t all started with a stack of blank cards, blank tokens and a whole lot of creativity at a prototype gaming convention.

But what Summerport Village resident Kelly North Adams didn’t know at the time was that when she sat down at the convention and let her imagination and love for tabletop board games run free, she would inadvertently launch her career as a board-game designer. Her first board game, a card game called Veggie Garden, was drawn out and designed in less than two hours.

“I’ve played games all my life … but I’ve gotten really back into it in the past 10 years, where I grew my collection and it’s become a big part of my life,” Adams said. “Over the past 10 years, I’ve seen an influx of females starting to play games.

It’s been sort of a male-dominated industry, especially in the way of

when it comes to designing, playing and publishing games.”

Now, just more than a year later, she has created a total of five games, two of which are either under contract or published.

But her most recent game, Chibi Quest!, is quickly gaining momentum — multinational game- and toy-making company Hasbro has chosen it as one of the five finalists in its recent contest for the next great family game.

Chibi Quest! is a light, fun, family-friendly game that takes less than an hour to play. Players take on the role of a Chibi and start out dressed in their pajamas. The Chibis are the protectors of their land, Shortshire, and must keep it from being invaded by monsters. Players do this in three phases: equipping the Chibi, fighting the monsters and defeating the “boss.”

The inspiration came from Adams’ 12-year-old nephew, who loves video games and roleplaying games. Adams wanted to create a game where players could take on different roles but play with friends and family and interact

socially rather than on a computer.

“It’s bringing the world of fantasy to the table,” she said. “I’m a big fan of any way you can bring your family together and have fun.

It’s interactive, it’s silly, and there’s a little bit of strategy in it, too. It’s popular with kids and families and gamers. It kind of fits a lot of different groups.”

Each of the five finalists is required to reach at least 100 backers on his or her Indiegogo campaign page and to reach his or her fundraising tier. At the end of the campaign, games will then be evaluated by a panel of judges.

Hasbro’s celebrity guest judge is Daymond John, the founder of FUBU and a “shark” on ABC’s show “Shark Tank.” The winner of the contest will be flown to Hasbro headquarters to meet the team, have his or her game published and receive $25,000.

“I’ve told Hasbro it hasn’t quite set in that I’m actually a finalist yet; I’m still in awe,” Adams said.

“For them to pick the game (as the winner) it would be really big as a board-game designer because it’s one of the biggest companies you could work with.”

2. Battling monsters is next. Collect all the dice shown on your armor cards. Some monsters are stronger than others, and you must meet the sword requirements to beat the monster.

3. Fight until you faint. The first Chibi to cover up all his or her hit points faints. Then, everyone finishes out the round so everyone has an equal number of turns.

After monsters are defeated, everyone has another minute to equip with fresh, undamaged armor to defeat the “boss.”

4. If you defeat the boss you are all winners, but there is only one Champion Chibi! Count up all your points and whoever has the most is known throughout the lands as the Champion Chibi.

OCPS unveils new Maxey plans GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER

During a community meeting held Jan. 23, Orange County Public Schools unveiled 60% of the design plans for the new Maxey Elementary School.

The site for the new two-story school — located at 602 E. Story Road, at the intersection of Story Road and Ninth Street — will replace the 50-year-old, 38,000-square-foot Maxey Elementary School at 1100 E. Maple St. The new 78,000-square-foot building will be able to house 650 students, but OCPS also has added an area for classroom trailers to accommodate potential future growth.

The new Maxey campus will include a canopied entryway that leads directly into the administrative center — a deliberate design to ensure there will be only one secure access point into the building.

grounds. On the first floor, there will be a media center, two computer labs, classrooms for students in the lower grades and kindergarten, art and music rooms, a kitchen/serving area, restrooms and a multi-purpose cafeteria area. On the second floor, OCPS plans to add classrooms for students in intermediate grades, two restroom areas, three stairwells and additional administrative space.

A parking lot with 131 spaces, which will be situated on the southern edge of the school, will double as the queue line for parent drop-off and pick-up. It’s estimated the queue line will be able to hold 116 cars, and OCPS expects it will prevent traffic from backing up onto Ninth Street.

