Watts takes helm at Maitland Fire-Rescue HARRY SAYER BLACK TIE REPORTER

Will Watts didn’t have an epiphany where he realized he wanted to join public service. But he does remember the feeling he had as a high-school student when he helped rescue a drowning man in New Smyrna beach.

“Looking back, I remember the feeling I got when that went down,” Watts said. “Now I am where I am, and I love that part of the job where you can make a difference and see the look in someone’s eye. They don’t even have to say anything. They just look at you and know you and your team made a difference.”

After nearly 18 years of making a

difference in Maitland, Watts has been appointed as the new Fire Chief for the city’s Fire Rescue department.

BEGINNINGS

Like many figures in fire rescue, Watts, 41, comes from a public service family. His father was a retired deputy sheriff with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

After deciding that law enforcement wasn’t for him, Watts attended an EMT orientation at Seminole State College.

He started working an ambulance job in Orange County for three years while in firefighting and paramedic school at Seminole State. He finally was accepted as a firefighter/EMT with the city of

“I just didn’t like (law enforcement’s) side of public safety and community help,” he said. “What got me into this job is that I’m a helper. I’m a nurturer, I want to do good for the community and make a difference out there. …

That’s where I wanted to go.”

Watts describes those first few years as having his eyes opened .

For all the training and schooling he went through, nothing could really prepare him for the intensity of actually being on the job.

His first call was to investigate an electrocution death.

Luckily, he had a strong mentor to lead him in the right direction.

Then-lieutenant Kim Neisler took Watts under her wing and advised him to help out in the department as often as he could.

Watts decided he always would be ready for a new position to open and continued to climb the ranks until he found himself as deputy fire chief in 2013. He was appointed to succeed Neisler last December.

“When I got put in the deputy chief position, I knew this was the office I wanted to sit in,” Watts said. “Like I have done my entire career — I jumped in head first.”

It’s clear Maitland is trying to embrace the future, and Watts wants his department to be ready for when it does.

The city’s population is slowly becoming denser with the addition of apartments and other multi-family living spaces, which poses new challenges for the department: How to protect a changing city?

“We have to evaluate every response, the traffic patterns, the number of calls each one of these facilities is putting on our services,” Watts said. “If we have someone stuck on a balcony or a window washer stuck on the side of a commercial building, how do we rescue that person? That’s something the fire department 10 or 15 years ago didn’t have to be concerned with.”

It ultimately comes to possibly needing additional staff and new tactics, Watts said. The department currently is evaluating if new training is needed. Watts also wants to renew its accreditations standards and lower the city’s insurance service rating, which currently stands at a two.

Like Neisler, Watts wants to continue to emphasize mental health and care for his firefighters.

“You see people at their absolute worst (on the job),” Watts said. “I’ll often times get asked, ‘What’s the worst thing you’ve ever seen?’

And I say, ‘You don’t even want to know.’ If there’s something worse out there, I don’t even want to know about it. … Nothing can prepare you for that.”

It’s not uncommon to see Winter Park locals running through the streets early on weekends to help raise money for a cause or a nonprofit.

On Valentine’s Day, though, you may spot something different — a number of women golfing to fight breast cancer.

The Winter Park Women’s Golf Association is hosting its “Playing for a Purpose” tournament fundraiser to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Rally for the Cure initiative Feb. 14.

“We’re a women’s organization; several of our members have been breast-cancer survivors,” said women’s golf league member and fundraiser volunteer Mary Ann Garner. “All of us know someone, family or friend, who has been touched by the disease. We figured it would be a good cause for us to support and we love playing golf.”

Feb. 14 will mark almost 19 years since league member Lee Ann Johnson received her first mammogram and was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. She considers it an anniversary of sorts — one she wants to celebrate with nine holes of golf to help others.

“I had a mastectomy, reconstruction and four treatments of chemotherapy,” Johnson said.

“I’m alive and kicking and playing golf.”

groups of players — 36 in total — will start off at different holes throughout the course. The $12 entry fee covers the Panera Bread lunch and places players in a raffle to win gift cards and other prizes.

“Playing for a Purpose” had a quick turnaround — the group agreed to put on the fundraiser and began planning the game in December. It’s been a few years since the last golf fundraiser — which raised about $700 — and

the new goal is to raise even more, according to Johnson.

