The search is on for Orlando’s next singing star.

The best vocal talent in Central Florida will battle it out for a top prize of $1,000 cash and the title of Aloma Bowl’s Karaoke Idol.

The competition will consist of qualifier rounds, semifinals and finals throughout January and February.

Aloma Bowl’s Karaoke Idol is open to all amateur entertainers 18 years and older.

Singers will bring their best with their go-to tune, and audience applause will decide which three contestants advance each night from qualifying rounds on Jan. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

The field will be narrowed further at the semifinal rounds on Feb. 1 and 8.

The six finalists will sing their hearts out for the top prize Feb. 15. First place takes home $1,000 cash, second place earns $500 cash, and third place wins a $100 gift card.

To enter, karaoke hopefuls must submit an entry form in person no later than one hour before the preliminaries. Forms are available at Brooklyn Bar South. No instruments are allowed, and performers must compete individually. There is no entry fee.

ward for the Winter Park Canopy — Winter Park’s new library and event center — as the design phase presses onward toward an unveiling of the city’s final vision for the facility.

It’s been a long road leading up to this point. The project has seen its share of controversy — most of all over the location in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The city spent a significant amount of money in legal fees in 2016 to put a dispute to rest regarding the site. A group of Winter Park residents took issue with the language in a ballot item that went before voters in March of that year regarding a bond referendum — one of up to $30 million that would make the project possible.

The ballot language didn’t include the location of the project, leaving some residents feeling they didn’t have a say in the new project’s location.

Orange County Judge Margaret Schreiber issued a final judgment Dec. 7, 2016, that validated the city’s desire to finance a $30 million bond to fund the demolition of the city’s existing civic center and construction of a new events center, library and parking structure — all within Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.

Residents such as Peter Gottfried — a former Planning and Zoning Board member — still have strong feelings about the park not being the right place for the project.

“It’s right in the middle of a major traffic area … with 17-92 and all that congestion down there,” Gottfried said. “It takes up more area of the park than really what all the electioneering materials from the city said it was. It was going to be very compact and take up an additional 1% (of the park space).

According to my calculations, it’s probably 8% of the whole park — that’s a significant increase in the amount of square footage. The residents were misled from the standpoint of what this was going to be.”

City Manager Randy Knight said the location makes perfect sense and will tie in nicely with the existing green space and it’s various amenities.

“Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is an ideal location for the Canopy for both our residents and visitors,” Knight said. “It is within close walking distance to our Hannibal Square neighborhoods and adjacent to the retail and commercial corridor as well. The Canopy embraces the natural surroundings and invites people to use the facility amenities while they also enjoy the lakes and green space around it.

MONEY MATTERS

Other controversy has circled around the price tag of the project.

The bond referendum passed by voters would pay for a project of up to $30 million, but new amenities such as a rooftop terrace on the event center, an outdoor amphitheater on the lake and a raked auditorium in the library have surfaced throughout the conceptual phase of the project.

It’s a series of events that has left some residents questioning whether the project will remain under budget.

“There is a fundraising effort currently in place to fund addalternates such as the rooftop terrace, outdoor amphitheater and indoor raked auditorium,” Knight said. “The architectural design team is working on bringing the project within budget.”

The city already has received positive feedback from private donors about the additional items, Mayor Steve Leary said at the Nov. 12 City Commission meeting.

Commissioners voted that day to fund the design of the rooftop venue, costing $290,000.

support this,” Leary said.

Some residents also have taken issue with the way parking has been handled — in particular the decision to go from a parking garage to surface parking, which will potentially take up more of the existing park space beyond the 1% originally stated by the city. The project is designed with 237 parking spaces (213 on-site and 24 along Harper Street), which is about 62% above the code requirement of 146. This will allow for more parking in the future, according to city officials.

“The surface area of the parking lot and travel lanes will be just under 2 acres, spread across three lots,” Knight said. “Early in the design phase, the idea of a parking garage was eliminated and was not included in the conceptual or schematic designs that went to the Commission for approval.”

“This project goes from bad to worse as it moves on — both financially, aesthetically and ethically,” resident Sally Flynn said during the meeting. “One of the things we were told was (the library) couldn’t be anywhere else, because there had to be a parking structure and that could not happen where the library is now. Now (the city) voted that down, and there’s no parking structure. We’re spreading parking and cement over where there’s green space. … We’re just taking more and more of that park.

It is not following the rules of the referendum. This is a project that Winter Park cannot be proud of.”

Conversely, resident Jim Barnes spoke in favor of the project during the same meeting.

“I support the new library and event center,” said Barnes, who also

agreed with the city’s approach to the parking. “I think the structure will be world-class.”

MOVING FORWARD

Despite the controversy and differing opinions, Knight said it’s perfectly normal considering the importance of the project.

“One of the things I admire about our Winter Park residents is their passion for our city,” he said.

“Similar to the streetscape bricking of Park Avenue, parking garage at Park Place and the SunTrust buildings and even the beautiful Alfond Inn, there was some concern about all of these projects,” he said. “But now, years later, these buildings and projects have become a part of the charm of our downtown and what adds to the city’s unique appeal. I am confident the Canopy will be the same.”

The project is set for a grand opening date in August 2020.

FIRM FOUNDATION? With one of the largest sinkholes in Florida’s history happening just a stone’s throw away in the southeast corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (where Lake Rose sits today), it’s understandable that the soil beneath the new Canopy project may be called into question.

Despite concerns and fears from residents, Knight said soil borings have shown no potential dangers.

