Historian and genealogist Allan Lane shares his ancestors’ war stories at speaking engagements.

Allan Lane has discovered several ancestors who fought in the Civil and Revolutionary wars and likes to tell their tales.

A

llan Lane’s fascination with Gettysburg began long before he even learned he had an ancestor who fought in the Civil War. When his highschool history teacher asked the students to give 15-minute presentations, Lane picked the Battle at Gettysburg, fought over three days in July 1963 in and around the Pennsylvania town.

“I’ve always been interested in history,” said Lane, a Winter Garden resident. “It’s always been a passion. As I’ve grown older and I’ve had more time, I could really devote myself to it. I always loved American history, world history, European history. I’ve been a pretty good reader all my life.”

Fast-forward to 1981, when Lane asked his father for any family information he had. Lane was told to contact a distant cousin, who had done some family research, and this cousin provided a great deal of information.

“This was long before the internet age, and there wasn’t a lot I could do with it,” said Lane, who, at the time, was an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“I couldn’t just take three months off my job and travel around to courthouses.”

His interest was piqued again when he worked as an investigator for a law firm and was tasked with doing historical research on

families who had land in Florida.

He opened an account with the genealogy website Ancestry.com and ultimately became interested in his own family.

Lane now is retired, so he has time to devote to his passions: history, ancestry and reading.

BATTLE LINES

Lane has read thousands of military records, transcripts, court documents and old maps to piece together the details of his ancestors’ stories during the Revolutionary and Civil wars. The history buff shares these stories at a genealogy club and through a speakers bureau within the Sons of the American Revolution organization.

The SAR’s mission is to preserve and share American history and promote patriotism. As president of the Lake-Sumter Chapter, Lane’s goal is to get more people interested in the details of America’s history.

Lane has five different talks: two on the Revolutionary War; two on the Civil War; and one on the War of the Regulation — all of which include either stories about his native state of North Carolina or his or his wife Vertis’ ancestors.

The War of the Regulation ended with the Battle of Alamance, an uprising in the Carolina colonies in which about 2,000 farmers, angry about excessive land taxes and land seizures, violently

took on reportedly corrupt Colonial officials.

Lane said his fifth-greatgrandfather was one of those farmers who took over the town of Hillsborough, North Carolina, destroyed court documents, tied up and beat the sheriff and used a team of horses and mules to pull down the sheriff’s house.

The grandfather, James Emerson, was one of only six who received a reprieve.

“He signed an oath and returned to his life as a farmer,” Lane said.

This battle ended five years before the Revolutionary War began.

Vertis Lane’s fifth-great grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Waxhaws. His story is documented in a pension application filed in 1812, Allan Lane said.

“Private Thomas Pearson, of the Continental Army’s Virginia Line, was wounded severely and somehow escaped and survived,” Lane said. “He had sword wounds to the head.”

The ancestral story of Gettysburg is Lane’s favorite to tell. The story comes full circle when 150 years after the battle he stood at the very site on which his maternal great-great-grandfather likely fought.

Private Charles Moody was in the Confederate Army’s North Carolina 26th Regiment in 1863.

The battle already had begun at Gettysburg on the morning of July 1 as the soldiers marched closer.

When they crossed a stream at Gettysburg called Willoughby Run, they engaged in a hardfought battle with an opposing regiment.

“They stood face to face and basically slaughtered each other,” Lane said.

His grandfather was wounded

in the left arm and both legs, which put him out of the battle, but he survived the war, Lane said. According to records, Moody recovered at a temporary hospital in Staunton, Virginia.

In his research, Lane discovered a transcription of a speech the North Carolina 26th commander gave at the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The commander described in detail what happened to his regiment that day and said the men got entangled in thorny brambles at the side of the ridge and were gunned down.

In 2013, Lane and his younger son went on a trip to Gettysburg.

“I also hired a licensed battlefield guide to search and guide me through the regiment movement on that day,” he said. “He showed me where the center of the line was — there’s two monuments there. … The next day, we crossed over Willoughby Run and went down about 50 yards where we believe the center of the line was.

“We started across and up the hill — and we had to stop because there were thorny brambles,” he said. “They were still there.”

