Dozens of neighbors near the Lake Avalon Rural Settlement presented their opposition to a proposed future land-use amendment during a recent Orange County community meeting.

Held Thursday, Jan. 31, at Whispering Oaks Elementary, the meeting’s topic at hand was a request to

change the future land-use designation of 9.08 acres at 3104 Avalon Road. The parcel sits just north of Avalon Road, west of Mann Road and east of Sanctuary Lake, within the Lake Avalon Rural Settlement.

She placed her clothing near her house and in other locations hoping Abbott will follow her scent and return home. A kind stranger met Rock with a rotisserie chicken, and they walked a path from a grocery store to Rock’s home, hoping to entice him with the aroma.

A pet psychic and an online volunteer from New York both have contacted Rock, but those haven’t panned out. She said a woman called and told her she had Abbott, but it turned out to be a scam. Luckily, Rock wasn’t comfortable with the situation, so she didn’t give the scammer any money.

She has received several messages from people saying they spotted Abbott behind a grocery store or running across a street, but that turned out to be another lost white dog.

People have been sending her photos of rescued dogs that resemble Abbott, but it’s never him.

“Being in rescue myself, I know that we find our fair share of dogs, and we assume that they’re dumped, but that’s not the case,” Rock said. “Even if a dog is in bad condition … it might have been missing for a month or more.”

If someone does, indeed, have her dog, she wants that person to know Abbott is very much loved and wanted back home. She said his companion, another chihuahua named Layla, senses Rock’s sadness and misses her buddy.

She has reached out to rescue groups, shelters, pet stores, vet-

erinarians and groomers, thinking Abbott might be taken in for a checkup or nail trim eventually.

She has distributed about 10 signs around Winter Garden and is in the process of making some sturdier ones to place along the roadways. She is creating a mass mailing — in both English and Spanish — for Winter Garden residents in her vicinity.

She bought 4,000 business cards with Abbott’s photo and her phone number and has been distributing them in the parking lots of shopping centers. She hired a company to make phone calls to people in a 20-mile radius.

Rock estimates she has spent $200 in her efforts to bring her dog home. To help offset the costs, she set up a GoFundMe page in case animal lovers want to make a donation. So far, she has received $225.

She wrote on one of her Facebook posts: “It often feels hopeless, but I remember a conversation I had in the parking lot of Aldi with a vet tech just yesterday. She said, ‘Don’t give up. We reunited a Husky with their owner after four months missing.’”

So Rock refuses to give up hope. She will keep distributing flyers and making sure her signs are up. And she will answer each phone call with anticipation.

“We are planning this big party if he is found,” Rock said with hope in her voice. “Everybody wants to meet him. And Abbott would love it, frankly. He would love it. He would be strutting around meeting everyone.”

Parents with children zoned for the new Bridgewater Middle relief school met their new principal and were allowed one-on-one time with her at a 40% construction meeting Wednesday, Jan. 30.

Bridgewater Middle hosted the meeting in the media center, and a large crowd of families attended to meet Michelle Thomas and ask questions regarding the new school in Horizon West’s Lakeside Village. The relief school will open in August.

Thomas comes from Dillard Street Elementary School, in Winter Garden, where she served as principal for two-and-onehalf years. She received her new assignment in early January.

She has been working since Jan. 23 to get her school ready in time for the 2019-20 school year.

Bridgewater Principal Andrew Jackson told parents: “There is no assistant principal, no secretary.

It’s a one-man show when you build a new school. Your kids are still Bobcats for a little while longer.”

Parents were most concerned about the course offerings and whether they will be similar to what currently is offered at BWMS. Thomas said once the students have selected their classes this spring, she will look at their choices and plan a curriculum and schedule.

“Everything you’re getting now will transfer,” Jackson said.

Thomas said she hopes to see a great deal of involvement from the parents and the community.

“I want our parents to know that community engagement, and family involvement, are vital factors to the success of the new school,” she said. “With the support from our current Bridgewater PTO and other current community

members, we are working through the fundamental processes such as naming the school, selecting a mascot and colors. This is a joint effort, and I want us to continue collaborating as we move into our new building and establish new traditions.”

Thomas said she expects a smooth transition from Bridgewater to the new school.

“I have been fortunate to have known (Principal Andrew) Jackson … for several years, and we have similar educational philosophies and high expectations for all students’ success,” she said. “I want to assure our parents that their students will continue to have a principal that is invested in their overall success.”

