I-4 Ultimate project continues to affect Maitland Boulevard Although the project will be ongoing for at least another year, significant progress has been made, according to city officials.

The seemingly constant construction being done on Interstate 4, also known as the I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project, has affected quite a few communities — including Maitland.

Although the end goal is, of course, to help make the roads easier to navigate and drive, construction always gives locals headaches.

Howefer, improvements have been made and the situation is getting better, said Maitland City Manager Sharon Anselmo.

“They made changes probably about six months ago — it was quite harrowing — there were daily changes and a lot of construction going on,” Anselmo said. “At this point, I think the westbound direction has improved considerably.

“If you take it from Maitland Boulevard all the way through to Bear Lake and Apopka — you can pretty much go straight all the way through, and maybe stop at the light at Bear Lake,” she said.

“It’s a pretty amazing improvement.”

The work on westbound Maitland Boulevard is complete, Anselmo said.

ramp on the left side of westbound Maitland Boulevard that crosses underneath eastbound Maitland Boulevard; a new exit ramp to realigned Keller Road; a new ramp from Maitland Boulevard to both Keller Road and Maitland Summit Boulevard; and a new entrance ramp from Maitland Summit Boulevard to Maitland Boulevard.

Anselmo said once all the alignments and the new ramps are set, people will be able to easily cross Maitland Boulevard like never before.

“When they’re done, you’ll be able to pass underneath Maitland Boulevard — say you’re at the RDV, you can get to the Chick-fil-A on the other side,” Anselmo said. “So it definitely opens it up for pedestrians to get from one side of Maitland Boulevard to the other, under Maitland Boulevard.”

CONNECTING EAST AND WEST

Along with the ability to walk underneath Maitland Boulevard, pedestrians also will be able to actually freely walk or bike across I-4 itself with the building of a pedestrian bridge that will be connecting Lake Destiny and Wymore roads.

“We have received calls from a lot of folks who are really excited about that, because it finally connects the east and west side of Maitland in a pedestrian/ bicycle friendly way,” Anselmo said.

Pedestrians won’t be the only ones who will be able to move about the roadways more easily.

By raising Maitland Boulevard over Lake Destiny Road, Keller Road, and Maitland Summit Boulevard, the improvements means those driving down the boulevard will face fewer traffic lights.

EASTBOUND WORK

While things are going much smoother on the westbound side, the eastbound side is a different story.

With at least another year of construction still on the horizon, the eastbound lanes of Maitland Boulevard will include many of the same adjustments that the westbound lanes faced, Anselmo said.

entrance ramps on to I-4 eastbound and west bound also will be added.

The only difference between westbound and eastbound construction is that in the eastbound section Southhall Lane will be connected to Keller Road, while the Sandspur Road entrance ramp from eastbound Maitland Boulevard will be removed — new left turn lanes to Hope Road will replace the exit to Sandspur Road.

While the construction is ongoing, Anselmo said city officials keep in contact with the I-4 Ultimate team whenever they need to address anything, including complaints from residents — which generally relate to noise and changes to traffic flow.

“We pass on as much information (as possible), as well as if we get feedback — positive or negative — we will follow up with FDOT,” Anselmo said. “But on 17/92, we work with FDOT and we have had our traffic engineer out there making recommendations.

“At this point synchronizing the lights and having the appropriate signal timing is really what helps traffic move,” she said.

“There is no real way to reduce it.”

he knew once she got into the thick of the devastation, her life would never be the same.

A nurse practitioner of more than 30 years, Nancy Rudner had lived in under-resourced countries facing difficulties before, but nothing had compared to this.

The toll of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico was absolute. To this day, most of the island still doesn’t have electricity and most natives struggle to survive.

“The destruction was incredible — we saw forests where every leaf had been stripped off, every tree was down,” Rudner said. “I saw one house where the roof had blown off, and it’s mountainous there, and they could see their roof on the other mountain. And there were a lot of places where you could see a bed, because all the walls were gone.”

Before Rudner’s trip to Puerto Rico in November, she helped lend a hand at a pop-up response center at the Orlando International Airport. There, alongside Shepherd’s Hope, Rudner was able to perform medication refills to help keep those arriving from the island from having to make a trip to the emergency room.