OCPS also will be adding a 45,000-square-foot open athletic field, with basketball courts, a common-use area and a covered playground. A bus loop will be included on the northern edge that enters and exits from Story Road.

After a short video presentation, members of the school project’s construction management and architectural team fielded questions from attendees.

The main concerns parents and school volunteers were related to kids’ safety and comfort.

A specific concern brought up by current Maxey Elementary School Principal Jeraldine Sims regarded the computer lab’s proximity to the kindergarten area and primary-school classrooms. Because many students in the higher grades often use computers for tests, Sims asked whether the noise would be an issue for students trying to concentrate. She proposed placing a skills/computer lab upstairs as well.

However, OCPS said it had considered the option but decided against it because certain school building codes require that areas the younger students use be kept on the first floor.

Charlotte Donaldson, a school volunteer from the St. Luke’s Methodist Church, asked about fencing, while a second church volunteer, Susan Norris Carter, inquired about a possible pedestrian bridge on Story Road or Ninth Street for students who walk to school.

OCPS representatives informed the entire school property would be enclosed by a fence — except

for the front, to keep it visually appealing. However, it will not be by adding a pedestrian bridge.

Instead, OCPS plans to coordinate with the Winter Garden Police Department to find a safe walking path with cross guards to maintain safety. OCPS said it also considering a 45- to 60-second all-red light signal where all the traffic light signals turn red to allow pedestrians to pass.

Out of the two playgrounds on the school campus, only one will have a sun shade. This concerned many parents, because they would prefer covered playgrounds that protect kids from sun exposure.

School Board member Christine Moore interjected in the ensuing conversation, informing attendees that the cost of a second sun shade, which is typically $20,000 to $25,000, had not been included in the budget. She suggested fundraising or applying for a community grant to purchase shade structures for the tot lots.

The new Maxey Elementary School is on track to open by August 2018.

go above and beyond for their community.

Rinehart will receive the Sam Hovsepian Award, given in memory of one of West Orange County’s outstanding citizens to an individual who “stands heads and shoulders above the crowd.”

He said he was surprised and honored to be recognized by the chamber.

“I’ve tried to be involved in the community and do things I thought were helpful and beneficial to the community in West Orange County,” Rinehart said.

As a community developer for Glatting Jackson Kercher Anglin Lopez Rinehart and, later, Castle & Cooke, Rinehart has helped create master-planned neighborhoods such as Keene’s Pointe and Oakland Park.

“To me, Oakland Park is a great example of a traditional neighborhood and a lot of what we tried to incorporate in it related to a healthy environment and a great place to build community,” he said. “I think there’s a great opportunity to build great environments.”

He likened Oakland Park to the city of Winter Garden, with its history, connections, West Orange Trail and hometown feel.

“In a large-scale project, you have to make it walkable and have parks close to the homes,” he said. “The West Orange Trail is a great amenity that we focused on instead of turning our back on.”

Oakland Park is a certified green neighborhood, as well.

His current project is a threestory mixed-use building on South Boyd Street north of Winter Garden’s SoBo art gallery. The bottom floor will be retail space, and the second and third floors will have 22 apartments. This is the first downtown residential project in decades.

had mutual friends and were both chamber members.

Of his contributions to West Orange County, Rinehart said the most impactful are the student gardens that were established at Winter Garden’s five elementary schools. Health Central Hospital and the West Orange Healthcare District provided funding.

“It aligns with the hospital’s focus on health, but it’s an important opportunity for the children of the school to learn where some of their food comes from and learn its dynamics and encouraged them to take some of that home,” he said.

Throughout his career, Rinehart has served on numerous boards, including the Metro YMCA and the National Town Builders Association, and he performed regular volunteer work, mostly in downtown Orlando, where he had an office. “(John Rinehart) bettered the community by serving on various boards, including Orlando Health/Health Central Board, Central Florida YMCA,” the chamber said. “He continues to improve the community even

Kimberly Hardy, assistant vice provost of UCF’s central region campuses and current chamber board member, said partnering with organizations such as WOCC helps to promote economic progress in the region and establishes a mutual understanding between them.

