CIRAMET® Sulphuric Acid Plant Equipment

CIRAMET® austenitic stainless steels are a family of special steels whose use has been developed for the critical components of Worley Chemetics Anodically Protected Seawater Sulphuric Acid Coolers.

Developed from the extensive operating experience gained from our seawater acid coolers in service since 1971 and exhaustive in-house testing and ongoing pilot plant projects, the specifications for CIRAMET® alloys have produced a family of materials custom designed for the critical seawater cooling applications. Manufactured by the latest steel making processes, the chemistry of the alloys has been tailored to Worley Chemetics’ exacting specifications to optimize pitting & crevice corrosion performance characteristics required for this most severe service while retaining the required corrosion performance in hot sulphuric acid.

CIRAMET® tubing is manufactured from strip which is converted on a state of the art automatic welding line where frequent stringent quality control checks and regular production sampling, performed at every stage of the process, ensure a finished product of the highest possible quality. The weld in the tubing is mechanically worked prior to carefully controlled annealing and finishing operations. This series of exacting procedures, all carried out under the strictest quality control standards, assures the virtual elimination of defects while producing a bore finish of superior quality.

All tubes are 100% eddy current and underwater air tested before visual and strict corrosion tests are performed. Only then are the tubes qualified for use in Worley Chemetics Seawater Acid Coolers.

The combination of our exacting specifications, advanced heat exchanger design techniques, specially developed fabrication procedures and intensive quality control procedures result in a high quality acid cooler capable of withstanding the severe service of cooling hot acid with salt water. Over 135 Worley Chemetics Seawater Cooled Sulphuric Acid Coolers are currently in service in over 15 countries around the world.

The most critical component of a seawater acid cooler is the tubing which is required to operate at elevated metal temperatures. For this severe service, we developed proprietary tubing specifications which far exceed those of regular commercially produced tubing.