Rudner had volunteered with Shepherd’s Hope, a faith-based organization of volunteers that help provide health care to the needy, for about 20 years and was inspired to go down to the island to help.

She, along with a small team of physicians and nurses, were sent down on short notice to help provide medical aid during a twoweek span.

“It’s kind of a blur,” Rudner said of her first day in Puerto Rico. “We held a clinic at the church. People came in and they got information about mosquitos, and they got information about water filters, and we gave out vaccines for tetanus and flu.”

ers would move about from place to place — making home visits and setting up clinics wherever they could find space.

The adventure took them through the countryside and deep into the mountains, where Rudner traversed narrow goat paths to get to those who needed aid.

They handed out medication, gave vaccines and helped treat the poor and sick as best they could. In addition to the medical care they provided, Rudner and her team also did something simple, yet incredibly effective — they listened.

“The other reason I went is because I speak fluent Spanish, and I think it’s very helpful there,” Rudner said. “You can talk to people there through an interpreter for basic stuff, but some people just came to talk to me and they were so overwhelmed and so depressed, and I would say, ‘I don’t know what I can do to help you,’ and they’d say, ‘I just needed to talk to someone.’”

Although Rudner could help provide medical care and listen to the people’s struggles, she was helpless as it related to food shortages and a crumbling infrastructure. Most grocery stores had been destroyed, and those that did have a little food saw price gouging on items — making them basically untouchable for most on the island.

The fields that had been used as farmland to grow crops had largely been mowed down by the storm, so locals couldn’t even get to fresh foods, Rudner said.

Instead, they relied on MREs, which were handed out by the government. While still sustenance, MREs are not the healthiest meals.

“They are good in a disaster, because they are food — but they are high in salt and sugar, so we saw a lot of people with really high blood-pressure and high bloodsugar levels,” Rudner said. “And there were no fresh fruits and vegetables — this is a tropical island.”

Despite the sadness that came along with seeing those struggling on the island, Rudner came back to Central Florida with a small sense of accomplishment, though she knows the job is far from done.

The want to help those in need down in Puerto Rico has become so strong that Rudner has returned to the island with another group to continue working.

“What we are going to be doing is supporting the clinics that are there — there is a pretty good healthcare system in Puerto Rico, but they are overwhelmed,” Rudner said. “So we are going to be doing home visits, which is really a wonderful way to provide care.”

The Edgewater High School community is grieving after the death of varsity football player and senior Gerald Anderson, 18, in a reported home invasion on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 4:56 p.m. about an incident along Murcott Circle off Old Winter Garden Road.

Deputies arrived on the scene and found a deceased male who was later identified as Anderson, as well as another man injured outside the home.

According to police reports, Anderson and suspect Luismil Hernandez both were attempting an armed burglary of the residence. They entered the home and encountered 70-year-old Juan Jose Caraballo, who was armed and gunfire was exchanged. The shooting left Anderson dead and Caraballo injured; Hernandez fled the scene.

Caraballo was transported to ORMC, and Hernandez was arrested Friday, Jan. 5, on a warrant for armed burglary and firstdegree felony murder.

“The Edgewater Football Family is hurting right now,” officials from the Edgewater football team wrote via Twitter. “We lost one of our own this past week and our prayers are with the family and all who were affected. Gerald, Fredo, #23, our heart hurts not knowing you are with us anymore but our hope is that we will all reunite in heaven!”

The news comes after a storybook season for the Edgewater Eagles. It was a tough stretch the year before during a winless 2016 season, during which the Eagles were outscored 463 to 93. Under new head coach Cameron Duke, the varsity squad responded by going 8-2 during the 2017 regular season and capturing the district championship. The Eagles were eliminated in the regionals semifinals.

“Everything goes back to the players,” Duke said. “It’s a credit to the players who are here, and for the guys who stayed around last year.

“I’ve been so pleased at their progress academically, and their progress about learning how to practice,” he said. “A coach only does so much — football comes back to those guys (who) are playing it.”

Grief counselors were on hand following the incident when students returned to school Jan. 8, OCPS Media Relations Manager Lorena Hitchcock said.

“They’re available throughout the week,” she said. “As long as they’re needed, the school is going to have the grief counselors available.”