The Winter Park golf group has an eclectic mix of 30-plus members from Winter Park, Casselberry, Orlando and everywhere inbetween, Garner said. They range in age and come from all sorts of socioeconomic backgrounds.

Garner said she actually plays with one of her junior high school teachers.

The association often is accom-

panied by snowbirds and others who can’t be part of the group full time but still wish to play. The group welcomes women to join whenever they wish.

“Even though we’re gals that competitively play golf with one another, it’s not just about ourselves,” Johnson said. “We’re interested in helping other women. … I just couldn’t be more proud to be part of this group and this event.”

isten up Winter Park, because these 12 Wildcats are ready to sing your socks off.

Naughty Scotty and the Octapella, a tenor-bass a cappella ensemble comprising Winter Park High School students, is singing its heart out and currently working toward its fourth recording project.

The 12-piece group, under the direction of Winter Park High School Director of Choral Activities Matthew Swope, continues to garner attention with its hypnotizing harmonies — showcased on two albums and an EP. The a cappella outfit’s work has brought them to numerous major stages over the years, including the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York and the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston.

But when Naughty Scotty isn’t out on the road playing in a historic venue, Winter Parkers usually can hear them sing together at local Track Shack races and Winter Park High School events.

Other Winter Park Wildcats may have heard them around the hallways on Valentine’s Day, because the group is frequently commissioned to perform for unsuspecting valentines in a surprise singing telegram.

“It’s kind of become a pretty significant public face of our program, in addition to many of our traditional ensembles who also do a lot in the community,” Swope said. “It’s definitely a brotherhood. It’s definitely a family for sure.”

THE BEGINNING

The singing squad was first started in the fall of 2008, when some male students approached Swope about starting a group.

Auditions were held shortly after, the first group was formed, and it’s evolved into a formal group over time. Naughty Scotty and the Octapella, an extracurricular activity outside of the classroom, originally started with nine singers but has since grown to 12.

Their repertoire has grown as well, ranging from barbershop and doo-wop to contemporary a cappella music performed by groups such as the Pentatonix and on shows such as “The Sing-Off.” “A cappella has given me a smaller community within the chorus program,” senior Jake Rotz said. “When I originally joined, I was kind of hesitant if I wanted to do it or not, but then afterwards — this is my second year in it — (I realized) that every opportunity we get is so special. It’s a really awesome experience being a part of the group.”

Junior Jeremy Roldan agreed.

“We’re all really close — I feel like every rehearsal we go to we get a little bit closer,” he said.

“We’ve been able to create some pretty incredible music throughout the years.”

ON RECORD

In 2016, Naughty Scotty decided to venture down the road of recording and has since released three major projects: “Eight Arms,” an album that dropped later that year; “Rise — Songs of Hope and Villainy,” a collaboration with the school’s all-female group Take 7 released in 2017; and “Three Hearts,” an EP of three songs released last year.

The titles “Eight Arms” and “Three Hearts” play into the group’s mascot: an octopus, Swope said.

“That’s their logo — an octopus has eight arms, it has three hearts and technically has nine brains, but we’re not going that direction right now,” Swope said, with a laugh.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? So where did the name Naughty Scotty and the Octapella come from?

Swope said the name is actually a mix of several names suggested by that first group of singers back in 2008.

“The name that emerged was kind of a merging of several different ideas — somebody had mentioned something with ‘Octapella,’ because they thought that had a great ring to it; there was a kid named Scotty in the first group (as well),” Swope said. “Somebody had also suggested the Naughty Nine, but I didn’t like the ring of that. Once they suggested putting all these ideas together … I was like ‘Hey, I can live with that.’”

The recording process gives the members of the group a special and unique experience. A producer from The Vocal Company — an a cappella recording company based in the Northeast — travels all the way down to Winter Park High School to record.

“That’s really kind of helped push the group forward and been a really great challenge for the boys and a really great opportunity,” Swope said.

The boys track the vocals and the content is then edited and mixed. It’s then mastered by another company called Vocal Mastering before it is made available to the public on CD, iTunes and Spotify.

ACCOLADES

Naughty Scotty and the Octapella has received plenty of recognition and acclaim for the finished products. In 2017 and 2018, a track

from each of their albums was chosen for Best of High School A Capella — a special compilation album put forth each year by Varsity Vocals based in Chicago.

