SFTA | ASSOCIATION FOR COACHING ACCREDITED TRAINING

Welcome to the prospectus for the SFTA Certificate in Solution Focused Coaching. This course has been designed for people who want to learn how to coach professionally using a modern Solution Focused approach. You may be considering coaching as a new career or want to use coaching within the work you already do. At SFTA, we believe that coaching is best learnt through practice. From the beginning of the course, you will start developing your coaching skills and putting what you learn into action. The Solution Focused approach looks at where someone wants to go and what will help them get there. Rather than concentrating heavily on problems, you will learn how to help people recognise their resources and create meaningful change. The course also explores the psychology behind coaching. This will help you understand more about how people think and what can sometimes get in the way of progress. The course is delivered over nine modules through live, interactive teaching on Zoom, supported by guided self-study and coaching practice between modules. On successful completion, you will receive the SFTA Certificate in Solution Focused Coaching. The course has been independently accredited by the Association for Coaching (AC) at AACT – Accredited Award in Coach Training level and provides a total of 61 hours of accredited coach training. Throughout the course, our emphasis is on helping you develop as a coach. You will have opportunities to practise, receive feedback and reflect on your development as your confidence grows. Our aim is that you finish the course with more than a qualification. We want you to feel ready to use your coaching skills in the real world. If you would like more information, please call the SFTA support team on 0345 257 0056. Join us and discover where coaching could take you.

Coaching

SFTA | ASSOCIATION FOR COACHING ACCREDITED TRAINING

What if a conversation could change what happens next? Sometimes people don't need someone to tell them what to do. They need someone who knows how to ask the right questions. Questions that help them think differently, recognise what they are already capable of, see new possibilities and decide what they want to do next. That is coaching. Learning how to create those conversations is at the heart of this course.

Could coaching be for you? You may already be the person others come to when they need to talk something through. Perhaps you work in management, education, HR, healthcare or business. You may already be a therapist, counsellor or hypnotherapist and want to add coaching to the work you already do. Perhaps you are looking for something completely new, a new skill, a new direction or even a new career. Coaching can become a career in its own right. It can also be a valuable addition to the skills and experience you already have.

What does a coach actually do? Good coaching isn't about having all the answers. A skilled coach helps someone think, recognise their strengths, and create meaningful goals. Most importantly, they help people decide what they are going to do next. At SFTA, we teach a Solution Focused approach to coaching. This means looking at where someone wants to go, what is already working and what could help them move forward. Rather than telling a client what they should do, the coach helps them find their own way forward. The client is at the heart of everything we do.

Where neuroscience meets coaching An important part of our approach is understanding what maybe happening in the brain when people change. Why can someone know exactly what they need to do but still find it difficult to do it? Why are habits difficult to change? What happens to our thinking when we are stressed? Why can one small success can make such a difference to confidence and motivation?

Coaching

Throughout the course, we explore the neuroscience behind motivation, behaviour, habits, stress, resilience, emotions and change. We don't expect you to become a neuroscientist. The science is explained in straightforward language and linked directly to coaching practice. The aim is to help you understand your clients better and use that knowledge within your coaching conversations.

Learning through practice You won't learn coaching simply by reading about it. This is a practical course and you will start coaching from the first module. During the live sessions, you will have opportunities to coach, be coached, observe coaching and receive feedback. You will try different questions and approaches, use thought provoking tools and begin to discover what works for you. You are not expected to arrive knowing how to coach. Your skills will develop throughout the nine weeks as you learn, practise and receive feedback. By the end of the course, you won't simply understand coaching theory. You will have experience of actually coaching.

Coaching

SFTA | ASSOCIATION FOR COACHING ACCREDITED TRAINING

Your Learning Journey The course is delivered over nine modules. Each module builds on the one before, gradually developing your knowledge, confidence and practical coaching skills.

