Lake Highland Preparatory School teamed up with UCF’s Go Baby Go! — a program that designs low-tech and affordable solutions for toddlers with disabilities to gain independence — to fundraise and modify ride-on toy cars for local children with mobility impairments.

More than 90 volunteers — including Lake Highland Prep and UCF students — modified five toy cars for local toddlers, who were on-site with their families to receive the cars at the event.

The old theater — which sat at the southwest corner of Fairbanks and Chase avenues before it was torn down last year — was built in 1926 and formerly served as Winter Park Baptist Church.

“I’ve been at Rollins for four years now, and from the time stepped foot on campus, I’ve been receiving missives from theater students and their parents and alumni about the Fred Stone Theater and its decrepit state,” Rollins College President Grant Cornwell said. “This project is going to be for us to replace the black box theater, which is the experimental theater where our students produce and direct and perform their works, and also a new dance studio.

“Rollins’ undergraduate theater program is ranked in the top 25 in the nation and actually the top undergraduate theater program in Florida,” he said. “We’re proud of that, and we’re going to take this opportunity to build a facility that really lifts up theater.”

The footprint of the new building is larger than the previous theater and involves closing the existing Chase Avenue to vehicular traffic and redeveloping it as a pedestrian path leading from Fairbanks Avenue into the campus.

That might be for the best, Planning Manager Jeff Briggs said, because getting on and off of the road from Fairbanks Avenue can be unsafe.

“Getting into Chase or making a left out is a scary maneuver at

many times of the day, so in the interest of traffic safety, they’re turning Chase into a pedestrian corridor so access will be around through the regular Holt entrance,” Briggs said. “That should be a very big plus in terms of traffic safety.”

QUIET ZONES COMING SOON

City Manager Randy Knight told the City Commission that Winter Park should have quiet zones in place by the end of the summer — putting an end to train operators laying on the horn as they go through railroad crossings.

Mayor Steve Leary added that pre-work already has been taking place at the various crossings in the city.

“We are ahead of the game,” Leary said. “A lot of the work has already been done, so it should be a pretty quick integration.”

Winter Park entered an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation to establish quiet zones at all 16 of its railroad crossings. According to the FDOT Rail Handbook, a “quiet zone” is defined as “a section of a rail line at least a half-mile in length that contains one or more public crossings at which locomotive horns are not routinely sounded.”

The plan calls for upgraded safety measures to be put into place, so train engineers no longer will have to blow their horns unless there is a dangerous situation.

The quiet zones come after numerous residents have complained about the train horns blaring at late hours of the night near residential areas.

CANOPY PROJECT STILL IN DESIGN PHASE

Knight said city staff still is working with the design team to bring the library/event center project within its $30 million budget.

Once that happens, the design will be brought before the commission with some alternate opportunities they can choose to fund or for which they can seek fundraising.

The fundraising team has been asked by Knight to provide an estimate of how much they can reasonably raise and already have raised by April 1. That effort to acquire funds would help pay for add/alternates such as a rooftop venue on the event center, a raked auditorium in the library and a lakeside amphitheater.

Leary made it clear the project has been on budget, aside from legal fees the city was forced to pay in 2016 in a legal battle over the location of the project.

“Regardless of some reports from a few individuals, the only increased expense to taxpayers on this project so far has been the lawsuit brought against the taxpayers and the voters of the city by a small group,” Leary said. “Any additional monies that had to be spent to move this forward as of today have been not due to overages, because we’re still working through the budget.”

Maitland City Council appointed new board members, pushed forward a split-duplex ordinance and discussed a name for the new downtown park at the first meeting of the year on Monday, Jan. 14.

Three students from Dommerich Elementary School’s new Storytelling Troupe are headed to a state storytelling festival.

here’s an art to storytelling, and it’s not always the easiest thing to learn.

At Dommerich Elementary School, though, a handful of students are learning the best way to deliver stories — and some have even been recognized at the state level.

Dommerich Media Specialist Marcy Aydt and 12 students recently formed a storytelling troupe. Members memorize and perform stories for other students on campus.

The students, who range from third to fifth grade, recently submitted five- to seven-minute story presentations to the K-12 Youthful Voices storytelling competition. Three students from the group were chosen as winners.

Jonah Bloom, Tilly Raij and Aristides Bakamitsos will be telling their stories at the Florida Storytelling Festival Jan. 26 in Mount Dora.

