INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES

President’s Report As the Academy enters its second 40 years, 2013 has been a time of significant growth and new initiatives. Our organization now has over 700 members, all of them key media professionals from around the world. Their presence and interest has enabled us to take several important steps for the future of the organization: In February, we held our first stand-alone Kids Emmy ceremony, attended by 300 people in New York City. The second International Emmy Kids Awards will take place on February 10, 2014 in New York. The International Academy and the US Primetime Academy jointly decided that our organization will take on major responsibility for judging and awarding Emmys to US primetime programs produced in a language primarily other than English. This is an important new activity for the International Academy and a significant recognition of the power of non-English language programming in the US market. We launched the International Academy’s new education initiative and will be piloting this course with students from around the world. The course, directed at people interested in learning the business of international television, is a combination of online learning and several days of classroom activity and media organization visits.

Even while all these new initiatives were being put in place, the basic activities of the Academy continue to thrive. We had well over 1,000 entries from around the world for our four Emmy competitions, including the one which culminates at the November Gala. In addition to that long time event, the Academy now holds separate ceremonies for Emmys for News and Current Affairs Programming, Digital Programming and, of course, Kids Programming. Our board and members meetings this year dealt with Academy business and industry issues and featured two prominent guests. At the March meeting, Academy Director Jonathan Miller led a wide-ranging discussion with News Corp’s James Murdoch about industry and world issues. Mr. Murdoch took our members through a perceptive countryby-country analysis of media opportunities and challenges. At our Los Angeles meeting in September, held at the Paley Center building in Beverly Hills, Paley President and Academy Director Pat Mitchell interviewed leading media innovator Anne Sweeney, the Co-Chair of Disney Media Networks and President of Disney/ABC Television Group. We have now scheduled dates and places for our very popular initiative, International Academy Day. Next spring, we will hold an Academy Day in Jerusalem, from June 11 to 14, which will be hosted by Academy Director Nadav Palti and his company, Dori Media Group. The organizers of this major event are planning meetings with leading media and political figures in the region and several outstanding cultural events. A year later, from June 25 to 28, 2015, we will hold an Academy Day in Rio de Janeiro in conjunction with the run up to the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. Our host,TV Globo, is a long-time and valued partner of the Academy and the host broadcaster for the Olympics. We will be welcomed by Globo’s Executive Team, headed by Globo CEO Carlos Henrique Schroder and its Director of Programming, Amauri Soares. As television around the world has become increasingly interdependent, the Academy has come to work with a wide range of distinguished partners. We present the Digital Emmys at MIPTV in partnership with the Reed Midem organization; we present the News Emmys in New York in an alliance with the National Television Academy’s own news awards. And, of course, we have a group of distinguished partners for the November Gala, the Kids Emmy Awards and our annual World Television International Emmy Almanac 2013/2014

Festival. All of these companies are listed elsewhere in this Almanac, and we thank them profoundly for their support and belief in the International Academy’s mission. A rapidly growing organization like ours is highly dependent on good governance, and I am indebted to the Academy’s Executive Committee, which has worked with me for many years in guiding our organization. I want to thank Fred Cohen, our Chairman; Simon Sutton and Blair Westlake, respectively our Secretary and Treasurer; Larry Gershman, Rainer Siek, Jim Rosenfeld and Kevin Beggs, the heads of our standing committees; and Ralph Baruch, Adriana Cisneros and Steve Ronson. The organization is exceedingly well run on a daily basis by a professional staff led by Camille Bidermann Roizen, our Senior Vice President and Executive Director. She and her staff are a marvel. We have an excellent working relationship with the Television Academy in Los Angeles and the National Television Academy in New York. For that, I am grateful for the support of Bruce Rosenblum and Lucy Hood at the Academy of Tele vision Arts & Sciences, and of Malachy Wienges, Carolyn Grippi and Herb Granath at the National Academy. I have been fortunate to spend much of my professional career at Hearst Corporation, led so ably for most of my time here by Frank A. Bennack, Jr., Executive Vice Chairman of Hearst. Frank has always been a strong advocate of the Academy’s mission and activities, and I have been much better at this job because of him. Frank was succeeded as CEO of Hearst this year by Steven Swar tz. Steve, too, is a ver y talented and imaginative media executive with a International Emmy Almanac 2013/2014