Module 1 — It starts with a conversation The first module introduces the foundations of Solution Focused Coaching. We look at what coaching is, the role of the coach and how a coaching conversation differs from an everyday conversation. You will learn about ethics, professional boundaries and contracting. We introduce the GROW model and look at how it can provide a useful structure for a coaching conversation. You will also begin exploring the brain and how our understanding of thinking and change can inform the way we coach. Professional coaching competencies are introduced and, importantly, you will begin practising your coaching skills. You will explore: Solution Focused principles, the role of the coach, ethics, professional boundaries, contracting, the GROW model, the coaching brain, AC and ICF competencies and coaching practice.

Module 2 — Understanding how change happens People can genuinely want to change and still find themselves repeating the same behaviours. In this module, we explore why this can happen and what a coach can do to help. You will be introduced to neuroplasticity and look at how the brain changes through experience and learning. We explore goal setting and rapport, as well as how to manage more difficult conversations while remaining Solution Focused. You will continue using the GROW model and begin thinking about your own development as a coach. We also introduce supervision and its role in professional coaching practice. You will explore: neuroplasticity, goal setting, rapport, facilitating difficult conversations, staying Solution Focused, curiosity and awareness, GROW, supervision, AC and ICF competencies and coaching practice.

Coaching

SFTA | ASSOCIATION FOR COACHING ACCREDITED TRAINING

Module 3 — The question can change the conversation Coaching is not about having all the answers or being an expert in the topic of the session. A large part of becoming a good coach is learning how to ask questions that help clients find their own answers. In this module, you will explore open-ended and scaling questions and consider how the way we communicate can change the direction of a conversation. You will develop your active listening skills and look at optimism, gratitude and positive reframing. We also explore coach presence. This means learning how to stay engaged and curious, listen carefully and give clients enough space to think rather than feeling that you always need to ask another question. You will explore: powerful questions, open-ended questions, scaling, active listening, optimism, gratitude, positive reframing, coach presence, holding space, positive coaching environments, GROW and coaching practice.

Module 4 — Growth, strengths and potential Clients bring their own experiences, abilities, values, strengths and knowledge to coaching. They may not always recognise these resources themselves, but they can be an important part of creating change. This module looks at how people learn and how coaches can help clients recognise and build on what is already working. You will develop strengths-based questioning and explore ways of helping clients generate their own ideas and options through appreciative inquiry. We also consider how values, needs, beliefs and bias can influence the choices people make and the goals they set. Rather than focusing on “What is missing?”, we begin to ask “What is already here that we can use?” You will explore: how clients learn, strengths, strengths-based questioning, generating options, values, needs, beliefs, bias, GROW and coaching practice.

Module 5 — Understanding emotions People don't leave their emotions outside the coaching room. Emotions can affect the way we think, make decisions and behave. They can also influence motivation and confidence.

Coaching

SFTA | ASSOCIATION FOR COACHING ACCREDITED TRAINING

In this module, we explore emotional awareness and regulation for both the client and the coach. You will consider how to create a safe and compassionate coaching environment while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. We also look at emotional intelligence and self-awareness. Developing as a coach involves understanding your own responses as well as becoming more skilled at working with other people. The whole course will allow for a journey of self-reflection and understanding. You will explore: emotional awareness, emotional regulation, emotional intelligence, managing emotions, safety, compassion, self-awareness, the client and coach relationship and coaching practice.

Module 6 — Setting goals and taking action Insight is useful, but coaching also needs to help people move forward. In this module, we look at how coaches help clients turn ideas and intentions into meaningful action. You will explore goal setting, motivation, outcomes and accountability. We consider how goals can connect with a client's values and introduce the PERMA model as one way of understanding wellbeing. You will also look at how clients recognise their own progress and what they are learning about themselves during coaching. The conversation begins to move from “What would you like?” towards “What are you going to do next?” You will explore: values-aligned goals, goal setting, PERMA, motivation, outcomes, accountability, client learning, seeking support, GROW and coaching practice.