“Extensive geotechnical exploration work has been performed on the site,” he said. “Experts and staff agree that the site is appropriate for the construction of the project.”

The Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center has stood on that land for more than 30 years.

inter Park continues to see its niche market thrive, according to experts and local real-estate agents — even if it isn’t thriving as

much as last year. Numbers from the Orlando Regional REALTOR Association show sales were slightly down in 2018 compared to 2017. The Orange County market is down about 3% from a year ago, and communities such as Winter Park and Maitland have followed that trend. Sales in the 32789 ZIP code from January to November in 2018 decreased by 66 sales compared to 2017. The market in 32792 saw a decrease of eight sales, while 32751 saw seven fewer sales.

But the market still remains healthy, and it’s not a bad sign to see things slow down slightly, 2019 Association President and Watson Realty Corp. Regional Vice President Jeffrey Fagan said.

“Everything’s in context — if you look at the growth that occurred in 2015, 2016 and 2017 in price and units being sold, we necessarily have to slow down a little bit,” Fagan said. “A thriving recovery is one that’s more balanced as opposed to something skyrocketing. If something skyrockets too fast or too long, it suppresses the total long-range growth. I, for one, was relieved to see the market cool off slightly and go with more of a balanced market as opposed to a strong sellers market.”

Mortgage rates increasing is also normal to see, especially consid-

ering they were artificially suppressed by the government, Fagan said.

“For the past decade, we’ve had very, very low mortgage rates,” he said. “Ultimately, mortgage rates and interest rates need to return back to some sense of normalcy, which is what you’ve been seeing throughout 2018 and you’re going to likely continue to see in 2019.

That’s a necessary thing that has to happen.”

Looking ahead to 2019, Fagan said Orlando proper — the whole metro area including Winter Park and Maitland — likely will see sales drop a little bit more. The success of 2018 still could carry over to at least the first half of 2019 though, he said.

“Prices will continue to be pressured upward, because we

Various projects materializing in the city’s new downtown are made up of apartments, meeting a growing demand for rental housing.

“Vacancy rates are very, very low, and rental prices are going up — appreciating annually,” Orlando Regional REALTOR Association President Jeffrey Fagan said. “That’s why you’re seeing some development of new apartment buildings and new rental housing. There’s a demand for it. The rental market and apartment market is very strong right now.”

Premier Sotheby’s International Realty agent Mick Night said Maitland is a stable, family-friendly community in proximity to the nearby lakes, just like Winter Park. Prices are likely to rise in Maitland with the way the overall market is going, but the city is growing, he said.

“There are several developments going on in Maitland,” Night said. “I’m not sure how that’s going to change the landscape there, but I’ve noticed certainly that Maitland is changing in nothing but a positive way.”

don’t have a lot of inventory and new-home building will slowly increase, albeit the price point of the new home communities for the most part will be higher than I would like to see,” Fagan said. “I’d like to see some more affordable new-home communities coming in. I think interest rates are going to slowly move up, too.”

Lower inventory has in some cases pushed many Winter Park residents to renovate or expand their home instead of trying to buy a new place of residence, Fagan said.

“Once people get in Winter Park, they want to stay in Winter Park,” he said.

Regarding the homes throughout the city, Fagan said Winter Park has a varying price point: from affordable housing all the way to luxury properties.

“The higher-priced homes won’t see some of the appreciation going forward as some of the lower priced, because if something’s lower priced and it goes up a little bit as a percentage of its total price, it’s a bigger percentage increase,” Fagan said. “At the end of the day, Winter Park is a strong community, has been a strong community and will continue to be a strong community.”

Winter Park certainly belongs within the top 10 hottest markets in Orange County in terms of number of sales, despite the community’s smaller size, Fagan said.

“You do have strong demand, because it is such a nice community supported by very good schools and supported by a lot community activity and things to do,” Fagan said. “All of those things make it very appealing to home buyers. … It’s one of the premier destinations in Orange County.”

International Realty, said Winter Park as a whole always will be in demand because of its unique character, charm, Park Avenue, brick streets and chain of lakes that sets it apart from the rest of Orange County. As Orlando continues to grow, that unique smalltown market becomes even more valuable, he said.

“I think (the market) is really healthy — I feel like we’ve seen some stabilization in the market this year depending on the price point you’re in,” Night said.

“We’ve been on a run since summer of 2012 — that’s when the market started noticeably turning back upward. We’ve been in that run ever since. (2017) was to me the biggest year in the history of my 31 years of the market being at a peak. This year has been more healthy than I anticipated, and it seems to still have a very good energy. I can’t see in the next six to 12 months that we’re going to see much of anything different short of some global event that affects everything.”

Winter Park isn’t so much a bubble but rather a micro-market thats landlocked and in very high demand, said Night’s partner, John Pinel.

No house stays on the market for long in a community such as Winter Park, Night said. That’s especially true with the luxury homes that are more than $1 million.

“You’re going to find that there are more transactions in 32789 north of $1 million than any other zip code, including Southwest Orlando, on an annual basis — and we’re far smaller,” Night said. “(Winter Park) to me is kind of the crown jewel. new year means a new beginning, and

no one may be more exited for the new chapter to start than newly elected Florida state representatives Anna Eskamani (District 47) and Joy GoffMarcil (District 30).

It’s been a couple months since the two Democratic representatives were voted in by residents Nov. 6, and already, they both are getting used to the new roles and hearing from constituents.

Both Eskamani and Goff-Marcil have their priorities lined up for their first year in office, and hope to bring change to their districts and the state.

