WHO WE ARE…

WORTH SOCIETY is Worth School’s alumni association, established to enable former pupils (known as Old Worthians) and staff to stay in touch with one another for business and social networking purposes, to provide lifelong guidance and support, and to nurture mutually beneficial relationships with the School, Abbey and the wider Worth community.

The Old Worthian partner kindly offered me a one-year placement position as a paralegal. This is a life-changing opportunity for me, enabling me to fulfil a career in law and provide me with an advantage in securing a legal position after my final year of university. I will be eternally grateful for my education at Worth and the continued support provided through Worth Society."

NETWORKING & CAREERS

Worth Society works with the School to prepare leavers for the transition to university through a series of relevant talks in Year 13. Recent leavers are also able to connect with other alumni attending their university, and beyond, through the Worth Connecting platform.

When it comes to careers support, all members of Worth Society can benefit from the expertise of the Worth community. The Society’s network of Worthian professionals, including parents (both past and present), help current Worth students and young alumni with a whole range of careers support, networking and mentoring links. The Worthian network has been fantastically responsive in offering work placements to current students, providing speakers for lectures and the Sixth Form Careers Fair held annually at the School, as well as attending our careers networking events in London to offer targeted careers advice.

As corny as it may sound, my work experience with the Disney Coporation was quite possibly one of the best times of my life, and without Worth Society something that would never have happened. I would encourage students and alumni to use Worth Society to your advantage as much as you can as you really do not know where it will lead you and who you will meet." Jenny

I am so grateful to Worth Society for my work experience and for consistently doing the most to ensure recent Worth graduates find suitable work experience and internships to help them on their professional journey. We really are lucky to have it.

Since leaving Worth I have been in regular contact with Worth Society regarding work experience. Despite going into my last year at university, I am still unsure what I want to do. I asked Worth Society for help with contacts in industries such as marketing, advertising and insurance as these are areas that I am keen to find out more about. I am grateful to have received offers of work experience placements from all three industries, which demonstrates the strength of the Worthian network."

SOCIAL SCENE

Worth Society runs an ever-expanding series of events for Old Worthians to catch-up, meet new people and network socially and for business purposes. Our career focused events include professional lunches and careers networking events in the City of London. The Society also hosts an annual carol service, various dinners, receptions and decade reunions in London as well as events back at Worth. We have also developed a programme of regular gatherings in Sydney, Hong Kong, Munich and other cities around the world.

Thank you very much for organising such a wonderful Christmas Carol Service last night, it was brilliant to catch up with old school friends and get into the festive spirit!!" Mia StM’13

"

A special thank you goes to Worth Society for helping to co-ordinate and chase up some of the long lost boys, as well as getting the party started with a contribution. Cheers!"

Tom G’88 (30 Year Reunion)

The School and the Abbey Church looked and felt absolutely stunning, and all the students looked happy, focused and engaged. So, thank you for inviting me, for having me, and for providing such a genuinely lovely day!"

Jonathan R’70 (50 Year Reunion Lunch)

I want to thank you for organising such a rip roaring evening last week. The most fun I’ve had in ages. It was an admirable feat of organisation.

I know everyone I was with thought the same. Tremendous fun."

Giles B’82 (1980s Decade Reunion Dinner)

Seeing Worth again was the highlight of my summer, and being able to give a proper farewell to where I had grown up and matured for 5 years gave me a great sense of peace. I’m already anticipating the next reunion and to see what the future holds for me, and for Worth."

SPORTING LIFE

Worth Society supports a whole range of sports clubs, for the experienced and less experienced, with fixtures in London, around the country and at Worth. Current clubs include Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Real Tennis, Rugby, Squash and Tennis.

Real Tennis is a sport first enjoyed in the cloisters of a 12th Century monastery – so should chime well with Worthians."

Having joined The Women of Worth (WOW) Netball Team I find it a great way to start the week and catch up with others." Tess StM'11

This truly is a remarkable club and anyone interested in playing some good rugby and meeting old friends should not hesitate to join."

GLOBAL ACTION AWARDS

Worth Society’s Global Action Award (GAA) programme was established in 2000 as a bursary fund for voluntary work post-Worth. Students in their final year at the School can apply for a GAA if they are planning to undertake any form of voluntary work, through a recognised charity, during their gap year; but the awards are available to alumni at any time of their life wishing to spend some time in unpaid work for the good of people, the community or the environment, either at home or abroad.

My GAA project changed my perspective on life and made me so grateful for the chance to help these communities - I will never forget the people I met. I would urge any gap year students thinking of voluntary work to apply for the award."

Pia StM’21 - Teaching English in Nepal

My 6 week medical placement flew by and I thoroughly enjoyed and greatly valued the clinical experience I gained."

SPIRITUAL LINKS

Old Worthians are most welcome to come back at any time and join the School and the Monastic Community in worship in the Abbey Church.

Worth Society holds its own annual carol service in London and also organises a Mass & supper to celebrate key anniversaries.

Volunteering changes you, and it was truly the most wonderful experience of my life."

Stephen C’18, VSO in Tanzania

"

One of the most important lessons I learned whilst away was the universality of a smile…"

Sophia StA’18 - Building a school in Costa Rica

The Society works closely with the Worth Abbey Pilgrims group to connect alumni with a series of events back here at Worth. The Open Cloister retreat programme also offers an extensive programme of residential retreats for young people and families from all faiths.
