Welcome President of the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2012 I wish you all a very warm welcome to the World Travel Awards Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2012, officially supported by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

This evening represents the climax of a year-long quest to find the very best travel brands in the world, covering seven continents and more than 9,000 nominees.

Now the competition has been whittled down to the elite few – the winners from each of our regional ceremonies – and we are honoured to have such a pool of incredible travel talent gathered here in Gurgaon, New Delhi’s thriving business hub.

It is an honour to welcome India as the host of this year’s Grand Final. In less than a decade, the number of international tourists to India has more than doubled, reflecting how travel and tourism is linked inextricably with the economic evolution of this new superpower. By 2015 the industry is expected to create an additional 25 million jobs in this thriving nation.

These awards have always been known for their service to address and celebrate excellence across all segments of global Travel and Tourism Industry. The Ministry of Tourism has set a target for increasing India’s share in world tourist arrivals from present 0.64% to 1% by the year 2016. To achieve this target, the Ministry has prepared a multi-pronged strategy, which includes development of world class infrastructure & manpower and undertake aggressive promotional and marketing activities.

Recently, we launched “Take II” of our Incredible India Campaign “Find What You Seek” indicating a paradigm shift in our thinking. In the second phase, the Incredible India Campaign is going to focus on consumers. Tourists from the world over can find their destination or product of desire in India. Incredible India welcomes the world It would take a lifetime to explore everything India has to offer, with this vast country dazzling countless holidaymakers each year with its unique charms. From the houseboats of Kerala and the beaches of Goa, to the business hotels of New Delhi the destination caters for every market – be it business or pleasure. Here World Travel Awards takes a look at what makes India so special.

Long part of the tourist trail for European visitors with a taste for the exotic, India has now grown into a globally admired tourism destination. Its marketing agency, Incredible India, is recognised for its success in expanding the industry from its humble beginnings into an international powerhouse in just two decades. India now competes with anywhere else on earth, whether seeking to attract MICE tourism to its ultra-

modern hotels in Delhi, holidaymakers to the beaches of Goa, or those with a culinary eye to the, well, just about anywhere in the country.

Easily accessible through a host of international airlines, India is also very competitively priced for such a prestigious destination. A fabulous rail network makes getting around a breeze, while a tremendous variety of accommodation offers something for every taste. The warmth of the India people is also second-to-none, with each guest made to feel at home – be it in a modest family dwelling or a royal palace.

Visas to visit can be obtained quickly from virtually anywhere in the world, even upon arrival for some nationalities, while the country’s vast geography means there is something on offer for 12 months of the year. In short, India is Incredible!

Tourism in India According to figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) India welcomed nearly six million international visitors in 2011, with overseas guests spending over $15 billion between them.

Add to this the extensive domestic tourism market, which sees hundreds of millions of trips made around the county each year, and the importance of tourism to the Indian economy becomes clear.

Many overseas visitors arrive from the United Kingdom and the United States, with travellers able to take advantage of a shared cultural heritage, as well as a common language, during a stay. While there is so much on offer, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have emerged as the top five states for international visitors, with the beaches of Goa also considered among the finest in the world.

With nearly 40 million Indians employed in the tourism sector, according to figures from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the government has been quick to recognise the significance of the industry. A new ‘visa or arrival’ scheme has seen thousands of visitors from Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore issued with permits on arrival in India, cutting paperwork, over the past two years, with Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos and Myanmar also now enrolled in the scheme. The ministry of tourism has also been spending millions of rupees each year to improve the facilities on offer to tourists, largely through the development of infrastructure, construction of budget accommodation, and the training of those employed in the sector.

Colourful sights of Kerala

Incredible India has played a role in the development of the sector, recently launching a new advertising campaign in the key UK market. The ‘Find What You Seek’ campaign, which was launched by newly appointed tourism minister K Chiranjeevi in London in November this year, aims to highlight to consumers that they will find whatever it is they are looking for from a holiday in India. It is hoped the campaign will build awareness of the Indian tourism offering, with officials hoping to increase international visitor numbers by 12 per cent each year until 2016.

Speaking to World Travel Awards during the launch of the campaign minister Chiranjeevi said: “There is tremendous undeveloped potential for tourism in India. We have so many destinations under one flag, but our share of international visitors is still low. We should be looking to boost arrivals each year until we achieve our full potential in a very competitive international market.”

These efforts have not gone unnoticed, with World Travel Awards presenting the title of Asia’s Leading Tourist Board to Incredible India for the past five years.

What to see in India…

With so much on offer in India, travellers can find it a little bewildering when deciding where to visit. Naturally, the Taj Mahal – the greatest monument to love on earth, and one of the Seven Wonders of the World – is top of most lists, but what else is there?

Rajasthan, which literally means ‘Land of the Kings’, is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in northern India and attracts hundreds of thousands of guests each year.

