World Golf Awards Gala Ceremony 2014 Thank you all for joining us here this evening at the exquisite Conrad Algarve as we launch what we hope will become the industry benchmark in sports tourism – the World Golf Awards. After months of preparation this is an exciting time for myself and the team as we become the only global initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in the golf hospitality industry.

It is an honour to welcome so many of you to the Algarve, here in Portugal, for the event, with a host of global leaders in attendance with us here tonight. Many thousands of votes have been cast for the best golf courses, tour operators and hotels during the build up to tonight’s event and this evening we will see who has emerged victorious.

I am sure you will agree the Conrad Algarve is the perfect venue for tonight’s Gala Ceremony. This is one of the most modern five star hotels in the Algarve, sitting in an exclusive, naturally beautiful outlook over the Atlantic Ocean. Many of you will have had the chance to enjoy the redeveloped North Course at Quinta do Lago earlier during the World Golf Classic Golf Competition. I speak from personal experience when I say it is one of the most exhilarating experiences in modern golf.

Recently redesigned by renowned architect Beau Welling, in close collaboration with winning European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the new course makes the most of its near €10 million investment to provide a challenge to golfers of all standards. With its undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards it is sure to be a hit with many players over the coming years.

As World Golf Awards arrives at the Conrad Algarve for its inaugural Gala Ceremony, Breaking Travel News here takes a look at the latest developments in this ever developing tourism sector.

Naturally, the biggest news in the golf tourism market of late has been the relaunch of the North Course at Quinta do Lago. The leading club welcomed dozens of guests recently as the new course opened for the first time since the completion of a nearly €10 million renovation project, overseen by among others European Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley. During the opening the course was showered with plaudits from golfers of all levels who

were offered a chance to test it for the first time at its inauguration.

Redesigned by renowned American architect Beau Welling, the course is shaped to appeal to players of all levels. As McGinley explained during a recent visit: “The number of people taking up golf is not increasing at the rate we would like. A lot of people find the game very difficult and so too do many of the professionals. As

a result, the concept of the North Course at Quinta do Lago was for it to attain the balance of being forgiving but challenging at the same time. The idea of the golf course here was to make it playable.”

The North Course has been made slightly wider, and allows for the player to take the driver on most holes and remain in play even if they were to slightly draw or fade their tee-shot.

A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create a myriad of recovery shot options for increased satisfaction on all levels of play. The aesthetics of the par-72 course have also significantly improved through the introduction of a cool season rough grass and the select planting of native grasses and specimen trees to help the environment.

GOLF IN CHINA Despite the ban on the development of golf courses, in place since 2004, it is expected that the Chinese golf facilities market will more than double in the next five to six years as the growing middle class spends more on leisure activities.

The sport is still relatively new in the country outside of Hong Kong, with its heritage only dating back a few decades to the lifting of the 1949 Communist ban on a sport it considered too bourgeois to be safe from capitalism-associated corruption. Since 1990 when there were only ten courses in the whole country, there has been a massive growth in the number of facilities with China now boasting over 1,000 18-hole golf courses and the largest golf club in the world at Mission Hills on the Hong Kong border.

“We increased the landing area and made them a lot fairer so that the ball doesn’t run off the fairways,” explained McGinley. “We wanted to make it as visual as possible so you can see where your ball is going - the 18th being the best example with 85 per cent of the green now being visible. We want repeat business so that people return wanting and knowing they can do better.”

The North Course is the newest addition to Quinta do Lago’s five-star golf facilities,

and the totally revamped course has been one of the most talked about golf projects in 2014. Changes introduced on the 6,776yard course, which has been closed since last December, see all greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and cart paths rebuilt using the latest state-of-theart technology.

Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels and golfers will be challenged by a

Fuelled by strong economic growth and investment from overseas markets into new golf course developments, the National Golf Foundation reports a 16 per cent surge in the number of golfers in China over the last year, having reached one million golfers in 2012. Growth in the industry has been strongly supported by the PGA Tour China debut this year, with the hosting of 12 tournaments across the country, promoting the awareness and recognition of golf across the country.