deep interest in the Academy. He has become a great suppor ter of what we do, and I am grateful for that. On a worldwide basis, our profession has never been more important or more challenged. We deal every day with technological leaps which make possible great advances in what we do, but also challenge us to keep up. The journalists who are an important part of our constituency are challenged in a different way, and all too often put their lives at risk to get the story. The Academy seeks to be a touchstone in our members’ professional lives and a source of encouragement and recognition for the difficult yet often exhilarating changes we face very day. In this vital task, I hope we are succeeding. 5

2013 MARCH BOARD & MEMBERS MEETING

A Conversation with James Murdoch Conducted by Jon Miller March 15, 2013 The University Club, New York. Jon Miller, former CEO of digital media at News Corporation, conducted a Q&A with James Murdoch, deputy COO. Here is an excerpt from their conversation.

MILLER: What I’d like to do is start with television around the world. As you’ll see, James has experience in many different places. We’ll use that as a jumping off point on some larger issues of strategy and some digital things. But just to set up, one of the things I admire about News Corp., and I always have, and I recently finished up there after approximately 4 years, is that News Corp. is an operator of businesses around the world, Jon Miller in conversation with James Murdoch media businesses around the world. It’s not like what I believe a lot of U.S. media companies are, terms of going from a pan-regional Asian broadcaster in which is they export stuff that they’ve made in the U.S. to the ‘90s with five channels broadcasting to 53 countries other parts of the world. News Corp. operates businesses and all of that sort of business. When I was there from the around the world. And really, James has been very much at end of ‘99 or early 2000, we really took a very different the heart of that, as Chairman and Chief Executive of STAR, view and said, we’re actually going to localize these busiChairman and Chief Executive of BSkyB, Chairman and nesses very, very dramatically and we’re going to invest in Chief Executive of News International, and I’m sure I’m forour key regions and where we thought there were real getting others… in addition to being Deputy Chief Operopportunities. The biggest example of that is what we did ating Officer of the parent [company]. So James has really in India, to really drive the business in India with local chanhad on-the-ground operating experience in television nels in multiple languages. We did that from scratch, investaround the world, in many cases as businesses were birthed, ing quite a lot in local production with a lot of creative with new satellite and cable and digital technologies. So partners in India and then through acquisition as well. And what I’d like to do is kind of go around the world a little bit today we have across the network, before you include and talk about some of the things that he’s been involved in sports, probably 20 percent of the market share. and he’s seen. If it’s okay with you James, I’ll start with STAR. So, STAR, probably, and you’ll tell me if you agree with this, MILLER: Is that the largest of any single broadcaster? probably decided—and you were part of this of course— MURDOCH: Yes. So it’s been a great journey. In India in the to really double down on India and I’d love for you to talk late ‘90s there were some 40 million analog cable television about what you saw there, and probably not to emphasize households and now the number is three times that. And at least at this time on China as much, and I’d also love for there is a lot of digital cable and digital direct-to-home satelyou to say why. lite as well. It’s been a real transformation. And I think you MURDOCH: Well, first of all, I just want to say again, thank can contrast that very clearly with [China], which has been you, and thank you, Jon for doing this and for your very gravery, very different, very challenging from a regulatory percious introduction. We’ve been in Asia substantially just spective. We wanted to invest with some partners in China. coming up on 20 years. We bought the first part of STAR We’re a shareholder of Phoenix, one the largest independTV in ‘91 and then completed in ‘93 the next piece of it. ent broadcasters there. But really the opportunity wasn’t And it’s been a real journey. It’s been a real learning in going to be open to us to create a real Chinese broadcaster International Emmy Almanac 2013/2014