That 2018 song — “Giants,” featuring Naughty Scotty and Take 7 — also was featured on a compilation called Voices Only 2018, and the boys group has been nominated for a total of three Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards — the equivalent of Grammys for a cappella music, Swope said.

“Giants” was named runnerup for Best High School Song of the Year in 2018, placing both of Winter Park’s singing groups in the spotlight.

“They’re individual groups and they have their very distinct goals and their very distinct identities,” Swope said. “I would say as a teacher they bring out different aspects in my own personality and my own passions in terms of music, but they consider themselves to be one big a cappella family, as well.”

Now, the group is in the midst of fundraising its next major recording project: a Disney album.

“We’re going to have some kind of untraditional, unexpected songs in there and represented on the album, as well as some classic favorites,” Swope said. “We’re pretty excited about that project, because we’re trying some new things that we haven’t done before. We have a tie-in with the alumni of NSO — we have about 18 alumni coming back from the period of 2009 to 2018, representing the very first class of the group through the most current.

There will be a collaborative track with current members and alumni.”

Another collaborative track will include all the men in the Winter Park High School choral department, totaling about 60 singers.

“Between the alumni, the second collaborative effort, plus the current group, we’ll kind of show hopefully the past, the present and the future of the group and bring even more awareness to male singing at Winter Park High School,” Swope said.

The group hopes to record the upcoming Disney-themed album in early March, he said.

the community since it opened in 2013 and that Rollins College would like to see it grow.

The expansion would further support the students at Rollins College in the form of scholarships from the Harold Alfond Foundation, Stark said. Net operating income from the Alfond Inn will be directed to the scholarship fund for the hotel’s first 25 years or until the endowment principal reaches $50 million.

More than 50 full scholarships have been awarded to incoming students.

“The Alfond Inn, on all accounts, I hope you would agree, has been a wonderful success for the region, for the community and certainly for Rollins College,” Stark said. “The expansion of the inn will help Rollins continue to offer the best and the brightest students from throughout the world the opportunity to attend through our Alfond scholars program. It just does tremendous things for the college and for our institution worldwide.”

It’s an expansion project meant

to complement the existing features of the hotel, said Tim Baker, of architecture firm Baker Barrios, which designed the hotel’s first phase.

The additions would meet the growing demand for rooms within the hotel, but the project also would include more back-ofhouse space for the staff, Baker said.

A new dedicated car lane that runs between New England Avenue and the hotel building also would allow valet parking employees to drive into the onsite parking lot without clogging traffic in front of the hotel.

“Currently what is an issue on special events is the valet stacking, so in this particular solution, when we expand into the phase two Alfond, we’re looking to do a stacking lane that runs parallel to New England and allows us to stretch out that valet operational opportunity to get much more cars within the property and taking the pinch point off of New England, which will help with the flow of the valet service but also the bottlenecking at the existing drop-off entrance,” Baker said.

The architect also confirmed the expansion is self-contained and doesn’t encroach on the property of the Winter Park Public Library next door. As for the additional parking required for the expansion, the hotel plans to continue relying on the nearby SunTrust parking garage for its needs.

Residents spoke in overwhelming support of the project. Many locals said the only issue they have had with the existing hotel, at times, is finding available rooms.

“A hotel is doing pretty well in the 60% occupancy rate, and you all kind of stay up in the 94% occupancy rate year-round,” Winter Park Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Betsy Gardner Eckbert said. “I love my problems as chamber of commerce president, but we have a full hotel, and we really need to provide more opportunities.

“Clearly the chamber’s position on this would be to see this expansion approved,” she said.

“We look forward to continuing our rigorous and hearty partnership with the Alfond Inn.”

“(The Alfond Inn) is simply a treasure — it’s a jewel,” resident Sigrid Tiedtke said. “It’s a brilliant piece of work on so many levels. … We fully support the expansion.”

The project for the Alfond Inn was approved unanimously and is set to go before the Winter Park City Commission Monday, Feb. 25.

GARAGE GETS APPROVAL

Rollins College also received P&Z approval of a new 784-space parking garage on its campus.

The new garage, set for the southwest corner of Fairbanks and Ollie avenues, would be built on top of an existing surface parking lot and result in 596 net new spaces on campus.

