This is also a positive time for tourism in Abu Dhabi, with the emirate posting figures showing incredible growth over the last three years. The UAE capital has worked hard to reinforce its position as a destination with remarkable global appeal and as a place destined to become a key cultural city of the future.

Figures released by the Department of Culture & Tourism – Abu Dhabi have shown more than ten million visitors came to experience the UAE capital last year, made up of both day-trippers and overnight guests. The number of hotel guests arriving at one of the emirate’s 168 hotels increased by four per cent last year when compared to 2017.

The United Kingdom remains the largest European source market, registering a six per cent rise from 2017 figures to

more than 277,000 last year.

Tonight is the second event on our annual Grand Tour - a series of regional events to celebrate the world’s outstanding travel brands, covering six continents and featuring over 9,000 nominees. We began 2019 in Jamaica, with Sandals Montego Bay welcoming hundreds of industry leaders to the paradise island in January for the Caribbean & North America Gala Ceremony.

Next, we head to the Mauritius, which will host the Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony on June 1st, before moving on to the Portuguese island of Madeira, which will welcome the Europe Gala Ceremony later the same month. We also have plans to return to Vietnam for the Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony later in the year, while Bolivia has been presented with the honour of hosting the Latin America Gala Ceremony.

Winners from each of these regional events will proceed to the Grand Final 2018, this year taking place at the Royal Opera House in Muscat.

The event will take place on November 28th and I hope to see many of you in Oman for the show.

Each year our locations, categories, nominees and, most importantly, the number of voting travel professionals increases exponentially, revealing the tremendous public demand for the recommendation a World Travel Award signifies. With construction underway at the Red Sea project and Uber making a splash with its latest acquisition, it is an exciting time for tourism in the Middle East.

Here Breaking Travel News brings you the latest The Red Sea Development Company has commenced operations at the base camp of the Red Sea Project, one of the world’s most ambitious tourism developments.

The camp, which is situated on the coastal area near the southern end of the 28,000 square kilometre destination, is the first of numerous enabling works to be carried

out in 2019 to provide the essential infrastructure for the project.

These works will also include temporary

roads, bridge, jetties, utilities, workforce accommodation, and a management village which will support the development of the luxury tourism destination. The camp currently houses 60 people who will live and work on site, including project and construction managers, health safety and environmental professionals, government affairs specialists and others. It includes prayer, dining, gym, and other amenities.

“This is an important milestone for the Red Sea Project and takes us another step closer to our goal of creating a truly exquisite tourism destination on the beautiful Red Sea coast,” said John Pagano, chief executive of the Red Sea Development Company.

“The remote nature of the site, which is an important part of its appeal as a destination, creates logistical challenges for the support of large-scale development. The base camp is an essential first step in preparing the destination for construction.”

One of the first priorities overseen from the camp will be development of the construction village, a residential compound to house the workforce. The first phase of the village will house up to 10,000 people, providing accommodation, amenities, and recreation. The camp will also kick off the Red Sea Development Company’s implementation of comprehensive provisions for worker health and safety.

The management village will, once complete, replace the base camp as the centre of the Red Sea Development Company operations on site and house a wider range of project management and corporate functions. The Red Sea Development Company will also construct a temporary bridge to connect a hub island – the focal point of the Red Sea Project phase one development – to the shore, allowing materials to be transported by road as well as jetties to allow access to the more remote islands.

Careem co-founder and chief executive, Mudassir Sheikha, will lead the Careem business, which will report to its own board made up of three representatives from Uber and two representatives from Careem. Careem and Uber will operate their respective regional services and independent brands.

UBER Ride hailing giant Uber also recently reached a deal to acquire Dubai-based rival Careem for $3.1 billion. The deal consists of $1.7 billion in convertible notes and $1.4 billion in cash and is subject to applicable regulatory approvals.

Uber said it expected the transaction to close early next year.

Uber will acquire all of Careem’s mobility, delivery, and payments businesses across the greater Middle East region, ranging from Morocco to Pakistan, with major markets including Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Upon closing, Careem

ETIHAD Finally, Abu Dhabi flag-carrier Etihad Airways earlier this year flew pope Francis home after a historic threeday visit to the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The trip made history as the first ever visit of a pontiff to the Gulf region.

Leaving on an Etihad Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the pope sought to leave behind a legacy of tolerance and peace.

During his visit, the pontiff joined Ahmed Al Tayeb, grand imam of Al Azhar and chairman of the Muslim

Council of Elders for the Human Fraternity conference, a meeting of some of the world’s most prominent religious leaders with the aim of charting a path for global peace. The crew who flew the Pope home were comprised of 15 different nationalities, representing the cultural diversity at the heart of the Etihad Aviation Group.

Captain Abdulla Obaid, an Emirati pilot with more than 20 years of flying experience led the flight crew.

He said: “I am very proud and thankful to have flown pope Francis to Rome and to be the first Emirati pilot ever to fly the pope. Our country’s leadership are directing us in the way of tolerance and making this country a peaceful country where people of all cultures can come together.”
