You know a traffic intersection is particularly dangerous when locals nickname it “the intersection of death.”

That’s the reputation that precedes the three-way intersection conjoining Ficquette Road, Reams Road and Summerlake Park Boulevard.

“I live about three miles from there and travel that road at least

once a week,” said Kevin Root, a victim of a traffic accident four years ago, near the intersection of Tiny and Tilden roads, that required more than 40 surgeries and years of rehab. “That intersection is awful. There’s no light there. It’s got a goofy turn. It’s just too small, too outdated, and there’s no easy way to navigate it. There have been several issues there.

Adaptive reuse unfeasible CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

ervation Board and Tree Board, has made several pleas during public workshops and council meetings regarding the former school complex’s importance.

“Much of the town’s history happened there,” SchretzmannMyers said. “Almost all of our elders from World War I and World War II, from 1916 until the third school was built in Windermere — Windermere Elementary — went to school there.”

However, the town has plans to tear down the building and use the original site as the new home for a municipal complex that would become the new home for the town’s police department, administration offices and Public Works Department. The oneroom 1887 schoolhouse would not be touched.

The town’s years-long initiative has led to several public workshops and studies. Town staff now has two conceptual design options for what the complex would look like and what kind of amenities it would include.

The estimated price of both options ranges between $5.1 and $5.2 million. However, the town charter imposes borrowing limits. So, in March, Windermere residents will be asked to vote on whether to allow the town manager to borrow the required money to fund the next phase of the project.

But Schretzmann-Myers has long advocated against tearing down the complex to make way for the town’s new facilities. She believes a better option would be to adaptively reuse the structure and harden the building with

materials, such as heart pine and KEVLAR fabric.

“We would be recycling and restoring the 19th-century heart pine that the building is made out of, if we chose to go this direction” Schretzmann-Myers said. “I understand the police department is concerned about safety issues, and they want a building that’s hurricane-proof and bullet-proof and an overall hardened building, but you can do that with historic buildings.”

Schretzmann-Myers added she understands the building needs to be brought up to modern building standards and suggested using hurricane clips. She emphasized several cities have gone the route of adaptive reuse, listing St. Augustine, Gainesville and Winter Garden as examples.

“I just see this as a better direction to go, which would be less of a burden on the taxpayers,” she said.

“We’re talking about two facilities costing $5.1 million or $5.2 million that would need to be funded by the taxpayers of Windermere. This is more economical and more feasible, and it’s also sustainable and preserves our history.”

Although town leadership and staff understand the complex’s history, they have not made any indication that they plan to budge.

Why? It’s simply not practical, Windermere Town Manager Robert Smith said. Smith said town staff has explored the option.

However, adaptive reuse turned out to be more complicated and costly than starting from scratch.

“The design principles that people generally use in office buildings really does not allow for adaptive reuse of these particular

buildings,” Smith said. “She talks about KEVLAR-wrapped buildings, and the White House, and stuff like that, but any contractor or designer who takes a look will tell you that adaptive reuse would cost a lot more than what we’re planning on spending.”

But it’s mainly the orientation and square footage of the schoolhouse and surrounding buildings that would make adaptive reuse unfeasible, Smith said.

“The size, shape and square footage and the orientation of those buildings do not work for government facilities,” he said.

“They were made for a schoolhouse. Adaptive reuse would not work with this particular plan, because of the width of the police department, the area that they require, the area that we would need for parking, and so on. And I’ve already talked to all the people that she’s referenced for grants, and the only adaptive reuse projects that they could assist us with would be for the porch, so that it could match what the old schoolhouse looked like.”

Smith also said adaptive reuse would cost more, contradicting what Schretzmann-Myers suggests. Neither Smith or Schretzmann-Myers were able to provide a rough estimate of how much adaptive reuse of the school complex would cost.

“Every contractor or architect we’ve spoken to has said it would cost more to go with adaptive reuse,” Smith said. “Based on our facility needs ... it’s a lot easier to just start from scratch. It just doesn’t make financial or logistical sense to do the adaptive reuse.”

thing before it becomes a bigger problem.”