Although Aydt helped her students on which books or stories they could learn for their presentation — Dommerich parents have praised her ability to find literature that perfectly matched the children’s personalities — she said the final production is all from the students.

“I’ll be at the festival and I’ll be clapping the loudest,” Aydt said.

Third-grader Jonah Bloom had a few choices for his presentation but landed on “Doodle Flute” by Daniel Pinkwater, a story about a new instrument appropriately called the Doodle Flute.

“I liked how the people who own the Doodle Flute act — they’re calm and chill,” Bloom said. “I think the story is very creative, and that’s why I picked it.”

It was one thing to memorize the story and quite another to make the characters come alive, he said. The 9-year-old spent quite a bit of time figuring out how to exactly make the doodle flute noises, in particular. He said he had to go inside the characters’ shoes and actually become the characters.

Aydt said the book is all about being a nonconformist and thinking for yourself — something that fits Bloom perfectly.

The finalist said he is grateful to Aydt and his parents for the tips and advice that helped him advance to the festival.

TILLY RAIJ

Tilly Raij had something of a head start when picking her story “The Snow in Chelm.” It was one of her favorite tales at her synagogue.

The Jewish folktale is centered on an Eastern European village of well-intentioned but foolish people trying to solve problems on Hanukkah through increasingly silly means. Raij said she likes it because of her Jewish heritage, its snowy setting and humor.

“The characters are older people, but they’re really dumb — that’s the funny part,” she said.

“They’re doing it wrong, one day at a time.”

Raij first memorized her story and then created the different voices for each of her characters.

Her mother Emily Raij said she has a knack for performing the story in a deadpan way that still

brings out the humor.

Tilly Raij was shocked when she learned she would be a competition finalist — her mother was just proud.

“She really did put a lot of effort into this with practicing,“ Emily Raij said. “We were also proud, because it was a good lesson in showing that your hard work can pay off. But I’m proud personally because it’s not something I could do. I’m not great at performing. … I was proud she could feel confident and get really into it.”

ARISTIDES BAKAMITSOS

Aristides Bakamitsos’ aunt Nancy read him Greek myths before bed when he was young.

He decided he’d pick one of his favorites.

Bakamitsos chose “The Tangled Web of Arachne” by author Heather Alexander. The Greek myth tells the story of when the boastful weaver Arachne challenges the goddess Athena to a weaving competition. Arachne is punished for her pride and transformed into the world’s first spider.

The fifth-grader has spent weeks practicing his performance in front of friends and family. He worked hard on the Arachne myth with his twin sister, Evgenia, who also submitted a story to the competition. He is set to perform his story in front of a few hundred people at the end of the month, but that doesn’t bother him — he already has had practice performing with the school’s drama club.

“My mom really helped me too,” Bakamitsos said. “I practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced.”

Former councilwoman Joy Goff-Marcil and current Councilman Mike Thomas’ seats are in contest this election. n The council amended the city’s athletic facility policy to issue licenses to athletic groups with the highest percentage of Maitland residents rather than the prior finite threshold of 55%. LAKES ADVISORY BOARD APPOINTMENTS

The council appointed one Maitland citizen to the Lakes Advisory Board and reappointed another.

The terms for board member Heidi Barry and vice-chair Kathleen McIver expired Jan. 3. Barry did not wish to seek a new term, so the council looked at applicants Chris Rowley and Scott Thomas to replace her.

The council ultimately nominated Rowley, a newcomer to Maitland who previously served as the president of a homeowners association for a lake community in Austin, Texas.

“He’s always lived on a lake or lived near lakes,” Councilwoman Bev Reponen said. “It’s a real asset when someone on the (lakes board) understands and sees what’s happening and can guide other people in the community to include decisions to make our lakes safe.”

DOWNTOWN PARK NAME

Council discussed possible names for the city’s planned downtown park.

Councilman John Lowndes was interested in some of Florida’s earlier history when choosing a title — specifically the state’s history fighting against the 13 independent colonies during the Revolutionary War. “(Maitland) has a long history of patriotism and goodwill that goes into that,” Lowndes said. “At the same time, I think we miss an opportunity to explore Florida’s actual history. ‘Independence Lane Park’ kind of implies Florida is part of this great independence movement that was started in the 13 colonies. … The history of Florida is actually that Floridians fought alongside the British crown against the 13 colonies. It’s an interesting and true fact about Florida.”

Although council members joked about Lownde’s possible redcoat sympathies, one resident appreciated his knowledge of Florida’s history.

