Good evening and a warm welcome to the fourth edition of the World Spa Awards, this year being staged here at the exquisite St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort. What better place to host this prestigious event than in this industry leading Indian Ocean destination? It is a privilege to be here tonight and I hope you all enjoy the show we have for you.

As we mark the fourth Gala Ceremony of this dynamic awards programme, we are

However, the standout is arguably the 20,000 square foot Iridium Spa. Meaning “of rainbows” in ancient Greek, Iridium Spa features six couples treatment suites (including two Ayurvedic suites with private steam rooms), a relaxation room with a glass floor for watching fish, and a Blue Hole hydrotherapy pool equipped with high-pressure water jets and massage cannons.

The World Spa Awards has been developed in reaction to an overwhelming demand from the spa industry for a programme that was fair and transparent, a programme with a mission to serve as the definitive benchmark of excellence, and to help foster a new era of growth in spa and wellness tourism.

Spa and wellness travel are about making healthy lifestyle choices and maintaining one’s well-being - both physically and mentally. In recent years, an ever-increasing number of people around the world have begun to recognise the importance of wellness – a trend which has seen the value of the industry increase year-on-year. According to the latest market research, the global wellness market is worth hundreds of billions of dollars and is forecast to grow rapidly over the next few years. While the beauty and anti-aging segments are by far the largest, constituting around a third, the spa sector is among the fastest growing, and it is the leading lights of this industry we are here to celebrate tonight.

The various segments making up the wellness industry are diverse and include, among others, healthy eating and weight loss, fitness, alternative medicine and the spa industry.

As the World Spa Awards arrives at the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort for its 2018 Gala Ceremony, we here explore the trends driving this most dynamic of sectors Always evolving, the multi-trillion-dollar wellness business has moved in sometimes unexpected directions this year. For example, who would have predicted the growth of magic mushrooms in the industry this time in 2017? Following a spate of medical reports, the healing properties

of the fungi are now top of the agenda in the sector, with many touting their ability to rewire our rigid neural patterns to offer treatments for anxiety, depression, addiction and more. Led by tech titans in Silicon Valley, the ‘microdosing’ of psilocybin has come to be recognised for

its potentially positive impacts of health.

While the trend is still in its infancy, much is expected of this growing market.

Less controversially, there has also been a renewed focus on taking responsibility for the air we breathe. While many peo-

ple know city life can be damaging to our bodies, few realise the extend of the harm caused. Toxins in the air that we breathe have become a catastrophic killer, responsible for the premature deaths millions of people worldwide each year.

In response, the spa industry has been keen to showcase new pollution-fighting beauty regimes, designed to reverse the impact of our urban lives. This means embracing more salt therapy and breathwork training, or choosing lung-cleansing travel destinations. As the climate changes, this trend can only be expected to accelerate as we look ahead.

through a rigorous regime of exercise – both physical and mental. In the name of wellness, we are re-wiring ourselves to achieve the impossible. For example, DNA testing allows us to look deeper than ever before into our bodies as we search for improvement, while microbiome testing will reveal secrets long hidden from researchers. On the physical side, users use mediation to brave extreme temperatures in the arctic, or employ military training regimes to take their body to the next level – a gruelling, but ultimately beneficial wellness trend.

The wellness sector is also becoming more pro-active. Guests are no longer willing to wait until something goes wrong with their bodies before they seek treatment, they want results now.

This can be seen in the new trend for ‘extreme’ wellness, with devotees seeking to become the best they can be

Digital detox is a term that has been around for a while, but after a spate of technological storms in the past year, it has returned with renewed vigour. Our designed-for-addiction smartphones are taking a real toll on our emotional wellbeing and the spa industry has been taking a lead in fighting back.

Finally, the #MeToo movement has arrived in the wellness industry. While the spa sector has customarily been seen as female-led, in effect a supplemental, woman-focused healthcare system, this trend is set to become more pronounced. There has been a shift toward women-only clubs, co-working spaces and collectives, spaces where women work, network, empower, unwind and learn from each other. More wellness travel will be aimed at this market: from tough all-women’s adventure travel to what are being called ‘painmoons,’ retreats providing women emotional healing after divorce, breakups, grief, anger, or loss of sexual happiness. There will also be new, more feminist beauty programs, that put a brain back in the beauty equation as fourth wave of feminism galvanises this rush of for-women, by-women wellness.

And if you want to work on your short game, the picturesque 18-hole Par 47 course is just the place.

Originally designed by Robert Putman in 1971 and subsequently remodelled in 1992 by Arnold Palmer, La Manga Club's South Course was completely refurbished in 2004.

The Championship course at La Manga Club, the South, is probably one of the fairest tests of golf one can find. At 6,499 metres from the White Tees, whilst being accepted as a top-calibre championship course, also provides a thorough test both for the scratch player and right across the handicap range.

Located in the centre of the valley, with wide palm-fringed fairways and water hazards that come into play on 15 of the 18 holes, the South Course holds few hidden dangers.

north Course

An undulating championship course sprawling between palm trees, lakes and 'barrancas'. These natural storm gullies feature on all three golf courses and add an extra dimension to the game.

Slightly shorter than the South, with tighter fairways and larger greens, the North Course offers a different, yet no less challenging, round of golf. A feature of the greens, all built to USGA specification, is the amount of movement incorporated in them, none more so than the short Par 3, 2nd, which has three distinct plateaux - a great test of putting. Relying on precision rather than length, an added challenge is provided by the wide variety of water hazards and 'barrancas' that snake their way through the course.

west Course

Set amid serene pine woodlands, the West Course's design closely follows the natural contours of the undulating land. Its distinct character makes it a good alternative to the other, more classical championship courses.

It is a deceiving course, with frequent changes in elevation with which to contend. The tight front nine demands accurate driving to avoid the 'barrancas' (natural storm gullies) while the back nine, up amongst the hills, is more open but nonetheless challenging.

uayaquil is a city that breathes art and culture, a destination of great tourist interest. Its high cultural value is showcased in fourteen museums that from different perspectives reveal the identity of this city port.

Guayaquil museums offer the possibility to appreciate several cultural manifestations of the city, recounting its history and recreating the stages and most important scenes of the city’s life through time.

Some museums highlight the importance of emblematic institutions like the National Navy and the Fire Department. Others, display popular culture icons like the Music Museum; the Main Soccer Teams Museum of Guayaquil, or the Beer Museum.

In this wide range of exhibitions no expression of art is left out. The Museums panoply include paintings, sculptures, numismatic displays, sacred art, and archeological pieces that gave origin to our identity.

Cosmopolitan city scenes are also portrayed in murals and stained glass windows of “Street Art” depicted all over the city under the overpasses, in viaducts, traf c exchangers, land terminal, airport, streets and parks.

Guayaquil art is also manifest in representative sculptures in parks and squares, which recall aspects of the local history, identity and folklore: Juan Pueblo, icon character of the city, pays tribute to the modest worker struggling to progress; sculptures portraying endemic fauna like the iguana, the monkey, the parrot and the cat sh; popular characters like the sherman and the equilibrist; or the ones depicting various themes like “Don Quixote”, the “Venus of Valdivia” or “The Faun and the Bacchante”; among others.