Eskamani already has been busy in her first month as a state representative, attending meetings regarding HIV reduction, mental-health funding, environmental concerns and tiny homes being an opportunity for affordable housing.

“It’s been pretty incredible,” Eskamani said. “I come into the work with 10 years of advocacy experience, with about seven of those walking in the halls of the Legislature advocating for reproductive health issues, advocating for access to health care. For me, it’s a little more familiar terrain to walk through that building, but it’s very different to be the one that has the member pin on.

“It’s such a different opportunity for dialogue and conversation with my legislative colleagues on what are our priorities as a state and where can we find common ground,” she said. “That’s what’s been most compelling for me.”

It’s been a surprise to see just how many requests and discussion points already have come up in the first month, Eskamani said.

“We are getting so many requests, and I think part of it is we knocked on 50,000 doors in

the district, and we really want to make sure folks knew who we are and why we’re fighting,” she said.

“A natural evolution of that is now you’re elected and people are coming to us with their questions and concerns. My day is packed with back-to-back meetings integrating into my work schedule. It’s navigating all those pieces and just the incredible love and energy from the district alongside folks expressing a question or issue — that’s been really remarkable.”

Although Eskamani enters the state house as a Democratic representative, many of requests from constituents haven’t been about

issues that fall on one side of the aisle, she said.

“Many of the issues that we face aren’t partisan in nature,” Eskamani said. “I’ve had three different conversations with stakeholders and constituents primarily focused on regulation … entering the business field wanting the opportunity to expand their business but facing barriers and red tape when it comes to state government.”

One local initiative that Eskamani will focus on is working with the Florida Department of Transportation on accidents occurring on Orange Avenue.

“We’re going to do our part to

work with these partners over time to figure out what we can do to reduce accidents,” Eskamani said. “Most of the issues don’t have their partisan angle. They’re just everyday issues that you need a good leader to help solve. I think we’re ready for the task.”

During her term, Eskamani also hopes to tackle mental-health funding, improving public education, creating high-paying jobs and looking at better heath care for all Floridians.

“We have a lot of work to do,” said Eskamani, adding that she hopes to focus on fighting against the privatization of public schools

where I can make a difference in this first term, and then also just stopping the continuation of going toward privatization of public schools,” she said. “It’s the accountability really. They’re not accountable at the same level as the public schools, and that means that not everyone is getting a quality education. We have to work on that.”

She also plans to look at environmental bills that would preserve water quality, as well as support Home Rule within local municipalities.

“I fought for (Home Rule) on our City Council, and I want to do that at the legislative level,” GoffMarcil said.

After serving for about five years on the Maitland City Council, Goff-Marcil now is representing her entire district. It’s a chance of pace, but she can’t wait to get started, she said.

“It was kind of a surreal experience to go to the capital — I was used to Maitland City Hall, so the capital is a little bit of a different building,” Goff-Marcil said, laughing.

“The whole thing was very interesting, and everybody was very nice.”

Goff-Marcil said it’s been exciting to hear from the constituents about the legislation they hope to see in Florida.

“I haven’t figured out which six bills that I’m going to sponsor, so that’s what I’m doing right now — I’m doing a lot of research and trying to figure it out,” she said.

“There’s certain things that I want to do, and then there’s certain things that I know are a possibility of happening, so that’s where I’m weighing the scales. As a freshman, you can’t just come in and change everything. You have to see if you can make a little change, and if you can do that, that’s a huge accomplishment.”

Some issues are new to GoffMarcil, but education remains one of her biggest priorities, she said.

“We need people going to technical school and learning a trade and getting into the work force that way, because not everyone can go to college and succeed and get a job — there’s not enough jobs for all those people that want to be in academia,” Goff-Marcil said.

“We made history together across the country, and I’ve been an advocate on women’s issues my entire life,” Eskamani said.

“To be in a legislative body where women still are the minority — but it still gives us an opportunity to lift up the voices of women, our district and fight for families from every angle — is pretty profound,” she said. “There’s no honor like it, and it’s something I’ll never take for granted.”

The Florida House Democratic caucus being split 50-50 between men and women is a sign of how much things have changed over time, Goff-Marcil said.

“As an attorney, I’ve been practicing law since 1993, and I’ve watched the profession as an attorney change from where if you’re a women you’re just assumed to be the secretary or legal assistant — no one just assumes you’re a lawyer when you walked in — and now for us to be elected that isn’t even an issue,” Goff-Marcil said. “It’s really great to see how much things have changed. I have two daughters — three children altogether — who’ve never even seen what I’m talking about.”

New chapters Rollins College is continuing renovations and developments into the new year.

ollins College is known for having many things — a liberal arts education, an enthusiastic student

body and a bustling arts culture — but none more so than a focus on its long and rich history. Both staff and students at the school, founded in 1885, take pride in its enduring architecture and spirit.

But, enduring doesn’t necessarily mean unchanging. And the Winter Park college is deep into a transitionary period that will become a significant chapter in its storied history.

Two of the school’s iconic institutions — The Fred Stone Theatre and the Mills Memorial Center — are going through changes. The former has been destroyed, while the latter has been almost completely gutted.

It’s a pair of striking moves considering the school’s historical pedigree, but school staff are excited to show Winter Park what will be built in their places.

MILLS MEMORIAL HALL

In many ways, the Mills Memorial Hall is the central hub of the Rollins College campus. But the building — the college’s first library — was seen in many ways as outdated and ill-equipped to deliver a liberal arts education. Two years ago, Rollins President Grant Cornwell decided it was time for a change.