and do that as a foreign company. We just had to stare that reality in the face and really shift our investment elsewhere and we did that. I think now as we look forward even the Indian economy is not as robust as it has been. It’s not as robust as the Chinese economy in some ways. It’s still a very entrepreneurial business culture and there are great companies being created in India all the time that are going out to the world and there is an incredible, diverse, creative television community that is very commercial. And that is also a very exciting difference in a very dynamic market-driven environment. It’s been an interesting time and we’ve had to learn the hard way about a lot of things and I think when I look at some of our competitors or, I shouldn’t say competitors, other big global groups, I think you’re right, some of them are maybe too smart, they don’t want to take the pain. But when you go in and you take that pain for 20 years, hopefully you come out with something that is substantial.

MURDOCH: Sports for us is really a global story and we’ve invested a huge amount in sports around the world. Speaking of anniversaries, this year is our 20th year of NFL and Fox, which has really transformed the sports network. The sports business around the world has been very central to what we’re trying to do. And part of the strategy in Asia is that the sports business will succeed the best as a part of a group of channels, as a real center of gravity for what we’re trying to offer customers. Sometimes having a standalone joint venture of sports operations is not really giving the benefit to either side and it becomes very difficult, particularly when you have some lumpy rights costs etc., it becomes very hard to stay aligned with your partners there. We had a great partnership with ESPN over a number of years in Asia, but I think it had come time for either them to own it or for us to own it. And we ultimately had a bigger appetite to own it and continue to grow our sports business. At the end of the day the same trends are happening around fragmentation, around timeshifted viewing, which is a huge empowerment for our customers and creating a tremendous amount of activity. In these kinds of markets we’re a long-term investor in cricket in India, we’re a long-term investor in rugby league in Australia and

“At the end of the day, it comes down to making sure that you are not worried about change and you’re not sitting back and reacting.” —James Murdoch

MILLER: The only way you understand about a market is to be on the ground. Let’s talk about sports now. Recently Fox took over the partnership with ESPN in Asia. What did you see there in terms of Asia and sports? 36

we’re a long-term investor in each of these markets, be it baseball here and NFL here or soccer and racing in Europe. These are things that we fundamentally believe will have durable value in a digital marketplace. MILLER: Sports is a business in its own, but it’s also a pullthrough for a bouquet of channels. MURDOCH: Yes and also for advertisers as well, it really balances the portfolio in a good way. In India, for example, STAR skews very feminine and sports allows it to offer a better portfolio. We can really give them a package that really moves the dial for our customers. That’s ultimately what they need. We believe that around the world. That is more important than ever, as those barriers to entry at the retail layer come down.

whole new network of bureaus and news gathering around the Middle East and around the Arab world in general that then we use for the main Sky News operations in Italy for example. And it really makes sense. It’s been tremendous to have that sort of resource in places like Karachi. That really changes things for us. MILLER: You actually really pushed the company into Farsilanguage programming, which is not necessarily something that people may have seen an opportunity for, considering the political dynamics in Iran... MURDOCH: It’s hard to spot because it’s pretty small. We have this fascinating joint venture with a company called Moby Group that came out of Afghanistan and they broadcast across Central Asia and across some really dynamic and frankly challenging territories. We thought there was a great opportunity in Farsi broadcasting, both for the Farsi diaspora on a general basis but also on a free-to-air satellite basis in Iran, which is a difficult thing to do. But what’s been really fantastic there is the type of programming that’s been successful. We do all the translation and we do all the dubbing between Dubai and Kabul and we get Farsi speakers and we have to get all the dialects right and we take a lot of telenovelas and broadcast them. 24 was actually very popular and all the Latin telenovelas. And it really took off and it was a very exciting project. It’s harder now with advertising, there’s been a lot of crackdown. And obviously with what’s happening, the Iranian economy has been difficult. But we think those are regions where over the very long term and you have to think very long term, you know there really are some very exciting demographic trends and there are other things where you