But a solution, albeit much delayed, is on the way. Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey said traffic engineers are working on roadway improvements to increase the safety of the ill-reputed area.

“It’s a really big problem there, because it was built as a country road for the occasional car, but now it’s carrying a lot more traffic than it was originally designed to carry (due to) all of the development taking place in Horizon West,” VanderLey said.

The Ficquette Road Segment G, H-1 and H-2 roadway improvement project, which includes several modifications to the intersection, isn’t scheduled to begin construction until 2022 and see completion until 2024.

However, VanderLey worked out a plan to install a traffic signal at the intersection a few years ahead of schedule. “(The roadway) is not targeted to be widened until 2022, but because that corner is so acute, I was able to convince staff to pull the light out and design the light

with the width of the road in mind for the eventual construction and get that light in,” VanderLey said.

“So the design is done, and the equipment parts were ordered last October. It was anticipated it would be all done by Christmas.

However, the manufacturer of the mast arms has a significant backlog, and we’re seeing that on a number of different traffic signals in Horizon West in particular, but also all over the county.”

VanderLey was made aware of the dangerous situation by Horizon West residents after coming into office. Installing a traffic light there ahead of the original construction timeline seemed like the best solution, she said.

The county expects to receive the required mast arm by late spring or early summer, she said.

In the meantime, temporary rumble strips will be installed to discourage drivers from traveling Reams Road at high speeds. The rumble strips will be removed once the light is installed.

“I’m just trying to get as creative as I can and trying to think of anything I can to mitigate the situation while we’re waiting on the alternate solution,” VanderLey said.

Paradise Cove seeks to build indoor venue near Lake Bryan The wedding/banquet venue wants to offer a place to host indoor ceremonies and events.

The future is bright and filled with plans to accommodate growth at Foundation Academy — including the addition of a new Lower School campus.

FA students and staff hosted the school’s annual State of the Academy addressThursday, Jan. 10, at its Tilden Road campus.

Hundreds of parents and their children attended and listened as school administrators highlighted the past year’s accomplishments and looked forward to the future at Foundation.

Accompanying the evening’s theme of “The Power of One,” administrators shared statistics and stories of the academy’s successes, student accomplishments and plans to further improve the school’s Christian-education experience. From academics and athletics to faith, family involvement and fine arts, school staff said Foundation is in good shape and poised for growth.

NEW LOWER SCHOOL

Perhaps the biggest announcement of the evening was confirmation of a new Lower School campus. Buckles first announced school staff was looking to open another elementary campus dur-

ing the 2017 State of the Academy address, and gears are moving quickly to make that dream a reality.

“Due to the continual population growth in our area and our Lower School campus being full on a regular basis, we have begun this work, which eventually will house kindergarten through sixth grade,” Buckles said.

The new campus, to be located on the First Baptist Church of Windermere’s Lakeside campus, will be in addition to the existing Lower School campus in downtown Winter Garden. This additional location will bring FA’s total to three campuses. Pending permitting and working with Orange County, Buckles said the goal is to open the new campus for the 2019-20 school year.

FA already partners with First Baptist Church of Winter Garden to house the existing Lower School campus, and now both entities will work with FBC Windermere to promote Christian education, Buckles said.

“Our hope is that in opening the Lakeside campus, we will see students and families come to know the love of Christ,” Buckles said.

“There are some practical obstacles we are actively and faithfully working on. We have some county issues and permitting that must be

tended to, (but) with that said our goal is to open this location August of 2019.”

UPPER SCHOOL EXPANSION

Foundation is working on plans to build a new road around the Upper School campus.

“Moving us forward into the future, we are quite literally building a road to that future — a road that will go around our property and will exit out to Mann Road,” Buckles said. “We will add more paved parking. This road is required because of a building addition that we will need to build in the next two years.”

