amily and friends gathered Saturday, Feb. 3, for the formal dedication of VanderLey Park in Oakland.

The park, at 117 Gulley Ave., previously had been named, but town commissioners and staff made it official with the unveiling of a plaque bearing the late Jon VanderLey’s image and accomplishments.

VanderLey served as Oakland’s mayor from 1998 to 2004.

Speakers included Mayor Kathy Stark, Commissioner Mike Satterfield, Town Manager Dennis Foltz and several members of VanderLey’s family. State Rep. Bobby Olszewski presented Kay VanderLey with a tribute from his office.

“Jon would have been surprised,” Kay said of Saturday’s ceremony. “He didn’t think anyone was watching what he was doing.”

VanderLey is considered the catalyst for many improvements in the town, including construction of the police and fire stations, restoration of the town center and improvements to Speer Park and the water utility service. He was instrumental in starting Oakland Avenue Charter School, as well.

Bulk goods store opens in Winter Garden April Nobles offers fresh baking ingredients, candies, nuts and more at her new bulk shop, The Bulk Pantry.

April Nobles was inspired to open her own bulk-food store in Winter Garden after visiting one with her parents in the Tampa area. It was her first time in such a store, and she was impressed by the choices available to customers, she said.

Nobles, a stay-at-home mother for nearly five years, was ready to do something outside of the house now that her children are in school. She and her father had been brainstorming ideas, and she thought there could be a market for a bulk-item business in Winter Garden.

When the appropriate-sized space became available at the end of last year, Nobles jumped on the opportunity.

This month, she debuted her new store, The Bulk Pantry, located in the Tri-City Shopping Center on the northeast corner of South Dillard Street and West

The shop sells a variety of snack items and cooking and baking ingredients, including dried fruits and vegetables, nuts, flours, rice, granola mixes, coffees (by the cup and packaged whole bean), soup mixes, candies (including sugar free) and spices.

Nobles also brews coffee daily.

Options include Cafe Cubano and a signature roast, Good Morning Winter Garden, a mediumroast blend created by Sweetwater Organic in Gainesville.

There are catchy daily specials offering 10% off, including MixIt-Up Monday, which features

soups and trail mixes; Tate’s Tuesdays, which applies to all Tate’s cookies; and the Waste “Less” Wednesday offer, which applies to customers taking in their own containers. Spices are buy-oneget-one-free on Saturdays.

When baking, sometimes all the chef needs is a pinch of “this.”

So one rack is dedicated to jars of items — such as ginger, nutmeg and turmeric — that can be purchased by the teaspoon.

Nobles is working to expand her shop’s website to include recipes and has several she is considering, possibly even some family recipes.

“I have a good one — my grandmother’s recipe,” she said. “It’s one of those things that pulls on our heartstrings. Is this something I want to share, or do I keep it in the family?”

The recipes she selects will definitely include ingredients sold in her store, she said.

Assisting her still today is her dad, Scott Nickerson, who is at the store most days.

“We’ve gone through every step of it together, and I couldn’t have done it without him and his background and knowledge (of business),” Nobles said.

upcycled products that suggest a hometown feel, she said.

“You won’t come into the store and see a lot of commercialized big-box-store anything,” she said. “Everything in here has been repurposed from some other use at some point. That’s the feel I wanted. We’re not going to have the metal shelving.”

The Bulk Pantry is giving Nobles a chance to offer a bit of herself to the community, and she is eager to meet residents who share her passion for quality ingredients.

“It’s been on my heart,” she said.

“I’ve been in retail all my life, and I’ve worked for big companies and individual companies, and I’ve seen the good and the bad. You take all of that, and you put it all together, and you open your own thing and hope that it all turns out.

“I felt like it would fit in with the vision the community has, and I thought it was a good fit for the community and for myself,” Nobles said.

The wait is over, and the tacos are officially in town.

4 Locos Tacos — a new, authentic Mexican taqueria — has operated in soft-opening mode for two weeks but celebrated its official grand opening Friday, Feb. 2.

The name, which translates to “four crazies,” derives from a playful reference to the four brothers who own and operate it — Victor, Adolfo, Adrian and Joaquin Galvan.

The Galvan family owns restaurants in its hometown of Jalisco in West Central Mexico, but the brothers have lived in the Winter Garden area since they were kids.

