As Americans gear up to remember and honor Civil Rights Movement leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 21, some West Orange municipalities have some celebrations of their own planned.

Both the cities of Ocoee and Winter Garden will host their annual MLK Day parades and uni-

ty festivities, and students from Oakland Avenue Charter School have been working hard to put into words who King was and how his contributions continue to have an impact in today’s society.

Perhaps the biggest announcement of the evening was confirmation of a new Lower School campus.

Buckles first announced school staff was looking to open another elementary campus during the 2017 State of the Academy address, and gears are moving quickly to make that dream a reality.

“Due to the continual population growth in our area and our Lower School campus being full on a regular basis, we have begun this work, which eventually will house kindergarten through sixth grade,” Buckles said.

“There are some practical obstacles we are actively and faithfully working on. We have some county issues and permitting that must be tended to, (but) with that said our goal is to open this location August of 2019.”

UPPER SCHOOL EXPANSION

Foundation is working on plans to build a new road around the Upper School campus.

“Moving us forward into the future, we are quite literally building a road to that future — a road that will go around our property and will exit out to Mann Road,” Buckles said. “We will add more paved parking. This road is required because of a building addition that we will need to build in the next two years.”

With the population growth in the Winter Garden and Horizon West areas, as well as increasing interest in Foundation Academy, the new buildings coming soon to the Upper School campus will create more space for students to learn and engage.

The main building in the works will have eight classrooms, two science labs and a band and drama room. Additionally, Buckles said, staff has begun the preliminary designs on the fine-arts and cafeteria buildings. This will be completed in two phases. The cafeteria will seat up to 400 students at any given time, and the state-of-theart fine-arts building will seat 1,500 people.

Landeavor primed to continue Oakland Park development The real-estate development and investment company purchased the residential community last fall and is committed to resuming construction.

Landeavor purchased Oakland Park from Crescent Communities last September, and Division Manager Paul Luck said he and his team have been tackling a list of issues ever since.

Luck gave an update to the Oakland Town Commission Jan. 8. He said he has been meeting with

residents in the community, has worked with town staff, is involved in the homeowners association and has begun sending weekly newsletters to residents.

He said he plans to deliver more buildable lots this summer, and folks can expect to see completed homes at the start of 2020.

Mayor Kathy Stark requested Luck hold several public meetings for residents — especially

those living in east Oakland near the anticipated construction — so he can update them on the agreements the town had with Crescent Communities and to assure them these agreements will remain between the town and Landeavor.

Those public meetings will be announced at a later date.

The 258-acre Oakland Park is the first community of its kind, with properties in both Winter Garden and Oakland. It has nearly a mile of lakefront property, has onsite access to the West Orange Trail and is a certified green development.

IN OTHER NEWS n Public Works Director Mike Parker and Town Manager Steve Koontz provided a legislative update and solicited approval to move forward with a $2 million request to the Florida Legislature to extend the wastewater system to Motomassek Road and Railroad Avenue. This phase will complete the main east-west “spine” through the town.

Since 2013, the town has obtained $2.35 million in state legislative appropriations to extend the wastewater infrastructure through the town.

The current phase will bring the infrastructure along the West Sadler Avenue right-of-way up to Tubb Street.

Head of School Carol Grosshans began by summarizing some of Foundation’s biggest highlights from the last year, as curated by a survey completed by its families.

Academically, the Lower School’s standardized Terra Nova test scores continue to be above national average, while the Upper School’s SAT scores continue to increase in the last four years, she said. Through dual-enrollment partnership with Grand Canyon University and Southeastern University, 25% of the 2019 graduating class has the potential to move on to college with the equivalent of six to 20 college-level classes.

For the first time in Foundation’s history, there are two AP Scholars with Distinction.

Additionally, senior Jonathan Richardson has become the school’s first National Merit Scholar semifinalist.

She also highlighted the fine-arts department, which has a handful of students heading to state competition in the categories of musical solo, costume design and group pantomime.

For athletics, Foundation played on its own home field for the first time this season, and the varsity football team made it to regional finals. The school also recently added competitive tennis and middle-school competitive cheer, and staff is researching and considering adding boys and girls weightlifting, swim and lacrosse.