With the population growth in the Winter Garden and Horizon West areas, as well as increasing interest in Foundation Academy, the new buildings coming soon to the Upper School campus will create more space for students to learn and engage.

The main building in the works will have eight classrooms, two science labs and a band and drama room. Additionally, Buckles said, staff has begun the preliminary designs on the fine-arts and cafeteria buildings. This will be completed in two phases. The cafeteria will seat up to 400 students at any given time, and the state-of-theart fine-arts building will seat 1,500 people.

Head of School Carol Grosshans began by summarizing some of Foundation’s biggest highlights from the last year, as curated by a survey completed by its families.

Academically, the Lower School’s standardized Terra Nova test scores continue to be above national average, while the Upper School’s SAT scores continue to increase in the last four years, she said. Through dual-enrollment partnership with Grand Canyon University and Southeastern University, 25% of the 2019 graduating class has the potential to move on to college with the equivalent of six to 20 college-level classes.

For the first time in Foundation’s history, there are two AP Scholars with Distinction. Additionally, senior Jonathan Richardson has become the school’s first National Merit Scholar semifinalist.

She also highlighted the fine-arts department, which has a handful of students heading to state competition in the categories of musical solo, costume design and group pantomime.

For athletics, Foundation played on its own home field for the first time this season, and the varsity football team made it to regional finals.

The school also recently added competitive tennis and middle-school competitive cheer, and staff is researching and considering adding boys and girls weightlifting, swim and lacrosse.

Other recent additions are the new playgrounds at the Lower School campus, new science labs and upgraded security measures — such as the implementation of more security guards at both campuses.

A wedding venue in southwest Orange County could be getting some upgrades.

Orange County leaders hosted a community meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9, regarding the rezoning of a 9.8-acre property located at 13245 Lake Bryan Drive, which is east of State Road 535 and south of Ski Holiday Drive. The applicant is requesting to rezone the property from A-2 farmland rural district to Planned Development to allow for the construction of a wedding/banquet venue and water-sport rental facility. The future land-use designation of the property is Activity Center Mixed Use. The property is currently the site of Buena Vista Watersports — a business where individuals can rent various watercrafts — and Paradise Cove, an outdoor wedding and event venue. The applicant is requesting to rezone the property to construct an indoor venue for weddings and banquets on the southern part of the property.

“They’re currently holding (outdoor) weddings on-site,” applicant Darcy Unroe said.

“They want to have the ability to put those (wedding events) into a room. … The idea is that it’s a wedding reception hall.”

Many of the guests of Paradise Cove stay at one of the hotels near the property, which is off a private road. Some of those hotels even offer shuttle services by bus or boat for guests who are attending weddings at Paradise Cove.

Because of this, traffic impacts from the venue are expected to be minimal. The property is located near the Holiday Inn Resort Orlando — Lake Buena Vista and Sabal Palm at Lake Buena Vista.

“It’s pretty well-hidden,” Unroe said. “The idea is this is more of a destination-type wedding (venue). A lot of the people would end up being (guests) at the surrounding hotels. We try and provide (them) transportation — limo services to hotels (and) shuttle services. … The idea is to try and reduce the amount of car traffic. We’re really trying to reduce that impact.”

hildren giggled as they were instructed to line up across from their dads in the cafeteria at Keene’s Crossing Elementary.

Pumped up with sugar from breakfast, they were excited for the challenge at hand. The challenge? To try and break the “dad wrist lock.”

The fathers were lined up across from their children, hands gripping wrists as they created a bond representing loyalty. Going down the line, one grade at a time, the students were to try anything they could to break this bond — but, like true loyalty, it wasn’t easily broken.

It might have been an early morning, but dads and their children seemed awake and mutually excited to spend time eating, laughing and learning together.

It’s part of the All Pro Dad program that a couple of fathers recently began at KCE. ALL PRO DAD

The program encourages fathers to embrace who they are and inspire them to be the best husbands and fathers they can be. The goal is to provide guidance and tips for raising children in a positive, lifegiving way.

