Good evening and a warm welcome to the fifth edition of the World Spa Awards, this year being staged here at the exquisite Armani Hotel Dubai. Now firmly established as an icon of hospitality in the Middle East, I can think of no better place to celebrate the best of the wellness industry this evening. It is a privilege to be here tonight and I hope you all enjoy the show we have for you.

The World Spa Awards has been developed in reaction to an overwhelming demand from the spa industry for a programme that was fair and transparent, a programme with a mission to serve as the definitive benchmark of excellence, and to help foster a new era of growth in spa and wellness tourism.

Spa and wellness travel are about making healthy lifestyle choices and maintaining one’s well-being - both physically and mentally. In recent years, an ever-increasing number of people around the world have begun to recognise the importance of wellness – a trend which has seen the value of the industry increase year-on-year.

According to the latest market research, the global wellness market is worth hundreds of billions of dollars and is forecast to grow rapidly over the next few years.

While the beauty and anti-aging segments are by far the largest, constituting around a third, the spa sector is among the fastest growing, and it is the leading lights of this industry we are here to celebrate tonight. The various segments making up the wellness industry are diverse and include, among others, healthy eating and weight loss, fitness, alternative medicine and the spa industry.

GLOBAL WELLNESS TRENDS

With a plethora of new treatments, products and locations entering the global wellness sector each year, it can be diff icult to keep up. Here we bring you the latest f rom the industry Long established as one of the largest trends in the wellness sector, meditation is changing. Considered a key pillar of wellbeing - with the number of practitioners in the United States tripling between 2012-2017 – the sector is diversifying.

Meditation studios, brands and apps are

spawning worldwide, each offering a different route to enlightenment. As a result, meditation is moving from a singular to a plural practice, from a generic concept to specific types, with experts starting to understand differing outcomes. Buddhist, Hindu and Jewish traditions are being

reassessed to meet more specific demands from users across the wellness sector.

At the same time, wellness is becoming more inclusive, with children being encouraged to be active from a young age.

A host of apps have been launched to

teach them about mindfulness, reversing concerns of digital overload for our little ones, while family members club Cloud Twelve in Notting Hill now offers kindness classes for children. Gyms aimed exclusively at children are already in operation, including My Gym in Los Angeles, with the market set to grow further in 2019.

Fighting back against our digital lives has also become more popular this year.

While the battle to live without our phones was long-ago lost, we can at least measure our usage as we seek take back control. In 2019, wellness-focused individuals are trying to cut down on social media usage in order to live more peacefully. Apple, Facebook and Twitter all offer monitoring technology, while apps like Moment and Instagram alert users to when they have exceeded their desired screen time for the day. It is a start in what is likely to be a long battle.

More controversially, CBD has been one of the biggest wellness catchphrases of the past year. Though scientific evidence remains scant – given the dubious legal nature of the substance in some jurisdictions – there is great hope for what can be achieved in this area. Praised for its health benefits, the cannabis-derived oil is popping up everywhere – in health drinks, skincare products, supplements and make up around the world. Retail outlets, including the Body Shop and Dr Bronner, have begun using it in their own-brand products, while Holland & Barrett is stocking it in store. Expect to hear a lot more about this growing trend in coming years.

Finally, and perhaps more significantly for the health of the planet, not just the individual, in the long-term, veganism is the hottest trend of 2019. Long on the periphery, and seen as a somewhat maximalist alternative to vegetarian-

ism, veganism has been a minority within a minority. Indeed, in the United States, less than one per cent of people identify as vegan – but the figure is rising fast. Interest in a way of life in which people eschew not just meat and leather, but all animal products including eggs, wool and silk, is soaring, especially among millennials. In response new companies, including Beyond Meat, and old ones, including McDonald’s and its new McVegan Burgers, are rushing to meet demand. This could be the most long-lasting trend of all.

SPA BREAKS IN DUBAI

As the World Spa Awards prepares to take its bow at Armani Hotel Dubai, we here take a look at the headlines from the wellness sector in the emirate

First up, Anjana Spa at Rixos the Palm Dubai Hotel & Suites has introduced two treatments to its menu. The Coconut Treatment is a 90-minute experience that combines a body polish using a natural coconut blend with coffee grounds and olive oil to prepare the skin for the nourishment as well as a hydrating clay face mask using natural roses and an aromatherapy massage.

At the same time, the Luxury Golden Treatment is a ritual that begins with a gold foam that removes impurities and acts as a gentle cleanser. A bamboo scrub or honey peel comes next to exfoliate and promote cell renewal followed by a gold mask to tighten and illuminate the skin. Finally, a 50-minute massage will be given using 24 karat gold-infused oil.

SOFITEL More scientifically, the Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel is offering guests a chance to explore their genetic makeup during an enlightening stay. Part of the inspiring MGallery by Sofitel Serenity collection, the Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel is an idyllic sanctuary that offers relaxation, tranquillity and

truly memorable moments filled with local flavour. Now the hotel is going that one step further in pursuit of a unique break on the Palm Jumeirah.

The wellbeing resort is offering free state-of-the-art genetics testing in partnership with global genomics company GeneStore.

On arrival at the resort, guests will be given a free genetic test voucher before being asked to give a saliva sample at the Rayya Wellness Centre. Experts will then decode the results and provide personalised recommendations for healthy living, including nutrition tips and wellness treatments. The test is split into four areas, including weight loss management, food intolerance to lactose and gluten, skin care and anti-aging. Guests can take advantage of the offer by heading to the Detox Brunch held at the Vibe restaurant every Saturday.

Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah brought the campaign to life in the Middle East with the introduction of a Jet Lag Guru.

Unique to the property, the complimentary service provides guests with advice on how to combat jet lag and help arrange tailored experiences including a relaxing Neom Tranquillity Bath on arrival and a special Jet Lag Menu at Vietnamese restaurant LAO. Travellers exhausted from long journeys and time zone differences can now book a complimentary personal consultation with an on-property Jet Lag Guru who will advise guests on how to recover from a long-haul travel and make the most of their stay through wellness and fitness initiatives. From setting the perfect room temperature for optimal sleep, talking through the pillow menu at check-in, suggesting healthy in-room dining options and arranging an unpacking service by the hotel team, the Jet Lag Guru is there to ensure guests breeze into holiday mode from moment they arrive.

The Jet Lag Guru can book a specialised fitness class at Waldorf Astoria’s sun-lit gym to help overcome fatigue and re-energise the body. Specialised personal trainers are at hand to guide travellers

through a tailored routine that begins with a 20-30-minute brisk walk in the Dubai sun, to breath in fresh air and soak up some Vitamin D, which is directly linked to improved sleep quality.

Once warmed up, guests are then guided through a workout using lightweights, followed by gentle yoga stretches and breathing exercises to loosen limbs and improve blood flow. Guests are then handed an in-room stretch sheet that utilises their room furniture to keep up the routine during their stay, along with a running map for those looking to exercise and take in the spectacular grounds and iconic location of the Palm Jumeirah.

Waldorf Astoria’s Vietnamese restaurant, LAO, has created a special Jet Lag menu with dishes that are designed to ease the side effects of flying across time zones. As Vietnamese cuisine is known for healthy and nutritious qualities, this menu provides a lightweight yet fulfilling meal post-travel to help aid smooth digestion and ensure a restful night’s sleep.