Golf tourism and estate development are major factors supporting the growth in the Chinese golf industry. Although the development and promotion of golf facilities is still officially banned, developers are exploiting the potential in the market by hiding facilities in plain sight, by promoting them as health clubs and housing developments. Since the early 2000s, developers have looked to expand golf tourism into smaller cities by building vacation homes and offering resort-style activities for Chinese business people or internationals seeking a break from the city.

MALAYSIA Still in Asia and Ernie Els has been making headlines with the opening of his first golf course creation in the region at The Els Club Teluk Datai.

Situated in Malaysia’s tropical Langkawi archipelago, the four-time major champion’s design is one of the world’s most highly-anticipated golf course

openings in recent times. Resort owner and developer, Destinations Resorts & Hotels, recently invited a number of dignitaries and VIP guests to join Ernie Els and Troon Golf at the unveiling, with each enjoying a unique insight from the likeable South African and his team.

Ahead of the official opening Els commented: “We’re thrilled to be officially opening our new course, The Els Club Teluk Datai in Malaysia. The setting is unique and the golf course looks breath-taking. It’s going to be a very proud day for everyone at Ernie Els Design and I’m personally looking forward to sharing it with our special guests.”

Along with the award-winning luxury resort, The Datai Langkawi, the 18hole championship course will play an integral role in realising DRH’s vision for the development of golf and bespoke tourism experiences in Malaysia. Early feedback among those lucky enough to have been treated to a sneak preview has been universally positive, giving great encouragement to senior vice president of The Els Club Malaysia, David Townend.

He said: “The response that we have been receiving from golfers and non-golfers who have set foot on The Els Club Teluk Datai has been unanimous; this is one of the world’s most visually stunning golf courses, and a true gift of nature. To my mind, the location, layout, quality

of course conditioning and its first-class service standards that Troon is worldrenowned for set it apart from all others in the region.

Els, whose course portfolio includes designs in his native South Africa, the UAE, China and the USA, was selected

by DRH as the lead designer for the golf course development in Teluk Datai just off Malaysia’s north west coast, given his experience and revered standing in the game. Charged with developing strategic tourism in Malaysia, DRH selected The Els Club brand as the ideal fit for Langkawi, as well as two new golf projects in Desaru, the southernmost state of Johor, which are scheduled for completion in the near future.

“Ernie brings something unique to Malaysian golf,” commented Hanley Chew, chief executive of DRH. “His accolades as a golfer speak for themselves, but his vision for The Els Club brand attracted us to how this may benefit Malaysia and attract visitors to our assets. For golf fans, it was recently confirmed the Portugal Masters would return for two more years to Oceânico, the venue for the previous eight editions of the prestigious tournament. organisers and partners are confident the 2015 Portugal Masters will be the best to date. The event has become one of the most popular events on The European Tour International Schedule. It attracts golf fans from far and wide, as evidenced by an economic impact study of the 2011 edition, which showed that 40 per cent of spectators came from the UK and Ireland, 22 per cent from elsewhere in Portugal outside the Algarve and seven percent from the rest of Europe. The total economic impact from this year was valued at €7 million.

ZOOMARINE Elsewhere, Zoomarine, the waterpark located in the Algarve, has undergone a spectacular renovation and features some exciting new attractions. The highlight is the brand new Zoomarine Beach, complete with a wave machine and two fantastic water slides. The waterpark now has a ten metre waterfall, surrounded by rocks and natural sand from Algarvean beaches. Zoomarine will continue to feature the extraordinary dolphin, seal and sea-lion, birds of prey and tropical bird presentations along with showcasing the newly renovated swimming pools.

Sam’s Dolpinarium has renovated scenery and new digital content for educational and conservational purposes.