Other recent additions are the new playgrounds at the Lower School campus, new science labs and upgraded security measures — such as the implementation of more security guards at both campuses.

n The Town Commission approved the first amendment to the Oakland Commercial Center Development Agreement between the town and RaceTrac Petroleum Inc., which is building a RaceTrac service station at the southwest corner of West Colonial Drive and Remington Road. At buildout, the 16-acre parcel will include six structures on six lots.

Part of the amendment allows the applicant to revert to the original proposed subdivision layout, which already is in place. According to Town Planner Jay Marder’s report, “This avoids the expense of tearing out existing street, drainage, utility and other related infrastructure that is in place.”

on the First Baptist Church of Windermere’s Lakeside campus, will be in addition to the existing Lower School campus in downtown Winter Garden. This additional location will bring FA’s total to three campuses. Pending permitting and working with Orange County, Buckles said the goal is to open the new campus for the 201920 school year.

FA already partners with First Baptist Church of Winter Garden to house the existing Lower School campus, and now both entities will work with FBC Windermere to promote Christian education, Buckles said.

“Our hope is that in opening the Lakeside campus, we will see students and families come to know the love of Christ,” Buckles said.

FA students and staff hosted the school’s annual State of the Academy addressThursday, Jan. 10, at its Tilden Road campus. Hundreds of parents and their children attended and listened as school administrators highlighted the past year’s accomplishments and looked forward to the future at Foundation.

Accompanying the evening’s theme of “The Power of One,” administrators shared statistics and stories of the academy’s successes, student accomplishments and plans to further improve the school’s Christian-education experience. From academics and athletics to faith, family involvement and fine arts, school staff said Foundation is in good shape and poised for growth.

hen Dustin Alexander and his wife, Jessica, were searching for the perfect name for their new church, they had to look only as far as the Bible and the 15th chapter of the Gospel of Luke.

The parables of the lost sheep, lost coin and lost son spoke to the Alexanders, who were wanting to build a church where the lost could find their way to Jesus Christ.

Found Life Church will open its doors to the Winter Garden community for its first service at 10:30 a.m. on Launch Sunday, Jan. 27.

“When we sat down and asked what kind of church did God want us to plant, it was that aspect of finding a place of home,” Alexander said. “That passage (about the Prodigal Son) jumped out at me.

Even though he’s made mistakes, he’s lost his way, there’s still a home for him.”

His desire is to make this new church a place for people to find hope and to find life and then go out and share God’s message with others.

Alexander served as executive pastor at Sanctuary Church, in Orlando, for nine years prior to starting Found Life. He, his wife and their two children moved in September to Oakland.

He said he and his church team inherited the property from Garden Cathedral Church of God when the Rev. Ray and Barbara Minger retired last April. Found Life is partnering with Church of God and the Association of Related Churches, which provides training and mentoring for church planters.

For the past eight months, the new church team has been renovating the building, which is more than 20 years old and had some physical challenges. The church now has a new roof and air-conditioning unit, as well as updated bathrooms, sound system, lights and Wi-Fi — all of which was paid for with fundraising dollars.

“It was all raised through other churches, financial support, business support, friends who are investing in myself, my wife and what we’re doing in the church and want to see something happen here in Winter Garden,” Alexander said.

The pastor said his goal is “creating a culture, not just a church” — not simply a building where

WINTER GARDEN UNITY CELEBRATION

For the 11th year, the city of Winter Garden invites the community to celebrate the leader of the Civil Rights Movement with its Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Celebration.

To be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, the celebration kicks off with a parade, which travels west on Plant Street through downtown Winter Garden and ends at the pavilion.

From 10:30 a.m. on, a festival complete with vendors, speakers, children’s activities and live entertainment will ensue.

OACS MLK CELEBRATION CONTEST

For the past few years, fifth-graders at Oakland Avenue Charter School have been encouraged to

people gather once a week.

“It’s far more powerful to create a culture where those beliefs are in the people and they carry them with them,” he said. “They go outside the church. We have seven culture statements who we want to be, not just who we want to be when we come together on Sundays, but when we are at work or our children’s ballgames. … We want to live out what we believe to people in a practical way.

