Hydrogen Global overview

Is hydrogen a piece of your future energy puzzle? The Paris Agreement strengthened our commitment to limit the planet’s temperature increase to 1.5°C. Heavy industry contributes approximately 80% of global emissions, and the world is looking to them for a response. Electrification, renewable energy and energy storage will get us part of the way. However, even with a rapid deployment of solar and wind, electrification can’t do everything. In fact, it’s likely to meet about half of our expected final energy usage. We need something else to fill that gap. Enter low-carbon hydrogen.

02 Experience

Increasing the scale of hydrogen production Building a carbon-free Netherlands We helped develop and operate a 20MW electrolysis plant using green electricity from offshore wind. The green hydrogen will be combined with carbon dioxide to produce bio-methanol. Our team provided the technical and infrastructure work packages. What started off as an overall feasibility study is now a FEED project into implementation.

11

The single largest electrolyzer facility in Europe Technical consultancy Having strong partnership with electrolyzer manufacturers and the European renewables industry meant that we could help our customer develop a 760MW offshore wind farm and a 100MW hydrogen electrolyzer facility.

12

Developing a large-scale 36GW power to gas plant We provided technical evaluation and conceptual design so power can be produced from offshore wind farms. The hydrogen generated is then compressed for transportation by pipeline to shore or stored in offshore salt caverns or depleted gas fields.

13

Investigating possibilities An artificial island in the Netherlands Feasibility study on multiple options to expand and transition existing gas infrastructure. The power to hydrogen energy conversion means it can serve as an energy carrier, fuel for transport, raw material for the industry and a substitute for the natural gas used in the local area.

14

Fuelling cleaner refinery operations with a 10MW hydrogen electrolyzer – the world’s largest Once operational, the facility will produce approximately 1,300 tonnes of hydrogen per year. Typically, hydrogen is produced as a test but now it will be used for the industrial process. We provided technical and non-technical services for the project that fully integrates the refinery processes including desulphurisation of conventional fuels.

15

Reviewing international demand and production for hydrogen Oil to hydrogen competitor's study We performed a comprehensive techno-economic study of future demand including production pathways based on various feedstocks and blue and green hydrogen processes. We also assessed green hydrogen carriers to understand the full cost of hydrogen production to its end usage. We provided projections for hydrogen quantities required under various climate action scenarios.

16

Using green hydrogen to produce ammonia and commercializing renewable hydrogen production We’re working with Queensland Nitrates Pty Ltd (QNP) who manufacture ammonium nitrate, to determine the feasibility of producing green hydrogen at commercial scale. This study was undertaken in conjunction with Neoen, who will supply electricity from large wind and solar generation. These projects are aimed at commercializing new green hydrogenbased products, as steps towards decarbonizing some of the highest emissions industries.

17

Largest co-located wind, solar, battery and hydrogen production facility in the world Producing up to 25,000kg of hydrogen per day Providing technical and financial analysis to determine a business case for the production, storage and transportation of green hydrogen in APAC. It included cost estimates for the key electrolysis technology blocks and balance of plant. It then considered a range of options for capacity, output and end use.

18

100MW green hydrogen plant utilizing offshore wind

Working with UK clusters to deliver a more sustainable world We are helping Gigastack consortium member Phillips 66 by performing the engineering for a 100MW green hydrogen plant in the UK. Our scope includes: •

desalination / water treatment to produce ultra-pure water feedstock

•

integration of electricity supply from Ørsted’s Hornsea 2 windfarm

•

integration of the 100MW electrolyzer (ITM Power)

•

design of the balance of plant and infrastructure

•

integration of the green hydrogen into the Phillips 66 Humber refinery as part of a decarbonization strategy

Producing green hydrogen to decarbonize methanol production Nouryon and Gasunie New Energy are looking to develop and operate a 20MW water electrolysis plant in Delfzijl. Using green electricity from offshore wind, green hydrogen will be produced through water electrolysis. As a renewable feedstock to Delfzijl's BioMCN plant, the green hydrogen will be combined with CO2 from other processes to produce bio-methanol.

Producing green hydrogen (20MW) to decarbonize methanol production Combining renewable hydrogen with CO2 to produce renewable methanol Our customer is looking to develop and operate a 20MW water electrolysis plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Using sustainable electricity from offshore wind, the electrolyzer will split water molecules into oxygen and 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen every year. The low-carbon hydrogen will be combined with CO2 captured from other processes to produce renewable methanol. Compared to fossil-based methanol, this will reduce 27,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. The project scope includes the electrolyzer package unit, buildings, infrastructure, utilities (BIU), and the hydrogen distribution system / “Openbare Waterstof Infrastructuur” (OWI). We completed the feasibility study of the project as well as the front-end engineering design package.

22

Scaling-up green hydrogen production (50MW) at a chemical park Increasing the scale of hydrogen production to produce sustainable jet fuel We are supporting our customer on the development of a 50MW electrolyzer at a chemical park in the Netherlands to produce green hydrogen. The green hydrogen – a feedstock for the chemical park's future sustainable jet fuel plant (SAF) – will be combined with waste and residue streams such as cooking oil to produce SAF. Our scope includes the feasibility and concept study of the 6,000 to 10,000 tonnes per year green hydrogen development.

23

From green hydrogen to ammonia nitrate

When constructed, it will be one of the first commercial-scale green hydrogen to ammonia facilities in the world. The aim of this study is to determine the viability of producing green hydrogen at commercial scale at QNP’s existing manufacturing plant in Queensland, Australia, to feed a new ammonia plant, which in turn is fed into an existing ammonium nitrate chemical facility. When the hydrogen is fed into the new ammonia plant, it will produce 20,000 tonnes of ammonia every year from 3,600 tonnes of green hydrogen. The proposed plant would produce 20 percent of the ammonia used by QNP which is currently purchased from third parties. This project feasibility is being undertaken in conjunction with Neoen, who will supply electricity from a large wind, solar or battery hybrid farm.