It is a branch of Family First, a Tampa-based nonprofit organization that was launched in 1997

by Mark Merrill with the help of former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy. All Pro Dad is centered on a football theme, and NFL players, coaches and alumni regularly partner with it to speak

about the importance of being a good father.

The APD chapters provide opportunities for dads to spend time with their children and foster stronger relationships, while also benefitting schools and communities. APD currently has more than 1,000 chapters nationwide, each of which hosts a monthly breakfast and learning opportunity.

When Horizon West residents and neighbors Bryan Fifer and Jason Diehl were introduced to APD, they knew they wanted to start a chapter at their children’s school.

“I’ve seen a lot of billboards (for the program) driving around, and my aunts put me in contact with the book by Tony Dungy, who’s one of the founders,” Diehl said.

“I started reading that, and seeing some of his morals that he tries to instill, it’s amazing that he can communicate so well. … It’s good, and we’re excited to be able to start them young and build that up.”

Fifer was introduced to the concept after attending an All Pro Dad’s Day event at the Citrus Bowl a few years ago, and as he learned more about the program he knew he wanted to bring it to KCE. “Jason and I are good friends and neighbors, so we talked about it, kicked it around and said, ‘Let’s start it for our school,’” he said.

“That’s really how it came to life, and then when we got connected with (Assistant Principal) Sam (Davis), he was all about it.”

Davis was familiar with APD from previously working at a Title I school. He loved the program for its promotion of mentorship and positive character traits.

BUILDING CHARACTER

At KCE, the APD breakfast program is held the second Wednesday of each month. During the most recent event on Wednesday, Jan. 9, the topic of discussion was loyalty.

Each event begins with a welcome and “shout out what you’re proud about.”

This exercise requires each dad to find another dad they don’t know and introduce their children. During each introduction, the dad must find a specific reason he is proud of his child and say it out loud so the child can hear it.

“It’s building the kids’ confidence, because they’re hearing their dad say, ‘I’m proud of you because of this,’ but it’s also kind of secretly teaching the dads and telling them, ‘Hey, continue to build your kids up by finding ways to encourage them,’” Fifer said.

“It’s important because we can say it in our homes and everything, but out in the public, if we show that appreciation and tell them it means the world to them,” Diehl said. “It means (to your child) that, ‘OK, maybe they do care and they

“There’s studies that show that the more you have parents involved, the better the achievement of a student,” Davis said. “It reinforces what we’re teaching and helps make better citizens and a better environment all around.”

The program at Keene’s Crossing launched in September 2018.

Additionally, there are three other fathers in addition to Fifer and Diehl who volunteer to help run the program. The goal is to eventually have at least one volunteer for every 10 families who attend. Short-term rental owner requests shorter stays The owner of a property approved for short-term rental units is requesting Orange County to reduce the minimum length of stay at the proposed development.

Orange County leaders hosted a community meeting Thursday, Jan. 10, regarding a substantial change request for a 2.07-acre property that already has been approved for short-term rental units.

The property is located at 11753 Ruby Lake Road at the southeast intersection of Ruby Lake Road and Eighth Street in southwest Orange County. The future landuse designation of the property is Activity Center Mixed Use, and it’s zoned as Planned Development.

The applicant is requesting to amend one of the conditions of approval of the development to allow for a minimum stay of six days, as opposed to the current minimum of two weeks. The request is intended to expand the business opportunities of the short-term rental development being proposed for the property.

“What we’re asking for with this (development) is to reduce it from a 14-day minimum stay to a six-day minimum stay,” said Russell Maynard, of Central Florida Engineering Consultants, who spoke on behalf of the applicant.

“The average stay in the area for local (tourists) ... (is) anywhere between four and five days. International (tourists stay) six to 10 days, and this is based on a study that Universal (Studios) did. We’re a little bit above the local (average stay) and a little below the international (average stay).”