MILLER: Let’s go to the Middle East. As you may or may not know, one of the things that James and I worked on is the launch of Sky News Arabia and I thought that one of the most interesting things there was the editorial integrity. I’ll let you comment on how that played into the thinking of the launch of that channel. MURDOCH: Sky News Arabia is a joint venture between BSkyB Arabia and some interests in Abu Dhabi with particularly Sheik Mansour there. They came to us, Jon and I, and they said, We really want to do a channel around the region. We said to them, really, are you sure? Are you sure you know what you’re getting into here? They were particularly keen for the region to have something that could be seen to be not particularly beholden to a faction, not particularly beholden to one viewer or another but be something that could really be a genuine, independent world-class Arabic news broadcaster. And what was really great is that even though we were dealing with some interests that were obviously very aligned with the royal family and the government, the willingness of our partners in Abu Dhabi to put in government structures around editorial independence that really had teeth was fantastic and actually the channel is going pretty well. It’s really difficult, because a cousin or an uncle might call up and we’ve had to tread that line very carefully. We said right upfront: We’re going to need to cover the region, we’re going to need to be able to cover the family and are you really up for that? And they’ve done great. It also Academy President & CEO Bruce L. Paisner, Academy Member Andy Kaplan, Academy Chairman gave us the ability to finance a Fred Cohen and Michael Auerbach

change in the landscape where Liberty [Global] just bought into Virgin [Media] and there is a sense that they may be the largest cable operator not only in Europe but around the world. Do you see that changing? MURDOCH: I don’t think it really changes the landscape for BSkyB that much. I can’t comment on the business transaction itself, but Virgin is a good cable company and the management team over the last couple of years has really transformed it and made it into a really great company and we sell our programming to them. Just like we’ve worked with Liberty Global in Germany where we own cable and also in Ireland. There hasn’t been a shift, but we are seeing the emergence of a pan-European operator, which is something that I do think changes the landscape for us and it makes us kind of go back to where we were and say, how do we create a unified brand and unified service among those multiple territories?

Academy Members Maggie Jones and Nicole Devillaine

have a macro-political risk but you have to think long term. Moby just launched in Pakistan, which we were not able to do as STAR, as an Indian company, and we think that’s really super exciting. MILLER: I read a statistic that Internet penetration in the region led by Iran has doubled and obviously something will come of that. It’s growing very fast. MURDOCH: What’s so interesting there is you can’t dial that back. Since the Taliban, the amount of mobile, of telephony, that’s come through to the region is very exciting. MILLER: Let’s talk about Europe and the Skys. Let’s start with the largest of them, which is in Britain. There’s an interesting

The University Club

38

MILLER: With the Skys, you’ve really led them and pushed them to be more aggressive in offering more bundles to the consumer, to update what those offerings are. What can you say about that? MURDOCH: I guess we just get super excited to be able to deliver new things to our customers. Even though some categories may be very nascent, we were very keen very early on to make sure to make the right choices. We wanted to be able to add more value to the customer all the time. And every communication we have with the customer, everything we want to do is really articulating the huge value the customer is getting. Then really proving with new service, new viewing options. In residential telecom in the U.K. now we hope to be the largest residential telecoms company over the next few years. Bigger than British Telecom, I think, which would be pretty neat from a standing start. We bought Fibe, a company from Easynet that pretty much had hundreds of thousands of kilometers of armored fiber cable in the U.K. waterways. It was in the canals so it was very cheap to maintain and had an incredible network and so we were able to create a whole national broadband business on that little company, which was great. But I think at the end of the day, it comes down to making sure that you are not worried about change and you’re not sitting back and reacting. I always get upset with my colleagues and say we need to be better at reacting at change. I always say, we have to have appetite for change. We have to have change for breakfast every morning. We need to want to do that. And we need to want to do something better for our customers all the time. International Emmy Almanac 2013/2014

2013 SEPTEMBER BOARD & MEMBERS MEETING

A Conversation with Anne Sweeney Conducted by Pat Mitchell September 20, 2013 The Paley Center for Media, Los Angeles. Pat Mitchell from The Paley Center conducted a Q&A with Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks & President, Disney/ABC Television Group. Here is an excerpt from that conversation.