SEARCHING RECORDS

To become a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, or its counterpart, the Daughters of the American Revolution, one has to show proof of a direct bloodline to a patriot — either a soldier or someone who provided goods to the states to help establish independence.

After much research, Lane discovered a patriot in his family tree: Isham Lane.

Allan Lane suggests folks looking for records to verify military service go to the Fold3 website, which has all of the National Archives Civil War records and many Revolutionary War records, he said.

“Once you get into that and figure out how the records are established, you find a lot of records that you hadn’t considered.”

Families currently zoned for the new relief school, dubbed Site 49, under construction in the Horizon West area of Winter Garden had an opportunity to ask questions and meet their new principal this week.

Orange County Public Schools, in conjunction with Orange County School Board Member Pam Gould, Orange County Transportation representatives and building officials, held a 40% construction meeting Monday, Jan. 28, at Keene’s Crossing Elementary School.

The school is being built at 16000 Water Spring Blvd., Winter Garden, to relieve overcrowding at Keene’s Crossing and Independence elementary schools.

Amy Klaber, former principal of Union Park Elementary, has been appointed to the principal’s position and was introduced to parents at the meeting. She lives in Winter Garden and said she’s excited to once again be working on the county’s west side.

“I look forward to meeting you and working with you and building your new school,” Klaber told parents.

Klaber has set up a Facebook page named Site 49, and she encouraged parents to check the page frequently for updates on construction, enrollment and other pertinent information.

A school-naming survey is taking place until 4 p.m. Feb. 8. Parents can go to goo.gl/ forms/0wgfVe12fzsJ69hf2 to provide a suggestion. The top three will be announced Feb. 11, and both parents and students will be able to vote.

The land at Site 49 was cleared in August, and tilt walls were up

by October. The roof and underground utilities were installed in November. The building dry-in was scheduled for completion last month.

The remaining timeline includes permanent power by March, a road extension and play fields by April, the HVAC chiller start-up by May and substantial completion by June 26.

Sustainability measures include native plants, energy-reduction lights that turn off in unoccupied spaces, water-saving toilets and faucets, daylighting in all classrooms and thermal-efficient windows and glazing.

The school is in Horizon West’s Village H, in the Storey Grove development west of Avalon Road.

The nearly 90,000-square-foot facility will have 837 student stations, parking for 125, a stacking ability of 141 vehicles and a bus loop with capacity to stack 32 buses.

approved unanimously at their Jan. 15 meeting a resolution that establishes the Ocoee Youth Council.

Commissioner George Oliver, a strong supporter of the city’s youth, has been leading the charge of establishing the council since he took office. “(With) the Ocoee Youth Council, our goal is to, first, educate,” Oliver said. “We want to be able to give kids — high schoolaged kids — an opportunity to come into our city to work with our city leadership, to understand our roles … (and) to understand some of the issues that we deal with when it comes to our citizens. Basically, (we’re) giving them an overview as to how local government works, because everything starts with local government.”

Oliver added the council will offer more than just experiencing government. Eventually, he hopes to be able to award scholarships to those who participate.

“We’re giving them the opportunity to collect volunteer hours for school, for graduation and eventually be able to give out scholarships to those kids that complete the program,” he said.

High-schoolers won’t be the only students involved with the program. The selection process of the council members also will involve students from Valencia College. “(For) the selection process, we’ve decided to utilize the student-government body at Valencia,” Oliver said. “They have a small committee of young adults (who) will come together and interview kids (who apply). ... The kids will apply through their schools, or they can actually reach out directly to us.

Oakland considers switch to uniform LED street lights The conversion would save the town money and give Oakland a more unified look.

If you’re driving around Oakland at night, chances are you’ve noticed the variation in street lights.

The streets in historic Oakland have cobra lights positioned high up on wooden poles. Arrington Street is lighted with a shoebox style. Some of the newer subdivisions, such as Winters Landing and Southern Oaks, have the short, decorative acorn lights atop metal poles. Oakland Park has a combination of acorn lights and open birdhouse LED lights.

In the Longleaf neighborhood under construction, plans call for the installation of top-hat LED lights on Colonial poles.

In October, the Oakland Town Commission discussed lighting standards in the town, and Town Planner Jay Marder solic-

ited a proposal from Duke Energy for replacing the town’s existing street lights with a newer and more energy-efficient LED street light.