To allow the parents and students time to become familiar with her, Thomas said she will be present regularly at the Bridgewater campus until her school is built.

“I want the transition for the students to be seamless,” she said.

“I am also working closely with the feeder elementary schools and will be offering events for rising sixthgraders to help them prepare for the transition into middle school.”

She encourages families to like the school’s Facebook page, currently named “Site 37 M SW 4 OCPS,” for weekly updates and information.

Substantial completion is on track for the beginning of June, Thomas said. She expects to move into her new office by June 26 and then can start scheduling walkthroughs.

The construction budget is $38.6 million.

The hiring process for teachers begins this week.

Or the business cards she had printed and is putting on vehicle windows in local shopping areas. Or the newspaper ads or the “FIND Abbott” Facebook page.

She even planned a 24-hour prayer vigil starting Wednesday evening.

Abbott is a chihuahua mix, between 12 and 15 years old, and his owner is heartbroken wondering what might have happened to him, hoping he isn’t cold and wet, praying he’s getting food and water.

He has been missing for nearly six weeks. She suspects he ran off from their Winter Garden home after he briefly was let outside Dec. 30 and became frightened by fireworks.

She refuses to give up on the toothless little rescue dog that won her heart about four years ago.

“The first day I met with him, I knew immediately I would adopt him,” she said. “I met him at Polka Dogz (Pet Rescue). … He looked at me with those eyes and with that tongue hanging out, and I said, ‘I’m fostering that dog and adopting him.’”

Rock thinks someone might have seen Abbott wandering the street and thought he was neglected based on his appearance. But Rock said he came to her with his teeth missing and his lower jaw receding so much that his tongue constantly hangs out the side of his mouth.

“I picture him just walking up to them on the street, and they scooped him up,” Rock said. “And we just have to find that person.”

Abbott is not afraid of people and most likely befriended someone in search of food.

“That’s why I think he’s in someone’s home,” she said. “He’s cute and funny looking, and it doesn’t take a lot to take care of him.”

Rock is turning to the community for help in bringing her beloved Abbott home.

you could see the lake’s sandy bottom,” said Ann Whittle, a 30-year resident of Sleepy Harbor, the community on the northeast side of the lake. “It was clear, and you could see your feet. But over the years, it’s just become this yucky muck. It’s just in a bad shape, and it’s gotten worse since about 2010 and 2011. That’s when we started to notice a lot more algae, and the water was becoming greener.”

Steve Krug, director of Ocoee’s Public Works department, said the city has been monitoring the lake and also noticed something was wrong.

“When you can’t see very far into the water, it’s a good indication that something is going wrong — that something’s off balance,” Krug said. “And what we’re finding is, there may not be an algal bloom, but there’s a lot of plant life that might not have been there before.

And some of our tests have shown that there are a lot of nutrients coming into the lake. And everything has to be in balance. It’s like a swimming pool — if you don’t put enough of certain chemicals in a pool, it turns green, and if you have too many chemicals, it will affect your skin. So it’s pretty similar to a lake — the chemical makeup needs to allow healthy plant life but also support the fish.”

Test results have confirmed there’s a lot of nutrients that support plant life coming into the lake, which tends to adversely impact the water quality, Krug said.

Tom West Blueberries, a 10-acre farm located nearby on East Orlando Avenue, is suspected to be a contributing source of the lake’s increased nutrient intake, he said.

“It just seems that, now, there’s a bit more coming in from an agricultural source — the blueberry farm,” he said. “However, they’re doing everything they need to.

We met with them, and they’re using organic fertilizer. They’re not doing anything that would harm the lake intentionally.”

The family-owned blueberry farm, which opened in 2010, is not an organic farm, said Scott West, who co-owns the farm with his father, Milton West. And Scott said he has trouble believing the farm’s activities or proximity to the lake are contributing to the degradation of the lake’s water quality.

“I don’t know why it would,” Scott said. “I can’t think of why it would. We don’t spray anything that you can’t eat. We don’t spray anything that would hurt humans or wildlife. … We’re not an organic farm, but if something was going into the lake, it wouldn’t matter whether it was organic or not — it would still have the same NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium) as anything else.”

The city is working with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to devise a longterm plan to help the lake and see if there are any state grants to help fund the initiative, Krug shared.

