Introducing Westly, the advocate for health Healthy West Orange has created a fun mascot to represent the local initiative at fitness and health events in the community.

Westly is here to encourage you to be healthy and get fit. This nongendered figure is serving as an advocate for healthy community decisions, said Lesa Boettcher, manager of Healthy West Orange, and it represents “the everyperson in the community.”

This mascot was created last year using the letters O for the head, W for the upper body and arms and H for the lower body.

“We use him to be a face and a fun aspect of the campaign,” Boettcher said. “He is showing the fun side of making our community the healthiest in the nation … so the message isn’t intimidating.”

Life-sized cardboard Westlys were placed around West Orange County last year, the O cut out so residents committed to getting fit could take selfies with it and post them on social media.

Boettcher said the Westly figures have been collected and will be set out at select times.

“If we have him out, it’s a special event,” she said. “Say we’re doing a healthy harvest festival.

We may put him out in advance so people know this has something to do with Healthy West Orange, maybe at a marathon or half marathon, and he’ll be present for photo opps.”

HWO officials are hoping to launch a Twitter account for Westly.

“We want people to relate to him,” Boettcher said. “He’s not a doctor, he’s a community member, just like them.”

This month, the virtual creation Westly has been promoting the Virtual 5K event, which was created to get people moving when it’s convenient for them.

“We wanted it to be flexible,” Boettcher said. “Between work schedules and life schedules, we

know not everyone in the community can show up for a scheduled walk.”

The event runs through January, and 326 people have signed up so far. To register, visit healthywestorange. org/westlys-run. Participants receive a T-shirt and medal.

“It’s been a huge success,” Boettcher said. “We’re encouraging people to hike, walk, run, move in any form and complete a 5K and post it.”

Some folks have posted photos of themselves individually or with groups, such as a group run or bicycle ride.

The event culminates with a group walk Saturday, Jan. 27. Participants will meet at 8 a.m at the Winter Garden Station on the West Orange Trail. The path will be marked, and groups and individuals are welcome.

Ever since he watched his father perform orthopedic surgeries as a child, Dr. William “Kevin” Cox knew he also wanted to learn the ability to repair physical injuries.

Observing his father’s skill with a scalpel at the hospital sparked his intellectual curiosity, and it wasn’t long before he, too, decided to enter the medical field.

Fast-forward a few decades, and the observant son has now become an expert in orthopedic surgery, performing an average of 500 surgeries per year throughout his 25 years of experience.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

“I can remember just as a small boy always wanting to do this,” said Oakland resident Cox, who owns West Orange Orthopedics in Ocoee. “I love working with my hands, and this combines helping people and working with my hands, so it suits me very well.”

For the first 10 years of his career, Cox took trauma calls at Orlando Regional Medical Center in downtown Orlando, where he performed surgeries for severe injuries, such as motorcycle and construction accidents.

His very first surgery is one he never will forget.

“It was a broken elbow,” he said. “It was at night, and

the attending surgeon, he just grabbed me by the arm and said, ‘Do you want to fix an elbow?’

So we just went into surgery right away. I didn’t really have a lot of time to get nervous; I just did what I was taught to do.”

But as his surgical practice matured, he eventually leaned toward joint-replacement surgeries, and he now specializes in them — performing about 250 full or partial joint-replacement surgeries in a year.

“My favorite thing to do is joint replacements because it makes people’s pain go away,” he said. “So they’re very happy, and that makes us happy.“ By us, Cox refers to his wife, Jill, who joined the practice as a nurse in July after she had an accident and broke her leg in 33 places and required 14 screws to repair.

Their son, Jacob — who also

observed his father perform surgeries as a young child before privacy laws changed — is currently in Tampa finishing his residency in orthopedic care in Tampa. Jacob, they proudly declared, also plans to join the family business in two years – making him the third generation to join the family practice.

EVOLVING TECHNOLOGY AND TOOLS

As time goes on, the medical tools and technology that assist surgeons like Cox have become more sophisticated.

One particular piece of equipment that aids Cox is known as Mako technology, which facilitates joint-replacement surgeries and further reduces the risk of an error.