Their goal is to bring that same, authentic Mexican flavor from their family’s hometown.

“What we’re doing is trying to bring authentic (Mexican) food to the people and take care of the people,” said co-owner Victor Galvan.

This is their first 4 Locos location, with a second planned and in the design phase for Ocoee. The idea came more than 18 months

ago, after a suggestion from the owner of neighboring Crooked Can Brewing Company. “(He was) telling me, ‘You should put a Mexican restaurant here,’” Victor Galvan said. “I thought we would do a Mexican street-taco concept. You don’t get the authentic (Mexican flavor) anywhere else, and that pushed us even more.”

Now, instead of a street-taco concept, the Galvans have a 1,200-square-foot restaurant, complete with an open-kitchen concept that allows guests to watch their food as it is made from scratch.

Victor Galvan said that’s one of the unique things about 4 Locos: There is no freezer, and everything is fresh and made from scratch daily. The key is the “4 Locos touch,” which he said entails preparing meals with a loving touch.

“I’m here to help the people who really like the taste of authentic Mexican food,” Victor Galvan said. “We do it from the heart; we don’t do it from a plan. We’re not a franchise. Everything we do is like we would do at home.”

And when word first got out that 4 Locos was doing a soft opening, the response was quick.

They weren’t fully prepared for the swift reaction and the crowds that showed up to try one of the newest additions to Winter Garden, Victor Galvan said.

“The response has been great,” he said. “There’s people that walk in the door and jump very happy and say, ‘Thank God we have a real Mexican restaurant here.’ We thought it was going to be a few people (during the soft opening). … Every day, it was packed.”

And with everything from tacos, burritos and tortas to quesadillas, flautas and nachos on the menu, there’s a little taste of Mexico for everyone in the community. Drinks include beers, flavored waters, fountain drinks and even micheladas — a Mexican drink that consists of your choice of beer with assorted sauces, spices, fruits and more.

“We do what we love; we care, and we’re trying our best to do authentic,” Victor Galvan said.

“Whatever we’re doing, we’re doing from the heart. That’s it.”

Several peace and justice groups are collaborating to present a program that includes a screening of the award-winning short film “Ocoee: Legacy of the Election Day Massacre.” It takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The program also is being presented at Valencia College’s east, west and Osceola campuses and at Seminole State College; in two Winter Park locations; and

in the Parramore neighborhood of Orlando.

Maxwell is past chairman of the city of Ocoee Human Relations Diversity Board and has lived in Ocoee for almost 23 years.

“The Peace and Justice Institute at Valencia College has embarked upon an educational process to try and educate the public on the historical significance of the 1920 Election-Day massacre that took place 98 years ago,” Maxwell said.

“We thought it was a pretty good gesture to go to the different communities, present the film and answer questions and educate people on what really did happen.”

bers of the white community. An argument ensued, and the two men left. Norman returned with a shotgun, and this angered the white people, who formed a mob and began burning black-owned buildings and residences.

Perry was hanged, members of the black community fled or were killed, and Ocoee became an allwhite city for the next 61 years.

Following the film, a discussion panel consisting of a scholar, Valencia College history professor Heather Bryson; Maxwell; and a historian will talk about the racial incident and look at its impact on local race relations.

Funding for the program, “1920 Ocoee Massacre and Beyond: Paths to Truth and Reconciliation,” was provided through a grant from the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The traveling display visited neighborhoods throughout the city from Dec. 11 through 16.

At about 9:50 a.m., a lawenforcement officer responded to a call about a traffic crash at 628 Windermere Road. According to a homeowner in the area, a vehicle crashed into a ditch in front of his residence where the roadway ends. The homeowner assumed the crash likely happened overnight and was made aware by his lawn-maintenance crew that someone had been lurking around the vehicle earlier that morning. After the officer ran the tag, it was discovered the vehicle was the same one that had fled from a Winter Garden police officer around 2 a.m. near the area of Marshall Farms and Windermere roads. The officer determined the driver likely did not realize Windermere Road ended in a cul-de-sac. The male owner of the vehicle was not found at his registered address, but he was located later that afternoon at an Orange County Courthouse. The vehicle owner approached the officer to ask questions about how to obtain a vehicle that had been towed.