One of the region’s key figures in expanding the reach of Florida Hospital is calling it a career.

Senior Executive Officer Ken Bradley of the South/West market in metro Orlando will retire Feb. 1, after 32-and-a-half years of work at Florida Hospital.

The Winter Park resident helped several key moves take place that grew the organization, including the acquisitions of hospitals in Kissimmee and Winter Park. He played a major role in the development of Florida Hospital Celebration Health and oversaw the operations of Winter Park Memorial Hospital for 16 years. It was at the Winter Park hospital that he championed several community health initiatives, including projects such as the Center for Health & Wellbeing — a 80,000-square-foot-facility under construction near Winter Park Memorial.

The center’s wellness area will include a “Nutrition Theater” where activities such as cooking demonstrations will occur, along with an outdoor garden. A Peggy & Philip B. Crosby Wellness Center will make up the fitness component, which will feature a modern fitness floor, multipurpose fitness rooms and pools.

Finally, a medical component will include sports medicine and rehabilitation, a retail pharmacy, and physician offices.

ley said what he’ll remember the most are the people.

“I think the thing that probably means the most to me are the people I’ve worked with, in some cases have coached and some cases have been part of promotions and other cases watch them do really, really great things,” Bradley said. “They did that because of their own talents and their own skills. I don’t take any personal credit, but I take personal pleasure in that.”

Despite overseeing so much as an executive, Bradley said he will look back over the past three decades and see numerous individual instances during which a life was saved in the hospital or

where a person received the care they required.

“You just know what people will do for other people and how they give of themselves,” Bradley said.

Bradley first started working for Florida Hospital in the Human Recourses Department, where he spent eight years. From there, he worked his way up to chief operating officer of Florida Hospital Kissimmee, followed by chief operating officer of Florida Hospital Celebration Health and then chief executive officer of Florida Hospital Kissimmee. He then spent 16 years as the chief executive officer of Winter Park Memorial Hospital before com-

ing into his current role.

The long tenure at the organization very much mirrored his father, Don, and his grandfather, Edgar, who both worked at Florida Hospital over several decades.

“My grandfather started working at Florida Hospital in 1922, so between my grandfather, my father and I, this will be our 95th year of continuous employment in three generations at Florida Hospital,” Bradley said. “I can’t not think about their experience as I think about my experience.”

Bradley also served as the mayor of Winter Park from 2009 to 2015 and is recognized for building a large reserve fund for the city through careful saving.

“One thing I learned, both as mayor and obviously quite a while ago as hospital executive, is you have to have a lot of help,” he said.

“There’s probably 200 patients at Celebration as we speak. I’m not at every bedside — I can’t be. …

My goal has always been as a leader to give people broad parameters and then get out of their way.”

Bradley said he isn’t sure what exactly he will pursue during his retirement. However, he plans to visit several relatives — and perhaps see a couple golf tournaments.

“I live life without any regrets, but I realize life is very short,” Bradley said. “While I think I have tried to focus on the things that are important, I want to continue to do that.

“I’ve got some visits I need to make,” he said.

It is ultimate relaxation, and that’s exactly how owner Tina Nguyen planned it to be.

“We wanted to create a different feel — something more modern, luxurious and relaxing,” Nguyen said. “We always play soft, serene music, and the pedicure/manicure area is separated.

That’s done on purpose, because we want to create a pedicure area where people can just relax and listen to the soft music. Then over at the nail bar, there is actually a television, and that is more of the area where you can talk.”

Located at 115 N. Orlando Ave. Suite 101, Bliss Beauty Bar’s name is pretty reflective of the assortment of services it offers. In addition to nail services, the business also offers up services like eyelash extensions, professional makeup, facial and body waxing. Bliss also offers its services for events such as weddings, fundraising events and private parties.

“We call it a beauty bar, because it’s a combination of different beauty services — it’s not your typical nail salon,” Nguyen said.

“It’s like a one-stop shop for all services.”

Although Nguyen opened Bliss Beauty Bar Dec. 21, the idea of opening her own beauty salon has been a longtime dream. Nguyen, who grew up and received most of her education in Orlando, is actually a practicing pharmacist who owns and operates the Millennium Specialty Pharmacy — which sits across the street from Bliss.