Winter Park Planning Manager Jeff Briggs said the new garage being on the south side of Fairbanks Avenue would potentially free up parking spaces in the existing SunTrust parking garage across the street, making room for the parking requirements for the Alfond Inn expansion and potentially other opportunities.

A special partnership between Rollins College and the Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting at Full Sail University was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 19, as legendary sportscaster Dan Patrick stepped into the announcing booth with some of his students to call a Rollins College home basketball game.

The award-winning sportscaster and radio personality had a chance to give students from the sportscasting school some tips and insight in a live game situation.

It was a learning experience made possible by an ongoing partnership that allows students of the sportscasting school to call sporting events at Rollins College for WPRK 91.5 FM. Students have the chance to call and provide commentary for soccer, lacrosse, basketball and just about every other sport offered at Rollins.

“You have to have practical experience, and to be able to do play-by-play or color commentating or if you’re going to be a camera man, I want you to be out doing things in the real world,”

Patrick said. “This is close as the students will get, thanks to the relationship with Rollins College. They said, ‘Come on in.

Our campus is your campus. Our sports are your sports. Come in and cover them. That is such a godsend for these students.’”

Patrick said it is critical to get reps calling games in a real-life scenario.

“What do you say, how are you saying it and less is more — get in to say something to get out to allow your analyst to come in and complement what you’re saying,” Patrick said. “If you’re doing radio, you have to describe everything. If it’s TV you have to complement what we’re seeing.

“They’re learning all of these things, and that’s where you’re going to make mistakes. But you can make a mistake before you make the mistake when you get a real job. I made my mistakes in the real world. They’re making their mistakes now in front of their students — that’s a far better way to learn.”

Rollins College President Grant Cornwell said it’s been a great relationship so far with Full Sail.

It’s nice to play a part in giving the sportscasting students some hands-on experience with learning their craft, he said.

Providing a learning environment in which students can hone their craft ties into one of the main reasons Patrick started the school in the first place, he said.

“I just want to provide you with the answers to the test — that if you go to ESPN, this is what they’re going to ask you when you go in,” Patrick said. “This is what you need to know.”

inter Park is considered by most to be an arts mecca — and the city agrees.

Starting Feb. 15 and concluding Feb. 18, the city of Winter Park once again will display its artistic and culture side with the second annual Weekend of the Arts initiative.

The Winter Park Arts and Culture Alliance, comprising 18 arts and culture organizations and nonprofits throughout the city, has returned this year with a new schedule of cultural events, activities and art showcases to show off what makes Winter Park special.

Svetlana and the Delancey Five are bringing jazzy tunes to the Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts.

Winter Park is showing its artistic side once again with the second annual Weekend of the Arts.

The Winter Park Playhouse is offering a discount for its jazzy “Ain’t Misbehavin’ - The Fats Waller Musical Show” throughout the entirety of the arts weekend.

The energetic production examines the accomplishments of Fats Waller, the iconic 30s musician who set the stage for modern jazz.

“You’re taking a step back in time to the ’30s at the Cotton Club in Harlem; you’re seeing these numbers done in the style the performers did back in those days,” Artistic Director Roy Alan said. “It’s a great chance to see performances people don’t get to see these days, it’s a different style of entertainment.”

Alan said the theater has wanted to produce this particular show for the last 17 years but just hasn’t been able to bring together the right cast. This musical season, though, the stars aligned.

The performers, including both playhouse newcomers and veterans, offer a variety of different styles and energies. They will be backed by a six-person band led

by Chris Leavy. What’s more, the theater will have period-specific costumes and an elaborate, lavish backdrop to imitate the 1930s Cotton Club.

The production ends Feb. 23.

The 11-member group sings a variety of genres — from gospel music to Disney tunes — but the Feb. 16 production will have a handful of brand-new pieces written for both the Voctaves and the Bach Festival Orchestra.

Sinclair and Ray have a long history. Ray was a student at Rollins and had Sinclair as his academic adviser before earning his master’s degree in New York City.

“My hope is that the many colors that an orchestra can give will just further the experience of listening to these great arrangements,” Sinclair said. “The analogy is they’ve been using the 44-pack of crayons, and now, they’re using the 144pack of crayons. We can give them more color, more lines underneath them.”

