Welcome President of the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2010 I am both delighted and honoured to welcome you to the climax of the World Travel Awards Grand Tour 2010 – our 17th Grand Final Gala Ceremony.

Tonight represents the culmination of a year-long search to find the world’s leading travel brands, covering seven continents and featuring more than 5,000 nominees across 700 categories. Now the competition has been whittled down to the elite few – the winners from each of our five regional ceremonies.

This year alone, the number of self nominations has risen a phenomenal 50 percent from 2009. This reflects how the World Travel Awards has become recognised globally – by both the trade and the consumer – as the Oscars of the travel industry.

This evening is all about celebrating the phenomenal achievements of the very best in our business, and it is humbling to have gathered under one roof such a pool of talent.

Our industry is under no illusions that 2010 has been one of the toughest on record. Yet these turbulent times have also seen the true leaders of travel turn adversity into opportunity. And tonight’s winners all share this vision, entrepreneurial spirit and inner strength to succeed.

Welcome Visit Britain Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2010 Welcome to the World Travel Awards Grand Final. It is fantastic that Britain once again is hosting this prestigious annual event in one of the most vibrant, dynamic and fascinating cities in the world.

Coming as the world arrives in London to take part in the World Travel Market, we celebrate the best in British tourism.

Tourism represents a £115 billion industry that is vital to the wellbeing of our economy, supporting 2.6 million jobs and 200,000 small businesses in the UK. Tourism is central to this country’s efforts to help reduce the deficit and emerge in good shape from these tough economic times.

In reality, exploring all that Britain has to offer has never been more affordable. As anyone who has spent time with us will know, our destinations offer world-class service and quality assured, ‘star-rated’ accommodation for every budget. We have a range of enviable tourism assets,

We offer an unrivalled social season and a calendar of unbeatable events. In less than two years time the eyes of the world will be on London for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

But they are not the only games in town over the coming years. The 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales recently kicked off what could be a really exciting decade of sport in Britain. Other events to look forward to are the 2014 Commonwealth Games in

Glasgow, the 2016 Rugby World Cup in England, and hopefully the FIFA 2018 World Cup! As well as celebrating our sporting heritage and drawing visitors to some of the world’s greatest ‘cathedrals of sport’, events will get Britain on the wish list of potential travellers who have no historical ties to Britain. We have an unprecedented opportunity to deliver a world-class welcome to all visitors and thereby to enhance the image of the UK as a truly inspirational visitor destination.

About Us World Travel Awards

The World Travel Awards acknowledges and celebrates those organisations that have made the greatest contribution to the global tourism and travel industry. It also recognises those brands that are driving the industry to greater heights and innovation in travel.

Celebrating its 17th anniversary this year, the awards has grown into a truly global search for the very best travel and tourism brands, with the winners from the five regional ceremonies progressing to the World Travel Awards Grand Final in London on 7 November.

Last year, 183,000 travel professionals registered to vote and participate in the prestigious World Travel Awards programme – a phenomenal 10% rise in registrations compared to the year before.

This record number is conclusive evidence that World Travel Awards has become the “Oscars” of the global travel industry.

The World Travel Awards has continuously evolved, expanding the number of awards as the industry has grown. There are now over 1,000 different categories – an understandable number seeing how the industry has diversified and given the fact that there were over 3,600 different nominees last year.

This year’s prestigious event was held at Sandton Convention Centre, located in ‘The City of Gold’, Johannesburg, South Africa.

CEO’s, directors of leading travel companies, Government Ministers, heads of tourism departments and destinations, industry association leaders and celebrities gathered for Africa’s most important industry evening.

VIP’s included: Hon. Tokozile Xasa, South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Tourism; Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, the Hon. Commissioner, Lagos State Delegation; Mr. Kenneth Racombo, First Secretary at the Seychelles High Commission; Mr. Mansoor Mohamed, Executive Director of the City of Cape Town; and Ms. Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism.

The biggest applause of the night was saved for Dr. Aupindi Tobie Aupindi, Managing Director of the fast-expanding Namibia Wildlife Resorts, named Africa’s prestigious Tourism Personality of the Year.

Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony The Claridges, Surajkund, Delhi, NCR 14 October 2010 As the XIX Commonwealth Games drew to a close, India also stole the show at this year’s World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia Ceremony held in Delhi on Thursday 14 October.

The industry’s elite – including CEOs and directors of leading travel companies, government ministers and tourist board chiefs – all gathered to see who would be crowned the ‘best of the best’ during the most important evening of the year in the Asian travel and tourism calendar.

India proved its credentials as a top travel destination, taking away the title of “Asia’s Leading Destination”. Other big wins for the region included “Asia’s Leading Hotel” and “Asia’s Leading Luxury Hotel” for the Trident Gurgaon; “Asia’s Leading Resort” for The Leela Kempinski Kovalam Beach Kerala; Oberoi