Maynard said the owner is proposing to build 14 short-term

rental units on the property. The units will be constructed to look like single-family homes. Parking for the proposed development would be in the back of the rental units.

“Basically, they’ll be houses that are going to be (short-term rentals),” Maynard said. “The front doors will face the outside roadways, but as far as the vehicular access and so forth, everything will be internal to the project.”

Some residents in attendance brought up the ongoing traffic problems in southwest Orange County and the Dr. Phillips area and argued the proposed development could add to the problem.

District 1 County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey said the county has been working on some infrastructure projects in the area that should help alleviate some traffic.

“There is scheduled a new interchange at Daryl Carter Parkway and I-4, which will help alleviate some of the pressure on Sand Lake (Road),” VanderLey said. “Additionally, the entire interchange at Sand Lake (Road) and I-4 will be reconfigured to take the problem of Turkey Lake (Road), Sand Lake (Road) and I-4 out of the equation.”

The applicant, Norberto Duarte, said most tourists who visit the area typically only bring one or two vehicles. He added they usually spend all day visiting the theme parks and are typically off the roads during peak rush hours.

“Normally, tourists come with one … van or a (large) car with six or seven seats,” Duarte said. “They stay, most of the time, out of the area.”

A few years ago, Carmine Warren wanted to figure out a way to take his photography to a new level.

The portrait and fashion photographer wanted his photos to be unique, and he was able to do so with the help of his niece.

One evening, she showed him

pulls me aside and says, ‘I gotta show you something.’ … They pull up YouTube and they pull up these Worbla videos. I (was) absolutely fascinated by this.”

That night, Warren watched hours’ worth of Worbla videos on YouTube with his niece and family members. Soon, he began crafting with Worbla himself and started making items to use in his photography.

“The next day, I ordered everything you could possibly imagine (for Worbla),” he said. “I ordered three or four sheets of Worbla, I ordered a heat gun, I order silicone mats — everything you needed.”

Today, Warren considers himself both a photographer and Worbla artist. He will be teaching how to create masks using Worbla in a workshop at the SoBo Art Gallery, 127 S. Boyd St., in Winter Garden.

The workshop takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20. Cost of attendance is $120 for Winter Garden Art Association members and $130 for non-members. Those interested can sign up online at wgart.org, by phone or at the SoBo Art Gallery. Spaces will not be reserved until full payment is received.

The mask-making workshop is being held to complement the Winter Garden Art Association’s upcoming gala event in February.

Although the workshop is limited to six people, the WGAA will add another workshop before the gala if the Jan. 20 workshop fills up, said Philip Self, executive director of the art association.

ANDREA HICKMAN WHITE DIED MONDAY, JAN. 7, 2019.

Gladys Irene Bennett, beloved daughter of Jasper Newton and Naomi Woodley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, in Lake Jackson, Texas.

She was 99 years old. Her husband of 59 years, Alexander Hamilton Steven Bennett, preceded her in death in 2002.

Gladys was born in Leoma, Tennessee, on July 17, 1919. Her parents and nine brothers and sisters soon moved to Winter Garden, Florida, where she graduated from Lakeview High School.

Gladys and Alex met in church, which was so appropriate, as they both loved God. They were married on May 1, 1943, in Winter Garden. Gladys was the beloved mother of two sons.

She followed her husband to retirement in the U.S. Air Force and raised her sons throughout this country, having lived in seven different states from Alaska to Florida.

She was always described as “the kindest person you would ever meet.” This was attested to by many, many people.

Although distance kept them apart more than she would have liked, she often talked of her love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Andrea is survived by her husband, Ernest Kenneth White; daughter, Dr. Kathryn White Austin; brother, E. Cameron Hickman and sisterin-law, Kathy Kirbo Hickman; along with her grandchildren, Caitlin Lee Snelson, Matthew Cameron Austin and Ryan Sutherland Austin. She leaves behind a loving extended family of step-grandchildren, Ashley (Rick) Lombardo and their children, Jillian and Michaele; Alyse (Brad) Simons and their children, Beckham and Brooks; and Michaelene Austin (Colin Emerson) and their children, Benjamin and Amelia. She is also grieved as family by Yulia Doctchennikov, Dmtiry Karpov and Elizabeth Karpov, as well as a wide host of family and friends from various aspects of her richly blessed life.