“We can’t just go to the blueberry farm, and say, ‘Hey, you’re doing everything right, but we need you to spend all this money to fix this or put something in’ — especially when it would only benefit the city for them to do this,” Krug said.

Krug estimates it could take up to a year to finalize a treatment plan and procure funding. He added the treatment plan may take up to five years, because there is no quick fix.

A classic cartoon and comic character will come to life at the West Orange High School theater.

Theater students will be performing “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” from Feb. 14 to 17. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Feb. 14 to 16, with a 2 p.m. matinee Feb. 17. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased online or at the box office. Tickets also can be purchased from any of the school’s theater students.

Theater Department Director Tara Whitman said the production is a musical rendition of some of the adventures of Charlie Brown and his iconic friends, the Peanuts Gang. Audiences can expect to see these iconic characters brought to life onstage.

“It’s a great, upbeat, familyfriendly number,” Whitman said.

“It kind of follows the same structure of a Charlie Brown movie or the comic strips. There’s different plots of different random days of their life. … It’s the same

basic characters and situations that we’ve seen since Charles Schultz started the whole thing.”

Whitman said she is going about this musical a little differently compared to past productions. Rather than taking on all of the responsibilities with putting on a show herself, she has given two students the opportunity to direct “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” — but with her supervision and occasional guidance. She’s also getting some help from a student choreographer.

“I’ve taken on two student directors and a student choreographer (for the show),” Whitman said. “As their teacher, and their director and their club sponsor, usually everything is me. … Having the student directors — and I also have a student technical director — has given the (other) students a new person to communicate with.”

Seniors Isabel Sugrue, 18, and Alex Mohr, 17, are the two student directors of the show and excited for the new opportunity.

“We’ve either been behind the scenes or on stage performing, so it’s really kind of cool to use the experience that we’ve gotten performing here and using it in a different way,” Mohr said.

“For me, (Ms. Whitman) has let me do directorial duties before, but I never officially have received the director’s status,”

Sugrue said. “It’s really interesting seeing the difference between getting those bits and pieces of doing (director’s) stuff and then completely taking on the responsibility.”

Both agree the change in position presents unique challenges.

“It’s harder than I thought it was going to be, but almost in a good way, because it kind of makes us realize how tough of a job (it is),” Mohr said.

“It’s definitely been a challenge, but more of an exciting thing to take on because we’ve got to learn how to problemsolve and how to make schedules and how to do what’s best for an entire company rather than just worrying about two or three scenes that we’re in — instead you have to worry about all of them,” Sugrue said. “I know that the one thing I want to do for the rest of my life is be a part of the theater community — whether that’s on stage or telling the people onstage what to do. I can definitely see myself — hopefully — one day being a director.”

Orange County Case Planner Jennifer DuBois told those in attendance the applicant ultimately seeks to build up to nine singlefamily homes.

Originally, the property had a designation of rural settlement 1/5 (RS 1/5) and the applicant requested the change to RS 1/1 nearly three years ago, DuBois said. However, at the Local Planning Agency adoption hearing in May 2017, the applicant changed that request to R 1/2, which was adopted by the Orange County Board of County Commissioners the next month.

Currently, the land is designated RS 1/2 and zoned as A-1 citrus rural district, but VP Real Estate is seeking the originally requested RS 1/1 designation again.

Rebecca Wilson, the land-use attorney representing the applicant, told attendees the cur-

rent designation allows for four homes, but the RS 1/1 designation would allow up to nine.

However, the property neighbors the Lake Avalon Planned Development, which is approved for 46 single-family homes and has a 50% open-space agreement in place because of its location in the Wekiva Study Area. VP Real Estate’s adjacent, 9.08-acre property also would comply.

Wilson said if the property only could be developed with four homes, it would result in four different curb cuts onto Avalon Road. Should the future land-use amendment be approved, Wilson said the developer would propose one entrance.

Residents said they already compromised with the original request two years ago and were not willing to do so again. Their primary concerns were regarding lot sizes and infrastructure.

Other concerns included whether the new homes would have access to water and sewage or would

have wells; contribution to local schools overcrowding; adding more traffic onto Avalon Road; destruction of the rural settlement; and residual home values.

However, those questions remain unanswered.

“How large the lots would figure out and what infrastructure would look like — we don’t ask them to do that right now, because they don’t have the rights to do them yet,” Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey said.

Most in attendance remained against a change in designation, because they are worried about the precedent it would set.

