Here’s why our Tour Directors are the best
Our Tour Directors have real, professional training under their belts. They invent new ways of seeing things and helping students squeeze the last ounce of learning and fun from their program. Here’s how our Tour Directors personify excellence.
Infectious enthusiasm
They lead adventures off the beaten path and set the action-packed pace for each day.
Inclusive friends and coaches
They know that bringing students along with them instead of lecturing at them is the key to making things fun and memorable.
Proud locals who love to share
They’re all savvy natives and exceptionally knowledgable about their destinations: “Let me show you my London. It’s not just what you’ve read and think!”
Innovators and creators
They share our philosopy that learning activities embedded in the adventure of travel combine for a more enriching education.
Skilled leaders
They know how to get students dialled in to their surroundings. “Be silly. Be playful. Be fun. Laughing together brings us together, and gets us all started off at the same place at the same time.”
— Alexandra Rauter, Tour Director for 16 years

Our selection process yields only the best!
We take applicants through a formal training process before they become Tour Directors by assessing how they’ll lead and inspire our groups based on auditions , role plays, and more.
-1,500 applications per year - 100-200 preliminary finalists - 20 new recruits
It all adds up to a carefully vetted, well-qualified, and enthusiastic group of tour leaders.

Tour
Director Spotlight

Meet John Lionet, a WorldStrides Tour Director
John knows that the best way to make education fun for students is to help them find personal meanings in what they see and do. He’s a unique blend of teacher, entertainer, and all-around catalyst in helping travellers find real-life adventure abroad—students see him as an inspiration and a friend, and teachers love him because he’s so inclusive.
Like many of our Tour Directors, John started out as a teacher himself, including a chair position in a high school’s modern languages department. (In fact, we give preferential consideration to former teachers within our rigorous Tour Director selection process, because we find they’re naturals at making tours educational and fun).
A Tour Director for over 10 years, John has led trips all over Western and Central Europe, from Scandinavia to Slovakia. You might see him on the steps of Carcassonne, showing students how to create a human flying buttress—or cooking up a paella dish with them in Barcelona.
On his favourite place in the world… The Mediterranean—all the ancient civilisations that influence us still so greatly today flourished on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
On interacting with students… What I love most is that students get me to see the world through fresh eyes—they challenge me to look at things differently. When I can help them open their minds and really give their curiosity free reign, we both learn together.
On his favourite impromptu activities…
Scavenger hunts, creating tableaux out of works of art... anything that prompts students to actively explore and create new connections. I also try to get them to interact with local young people—that often ends up being their favourite memory of the trip.
On how travel changes students for the better…
Young people need to have their eyes opened to the world around them, they need to be self-reliant, to learn that their way is not the only way—and to accept those differences. Travel does that!
“Young people need to have their eyes opened to the world around them...Travel does that!”
John Lionet, WorldStrides Tour Director since 2006