Andrea was born in Jesup, Georgia, on June 7, 1942, to Ann Cameron Hickman and James W. Hickman. Her fam-

reparing for an athletic competition such as American Ninja Warrior is no easy task.

The extreme physical demand of having to throw yourself around obstacles — often flying through the air from one to another — and holding up your bodyweight by your fingertips seems impossible.

A staple win over Apopka last week has the Panthers wrestling team feeling good about the state of the program now.

It’s the District Duels at West Orange High School on Wednes-

day, Jan. 9, and his Dr. Phillips boys wrestling team is putting in work against Apopka — a team with which it has struggled.

But this year is different, much different. Instead of being blown out, by the end of the match, the Panthers find themselves on the right end of a 50-22 scoreline.

Although the Panthers had duked it out in nine matches prior, this is the moment that really made an impact on Aubrey in his second year as the wrestling head coach.

“Last year, we got straight up dominated by Apopka,” Aubrey said. “This year to go out there and lay it all on the line and be as physical as we were, I think that match really stands out in my head.”

Probably my senior night, just because it’s my last night with my team.

Work hard and never quit even if you feel down and like you’re not good enough — just keep working hard.

How did it feel to shut out Wekiva?

It was good. It’s always nice to get to get home early and win with your team.

What are your plans for college?

I’m going to be attending Lees-McRae up in North Carolina to play soccer for them.

What’s something about your game that you want to improve?

I want to improve my speed of play and my touch on the ball.

Any planned major?

Biology.

What’s your favorite meal after a soccer game?

I usually eat a lot of pasta — any type of pasta.

What’s your favorite aspect of the game?

Playing with the girls. (I) like all the friendships that I make and all the experiences and memories that we get to make together.

which sits on the edge of the Dr. Phillips community. “It’s something active that I thought was fun, so it kind of helped me be a healthier person. It’s just a good hobby and gave me something positive to do.”

That fire to do something positive is what led Roman — a native of Jacksonville and current Orlando resident — to reach the Las Vegas finals of American Ninja Warrior in June. He finished in 11th place.

The competition was a culmination of all the hard work he had completed over the course of the year, and despite the grandness of it all, Roman was more ready than he had ever been.

“I was way more excited than nervous, (because) I had already competed and seen what it was like,” Roman said. “Also, the night before I left for Las Vegas, the qualifying episode that I competed in aired and I wasn’t featured in it at all, so that kind of gave me more motivation to do well. I went into the finals with a different mindset than the qualifying — I was like an excited little kid in qualifying — while in the finals I was a lot more concentrated on actually competing than just having a chance at being on the show.”

American Ninja Warrior is a sports-entertainment competition that airs on NBC that has exploded in popularity since its premier in 2009. The competition sees athletes of all backgrounds compete in a series of obstacle courses that get more and more difficult as the athletes advance.

At the finals, Roman finished the first night of the finals in a little more than two minutes — finishing 11th — before going on to stage two the following night.

Unfortunately on the second night, Roman made it to the fifth obstacle (called “Wingnut Alley”) before bowing out of the competition.

Although some would be disappointed to not finish, it should be noted that in the 10 years of the competition only four people ever have finished stage two — three in last year’s competition. Among the rookies competing, Roman made it the farthest.

EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME

Getting the chance to compete on the highest level is an opportunity that Roman had been dreaming of since he first discovered ANW at age 17.

As a kid, he was active — climbing trees and other obstacles — before becoming a fan of parkour.

“Parkour is getting from Point A to Point B in your own creative way, which is basically what American Ninja Warrior is — you’re getting from the start to the finish, just getting past the obstacles in front of you,” Roman said.