“It takes the church outside of any physical location … and I believe it’s more impactful when people not of faith see you living it out,” Alexander said. “I think that can have a greater impact on the world.”

His purpose is to point people to Jesus Christ, he said.

“I can’t do that within the walls,” he said. “We teach it here, and we live it there.”

Alexander hopes to reach people who seek a relationship with God, people who might not feel at home in a traditional church and folks who want to serve their community.

He wants to create a pantry and an outreach center in one of the buildings on the church property.

Even before the church officially was started, teams were holding a backpack drive for a local school and hosting a fall festival.

In the past, students have participated in a similar essay-writing contest to describe who King was and why his activism continues to

At launch, the church will offer a Sunday morning service and a simultaneous children’s service.

By summer, Alexander expects to start a variety of outreach groups and small groups for people wanting to read scriptures and experience life together.

“But we also want to have places for people who are interested in different things, maybe share a scripture and maybe go on a motorcycle ride or go out fishing,” he said. “Not everyone feels comfortable coming into a church on Sunday morning. That’s why it’s so important to create a culture.

That allows our church to be anywhere. That allows our influence to extend beyond the walls.”

The church is forming service teams, such as worship, hospitality and outreach, and Dream Team submission forms are available on the website, foundlifechurch.com.

“We want to be who we say we are, and not just on Sunday but throughout the week,” Alexander said.

However, the owners declined the letter because of interest in the property from professional golf course companies, the update stated.

Since then, HOA board members have held multiple meetings and calls with the owners to request that the course continue to be maintained and allow it to perform a comprehensive review of the property. They also requested to meet with potential buyers, and two board members reviewed the last three years of golf course financials under a non-disclosure agreement, the update stated.

Board members also have met with multiple golf-course management companies and investors and are gathering data on the costs to operate the course, club and restaurant.

“In summary, the SBW Board of Directors is continuing due diligence necessary including working with potential buyers and gathering necessary information related to buying the course for the HOA,” the update stated.

The 18-hole, par-72 public Arthur Hills-designed golf course opened in 2000.

In 2017, the course ranked No. 18 on Golf Advisor’s list of Most Improved U.S. Golf Courses. The Stoney-brook West community is a gated community with 1,450 homes, many built with views of the golf course.

According to Orange County property records, Stoneybrook West Golf Club LLC purchased the golf course for $2,399,400 in April 2010 from Kitson and Partners Orlando Golf LLC. The Orange County Property Appraiser reports the club’s 2018 market value as $2,745,620.

Stoneybrook West Golf Club’s closure comes less than three years after Bryan DeCunha, owner of the Windermere Country Club, closed that community’s golf course. DeCunha has sought to gain county approval to convert the golf-course property into residences. However, the community’s residents have opposed that proposal. Orange County holds the development rights of the property and in March 2018 upheld a decision to retain those rights. That golf course remains closed.

Although the decline in golf has resulted in course closures throughout the state, property owners at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort in Fernandina Beach celebrated a victory last month, when a Nassau County circuit court judge ordered the resort owner to repair and reopen the shuttered Ocean Links Golf Course by October. The decision also prohibits the owner from using the property for anything but a golf course.

Representatives from the Stoneybrook West HOA and Stoneybrook West Golf Club LLC did not respond to multiple attempts seeking comment for this story.

After calling the Orlando area near Florida Mall home for many years, Johnson-Laux Construction is returning to its Winter Garden roots.

The construction-management firm specializes in the health care, aviation, government, commercial, retail, hospitality, education and industrialmanufacturing industries. From job-order and general contracting to construction management, the company has the capabilities to undertake a range of services, including both renovations and brand-new construction.

Now, the company is gearing up for a big move as it relocates its headquarters to a 20,000-squarefoot building in Winter Garden.

“We founded the company in 2000, and our very first office was in Winter Garden,” Vice President Kevin Johnson said. “As we outgrew those small offices in Winter Garden, we moved closer to Orlando and have been there ever since. A couple of years ago, I wanted to get back to the west side of town, so we found this property and purchased it, started design and permitting, and now we’re under construction.” “(It’s good), time-wise, for our staff and ease of getting to the highway,” said Tony Ashmore, a Johnson-Laux project manager.