“The chamber has (more than) 1,100 members, and so the ability for us to partner with them and reach out to those employees helps us to find out what their needs are, what they’re looking for and how we can help meet those needs,”

Rinehart grew up in Gotha, having moved there from Orlando when he was 8. He and his wife, Sally, moved to South Carolina in 2014.

He will be in Central Florida this week to check on the status of his latest project and to accept his award at the chamber event at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

They’re (WOCC) very welcoming, they keep us informed of economic, political, social and educational happenings in West Orange, and (that) provides us opportunities to get to know and meet the leaders of West Orange and establish those relationships.”

UCF is one of the trustees of the chamber. Hardy sits on the education committee and determines how UCF can reach out to the West Orange County community. Other UCF representatives work with the WOCC on events such as the Hob Nob and Straw Poll and on keeping them up to date with the university’s projects.

“It’s a huge honor (to receive this award), and a testament to the productive partnership we have between the university and the chamber,” Hardy said. “They’ve really provided us the opportunity (to build relationships) and ultimately those partnerships benefit the surrounding community. It’s a great honor to work with them.”

East Newell and North Woodland streets. Officers responded to reports of a vehicle that was turned over on the driver’s side with a female moving inside.

When officers arrived, the female driver was found standing next to the overturned vehicle and was questioned. The female driver stated she was not on the phone when the incident happened. She did not know how the incident occurred but added she is unfamiliar with Winter Garden’s streets. Based on the responding officer’s investigation of the surrounding property, the officer deduced the driver had driven over the curb and collided with the tree, causing her car to turn over. It was later discovered the driver had a suspended license. When the officer issued a citation, the female driver grew upset and raised her voice at the officer, alerting the officer to the smell of alcohol on her breath. The driver was then charged with a DUI. OCOEE JAN. 11

10500 block of West Colonial Drive. A woman shopping at Walmart was observed stealing $78.64 worth of merchandise via security camera footage. The woman was seen selecting a pair of earrings and placing them on her ears, leaving the tag behind.

She also was witnessed removing price tags from additional jewelry, cosmetic and clothing items. All items were then concealed in her purse, and she attempted to pass all points of sale without purchasing the items. She was stopped by a

security officer and was told to return all the stolen items before being arrested for petit theft.

10500 block of West Colonial Drive. A male Walmart shopper was caught on camera attempting to steal a Google Chromecast device worth $35. The would-be thief was seen placing the device inside a rolled up comforter set.

He then proceeded to pay for the comforter alone. When exiting the store, he was approached by a Walmart Loss Prevention officer and told to return the items.

The man, when confronted, said he had simply forgotten to pay for the item. He was subsequently arrested for petit theft.

West Colonial Drive. A patrol officer was notified of a reckless motorcyclist driving over the speed limit heading toward his direction. Once the motorcycle driver arrived at his location, the officer activated his vehicle’s lights and siren to perform a traffic stop. However, the motorcyclist accelerated to a speed of more than 100 mph. Because there was a lot of traffic and the motorcycle started fleeing toward Florida’s Turnpike, the officer stopped pursuit, and the motorcyclist got away. However, using the motorcycle tag number and surveillance video at a Kangaroo Express that police knew the man had visited minutes before, Oakland police obtained his name, address and photo.

Law enforcement has filed charges against the driver.

Just two days after he won the Winter Garden District 3 City Commission seat, Mark Maciel was representing his constituents at his first meeting Jan. 26.

“My first commission meeting was inspiring and overwhelming at the same time,” he said of the experience. “However, I have some impressive role models on the city staff and on the commission providing guidance and training.”

Looking ahead, Maciel said he was optimistic about his new role.

“I believe Winter Garden will continue to be pleased with the efforts of city staff,” he said.

Maciel won the seat — vacated by former City Commissioner Bobby Olszewski, during a special election Jan. 24. The other candidates included Harold Bouler and Patricia Angry. By the time the polls closed, 429 ballots had been cast. Maciel won 64% of the vote, Bouler received 24%, and Angry received 11%.

