As a new school, it initially set out with a modest goal of fundraising $30,000. Instead, Windermere High doubled that amount. By fundraising $60,098, Windermere High School, which just opened its doors in fall 2017, ranked 13th in the nation’s list of top fundraising high schools for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Are your recyclables being recycled? A year after China imposed restrictions on imported recyclables, the county is still feeling the impact. ERIC GUTIERREZ STAFF WRITER

After the Chinese government imposed new restrictions last year on imported recyclables, the recycling industry around the world changed, and those impacts have been felt close to home. At one point, about 45% of the world’s recyclable plastics were sent to China, but that changed when the country passed its National Sword policy in 2017 — which took effect in January 2018 — to help combat climate change. The policy bans 24 types of imported scrap materials and imposes a 0.5% contamination standard for imported recycled plastics, according to NPR.org and wastedive.com. YOUR TOWN HOLY FAMILY HELPS HURRICANE VICTIMS Holy Family Catholic School’s Reachout Committee partnered with Catholic Charities to raise $1,505.81 for Hurricane Florence victims, as well as supply donations for those affected by Hurricane Michael. The Reachout Committee is a group of six students: Zach Wolsonvovich, Antonio Adornetto, Madison Lester, Tatum Cempella, Francesca Rielly and Annalise Blomberg.