However, town staff isn’t certain which lights belong to the town as opposed to individual homeowners associations. Marder told elected officials at the Jan. 22 Town Commission meeting he is waiting for Duke Energy to provide a lighting map and then will present his findings to commissioners.

They could then request that Duke upgrade all of the town’s lights, allowing the diversity to continue while encouraging new residential developers to use LED lights that are dark-sky compliant and encourage but not require fixtures with hats or lidded bulbs to comply with the dark-sky program.

Dark-sky communities use lighting that minimizes glare while reducing sky glow.

Oakland would not have to pay additional funds for the conversion to LED, which are more efficient and give off a clearer light, Marder said.

where they will interview with a small panel of college-aged students,” Oliver said. “The students from Valencia will then make a recommendation to our elected officials as to who should serve (on the council).”

Once council members are selected, they eventually will be “attending meetings and setting up projects that will start making impacts in the community,” Oliver said.

Oliver added that council members also will work with city commissioners and staff to enhance their experience.

“That gives them a firsthand look as to how we operate as to our leadership,” he said. “The way it looks is that they will be shadowing us. My responsibility is to make sure that I educate first and act as a mentor.”

Prior to approving the resolution, commissioners discussed concerns over Sunshine Laws and educating the council’s members on how they work.

“What kind of shouted out to me was a concern regarding these meetings having to be in the sunshine,” Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen said. “You’re dealing with youth. I don’t know the legal aspects of this, but when you have a group like this ... everything’s supposed to be done in the sunshine, (and) you’re putting a lot of responsibility on youth to abide by that issue. It’s hard enough for some adults to abide by it, but now you’re dealing with children.”

City attorney Scott Cookson said Florida statutes don’t prohibit youth from serving on a board. He added the resolution the commissioners were addressing at the meeting simply establishes the council, “but it doesn’t lay out what they’re going to do.”

“We would establish the Ocoee Youth Council now, and it would

come back to the City Commission to determine what exactly they’re going to do, when they’re going to meet, what are they going to advise on (and) exactly what the scope of that group would be,” Cookson said.

Oliver said there are various other cities that offer youth council programs — some of which have had such programs for many years. He added the structure the city of Ocoee is using for its council is being modeled after councils that have been established in other cities.

“It did not come easy,” Oliver said, referring to approving the resolution to establish the council. “There’s definitely concerns — legitimate concerns — when you take our children and put them in a situation where they may be subject to Sunshine Laws, or not. We had to have that discussion to let the other commissioners know that these programs have existed up to 20 years in certain cities. We’re not going to put our kids in harm’s way, but I am happy that we had come to a consensus and we’ve passed this (resolution) and now we’re able to move forward.”

Although the commission will dictate the specific roles of the council at a later date, Oliver already has an idea.

“They will get together and talk about ... issues that affect them within the city limits,” he said.

“They will make proposals or at least have discussion on those things and bring them back to our City Commission and let them know, ‘Here are our concerns, but also here’s some solutions that we’d like to explore.’”

n Under the consent agenda, commissioners certified CPH Inc., CPWG Inc. and DRMP Inc. as pre-qualified firms to assist in the town’s various planning, technical and design needs.

Town Manager Steve Koontz will enter into negotiations with each of the firms to reach a Continuing Professional Engineering Agreement. n Commissioners agreed to write a letter of support to the Department of Environmental Protection for the Oakland Nature Preserve, which is seeking a Recreational Trails Program grant of up to $400,000 to help replace the planking and upper portion of the elevated boardwalk to Lake Apopka. The 3,100-foot-long boardwalk was built in 2002 using wood planks, which, over time, have warped or been damaged by weather.

ONP Director Jennifer Hunt said dangerous boards are replaced weekly.

The preserve would use the money to replace the boards with composite decking that should reduce maintenance costs and extend the life of the boardwalk.