Maciel moved to Florida nearly 20 years ago and has lived in District 3 since then with his wife, Justine, and three children. He served in the National Guard for 32 years and has been involved in real estate as a planner and landacquisition coordinator since moving to Florida.

“Normally being a behind-the-

scenes person, I decided it was time to take the next step having seen some of the goals and objectives that needed to get done,” Maciel said about his decision to run for the post.

After serving with several organizations, including Winter Garden’s Planning and Zoning Board, Maciel said he’s looking forward to putting his campaign promises into action.

“I’m looking forward to identifying the issues, creating a plan to correct the issues and then implementing the plan,” he said.

“East Winter Garden is going to be a focus — the redevelopment of east Winter Garden — and, as I promised in the campaign, the traffic and crime issues in the entire district.”

His main priority is to work with the community to learn about its most-pressing needs.

“I’m tracking some vital traffic problems in District 3 south of (State Road) 50,” Maciel said.

“And I’m continuing to work with the city and community leaders in east Winter Garden to revitalize this critical area.”

IN OTHER NEWS n During the Jan. 26 Winter Garden Commission meeting, city leaders were originally scheduled to discuss the first reading of a proposed ordinance that will modify the pension and benefits plan for the city’s general employees to align with IRS requirements.

However, this reading was postponed until Feb. 9, because of new information city staff received. If fully approved for both readings, changes to the benefit plan include a reduction in the eligibility requirements for normal retirement from age 65 with five years of service to age 62 with five years of service. n Commissioners gave their unanimous approval of the site plan and developer’s agreement for a commercial outparcel on vacant property located on the northeast corner of Avalon Road and Tilden Road: the Belle Meade Planned Commercial Development. The applicant, Bramley Overstreet Trust, seeks to develop the 3.5 acres with three commercial buildings.

Two will be single-story structures that house multiple retail suites, while the third will be a two-story structure with 15,647 square feet of retail space available on the first floor and 8,830 square feet of office space on the second floor. n Four residents qualified as candidates for the seat of District 1 Commissioner in the upcoming general election on March 14. These residents are Lisa Bennett, Lillie V. Brandon, Wendy Byrd Jung and Kent Wesley Makin. John Rees, in his position as the Winter Garden mayor and District 5 commissioner, is unopposed.

“All the characters are so relatable, because everyone has gone through adolescence,” said actor Ricky Cona.

All the actors are adults playing tweens, which only adds to the comedy of the show.

“It takes a lot of energy to play such goofy characters,” said Kit Cleto. “But it’s honestly a lot of fun.”

The show, which runs from Feb. 3 to 26 at the Garden Theatre, follows the story of six middleschoolers as they compete in the county spelling bee and all the woes and drama that come with it.

But the actors all have their own memories of middle school — including some very embarrassing moments.

Like many other seventh-graders, Gober had a major crush.

“I was deeply in love with one of the popular, cute, athletic guys in school,” she said.

But her secret didn’t stay secret for very long. On Valentine’s Day, everyone was buzzing with excitement as candy grams were delivered throughout the day.

What Gober didn’t know was that her best friend had ordered a candy gram to be delivered to that secret crush. The label said, “From Paige.” It was delivered to the classroom with everyone watching. Gober was mortified.

“I suffered many years of embarrassment from that,” she said.

SAVANNAH SIMERLY

In middle school, Simerly was a cheerleader. But there’s one incident she will never forget.

It was during a basketball game.

The cheerleaders were performing their routine, and Simerly prepared to do her tumbling pass across the gym floor. It wasn’t until after she finished her flips that she realized her mistake.

“I forgot to put my bloomers on,” she said.

So everyone had seen her underwear.

Alvarez still hasn’t forgotten her middle-school ketchup incident.

She was walking out of the library, head held high because she was rocking a pair of white pants and her crush was nearby.

What she didn’t notice was the small ketchup packet in the middle of the floor.

“I stepped right on the ketchup packet and slipped right on my beautiful white pants with everyone looking at me,” Alvarez said.