“We had this idea to make sure our physical campus mirrored the educational experiences we want to create for students,” Lord Family Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Community Micki Meyer said. “Mills Memorial Hall is in the center of campus and

was the original library at Rollins.

The building had a lot of different programs, but they weren’t really connected or mission-aligned.”

The new Mills Memorial Hall plan was designed to be the showcase of the campus. It will have an open-office concept with smaller faculty offices — about 96 to 100 square feet — and also will contain many glass panes and windows to promote transparency and accessibility between staff and students.

The idea is to devote more physical space to students to promote collaborative work spaces, Meyer said.

There also will be a number of special amenities inside the building, including a lab for students to discuss and attempt to solve social issues and a film studio. The school’s WPRK radio station, previously relegated to the basement of the building, now will be front and center on the first floor.

The student newspaper also will be present on the first floor. The school’s career center was previously on the outskirts of campus and will be moved to the center.

It’s an ambitious redesign, and staff made sure to keep a portion of the old building intact to retain that Rollins Spanish-Mediterannean feel. The building’s front, which was three floors, will remain, while the back of the building, which was six floors, was

ripped away for a completely new build.

“It’s a building that’s been around since the 50s; there’s a lot of connection and memories for students and alumni,” she said.

“It was always the goal to keep with the look of Rollins, what keeps us unique and special, but also change internally to reflect the changing times.”

The project went through its demolition phase last summer in demolition and soon will enjoy its first concrete pour. Meyers predicts the building will be turned over to staff next August. The building is expected to reopen in the early fall.

NEW BLACK BOX THEATER

Unlike the Mills Memorial Building initiative, the decision to replace the Fred Stone Theatre building took much less time — it was more or less prompted by an act of God. The theater was torn down last summer after it was revealed the building, which served as a Rollins performance space for over four decades, had structural damage stemming from the previous hurricane season.

Since then, the Rollins Theatre Department has been hard at work designing and budgeting a new theater space to take the Fred Stone’s place. The Winter Park Planning and Zoning board gave preliminary approval for a 11,665-square-foot black box theater during its Dec. 4. meeting.

Rollins staff is hopeful the theater will be completed by fall 2020, according to according to David Charles, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance and producing director.

“Clients’ needs are evaluated and we give them a detailed analysis of what they need to do, especially at home, to accomplish their goals,” said owner Monte Mitchell.

Homework might include keeping food and exercise journals to learn more about their habits, especially if weight loss is a goal.

The gym also offers a 12-week group nutrition workshop to their members, guaranteeing results for their clients, provided they follow all the recommendations made during their consultation.

70-year-old physician Dr. Maria Bors has been a client of Elite for seven years and finds that training there fits quite nicely into her busy lifestyle.

“The 20-minute workouts are easy for me to fit in and I find them easy to commit to,” Bors said.

Rather than working out with sweaty, bulked-up gym rats, Elite’s clients find an almost Zen-like atmosphere, with trainers attentive to their every motion.

Speaking in tones of calm assurance, trainers offer equal parts encouragement and challenge, pushing clients to new levels.

The workouts are physically demanding, but not in the way one might expect.

Motions are slow and intensely controlled, demanding maximum effort from muscles while barely breaking a sweat.

“Many clients don’t even change out of office clothes,” Rinehart said. “They simply don’t need to.”

Before beginning with Elite, Bors suffered from daily back pain, but after just a few months in the gym, she experienced a noticeable change in pain levels and now rarely suffers at all.

“It’s been remarkable for me,” she said. “I can feel how strong I am, especially when I am traveling carrying luggage. I have a strength I never had before.”

“The strength training is very good for preventing bone loss,” said Bors, “which is something we all need as we age.”

way to switch to environmentally friendly LED lighting; and a more robust sound system. He notes it will ultimately be a matter of budget versus desire.

“A good black-box space is essentially designed to be flexible,” he said. “That is often our primary question: What’s going to give us the most options? … That’s what excites us, to have a space where we’ve taken off some of the constraints of their imagination.

MOVING ON

The Mills Building has been a Rollins College staple for decades, but faculty felt a new direction was necessary.

The new theater will seat 130 people and have a series of structural updates that will reflect modern design. The Fred Stone theater was originally a church, and some of its architectural fixtures — the interior rises, a “false” presidium archway where the altar once rested — proved to be awkward or clumsy when organizing a show.

Instead, the new theater will have retractable seating for greater flexibility and a gangway walk for easier lighting or scenery adjustments, according to design documents.

Although many of the theater’s finer details are not yet finalized, the more flexible seating arrangements will be beneficial to the building’s daytime classes and evening shows, Charles said.

while; I think everyone was reluctant to put serious money into it,” he said. “If a student really wanted to move the seating but that wouldn’t allow classroom activ-

ity unobstructed, there was a lot of negotiation.”

He said staff also is considering electronic seating that can fold in and out like sports bleaches; a

Rollins theater senior Addison Cursey, 20, said it was bittersweet watching the Fred Stone Theatre being torn down last summer.

But she also has to admit — she’s excited to see what’s next.

Cursey had worked at the Fred Stone theater as an electrician, a lightboard operator and a stage manager. It often had been the beginning venue for underclassmen starting off in theater — groups would work together to touch up the theater and prep the theater equipment — but Cursey admits there were more than a few technical limitations that distracted from the shows themselves.

She recalled one play that needed specific lighting fixtures during which the technical team had to go through extra steps to set up the lighting in the space.

“The less you have to think about what technical steps you have to take, the more you can focus on the design and the performance,” Cursey said. “For us (students), I think we were just ready for a new space just because, although we love the Fred Stone and spent so many hours in there, it just felt old. We’re just really excited for a fresh, amped up space that will get us excited about using it.”