The commission also approved allowing ONP to use town funds and staff to support

the payment of invoices and reimbursement from the state for the project. n Mayor Kathy Stark proclaimed Feb. 16, 2019, Jim Thomas Day in the town of Oakland. The proclamation will be presented to Thomas during the Oakland Nature Preserve’s open house that day. n Elected officials, by consensus, granted Eagle Scout candidate Caleb Farr, of Boy Scout Troop 145, permission to move forward with his project to construct a memorial to soldiers and/or other heroes in the community. The memorial would be erected in the northeast quadrant of Speer Park and would include four monuments — one each for military members and, possibly, mayors, police chiefs and notable residents — as well as a walkway, benches and flagpole with solar lights. The town’s cost would be installing a sidewalk extension to the project and providing staff to oversee the construction. n The commission confirmed Commissioner Joseph McMullen as the delegate to MetroPlan Orlando’s Municipal Advisory Committee for another year.

Worthy Cakes sweetens Ocoee Worthy Cakes is known for selling its products at local farmers markets. Now, the owners have opened up their first brick-and-mortar location.

Asha Worthy-Robinson loves cake so much that she began baking them at age 9 so she could have it whenever she wanted.

Now, the 29-year-old cake creator is operating her own cake shop and bakery-supply business in Ocoee.

“I was the one in middle school bringing cupcakes to class all the time,” she said with a laugh. “I was that girl.”

Grace Worthy. The shop has operated under a soft opening since late December and officially opened mid-January. Prior to opening the brick-and-mortar location, Worthy Cakes set up shop at local farmers markets.

Products are also sold at local Tijuana Flats and Wahlburgers locations, Worthy said.

“We started working out there in the farmers market, the Winter Garden one, and we (also) do the Lake Eola one in downtown (Orlando),” Worthy-Robinson said. “That’s how Tijuana Flats found out about us. They were so interested in the push-up cakes that we do that they wanted to carry them in their stores.”

The shop offers custom cake creations, as well as a wide variety of baking supplies for other confectionery connoisseurs.

From cookie cutters and fondant to cake boards and cake boxes, Worthy Cakes is sure to meet the needs of any baker. The shop also offers Worthy Cakes’ farmers market staples — cakes in a jar and push-up cake pops — for those looking for a quick cake fix on the go. The shop even offers vegan, gluten-free and keto options. Customers who want to order a custom cake can place orders on site, online or by phone.

“I wanted to make sure we carried things for people that do (chocolate-dipped) strawberries, people that do candy apples (or) people that do cookies,” WorthyRobinson said. “It’s so hard to find professional, quality (baking) products without having to order it online.

“We’ve had bakers stop by, and they’re just excited because they can get their supplies on the west side (of the county),” Worthy said.

Although Worthy-Robinson has been baking cakes for 20 years, she never went to culinary school. Instead, she was a student of the TV baking shows and YouTube. Worthy helped along the way with some of the cake recipes. She didn’t go to culinary school, however, she did get a

degree in health science.

“She would go on YouTube channels to get different ideas,” Worthy said. “She self-taught herself, which I’m really proud of her (for that). She didn’t ask me for anything. All I did was have recipes, but as far as this other fancy stuff that she does, she’s totally self-taught.

“My favorite TV shows to watch were ‘Ace of Cakes,’ and, of course, Carlo’s Bakery, and now he’s in the Florida Mall,” WorthyRobinson said. “I picked up a lot of things from watching them faithfully, whenever it was on.”

Worthy-Robinson and her mother both live in Ocoee. They used to bake the cakes for their business at a commercial kitchen in Oviedo. In addition, they also traveled to various shops

around Orange County — many on the east side — to get the supplies they needed to run their business. With their brick-andmortar location close to home and because they now sell bakery supplies, the mother-daughter duo behind Worthy Cakes can look forward to a lot less driving to operate their business.

“We needed our own, personal space,” Worthy-Robinson said.

“Before we had this location, it was just always me having to go to the east side of town if I needed stuff for decorating. So I was like, ‘Well let’s just put the two (businesses) together. Let’s do both (cakes and supplies).’”

The Hamlin Chalk Art Festival is coming to town from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. The community is invited to experience a day of artistic adventure and watch 10 professional chalk artists bring their art to life.

According to the Hamlin events team, the chalk festival will consist of seven — there will be one threeperson team — individual chalkart pieces, with an overarching theme of love. “I have been chalking for over 15 years now,” she said. “I first joined the FCAA 11 years ago, and I have been president for the last three years. I’ve done art all my life, and I was in school for art. At the time, I was into mural art. I stumbled across chalk art during an event and thought it would be something interesting to do, because it was large pieces, which is what I’m used to doing.”