The vast sand dunes of the Thar Desert are a popular first stop, while the royal architecture of state-capital Jaipur also wows the crowds. The fort city of Jodhpur, famed for its blue buildings, Pushkar, home to the first Brahma temples, and the lake city of Udaipur also welcome travellers from around the world.

The third stop on the Golden Triangle (alongside Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, and Jaipur) is the capital Delhi. An integral part of any journey through India, this vibrant city is home to the Red Fort, India Gate, and Lotus Temple as well as a host of other landmarks.

Constantly evolving, Delhi has been the capital of numerous empires which have ruled over India, imbuing it with a rich cultural heritage. In turn, New Delhi is famous for its British colonial architecture, wide roads, and tree-lined boulevards.

Further south, the coastal state of Goa presents a somewhat different picture of India to international visitors. Ruled by the Portuguese for 450 years, the tiny state is famous for its world-class beaches, churches, and temples. Old Goa is home to towering 16th century churches, while sunseekers can relax on one of the beaches lining the western edge of the state.

Situated on the tropical Malabar Coast in the south-west of India, Kerala is perhaps best known for its ecologically minded tourism.

The tropical backwaters – an extensive network of interlocking rivers, lakes, and canals that centre on Alleppey, Kumarakom, and Punnamada – are home to its famous houseboats, while the beaches at Kovalam, Kappad, Muzhuppilangad, Cherai and Varkala rival those of Goa. Tourism focuses on the local culture, wilderness adventures, and

Up in the northern part of India, bordering with the capital New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh is the most popular tourist destination in the country. Visitors here take in the wealth of historical monuments, trek in the Himalayan foothills, or enjoy the local cuisine, which mixes the best of Awadhi, Mughlai, and Kumauni cooking. Allahabad, where the Indian national river, the Ganges, meets the Yamuna and Saraswati rivers, is also an important Hindu pilgrimage site. Bithoor, the historical capital of Uttar Pradesh where the Hindu god Brahma created the universe, and Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, also draw the devout.

Tamil Nadu, on the southern tip of India, is home to the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites of any state in India, with the five on offer including the Great Living Chola Temples and Mahabalipuram. This makes it an attractive destination for overseas visitors, who can also take in the 34,000 temples which dot the vast region. Visitors are welcomed all year round, due to the clement climate, with Kanyakumari, on the southernmost tip of India, providing scenic sunset views, and the Thiruvalluvar statue towering over guests.

But these highlights are merely the tip of the iceberg. Home to over one billion people, there will always be something new to see in India. From West Bengal, home to Kolkata, in the east of the country, to the culinary delights of Punjab in the west, India is a destination without rival.

World Tourism in 2013 While the storm clouds continued to clear over the global tourism industry in 2012 major brands took the opportunity to consolidate their positions. Here Breaking Travel News takes a look at some of the deals that made headlines around the world this year.

Tourism is bigger than ever – with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation predicting we will take one billion overseas trips for the first time in 2012. Every one of those travellers needs somewhere to stay, making accommodation the most important sector in the tourism industry. And when it comes to accommodation, InterContinental Hotels Group is never far away from the headlines, having launched two new brands in 2012. HUALUXE Hotels & Resorts, the first upscale, international hotel brand designed specifically for the Chinese traveller, has signed its first properties, while EVEN Hotels will target health-conscience visitors.

“We have a track record of delivering on hotel industry firsts, and we’re doing it again by staking our claim on the wellness space

within the mainstream lifestyle category,” said Richard Solomons, chief executive, IHG. “We are so confident in the EVEN brand that we are committing a capital investment of up to $150 million over the next three years in order to deliver growth and profitability for EVEN Hotels.”

Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group also took its bow on the global hotel scene in 2012, following the consolidation of the two brands. With a portfolio of 1,100 hotels, the group has a global footprint covering 80 countries. The chain controls a powerful set of global brands - including Radisson Blu; Radisson; Country Inns & Suites by Carlson, Park Inn by Radisson; Hotel Missoni; and Park Plaza.

Speaking following the deal Rezidor president, Kurt Ritter, said: “The goal of this

development is to generate more attractive financial returns for the owners and greater value for all shareholders, to be perceived by business partners around the world as one global hotel company, to offer more compelling and consistent value propositions to the guests, and to offer global career and development opportunities to the staff.”

In the biggest money deal of the year, New York-based private-equity firm Blackstone Group agreed to buy the Motel 6 lodging chain from Accor for a reported $1.9 billion, adding to its already considerable hospitality holdings. The firm, which bought Hilton Worldwide for $20 billion in 2007, took control of 1,102 Motel 6 and Studio 6 properties, largely in North America, from the French hotel giant following the deal.

Take to the Skies In aviation, the biggest story of the year was undoubtedly the creation of LATAM - a new South American giant. Formed following the merger of LAN Airlines of Chile and Brazilian rival TAM in July, the new carrier is second only to Air China in terms of market capitalisation. Based in Santiago, LATAM controls nearly half of the South American market with its brands, with potential to grow exponentially in coming years. “The creation of this group of airlines is an opportunity to take South America to the world and to allow us to position ourselves to operate in an increasingly competitive environment due to the continuing consolidation of the global airline industry,” explained LATAM chief executive Enrique Cueto.