For 2019, the decision was made to move forward without the position of an Executive Director. The Chamber will continue to forge ahead with exciting community-based events, and I hope that everyone will continue to enjoy and participate!

I would like to therefore, take this opportunity to thank all of the Chamber Members and folks in the Maitland Community for the support and friendship that has been afforded me over the last five and a half years, as I served as Executive Director. I’ve met so many truly wonderful people and it has been a true blessing. I’ve made some great new friends and look forward to the years ahead!

y most measures, the city of Maitland has had an eventful year. Most importantly, the city hosted the

grand opening of its downtown venue Independence Square and neighboring retail/apartment complex, the Maitland City Centre.

Some residents have embraced the proposals, others have remained wary, and some have outright rejected these developments. Many more still have

expressed exasperation with the heavy traffic that often slows to a crawl throughout the city.

And many of those changes are expected to continue into the new year.

There’s a lot riding on Independence Lane, the linchpin of the city of Maitland’s downtown plan.

When city staff began researching how to properly launch a downtown initiative, they quickly picked up on one common complaint shared by numerous Maitland residents — the city simply didn’t have an identity.

“Residents wanted a destination, they wanted a downtown, central location as a gathering spot,” said Maitland spokesman Robert Sargent.

Independence Lane is the city’s attempt to build itself a new reputation as a lively city with a bustling social scene. It’s been con-

sidered a success by city staff so far, with Community Development Director Dan Matthys praising the turnout for the monthly Getdown Downtown events. The almost at-capcity City Centre complex has also started opening businesses with more expected to follow soon.

Matthys said the hope is the popularity of each institution will spur growth in the other, leading to a healthier downtown scene as the months go on.

“The city has struggled with a true downtown,” he said. “And downtown can make or break a city. It’s important that we have a place residents are happy with … and proud of to call their city.

One initiative is a more fleshedout bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the city that, hopefully, will connect downtown to other parts of Maitland and reduce traffic. Staff is looking at the existing network and identifying the city’s walkways that need to be filled, sidewalks connecting neighborhoods to schools and ways to easier access downtown being priorities.

“It gets people moving, active, and in and out of downtown while reducing automobile trips on the road,” Matthys said. “We’re an active community. … People are looking for place to be seen, the bicycle/pedestrian integrated system will get people from the outside into downtown and be able to do that without taking an automobile on our roads or dealing with traffic.”

Matthys hopes to introduce the biped master plan — which will include a list of possible pedestrian projects — to city council in the coming months.

He also expects to see work being done for a pedestrian bridge spanning overtop I-4 and connecting sidewalks on Wymore Road and Lake Destiny in 2019, which should offer a safer route for walkers and bicyclists.

“There won’t be traffic signals at the interchange so you won’t have traffic stopping as it’s moving between Maitland Boulevard and I-4, and vice versa,” he said.

The west side of Maitland has seen most of the I-4 Ultimate construction work to date, and completely separate work will begin to expand the east side of Maitland Boulevard to six lanes some time in 2019.

These initiatives should put Maitland somewhat in the endgame. Parks expects the I-4 roadwork to be finished by late 2019 or early 2020 and the $7.1 million Maitland Boulevard expansion project will take about 480 days. Olson stressed FDOT will continue to keep lanes open during construction and relegate closures to late-night hours as often as possible.

“The goal is to keep lanes open, keep traffic flowing while you’re doing the work,” he said. “That’s the game plan.”

The numbers don’t lie — Maitland sees its fair share of traffic.

An average of 77,000 cars travel through Maitland Boulevard daily, with an additional 168,000 that drive on Interstate 4 in the area as well, according to David Parks, Florida Department of Transportation consultant and Public Information Officer for the I-4 Ultimate project. It’s the secondbusiest section of the 21-mile project that will redevelop the Florida interstate.

When you couple those numbers with the numerous roadway projects underway in the city — including the expanding of Maitland Boulevard, reconstructed I-4 ramps and a new Maitland interchange — it often leads to congestion and traffic jams.

Unfortunately, Florida Department of Transportation Communication Manager Steve Olson believes traffic in Maitland will be difficult for some time.

“Construction is somewhat disruptive,” he said. “But things are going to be better when it’s all done. But getting there is the challenge, sometimes.”

Currently, three of the planned four interstate ramps in Maitland have been finished, with the eastbound exit ramp to eastbound Maitland Boulevard still needing work, Olson said. The focus will soon shift to putting new bridges over Keller and Lake Destiny roads to streamline traffic headed west, Parks said.

“By elevating the west side of Maitland Boulevard over top of Lake Destiny, Keller Road and Maitland Summit, we can help funnel the traffic through that’s just passing through the area,” he said.

The city of Maitland has a specific role in mind for the proposed park adjacent to Independence Lane — the anchor for all downtown activities.

“The idea of the park is to work in conjunction with (Independence Lane) in hosting events in the future,” Parks and Recreation Director Jay Conn said. “This park has always been seen as a place where events can be held in Maitland.”

The future 78,000-square-foot park, currently sporting the working title “Independence Square,” will have its official name discussed at a Jan. 14 meeting. The project had 60% of its construction approved recently to the tune of $1.6 million from the Parks and Recreation fund. If completed, the park could begin to host city events such as movie screenings or festivals that have typically been held on Lake Lily, as well as commercial events for Maitland residents and businesses.

The 60% plan first was presented to the City Council in September but was turned down because of its cost and amount of concrete.

