staffs 20 to 25 workers serving drinks and pub grub such as burgers, wings and a pretzel Tchekmeian says is the size of a 14-inch pizza.

There’s a few elements from the previous iteration — karaoke, trivia nights and live music —

the new owners hope to revive.

Tchekmeian said they have been booking musical talent to play shows at the bar into April.

On top of everything else, the pub now displays numerous wide-screen televisions on the walls for those wanting to keep up with sports.

“There’s a pub crowd that loves live music, and there’s a pub crowd that loves watching sports,” Tchekmeian said.

“We’re hoping the two groups can live together in harmony.”

After a few soft test runs to prepare, the Copper Rocket Pub had its grand opening on Feb. 3 — just in time for the Super Bowl.

“We had a series of artists playing until from one in the afternoon to two in the morning,” Tchekmeian said. “It was one big party.”

“The trail provides safe pedestrian travel for residents, connecting several amenities including MLK Jr. Park and Mead Botanical Garden,” Economic Development/CRA Manager Kyle Dudgeon said. “It also acts as an alternative means of tying neighborhoods to the places they need like grocery stores and retail shops.”

That entire stretch of Denning Drive will be brought from four lanes to three by the end of the project. Traffic issues are expected to be mitigated with new signalized turns at the major intersections, Dudgeon said.

Construction will take place from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with work expected to take about six to eight weeks. During construction, north- and south-bound lanes will remain open for travel, but drivers should expect delays.

Phase one, which is nearing completion, included a redesign of Denning from Orange to Fairbanks avenues and decorative lighting, mid-block crossings, medians, new landscaping and trees, in addition to the new trail.

back to Canton Avenue. The city plans to place all overhead powerlines underground within the next nine years.

The Denning Drive project was approved by the Community Development Agency in February 2017, but talks surfaced a few years earlier about the project coming to fruition.

Going from four lanes to three along Denning Drive raised concerns about traffic among residents back in 2015, but studies showed the project made sense.

According to a report from engineering consultant firm Comprehensive Engineering Services Inc., roadways that are good candidates for similar road narrowing projects see average daily traffic of 20,000 or fewer vehicles per day. A 24-hour traffic count conducted along Denning during a weekday in October 2014 showed the road saw about 8,900 vehicles per day — well below the 20,000 threshold, the report concluded.

Chamber launches initiative to help women reenter the workplace The inaugural ‘Relaunch: Career Reentry for Professional Women’ began in October.

There’s a competitive game of contract bridge happening every Friday in Maitland. It’s a complex game of strategy and teamwork, and these players in Maitland mean business.

But these aren’t your typical contract bridge players: They are fifth-graders at Dommerich Elementary.

The game of contract bridge is alive and well at Dommerich, where a group of students gather every Friday morning to play the complex card game.

“I joined because it seemed like a new card game that would be fun to learn,” 10-year-old Zachary Rediske said. “I just keep doing it for the thrill of the game, not being sure whether you’re going to win or lose.”

“It’s a lot more complicated than like when my sisters play Go Fish, which is just super easy.”

Dommerich Elementary School students are learning the complex game of contract bridge.

The Dommerich students are able to play bridge every week thanks to Maitland resident Anissa Dyen, who brings the cards to local classrooms to pass the game on to the next generation.

Contract bridge not only helps the students improve their math skills but also boosts their communication skills, because working with teammates is critical in the game, she said.

“The thing about bridge is it’s a partner game,” she said. “That’s a really hard thing for kids, because they’re on the computers playing games, and it’s just themselves.

You cannot win bridge if you cannot communicate to your partner.”

Dyen’s exposure to the game all started about 10 years ago, when her son was attending Bear Lake Elementary in Apopka as a thirdgrader. He joined a bridge class for gifted students that was started by two women who were master players.

Two years later, the class was dissolved by the school, and that’s when Dyen took over the bridge program and began offering it as a club at Bear Lake Elementary.