The council approved moving the name decision to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

The council introduced an ordinance allowing duplexes to be split into two fee simple residences within sections of the city.

A split duplex would require a city attorney-approved declaration of covenants and restrictions that would need to run with the land; designate common areas such as driveways; maintenance and repairs of the common walls and exteriors; and more. Winter Park, Orange County and Seminole County already allow duplex splits, according to city staff.

Both the Planning and Zoning board and Development Review Committee recommended approval of the ordinance. City staff also recommended counci to move the modified ordinance forward.

A concern for council members, which the Planning and Zoning board had highlighted when debating the matter in December, was the possibility of a propertyowner stalemate in the case of damages to both units. City staff included a payment mechanism for shared maintenance that would involve an insurance company in case of a disagreement.

A split duplex’s covenant agreement, which would settle disputes, would have to be first reviewed by the city attorney Cliff Shepard.

Council members were wary the

city could become too involved in an argument between private citizens.

“There’s a reason why cities all over this state have stopped reviewing covenants,” Shepard said. “I’d be reticent to do more than review something else provided to make sure the city’s issues are covered. Anything else is beyond where we should be getting ourselves involved.”

The council was ultimately satisfied with the existing provisions and safeguards in the covenant agreement and introduced the ordinance unanimously.

A public hearing and action date has been set for the Jan. 28 meeting.

here’s something special in the works in the resident woodshop at Westminster Winter Park.

Furniture is repaired and brought back to its original state. Wooden sculptures are carved meticulously with chisels.

It’s a place where ideas are crafted, skills are shaped and old, forgotten treasures are made to look like new.

The woodshop in the Winter Park retirement community always has a project in the works.

JUST LIKE NEW

Ralph Bowdish, 74, has worked with wood most of his life. It started back when he was about 13 years old in the mid to late 1950s.

“I enjoyed it — I did well with it,” Bowdish said.

However, instead of pursuing the woodworking, Bowdish enrolled in college — only to find out it wasn’t for him.

“After a year and a half, they told me I probably shouldn’t be there,” he said, laughing.

Bowdish went back to working with his hands. He became an apprentice to a tool and die maker — where he could create something once again and visualize that final product in his mind’s eye. In 1964, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a deep-sea diver for more than 20 years. But when Bowdish wasn’t underwater, he was working in the woodshop on the ships.

“I just like making things,” Bowdish said.

After finishing his time with the Navy, Bowdish started a rigging house company, which he ran for almost 20 years until his retirement.

When choosing a place to live with his wife, Judy, three-and-ahalf years ago, Bowdish knew he wanted to keep busy. That’s when he discovered the woodshop at Westminster Winter Park.

“We visited (Westminster), and it had the best shop, and it had more of everything we wanted,” Bowdish said.

THE WOODWORKERS

Today, Bowdish serves as the president of the Woodworkers, the group of residents certified to use the equipment in the woodshop.

The group was founded in 2007 and today consists of about 17 members. About seven members of the group are especially active and come to the woodshop frequently to create or complete a repair project.

Safety is a priority, Bowdish said. Members are allowed to use pieces of equipment in the woodshop once they become certified through an interview process — also demonstrating and discussing the use of the device in front of a seasoned member, he said.

On Tuesdays though, the woodshop opens its doors for any Westminster resident to bring in something that needs fixing, such as a water damaged antique rosewood table one resident brought in recently.

Bowdish and members of the Woodworkers removed some of the moisture underneath the finish by using heat, filled a crack that had started to appear, rubbed it and smoothed it down without getting into the veneer, and cleaned and waxed the table.

“That’s very gratifying,” Bowdish said. “I like old stuff — anything I can do to improve it without changing it.”

Another project was the tiger maple table that was covered in stains. The members disassembled the table, scraped off the old finish, sanded the pieces down and re-stained the table. Today it looks good as new, Bowdish said.

The efforts of the Woodworkers can be seen throughout Westminster — from the repairs in people’s shoes to the mailbox that sits in the lobby.

It fills Bowdish with a great satisfaction to use the skills he has learned over the years, he said.

“It’s relaxing, and it makes me feel good,” he said. “I got another project I just started the other day.

It gives you a purpose, and everybody needs a purpose of one kind or the other. I’m glad to be able to help people. I enjoy it.”

had an upgrade, an initiative to provide sun shading over parts of the school is halfway to completion, the baseball fields have been reworked, and the auditorium is receiving a new sound system.

It’s a sizable number of projects, but the foundation has the budget to match.