City staff returned in November with a revised plan, which was approved. Some of the changes included a less-pronounced specialty sign, reduced sidewalk width, eliminated aggregate paths, table umbrellas, speciality benches and tiered steps on the east side of the park, and more.

Conn said if all goes well, the 60% park plan will be refined over the next two to three months before finalizing construction plans. Following permit approval, construction may start in the early to mid summer and would take about six to seven months. Conn is hopeful the park will be opening and functional by late fall or early spring.

Fresh perspective With new faces representing five of the eight positions on the Orange County School Board, each hopes to bring change.

ast February, dozens of teachers arrived at Orange County Public Schools headquarters in downtown

Orlando — posters in hand and frustration on their faces — and called for a return to education. In October, a resignation letter written by former OCPS teacher Maren Hicks ran in The Washington Post.

“Teachers are no longer given the autonomy to practice what endless amounts of research have proven are developmentally appropriate, dynamic ways of measuring student growth and skill mastery,” Hicks wrote.

But with elections over, parents and teachers — and OCPS as a whole — now have five new faces on the Orange County School Board.

Will this bring about the change residents and teachers are seeking?

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Only three of the School Board’s members —District 3’s Linda Kobert, District 4’s Pam Gould and District 5’s Kat Gordon — are continuing in their roles. Joining them now are School Board Chair Teresa Jacobs, District 1’s Angie Gallo, District 2’s Johanna López, District 6’s Dr. Karen Castor Dentel and District 7’s Melissa Byrd. This also marks the first time the board was made up of all women.

López, a former Spanish teacher at Colonial High and OCPS teacher of the year in 2016, is also the board’s first Puerto Rican member. She decided to run after talking to students and teachers, the latter of whom were frustrated with their workloads.

“The teachers feel overwhelmed, and as a teacher I heard a lot of stories from colleagues feeling frustrated because of the load of work they were having,” López said.

“I believe that was also an asset — to be a voice for the teachers. When you’re in the classroom for so many years and your friends and colleagues are teachers, I know the way they feel. I saw them crying sometimes, and they love what they’re doing, but it’s a lot of work.”

Gallo, a longtime PTA volunteer and former legislative chair for the Florida PTA the last four years, wanted to use her experience in policy and educational advocacy to help lead District 1. Byrd, an OCPS parent and a former teacher, decided it was time to bring her experience to the board. Castor Dentel is a former OCPS teacher and legislator — as well as daughter of Florida’s former education commissioner, Betty Castor — and Teresa Jacobs is the former Orange County mayor.

Each brings a fresh perspective to the table, and although they have many goals in common — improving communication, increasing parental and communal engagement and recruiting and retaining quality teachers — they know their first priority is to listen to the people they serve.

“One thing I heard over and over again when I was knocking on doors was these people feel like they’re not heard,” Byrd said. “That’s one of my big priorities, is to let my community know that I’m here for them and I work for them. … You can’t fix anything if you aren’t even listening or don’t know what’s going on.”

TEACHER TROUBLES

Although these five board members are new to their roles, they recognize the importance of quality teachers and know of the frustrations that educators are voicing — not only in OCPS but also nationwide.

In Hicks’ resignation letter, she wrote she was closing the curtain on her career with OCPS after just five years. The reason?

“There is a massive and deeply concerning disconnect between the supposed aims of OCPS and their practices,” she wrote.

Hicks noted collaboration should occur between everyone involved in public education and that the board needs to listen. She also called for a return to education and lamented the district for treating students as “data points.”

classrooms need,” Hicks wrote.

“We speak at meetings, we write editorials for local papers, we sign petitions and propose legislative measures. Instead, we are met with closed doors and deaf ears.”

These are the same sentiments that were echoed by members of the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association at their February rally in downtown Orlando. There, teachers and parents called for a “clean house,” with some calling for board members who weren’t politically incentivized and who would advocate for students at both the district and state levels.

“I believe that the teacher recruitment and retention is also another challenge we have to work on, because teachers just leave the profession, and it’s very hard to find (quality) teachers,” López said. “When we do find teachers, it’s hard to retain them. Salary is something we have to work on. The load of testing is something that the parents and students are feeling very overwhelmed by — as are the teachers, because you have that responsibility on your shoulders. As a teacher, they evaluate you because of the student results. It’s unfair for teachers to have that type of evaluation and it’s unfair for our students to have so many tests.”

Gallo knows teacher retention is on the minds of many school districts nationwide, and she said the No. 1 issue she hears about from teachers is their cry for autonomy and better pay.

“They got into the profession because they want to make a difference,” Gallo said. “(And) I get it: These teachers work very hard (and) they want the ability to have teachable moments. … We do have a teacher shortage across Florida. Making sure we have highly qualified, happy teachers in classrooms is important because that’s directly linked to student success.”

López said she already is setting up meetings with teachers and hopes to have formal roundtables around her district with teachers and parents to get feedback from them.

“I believe that the community needs to validate the teaching profession more, as well,” López said. “It’s very important. …

You can change children’s lives.”

At the OCCTA rally in February, many teachers voiced frustrations with time management as they juggle regular teaching hours, tutoring and prepping students for standardized testing. But even the district grapples with the state’s current accountability system, Gould said.

“On the time-management side, it’s so difficult because of the way the accountability system is structured,” Gould said.

“It drives all of this benchmarking and tracking … instead of finding ways to utilize what

teachers do every day to really keep us accountable. It’s a constant struggle and the teachers often think we’re responsible for that … but at the end of the day, everybody is stressing out because of the way the accountability system is structured.”