“I decided to learn and take over the teaching of the bridge there,” Dyen said. “I’ve been doing it ever since. (My son) was obsessed with playing it. I actually had those ladies come to my house and teach me how to play.”

Last October, Dyen started the bridge club at Dommerich, and

already, the game is growing in popularity there.

“It’s fun to play with different people each time,” Ethan Breth, 10, said. “I really like that its a card game, but it’s also not that easy. I always wake up on Friday, and I’m really excited just to come here and play.”

“It’s a lot more complicated than like when my sisters play Go Fish, which is just super easy,” said Meriwether Ruby, 11. “You get more of a challenge.”

But the club gives children more than just a chance to play; it also gives them a chance to compete.

The American Contract Bridge League District 9 Educational Foundation offers small scholarships to young players so they can travel to the North American Bridge Championships every year. All three of Dyen’s children have participated, and she continues to bring players from the school clubs every year to the tournament.

Last year, Dyen took several players to Toronto for a tournament in the summer. The next tournament will take place in late July/early August in Atlanta.

“The American Contract Bridge League doesn’t want this game to die out, because kids don’t play cards,” Dyen said. “This is really an effort to get kids into the game.”

Dyen said she hopes to eventually bring the contract bridge club to more schools.

The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce wants to get women back to work.

The organization recently launched a pilot program to educate and train older women to rejoin the workforce. Titled “Relaunch: Career Reentry for Professional Women,” the program started in October and will finish in April.

“We’re trying to teach the women to fish so they can take care of themselves,” chamber President Betsy Gardner Eckbert said.

Each meeting runs two hours and is held on the last Tuesday of the month at the chamber.

The lessons taught have included developing personal brands, establishing a strong LinkedIn profile, updating resumes, how to acquire professional attire and more.

The issue isn’t teaching the women new talents, because the talent is already there, Eckbert said. Rather, it’s about being more skilled with publicity and exposure; training women from an earlier time to adapt to a different kind of marketplace.

“They’re using free and public programs to promote themselves the best way they possibly can,” Eckbert said.

It’s not an academic issue for Eckbert. She lived through the same fears and anxieties not so long ago when she reentered the workforce in 2013 after stopping to raise her children.

“When I went back, I felt this huge confidence gap that existed between the years I was gone and the sense of, ‘People are going to laugh at me when I go back to work,’” Eckbert said. “But the reality is you can’t unlearn the hard skills you have.”

She said a big factor of the program was to help the women move past having a sense of identity derived from serving other people.

“The first thing these women did after introducing themselves (at the first meeting) was to talk about their families,” Eckbert said.

“I said to them, ‘That was the last time you’ll talk about your families until you get a job’.”

Dawn Jennemann, a Winter Park local, is one of the women in the program. A chemical engineer for 21 years, Jennemann was let go and became a part-time yoga instructor in Florida. She found the program on social media.

Jenneman has been taking care of her son, who was 3 when she stopped working and is now entering the third grade. She’s not sure what new position she wants to take but says she’s absolutely sure of where she wants to be in a year. “(A year from now), I want a full-time job,” Jenneman said. “I hope I’ll have a job that I enjoy, I’m using my skills, and I just feel balanced.”

high probability of Burrow being her blood sister. From there, the floodgates opened, as the two not only found one another but also found family from throughout the country.

Included in the discovery was the revelation that the sisters had four other siblings — two sisters and two brothers — though all of them were deceased. But despite not being able to meet their other siblings, Burrow and Gillen were pleased to find out they weren’t the only children.

“I was happy,” Burrow said with a grin. “It’s a hard feeling to explain — I finally found somebody.”

Finding their lost family, and having them around for even just a short time, is the culmination of a journey that Burrow and Gillen have spent the last 60-plus years of their lives trying to accomplish.

The search started originally with another goal — finding their biological mother.