She will be working with fellow chalk artists Hector Diaz and Ken Mullen, otherwise known as the “Chalk Guys,” to create a 3D candy factory in a 13-by-25-foot workspace. The “canvas” has to be large and extensive, she said, so that when someone takes a photo of it, it appears to have depth and dimension.

“It’s just a fascinating process for people to actually watch artists while they’re working,” she said of creating the piece. “And the pastels are generally such bright, rich colors that it’s nice and fun to interact with everything and see how the process unfolds. It’s also going to be a good community event, because each family can purchase a square to chalk on their own.”

West Orange Trail is right out here, because it forces you to come down the middle of our downtown, and then you have to cross over Plant Street,” Bollhoefer said. “We’ve had many people complain about it, so now we’re trying to fix that.

The project begins, as you’re pulling out of the City Hall parking lot in the far west, where that oval is located. It takes that oval and some land over here and combines it all to a large rectangular area. So the project will take space that is really not usable right now and make it into an active and large downtown park area.”

The project, still in the preliminary planning stages and has not received City Commission approval, seeks to realign 350 feet of the trail and modify the surrounding area of that trail section to create an event/park area.

IN OTHER NEWS n Winter Garden city commissioners passed the first readings of ordinances 19-08 and 19-09, which concern pension plans for firefighters, police officers and general city of Winter Garden employees. The ordinances seek to implement changes required by the internal revenue codes.

The city currently is working on obtaining a $200,000 state grant to help fund the first phase of the potential project, which is estimated to cost about $400,000, according to city documents. The total estimated cost of the project would be about $2 million, Bollhoefer said.

t was an evening of games, puzzles, laughing and learning at Ocoee Elementary School’s annual Science Night Wednesday, Jan. 23. Ocoee Cardinals took part in a variety of educational games that emphasize principles of science, technology, engineering and math. The goal of Science Night is to spark interest in science among students and families. Many of the activities featured household items so activities easily can be replicated at home.

Held this year at Ocoee High, the competition is for middleand high-school students. The student teams competed in 23 different events, and top teams at the regional event advanced to the state level to join winners from six other regions.

was in his first band at 19, Chambers has been playing professionally for about 20 years.

“I started my career in 1998 playing with Hubert Sumlin,” Chambers said. “I got the opportunity to play with him for four-and-a-half years, and he took me all around the world. … I’ve been real fortunate that I’ve been able to see a lot of the world playing the blues.”

Chambers taught himself how to play guitar when he first started playing. Although he was in band in middle school, he never took guitar lessons and learned by ear.

He used to listen to tapes over and over and try to replicate the sounds he heard on his own guitar.

“Nowadays, you have the luxury of pulling a tutorial video on YouTube and you can do a lesson,” Chambers said. “When I was a kid growing up, I pretty much had a tape player — my cassette deck — and I would listen to something, stop it, try to figure it out, back it up, figure out part-by-part and pretty much played by ear.”

Chambers said one of the most enjoyable parts of performing is the energy he feels from the audience.

“Whenever you have got a good crowd, it’s kind of full circle,” he said. “You put out energy with the music and they’re into it and … you’re getting the vibe from them that they’re really into it, and it kind of makes us play better. That energy and feeding off the crowd is my favorite thing about performing live.”

Sean Chambers was a teenager when he discovered the blues. He got his first guitar at age 11 but didn’t hear the blues until he was about 15, when a friend introduced him to Jimi Hendrix.

“I heard ‘Red House’ by Jimi Hendrix, and that made me know that I wanted to play blues,” Chambers said. “My buddy … came and picked me up one day, and he put in a tape and turned it on and it was ‘Red House’ by Jimi Hendrix, which I had never heard before.

When I heard ‘Red House,’ it hit me like a ton of bricks. That’s the kind of stuff I want to do right there.

That’s what I’ve been looking for — that sound. Ever since then, I’ve been playing the blues and learning the blues.”