“This lends to that, plus it’s back to the root of our development of Johnson-Laux. It’s exciting to be back there.”

Johnson said the company began with mostly health care and government construction, but as it grew, the staff ventured into new construction and renovation in the hospitality, education and aviation industries, among others. In February, it will begin its first grocery-store renovation project for Aldi.

“I’ve lived on that side of town since 1999,” Johnson said. “It’s a great location in the sense of the great proximity to the Turnpike, (State Road) 429 and East-West Expressway.”

Construction on the company’s new headquarters is underway, and Johnson and Ashmore hope to move in by late April. Although it is a 20,000-square-foot building, Johnson said the company will only utilize between 8,000 and 10,000 square feet. The other portion will be leased out to a tenant or two.

“We love to see the traffic; we love to see the growth,” Johnson said. “We’ve always loved Winter Garden. We want to be a part of it. Winter Garden is worth the investment to purchase and own our building and continue our growth.”

The next time you need to renew your tags or replace your driver’s license, you’ll probably head over to the West Oaks Mall.

The mall is home to the newest Orange County Tax Collector office, which combines and replaces both the Pine Hills/West Colonial and Winter Garden locations. At about 36,000 square feet — including the office’s call center — it is now the largest tax-collector office in the state.

“Those two offices (West Colonial and Winter Garden) were pretty old, with old technology and designs, and we were looking for a place where we could combine these two offices,” said Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph. “This pretty much fell right in the middle of those two locations. What we’ve tried to do with other past office moves is get them close to major highways. This is close to the 408, 429, the Turnpike, and all of that can be reached very quickly. It was the perfect location for that.”

Located on the southeast side of the mall in the original Old Navy space between Dillard’s and the AMC movie theater, the new office not only creates more physical space but also opens up capacity for more personnel. Randolph said both locations were at capacity in terms of personnel, and this location will have 50% more space for the call center. Additionally, 20 jobs are being added.

“I’ve wanted to do this the last couple of years, because my goal was to centralize our operation around major thoroughfares and make it easier for customers to be closer to an office,” Randolph said.

The West Colonial office closed Tuesday, Jan. 8, and the Winter Garden office will follow suit Thursday, Feb. 7.

The West Colonial office never had the capacity to offer driving tests, so Randolph and his staff are looking forward to offering customers a closer location to take driving tests. Additionally, they hope wait times can be reduced between the increased capacity and SmartPass scheduling system.

“Another great feature is the ability to get in line from home and also the text-messaging services,” Randolph said. “You can then come in, check in and get your number and enjoy yourself in the mall for a little while and wait for your number to be called.”

The mask-making workshop is being held to complement the Winter Garden Art Association’s upcoming gala event in February.

Although the workshop is limited to six people, the WGAA will add another workshop before the gala if the Jan. 20 workshop fills up, said Philip Self, executive director of the art association.

“Our fifth … gala is Friday, Feb. 15, and has a masquerade theme,” Self said. “We thought the workshop would be a perfect complement to that important annual gala here in Winter Garden, (because) it gives our artists and attendees a chance to make their own mask for the event and also learn a skill that has a lot of potential creative forms and expressions.”

Worbla is a brand of nontoxic, thermoplastic material that, once heated, can be molded into a nearly endless variety shapes and designs.

The Peaches sold their cleaning company last year. In addition to the cleaning company, they also owned a number of MAACO Collision Repair & Auto Painting shops. At one point, they owned about 20 different MAACO locations throughout the country.

They ran their MAACO businesses — while simultaneously running the cleaning company — for about 10 years. They sold off most of their MAACO locations but still own and operate one MAACO location in Orlando, Peach said.

Peach’s success in business came after long years of hard work.

“I’m just a high-school graduate,” Peach said. “College is good, I think, and people should go if they could go. I just never had the opportunity to go. I kind of learned everything from hard knocks, basically. You can learn anything you want to learn if you set your mind to it.”