Both sisters were given up for adoption as babies — neither knew their parents. At the ages of 20 and 19, without knowing of each other’s existence at the time, Burrow and Gillen set out to find their mother.

The search for their mother, as well as their father, proved difficult, as the path seemed to be littered with roadblocks — with the biggest being the discovery that both of their parents had falsified their names on Burrow’s and Gillen’s birth certificates. Neither are sure why this was the case, but after learning their parents’ identities, the two believe it had to do with privacy — their parents weren’t married at the time of either’s birth.

Gillen learned more to the backstory. Their mother was actually their father’s secretary. This is where Gillen made an important connection between her biological family and her adopted family.

It was a seemingly average Tuesday at Brio Tuscan Grille in Winter Park Village.

Locals flowed in and out of the restaurant as they grabbed lunch, but at one table, something lifechanging was happening.

At a large, round table placed toward the front, a family gettogether was taking place that was like no other.

As they broke bread and shared smiles, this family, particularly sisters Shirley Burrow and Beverly Gillen, had 81 years of catching up to do.

Burrow, a resident of Winter Park for more than 50 years, sat next to Gillen at the table — surrounded by nieces and nephews who had flown in from her native Akron, Ohio.

“I think it’s been the most wonderful few days of my life,” Burrow said. “I’ve been so happy with Beverly and all my kin folk — all my nephews and nieces — and I just can not explain it. It’s just a wonderful feeling.”

With every word Burrow spoke, a grin shined through, while Gillen returned the gesture herself.

“It’s just awesome — words can not explain the feeling that I have felt with these people sitting at this table,” said Gillen, who had flown into Florida from her current home just outside of Denver, Colorado.

The family reunion itself had been in the works since the two sisters found one another back in October via the website ancestry. com.

Burrow had been on the site for a while before deciding last year to get her DNA tested. She hoped it would lead to better results in finding long-lost family members.

Once the DNA test was put into the site’s system, messages were sent to Gillen regarding the

searching for a place to have really good food and really good drinks, and we wanted to marry the two together because we always felt like we were compromising on one or the other,” she said. “We want our restaurant to have the feel like you were coming to our house to hang out.”

The desire to make their restaurant a casual, family-run eatery runs deep for the duo —

so much so that it’s the origin of the restaurant’s unusual name. “Garp” and “Fuss” are the nicknames handed down to Zucco’s younger sisters by their mother. It was also a means of honoring Liz’s late father, who died from cancer not long ago.

“We wanted to just pay homage to really keeping it in the family,” Nielsen said. “Their mom still calls them Garp and Fuss to this day.”

Both Nielsen and Zucco, Winter Park residents, have years of restaurant experience, but it wasn’t until last year that the two finally decided to act on their desire to start their own business.

From that moment on, the duo searched for the perfect spot to finally place their new business.

“We walked in and we both just felt like it had a lot of potential,” Nielsen said of the location.

“There is so many different areas — there’s an upstairs loft, there’s a little back area where we threw a pool table in — and we just really loved the area.”

Nielsen calls the restaurant’s style of food “American fusion,” for lack of a better term, but she said it’s largely about small plates that can be easily shared.

“We were thinking that my father’s sister knew that our mother was our father’s secretary,” Gillen said. “So his sister knew that the secretary was pregnant and wanted to put her child up for adoption. His sister told her husband, and her husband told my adoptive father and they said, ‘OK, we’ll adopt her.’”

Despite the twists, turns and later discoveries, the two unraveled the mystery and identity of their parents — which not only gave some closure to a long and exhausting journey but also helped lead to the discovery of one another.

“We’re just so happy it happened — it seems like it took a long time, but we’re going to make the most out of it,” Gillen said.

“I wish I could think of everything I feel and explain it,” Burrow said. “I’m so happy to have my sister.”

The restaurant also offers a variety of wings and what Nielsen calls “Start & Share,” which include tacos and a “Butcher’s Board” — which includes cured meats, cheeses and seasonal accompaniments.