Having just viewed a photo of his driver’s license, the officer immediately recognized the owner and asked him to elaborate on the reason why his vehicle had been towed. The owner initially stated he had left it illegally parked overnight at the Winter Garden Village shopping center but later told the truth once the officer expressed skepticism. The owner was placed under arrest and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.

A store manager reported a shoplifter had pushed him and ran away from the store with some heat lamps and heating pads typically used for enclosures containing reptiles.

The suspected shoplifter was last seen headed toward the HoneyBaked Ham store in the same shopping plaza. The officer found the male suspect at the described location and questioned his whereabouts before having entered the shop.

The suspect shared he had visited the pet store to purchase heating pads for his pet lizard, selected some items and walked to the dog food section.

There, he was approached by a store employee who allegedly pushed him and told him to leave the store. An argument ensued, and he recorded the last part of the altercation on his cell phone, which he showed the officer. According to the report, the video was poor quality but arguing could be heard. When asked about the reptile-heating supplies located in the passenger seat of his truck, the suspect stated he had had it for a while, insisting that he was innocent and the whole incident was just a misunderstanding. The man was later arrested and charged with retail theft and resisting a merchant after the store manager explained the suspect had been seen trying to conceal the reptile-heating supplies inside his jacket.

Since Maddie Conover was a little girl, she’s always wanted to be famous. Today, the 19-year-old Foundation Academy alumna is on her way to making that dream come true as she gears up for an upcoming tour with contemporary Christian band Beautiful Mess.

The two-month tour will run from late March to early June.

Conover will be singing lead female vocals during the tour alongside lead male vocalist Tim Erhart. She said the band has about 20 shows booked around the northeast United States, with performances in Massachusetts, New York and more.

“Syracuse, New York, is like the home base of the tour, so we’re (going to be) in Syracuse a lot,” Conover said.

Although she’s on her way to making her aspirations of fame a reality, she didn’t take the idea of pursuing a career in music seriously until she took choir at Foundation Academy with Mark Goff, the school’s praise band and vocal director.

“He has such a high standard for kids,” she said. “He pushed me to be the best singer I could be and the best person I could be.

(He) just made feel like I could accomplish that, like I could be a singer one day if I wanted to do it as a career.”

Goff said Conover was timid at first and unsure of her abilities.

“After hearing her voice though, I was encouraged to push her forward,” he said. “It took some time, patience, guidance and a lot of different performance experiences for her to gain the confi-

dence she needed. She became a good part singer first and then a strong soloist.

“However, once she discovered she could really sing, she certainly ‘got the singing bug,’” Goff said.

“She had always been a big fan of professional singers, both secular and Christian, so when these things came together, her motivation to sing and learn music was never again an issue.”

Prior to taking the stage, Conover said she struggles with a little stage fright.

“I used to get violently ill,” she said. “I still do, before I perform in front of people. … I still get stage fright, but I just push through it.

It’s pretty bad anxiety, but as soon as I get on stage, I get over it. I keep doing it to try and conquer that fear.”

In addition to singing, Conover also plays piano. Although she’ll be singing in a Christian band this spring, she said she prefers writing secular music.

“I don’t write Christian music,” she said. “I try to, but I’m not very good at it. It’s very hard to do.

Adele is kind of like my inspiration for music, so I kind of write the sad love songs. … That’s what I’m good at.

“She’s (Adele) very different; I like that she wasn’t like the norm,” Conover said. “She had her style.

She dressed for her body. I loved that she wasn’t like your average pop star. She had her own style, and she totally rocked it.”

Further down the road, Conover hopes to release her own song.

She said her biggest dream is to tour the world performing her own music.

“I would like to be the next Adele,” she said.

For the second-consecutive year, the annual Trash 2 Trends Recycled Fashion Show, held Saturday, Feb. 3, at SeaWorld Orlando, was sold out.

Hosted by Keep Orlando Beautiful, the fashion runway show challenges designers to craft high-end fashion from recycled items and waste, such as plastic bags, newspapers, bubble wrap, straws, plastic bags, cardboard boxes, vinyl records, CDs and more. The models strutted down the runway in front of nearly 500 attendees wearing intricate custom-designed outfits and accessories carefully pieced together after weeks to months of labor.

Designer Ben Van Beuskom crafted a dress appropriately titled “Evolutionary Irma” using debris left behind by Hurricane Irma. Another outfit — created by Meaghan Moreno and named “Unidos Contigos” — paid tribute to Puerto Rico to honor those lost and affected by Hurricane Irma and Maria.