She had to endure the rest of the day with a giant, red ketchup stain on her backside.

In eighth grade, Cleto had a girlfriend. They had been going out for almost three months — a lifetime in middle-school years.

They bonded over their love of the TV show “Charmed,” he said.

But it came to a dramatic end during a choir competition. While waiting in a holding room for the competition to start, three of his girlfriend’s friends approached him.

“They told me, ‘She needs to talk to you. You haven’t called her in a week, so you’re not going out anymore,’” Cleto said. “(My girlfriend) just stood there staring lasers at me.”

Everyone in the choir watched the exchange.

“It was like TMZ for a month,” Cleto said.

Cona was the new kid in school and forgot to bring his permission slip for the upcoming sixth-grade field trip to Universal Orlando. “(My teacher) reamed me out in front of the class and refused to let me go,” he said.

As if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, when Cona’s mother, who was also a teacher, heard about the incident, she stormed into the classroom to have words with Cona’s teacher.

“I could hear them arguing about it,” he said.

Even though his teacher changed her stance, Cona’s mother still kept him home on the day of the field trip.

“My mom said that she wasn’t going to let me go with that lady,” he said.

Basso Jr. (Debbie), of Wilmington, Delaware; Christopher Basso (Walter Briski), of San Francisco, California; Carolyn Plyler (Mark), of Lawrenceville, New Jersey; Annmarie Boelter (Karl), of Wilmington, Delaware; Gerald Basso, of Winter Garden, Florida; Elizabeth Cheplick (Dennis), of Clermont, Florida; 11 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was blessed to have the love and support of many dear friends and neighbors.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Roger Patrick and Bertha Dempsey of Suffern, New York; her brother, Jack Dempsey of Mahwah, New Jersey; her son-in-law, Benjamin Moore of Healdsburg, California; and her beloved husband, Alfred J. Basso of Winter Garden, Florida.

DIED FRIDAY, JAN. 27, 2017.

On Jan. 27, 2017, following a short illness, Geraldine Margaret Mary Dempsey Basso, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. She was born Aug. 7, 1931, in Suffern, New York, where she spent her years until graduating from Suffern High School in 1949.

She then attended and graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York, New York. She proceeded to marry her partner for life, Alfred J. Basso, enjoying 62 years together until his death in 2014.

Gerry and Al were married Aug. 30, 1952, and spent their early years in Paramus, New Jersey, creating a life for themselves. It wasn’t long before that life together started to include children, and a lot of them. They had a total of eight kids and raised them in Ramsey, New Jersey, initially, and eventually settled in Hockessin, Delaware, in 1971. No matter where Gerry lived, she made her house a home, was dedicated to her community and always a loyal friend.

While living in Hockessin, she was an active member of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church as a coordinator of Lectors, Liturgy Committee member and, most near and dear to her heart, co-founder of St. Mary’s Youth Group. Anyone involved with the youth group during her reign was challenged

by Gerry to find their singing voice during Sunday evening Mass, whether they wanted to or not!

She had an amazing gift for connecting with parish teens and helping them to discover God’s presence in their everyday life. Professionally, Gerry returned to work at the University of Delaware after her kids were grown or in school. She enjoyed her employment with the Bartol Research Foundation. Specifically, she was fascinated by the research being done at the South Pole and was always proud to be a part of it in some small way.

Gerry began a new life adventure in 1988 when she left those she loved in Delaware for Al’s career opportunity in Orlando, Florida. Never one to remain on the sidelines for long, she found employment with the distinguished Isleworth community as an executive administrative assistant.

In 1997, both she and Al fully retired and moved to Hyde Park in Winter Garden, Florida, where she continued to impact her community and embrace her new and

Virginia Mae (Lucas) Filer was born May 1, 1927, in Erie, Pennsylvania.

She passed, peacefully, on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at Health Central Park in Winter Garden, Florida, after an extended illness. Virginia was 89.