Although the restaurant currently is in its soft opening phase (they’re only serving lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and dinners on Tuesday and Thursday) Nielsen said they plan to host a grand opening in March.

The extended soft opening is being done so she and Zucco can make sure everything is perfect for their new customers.

“The biggest thing for us — besides opening up and creating this awesome restaurant and trying to give an exceptional experience to customers — is we just really want to create this culture and just try to be a little bit different,” Nielsen said.

Giving a hoot The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey spreads nature awareness with Owl Prowl events.

It’s been nearly 40 years since the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey opened its doors – and the facility is still rehabilitating injured birds and teaching the community about its feathered residents.

The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey has been teaching visitors about owls through its monthly Owl Prowl events, hosted during the nesting season from November to March.

The center’s most recent Owl Prowl was Friday, Feb. 2, where visitors had a chance to make owl crafts, dissect owl pellets and, of course, see the predatory birds who call the center “home” up close.

defect, which also prohibits her from flying.

“For Owl Prowls specifically, we really just wanted to let people know that there’s owls in the neighborhood … and some of the plights that they go through out in the wild with us trimming trees and taking away their nesting habitats,” Education Manager Laura VonMutius said.

“It’s also just for kids getting to see owls up close and kind of get that connection to nature and hopefully inspire them to care as they grow up.”

Owl Prowls also include a segment where groups search the nearby woods for wild owls, driving the point home that the feathered creatures are ingrained in the area.

offer a glimpse into what the center does to rehabilitate injured raptors, which includes birds like owls, eagles, hawks, vultures and falcons.

The center first opened its doors in 1979, after Audubon Florida employee Doris Mager started conducting raptor rehab out of her home. She worked with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Audubon to raise the funds to open the center by climbing 50 feet into an unoccupied eagles nest and living there for an entire week. The event received national news coverage, and Mager was able to raise enough money to open the center.

Since then, the facility has helped more than 22,000 raptors, VonMutius said.

Officials hope events such as the

ongoing Owl Prowls will spark an interest in younger guests to take an interest in wildlife — and make better choices to conserve the nature around them, VonMutius said.

“I hope that they would just realize that nature is awesome and wildlife is awesome, and that there’s wildlife and nature all around us, even in our neighborhoods,” VonMutius said. “By helping just even in our neighborhoods cleaning up trash … you’re helping wildlife even in a small way. We can all participate in that.”

The center also plans to host Owl Prowls specifically for Girl Scout troops in the future, so the scouts can earn their night owl badges.

‘STATE OF EXCELLENCE: TREASURES FROM FLORIDA PRIVATE COLLECTIONS’

Through April 29 at the Orlando Museum of Art. One popular way for a museum to showcase unique works of art without the cost of traveling “blockbuster” exhibits is the growing trend for museums to “borrow” works from private collections, thereby showing works of interest that would not otherwise be seen by the public. In the Orlando Museum of Art’s new exhibit, 138 works of art are exhibited from private collections throughout the state of Florida. Not surprisingly, the exhibit focuses on American and European art, including paintings, sculpture and significant decorative artworks from the 16th to the mid20th century. Walking tours, offered the first Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m., offer insights into the works and

It’s become an unwritten “law” that Southern barbecue be accompanied by blues and grassroots music, and Winter Garden has this equation worked out to perfection. For the second-consecutive year, the annual Trash 2 Trends Recycled Fashion Show, held Saturday, Feb. 3, at SeaWorld Orlando, was sold out.

Hosted by Keep Orlando Beautiful, the fashion runway show challenges designers to craft high-end fashion from recycled items and waste, such as plastic bags, newspapers, bubble wrap, straws, plastic bags, cardboard boxes,

vinyl records, CDs and more.