Module 7 — Stress, the brain and resilience Coaching doesn't always take place when life is going well. Clients may arrive feeling stressed, overwhelmed or unsure about what to do next. This module explores stress, overwhelm and resilience. You will look at practical ways of helping clients recognise their resources and develop ways of moving forward. We also consider how a coach can remain calm and curious rather than rushing to solve the problem. The TAPS model is introduced and we consider the useful question, “What else is going on?” Sometimes the issue a client first presents is only part of what is happening. You will explore: stress and overwhelm, resilience, managing stress, TAPS, remaining curious, looking beyond the presenting issue, staying Solution Focused, GROW and coaching practice.

Module 8 — When a client gets stuck Not every coaching conversation moves smoothly towards a goal. Clients can lose motivation, return to old habits or find that the same obstacles keep getting in the way. This module explores creativity, problem solving and habits. You will consider how and when to challenge clients while remaining Solution Focused and avoiding the temptation to take over or provide all the answers. We look at how habits develop, how old patterns can be interrupted and how clients can create their own ways of overcoming obstacles. We also ask an important question: How do we know coaching is working? You will explore: challenging clients, remaining Solution Focused, creativity, problem solving, creating habits, changing habits, overcoming obstacles, measuring success, acknowledging progress and coaching practice.

Module 9 — Becoming the coach The final module brings together everything you have learned. By this stage, you will have spent nine modules learning, coaching, being coached, asking questions, listening and reflecting on your development. We explore growth mindset and look at giving and receiving Solution Focused feedback. You will consider professional integrity, your strengths as a coach and the areas you would still like to develop. We also look at what happens after the course, including supervision, Continuing Professional Development and your next steps as a coach. You will explore: growth mindset, your coaching journey, Solution Focused feedback, professional integrity, future action plans, CPD, supervision, review of learning and your next steps.

You learn coaching by coaching Coaching practice is built into the course from the beginning. During the live modules, you will regularly coach, be coached, observe coaching and receive feedback. Your lecturers will observe your coaching at different stages and provide feedback to help you develop your skills. Your practice also continues between the live sessions.

Your 10 hours of additional coaching practice As part of the accredited course, you will complete at least 10 hours of coaching practice. We will support this through a peer coaching system, giving you opportunities to meet and coach other students between modules. You can also gain further experience by finding your own coaching clients if you wish. Your coaching hours are recorded in your learning log. This allows you to see how your experience and confidence develop throughout the course. By the time you complete your training, you won't have simply studied coaching theory. You will already have practical coaching experience being able to hone and develop your coaching skills along the way.

Coaching

SFTA | ASSOCIATION FOR COACHING ACCREDITED TRAINING

Your learning continues between modules The live sessions are only part of the course. Between modules, you will complete 24 hours of guided self-study and CPD. This isn't simply a collection of homework tasks. Each activity is designed to help you think about, explore and apply what you have learned. Reading and Research: You will explore selected coaching and neuroscience material and have access to a recommended reading list. Reflective Journal: After each module, you will reflect on what you have learned and how it relates to your developing coaching practice. Learning and Progress Log: You will record your key learning, coaching experience and progress throughout the course. Coaching Tools: You will use practical tools and theories that can be taken into your coaching conversations and once used, be able to reflect on their use and success. Think Pieces and Learning Activities: These encourage you to think critically, remain curious and develop your own professional judgement.

How will I be assessed? There is no formal final written examination and no traditional end-of-course written assignment. Your learning and development are assessed throughout the course through coaching observation, lecturer feedback, learning and progress logs, reflective journaling, coaching practice, guided self-study, group discussion and feedback from your coaching practice. Your learning logs are reviewed at different stages. This helps both you and your lecturers see how your knowledge, practical experience and confidence are developing. The emphasis is not on remembering information for an examination. It is about showing that you can understand, reflect on and increasingly apply what you are learning within real coaching conversations. 14

Association for Coaching Membership Your professional development can begin while you are still training. As a student undertaking eligible AC-accredited training, you can benefit from complimentary Association for Coaching membership for 12 months. This gives you the opportunity to access professional resources and development opportunities, which may include webinars, events, CPD opportunities and information about professional coaching. It also gives you the opportunity to become part of the wider coaching community while you train.