A few years ago, Carmine Warren wanted to figure out a way to take his photography to a new level. The portrait and fashion photographer wanted his photos to be unique, and he was able to do so with the help of his niece.

One evening, she showed him a few YouTube videos that introduced him to what would become a new artistic medium that would take his photography to a new level: Worbla thermoplastic material.

“One of the things about my photography many years ago is my work was looking like everybody else’s,” Warren said. “I’m at my brother-in-law’s house one night four or five years ago, and my niece pulls me aside and says, ‘I gotta show you something.’ … They pull up YouTube and they pull up these Worbla videos. I (was) absolutely fascinated by this.”

That night, Warren watched hours’ worth of Worbla videos on YouTube with his niece and family members. Soon, he began crafting with Worbla himself and started making items to use in his photography.

“The next day, I ordered everything you could possibly imagine (for Worbla),” he said. “I ordered three or four sheets of Worbla, I ordered a heat gun, I order silicone mats — everything you needed.”

Today, Warren considers himself both a photographer and Worbla artist. He will be teaching how to create masks using Worbla in a workshop at the SoBo Art Gallery, 127 S. Boyd St., in Winter Garden.

The workshop takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20. Cost of attendance is $120 for Winter Garden Art Association members and $130 for non-mem-

Locals gathered Jan. 3 for the grand-opening celebration of 1000 Degrees Pizza at 13599 W. Colonial Drive. Winter Garden’s newest restaurant specializes in serving personalized, buildyour-own Neapolitan pizzas that have been fired up to a crisp in a 1,000-degree brick oven. Customers can choose from a variety of toppings, sauces and styles.

“It’s fast-casual pizza place,” said owner Matthew Peach.

“You go through the line, you pick the toppings you want, and the sauce you want and then they build it to your liking. Then they put it in the oven and it (cooks for) about 75 seconds, and the pizza is done.”

Although customers have the option to build their own pizzas, they also can choose from a menu of signature creations.

The Winter Garden 1000 Degrees Pizza is Peach’s second franchise location. He opened his first in Oviedo and decided to open the Winter Garden location after seeing the first’s success.

“A lot of people heard about the Oviedo (1000 Degrees Pizza) … and wished they had one over here, so that’s why we opened it (in Winter Garden),” Peach said.

Opening 1000 Degrees Pizza isn’t Peach’s first experience running a business. Peach’s story of becoming a self-made entrepreneur starts with humble beginnings. About 28 years ago, Peach, 53, was working as a custodian sweeping up the streets of Walt Disney World. He eventually opened his own event-cleaning company, Extreme Clean, that he and his wife, Caroline, ran for about 15 years, he said.

“We … cleaned (up after) all the NASCAR races throughout the country,” Peach said, adding that his company expanded to include cleaning up after other events. “We cleaned a lot of sta-

Before he was cast for the role of Miss Tracy Mills in the Garden Theatre’s production of “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” Simon Coulthard didn’t have much experience walking in high heels, wearing a bra or donning a dress.

But now, he can add all that to his theater résumé.

“I’ve never, ever in my life played a drag queen,” Coulthard said. “The makeup, I’m just going to say, takes forever. … It’s about two hours, and I’m hoping I can get it down.”

The Garden Theatre will be presenting “The Legend of Georgia McBride” from Jan. 18 to Feb. 3.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m.

Tickets range from $30 to $40 depending on seating, and discounts are available for students, seniors, military service members and groups.

“I think there are a lot of heartwarming messages (in the play),” Coulthard said. “It’s a comedy and it’s very, very funny, but it’s got heart to it.”

“The Legend of Georgia McBride” tells the tale of a young man named Casey who loses his job as an Elvis impersonator at a rundown bar. The bar owner replaces Casey’s Elvis act with Miss Tracy Mills’ drag act to bring in more business. With a pregnant wife and bills to pay, Casey must adapt to stay in the act.

being a different person, and you can totally hide within that character. … It’s not about sexuality in the show — it’s not at all.”

Fredy Ruiz is dual-cast for the roles of Rexy and Jason. Rexy is another one of the drag queens in the show, and the character of Jason is Casey’s best friend. As a longtime fan of the show “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Ruiz is familiar with the art of drag.

