Tonight’s event marks the end of our Silver Jubilee Grand Tour. For the past 25 years we have searched the globe for the very best in hospitality and this evening we present to you the cream of the crop from 2018. I am sure you will agree the standard is higher than ever and confirms that our industry is in rude health.

The number of foreigners visiting the Iberian destination rose by nearly 12 per cent last year to a record 12.7 million people, contributing to the country’s strongest economic growth since 2000. Official data revealed earlier this year that tourism and all travel-related revenues account for about ten per cent of the country’s gross domestic product, which expanded 2.7 per cent last year.

Tonight represents the end of a year-long journey for World Travel Awards, with our annual Grand Tour having taken us to the four corners of the earth in search of the elite in international tourism. We can now honour the winners from each of those events, with the leaders among them being recognised as the bestof-the-best. We began the year with the Middle East Gala Ceremony, hosted in partnership with the Ras al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority in the northern most of the United Arab Emirates. This was followed by the Europe

Gala Ceremony, where we were invited to Greece to celebrate in the Zappeion Megaron Hall in capital, Athens. In September we welcomed hundreds of industry leaders to the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong for the Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony, before heading to the Palacio de Cristal in Guayaquil, Ecuador, for the Latin America Gala Ceremony later the same month. More recently we headed to Sandals Montego Bay on the paradise island of Jamaica for the Caribbean & North America Gala Ceremony, before finishing the regional events with the Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony at the Durban International Convention Centre in South Africa. Over 9,000 nominees came before the World Travel Awards voters over the course of 2018, with only a handful being picked in each region. These select few now join us here this evening in Lisbon, with the very best of them taking home the global awards – the highest accolade in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry.

Finally, Vietnam Airlines earlier this year took delivery of its first Airbus A321neo in Hamburg, Germany. The plane is the first of 20 A321neos ordered by the airline. The A321neo is the largest member of the A320 family, with wider aisles and seats, accommodating 203 passengers in a two-class configuration, with eight seats in business and 195 in economy. After being recognised as the World's Leading Cultural Airline by World Travel Awards, Vietnam Airlines has been consistently upgrading its fleet, boasting one of the youngest and most modern in Asia. The arrival of the new fleet is a significant step in the flag carrier’s narrow-body strategy. The chief designer for “fuwa” – the Beijing Olympic mascots - Han surrounds the family with a flock of birds, articulating the notion of returning and being homeward bound. The sculpture is appropriately located within the South Arrival Immigration Hall.

When global actually is global Worldwide business travel spend is expected to reach $1.6 trillion by 2020. As travel spend rises, effective travel management becomes more and more important.

In 2016, half of corporates spending half a million (or more) on travel were contracted with a single Travel Management Company (TMC) for managed travel services worldwide. Single sourcing offers a myriad of benefits to the corporate including visibility of spend, traveller tracking and compliance as well as cost savings. Travel programs became increasingly global in the 2000’s. The proportion of corporates with more than 20 countries in their programs rose from 17% in 2001 to 49% by 2014. This was driven by the same factors that make single sourcing so attractive to travel buyers. TMCs themselves have contributed towards the globalisation of travel by consolidating to grow revenues and to provide services multinationally. Technology has also enabled the big TMCs to offer both online booking tools and a why FCM’s 90+ in-country teams are all fully-trained. Providing a global travel program doesn’t mean a ‘one size fits all’ approach either. Having teams on the ground who understand their local markets, but who have the common technology platform and processes to use that knowledge consistently is the hallmark of a truly global TMC.

Its high cultural value is showcased in fourteen museums that from different perspectives reveal the identity of this city port. Originally designed by Robert Putman in 1971 and subsequently remodelled in 1992 by Arnold Palmer, La Manga Club's South Course was completely refurbished in 2004. The Championship course at La Manga Club, the South, is probably one of the fairest tests of golf one can find. At 6,499 metres from the White Tees, whilst being accepted as a top-calibre championship course, also provides a thorough test both for the scratch player and right across the handicap range. Located in the centre of the valley, with wide palm-fringed fairways and water hazards that come into play on 15 of the 18 holes, the South Course holds few hidden dangers.

An undulating championship course sprawling between palm trees, lakes and 'barrancas'. These natural storm gullies feature on all three golf courses and add an extra dimension to the game. Slightly shorter than the South, with tighter fairways and larger greens, the North Course offers a different, yet no less challenging, round of golf. A feature of the greens, all built to USGA specification, is the amount of movement incorporated in them, none more so than the short Par 3, 2nd, which has three distinct plateaux - a great test of putting. Relying on precision rather than length, an added challenge is provided by the wide variety of water hazards and 'barrancas' that snake their way through the course.

Set amid serene pine woodlands, the West Course's design closely follows the natural contours of the undulating land. Its distinct character makes it a good alternative to the other, more classical championship courses. It is a deceiving course, with frequent changes in elevation with which to contend. The tight front nine demands accurate driving to avoid the 'barrancas' (natural storm gullies) while the back nine, up amongst the hills, is more open but nonetheless challenging.