“The way it works is that, for example, if it was your hip that needed replacing, a CT scan

would make a digital image of your hip, and the surgery is actually done on the computer ahead of time,” Cox said. “And then on the day of the surgery, I open the hip up and the robot helps me produce exactly what we’ve designed to do pre-operation. It helps us be very precise.”

However, Cox and his wife are aware not everyone has access to the common, basic tools used by someone in his profession, much less the sophisticated technology constantly being produced that seems to improve every month.

With that knowledge and the help of Mosaic Church in Winter Garden, the Cox family has taken four mission trips to Ethiopia to lend a helping hand to other surgeons who have no option other than to work with antiquated equipment.

“When you go there and see how far behind they are in the technology, it’s just very humbling,” Jill Cox said. “You go there, and it’s like you’re stepping back in time to about 75 years ago where there are no hip replacements. You break your hip there, and you die. But we found a company up in Washington state that makes thirdworld hips, which sounds kind of weird, but it’s basically a hip that can be inserted with hand tools because they don’t have any power tools to operate with.

So we actually got this company to give us a hip system to take over there.”

According to Kevin Cox, one location they visited had only one surgeon performing all the surgeries. But some surgeries, such as broken femurs, could not be repaired due to the limited tools in their possession.

“There was only one surgeon there, and he did it all,” Kevin Cox said. “Deliver babies, removes appendixes and everything. And he does 250 surgeries a month.”

To help the clinic, the couple took surplus medical equipment — including medical textbooks, bone saws and battery-powered drills — that was donated from Health Central and other hospitals to aid the Ethiopian surgeons.

Once Kevin Cox retires, Jill said, the couple hopes to dedicate six months of their time every year to help out more, living half the year in Ethiopia and half in America.

t can be hard to tell if a protein shake is working for you.

Whether your goals are building muscle, cutting calories, cultivating mass or just trying to get leaner, it takes a lot of work to balance workouts, food intake and supplements. Many people use protein shakes, which help with muscle growth and recovery, as a way to bolster their exercises and diets. But it’s not always as easy to see if it’s helping with results.

A group of dietitians, gym owners and weight-loss professionals weighed in on whether protein shakes are truly what you need to get the body you want.

“We’re big fans of protein shakes here,” said Stephanie Nickitas, owner of Crossfit Winter Park.

“It shouldn’t be your only source of protein, of course, but you should connect it with exercise and working out. People think that to lose weight, you should avoid a protein shake, but that’s not necessarily true.

Nickitas believes the shakes serve a vital role in the exercise process — it adds extra protein to someone’s diet. For some, that makes all the difference.

“If you push yourself hard in running or Crossfit, and then you don’t feed your body, you’re slowing down your metabolism,” she said. “And that’s going to lead to more fat.”

Nickitas, who served as the University of Central Florida’s head women’s tennis coach for nine years before joining Crossfit, encourages finding protein mixes that avoid using too many ingredients or artificial flavors.

She recommends people look for whey protein isolate rather than protein concentrate and to avoid using a redundant amount of powder in a serving.

“You really just need 20 to 25 grams a serving size,” Nickitas said. “The human body can’t really handle much more.”

As for the issue of dairy, Nickitas simply suggested lactoseintolerant people avoid the dairybased whey ingredients.

GOING GREEN

Weight-loss coach Susas Adada believes there are healthier ways than shakes to get your protein.

“You’re either getting animal protein or plant-based protein, but a lot of supplements are animal derivatives,” she said. “The ideal situation is to get all the protein you need from a plant-based diet. When you get proteins from animals, it isn’t always as clean.”

Adada, who studied nutrition and physiology at the University of Florida, said whey and casein, two ingredients found in many protein shakes, are more difficult for our bodies.

“Heavily processed animal derivatives tax our organs, particularly the kidneys or

Rukhsana Shanbhag, a Winter Park dietitian and nutritionist, is comfortable with people drinking their protein shakes in moderation.

“Food is always going to be the best source of nutrition,” Shanbhag said. “But when people are sick and can’t eat on their own, or they’ve just missed breakfast, they still need their protein.

Shakes can help with that.”