MITCHELL: Today it seems harder and harder to look at a network and go, well, I understand what a network stands for. Can you start off by telling us what is the brand of ABC/Disney? SWEENEY: I will quote our president of entertainment, Paul Lee—the brand of ABC is “smart with heart”. We target women 25 to 54, that’s really who we are about. When we’re Anne Sweeney in conversation with Pat Mitchell honest about ourselves and the programs that we choose. We are “smart with heart” and we SWEENEY: Well we make decisions now not only on the really appeal more to women than to men. programs but also based on the platforms. I was in China last week, and what I love to do when I go to a country is to go MITCHELL: So “smart with heart” is clearly something that into a school, into playgroups, not focus groups. Places where you deducted and I suspect did a little bit of research on to kids really live. I spent about an hour with a group of second determine that that was the sweet spot for your viewers. graders and third graders. I ask them a lot of questions: what SWEENEY: It is our sweet spot, not our tagline, but you do you do when you come home from school? I do my know that I do love research. I spend an enormous amount of homework. Do you watch TV? No. What kind of sport do you time just talking to people about what we do, what they think play, what kind of musical instruments do you play? Do you about what we do, what is going on in their lives, what’s have a television set in your home? They raised their hand, just appealing to them. And when I look at a show like Scandal raised their hands. And then I asked, Do you have an iPad, and you wouldn’t immediately associate that with ABC.You would then they all raised their hands and one of them leapt out of associate Castle with ABC, but at the same time you would their seat and waved their arms and one kid yelled “I have 3!” associate Wipeout. It isn’t an exclusionary definition of a netSo then the next question is, What do you do with your iPad? work, instead I think it really reflects the core tenets of the And they answered: “I watch TV”. Even though they had told programs that we pick up. us previously that they barely watch television, maybe on weekends. It was very instructive because as we look at the MITCHELL: On the subject of research and data and how world, we have those conversations, and I did the same thing much easier it is for us to know so much more about what in Russia and India, and I’ve often said a 9-year-old will tell you viewers think and feel, and looking at that capability to unwhat’s next. We can dream, but a 9-year-old will tell you where derstand really what viewers are looking for, what content to put your money and where to put your efforts. they want to engage with, they are engaging with it in an entirely different way. So how have you taken both of those MITCHELL: That’s par tly then why, in spite of all the new driving force factors in your business as you make the manifestations of “television is dead”, the television indusdecisions in what programs you choose? try is doing extraordinarily well, because television proInternational Emmy Almanac 2013/2014

case of ABC, you own and operate a broadcast station, how have you navigated that very difficult territory? SWEENEY: It has been a tremendous amount of work because it is an area that we had to think about before we went digital as we put our shows into the iTunes Store or as we ran our programs on ABC.com. But when it came to the live stream of a television station that we owned, you have a whole new set of questions that come along. You have to think about local news, you have to think about advertising, you have to think about promos, you have to think about music licensing. So, we actually spent and really continue to spend an enormous amount of time making sure we have fully cleared the rights on all of the material that we have put into these Watch apps. MITCHELL: This must consume a lot more of your time than you ever imagined, because it’s not easy getting through all of those various contracts, and rights and negotiations. SWEENEY: No, it’s not easy, but once we understood the task at hand we were able to bring it into our culture. Now when we buy programming or go into a negotiation, we ask people, here are the things you need to think about before you produce something. Because there are many decisions that need to be made before doing a deal. Now these prior decisions will strongly affect the downstream of everything we put on the air.