“We typically run about a $450,000-a-year budget,” said Vince Furey, director of charitable giving and the past president of the Winter Park High School Foundation. “We’ve raised about $1.3 million in the last three-and-a-half or four years. With that type of fundraising, there’s a lot of things we can affect at the school.”

Although Furey has spent time as head of the nonprofit, he now deals with the foundation’s large donors, fellow nonprofit organizations and donor families. He also oversees the various projects put into place to improve the high

school each year.

“Over the last five years, the foundation has gotten real momentum and a solid structure,” he said. “Winter Park High School has an incredible legacy, and people have very close ties to the high school and want to see it continue to improve.”

MADE IN THE SHADE

After a full year of fundraising, the foundation is finally spending about $130,000 to install sun shading over the school’s pool area and outdoor cafeteria space.

“Between the aquatics program, the high-school swimming and water polo team, the Blue Dolphin club team and the Central Florida Sun water polo team, the Stone Crab club — they all train out of Winter Park High School,” Furey said. “That pool deck was getting a lot of use year-round, and there was no shade at all.”

WOODEN WILDLIFE

John Demopoulos, 88, remembers the day he first saw the woodshop at Westminster. He was getting a tour of the facility and saw the shop through a window — the lights shut off and the equipment collecting dust.

But it didn’t have to stay that way, Demopoulos said.

Fast-forward about 12 years, and that window is no lined with Demopoulos’ wooden sculptures— a collection of fish swimming together, mallard and more.

The woodshop is now active and alive — thanks to the efforts of Demopoulos and resident Henry Spang, who cleaned up the shop in 2007 and placed several tools that Spang inherited from his father.

“Between the two of us, we started to put the shop back in shape,” Demopoulos said. “It had been used previously, but it’d lain fallow for probably four or five year. Once we got it going, a couple of the older guys showed up and expressed an interest in being able to use the shop.”

Demopoulos, Spang and a group of residents started the Woodworkers group, which has met once a month ever since.

“We just do all kinds of things — it’s a wonderful thing for those of us that are interested in that,” Demopoulos said.

As pieces of equipment and tools made their way into the woodshop through donation, Demopoulos happened upon what would be become one of his greatest hobbies.

“When I moved in here, I was looking for activities to pass my

time — I had no previous carving experience other than whittling when I was a youngster,” he said. “When the shop got set up, I found all of these carving tools and chisels and some very nice carving knives and thought, ‘Gee, why don’t I try carving?’”

Since then, Demopoulos has carved numerous creations — with most of them taking the shape of wildlife he sees in photographs or creates in drawings. At least a dozen or so carvings sit on display in his home at the retirement community, but he has given away about twice that many.

“You’re producing something and you wind up with a result that’s permanent that you can enjoy seeing,” he said.

Demopoulos hadn’t given art a try until he arrived at Westminster.

The career insurance salesman for 45 years now sells pieces of art occasionally to residents and visitors at the retirement community.

“I suppose I have a knack for it — I haven’t had any particular training,” Demopoulos said.

Every year for almost a decade, Demopoulos carves something for his granddaughter, Lesley, as a birthday gift. He’s made her birds in the past, but most recently, he undertook a project to carve the image of Artemis, the Greek goddess of wild animals and the wilderness. The figure wielding her bow and arrow to protect the animals represents his granddaughter’s latest interest in veterinary medicine, Demopoulos said.

The carver at Westminster said he is grateful for the woodshop and all of the activities the retirement community gives its residents.

“It’s a great place to live,” Demopoulos said.

leaving only the outdoor cafeteria needing work.

Furey said the school’s older campus simply can’t hold all the students in the cafeteria, leading around 100 to 200 students eating outdoors each lunch period.

Although there are tables with umbrellas to keep students cool, there soon will be 80 feet by 80 feet of shade covering two-thirds of the outdoor cafeteria.

TENNIS COURTS

The foundation stays in close contact with Principal Matthew Arnold to find parts of the school most in need of improvement.

Furey and Arnold didn’t need to look hard to find a part of the school that needed work. The school’s tennis court complex has been in a state of significant disrepair, with two of the courts deemed unplayable.

The courts now have a new surface, replaced nets, dust screens and more. Furey said it’s one of

the quicker projects the foundation has tackled, with work starting in October 2017 and completed in January 2018. A donor almost funded the initiative completely.