Gould agreed with teachers’ rallies for higher pay, adding that the state needs to fund education at a level that is not only competitive in a highgrowth market but that also shows teachers they are valued.

“We value our educators as the economic-development investors that they are,” Gould said. “They are creating our workforce. On top of that they help shape the character of our children and really inspire kids to invent and be entrepreneurs.”

DIVING IN

Although they stepped into their roles just before the holidays, the new board members are excited to join the current ones in 2019.

Community involvement and parental engagement are crucial keys to ensuring student success, as is school safety, they said.

“I believe if we increase the parental engagement, we can help the students more,” López said. “If we don’t have the parents engaging in the system, it’s kind of hard to work as a team.

That’s something that would make a difference in all of the aspects I’ve mentioned before — safety, smart growth, teachers. … All of us want the students to be successful in life, to graduate and to contribute to our society.”

Byrd plans to focus on community involvement and being present and involved in her district. She hopes to create a community or advisory council of local leaders and stakeholders in education to focus on the communities outside and around the schools.

“The new members are very in touch with the heartbeat of the communities,” Byrd said.

“We have more educators on the board now than we did previously. I think that that is going to definitely raise the bar as far as being in tune with what the teachers need.”

“We also have amazing members (who) already have experience in how to advocate for student rights,” López said. “We have teachers, parents, PTA representatives, a former mayor. … I think we have an amazing school board, and (people) are excited to have them.”

Gould noted that during their first board meeting, the new members were ready to dive into reviewing concerns the board has been facing and helping find improvements and solutions for them.

“When you have fresh perspectives, there’s sometimes answers you didn’t think about before or a new way to do things,” Gould said. “It’s new and exciting. Everybody brings new thoughts and perspectives, and that’s really cool.”

considered by many to be something of an oasis ians can experience good weather, good neighbors and good culture. There are strict laws and noise regulations in place to support that feeling of solace — it can be hard to be disturbed in Winter Park.

Unless, of course, that disturbance comes from above.

Despite being able to avoid disruptions from around Central Florida, Winter Park residents have had much less luck when it comes to the many airplanes that arrive and depart from the Orlando International Airport. And it’s not only residents who have registered complaints concerning the roaring engines overhead. Winter Park leaders have dealt with the situation, as well.

“My wife had been complaining about the airplane noises, and I

happened to be out in the yard one day and saw an airplane that seemed very low to me and very loud,” Winter Park City Commissioner Greg Seidel said. “I actually thought it was crashing, it was so low. It sounded like what you see on TV with a plane going down.”

The main concern from residents is that the airplanes both are flying lower and louder. And many have had one simple question: Is there a solution?

SIZE AND FREQUENCY

In August, two representatives from the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, the governmental body that operates both the Orlando International Airport and the Orlando Executive Airport, attended a Winter Park City Commission meeting. GOAA Assistant Director of Airport Operations and Airfields Judith-Ann Jarrette, who already had been receiving complaints from city residents, gave a presentation hoping to further explain the situation.

Jarrette said she conducted a “virtual window” data study that looked at more than 500,000 flights passing over Winter Park from early 2016 to August 2018 to determine whether planes were

dipping closer to the ground.

The results suggest the flights passing over Winter Park may not be particularly louder or lower — the planes had an average height of 3,000 feet with only a 50-foot variance. But what changed is the frequency of those arriving flights.

What’s more, the state’s various flight patterns and levels of air traffic are dictated by the Federal Aviation Administration and haven’t changed in recent years.

Starting in 2019, the FAA, in collaboration with the GOAA, will continue work on the NextGen initiative — a comprehensive set of new procedures meant to modernize the country’s airspace navigation system. Rather than ground-based navigation, airports will switch to satellite technology to create more direct air routes and more efficient climb/descent methods.

One new procedure of particular interest to Winter Park residents is the Metroplex redesign plan, an effort to rework technology and procedures that impact where and how the planes fly. Although there are 11 Metroplexes across the country, Florida’s air space has yet to be redesigned.

Not only is Florida tricky geographically because of its peninsula shape, but also there are numerous military bases that line the east and west coasts of Florida — along with the Kennedy Space Center — that have thousands of feet of

restricted airspace. That can lead to more flights traveling certain air routes, one of which travels over Winter Park.

“Everywhere else they’re looking at one, maybe two airports trying to figure out the traffic, Florida has four of the top busiest airports in the country,” Jarrette said.

Early next year, the FAA will begin a series of public outreach open houses at local high schools and community centers to get feedback from residents before working on the redesign. Jarrette said both the FAA and GOAA are aware of complaints from communities such as Winter Park and will host sessions in the Greater Orlando area to specifically discuss MCO and Orlando Executive Airport traffic routes. “(Winter Park residents) will be able to speak with the people who control the aircraft and who design the traffic routes,” Jarrette said. “It’s an ideal opportunity, and we’re very excited to help the FAA get the word out. … It’s a complex procedure to redesign airspace.”

It will be a lengthy endeavor. The entire Metroplex process — which will consist of outreach, gathering and analyzing feedback, an environmental assessment and more — will take about 18 months alone, according to Jarrette. In the meantime, she encourages residents to contact the GOAA noise hotline or to email her to file a noise complaint.

There is also a GOAA noiseabatement committee — which includes a Winter Park representative — that hosts meetings every three months, is open to the public and encourages feedback.

ed destination in the nation,” Jarrette said. “The other thing is that while operations have increased at Orlando, what has really increased dramatically is the number of passengers coming each year. Airlines are flying larger and larger aircraft.”