As part of the neighboring Lake Avalon Planned Development’s agreement, it is required to seek Orange County utilities and bring them to the site at the developer’s expense, and the property also would have to seek county utilities, VanderLey said.

The Local Planning Agency will consider the project April 18.

cook, and my aunts were excellent (cooks),” Vernon Reid said. “When I was young — I grew up in Barbados — I would help my aunt scale fish and clean the fish before we (cooked) it. My mother taught me to make lasagna and chicken and all that sort of stuff.”

“As long as I’ve known Vernon, he’s had a desire to open up an eatery of sorts,” Veneatra Reid said.

In addition to traditional homemade ice cream made with milk, Cocolando offers a unique twist to the frozen treat. For those with dietary restrictions when it comes to dairy products, Cocolando offers a selection of ice creams made with coconut milk. The idea of serving ice cream made with coconut milk came from some of the Reids’ personal experiences.

Their son has a dairy allergy.

“When our son was born, he

couldn’t take milk,” Vernon Reid said. “We wanted to be able to cater to those who may not be able to consume dairy.”

“We had kids who came in recently for the first time who had never had an ice-cream cone before, because they couldn’t

have it,” Veneatra Reid said. “To see how excited the kids were and the parents were to see their kids have that ice-cream cone for the first time — those kinds of moments are special for us.

They’re moments that make it all worthwhile.”

BRILEY AVENUE, previously Third Avenue. Samuel J. and Fannie Edna Rich Briley and their children lived in several houses in Tildenville and Oakland before settling in 1900 in a home near Lake Apopka now occupied by great-grandson Jefferson “Jeff” Voss. The Brileys cleared acreage and planted cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers, and in later years, Briley purchased additional land for orange groves and, later, family homesteads. Voss’ mother, Jane Briley Voss, lives still today on the street named after her parents. Besides farming, the family has been active in education and public service. Jane’s husband and Jeff’s father, the late Jefferson P. “Jake” Voss, was a school principal and Oakland mayor.

SPEER AVENUE, previously First Avenue. James Gamble Speer, a Scotch-Irishman from South Carolina, came to Florida as an appointed member of the Indian Removal Commission in 1854.

At that time, Orange County was unbroken forest and the highways were little more than cow paths.

Speer qualified for judge in 1857, moved to Oakland in 1858 to begin a farm and established a post office in Oakland in 1860. He negotiated the arrival of the Orange Belt Railway in 1886. He died in 1893 at age 73. Speer Park also is named for Oakland’s original settler.

PETRIS AVENUE, previously Depot Avenue. Joseph Petris, known as Uncle Joe, was one of Oakland’s most popular citizens and famous for his fish fries. He worked for the Plant System and Atlantic Coast Line Railroad as Oakland’s station agent and served as mayor of Oakland in 1916-20 and 1926-28. His parents, Edmund and Louise Petris, came to Florida in 1874 and then moved to Oakland with the Orange Belt Railway Company. He was an upholsterer and made Pullman railcar seats for the railway. The family lived in a spacious house at 121 E. Oakland Ave., built by the Orange Belt Investment Company. Marcia Geraci and her husband, Tony, are the family’s fifth generation to live in the house.

VICK AVENUE, previously Second Avenue. Helen “Dewey” Vick (1898-1993), one of six children born to Ezekiel Cummings Vick and Sarah Katherine Rutland Vick, grew up in Oakland when her parents moved there in 1903. They bought the dwelling at 4 Tubb St., which was built in 1860 and is one of the oldest homes in West Orange County and the oldest in Oakland.

Dewey Vick, who married Edward Lee Mathews, was a registered nurse and owned Colonial Corners Florist Shop, which operated out of the family garage starting in 1939. She was the first female mayor of Oakland and served three terms in the 1940s.

GULLEY AVENUE, previously Fourth Avenue. Richard Lindsay “R.L.” Gulley was 18 when he came to Florida in 1895 with his older brothers, who were here with the railroad boom. He chose not to follow his brother to Tampa, instead farming the land and serving as treasurer at the Presbyterian church for many years. He married Nona Dunnaway, a descendant of one of the earliest West Orange County families.

Richard’s son, Norman, owned the B.N. Gulley Hardware store in Oakland until his death in 1968.