OTHERS DEVELOPMENTS

The foundation also completed a $55,000 project to replace the performing-arts auditorium’s performance lighting from canned lighting to modern LED lighting in October. About $140,000 was spent to update the school’s weight room, and $70,000 was put toward redesigning the athletic center’s locker rooms.

Furey said the pool area also is receiving a new sound system.

The foundation’s major 2019 project will be to update the school’s media center. The center, which serves as a meeting space for several groups and clubs, has 1970s and 1980s furniture that isn’t compatible with the school’s more modern, technology-focused aesthetic, according to Furey.

Rollins College invites the community to its weeklong celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The health-conscious expo will feature a variety of vendors. The chamber hopes to make it an annual event.

Over 50 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream - and Rollins College is keeping that dream alive.

Jan. 21 will mark the beginning of MLK Week at Rollins College, an annual tradition during which Rollins staff, students, and the greater Orlando community gather to celebrate King and his legacy.

Destinee Lott, associate director at the Center for Inclusion & Campus Involvement at Rollins College, believes much has changed in the years since King’s fight for civil rights but that there is still progress to be made.

“These conversations still need to happen, and conversations will always need to happen,” Lott said.

“It’s easy to think, ‘We don’t need to talk about social justice,’ or, ‘Our country is fine,’ but it’s OK to acknowledge that there’s always room to grow.”

To promote conscientiousness and awareness for social justice, this year’s event is themed “Stay Woke.” The five-day event will have art discussions, a keynote presentation from a criminal reform activist, and even a discussion on the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Highlighting Dr. King’s legacy and what he really stood for is an opportunity to come together and reflect on the current state of the country and have some really critical conversations,” Lott said.

ARTIST TALK WITH JASON LAZARUS AT CORNELL FINE ARTS MUSEUM

The week’s artistic offering will be the “Artist Talk with Jason Lazarus” on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

The event, presented by the Rollins College Department of Art and Art History and Cornell Fine Arts Museum, will showcase Lazarus’ work and have a conversation between the artist and students.

Membership and Guest Relations Coordinator Dina Mack said that the talk originally was scheduled to take place last October, but Lazarus’ focus on social justice and equality in his art made it a good fit for MLK week.

Lazarus currently is working on the “Too Hard to Keep” archive project, a collection of photographs and digital files from artists who consider them “too hard to keep, but too meaningful to destroy.”

BEYOND THE HASHTAG: THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT

On Thursday, Jan. 24, Rollins College and its Black Student Union will host an open discussion to help people further understand the movement as it stands in 2019.

The “Beyond the Hashtag: The Black Lives Matter Movement” will examine how the movement has progressed and its meaning moving forward. Attendees will have the chance to hear anonymous questions about the movement’s history and goals and learn something new. Rollins staff is working to bring a community member involved with the movement to the discussion group.

“It’s a place to ask questions and go a little deeper about the Black Lives Matter Movement,” Lott said. “In the last couple of years, things have seemed to taper off on a national level, but I think there seems to be a lot more conversation around community policing and what it means to be a police officer in today’s times and what it means to protect everyone.”

MLK DAY OF SERVICE

Rollins College will end MLK week with its traditional day of service, during which 15 to 20 Rollins students and staff will head to Tangelo Park Elementary School for a beautification project. The team will clean classrooms, organize paperwork, and perform other acts of kindness that will help the teachers have a better 2019.

Making a New Years resolution to stay healthy and fit is always a good goal. But as anyone knows, it can be hard to stick to it. It also can even be hard to figure out where to begin.

The Maitland Area Chamber of Commerce is looking to help with its annual Health and Wellness Expo Wednesday, Feb. 6. The event, held at the Maitland Civic Center’s Venue on the Lake, aims to connect the Maitland public with local health care professionals; teach them about health care initiatives; inform them of possible careers; and allow them to sample healthy foods from local vendors. The expo’s vendors and sponsors will be speaking to the crowd throughout the evening.

“We wanted to connect our local business owners and healthy community with the people who live here,” said Kevin Stewart, chamber marketing director.

“There’s a lot of money and technology in health. … The idea was to create an annual event where the people who live in this town can get used to connecting with local health care professionals and recognize it when it comes around every year.”

This year’s expo currently has more than 15 health and food vendors, though Stewart expects more to register later in the month. Stewart thought up the idea in late 2017 and had it approved by the chamber board shortly after.

He believes people are comfortable driving long distances to find the health care they need.

What he doesn’t believe, though, is that they should have to.