At the end of the show, the three judges — Maxine Earhart, Barbara Hartley and Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan — awarded five of the 32 designers.

From fall-off-the-bone ribs and mouth-watering pulled pork to blistering guitar licks and soulful singing, the seventh annual Winter Garden Blues and BBQ festival promises to satisfy anyone yearning for a touch of Southern style.

Scheduled from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the city’s downtown pavilion, this year’s musical lineup will feature Ari & The Alibis (4 p.m.), followed by Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones (6 p.m.) and Albert Castiglia (8 p.m.). Daniel Ray Blevins, age 50, of Ocoee, Florida, went to be with his Lord at 1 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, while at Florida Hospital.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, he moved in 1979 to Florida. He was the devoted son of Jack Blevins (deceased) and the sweet Geraldine Blevins (McMinn). He was also like a son to John and Pat Bass and neighbors Don and Robbie Fannin.

On May 6, 2012, he was married to his beloved wife, April Dillon, whom he first met when they were students at West Orange High School. He was a warm, loving, smart, quickwitted person who was always thoughtful. He believed in God and doing the right thing. He loved to play his guitar and was a computer whiz. He was quick to forgive, with loads of patience, and loved by many.

Dallas Edward Duppenthaler, age 99, of Winter Garden, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018. He was born Nov. 10, 1918, in Blue River, Wisconsin, and was the son of the late Edward Robert and Clara Jane Duppenthaler.

He was a graduate of University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was inducted into the University of Washington Hall of Fame in 1986 for rowing. His row team was favored to win the 1941 Olympics in Finland but was canceled due to the war. He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. James Cook, 80, of Ocoee, Florida, went to be with the Lord at his home at 1:15 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 2, surrounded by his family. He was born Sept.

11, 1937.

James graduated from Mayfield High School, Mayfield, Kentucky, and attended Freed-Hardeman and Murray state colleges. James served in the U.S. Army from 1961-63.

He was married to Elizabeth Woodson for 54 years, and they had a daughter, Donna, and a son, Terry. They moved to Ocoee, Florida, in 1969, and he worked for a construction company at Walt Disney World.

He owned several businesses, including Hurricane Battery Company and Bumble Bee Florist, and he was a process server until retirement.

For more than a decade, he coached the Little League District 14 Hawks and Twins teams. He was a member of the American Legion. He attended Ocoee Oaks United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Liz; daughter, Donna (Bill) Dollar, Ocoee; son, Terry (Debbie Insco), Knoxville, Tennessee; three grandsons, Scott William (Angel) Dollar, Palmyra, New York, Ryan Cook and Kevin Cook, of Apopka; one granddaughter, Diana (Brent) Patton, Gulfport, Mississippi; three greatgrandsons, Scotty (presenting serving in the U.S. Army), Dylan Dollar, Brent Patton Jr.; one great-granddaughter, Beth Patton; one brother, Carless (Sheryl) Cook, Lafayette, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

PATRICIA ANN MACIOSZEK DIED MONDAY, JAN. 29, 2018.

Patricia Ann Macioszek was born Jan. 2, 1946, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Sara. She remained in Pennsylvania until December 1962, when she was married to Walter Macioszek (becoming Patricia Ann Macioszek) and moved to Ohio to raise children.

She was a strong-willed woman, but equally kind and generous. On Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at 2:15p.m., she lost her battle with cancer.

She is survived by four children: Timothy Wade, Thomas Stanley, Sherri Ann and Steven Lee. She is also survived by two sisters: Doris Murray and Maymie Burns, whom she loved dearly.

She was a good wife, great mother and dear friend to all who knew her. Her favorite conversations were always memories of her childhood and her family, and we would all laugh and smile often with her stories.

Not being one to attract attention to herself, her wishes were to have no ceremony and to be cremated.

William “Bill” Ford, age 87, of New Smyrna Beach, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Halifax Health Medical Center, Daytona Beach. Born in Medford, Massachusetts, Bill came to the area in 1998 from South Florida. He served in the U.S. Army and owned a forms business in Miami.

Bill was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and enjoyed golf and tennis. He was in the baseball farm system with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Bill was a die-hard Clemson fan and loved his Saturdays at the beach.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Family was his life, and he will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

George C. Spigener Jr., 82, of Winter Garden, Florida, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018, at home.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, George attended both Virginia Military Institute and the University of Alabama, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps.