HULL AVENUE, previously Seventh Avenue. Horace S. “Buck” Hull served Oakland for more than 10 years as a town commissioner. His father was Simeon Benjamin Hull, the son of early Orlando pioneers William Benjamin and Emily Hull, and his mother was Marguerite Matilda Winkelman, the daughter of Oakland pioneer John Winkelman. Buck Hull’s parents built a home on purchased grove land on the west end of Oakland that is now called Hull Island.

he town of Oakland was platted — upside down — in a uniform grid fashion in 1886. The east-west roads were named First through Eighth avenues, and the north-south connections were dubbed First through 10th streets.

In 1972, after 86 years, town leaders found a way to honor Oakland’s pioneers, first families and early elected officials — by renaming the original streets after the very people who helped put the town on the Orange County map.

First Avenue became Speer Avenue; Second became Vick; Third, Briley; Fourth, Gulley; Fifth, Henschen; Seventh, Hull; Eighth, Sadler; 10th, Herriott; and 13th, Postell.

Sixth Avenue, the main thoroughfare through the town, which in 1886 ended at Eighth/Nixon Street to the west, was later renamed Oakland Avenue and absorbed 12th Street to continue to the west.

Hull Avenue merged with 11th Street. There was no east-west Ninth Street.

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation has in its collection files of West Orange County’s families past and present, including many from Oakland.

Who are the people behind the names?

HENSCHEN AVENUE, previously Fifth Avenue. Swedish immigrant Josef Henschen arrived in America in 1871 as the guide of 100 Swedish tradesmen, carpenters and masons guaranteed employment in citrus groves.

He invested $40,000 plus 1,000 acres to Peter Demens’ railroading enterprise, the Orange Belt Railway Company. He was the only investor to remain in Oakland after the company folded. His family, which included wife Carolina, lived at the northwest corner of Tubb Street and Oakland Avenue. He planted an extensive citrus grove, which he divided and sold for a profit, and served as Oakland postmaster from 1889-93. Josef (1843-1930) is buried in the Oakland Cemetery.

SADLER AVENUE, previously Eighth Avenue. James Hardy Sadler came to Oakland to live with his grandfather, James Gamble Speer, after his father was killed during the Civil War. He is credited with planting the magnificent oaks that divide Oakland Avenue. According to documents, when State Road 438 (West Plant Street and East Oakland Avenue) was being widened, James Sadler stopped the “road improvement” with his shotgun as the road department approached his house. Thus, the road split, resulting in the live oaks surviving in the middle of the road. Sadler was a pioneer in raising vegetables in West Orange County and was the first to irrigate his fields. Sadler, who married Myra Minerva “Minnie” Tilden, became one of Oakland’s largest landowners and was instrumental in opening the Bank of Oakland. He is buried in the Oakland Cemetery.

POSTELL AVENUE, previously 13th Street. Will Postell and his new bride, Lugenia, moved to Killarney from Valdosta, Georgia in the early 1900s. Will did farm work for Julian Sadler in Oakland and was a deacon at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church; self-employed Lugenia did laundry for a number of families in the area and excelled at catching fish. The couple purchased parcels of land in Oakland and built houses on the property for several of their 10 children.

Francine Postell, their daughter, was an educator, served as the Oakland mayor from 1987-89 and later was a town commissioner. Five generations of Postells have lived in Oakland.

A splash of color here, a splash of carnival fun there and a whole lot of community support sprinkled into the mix have helped shape the Winter Garden Art Association’s annual Splash Gala fundraiser into a growing success the last four years.

Next week, gala attendees will dive into the world of masks and mysteries with WGAA’s fifth annual gala, which follows a Venetian masquerade theme this year.

“A Splash of Masquerade” is encouraging guests to break out their best dresses, fanciest suits and most creative costumes for the evening.

Masks are optional but encouraged.

“We think that a masquerade sounds so much fun and have wanted to do it for several years, but we wanted to wait until we were big and experienced enough to pull it off,” said WGAA board member Elizabeth McKinney.

“We thought our five-year anniversary mark was the perfect time.”

The Winter Garden Art Association is a nonprofit that aims to expand public access to art and provide support to local artists, as well as to educate the community and celebrate the importance of visual arts and culture within it. WGAA is housed in what was once an old fire station — now the SoBo Art Gallery — on South Boyd Street in Winter Garden.

It gives the whole community a chance to come and express themselves. It’s extremely important to do that. We have children’s programs, programs for those suffering with Alzheimers, and with the help of some sponsors, we have a program at Edgewood Children’s Ranch.”