“Beauty has always been a passion of mine,” Nguyen said. “My hobby on the side — other than being a pharmacist — is doing makeup, so I’ve been doing freelance makeup and actually got certified a couple of years ago.”

Nguyen’s first foray into beauty business was in 2009, when she opened a nail salon in Hunter’s Creek.

Although she enjoyed some success, Nguyen had to sell the salon once her family began to grow with the addition of kids.

After a few years, Nguyen decided it was time to get back to the field she loved.

inter Park celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with gusto at the 16th annual Unity Heritage Festival Monday, Jan. 15, in Shady Park.

The annual event, put together by the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, had vendors selling food and clothing filled the streets while children played on the bounce houses.

The festival kicked off with an hourlong “Lost but Not Forgotten” presentation that included a dramatization skit, words from local religious leaders, and musical performances.

The presentation ended with a recorded speech from Martin Luther King Jr.

t was a night for far-out fashion and groovy tunes at the first Woodstock Winter Park Saturday, Jan. 13, at Mead Botanical Garden.

Despite a sudden cold front, guests arrived at the nighttime event clad in psychedelic hues and costumes to eat, drink, and listen to the Legacy band play ’60s songs in the Grove. Money raised at the function went towards the garden’s social and educational programs including summer camps.

The event, presented by the Mead Botanical Garden and Central Florida Community Arts, was initially scheduled for October but was rescheduled following Hurricane Irma. Garden board members hoped to hold more annual festivals going forward.

However, that’s not all: While you’re enjoying your evening with the pros, you’re also supporting kids in the Parramore community and helping invest in brighter futures for them.

Cue the First & Goal Gala, an event that combines an elegant evening with one of America’s biggest sports and ties the two together to raise funds for the Parramore Kidz Zone.

PARRAMORE AND PKZ

Parramore is Orlando’s highestpoverty neighborhood; in fact, at the start of the 21st century, about 73% of children and youth lived below the poverty line, according to a case study from America’s Promise Alliance.

The neighborhood’s high school, Jones, had received five consecutive Fs on its performance and held only a 66% graduation rate in the 2007-08 academic year. Additionally, the juvenile arrest rate in Parramore was 250% higher than the rate for Orlando overall, the study said.

er elected officials, convened the Parramore Task Force and outlined key areas for improvement.

Lisa Early, then the mayor’s director of children and education, worked on multiple pilot projects to find what would best reach the children and teenagers in the neighborhood. Finally, in 2006, Dyer worked with her to launch an official initiative called Parramore Kidz Zone, also known as PKZ. PKZ invests in projects such as quality early-childhood education; afterschool programs; programs that build family economic success; youth-development programs for teenagers; access to health care; mentoring; tutoring; and college-access assistance And it’s working, too. According to the city of Orlando, by 2015, program evaluators had documented a 61% decline in juvenile arrests, a 56% decline in teen pregnancies and a 38% decline in child-abuse cases in the neighborhood since PKZ started. Additionally, more than 70 PKZ youth are in college, and all of them are the first generation in their families to attend.

There is something called a Sunshine Kids Pin, which was designed in 1982 for children to have a way of expressing love to their friends. It is a yellow sun to exemplify the sun’s positive, life-giving force, bright hope for the future and warmth. In the beginning, each pin was hand-pressed, painted and baked by the children.

“It’s an organization that supports children with cancer and gives them experiences to take away from their treatment,” said Dore Baratta, a real-estate agent with BHHS Florida. “It offers experience for kids throughout the United States. For the local kids in Orlando, it has events for them throughout the year at places (such as) Legoland and Dave & Buster’s. It just immerses them in fun things for that time period.”

Specifically, Sunshine Kids adds quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with exciting, positive group activities so they can have fun and enjoy life.

Andrae Bailey, CEO at Lead Homelessness and co-host of the First & Goal Gala, first came up with the idea when the NBA AllStar game came to Orlando. Bailey remembers there were many events surrounding the hype, but none geared toward the local community.

“The event was started based on the Pro Bowl coming to Central Florida, and the idea that if it’s going to be here every year we’d love to have a local event for local leaders and folks that benefits a local charity,” Bailey said.