The Weekend of the Arts also includes a free performance from Grammy-winning organist Paul Jacobs Feb. 15.

“He might be the most famous organist of our time,” Sinclair said.

“He made musical history once, at the age of 23, when he played all of Bach’s complete organ works within 18 hours. It’s crazy stuff.”

BLUE BAMBOO CENTER

The Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts books its performers far in advance, but co-owner Melody Cortez said she and her husband, Chris Cortez, made sure to include some special shows for the Weekend of the Arts.

Svetlana and The Delancey Five, a New York-based jazz quintet, will premiere on Valentine’s Day and continue to perform swing music Friday, Feb. 15. The Ben Rosenblum Trio will pick things up Feb. 16 with some jazzy tunes. Rossano Sportiello, Nicki Parrott and Eddie Metz will end the weekend Feb. 17 with an afternoon and evening show.

Sportiello, Parrott and Metz have been performing together since 2008.

For the second Weekend of the Arts, the Winter Park History Museum and WUCF will be presenting “Be My Neighbor!” Day, a family-focused celebration of Mr. Rogers and being a good neighbor, Feb. 16.

“People come by the thousands,” Winter Park History Museum executive director Susan Skolfield said. “Last year’s event had at least 3,000 people. It really is something.”

The event will have a number of hands-on activity tents throughout Central Park, managed by 32 WUCF staff members and Winter Park police and fire-rescue members, where families can play games and learn how to be a good citizen, Skolfield said.

WUCF and WPHM cycle out games and activities each year, but an event mainstay is Daniel Tiger from the titular “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” PBS show.

The Winter Park History Museum once again will present a number of educational panels on the life and impact of Mr. Rogers. The display started as a pop-up exhibit in 2015. Rogers, a Rollins College graduate, was closely connected to Winter Park throughout his life and stayed close with many in the Rollins Music department.

Janvier Miller remembers her first experience with Winter Park — she was not a fan.

“My grandmother lived in Winter Park, and I had to go down and visit during Christmas,” she said. “I didn’t like to go.”

Quite a few things happened since those holiday trips to Winter Park. She grew up, became an artist, fell in love and married fellow artist Gustaf Miller, and had a long and fruitful career. Now, the two have returned to Winter Park to display some art of their own.

The Millers have their works displayed at the Crealdé School of Art in Winter Park.

The Millers met while studying art at the University of Syracuse 56 years ago. They started as classmates, then friends and eventually became a couple. They married right out of school and spent their first year married in Italy, along with their newborn child.

Gus said they didn’t spend much time making art during their time abroad — there was a baby to look after — but made sure to take the occasional class and visit several of the art museums.

They soon found themselves in Massachusetts, where they raised their son and opened their first gallery. They eventually opened another gallery in Cape Cod. Jan and Gus have many of their art pieces on display across B o s to n ’s a r t

scene, including some of Gus’ watercolor paintings in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

As soon as the kids left the nest, Jan and Gus moved to Vero Beach.

There, they met Crealdé curator Barbara Tiffany more than a decade ago. Eventually, the Millers and Tiffany agreed they should have a show.

But with the school’s long lead time and busy schedule, it just didn’t end up happening for three years.

“I remember us thinking, ‘Are we still even going to be alive in three more years?’” Jan said.

At long last, the exhibit has opened with a collection of more than 30 paintings, pots, statues and ceramics created by the Millers’ hands.

“There’s an energy to (the exhibit),” Tiffany said. “It’s fun, and their personalities come out through their work. The paintings by Jan are expressionistic, very contem-

When she’s tired of that, it’s back to painting. Jan paints in her studio in the mornings, and then Gus will head over to paint or sculpt later in the day.

Through sculpting, Jan and Gus enjoy the physical touch of creating something with their hands.

Gus makes ceramic planters for his bonsai trees with clay and ceramics, as well.

“Paintings are all thought,” Jan said. “You have to think all the time. … We use everything we make (with ceramics).

A standout addition to the Winter Park exhibit is a collaborative painting. The painting started as one of Jan’s simple sketches, and Gus later added to it. The painting, called “Kiss Me,” depicts two older people kissing. They said it was a fun piece to create, and that’s what keeps them creating to this day.

“It’s just fun,” Gus said. “And we don’t know how to do anything else.”
