Now fully recovered from the impact of Hurricane Irma in 2017, the tourism sector in the Bahamas has also been celebrating. Visitor figures have continued to increase, with 2018 marking a record-breaking year for cruise ship and stopover arrivals to the destination. By the end of 2018, foreign air and sea arrivals totalled more than 6.6 million visitors, a huge increase from the 6.1 million recorded in 2017. Stopover visitors alone had increased 16.7 per cent in 2018, as compared to 2017, and Freeport saw a surge of sea visitors by 49 per cent. This, of course, helps drive the economy. The Nassau and Paradise Island hotel industry reported a year-on-year spike
in average daily room rates and revenue per available room in 2018. The year ended with room revenues up 34 per cent, gains not seen in the past ten years. With figures for 2019 expected to be released during Caribbean Travel Marketplace, further increases can be expected. Tonight is the first event on our annual Grand Tour - a series of regional events to celebrate the world’s outstanding travel brands, covering six continents and featuring over 9,000 nominees. While we are still putting the finishing touches to the year ahead, I can reveal we will be heading to Cornelia Diamond Golf Resort & Spa in Antalya, Turkey, for the Europe Gala Ceremony, while Seoul, capital of South Korea, is poised to welcome the Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony. World Travel Awards will return to Kenya for the Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony in October, with Thompson Okanagan, in British Columbia, Canada, set to welcome the inaugural North America Gala Ceremony later the same month. Winners from each of these regional events will proceed to the Grand Final 2020, this year taking place in Moscow. The event will take place on
November 27th and I hope to see many of you in Russia for the show. Each year our locations, categories, nominees and, most importantly, the number of voting travel professionals increases exponentially, revealing the tremendous public demand for the recommendation a World Travel Award signifies. The recognition we offer is one of a kind, as no other organisation has the experience, the gravitas, or the loyal following of more than half of a million travel, tourism and hospitality professionals we possess. As the most tourism dependant region anywhere on earth, there is always plent y happening in the Caribbean hospitalit y sector. Here Breaking Travel News brings you the latest. Of course, the hot topic in the region at present is the upcoming Caribbean Travel Marketplace which continues to generate lots of buzz and excitement. Frank Comito, chief executive of the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association, recently reported that the largest and longest-standing tourism marketing event in the region had to date confirmed close to 500 delegates from more than 170 supplier companies. “Based on the registration pace we are witnessing, we expect to see a continuing surge in delegate numbers over the next several weeks as hotel and destination representatives, tour-

ism providers, wholesalers and tour operators, online travel agencies, and members of the media prepare for the premier Caribbean onestop travel trade event in the Bahamas,” said Comito. The CHTA meetup is a collaboration with local partners Baha Mar, the Bahamas Hotel & Tourism Association, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, and the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board. Caribbean Travel Marketplace will be held at Baha Mar’s Performing Arts & Convention Centre, at one of the newest and most impressive

resorts in the Caribbean. Comito also noted a strong interest in buyer delegates with over 80 buyer companies so far registered for the meetings. They include 191 representatives from Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Panama, Portugal, Puerto Rico, The Russian Federation, Spain, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. “We believe buyers from around the world are looking forward to not just reviewing the
incredible investments taking place in the host destination, but also meeting with representatives from longstanding Caribbean hotels and resorts, as well as the unprecedented number of new and refurbished properties which have recently unveiled their offerings,” he said. Caribbean Travel Marketplace will take place in the Bahamas between January 21st-23rd.
ANTIGUA & BARBUDA Antigua & Barbuda is also making waves, with the destination having welcomed more than 300,000 visitors during 2019, leading to celebrations among officials from the tourism board at V.C. Bird International Airport. It was a festive afternoon, as masquerades and dancers in colourful costumes begun celebrating on the bandstand and greeting passengers in an extravagant cultural display. Antigua minister of tourism, Charles Fernandez, minister of state in the ministry of tourism, Mary-Clare Hurst, chairman of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, Lorraine Raeburn, general manager of Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa, Matthew Cornall, and other
airport and tourism officials awaited the announcement. “We have seen incredible year-over-year growth every month this year so far,” said Fernandez during the reception. Almost every key market is seeing incredible growth, in particular the US, Caribbean and the UK. These markets have all contributed to the double digit increase in stayover air arrivals that we are celebrating this year.” The minister noted that November figures showed the largest monthly double-digit increase ever, with nearly 30,000 stays recorded, up 31 per cent on last year. In 2015, the government of Antigua & Barbuda transformed the V.C. Bird In-
ternational Airport, opening a modern terminal, with increased capacity, faster passenger processing times and enhanced facilities to meet a strategic growth plan for tourism.
M A R R I OT T Finally, Marriott has signed contracts with hotel developers to open two all-inclusive, oceanfront resorts in the Caribbean - an 800-room Marriott Hotel in Jamaica and a 283-room Autograph Collection on Curaçao. The 800-room Marriott Hotel Al Amaterra is planned on a beachfront site within the Amaterra Resort, a mixed-use development along the north coast of Trelawney, Jamaica. The site features about three miles of pristine beachfront. The hotel’s owner, Amaterra Group, expects to commence construction in early 2020. In Curaçao, Marriott International signed an agreement to open a 283-room Autograph Collection resort on an oceanfront site, marking its first contract for a franchised all-inclusive resort.