On a special night, West Orange alums and professional baseball players Nolan Fontana and Austin Gomber had their jerseys retired.

Sitting in front of them on a table draped with a blue table cloth are two, round cutouts featuring the No. 4 and No. 23 in an orange block font with a blue outline. It’s their old numbers — the numbers they wore during their baseball-playing days at West Orange.

This night was a special one for the two baseball standouts. Just before the War-

riors’ basketball game against Apopka, Fontana and Gomber received one of the greatest honors an athlete can receive — they had their numbers retired.

Now, no one who steps out onto the diamond for the Warriors can claim Fontana’s No. 4 or Gomber’s No. 23.

“It’s a very humbling experience with this, because sure, we have had great careers and we are still playing — we plan on staying healthy and continuing our baseball careers, our livelihoods — but it all started here at West Orange,” said Fontana, who graduated in 2009.

Change seems to be a constant as it relates to football and the Florida High School Athletic Association.

The most recent of these changes came Monday, Jan. 28, when the FHSAA Board of Directors endorsed the recommendation set in place by the Football Advisory Committee relating to the use of a Ratings Percentage Index to rank football teams for the state playoffs.

Unlike the old system — which took into account a team’s winning percentage and their opponent’s winning percentage — the new RPI will include those two metrics, as well as the winning percentage of the opponents of opponents. The first two metrics count for 35% of a team’s ranking, while the newest addition will count for 30%.

For many coaches it’s a positive change from the playoff point system that was used last year.

“It’s better than it was over the last two years,” said Foundation Academy head coach Brad Lord.

“There have been teams that got into the playoffs that my middleschool team could have beaten.”

One of the biggest issues is that not all team’s schedules are what they may appear, and it has led to many blowouts in the first round.

A team could finish with eight or nine wins throughout the regular season, but if its schedule is padded with sub-.500 opponents, then its success could be misleading. It’s a topic that has been a thorn in the side of coaches who want to see playoff-worthy teams in the tournament.

“My first year at Fort Pierce Westwood, we were 3-8 and had a playoff game,” Ocoee head coach Aaron Sheppard said. “Honestly, I didn’t deserve to be in the playSEE FHSAA PAGE 10

Ocoee sweeps Lakeview

A senior co-captain on the Legacy Charter girls basketball team, Tya Freeman has made quite the name for herself. The talented guard leads the team in scoring (23.2 ppg), assists (2.1 apg) and steals (3.3 spg). With her high-school career winding down, Freeman hopes to play ball at the next level before eventually going into a career in psychiatry.

What got you started playing basketball?

I don’t really remember the age I started playing, because I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember. My parents both loved the sport, so that’s what got me into it, and both of my older siblings played.

Through your four years, what would you say has been the biggest highlight of your high-school career?

One would be Coach B (Blessing Freeman) — she’s the best.

And also when I scored 1,000 points in my junior year. That was special.

What is the hardest part of playing basketball?

The hardest part would be to just stay focused, because when you’re in the game there’s a lot of things going on, so you need to make sure you’re doing what you need to do so your team is successful.

You just have to stay focused and play hard.

What is the best advice that Coach Freeman has given you?

Her whole thing is to go hard in everything you do, whether that’s on the basketball court or in the classroom. Everything you want to do, and everything you choose to do, you just need to go hard and 100%.

actually want to play basketball — you want to take basketball to the next level — so everyone there is just at a higher level.

Do you have any plans after you graduate?

I want to play college basketball and also get my degree.

Education is very important to me, because I do want to go into the psychology field, but I also want to play basketball too because it’s a big part of my life.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I want to say Jamaica. I’ve never been, but it feels like a fun environment and could also be relaxing.

When you grow up, what do you want to be?

I want to be a psychiatrist. I feel like psychiatry is a great choice, because it has the therapist aspect and also to just help people get better.

What is your favorite meal after a game?

A lot of my teammates would laugh at me, but Popeyes. The biscuit, the mashed potatoes, beans and rice, and, of course, fried chicken.

What’s the difference between playing club ball and high school?

I would say the competitive level. I feel a lot of times in high school, people just come and play because they can get on the team.

t was a big night for the Ocoee Middle boys and girls basketball teams, as the Cardinals picked up wins Wednesday, Jan. 30, in front of a packed house at Ocoee High School.

The boys team (2-0) kicked things off with a dominating 56-41 win over Lakeview, before the girls (1-1) capped off the evening with an impressive 34-11 win of their own.