“Last year, we did our inaugural event at the Citrus Club the night before the Pro Bowl and had about 500 attendees and 30 current and former NFL players.”

Because both Bailey and Dyer share the same vision for alleviating homelessness and poverty, Bailey decided to ask Dyer to cohost last year’s event with him.

This year, the two will co-host it once again. They first decided on PKZ as the ongoing event beneficiary because of the impact it has on the lives of local children.

“PKZ is one of the organizations doing a lot of work in the inner city, helping those less fortunate with that hand up they need to build their future,” Bailey said. “For us, Orlando has grown into one of the most premier cities in America. We have so many blessings, if you will, and if in the midst of all the great things happening we can’t give back to those in need while celebrating our success, what does it mean?

Having PKZ benefit from an event like the Pro Bowl coming to town, it’s a no-brainer.”

The football-inspired gala is hosted at the Citrus Club in downtown Orlando and is an upscale party event with music, food, drinks, a silent auction and about 40 current and former NFL players — six of whom are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame — in attendance.

“You’ll get to come and have amazing food and hang out with some of the coolest people in Central Florida, but also rub shoulders with and get autographs from some of the greatest NFL players of all time,” Bailey said.

Last year, the gala raised about $25,000 for PKZ, and Bailey hopes to raise more this year.

“It’s not just about the game — it’s about how the community supports the game with all the other activities before and after,” he said. “The idea that this event is locally based, helps a local charity and adds to our attempt to having the most amazing Pro Bowl weekend the NFL has ever seen, it’s just very cool to be someone who has the opportunity to be a a part of it.”

Rollins College Professor Emeritus Jack Lane will discuss Rollins College Centennial History: A Story of Perseverance (1885-1985), a book that tells the inspiring story of Rollins’ history – from its beginnings as a little college on a sparsely settled Florida frontier to its heralded status today.

It’s cold backstage in the Linda Chapin Theater, but that’s fine.

Ballet dancer Sasha De Sola has to warm up anyway.

Between a towering hallway of dark curtains just feet away from stage right, De Sola practices her craft while wearing a black tutu with elegant gold trim.

She hops in place for a moment before stretching her joints. Feet wrapped in silk extend straight out, carrying her entire body weight on her toes. She flexes her feet up and down in a crisscross pattern – her heels kissing the ground for just a second at a time.

The routine almost resembles the pregame warmup of a professional athlete, and that’s not far from the reality of being a worldrenowned ballet dancer, De Sola said. It could even be an understatement.

“We’re trained to make it look easy,” she said.

“I would train six hours a day from the age of 11 on. … It’s difficult on the body.”

Later that day she would be performing in front of 2,600 people.

But this isn’t just any audience – it’s her hometown crowd.

It’s been four years, but she’s finally come home.

De Sola showcased her ballet skills alongside partner Max Cauthorn on Saturday, June 24 at the World Ballet Competition’s Gala Performance, performing “Black Swan pas de deux” from “Swan Lake” at the Orange County Convention Center.

The 27-year-old knows the Linda Chapin Theater and its backstage well – she grew up performing numerous ballet dances there. She was born in Winter Park Memorial Hospital and grew up not far away in Winter Springs.

But Central Florida isn’t just her home, it’s where she discovered her passion for dance.

Flying into Orlando from where she currently lives in San Francisco, the memories came flooding back for De Sola.

“It felt sort of surreal,” she said.

“Just even getting on 417, it’s very nostalgic. It’s a really good feeling to be back.”

rlando Science Center sponsors and donors turned out for the official opening of the new Flight Lab exhibit Friday, Jan. 12. The opening, held on the first day of the annual Orlando Science Center tech expo Otronicon, featured a ribbon-cutting attended by members of the Office of Naval Research and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

After testing the flight lab’s simulations, guests headed down to the first floor for the Otronicon VIP reception, where they ate food, sipped wine and mingled. A squadron of stormtroopers, Jedi and Ewoks arrived later to take photos with the crowd.

A full life Rudy Rodrigues, a Winter Park resident, finished a book detailing 10 years as a U.N. worker in Afghanistan.

Rudy Rodrigues has had a lifetime of stories.