Chambers will be the first to perform at the eighth annual Winter Garden Blues & BBQ Festival Saturday, Feb. 9. The festival runs from 4 to 10 p.m., and Chambers will hit the stage at the start of the event.

The city’s annual celebration is free to attend, and beer and barbecue will be available for purchase.

Profits of the event will benefit various Winter Garden nonprofits and community organizations.

Born in Melbourne but raised in Tampa, Chambers, now 50, has had a long music career that has taken him across the globe. The singer/ songwriter and guitarist has performed in countries such as Japan, Canada, Ireland and England. He also has played all over the United States — from New York to Los Angeles — and many other cities in-between. Although he’s been playing guitar since he was 11 and

After going on a 44-6 run in the second half against Cape Coral Mariner, the Ocoee boys basketball team was about to seal a victory the players knew was bigger than your ordinary regular-season win.

hit 0.0, it would notch head coach John “Sarge” Siers’ 300th win.

“We were at Apopka, so they were going over to the water cooler, and I looked over my shoulder and I was like, ‘Don’t do anything dumb — there’s a tournament going on, there are other games, and we’re not at our gym,’” Siers said. “So they were like, ‘Oh yeah,’ and started laughing. I thought it was squashed.”

As junior Khiana Franklin walks up to the bar that sits in front of her, she loosens herself up while teammates shout sup-

portive words. She grips the bar and cleanly brings it above her collarbone, before tossing it over her head.

There’s no real pressure here — it’s just a practice, after all — but it’s in this weight room where the Warriors prepare, and it’s where Parker is teaching his craft within a program looking to grow and find success.

“My biggest enjoyment — and this has been why I got involved coaching girls — is that you still see a pure enjoyment or satisfaction of success,” Parker said. “You take one of these girls who hasn’t lifted much — or lifted at all — and they accomplish a lift, and you get them to compete a little bit and start trying to beat the girl next to them, and then they actually win a trophy or stick a big lift, you see that enjoyment.”

Jaeden Trost A home-schooled student, Jaeden Trost has made a name for himself on the West Orange High wrestling team — thanks in part to his background in jiu-jitsu. Trost eventually wants to run his own jiu-jitsu gym after he graduates in a few years.

When did you get into wrestling, and what got you started?

I originally got into wrestling because of my jiu-jitsu background. I heard about wrestling — which could help my jiu-jitsu — so I kind of picked up wrestling about a year ago.

What’s the biggest difference between wrestling and jiu-jitsu?

Not going to your back. In jiujitsu, you want to be on your back, because it’s a defensive position, but in wrestling, you can’t do that.

What’s been your favorite part about wrestling?

Just the hard grit about it.

Jiu-jitsu is more of a flow-y sport — it uses joint locks and everything — but wrestling is just pure grit and just helps with the mental side of it.

What’s been a highlight since you started wrestling at West Orange?

I guess finding more friends, because I’m home-schooled.

Finding more friends and having an actual team is more fun.

How long have you been studying jiu-jitsu?

I’m just coming up on four years for jiu-jitsu, and a neighbor of mine actually introduced me into going into their jiu-jitsu program. The goal was if you brought in three people, you got an Xbox 360, so I was one of them.

What is the most difficult thing about wrestling?

Weight cutting. That’s the thing that is the hardest for me, because I love food.

When you’re not wrestling or doing jiu-jitsu, what do you like doing in your spare time?

YouTube and video games. I usually search up jiu-jitsu or wrestling videos on YouTube, or when I just need a break, I’ll just relax and play video games.

fter a fairly close first half, Windermere used a strong second half to push past West Orange in a 80-51 road win Tuesday, Jan. 21.

It was a whole team effort for the Wolverines (18-2, 5-0), with Dakota Rivers leading the team with 23 points. Josh Colon added 18 points, while Dante Love and Trey Moss threw in 15 points apiece.

The Warriors (5-12, 2-2) were led on the court by Jamarcus Clark’s 15 points. Eric Wynn added 12 points.

This season has had its great moments, but it’s also largely been one of high ups and downs so far, which is to be expected for a growing program.

Parker and his girls came into the season without several seniors who played a big role in the successes of last season, when the Warriors won districts and finished as runners-up in the Metro and state regionals.