She noted that for people looking to avoid animal-based proteins, there are plant-based shakes on the market like RawVegan, and she said to make sure what they’re buying is organic. Like Nickitas, she encourages consumers to look for shakes that are without artificial sweeteners and are rich with amino acids, which help muscle growth.

“If it’s a good protein shake, it’s going to list everything you need right on the packaging,” Shanbhag said.

to work. For others, the road less traveled is more appealing. And with Florida’s plentiful sunshine and diverse population, Orange County offers a plethora of interesting — and fun — ways to get and, more importantly, stay in shape. As we all make commitments to better ourselves in 2018, here are just a few of the lesser-known exercise activities available in our community.

Esther Allen has been teaching tai chi for more than three decades.

“I went to take a Winter Park adult class (years ago) to learn Italian, but the teacher was out for the day,” Allen said. “So I said, ‘Well, I’m here; what should I do?’ And I took a tai chi class, and I’ve never left it.”

Tai chi, a form of Chinese moving meditation exercise, has been practiced for centuries around the globe. Every Tuesday morning, the Altamonte Springs retiree teaches an hourlong lesson to nearly 20 elders at the Maitland Senior Center. Some of her pupils have stayed with her for more than two decades.

“Once they’re hooked, they stay for years,” Allen said.

Senior center attendees learn tai chi shuan — a specific style Allen said has 37 different postures, 66 with repetition.

Allen fractured her wrist in June and attributes tai chi and its healing properties to her rapid recovery.

“Fractures take six to eight weeks to heal, but mine healed in four-and-a-half weeks,” she said. “It’s because we’re dealing with chi, your inner healing energies and strength. The doctor told me he had never seen anything like it.”

She said new members just have to show up if they want to join.

“It gives you balance, it keeps you focused,” Allen said. “You don’t have to know anything beforehand or be flexible. Just come in and have a good time.”

You’ve heard of yoga, but have you ever thought about practicing it in a room heated between 105 and 108 degrees?

Amy Whiting, managing partner of Hot on Yoga in Winter Garden, said hot yoga originated when people realized that heat was lengthening to the muscles.

They began putting space heaters in the room and found that as they moved, their bodies had more flexibility.

“Within that, it’s not actually the muscles that get lengthened, it’s the connective tissue around the muscles,” she said. “When you give heat to that connective tissue, it sort of melts, like beeswax. You give the connective tissue a little more leeway for the muscles to work into.”

The combination of heat and movement helps stimulate the circulatory system and the lymphatic system. For this reason, hot yoga helps to ward off joint pain and make organs more efficient.

“It’s yoga, and it goes back to not just the physiology of the body and strengthening mus-

cles. … It always stems back to the mind,” Whiting said. “When you add the heat element it challenges those things. … The more you practice staying with challenging moments, you’re able to break your boundaries and old patterns and create new patterns.”

At Hot on Yoga, there are two styles offered: the traditional (Bikram) series or the vinyasa flow class. The former is heated anywhere from 105 to 108 degrees and up to 30% humidity, while the latter is heated to around 95 degrees because more movement is required.

“All of our classes are very much for all levels,” Whiting said. “That being said, if you’ve never practiced yoga a day in your life, it’s very much inclusive. It’ll be a challenge but also accessible.”

Whiting stressed that before you try hot yoga you must be properly hydrated. Don’t take in excessive amounts of water, but don’t skip out on the hydration, as it’s necessary for the optimal hot yoga experience.

Introductory rates start at $25 for one week of unlimited yoga, or $59 for an intro month. Bring a full-length towel and yoga mat to class, or rent from the studio for $2 apiece. The studio also has showers for participants to use.

It’s a common refrain from fitness professionals: If nothing else, do something you enjoy so you will stick with it.

For Windermere resident Heather Oles, that something is water skiing.

“I saw skiers out on the lake and I thought, ‘Oh, that looks like a lot of fun — I want to give it a shot,’” Oles said. “It’s fun, and you get to be outside.”

“You’re outside, you meet great people, the lake is beautiful,” Desboyaux said. “You don’t feel like you’re working out because it’s a very fun sport.”

Despite the fun one might have out on the water, the health benefits are tangible.

“It’s really good for your core,” Desboyaux said. “It’s going to be good for your back and really good for your legs.”

