For many, rich ore bodies lie just out of reach It’s estimated that by 2050, 50 per cent of the world’s copper will come from underground operations. When you’re going down 1,000 metres below surface, it takes the right technology and subject matter experts to safely deliver something of this magnitude. These hard to access areas are not easy to design, and very few can claim competence in this space. But for new era brownfield and greenfield copper mining projects, we are well positioned to lead.

Automating the world’s largest underground mine

To keep its mine operational for the next 50 years, we helped Codelco access a new deposit by using new technologies and selecting the mine infrastructure. Automation and remote operations were built into the design of the expansion, as well as ondemand mine ventilation for energy efficiency. Once operational, the mine will be managed remotely from a center 60 kilometres away.
We helped Minerna Chinalco deliver its first open pit mine, Toromocho, in South America. We completed the feasibility study and provided full engineering, procurement and construction management services, and ore processing at an anticipated rate of 117,200 tons per day to produce copper concentrates. The mine is one of Peru’s largest copper mines, producing 225,000 tons of copper annually.

Using innovative technology to plan Papua New Guinea’s biggest underground mine

Wafi Golpu is a proposed underground block caving copper-gold development, operating over three lifts for the life of mine.
Providing conceptual engineering services, we helped Codelco identify, study and analyze principal alternatives for ore extraction and handling in their new underground mine. We studied two options, including panel caving and block caving. Our studies identified an optimal mining rate of 140,000 tonnes per day, making the development one of the world’s largest underground mining operations. We also led the development of both the materials handling systems and infrastructure design.
We provided the pre-feasibility study and early site establishment services for the surface and underground infrastructure, extracting 30 million metric tonnes per annum of ore. We used SmartPlant design technology, rapid prototyping and building information modeling (BIM) to create a digital-project-design platform that efficiently and cost effectively prepares Newcrest Mining and Harmony for project execution.