Roman found any means of practicing his sport. He made friends with a Jacksonville local named Chris Johnson, who had a course set up in his backyard to train, and competed in smaller tournaments.

The training and friendships are what led Roman to his current situation today as a competitor on both the local and national stage, as well as his role of head ninja master at ONA. It’s a job that goes just beyond his own time as an athlete in the sport he loves.

“There were a lot of nerves, especially because with it being my first year I wanted to make a name for myself,” Roman said. “I didn’t want to be another person who went out on the first or second obstacle. I wanted to do well.”

The two-day competition was grueling in multiple aspects.

Roman got up to do interviews and B-roll at 7 a.m. before trying to relax a bit prior to his competition. And the way the program worked, he didn’t get to make his first run at the obstacle course until 4 a.m. the next morning.

Unlike the finals — where the athletes know what obstacles they will face — Roman and the others went in clueless as to what they would have to deal with in qualifiers.

“We don’t have any time to prepare for what is there,” Roman said. “Sometimes, competitors will try to sneak a look at it before then, and then the night before try to train at a ninja gym — luckily there was one in Miami that we were able to replicate a couple of the obstacles.”

After struggling to field a team in pervious seasons, the Panthers now have a roster stacked with talent.

During that two-match night, which concluded with a 22-50 loss to West Orange, Aubrey saw the progress that had been made over the last two years.

Built in his image, the onceproud Panthers wrestling team finally has established some roots and its athletes have bought into what Aubrey has been selling.

Just as he takes on his role as the defensive line coach for the Panthers’ football team, Aubrey utilizes a brashness he feels better prepares his athletes. The straightforward, no-sugarcoating approach of telling his wrestlers what they need to hear works, and it’s something that motivates his guys effectively.

Following a big win for junior Andre Young (195-pound weight class) against Apopka that Wednesday night at West Orange, Aubrey approached Young and talked to him about his upcoming matchup with West Orange.

“When I saw the 195-pounder (from West Orange) who wrestled the kid from Evans, I looked at Andre and said, ‘Man, you’re about to get wrecked this round, but go out there and do the best that you can,’” Aubrey said. “He looked at me and said, ‘All right coach.’ I challenged him.

“Man, he went out and freaking demolished that kid; he just wore that kid out,” he said. “I think seeing those little spurts of intensity and mental toughness — I think that is going to spread.”

Coaching up his athletes with tough love and sometimes brutal honesty is the building block that Aubrey has utilized, and it’s helped the Panthers re-establish an identity for his team, which now sits at 6-5 on the year.

Furthermore, unlike last year’s team, which had only a half dozen participants, this year’s squad has a full deck to work with. It’s the first time in a good while the Panthers have been able to fill a roster.

Led by the returning trio of junior Ja Breil Etienne (145), senior Giovany Preval (138) and senior Tyrese Hicks (120), this year’s Panthers team has the pieces to be competitive and bring home wins.

At 12-2, Preval has become one of the biggest standouts.

“He is having a really good year,” Aubrey said. “He has gotten five times better than the last year — I wish I had him for one more year.

He is one of those kids (who) is just physically tough, and he wrestles with really good technique and he has really surprised me, as well.”

Other athletes, such as sophomore Gerald Greaves (220), are stepping up as they look to become the future of the program.

“He is a first-year wrestler, but right now he is 11-4, and he is really dominating a lot of matches not just with his strength, but he is beating guys with technique,”

Aubrey said. “And that’s what is really neat — that he has really grasped the concept of wrestling.”

Developing his athletes has been a big focal point for Aubrey since the beginning, and although there are short-term goals such as finishing in the top three at districts, those are just steps toward something bigger. “(The goal) is to build the numbers, start a junior program and to ultimately win districts and be competitive in the districts,” Aubrey said. “Right now, it’s retaining the kids and then building up a younger program to just make sure the mentality is there by the time we get into the season.”