The airlines’ passenger-boosting “up-gauging” strategy leads to larger aircraft flying overhead and sometimes gives the appearance of lower flight paths, Jarrette said.

Furthermore, the city often is beneath both north-to-south traffic from MCO and northeast-tosouthwest traffic from the Orlando Executive airport. Orlando Executive planes also have to be lower to the ground to avoid MCO traffic.

The MCO averaged around 868 daily flights in August 2017, but that number increased to more than 1,000 daily flights a year later.

The MCO’s arrival and departure schedules also have intensified, with flights beginning to leave earlier and arrive later.

The state also has four of the core 30 airports in the United States and is part of the busiest aviation corridor in the country.

On top of that, the Orlando International Airport is the busiest airport in the state, with more than 350,000 operations within the last 12 months, according to Jarrette.

Arriving flights to MCO must travel across Orlando Executive Airport either at 2,200 feet or 2,400 feet.

Back in contention Trinity Preparatory School is once again eligible for football playoffs next year after a three-year postseason ban was appealed.

ostseason football is back at Trinity Pre-

paratory School — thanks to a successful appeal of a three-year postseason ban. Now that the varsity football squad once again has a shot at the playoffs next season, the Saints are ready to make a run.

The ban can be traced back to a series of injuries the team suffered at the start of the year, Athletic Director and Defensive Coordinator David Langdon said.

Trinity Prep had hopes to build off a successful 2017 season that ended with a record of 7-2.

“We came into the season after having a successful season the year before thinking we had a chance to be pretty good,” Langdon said.

“We thought we had a chance to make a little run in the playoffs.

Unfortunately with a school this size, when you have injuries that can really hurt you. In my 31 years as a coach on the sideline, I don’t know if I’ve had a crazier year of injuries.”

With a home game against Frostproof Middle-Senior High School approaching Sept. 7, 2018, the Saints realized they were missing 16 players because of injury and sickness.

Trinity Prep was left with several of its smaller, younger players — and a decision had to be made about safety, Langdon said.

“We got a situation where we were playing some very young kids, and we were about to play a very mature team,” Langdon said.

“We feel that football is a very, very safe game, but at the same time, there’s a physical maturity level difference between some

kids. We would have been forced to put in some younger kids that we may not have put in that type of competition, so we felt it was best that we didn’t play the game.

“We said, ‘There’s no way. We’re not going to put our kids in this situation,’” he said. “You got a kid who’s played one year and weighs 137 pounds, and you’re going to put him up against a 280 kid? No.” The Trinity Prep coaching staff knew the consequences they would face for not playing the game. After a technical forfeit, the school was slapped with a threeyear postseason ban by the FHSAA Sept. 13.

“We knew there was a rule that said there was a chance of us being suspended, but we felt like we had a great argument for appeal,” Langdon said. “Even if they said we wouldn’t have won the appeal, I still felt like that was the right decision to make. This was a decision by a group of experts. … Our upper administration agreed, and so we went on with it.”

The school filed its appeal 10 days after the ban and made its case before a panel Oct. 24.

“A lot of times, it doesn’t go well for people who go through appeals with FHSAA,” Langdon said. “With a unanimous vote, we won our appeals, and we are eligible for playoffs without penalty after this year.”

The official ruling lifted the postseason ban for the 2019/2020 season and the 2020/2021 season.

The ban on this year’s football season was upheld, but the team already had been mathematically eliminated from the postseason at the time of the appeal hearing, Langdon said.

A SHOT AT SCHOOL HISTORY

The Saints are excited to have that appeal process behind them and a new season on the horizon. They hope to bounce back from this season’s 2-8 record.

“I think a lot of us — the younger players — had to step up more than we usually play, because we didn’t have a lot of seniors to begin with,” junior Austin Ohlwiler said.

“We got a year of experience even though we didn’t get to go to the

playoffs last year. We’re kind of more mature than we were last year.”

“We need to get better in everything every day,” Langdon said. “A lot of the times, we’re speed challenged compared to people we play — that means we have to do a lot of other things differently.”

Offense still has been a great strength of the Saints in recent years because of head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kruczek, formerly the head coach for the University of Central Florida and the former offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals.

The Trinity Prep coach also won two Super Bowls as a player with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1978 and 1979.

The players’ ability to adapt has been the key as well, Langdon said.

“Our kids being as bright as they are allow us to do some things that we do — even they don’t realize how much they do it sometimes,” he said.

Langdon said one of the biggest goals for the team going into next season will be finding its next quarterback. The team also faces a major challenge as a small private school: participation. The roster for next year as of December would have 24 players.

“We feel like we have a good nucleus — our issue is coming with problems that a lot of other smaller schools have,” he said.

“We’re trying to be creative with other schools on how to keep kids

involved. For example, rightfully so, there’s a lot of (families) that don’t want their kids going into a middle-school football program in eighth grade, going into ninth grade and playing against kids that are up to four years older than them. … We’re working with other schools in the Greater Orlando area that maybe have a sixth-grade flag football team going into a middleschool-type league, where you have eighth- and ninth-graders playing together and then you have the high school.”

The Saints are craving a chance to turn the program around and make history. Trinity Prep finished as the state runner-up in 1971 and 1977 but hasn’t won a district championship since.

“It was a relief to get the ban taken away, because now we can go into next season looking forward to playing in the playoffs, where if we didn’t have it we might not go as hard,” junior Max Holler said.

“It would be really cool to make your mark on the school’s history and have your own banner up there, so every time you come back when you’re an alumni, you get to see your year up there. ‘I was a part of that. We made that history with the school.’”