One of the main reasons that Oles has stuck with the sport, and training at Florida Ski School, for four years is the health benefits it has provided.

“I kept with it because it’s an amazing workout and it’s super time-efficient,” Oles said.

“In 30 minutes, you’ve had an amazing workout. Every muscle of your body is taxed.”

It may look intimidating to a beginner, but knowledgeable water skiing instructors have ways to teach the craft that are gradual and effective, as Oles

came to find out.

“I found Franck and he has the perfect setup for beginners,” Oles said. “You can gradually learn from the beginning — he made it really easy to get started.”

Having an instructor with years of experience, as Desboyaux has, helps, too.

“I can start them at 2 years old,” Desboyaux said. “We make it fun for everyone.”

Colette Richards didn’t always spend her days rowing in a boat at 5 a.m.

“It started in 2014 when my seventh-grade daughter took a rowing class and comes back to me and says, ‘Mom, you have to do this,’” Richards said. “I’ve been rowing ever since.”

Richards has been the vice president of the Winter Park Women’s Crew for four years now, a group that typically takes its athletes from Winter Park High School. When she’s not teaching people how to row, she’s either rowing herself or training

for when she can.

“It was definitely different when I started,” Richards said.

“I had done field sports (in the past), but it was different working as a group to win the race.”

A boat typically seats eight people, and all eight are needed to get the job done.

“When you’re out there on the water with each person working in unison, the glide and speed you get is the definition of motion in strength,” Richards said.

The health benefits are evident: greater muscle definition,

improved cardio, increased flexibility. But it takes some work to get there.

“It’s a lot of cardio training with high pain endurance,” Richards said. “You have to learn to push through, two hours a day for five days a week. But then you’re done at six or seven in the morning, and you can start your day.”

But Richards started from the beginning, and she’s confident others can, too.

“Look at a local rowing class,” Richards said. “Just go try.”

E-bikes — or electronic bikes — are capitalizing on the growing popularity of bicycling. According to Len Mattioli, the owner of Crazy Lenny’s E-Bikes — which

will open a location in February on Plant Street in Winter Garden — the reason for the growing popularity of e-bikes is simple.

“Because they’re fun — they’re as much fun as a regular bicycle, but you don’t have the difficulty of maybe getting caught in the headwind or going uphill,” Mattioli said. “You press a button and that button will begin to assist you when

you’re pedaling.”

E-bikes are bicycles with an integrated electric motor, which can be used for propulsion. They are an increasingly popular commuting alternative to machines such as mopeds, though their health benefits are also surprising.

A 2016 study by the University of Colorado Boulder suggests that regular e-bike usage has health benefits. According

Like any married couple they enjoy a multitude of different things, including fighting — boxing, specifically.

The two are members of Box Hiit Forma Fitness in Maitland, and although the two participate in different programs, boxing is among their favorite.

“It’s stress-relieving, and it’s a great workout,” William said.

“It’s constantly changing; every time we come in it’s never the same,” Gloria said of the classes. “There is always something new to learn.”

The Winter Park couple, who have made working out a

daily practice over the last five years, landed at Box Hiit after they were told about it by the gym’s new head trainer, Ricky Moreno, who leads many of the 50-minute classes.

For the boxing classes themselves, Moreno has them go

through a variety of drills to help develop flexibility, mobility and strength.

“The primary benefit is cardiovascular — building up the cardio-endurance,” Moreno said. “We’re trying to incorporate movements for sustain-

Mattioli, whose original store is in Madison, Wisconsin, said e-bikes are increasingly popular for certain types of rehab and sedentary adults. They are also a popular fitness selection for older individuals.

Perhaps one of the largest benefits of e-bikes is that their essential function — assisted propulsion — makes them perfect for beginners and those who are sedentary or otherwise out of shape.

“Let’s say someone hasn’t (ridden) a bike in 30 years — e-bikes are easy to get started on because, at the beginning, you can use more assist than when you get used to it,” Mattioli said.

“Mentally prepare,” William said. “Maybe come and just watch part of a class before signing to see what’s going on.

That way you can be like, ‘OK, that’s what I have to do.’”