Virginia had a caring heart, loved to attend parties, and if there was a baby on the way, she had a handmade blanket; if there was a wedding on the horizon, she had a gift; and she made a point to acknowledge holidays and, especially, family birthdays and anniversaries. Once she was your friend, she was loyal to you for life.

Virginia loved to cook and bake, and a party wasn’t complete without a cheese and relish tray. Recently, her favorite pastimes that brought her joy were crafting, ice cream socials and trivia games presented by the Recreational Therapy Department at Health Central Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; two brothers; a sister; and her son-in-law, Joseph Hembrooke.

She is survived by her daughter,

Chesta Hembrooke, of Ocoee; sister, Pauline (Clifford D.) Hale, of Bonita Springs; and many other family members and friends.

A memorial reception will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at Quest Church (formerly St. Paul’s Presbyterian), Building 100.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Health Central Park’s Recreational Therapy Department.

Helen Lucille Powell, of Winter Garden, Florida, went home to her Savior on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017. Born July 19, 1919, in Hazelhurst, Georgia, Helen moved to Winter Garden as a young girl. She was a faithful woman of God and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She was married on July 29, 1939, to her devoted husband, Ewell Buford Powell.

A member of West Orange Park Community Church, she lived and worked for the Lord her whole life.

Sr. Master Sgt. Franklin “Frank” Townsend died peacefully at his home, surrounded by friends and family, on Jan. 26, 2017, in Apopka, Florida, at the age of 83, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Frank is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ann; sons John, Charles, Robert and Carl; brother, Tom, of Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Susie and P.C. Townsend; siblings Gene, Betty, Kathleen, Maxine and Annie; granddaughter, Bobi Sue; and daughter, Susan Gayle Murray.

Frank was born on Dec. 24, 1933, in Jasper, Alabama. He retired from the Air Force after serving 25 years and married Ann upon his return from Korea in 1953. Frank began work and eventually retired from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer.

During this time, the couple welcomed into their home five children, who remember him as an honorable and fair father who encouraged them to do what was right. Frank was an accomplished airplane and automobile mechanic. He was a dedicated individual who loved boating and was passionate about fishing. He was an active and dedicated lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4305.

A funeral was held on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, at Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home, in Gotha, Florida. Chaplain Joe Williams officiated. Donations may be made in Frank’s name to Hospice of the Comforter, and the family would like to thank caretakers Barb and Sammy for their care and dedication to keep Frank comfortable at home during his final days.

ith a due date of Jan. 26, Foundation Academy competitive cheerleading coach Adrienne Pilz figured she would be safe coaching her team through its first appearance at the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders’ National Christian Cheerleading Championships.

The competition was held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort Jan. 5 to 7 — three weeks ahead of the expected arrival of baby Ashton Pilz.

Turns out, though, that little Ashton was excited to make his grand entrance.

And although several quality programs will stand in their way — including an Apopka Blue Darters squad that has put together an impressive season of its own — the Warriors are optimistic they can continue to build on a strong start to the season in the remaining weeks.

“There’s always room for improvement; there’s always room to get better,” Montes said. “Everybody needs to push each other and hold each other accountable.”

“That was a huge blow for us as a team,” Iannuzzi said. “To take someone like (Paucar) and remove him from the lineup was difficult for everybody, because of his spirit and his love for the sport and the team.”

And although the team is down one of its better wrestlers, the Warriors have rallied around their injured teammate.

“They’ve done a phenomenal job,” Iannuzzi said of her team’s reaction to the adversity the accident created. “(Paucar) was able to come to King of the Ring, so we let him go get the trophy.”

Competitive cheerleading teams from West Orange and Ocoee each performed admirably at the 2017 Florida High School Competitive Cheerleading State Championships last weekend at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

West Orange’s team (66.75) placed third in the state in Class 2A’s Large Division — Coed competition behind Bartow (85.30) and Fleming Island (78.50).

ountless hours of practice and hard work have paid off for a number of senior varsity athletes in West Orange County in the form of college scholarships — something that was celebrated as part of National Signing Day festivities Feb. 1.