He’s served under Kenyan kings. He’s spent months of his life in bombed-out buildings in the Middle East. He’s been a team leader for the U.N., supplying aid to people in need. He’s dealt with the Mujahideen and has broken bread with the Taliban.

“I’ve been around the world,” Rodrigues said. “If you take all the continents I’ve been to, it’s easier asking what country I’ve not been to.”

After decades of adventure, he’s finally put some of those stories to paper. Rudy, a Winter Park resident, is the author of “Here Vultures Fly”, a recently published novel detailing his decade spent in Afghanistan.

AROUND THE WORLD

Rudy’s country-hopping tendencies started early; he was born in Kenya and enrolled in school in Britain. In 1958, he joined the Royal Military Academy Sanhurst, where he became an officer and eventually, a major.

“I eventually moved to Canada,” Rodrigues said. “I had $3,000 in my pocket, a wife and three kids.”

He ended up creating a security company in Alberta with about 30 employees before starting a road transportation operation in Sudan

during a famine, where he delivered food to the hungry.

Eventually, he found himself in Western Afghanistan as a U.N. team leader.

“The conditions (living there) were really miserable; there was so much fighting going on,” Rudy said. “We were eating dinner by candlelight, and a tank shell came and blew out a total wall of the building, and this was in the middle of winter.”

As a team leader, Rudy worked with the Taliban, militia groups and the local government to supply food to citizens. The groups he worked with didn’t matter as much to him as the people he helped.

“We (the U.N.) were impartial,” Rudy said. “The suffering was universal, the suffering of the people in Taliban- or Mujahideencontrolled areas was the same.

The people didn’t care; they just wanted to be safe and get on with their lives.”

He’s proudest of his work establishing supply lines and a mobile blood bank in Herat hospitals to save the lives of children wounded by land mines.

The book itself has been a long time coming – the manuscript was actually started while he was living in Afghanistan.

“I’d written the book (years ago) and left it in my study,” Rodrigues said. “My son finds it and says, ‘What the hell is this doing here?’”

“I wanted to get it off my chest, it was bubbling within me,” Rodrigues said. “I just wanted to let go, and I felt so relieved when I did.

HERE TO STAY

After a second stint in Afghanistan in the 2000s, Rodrigues began looking for a new home. He was considering retiring to the Philippines or Malaysia, but his soon-tobe married son, Marc Rodrigues, had a different idea in mind.

“He says to me, ‘Listen Pops, I need some moral support; this girl has her entire family here (in Winter Park) and I’ve got no one,’” Rudy Rodrigues said.

He made the move to Winter Park to be closer to his son, but it took some time getting used to the new conditions.

“In the U.N., you’ve got power, prestige, privilege,” Rudy Rodrigues said. “And all of a sudden, I had none of that. I was trau-

matized in a way. I’m thinking, ‘What am I, what am I doing?’”

It was a culture shift for Marc Rodrigues, a procurement director at Siemens, as well. When his father was in Afghanistan, he and his two siblings spent that decade living with their mother in Canada.

Marc Rodrigues remembers making calls to his father on satellite phones that were too expensive to use for more than 30 seconds at a time.

“That was just the reality of it,” he said. “My dad was doing what he needed to do to support us; it was just the sacrifice he had to make.”

It was different, seeing his father every day.

“He’s not exactly a person that likes leisure, (my wife and I) were wondering how he would feel about Winter Park,” Marc Rodrigues said.

“But from the moment he got here, he really ended up enjoying it.”

Even in retirement, Rudy Rodrigues has been busy. He sits as the head of his condo association, makes it to Sunday Mass more often than not and volunteers at local charities when he can. He enjoys taking walks and hitting the sauna, though not as much as he likes visiting his grandchildren.

“I would have never expected that my grandchildren would bring me such joy,” Rudy Rodrigues said.

“I was very grateful to my son and two daughters for accepting me back into the fold. It wasn’t easy for them growing up without a father.

I realize that.”

It’s a quieter life, but Rudy Rodrigues still watches out for people where he can.

“He still takes my clothes and does my dry cleaning, every single week,” Marc Rodrigues said.

“It’s that generosity that always impresses me.”