“And bring a friend,” Gloria said. “Because I wouldn’t have gone without him, and he wouldn’t have gone without me.”

Temika Kindred, owner of Foxy Fitness Studio & Pole, never expected to own a fitness facility,

but she was led down this health path starting with a doctor’s diagnosis of high blood pressure when she was in her 30s.

“He asked, ‘Do you want to see your kids graduate high school?

You need to do some lifestyle changes.’ That gave me a sense of urgency.”

She tried everything — from joining the YMCA and Weight Watchers to following the Atkins Diet, and she found herself losing the weight, only to regain it later. After becoming tired of the

repetition on the treadmill, she began searching for a weightloss and fitness solution that was a little more exciting.

That’s when she discovered a pole-dancing studio, and once she took a class, she was hooked.

“I like pole dancing,” Kindred said. “It makes you feel amazing. It’s empowering. Its artistic.

“You can expect to sweat, for sure,” she said. “Definitely expect to push yourself in a great way, and expect to have a whole lot of fun. It’s a fun way to get your body moving.”

In the first class, participants will learn how to hold the pole and position their arms, and they will learn a few basic spins and moves. Once they have mastered a few moves, Kindred puts on the music.

“I want it to come across as a fun place for women to come as themselves,” Kindred said. “To embrace their curves and love the skin they’re in. I’m big into that.

“I tell people, don’t knock it till you try it,” Kindred said of pole dancing. “I promise you’ll have a different respect for pole athletics. … It’s almost like gymnastics but on the pole. It’s the same type of moves. People just express themselves differently.”

The studio has other fitness classes and programs, as well, including Zumba, boxing, yoga, belly dance, silks and boot camps.

“When I’m dancing, I’m always in the best shape. It’s great cardio exercise, (and) it’s great for your arms because you’re holding your arms up in your dance frame so your shoulders get really toned. It’s (also) great for your legs and your posture.”

Ballroom dancing requires connecting your brain with your body, Bergman said, and it’s also effective in allowing participants to forget what’s going on outside and focus on doing something fun.

“Especially nowadays, everyone’s kind of trying to find

their flow, the moments in your day where you’re not thinking about anything other than what you’re doing, and ballroom dancing really lends itself to that,” she said.

All Arthur Murray studios offer a free sample lesson so potential students can see the studio, meet the instructor and decide whether they’d like to continue with dance lessons.

“So many people don’t know what to expect,” Bergman said.

“The lessons gives you an idea of, ’Is it going to be as scary or uncomfortable as I think, or is it going to be really fun?’ It satisfies so many different areas of your life — social, physical and mental. Once you get bit (by the dance bug), it’s kind of hard to not get addicted.”

At UCF’s Recreation and Wellness Center, those with disabilities are given the chance to participate in the sports they love.

ome people say that, in the grand scheme of things, sports are just sports.

For others, sports are more than just putting a ball through a hoop or climbing up the side of a cliff — it’s a chance to overcome physical and mental barriers, all while achieving better health.

The UCF Recreation and Wellness Center offers a smorgasbord of programs as a part of its adaptive and inclusive recreation programs.

Most of the programs at UCF have started doing something involving adaptive recreation,

said Andrea Snead, who oversees both the sports clubs and the adaptive and inclusive programs at the university.

“We’re the largest university in the state of Florida and second largest in the country — so I know we can do this, and I have full confidence in not only our staff at the rec center, but also our ability to put on the best programming that we possibly can for our students,” Snead said of her desire to continue to grow the programs. “We want to attract more students. …

It’s something that I’m passionate about.”

That fiery passion has helped fuel Snead to work to find more ways to bring attention to the inclusive programs at UCF. That

led to the development of the Inclusive Rec Expo, which has been held annually since 2013 during Diversity Week on campus.

During the Wednesday of Diversity Week, different inclusive programs are showcased for students and faculty. In 2016, Snead had the showcase focus on the Paralympic sports like goal ball and sitting volleyball, which the university offers.

Along with those two events, the university also offers wheelchair basketball and the newly added sport of indoor tennis, among other sports.

If traditional sports aren’t someone’s forté, the university offers something a little different. Known as the Haul System,

the adaptive climbing program allows students with disabilities the ability to ascend up the rockclimbing tower located in the rec center.