The core quad of Eumica Eugene (154-pound weight class), Trinity Leath (139), Shermyra Harp (129) and Khiana Franklin (199) all returned this season to help the Warriors through three wins in their four regular-season matches.

“We had a good core, but the problem is this year, we didn’t really grow in size in the number of girls who come out and participate, so we were reliant on those same girls,” Parker said.

That issue during the regular season is tough enough, but it’s an incredibly difficult task come postseason. Since signing on to be a coach on the girls wrestling team in 2013, it’s something that Parker has become familiar with.

With the lack in numbers, the Warriors team was hit hardest going into Metro and districts, Parker said. Without the numbers, it’s hard to fill out a weight

bracket — which means losing out on important points.

A combination of lack of depth and Shermyra getting sick around Metro/district meets led the Warriors to finish seventh (out of 10) at Metro and 10th (out of 10) at districts.

Although finding numbers for sports such as girls weightlifting is difficult, Parker said the biggest issue was trying to get the staff in place to help establish a routine for the girls.

“This was the first year that we had to go through that transition of not having a fall sport coach, or having a coach who was not in a fall sport, to start us out — I think that probably weighed a little bit more there, but I don’t think we lost too much,” Parker said. “With every season comes its own complications. This year, it just happened to be at the administrative level.

We found out what worked and didn’t work, and we will be a little bit better with that next year.”

Those competitions were a tough blow, but along with those lows came some pretty impressive highs — especially at regional.

Despite an 11th-place finish, Franklin took home first place in her weight class with a 320-pound total lift (150 on the bench and 170 in the cleanand-jerk), which catapulted her

to states. The achievement is something that didn’t surprise Parker; Franklin won in regionals last year, as well.

“She has a good chance at placing in the state championship,” Parker said. “She’s been a competitor ever since I had her as a freshman — she’s just a very competitive young lady.

Physically and muscularly, she is in good shape, so weightlifting happened to be a natural fit for her.”

While Franklin travels down to Panama City Beach for states in just two weeks, Parker will continue to adjust game plans and look ahead to next season.

Having competitors make it to states is incredible for the program, but if the team as a whole could attain that same high performance level, it could lead to great things, Parker said.

“What we really want to do is try to have a concentrated effort on getting that whole team to where the team walks in, and who we are competing against knows they’re going to face a regional/state contender at each weight class,” Parker said.

“That takes a little time and some work, and again, I think it takes the girls getting used to a routine. … I think we have done a pretty good job establishing some of that, and we are here to do that.”

Siers’ 300th win built on talent and teamwork CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13

dominant 74-35 win, and with it his players abided by his rule — at least for the time being.

Players quickly made their way into the locker room, where they grabbed small cups of water.

Then, they waited.

The well-muffled sound of laughing was the only noise made, as Siers made his way to the locker room, where he stopped for a split second before the celebration kicked in.

He was met with a pelting of water from all sides — like that of a Florida summer storm — as the celebratory yells echoed through the room.

“When I walked in, it was pretty cool,” Siers said. “One of the first kids to run over and start throwing water at me was my son, so that was pretty awesome.”

The 300th win for Siers is just the latest of accomplishments for the longtime head coach, who has been at the helm of the Ocoee boys basketball program since 2015.

The man many call “Sarge” — a longtime nickname that came from the time when he sported a mustache and flattop, leading to another coach telling kids that he was former pro wrestler Sergeant Slaughter — has had longreaching effects on a program that needed a boost.

After years coaching on all levels of basketball — from high school to winning a national title at Norfolk State — Siers landed with an Ocoee basketball program that hadn’t found much success, nor consistency, in its short history.

Before Siers, Ocoee had never won a title of any kind. It had

never been as competitive as it should have been. Then, that all changed.

“The school is 12 years old,” he said. “I’m the only coach to take the school to a regional tournament, I’m the only coach that’s won a district championship, and I’m the only coach to be named regional coach of the year in basketball. We’ve built a culture. As good as some of the other teams at Ocoee were, they’ve never made it to a district championship game. Being able to do that and build a culture that has a chance to win championships — that’s pretty cool.”

And the success Siers has pushed his players to goes beyond the hardwood. Of the 42 guys who would go on to play Division I basketball following their time with Siers, all graduated with their degrees.