The game of hockey is gaining popularity in Central Florida with the help of the RDV Sportsplex.

‘More than hockey’ In addition to hockey skills such as skating and shooting, students of all ages learn life skills on the ice at Maitland’s RDV Sportsplex.

eady to lace ‘em up and be the next Wayne Gretzky?

Some may think you have to live up north to play a game of hockey, but the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den in Maitland has everything you need to start scoring goals or making glove saves.

A new year means a new season of hockey-related classes and leagues at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den, with something for everyone ages 3 to adult.

It all starts with the facility’s Learn to Skate program, which starts for children at age 3. Students learn how to skate forward and backward and how to stop.

Once someone has the basics, he or she is transitioned into the Learn to Play program, which teaches the game’s basic fundamentals, including stick-handling, passing and shooting.

But there’s also six free Try Ice Hockey events where children ages 4 to 12 can get on the ice with skates, sticks, gloves and helmets

“It’s a great way to introduce kids and families to the sport,” Director of Operations Debby Kwasman said. “As a mom, you want to make sure they’re committed to doing it before you invest in the equipment.

LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN

Players are able to take the skills they’ve learned and apply them in a scrimmage situation with the Youth Rookie League, a developmental league for players 10-andunder through 18-and-under with less than two years of house league experience.

“That became our bridge program between our Learn to Play and our House League program,” Hockey Manager Doug Wemple said. “The kids will go into the Youth Rookie League, and when the coaches feel they’re ready, then they advance into our House League program.”

The RDV Sportsplex offers leagues for players ages 8 through 18. Players get to be a part of a fun and competitive atmosphere, with weekday practices and weekend games with USA Hockey certified coaches and referees.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

For players looking to hone their skills outside of league setting, there’s plenty of options, Wemple said.

Skate and Shoots for youth and adults give players a chance to practice fundamentals in an open, free play setting. There are clinics for power skating and other skills as well at varied times throughout the year, and private lessons are also available upon request for skaters and goalies.

When the summer comes, that’s when the camps start up, Wemple said. The facility hosts both an RDV Sportsplex Ice Den Hockey Camp and an Orlando Solar Bears Hockey Camp, where players ages 4 to 18 get to learn from professional players and coaches.

Adult players who are new to the game can either attend the Learn to Skate program or they can join a public skating session and learn on their own.

There’s a Learn to Play for adults as well, who then can transition into adult house leagues. The levels of skill range from the Rookie league for all new players that are learning the game all the way to the WAHL league for former pro, junior and college players.

A league for players age 35 and older is available as well, and last January RDV started an all-girls program with a 12-and-under team and a 15-and-under team.

“We were the first facility in the history of hockey in Florida to have two all-girls teams playing in our in-house program,” Wemple said.

“I think over the next couple seasons here we’ll see that we have a 10U all-girls team as well. ” GROWTH SPURT

Wemple arrived at RDV in May 2014, relocating from Grand Rapids, Michigan. When Wemple first arrived, the facility had about 250 kids in the leagues on an annual basis. That number has since grown to more than 600 kids in 2017.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth over the last three years,” Wemple said. “My motto, I guess if you will, that I brought here has always been, ‘It’s more than just hockey.’

For me, we’re not just focusing on making kids better hockey players, we’re focused on what we do here on making them better individuals in society. … Parents have told me over and over again that they love the culture that we have here that we’ve instilled, making sure these kids are learning to be respectful of one another and behave well.

They’re learning important life skills, more than they’re learning to stick-handle a puck.”

Wemple also credited some of the recent growth in participation to the Orlando Solar Bears ECHL hockey team, which returned to the Orlando area in 2012 after the IHL folded in 2001.

“I get lots of people who give me phone calls and emails that say, ‘Hey, I took my child to a Solar Bears game — they have no idea how to skate, but they want to play hockey,’” Wemple said. “They’ve definitely helped bring that awareness back to the area for the game.”

Kwasman, who has been with RDV since it opened about 20 years ago, said she’s seen the game of hockey grow in the area as well.

The participation has increased over time, but there are still players that have played every weekend since the facility first opened its doors.

It’s like a family, Kwasman said, and it’s only continuing to grow.

“It’s been exciting to watch the evolution of it,” she said.