Designer Ben Van Beuskom crafted a dress appropriately titled “Evolutionary Irma” using debris left behind by Hurricane Irma. Another outfit — created

WPVC dominates at AAU Chill Blast Grand Prix Three teams from the Winter Park Volleyball Club qualified for the AAU Nationals after bringing home gold medals.

Winning — that’s what they seem to do over at the Winter Park Volleyball Club these days.

One by one, teams representing the WPVC have helped fill the trophy cases that sit in the club’s facility in Maitland — serving as a physical reminder of their dominance.

That ability to not only win but also crush opponents shined at the 2018 AAU Chill Blast Grand Prix two weeks ago in Oviedo.

Among the teams from WPVC to compete, five medaled in their specific age group — with the U11 Elite Black, U12 Elite Black and U13 Elite Orange bringing home the gold.

“They just have expectations, and they play, and they’re disciplined — that’s how we were able to go in there and sweep three age groups,” said Aaron Phillips, club director and head coach of the U11 team. “These kids know what the expectations are, and it’s not win or lose, it’s to compete and to play with discipline.”

The wins themselves are big for the three teams, because the shiny medals are the golden tickets for getting into the upcoming AAU National Tournament — which

will be held June 17 to 20 in Orlando.

The dominance of WPVC in the Chill Blast Grand Prix is the embodiment of the club’s formula of success that includes working with younger kids as early as possible to prepare them for competition, Phillips said.

“We really strive on developing the youth — getting them young that have never played before and developing them,” he said. “We try to set ourselves up a year before.”

featured teams from around the Central Florida area — from Tampa to Cocoa.

Those three teams at the U11, U12, and U13 level alone went 16-0 and won a combined 32 of their 35 sets played. The U12 Elite Black went undefeated in their 10 sets.

Phillips’ 11U Elite Black squad only suffered one blemish in the first game in pool play against the OTVA Volleyball Academy — North.

team lost some footing in a 13-25 second set loss. The setback didn’t keep WPVC down for long, as they took over in the third set with a dominating 15-3 route.

The race was on from there, as WPVC finished with a perfect 4-0 in pool play before making it into the gold division.

By sealing first place in the pool, WPVC was able to enjoy a first round bye before taking on Cape Coast’s 11U Elite squad in the semifinals.

In the first set, Cape Coast was blanked when WPVC did not allow a single point in a perfect 25-0 win. Even more impressive is that each point from the win came during Issabella Casanova’s 25 consecutive serves.

The second set didn’t go much better for Cape Coast. WPVC went on another point streak to seal the match with a 25-7 win.

The win put WPVC’s 11U team into the final in a rematch against the only team that had won a set against them all tournament — OTVA Volleyball Academy — North.

That match proved more difficult than the semifinal. But WPVC was up to the task and squeaked out back-to-back 25-21, 25-23 victories over OTVA to win gold at Chill Blast.

“When they won that tournament, those girls ran in together and started hugging, started crying — four of them had tears in their eyes they were so happy they had won,” Phillips said. “And that’s just one of the reasons why I do it — to see those girls that happy.”

What Tax Cuts and Jobs Act means for homeowners

ecently, a new tax plan was signed into law, and many still are figuring out what the impact will be.

As a homeowner or a future owner, what will this tax bill mean for you? Although you may or may not be thrilled with some of the new tax guidelines created by the law, the facts to know regarding the impact to homeownership and related costs are simpler than you may think.

Does the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act impact my filing for 2017?

In most cases no, unless specifically noted by your CPA or tax professional. There are indeed a multitude of updates and changes to the tax code.

However, you do not have to worry about this for the your 2017 tax return in most instances. As always consult a professional in this area if you are unsure.

Do I now have to live in my home for five of the last eight years to avoid the Capital Gains Tax when selling?