Another feature will be “Era T-Rex”, a fantastic journey to the time when these giants roamed the Earth millions of years ago. This permanent exhibition of dinosaurs will house over 20 species including fossils and animated models.

SHERATON ALGARVE HOTEL Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced that the Sheraton Algarve Hotel at Pine Cliffs Resort will commence a phased renovation incorporating all rooms, public areas and food and beverage outlets. In addition, an extension will be added to the property providing seventy-eight new luxury suites, a new Italian restaurant, a state of the art Health spa and underground parking facilities. The renovation forms part of a new agreement between United Investments Portugal and global hotel operator, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. The agreement also includes a 20-year extension to the existing management contract with Starwood continuing to operate the property under The Luxury Collection brand.

The renovation of Sheraton Algarve will take place in phases with the first stage commencing in this month. Phase one will be completed in advance of the hotel opening for the spring/summer 2015 season. The second phase will take place during the 2015 winter period and the third and final stage, will take place during the 2016 winter season.

GOLF IN DUBAI Phil Blizzard reports from the greens of Dubai I write this just as the clocks across the UK go ‘back’ one hour heralding in the autumn and winter seasons. For some this means the dramatic change in foliage – a brilliant display of autumnal colours, the hues of rustic brown. For golfers, however, it signifies the onslaught of cold, damp, misty mornings – with tee offs in the rain, ice and possible snow!

Alas, I write this in Dubai, at the commencement of the most perfect seasonal weather for a round of two of golf. A season which starts in mid to late

October and drives through to the end of June, or July if one takes into account those early morning tee-offs. Mind you, there will be mornings with mist, and possible rain, as witnessed by delayed starts on numerous occasions for European PGA Tour events at the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai and also up the road in Abu Dhabi.

But the heck, let’s forget about those little glitches and do what swallows have being doing for aeons, leave behind the European summer and migrate to warming climes. At this time of year it is hard to find one which is better than here in Dubai.

Let’s start with the Emirates Golf Club, home to the early season Dubai Desert Classic, and the oldest golf course in the region. The Wadi course, which has seen the big names in golf tackle the desert (sand) bunkers with much frustration, is a course which is much in demand and quite rightly so.

Christopher Mays, CEO, Dubai Golf: “We celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Dubai Desert Classic, which was a phenomenal occasion, last year where all the previous winners game back and

played. Golf in Dubai got all those players together, including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Ernie Els – all the previous winners for a fantastic event.”

In the past 25 years golf in Dubai has grown enormously, not from only attracting the biggest stars on the professional circuit to the Emirates Golf Club, but also with the number of clubs and course available to golfers, no matter what their handicap happens to be.

The Dubai Creek and Golf Club is also one of those with a long heritage, by Dubai standards, as the links course celebrates 21 years and a course record of 63, jointly held by Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke.

That course is located in the heart of Dubai, alongside what, many say, is where Dubai began – the Dubai Creek, an entrée port for the Gulf countries, India, Iraq and the West coast of Africa.

Elsewhere in the city you can find golf courses alongside race tracks and close to shopping malls. Take for example The Track, Meydan Golf which is a daily-fee

facility with floodlight driving range and Academy by Troon. The 9-hole course is located next to the Meydan Racecourse, home to the richest horse race in the world – The Dubai World Cup. Away from racing how about a spot of shop ‘n’ golf with Al Badia Golf Course being linked to an emporium of shopping at Dubai Festival City. Whilst out of town it could be a case of surf ‘n’ golf at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort which has seen the likes of Tiger Woods tackle the 9-hole heritage course over-looking the marina and the sea, in preludes to the Dubai Desert Classic.

Then something of a ‘dog leg’ drive in order to get to the ‘end of season’ club, the host for ‘The Race to Dubai’ and its grand finale, the Earth course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates.

With courses of such a high calibre one can see why practitioners and aficionados of the sport flock to Dubai, just as swallows fly to warmer climes, to escape the winters of Northern Europe.