In 1970, he and his family moved to Winter Garden. For much of his life, George was an avid outdoorsman, pilot and boater and was involved in a variety of business interests.

When Ashton Baptiste took the job as the head coach for the boys soccer program at Foundation Academy a little more than four years ago, he told Athletic Director David Baginski that — within five years — the Lions would be built into a playoff-caliber program.

He only needed four.

Two days after Foundation Academy defeated International Community School Jan. 31 in the semifinals of the Class 1A, District 4 Tournament — which secured the second playoff berth in the program history — the Lions were back on the field Feb. 2 at The Geneva School’s athletic complex in Casselberry.

This time, it was Circle Christian the Lions faced in the district final. After a scoreless first half, Nathan Wilkerson converted a goal out of a corner kick set in the match’s 65th minute.

The Ocoee Knights were all smiles moments after winning the program’s first state championship.

It has been an achievement 13 years in the making, but the Ocoee High Knights have their first state championship in a team sport.

One year after the Ocoee High competitive cheerleading team finished as runner-up in the Medium — Non-Tumbling division for Class 2A, the Knights surged forward and won it all Feb. 4 at the FHSAA 2018 Competitive Cheerleading State Championships in Gainesville.

Ocoee’s score of 77.40 bested runner-up Lakeland’s 76.00 — and was a whopping 13.9 points better than the team’s performance in 2017.

“They were losing their minds,” head coach Kristin Johnson said.

“Half of them fell on the ground crying, and the other ones were jumping on each other.”

The program’s first state championship came in a season that had some rocky elements. Of the roughly 20 girls who tried out for the competition team, several left the team around the beginning of competition season. uper Bowl Weekend was good to the Ocoee Knights — and they didn’t even have to travel to icy Minneapolis.

First, junior Samantha Jefferson won an individual state championship Saturday, Feb. 3, at the FHSAA 2018 Girls Weightlifting State Championships in Panama City.

The achievement meant Jefferson joined her sister, Victoria — a 2017 Ocoee alumna — as the only state champions in school history.

The reign of the Jefferson sisters as Ocoee High’s only champions was short-lived, though.

One day later, the Knights competitive cheerleading team won the school’s third state championship — and its first team state championship — at the FHSAA 2018 Competitive Cheerleading State Championships in Gainesville.

It was Monday morning on campus at Ocoee High — two days after junior Samantha Jefferson had won an individual state championship in her weight class (183 pounds) at the FHSAA 2018 Girls Weightlifting State Championships — and the reality of her accomplishment was finally settling in.

“It literally hit me this morning,” Jefferson said, sporting a hooded sweatshirt from the event. “It’s like, ‘OK — you’re a state champion. You’re the second state champion at Ocoee High.’”

Jefferson bested her closest competitor by a whopping 40 pounds Feb. 3 at the championships in Panama City, lifting a combined 430 pounds. She is the second state champion — individual or team — in Ocoee High’s history. The first was her sister, Victoria, who won back-to-back girls weightlifting state titles in 2016 and 2017.

Jefferson’s total in Panama City broke down to 230 pounds on the benchpress and another 200 on the clean-and-jerk.

Jordan Preaster A newcomer to the Central Florida Christian Academy boys basketball team this season, Evans transfer Jordan Preaster has certainly made a good impression as the regular season nears its conclusion. The Eagles are 21-3 as of Feb. 4. Preaster is averaging 17.1 points per game — including two outings for 26 points — to go along with 7.9 rebounds per game, all while shooting 56% from the field. For his strong play, several Division I basketball programs have begun to show interest in the local teen.

Why did you decide to come to CFCA? One of the reasons was that it was so different and it is really diverse. There are a lot of people here that just want to succeed.

How do you think this season has gone so far?

It’s definitely gone great. I know I’m growing a lot, especially on the defensive end. …

I love the guys — they’re great guys, and everybody wants to see everyone do well. It’s just a great environment to play in.

What do you enjoy about playing for coach Jonathan McClintock?

He pushes me. … He just makes me think and play at a very high level — he wants me to be a high-level person, period.

How much do you enjoy playing with senior point guard Dante Treacy?

I love playing with Dante. He’s so unselfish, and he’s one of the best teammates I’ve ever played with. He’s the highestlevel guard I’ve ever played with.