“When I get to lip-sync in the show, it’s like living my best 'RuPaul’s-Drag-Race' life — mostly because I don’t do drag,” he said, laughing. “It’s really cool to get into this role of Rexy, who is such a complex drag queen. … It’s cool to transform into these fierce drag queens.”

The other role Ruiz plays, Jason, can be thought of as a “typical guy” and the complete opposite of Rexy, Ruiz said.

“Not only do I play Rexy, who is a drag queen, but I (also) play Casey’s best friend Jason, who is a heterosexual (man) from the Panhandle of Florida with three kids,” he said.

“If he is not the polar opposite of Rexy, I don’t know what is.”

Coulthard said the roles of Rexy and Jason are intentionally written in the script as a dual-cast role and shows that someone “can be a drag queen and a straight man.”

“I wanted to play Rexy/Jason, because I saw the character descriptions for both and I was like, ‘Holy moly, this is stupid challenging to play a heterosexual man' … and then to turn around and (play a drag queen),’” Ruiz said. “Jason is … open, and there’s zero judgment, which is what I think the world needs to be like.”

Andrea Hickman White, age 76, passed into the eternal grace of God surrounded by her family and loved ones on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019.

Andrea is survived by her husband, Ernest Kenneth White; daughter, Dr. Kathryn White Austin; brother, E. Cameron Hickman and sister-in-law, Kathy Kirbo Hickman; along with her grandchildren, Caitlin Lee Snelson, Matthew Cameron Austin and Ryan Sutherland Austin. She leaves behind a loving extended family of step-grandchildren, Ashley (Rick) Lombardo and their children, Jillian and Michaele; Alyse (Brad) Simons and their children, Beckham and Brooks; and Michaelene Austin (Colin Emerson) and their children, Benjamin and Amelia.

She is also grieved as family by Yulia Doctchennikov, Dmtiry Karpov and Elizabeth Karpov, as well as a wide host of family and friends from various aspects of her richly blessed life.

Andrea was born in Jesup, Georgia, on June 7, 1942, to Ann Cameron Hickman and James W. Hickman. Her family settled in Lakeland, Georgia, in 1947.

She graduated from Valdosta State College (now Valdosta State University) with a degree in education and began her teaching career in the nearby town of Homerville, Georgia.

She married her husband of

over 56 years on March 16, 1963, and they welcomed one child, an only daughter, into their lives in October 1964; and the three were inseparable until her final breath.

Andrea was a devoted teacher of English language, literature and composition. After the family moved to Jacksonville, in 1968, she taught at Robert E. Lee High School. She completed her master’s degree in education at the University of North Florida as a charter member of the program.

After the death of her parents in 1975, she and her brother took over the family business as Star Route Mail Contractors with the U.S. Postal Service. For the next 36 years, she ran Hickman and White Inc. (Florida operation), which became Phoenix Transport Inc. in 1990.

Andrea was an avid genealogist, former treasurer of the Central Florida Genealogical Society and a co-founder of the Scottish-American Society of Central Florida and the Central Florida Scottish Highland Games. After retirement, she devoted her time and energy to the service of the United Meth-

odist Church in various positions of leadership, including Church Council and Sunday school superintendent.

Andrea loved her church and loved the ringing of the tower bells, which need to be restored.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church of Winter Garden toward this project at 125 N. Lakeview Ave., Winter Garden, FL 34787.

A Celebration of Life was held Friday, Jan. 11, and condolences may be sent to Ken and the family at 995 Tildenville School Road, Winter Garden, FL 34787.

Gladys Irene Bennett, beloved daughter of Jasper Newton and Naomi Woodley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, in Lake Jackson, Texas. She was 99 years old. Her husband of 59 years, Alexander Hamilton Steven Bennett, preceded her in death in 2002.

Gladys was born in Leoma, Tennessee, on July 17, 1919. Her parents and nine brothers and sisters soon moved to Winter Garden, Florida, where she graduated from Lakeview High School.