Ocoee Middle offered an incentive for students who completed all their assignments and displayed good behavior through the first nine weeks with a free ticket to attend Wednesday night’s games.

Although a team’s region can have an impact on its schedule — for better or for worse — the new change will force teams to schedule better opponents.

It’s a change that will help benefit schools such as Lord’s Foundation team. Its strength at the smaller-school level makes it difficult to schedule in-region teams.

“The problem is with the new 1A to 4A you can play anyone, but there are no rivalries — I think I have two teams in the region that will play me,” Lord said. “With us being a pretty good 2A program, not a lot of 2A teams will play us, so we always

have to play up.”

By making the field more competitive and by renewing old rivalries, there’s a hope by the FHSAA and teams to make the whole experience more fan friendly.

Having more excitement on the field by avoiding a barrage of blowouts also could help with another key issue — dwindling fan attendance, especially in the playoffs.

No one wants to sit through a 60-0 drubbing, whether they be in the stands or on the field.

However this season’s schedules already are set, much to the dismay of many coaches.

“That’s not even fun to coach,” said Lord with a laugh.

“It will make it better. I wish they made a quicker decision (though), because even my schedule, which is a pretty tough 2A schedule, I might have scheduled a little differently. I don’t really have a bad team on

my schedule now, but I might have taken a chance and played a 6A team.”

Although most coaches say the new RPI is an improved metric compared to the point system used last year, there is always progress that can be made in the future.

Sheppard said he is pleased with the new requirement change but would have preferred going back to an older system.

“The best means, in my opinion, would be the two teams from each district and then the wildcard — like they use to do,” Sheppard said. “When I was in high school, a long time ago, they use to have a wild card, if there was a third team in the district that deserved to go, then they would go. You’re very rarely going to have more than three teams that deserve to go.

That would be the easiest way to do it.”

The feelings of gratitude toward the honor by Fontana was shared with his former teammate, who also recalled his time at West Orange with fondness.

“It’s awesome to ever be honored at any level — whether it be high school or whatnot,” said Gomber, a 2011 graduate. “This means a lot to me. Playing here meant a lot to me when I was here. To know that the rest of my life I can come back and see my number on the wall — that’s pretty cool.”

Just as anyone would guess, Fontana and Gomber weren’t just handed this honor — they absolutely deserved it.

FONTANA FINDS HIS SWING

Although Fontana started play-

ing baseball long before he arrived at West Orange, it was during his years on the Warriors’ baseball team when he really found his groove and became a force at the plate and on the field at shortstop.

During his high-school career, Fontana became “the guy” — thanks in part to his proficient batting and defense.

In fact, by the time Fontana graduated, he had become one of the best hitters in program history with season records for batting average, runs, walks and on-base percentage. Despite being an infield player, he also managed to tie the record for most saves at West Orange.

“There’s so many things I’ve learned,” Fontana said of his time playing baseball. “But if there’s one thing that I know that is the most controllable thing, it’s when you put the spikes on and you go to take the field, you know you’re doing one thing, and that’s competing.”

That competitive spirit — along with his impressive stat-line — led Fontana to the University of Florida. There, Fontana flourished as an All-SEC caliber player and was named to the All-Defensive Team all three years of his career.

He took his next biggest step in 2012 when the Houston Astros drafted him in the second round (61st overall). Years bouncing around in the minors finally paid off May 22, 2017, when Fontana — after being picked up by the Los Angeles Angels off waivers — made his MLB debut.

“I remember it vividly, but the one thing I take away from it is the people who came there to support you and the people who have always been there for you,” Fontana said. “In fact, Jesse Marlo (former West Orange head coach) was there for that game, and being that it was in Tampa was unique. It’s surreal — it’s something you never forget.”

Since that whirlwind of a day, Fontana picked up his first hit (a home run) before going on to sign a deal 18 months later with the Texas Rangers in 2018.

THROWBACK THURSDAY FEB. 5, 1969 In the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, residents looking for a perfect greeting card for their friend or sweetheart knew they could pop into Modern Stationery, located in downtown Winter Garden.

The shop, which once took up several storefronts in the middle of the block, was the place to go for holiday cards and special gifts.

Today, this location is occupied by Driftwood Market, Kaebisch Chocolate, Harry & Larry’s Bar-B-Que and Vintage Sky Salon.