Who is a player whose game you admire?

I would have to say, hands down, (Boston Celtics forward) Jayson Tatum. He’s one of the smoothest players. I’ve been watching him since he played in high school and he played with Malik Monk on his AAU team.

How did your interest in computers originate?

When I was in seventh grade, our computer broke down.

The monitor broke open, and I looked and I never knew all that stuff was in there. So, in eighth grade, I got into a technology class at Robinswood (Middle) and started learning to code. In ninth grade I got into digital design … it just became a fun topic to learn about.

“We had a lot of trials and tribulations this season,” Johnson said. “We had to completely revamp the team halfway through the season and bring up girls who probably weren’t really ready — and those young ladies were incredible.”

The Knights came together and — in both the regional meet and the state meet — set program records for points.

“It just amazes me,” Johnson said. “I couldn’t be more proud of how these girls rallied and became a team.”

The 2017-18 season was also Johnson’s first as head coach.

She served previously as an assistant in 2016-17 and as the junior varsity head coach in 2015-16.

The Knights, who also won district and regional championships this year, will now prepare for nationals.

Along the way, Jefferson leaned on the support of her family — especially her sister and her father, Greg, who trains her — as well has her coach at Ocoee, Brittney Walker.

“It was crucially important,” Jefferson said of her family’s support. “(Victoria) started the domino effect. … Her influence, my dad’s influence, my mom’s influence — everyone together. … It was really good for my first year doing weightlifting.”

Classmates and faculty likely will continue to congratulate Jefferson for a few days, but there’s no rest for the determined.

Now that she has had a taste of the mountaintop, the junior standout said she is even more motivated to keep improving.

“I’ve already started setting goals for next year,” Jefferson said. “I’m super motivated.”

District tournaments for boys basketball are set to begin Feb. 12, with district finals largely scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 16. Locally, six teams will compete for district crowns across four respective districts. All teams that reach their district final — whether they win or not — make the regional playoffs.

CLASS 9A, DISTRICT 3

Local team: West Orange (12-11) Location: Apopka High Full-court press: A coin toss gave the West Orange Warriors the edge over the Apopka Blue Darters for the top seed in the 9A-3 Tournament. Both West Orange and Apopka had gone 4-2 in district play, and the two teams split two regular-season meetings — the Blue Darters defeated the Warriors 65-64 on a buzzerbeater Jan. 9, and West Orange scored a 61-51 win Jan. 30. That means the Warriors will face No. 4 Wekiva at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at Apopka, while the tournament host Blue Darters will face No. 3 Evans. Recent years have demonstrated, though, that seeds do not count for too much in this ultra-competitive, parity-driven

CLASS 8A, DISTRICT 5

Local teams: Ocoee (6-16), Windermere (14-8) Location: Ocoee High Full-court press: Top-seed Edgewater (18-4) is undefeated in district play and will pose a daunting task for the other seven teams in 8A-5 when play begins at Ocoee High. Upstart Windermere High earned the tournament’s No. 3 seed, while Ocoee is the No. 7 seed. The Wolverines will play No. 5 East River in the tournament’s opening round, while the Knights will play No. 2 seed East Ridge.

Ocoee will need to play its best basketball to earn a third consecutive playoff berth under head coach John “Sarge” Siers, while first-year Windermere is just two wins away from adding a playoff berth to its list of improbable accomplishments in its inaugural run under head coach Mark Griseck. Windermere would have to defeat No. 2 seed East Ridge in the district semifinals to accomplish as much, although the Knights defeated the Wolverines in each of two regular-season match-ups.

that regular-season result.There will be no prolonged celebration for the winners, though, because top-seeded Orlando Christian Prep (13-9) — which went undefeated in district play — will await them. OCP defeated the two teams by a combined 81 points this season.

Local team: CFCA (21-3) Location: CFCA Full-court press: The quest for a third consecutive district title has seen the Eagles earn a 5-0

mark in district play this season.

Three of those wins came in blowouts — only Victory Christian and Vanguard came within reasonable striking distance of upsetting top-seeded CFCA. Despite their district dominance, don’t expect Coach Jonathan McClintock’s Eagles to sleep on any opponent. No. 2 seed (15-8) Victory Christian likely poses the biggest threat, and the top two seeds would meet in the district final.