Gladys and Alex met in church, which was so appropriate, as they both loved God. They were married on May 1, 1943, in Winter Garden. Gladys was the beloved mother of two sons.

She followed her husband to retirement in the U.S. Air Force and raised her sons throughout

West Orange High School will host the 10th annual Warriors Skills & Drills Softball Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2.

The comeback kid

Keeping and maintaining athletic programs is a difficult task — especially at small, private schools such as Central Florida Christian Academy.

It further is complicated once you get outside of the realm of the bigger sports, such as football, boys basketball and baseball.

The annoying reality is one that often plagues athletic departments, and it’s the reason why CFCA lost their girls basketball program two years ago, Athletic Director Kyle Wills said.

Despite that reality, girls basketball returned to CFCA this year, and it’s something that Wills is excited to have back.

“It’s huge — we want other girls programs to take off and have some girls compete and change their own mindsets and be competitive in things,” Wills said. “It changes the culture of the school when you have competition across the board.”

With a drive to bring back the program, Wills tapped Ashley Minor — a Natchez, Mississippi native — to take the helm and develop the girls on the team.

A self-described “country girl,” Minor, 24, grew up with a love for the game of basketball. That led her to playing at the junior-college level and at the Division II level at Mississippi College.

After graduating, she returned to Natchez, where she worked at a gift shop for a year before she got a phone call from Wills asking if she would be interested in coaching girls basketball and teaching P.E. Before she knew it, she was SEE EAGLES PAGE 14

s Bailey Trinder traversed the concrete walkways at Foundation Academy, his electric wheelchair whirred with power.

His daily stroll from class to class required stops every now and then as he was met with fist bumps and hugs from fellow students happy to see him back.

It had been five months since a car accident left him paralyzed, and it was the first time in a long while he was able to attend classes with his friends.

The anticipation of this moment — of

being back in school — was so immense for Trinder that his nerves almost got the best of him.

“It was really nerve-wracking — I remember that whole weekend I was like, ‘I’m not really feeling this, I don’t want to do this,’” Trinder said. “‘I mean, I want to go back and see everybody, and see all the teachers and just get back to normal, but I don’t want to cause a scene — I don’t want to be the center of attention.’”

Leading up to Trinder’s return Monday, Jan. 7, the junior battled his nerves.

But he wasn’t alone.

Why did you start playing basketball?

My height, for one thing. Everyone always said, “Oh you’re so tall, you should play basketball,” so I gave it a shot in sixth grade, and I’ve been playing since. It’s fun, and it’s motivation for me to get a scholarship in basketball, which I did.

Who is your funniest teammate?

It depends on the day. Our point guard Mo (Morgan Beacham) — she’s the one who gets us hype on game day. She’s dancing, going around and stuff. She’s fun.

How are you preparing to go from high school to college basketball?

I’m just trying to stay in the gym and stay focused on my grades, because I know it’s not over yet.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I listen to rap or hip-hop. My favorite artist is Kodak Black, I really like Kodak Black.

What’s your favorite class?

I would say my art class, because it’s where I can be creative. Math is always fun, too, when you’re getting it right.

Have you watched anything good on Netflix recently?

I just finished watching “Bird Box.” Everyone’s talking about that, and that was a good movie.

That was the last movie I watched on Netflix.

making the 13-hour drive from west Mississippi to Orlando to take her first coaching job.

“To be 24 and a head coach, it is surreal,” Minor said. “Some days I still wake up and say, ‘Oh my God, I’m in Orlando, and I’m a head girls-basketball coach. I had a little nerves coming in at the beginning, but it has been so much fun with these girls.”

Coming into a program that had not been active in a few years has provided plenty of challenges, and it’s doubly difficult when you take into account that none of her 11 players are upperclassmen.

The young faces on the CFCA squad consist of nine freshmen and two sophomores — many of whom have never played basketball. In fact, of the 11, only

five had ever played any level of basketball.

“It’s my job to keep these girls encouraged, and it’s challenging to get them to know, ‘Hey, this is your first year of playing basketball, this is what it looks like — you’re not bad,’” Minor said. “We started from the bottom teaching them layups.”

