2019 FORECAST
Oakland Nature Preserve is the latest recipient of support from the Disney Conservation Fund for its work to restore sandhill habitats and protect the threatened gopher tortoise. ONP will receive $50,000 over two years. The sandhill restoration project not only includes land restoration but also the scientific study of animal diversity found within the sandhill community. Community volunteers will have the opportunity to plant native flora, work as citizen scientists and watch as the areas change over time. “Sandhill restoration at the Oakland Nature Preserve is made possible by the committed, knowledgeable, passionate volunteers that come every week and get their hands dirty,” said Jennifer Hunt, ONP managing director. “The funds granted to the preserve by the Disney Conservation Fund will assist us in expanding the sandhill restoration areas, allowing the threatened gopher tortoise to flourish even further.”