Your route towards individual AC accreditation There is an important difference between completing an AC-accredited training course and becoming individually accredited as a coach. When you successfully complete the SFTA Certificate in Solution Focused Coaching, you will have completed 61 hours of AC-accredited coach training and gained your SFTA qualification. You do not have to pursue individual AC accreditation. However, if this is something you would like to achieve, your SFTA training provides a pathway towards it. Once qualified, you can continue building your coaching experience. When you meet the Association for Coaching's additional requirements, you can apply for AC Foundation Coach Accreditation. For some graduates, the SFTA qualification will be exactly what they need. For others, it will be the first step in a longer professional coaching journey.

What will your nine modules look like? This is a live online course, delivered through Zoom over nine modules. You will be part of a group of students who learn, discuss and practise together. During each module, you will explore coaching concepts, research, neuroscience and practical approaches with your lecturers. You will take part in discussions, watch coaching skills being demonstrated and put your own developing skills into practice. You will also experience being coached yourself. This gives you the opportunity to understand the process from the client's point of view. Between modules, you will continue your development through reading, Think Pieces, Learning Task Sheets, reflection and coaching practice. You then return for the next module and build on what you have learned.

Designed to fit around your life Training for a new qualification has to fit alongside everything else you already do. That is why the course is delivered live online. There is no travelling to a training venue and no accommodation to arrange. You can join the live teaching from home while still benefiting from interaction with your lecturers and fellow students. Between modules, your self-study is guided but flexible. You can complete your reading, reflection and learning activities around your other commitments. The nine-module structure also provides momentum. You learn something, practise it, use it and then return to build on it in a brief timeframe. Week by week, your knowledge and skills begin to develop into something equally important: confidence.

Coaching

SFTA | ASSOCIATION FOR COACHING ACCREDITED TRAINING

Does that make me an individually AC-accredited coach? Not automatically. Individual AC accreditation is a separate and optional professional step. If you choose to pursue it after qualifying, your accredited SFTA training provides a pathway towards AC Foundation Coach Accreditation, subject to meeting the Association for Coaching's additional requirements.

Can I use coaching alongside another profession? Yes. You may decide to establish a stand-alone coaching practice or combine coaching with hypnotherapy, counselling, therapy, wellbeing, education, HR, management, leadership or business.

What could coaching become for you? For some people, coaching becomes a full-time career. For others, it develops alongside an existing profession, therapy practice or business. One of the attractions of coaching is its flexibility. You could work independently with private clients, develop coaching courses, work with organisations or specialise in areas such as leadership, career development, wellbeing or business.

What do coaches charge? There is no standard coaching fee. What a coach charges will depend on their experience, specialism, client group and whether they work with individuals or organisations. A newly qualified coach may choose to begin with a more accessible fee while developing their experience, confidence and client base. More experienced coaches, particularly those working in business or executive coaching, may charge considerably more. For example, at £75 per session, five coaching sessions a week would generate £375 per week. At £100 per session, ten sessions would generate £1,000 per week. At £125 per session, fifteen sessions would generate £1,875 per week. 22

These figures are examples of gross revenue and are not guaranteed income. Actual earnings will depend on your fees, number of clients, working weeks, business costs, cancellations and your ability to develop and maintain a client base. One-to-one coaching is also only one possibility. As your experience develops, you may choose to offer coaching packages, group coaching, workplace coaching or corporate courses.

Where could nine weeks take you? Nine weeks from now, you could understand conversations differently. You could ask better questions, listen differently, and help people recognise strengths they may have stopped noticing. You could be helping someone turn an idea into a goal and a goal into action. Importantly, you will have spent time actually coaching rather than simply reading about how coaching works. Perhaps coaching will become your new career. Perhaps it will add something valuable to the work you already do. Or perhaps you don't yet know exactly where it will take you. You don't have to. You simply need to decide whether you are ready to begin.