gramming is being watched, just not in the way that it was before. So ABC responded, as every other television network and content provider has, with Watch ABC, TV Everywhere on your iPad, on your mobile phone etc. So how is that going? SWEENEY: It’s going extremely well. We launched Watch ABC at our Upfronts in May this year, and we previously launched Watch Disney, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior and ESPN had launched Watch ESPN the year before. So there had been a great deal of learning about the technology, many tweaks and in the case of ABC we really needed to figure out the advertising piece of this. But it was so incredibly well received, as was Watch Disney Channel. We had 16 million downloads of Watch Disney Channel and we’ve learned a lot about what you put in front of the gate and what you put behind the gate and you know all of this is done in concer t with the MVPDs [multichannel video programming distributors]. MITCHELL: Let’s talk a little bit more about that. Everyone is very familiar with the issue of rights and the disruption that live streaming offerings provide for broadcast stations. In the 80

MITCHELL: And when many of the people in this room look at their businesses, it was the downstream that they were very interested in. Beyond the broadcast on ABC and its owned and operated, there were the cable networks and cable bundling of programs and then international distribution. So how is this Watch ABC and TV Everywhere affecting those businesses? SWEENEY: It hasn’t affected the international businesses yet, but it is a conversation that we’re having because the technology is that good. We know the future of media is personalization, the future of media is mobile. Twenty years ago we could ask people to show up and watch a show on television and even then they were able to get a video tape or they could see a repeat of an episode later that year. But that hasn’t been the case for so long that we’ve had to adapt and this mobile technology really is our front.

MITCHELL: How much do we know Anne about how people are viewing on mobile devices? SWEENEY: Right now, the information we have is largely anecdotal. We have Nielsen working very closely with us to gain some real measurement. There was a story in USA Today probably about a year ago about a woman who discovered by accident Grey’s Anatomy on Lifetime, and as she started to watch it, she realized “Oh, I missed a lot.” So she went to NetInternational Emmy Almanac 2013/2014

MITCHELL: It was actually six years ago, which was my first year at the Paley Center, when Anne Sweeney joined a group of what we call content providers (network execs, studio heads) in one of our boardrooms at the Paley Center, in a closed room in an off-the-record session with the heads of Google, YouTube and iTunes etc., in a session on digital rights issues. You walked out of that room and were the first executive on this side of the table who engaged with iTunes right afterwards, and said let’s test this out, let’s take a pilot run. That was a big risk. SWEENEY: It was a big risk. It was actually 2005 because Steve Jobs had called Bob Iger and had told him about the video iPod and Steve came down to Burbank with it and showed it to us. Your first reaction, at least mine as a consumer was, this is great, I’d like this, I would take this on airplanes with me, on the train. I would take it everywhere. I would watch this The International Academy’s Bruce Paisner with Anne Sweeney and Pat Mitchell small screen, because the picture was so good and the audio was great. I found it personflix, she binge watched all the back seasons and she ended up ally to be a good experience and we worked through a deal watching Grey’s on ABC because she was caught up. So when in five days, because we thought we wanted to be there. you look at that collection of platforms and what it did to aid We didn’t know if it would work. We had a good sense the continued growth of that franchise, of that great series, because it was Apple and we had Steve and the team’s you realize that those options are really necessary now. What commitment behind it. It was really that moment of, Why was once thought to be incremental or nice to have is now not? We can really learn something here and even if we fail, necessary to the survival of a show. we can learn something for whatever is next and shortly after that we launched the beta of ABC.com, which we had MITCHELL: What has possibly not caught up though, as you been working on, where we could stream our own referenced it, is how do we measure it and until you can measepisodes. I will never forget the phone calls we got. My ure it then how do you sell it? And until you can sell it for the same dollars that indicate the impact it’s having, then the netphone blew up the day of the iTunes Store announcement works and the content providers are having to carry a revand the video iPod announcement. And very angry broadenue load or a cost load that they weren’t carrying before. cast affiliates, very angry adver tisers, very angry everybody… Have you destroyed television? Have you destroyed SWEENEY: But we are picking up incremental dollars and your program? we’re all going to stay in and if it doesn’t work we’re probably going to fix it and make it better. And we all stayed in, we all learned a lot. We learned those very early days of running ads. You have to get the rights to run ads. We had all of those things to consider. So we actually had a very nice head start because we were alert to the rights we needed to clear, the problems we were going to have. We were alert to the technology that we would have to create to make this site more interesting and more robust. And that was actually, as I think back, that was all of the work that led to Watch ABC this past May. MITCHELL: And the fact that you were willing to take that risk, to get a few people angry to disrupt a business model, this put Disney and ABC at a head on the digital distribution. SWEENEY: In the crosshairs! MITCHELL: Well did you ever take a risk and you’re not in the crosshairs? And the learning that came out of that as you said has now informed the decision that went forward. The criticism, or maybe not the criticism but the observation, is that legacy media businesses—we call them that for lack of a better term—move too slow. There were not enough people in the decision-making positions to take the risk, to navigate the tough issues along the way. Is that your observation too? Do you believe there was any place where Disney and ABC didn’t quite move it forward fast enough? SWEENEY: No. And I think it’s an easy shot to take when you’ve been around as long as Disney, ABC, CBS or NBC have been. I think to their great credit, all of these media companies were really studying the scene and trying to figure out the best way to move their particular brand and their programming and their talent forward into the digital world. It’s not easy and I would never accuse any of my peers of being slow. I think they were thoughtful. They all to this day have very different ways of looking at the world, very different strategies than we have. It doesn’t make 84