“Maitland Avenue is full of doctor’s offices,” he said. “You can drive a mile and lose count of the doctor’s offices you just passed. It’s about bringing value to the community and keeping the money in Maitland. … People don’t know all of the doctors we have here.”

the team learned a few lessons from that initial attempt. This year’s iteration will take place throughout the venue — the first attempt was only on the west side and felt crowded.

“One of the biggest things I learned (at the first expo) was to have a more health-oriented menu,” Stewart said. “I made the mistake of having unhealthy items, and I got kicked pretty hard for that.”

He believes this year will be different. Inside Out Natural Foods & Paleo Meals, one of the vendors that already has registered, will have an assortment of healthy and paleo-based foods for guests.

Stewart expects between 200 and 400 visitors. Attendees who register for the event online ahead of time are placed in a cash drawing.

Playing a sport in college is the dream for many high-school student-athletes, and an event last week helped make that dream a potential reality for girls on the soccer field across the state.

High-school girls playing soccer had the chance to make an impression and show off their skills at the Winter Park High School Girls Soccer Showcase Friday, Jan. 11, and Saturday, Jan. 12, at Showalter Field and Ward Park.

Coaches from at least 22 colleges, including University of Central Florida, Rollins College, South Georgia State College, University of North Florida and Andrew College, were present to evaluate the athletes.

Winter Park girls soccer assistant coach Troy Dennis said. “(Angeles) wanted to have a format for high-school players to get college exposure,” Dennis said.

“We have many high-school players (who) play club soccer. That’s a very common thing in Winter Park and common at Bishop Moore, and there is a lot of opportunities for strictly club players to play in front of college coaches. That opportunity doesn’t always expand to girls that purely play high-school ball.

This gives an opportunity for both our club players and girls that just play high school to get that exposure.”

Winter Park Wildcats have gone on to play college soccer because of the showcase. Among them is Huntingdon College sophomore Camryn Hale, who turned some heads the first year of the event.

Other Wildcats on the current roster have committed to colleges as well, including senior Ellie Moreno (University of Central Florida), senior Ansley Frazier (University of Massachusetts), senior Alex Granville (University of Texas at San Antonio) and junior Karina Groff (University of Massachusetts).

Some players in the showcase, such as Winter Park seniors Lindsey Dolle and Sarah Dennis, don’t plan on playing soccer in college, and the event is just another way to create special memories alongside teammates.

“This team’s just had a big impact on our high-school life in general, because you get to meet people through high-school soccer,” Dolle said.

“We play a lot more different teams,” Hatton said. “Normally we’re stuck with the same teams every year, and it’s good to branch out. There’s a lot of opportunities. I know last night there were a bunch of college coaches standing around, so it’s a little pressure, but it’s a good pressure.”

Several Bishop Moore girls already have committed to playing at the next level, including five of the team’s seven seniors.

Bishop Moore girls soccer head coach Amy Geltz said she was excited to see that number potentially grow with the help of the Winter Park High School event.

“It’s a great showcase,” she said.

“All of these teams from all over the area have come in, even from Tallahassee to Lakeland to here around town. It’s just a good way for all these girls to be seen.”

An Elite Clubs National League showcase also took place during the same week, which gave the younger players a chance to stand out and show their skills at Winter Park, Geltz said.

“It’s gratifying — especially for the ones that might not be starters right then and there — to be able to step up and play their best out here when others are not here,” she said.

This marked the third year for the Winter Park High School Girls Soccer Showcase — a gathering of high school talent that was put together by Winter Park girls soccer head coach Jimmy Angeles. It originally started with about six or eight teams before growing up to 12 this year. It provides a unique opportunity, because most showcases are only through club teams,

Winter Park families and art enthusiasts checked out the school’s many arts workshops that included torch-cutting, blacksmithing, photograms, painting and more. Featured artists Janvier and Gustaf Miller were also present to promote their “Hand in Hand: The Creative works of Janvier Miller and Gustaf Miller” exhibit at the school’s opening reception.

Keri Anne DeMott Foundation’s third annual banquet

I

t was a mix of laughter, tears and celebration Saturday, Jan. 12, during The Keri Anne DeMott Foundation’s third annual dinner banquet at the University of Central Florida.

DeMott, a UCF student, was killed by a wrong-way drunken driver in October 2015. The foundation her family created seeks to raise awareness of the effects of drunken driving, educate students and young adults about the consequences, and help other victims of DUI accidents. The DeMott family presented awards during the banquet to people who have had a hand in supporting the foundation and furthering DUI awareness.