Looking at the team’s record, given the circumstances, doesn’t do justice for what she and the girls at CFCA are doing.

Any first-year coach taking on a revived program is going to have growing pains and difficulties, but there are positives.

There is less pressure to live up to the expectations of a previous coach and less stress to reach certain levels of success.

“As a first-year coach, it’s good, because I get to develop a team how I think is the best way

for them to perform,” Minor said. “I don’t get a lot of, ‘Oh we did this last year, our coach was like this last year.’ I get to teach them brand-new drills and just start from the ground up.”

Building those foundations already has begun to pay off for her team, including leaders such as freshmen guard Marissa Stiff and power forward Dallas Armstrong.

Although building a winning team is any one coach’s dream, Minor and those at the school are focusing on other important aspects, such as growing a stable program and the game of basketball itself.

“I just want to see them perform and get better at their skills … to see where they’ve come from since October is mind-blowing,” Minor said.

For his parents, Brian and Betsy, it was almost like their son was starting school for the first time.

“It was pretty exciting for us, because we are trying to get back to some sense of normalcy, but it was funny, because we referred to it as, ‘Here is our junior, and it’s like the first day of kindergarten all over again,’” Brian said. “It was really hard for me and my wife.”

The uncertainty and anxiety that came with the first week back to school ended up melting away as Trinder found himself back in his routine. In fact, the normalcy hit during the first class Monday morning.

“Once I actually got in — got into class — and saw some friends and I realized I was OK, it was a normal school day,” Trinder said. “I really overexaggerated. I was like, ‘I’m not going to fit through the hallway, I’m nervous I’m going to hit somebody.’

“Someone opened the door for me, and I went out and there was a clear path — everyone just kind of shook my hand,” he said.

“I was like, ‘OK, this isn’t bad.’”

The road back to school started months ago, said Foundation Academy Principal Lisa Bacon. Although the school, his teammates and the Foun-

dation community as a whole were rocked by Trinder’s accident, they all knew — even when there were doubts early on — he would eventually make it back to them. And when he came back, things needed to be perfectly in place.

While still at Orlando Regional Medical Center, Bacon and Tim Covey, the school’s director of guidance and college placement, sat with Trinder in his room to figure things out.

“Our goal, and his goal, is that he is going to graduate on time — so how do we accomplish that?” Bacon said. “He really picked up the ball and ran with it in the sense of jumping in and deciding, ‘I’m determined to do this, I’m going to get my academics underway.’”

Following that decision, Trinder jumped into his studies, while Bacon and the school made things easier for him wherever they could.

Over the next several months, Trinder worked on schooling from home. In the meantime, the school looked at preparing for his return to class, especially as it related to equipment.

“Trying to figure out how to best order desks that are suitable for him that are nonintrusive — I didn’t want him to go into a classroom and feel different,” Bacon said.

Although things will be dif-

ferent in some ways, having everything now in place for Trinder allows for a bit more of a normal a routine for him.

It’s a welcome change for him and his family. But for the teammate who inspired a community with a simple hashtag of “Bailey Strong,” there’s one place he’s ready to get back to: the sidelines of the football field, where he’ll be assisting with the offensive line.

“I found a spot where I could see my (offensive) line,” said Trinder, who was able to see his team play this past season.

“I could see what everyone was doing, and I was like, ‘OK, I see this kid’s opponent is a little faster than him,’ so I would pull him to the side and be like, ‘Take a quick step back.’ I think it was a huge benefit to have that perspective.”

Although there’s a bit of time left before he will be able to enjoy some fresh air out on the sidelines, there is one thing Trinder has taken in that means the world to him — his school.

“I didn’t even realize how much support I had from them (the school),” Trinder said. “I remember all my friends coming, all the students, the volleyball team and the football team.

It was just huge on how much support I actually have from my school.”

everal local schools took to the mat on Wednesday, Jan. 9, to participate in the District Duels at West Orange High School.

West Orange, Olympia, Windermere and Dr. Phillips were among the teams that competed in the duel, which included Evans, Edgewater and Wekiva.

The duel was a chance for local schools in District 3 to see how they stack up against one another as the end of the regular season quickly approaches.
