Many thousands of votes have been cast for the best golf courses, tour operators and hotels during the build up to tonight’s event and this evening we will see who has emerged victorious.

I am sure you will agree the Conrad Algarve is the perfect venue for tonight’s Gala Ceremony.

Many of you will have had the chance to enjoy the redeveloped North Course at Quinta do Lago earlier during the World Golf Awards Classic 2015 competition. I speak from personal experience when I say it is one of the most exhilarating experiences in modern golf.

Redesigned by renowned American architect Beau Welling in close collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the new layout has been built to the highest specifications with a €9.6m investment programme and is in line to become the new number one course at the prestigious family resort.

The North Course has been redeveloped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy. While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley have been keen to design a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, aiming for a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities. I’m sure you’ll agree their endeavours have been well rewarded.

With Ernie Els Design nominated for the title of Golf Course Designer of the Year at the World Golf Awards 2015, we here sit down with the four time major champion to get all the latest.

World Golf Awards: Hi Ernie, we appreciate you taking a few moments out of your schedule to talk to us. We know you’re currently busy with commitments in Asia.

Ernie Els: Thanks, yes we’re playing a couple of tournaments here - the Venetian Macao Open and CIMB Classic - as part of my fall schedule. We also just visited Hanoi in Vietnam to view the site of our first Els Performance Golf Academy, a fantastic new facility located at the new Ecopark development.

Golf in Asia is obviously booming right now and Vietnam is undoubtedly one of the region’s most vibrant markets.

We’re excited by the opportunities and proud to have forged this new partnership. EPGA will be the foremost golf academy in the region, giving golfers an opportunity to work on their games in an inspiring environment, somewhere they can improve their golf and also have a bit of fun with friends and family.

It’s also about giving juniors from local schools access to a great golf program.

golf into schools and encourage more youngsters to take up the game, that would be the ultimate.

WGA: Are there plans for more Els Performance Golf Academies?

EE: Absolutely! I really love this concept. We all know that great facilities and coaching can be hard to come by for a lot of amateur golfers and that’s what first got us thinking about EPGA. We want to redefine the art of practice and raise the bar for what’s available to golfers, not just here in Vietnam but ultimately with EPGA’s across Asia and at handpicked sites around the world.

Already we have a second EPGA due to open in Malaysia in 2016.

WGA: Moving on, how would you sum up your year on and off the golf course?

EE: It’s not been the kind of year I was hoping for on the golf course, but that happens. Sometimes you have to take the rough with the smooth. There’s still time to turn it around, though, and I’m working hard to try to push on and make a fast start to 2016, when I believe some good things will happen.

Off the golf course I must say it has been an unbelievably good year. Liezl and I opened the first two buildings of The Els Center of Excellence in Florida, which was one of the proudest days of our lives, and we’ve had a phenomenal year of fundraising in the Els for Autism Golf Challenge.

Over in South Africa the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation is doing really well. Two of our former members Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace - played on the Presidents Cup international team in Korea, which is incredibly inspiring for our current crop

of members. And from a personal perspective, receiving the Payne Stewart Award at the TOUR Championship in September was another proud moment for me.”

WGA: It also seems as though a lot has been happening at Ernie Els Design?

EE: That’s true. We have some wonderful new design projects in the pipeline, some of which I’m not able to give details on just yet, but it’s certainly an exciting time for us.

One of the highlights of the last 12 months was the official opening of The Els Club Teluk Datai, which soon afterwards was awarded ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the inaugural World Travel Awards. That was a huge thrill for us.

Some of our more established courses have received recognition of a different kind, with The Els Club Dubai hosting its first Tour event - The Dubai Open Golf Championship - and Albany playing host to Tiger’s event, the Hero World Challenge in December.

That means five courses in the Ernie Els Design portfolio will have hosted pro tournaments [following the Tshwane Open at The Els Club Copperleaf, the Mauritius Golf Masters at Anahita and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth’s West Course], which is extremely gratifying for the design team and for the guys on the ground who are doing such a great job.

I must also mention that we just opened our third Big Easy Winebar & Grill at Hilton Durban, following the success of our first two restaurants located in the heart of Stellenbosch and in the clubhouse at The Els Club Dubai. We’ve had some great reviews in the first few weeks and I’m really looking forward to paying a visit during my winter break in South Africa in December. It’s my kind of restaurant!

WGA: Your design company has achieved a lot in its first decade or so.

How do you see the business growing in the next decade?

EE: Thanks, yes we’re very proud of the fact that we’ve been able to grow our company and portfolio of courses in what has been, at times, a very challenging economic environment. That says a lot about Ernie Els Design and also the quality of the partners we work with.

Quality is everything for our business and we’re very selective about who we align our brand with. That will continue to be our philosophy moving forward. As I said, we have some exciting new courses in the pipeline and we’re seeing opportunities in Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Europe and in a lot of emerging markets right across Asia. Ernie Els Design is really on the global map now. The future is looking very bright for us.

The 2016 LAAC will bring the region’s best golfers to one of the region’s most highly regarded venues – with the event scheduled to be played January 14th17th, 2016 at the legendary Teeth of the Dog, the masterpiece of golf course designed by architect Pete Dye. Each year, the LAAC champion will receive an invitation to compete in the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.

In addition, the winner and the runner(s)-up will be exempt into the final stages of qualifying for The Open and US Open Championship. Finally, the champion will receive full exemptions into The Amateur Championship, US Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible.