No. This was a major concern of mine as well as many of my customers. I spoke with Skyward Tax and Accounting Service owner Anthony Wongshue, and he advised me that the timeframe for this has not changed. The Senate passed bill initially aimed to change the time that an owner occupant must have lived in their home to be exempt from capital gains. The proposed change required that homeowners would live in their primary residence for five of the past eight years to be excluded from the capital gains tax per National Association of Realtors. Due in large part to lobbying by NAR, this was not voted into law. Homeowners need only to have lived in their home for two of the last five years to avoid capital gains tax.

This is a huge win for homeowners everywhere. NAR’s Profile of Buyers and Sellers found 54% of move-up buyers use profits from the sale of their previous home as a down payment on their new home.

And more often, homeowners are opting to make a move to their next residence in fewer than five years. Thankfully, this nightmare scenario was avoided.

Can I still write off my mortgage interest?

Yes! But there are some pretty major changes here. Per NAR, the bill passed by the House would have limited the mortgage interest deduction at $500,000 and abolished the deduction for second or vaca-

tion homes. Again thankfully, that did not happen.

The current changes reduce the limit on deductible mortgage debt from $1 million to $750,000 for loans made after the Dec. 14, 2017. Although this isn’t good news for some, if you currently hold a loan of $1 million, it will be grandfathered in and not subject to the new regulations. You also can still deduct interest paid on your second home, with the aforementioned cap of $750,000 on loans taken after Dec. 24, 2017.

What about my HELOC? Not all good news here, either. Per Julie Hoffmeyer, president of Bravo Unlimited Tax and Accounting services, you can no longer deduct the interest on your home equity line of credit. NAR does clarify this point on their website citing that if proceeds from the HELOC are used to “substantially improve” your home they can be deducted. Best bet as always is to check with your accountant or tax pro if you feel you have made such improvements and want this deduction.

both single and married filers. Many will not be happy with this change, and I can’t say I blame them. Luckily, we avoided the worst scenario of the deduction being removed entirely.

What else do I need to know?

The deduction for moving expenses has been removed unless you are a member of the Armed Forces. Estate tax exemptions have been doubled vastly, lowering the number of people who will ever have to pay them. And if you do not have insurance, you will no longer have to pay a penalty starting in 2019. The final bill is

still controversial with some as the cap on property taxes will impact those in high tax areas or properties of higher value. For some the tax code changes as they relate to real estate will not be felt, although these households likely will be impacted in other ways. Seek professional advice if you are unclear on any of the changes and how they impact you personally.

That’s no surprise to Coldwell Banker real-estate agent Mick Night, who grew up in the Winter Park/Maitland area.

“After 30 years in working a three-mile radius from Park Avenue, Winter Park is a special place, and I hear it repeatedly from buyers that have lived all around the country,” Night said. “Winter Park is a place you want to call home as your primary residence and those that have other homes consider them secondary to Winter Park.

According to MansionQuest, the just value of the home is $9.2 million and is second only to the 30,742-square-foot home in Windermere owned by

Sacramento Kings shooting guard Vince Carter. That home boasts a just value of $10.26 million.

The Interlachen Avenue home was also the former site of the historic Casa Feliz house designed by James Gamble Rogers II. After the house came under threat of demolition in 2001, the community raised enough money to pick the home up and move it to its current location at 656 N. Park Ave., where it serves as a historical landmark and event venue.

There’s plenty of other noteworthy local homes on the list.

The oldest Winter Park home in the top 100 — and the oldest overall — is the 9,571-square-foot home at 1461 Via Tuscany, which was built in 1919 and is now owned

by Harvey L. Massey, chairman and CEO of pest control company Massey Services.

Of the 42 homes, 24 were built in the the last 20 years, while 13 of them date back prior to 1950.

Sitting at slot 25 on the list, the home at 1020 Palmer Ave. enjoys the most acreage out of any Winter Park home in the top 100 with 10.83 acres, which is the eighth highest overall out of the 100 homes.

The highest-ranked home with a Maitland zip code is the residence at 1720 E. Adams Drive, which has a just value of $5.3 million and sits at No. 46.
