Terminology The world of creative design and printing is full of jargon, abbreviations and terminology that our customers often come across. We’ve defined some of the most popular ones to help you.

Alteration: Change in copy or layout after initial production has begun.

Bleed: Artwork that runs at least 2mm over edge of the page to ensure accurate page trimming.

CMYK: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (Black being the Key colour). Also known as four colour process printing. A printing process which combines these four ink colours to produce a full colour image.

Copy: All supplied material (e.g. text or images) used in the production of the artwork or printed product.

Crop Marks: Small printed lines around the edges of a printed job indicating where it is to be trimmed. Sometimes referred to as cut marks.

Die Cut: To cut irregular shapes in paper or paperboard using a die.

Digital Printing: A printing process where a digital image is printed directly onto the paper without the need for printing plates, most commonly via Inkjet or Laser printers.

Gloss: Shiny high lustre finish.

High Definition Printing: Our high definition printing uses more dots per square mm than the industry standard, like a high definition TV the greater number of dots gives you a sharper image.

Laminating: A thin transparent plastic coating applied to paper or board to provide protection and give it a high gloss or matt finish.

Matt: Flat low sheen finish.

Mock Up: The preliminary assemblage of copy and artwork elements to be reproduced in the desired finished product, also called a comp or dummy.

Offset Printing: A printing process where a ‘plate’ makes an inked impression on a ‘blanketed’ cylinder, which in turn transfers the image to the paper.

Overrun: Copies printed in excess of the quantity ordered. Often used for samples or used as make ready sheets for the following finishing process.

Perfect Bound: A type of binding that glues the edge of sheets to the cover spine. Usually used on quality magazines or annual reports.

PMS: Pantone© Matching System. A standard ink and colour reference system used globally by the printing industry.

Press-ready Artwork: An artwork file that has been set up to the printer’s specifications and is ready for print.

Saddle Stitch: Binding a booklet or magazine by using staples in the folds.

Seal: A clear varnish or coating used to seal the ink and protect the printed page. Available in gloss or matt finishes.

Spot UV: Used to enhance a specific element of the design or to create background effects by overprinting a super glossy clear varnish over the printed page.