Not to be outdone, United Airlines completed its integration of Continental earlier this year, boosting its claim to be the largest airline in North America. In Europe, International Airlines Group continued its ascent, purchasing smaller rival bmi, while Ryanair continued its campaign to take over Irish flag-carrier Aer Lingus, launching a third bid for the carrier.

Looking towards 2013, the one to watch is surely Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou’s new venture Fastjet, which is seeking to export the lowcost carrier model to Africa. Having launched in Kenya during November, the airline will seek

to build its root network across the east of the continent, before expanding to offer a comprehensive African airline within a decade.

On the Road Bringing to an end one of the more protracted takeover sagas of recent times, Hertz completed its acquisition of rival Dollar Thrifty in August. In what will probably be the last major deal in the car rental sector, Hertz agreed to pay $87.50 a share for the company, valuing it at $2.3 billion; more than double the price it first offered in 2010. Hertz chief, Mark Frissora, said: “We are pleased to have finally reached an agreement with Dollar Thrifty after a lengthy – but worthwhile – pursuit. We have always believed that a combination with Dollar Thrifty is the best strategic option for both companies. The transaction provides Hertz instant scale with two new, well-established brands with airport concession infrastructure in the mid-tier value segment.”

Cruising Although the year got off to a shaky start, with the sinking of the Costa Concordia, the cruise industry has been among the most resilient over the past 12 months. A host of new ships - including the Disney Fantasy, Oceania Riviera, Carnival Breeze and Celebrity

Reflection - have all taken to the seas, with all the major lines continuing to invest. With confidence, not to mention passenger numbers, growing all the time, the cruise sector remains one of the most exciting in the industry.

Sports Tourism But, of course, no roundup of 2012 would be complete without mention of the London 2012 Olympic Games - one of the major success stories of the year. Britain was able to prove doubters - including defeated US presidential candidate Mitt Romney - wrong, staging an unrivalled sporting spectacular for hundreds of thousands of visitors. Virtually every nation on earth was represented in London during the two week event, with many international tourist boards taking the opportunity to do some serious networking in the capital. Organisers of the event are now very much in demand, with all eyes now turning to Brazil, and in particular Rio de Janeiro, which will play host to the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games two years later.

World Ski Awards announces Kitzbühel 2013 launch World Travel Awards, “the Oscars of the travel industry”, is launching a new programme to acknowledge the finest brands in the global ski industry. The inaugural Word Ski Awards will take place at the Grand SPA Resort A-ROSA Kitzbühel, Austria on 16th November 2013.

The awards programme will be the first of its kind to celebrate the finest organisations in the wintersports hospitality industry.

World Travel Awards prepares for 20th anniversary Grand Tour World Travel Awards will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013 with the most spectacular Grand Tour yet. While the finishing touches are still being put in place, a total of nine events have been confirmed so far in key destinations around the globe.

Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa will pick up the mantel in May, when the Middle East Gala Ceremony visits the property.

Located on a pristine stretch of beach overlooking the clear blue waters of the Arabian Gulf, Le Royal Méridien will be in the running for a number of prestigious titles itself.

Starting the year off in style, Sandals Royal Bahamian will host the Caribbean Gala Ceremony on January 21st. Guests will be welcomed to seductive alabaster sand beaches, crystalline waters, and tropical gardens as they discover who has emerged victorious in the first event of the year.

Guests will be able to make an imperial entrance from their chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce, while the Sandals’ offshore Island is just minutes away. A chic beach club, signature pool with a swim-up bar, and an exquisite Red Lane Spa all add to the experience.

Las Vegas will take on the North America Gala Ceremony in June, while Mauritius will welcome World Travel Awards for the Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony the same month. Both destinations have been recognised by the awards programme in the past and are set to raise the bar when the Grand Tour arrives.

On September 6th, Cornelia Diamond Golf Resort & Spa will host the Europe Gala Ceremony in Antalya, Turkey, wowing guests with its shimmering seashore location, world-class service and exquisite architecture. Itself recognised as Europe’s Leading Luxury Resort earlier this year, the

World Travel Awards will offer Cornelia a chance to showcase its offering to the elite of European tourism. Later in the month, Kenya, Nairobi will welcome delegates for the Africa Gala Ceremony, scheduled for September 26th, with a number of leading properties in the city presently competing for the honour of hosting the star-studded ceremony.

In October, Lima, Peru will carry the torch during the Central & South America Gala Ceremony. While very much a modern metropolis, Lima will offer World Travel Awards delegates a chance to visit flamboyant colonial buildings, pre-Inca pyramids, and the religious buildings which dot its surroundings. A real highlight on the Grand Tour calendar.

World Travel Awards will return to Singapore for the Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony in late 2013 for the final heat of the Grand Tour.
