Floor Art Kolam is a tradition al art form from Tam This creative and il Nadu. rather spectacular skill lies with the women and it is lea rnt and passed do wn through the generations. Typ ically a woman wo uld arise early whilst everything is quiet during a time called Brahm Mahurta and after a washing and gettin g dressed she would go to clean the threshold of he r Here she will put house. a Kolam which is a decorative pattern made of rice powder. Simple kolams wil l be done on a da ily basis which might just take a few minutes where as on special occasions and fes tivals much bigge r more elaborate colourful kolams will be made. So many patterns wil be learnt and oft l en memorised so there is the bene to the memory as fit well as mathema tical skill to work out the various pa tterns and pictur es made out of the grids of dots. The rice powder used feeds the little creatures so that they hopefully sta y out of the kitch and since the Ko en lam is on the doors tep it gets walked through during the day often so that the Kolam can’t be seen anymore . This creates the quality of non-attachment since with a Kolam you create something beautifu l but don’t get att ached to its beauty for it slowly gets destroyed an d then cleaned up the fol lowing morning. It is said that the Kolam is created to invite the deity Lakshmi into your home. Should yo u not put a Kolam outside your house and she happened to be walking by then she would not come in besto wing those who live there wit h health and prospe rity.
Family Area terms and conditions The Children’s Tent is suitable from birth up to approximately age 12. Children must not be left unattended. The Teen Tent is aimed at senior school age children. All children/teens must be wristbanded with their parent/guardian’s contact number. We cannot accept responsibility for children participating without parental supervision. We cannot accept responsibility for belongings (although we usually have a lost property box at end of day). We cannot accompany children to the toilets so please bear this in mind. No food or drink is to be consumed in the workshop space. Please note that there may be photography/videography within the Family Area.