“It’s a mechanism — a chair — that students will get in, and they’ll ascend the height of the tower,” Snead said. “They won’t necessarily be climbing the tower, however they will be ascending the exact height of the tower, and they will be using their own hands in ascending themselves up.”

For those looking to take in exercise that is a little less vertigoinducing, the university recently updated the boat ramp and dock at Lake Clair — making it more accessible to launch the program’s adaptable kayak.

Both the Haul System and adaptable kayak/boat ramp are forward-thinking, yet simple, ideas that allow for students to go beyond their own usual physical limitations.

Although the university offers a diverse realm of activities, if students are looking for just a good ol’ workout, they can do that with myriad speciality machines and weights at the rec center.

The adaptive and inclusive programs at UCF have helped bridge the gap between both disabled and non-disabled students on campus. And that is how it should be — because the goals in sports are the same for everyone, no matter their ability, she said.

“Sports are just sports for us,” Snead said. “Everyone feels the same way when they’re engaged and you want that team camaraderie and you want that sense of accomplishment, and that’s why a lot of folks play sports, and I don’t think people with disabilities should be left out of that.”

“We have a piece of equipment called a NuStep, (and) it has mechanisms that can go on their legs to assist with circulation — it’s kind of like a sitting recumbent bike,” Snead said. “Then we have four pieces of Cybex equipment — a chest press, an overhead press, a lat pulldown and a row. With the Cybex equipment the interesting thing about that, is that it is completely inclusive, so students with and without disabilities can use this piece of equipment.”

To help disabled students get the most out of their workouts and better learn the right way to use the machines, the adaptive and inclusive program partnered up with doctoral students enrolled in the physical therapy program.

Known as the UCF Student Assisted Workout Program, doctoral students basically act as personal trainers, encouraging their fellow students and helping to promote healthy living and independence.

“It was the first program we had that was geared toward students with disabilities,” Snead said.

“Those students come over to get themselves experience working with different populations, and

Ambivalence is the road block to healthy change

T

here are so many options for physical activity, an abundance of great weather, and you know, it’s good for you. So what is getting between you and your health goals? Why can’t you “just do it”?

Simply, it’s ambivalence.

Yes, you want to make pole dancing or running or whatever part of your weekly life.

But just as much you want to sleep longer, you want to continue to chase that illusive idea of getting caught up on

work, or you want to chill out.

Perhaps the negatives block the path to your goals. You just don’t want to go over to the gym and see all those Lycra-clads. Or your hair will get messed up, or maybe you are just too tired. The list can go on. We can’t move forward because we are ambivalent, pulling ourselves in two different directions, not ahead.

Behavior is about choices.

Ambivalence about exercise or food or just about any change is normal. But it is also an obstacle.

One way to deal with your ambivalence is to recognize and accept it. Look deeper at the pros and cons, the choices and the paths. Look at your motivations.

Are you trying to get fit because you think you are supposed to? Do you really want to invest the time? Look at the gap between what you are doing (or not doing) and what you want for the future you. How does your behavior differ from what you really want? What do you want, anyway?

We all know that physical activity and eating better are good to do and give many benefits. But you have to make it personal. Dig deep to determine what you want to be different and why.

children, a big upcoming family event, surviving after a heart attack or wanting a mate.

Look at how your current behavior is interfering with your important goals for yourself. Does your drinking interfere with relationships? Does your weight keep you from achieving professional goals? Does the cost of tobacco get in the way of your own financial goals? What is the balance of your values?

Look at the activity and find one you enjoy — one you enjoy doing more than not doing. Do it with people you like. Activity is many things, not only the gym. An attractive activity will always trump something that feels like a must-do chore and helps flip the ambivalence off switch.

When you resolve that ambivalence, you are on the path to change. It really is all about you.

Figuring out which path is interesting but not hard.

It could be running, rowing, pole dancing, Zumba or any other activity that fits your personality and you enjoy.

The true challenge is resolving your ambivalence and deciding if you really want to be on the path.

You can do it, if you really want. Jimmy Cliff told us “You can get it if you really want but you must try, try and try, try and try” — but not until you resolve what you really want.