As World Travel Awards arrives in the Bahamas for the Caribbean Gala Ceremony 2020, we here take a look at some of the biggest headlines from this paradise destination Offshore, MSC Cruises recently welcomed the very first guests to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, its new private island destination in the Bahamas. As part of a multi-faceted restoration strategy, the company has transformed the island from what once was an industrial sand excavation site into a tropical destination. MSC Cruises has worked with environmental engineers and other experts to revitalise the surrounding ocean beds, marine life and endangered coral.

The environmentally-sound development of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is a unique feat and it took nearly three years to complete an island destination capable of delivering the best possible guest experience as well as meeting the Company’s uniquely ambitious environmental targets. Some 7,500 tons of scrap metal were removed and throughout the clean-up process, a team of expert divers and marine biologists carefully removed individual hard coral colonies from debris on the ocean bed and relocated them to

an approved location outside the construction area. Actions were taken to create a biodiverse and sustainable environment and more than 75,000 plants and shrubs were planted across the island. Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Cruises, said: “Ocean Cay is founded on a deep commitment to ecological principles – beliefs that shape everything from how venues are built, to how the island is run, to
the kinds of activities featured on the island. Having the first guests arrive on the island is a moment of great pride for all of us at MSC Cruises. We wanted to create for our guests something sustainable, with a higher purpose. Ocean Cay is not just a holiday island, it is a unique marine reserve where people and nature thrive in harmony.” In the coming months, MSC Cruises will also introduce a Conservation Centre on the island, which will serve as an active base for coral education and research.
C A R N I VA L Staying with the cruise sector, and Carnival Corporation has signed an agreement with the government of the Bahamas to build two major port developments. Under the agreement, Carnival Corporation will develop a new cruise port destination primarily for Carnival Cruise Line on Grand Bahama, and construction of a new addition, including a pier, on the Bahamian island of Little San Salvador, home to Holland America Line’s Half Moon Cay port.
The Grand Bahama project will represent an investment of over $100 million, and the development on Little San Salvador will be an estimated $80 million investment over time. The agreement was signed at the prime minister’s office in Grand Bahama at a ceremony that included Hubert Minnis, prime minister of the Bahamas. “We are very pleased to announce that Carnival Corporation’s projects in the Bahamas are full speed ahead,” said Minnis. “These developments and the significant investment in world-class tourism and hospitality operations are such a boon for our initiatives for national prosperity and economic stability.”
Once environmental and other permitting processes are completed, construction for both projects is projected to start by mid-2020. The projects are expected to play an important role in the country’s recovery from the recent impact of Hurricane Dorian. As part of the development, Carnival Corporation’s plans include construction parameters that are designed to meet or exceed guidelines for being able to mostly withstand the impact of a category five hurricane. “This is an exciting day for all of us involved with these two extraordinary development projects,” said Giora Israel, senior vice president with Carnival Corporation. “We have been working with the prime minister and his staff for some time with a shared vision for our design plans, and we want to extend our sincere gratitude for their collaboration and partnership. Our collective goal is to maintain the reputation of the Bahamas as one of our most popular and welcoming destinations for years to come, and it is very rewarding to see our joint vision finalised with today’s agreement.”