National Signing Day is most readily associated with football, though local schools often stage ceremonies on campus to recognize all of their athletes who will represent the school and the community at the next level — including those who may have signed during the fall’s Early Signing Period.

And although the signing of West Orange quarterback Austin Burton to Division I powerhouse UCLA is the most high-profile of the signings that took place Wednesday, each and every signing constitutes a milestone moment in the lives of our young men and women.

COPPER COIL CONUNDRUM A manufacturing design with Lennox-brand AC units has caused new homeowners much grief as they fork over hundreds of dollars for unexpected repair expenses.

omeowners living in newly constructed communities with Lennox air-conditioning units installed have reluctantly spent hundreds to thousands of dollars replacing faulty evaporator coil systems.

And they’re not happy.

After two to four years, the AC units tend to freeze up or stop blowing cold air. It is believed the troublesome coil systems malfunction due to poor manufacturing. While Lennox uses uncoated copper tubing inside its systems, most AC companies use aluminum coils, said Terry Strickland, the owner of Polar Express Air Conditioning & Heating LLC. “Everybody else is going to full aluminum coils,” Strickland said.

“Lennox is still the only one using the copper aluminum, and it’s not holding up. The copper we’re using today is so much thinner than it’s ever been because, again, everybody’s trying to save money.”

As someone who spends his time fixing AC units regularly, he’s seen several homeowners with Lennox-brand units experience this same issue. Last year, he estimates he made about 12 to 15 replacements, mostly in newly built homes in Winter Garden and Windermere.

A class-action lawsuit from 2015 over the issue has resulted in payouts for some homeowners who fell victim to unexpected repair expenses. Homeowners

eligible to join the class-action lawsuit were told they could get up $550 in reimbursement. However, Lennox still denies all the claims of the lawsuit and states it does not believe the copper tubing was related to the failures. And although Strickland said Lennox plans to move to aluminum coils, that transition hasn’t taken place.

“The coils that I pick up are still the same coils they’re having problems with, and the same coils I’m putting in are the same coils they’re having problems with,” he said. “And all they’re doing is trying to Band-Aid it until it’s out of warranty.”

Strickland said he’s often had to go back and replace a homeowner’s coil a second time. Generally, the lifespan of any AC unit, depending on the user’s maintenance, is 12 to 15 years. As a result, Strickland said he’s quit purchasing and selling AC units from any brands Lennox owns.

Tod Young, a homeowner in Windermere Trails who closed on his new home December 2013, had to spend $1,400 to replace his coil system after only two years. He was surprised to have his AC unit malfunction so quickly.

“It’s a new house and it’s new construction, so you would expect that the AC unit would not clock out within the first two years, and you’d have to spend $1,200-plus to have it replaced,” Young said.

Young’s AC unit started failing after the class-action lawsuit already had been settled, so he had to pay for the expenses out of pocket. He’s noticed there have been several AC repair trucks all over his community, which was built by Meritage Homes, and much discussion about the same

AC issue on a social-media community called NextDoor.

“Any day, you can drive through our community and you’ll see either Armstrong Air Conditioning or other AC repair companies in people’s driveway, daily,” Young added. “And they’re all having the same issue.”

Michael Manganiello, who lives in a town house in Wickham Park, paid $800 to have his AC coil system replaced. His 4-year-old AC unit stopped working last August.

He couldn’t believe his unit would malfunction so quickly either, because the previous homeowners only resided in the home for six months each year, and he had routine AC maintenance done annually.

“I’m not one of those notorious AC users who constantly have it on,” Manganiello said. “When I’m not home, I set it to 78 or 79 degrees, and when I’m home, I leave it at 77. ... I shouldn’t have any AC problems, especially when the unit is less than four years old.”

A few months later, after getting the coil system replaced, he noticed an advisory on his neighborhood’s website informing residents that many people in the community had experienced the same AC issue and there was a class-action lawsuit.

The experience has left Manganiello wary of Lennox units.

“I definitely won’t purchase anything related to Lennox in the future,” Manganiello said.

“They’re just criminals that build crappy parts that only last until the warranty expires.”

Lennox officials did not return repeated messages seeking comment.