them wrong, it just makes them right for their par ticular company, their shareholders and their brands. MITCHELL: And it’s fair to say almost everyone is trying to figure out TV Everywhere and what that all entails. SWEENEY: We are. We were out there first, we’re still the only group of stations, the only media company that has this watch live app. We’re the only ones that can stream their eight television stations today on the iPad or the iPhone. But we continue to tweak, we continue to learn, to figure out how the advertising is working with all of that and we continue to work with MVPDs on rolling this out across the country.

MITCHELL: And one of the biggest challenges of being the leader of a media company in today’s environment is that you can wake up almost any morning and somebody has created a new technology or a new platform that has thrown all your business plans out the window and raised all those questions all over again. So let’s talk about one area where you’ve been doing this lately, Aereo, Barry Diller’s company that I thought you very boldly described as oppor tunistic piracy. You were quoted correctly right? So what happens when yet another disruptor arises like that? How do you respond? SWEENEY: Well a lot of people have come forward with new technology and they come and show us their new technology. And they come as par tners not pirates. And for people like that, the Netflixs of the world, the iTunes of the world, there’s a conversation to be had. It’s only when your signal is stolen that the conversation changes and you end up in the courts. MITCHELL: But there are some battles that are wor th fighting and that is one of them. was that they might just star t offering their offering over the air, their networks as a pay cable service, which would completely change the economics of the business. Can you imagine Disney taking such a move? SWEENEY: You know I live in a world where many options are always on the table. And that is certainly something that Chase raised at the NAB conference and I do understand why he said it and I think as people who run these media businesses, people with shareholders, you’re always trying to create shareholder value, you’re not trying to devalue the assets that you’ve been entrusted with.

MITCHELL: One of the ways you’ve done that Anne as a leader is look for new kinds of partnerships too. Not only ones that you did with iTunes to create new distribution outlets but also to create strategic alliances. One of these was the partnership you formed with Univision to launch a new network: Fusion. Please tell me what led to that and what you expect out of that new partnership. SWEENEY: Before we launch, before we par tner, one of the things we ask ourselves is, Are we filling a gap somewhere? Is there an audience that is underserved? Is there someone who really needs us to do the kind of programming we think needs to be done? As a result we do a lot of research around this. We did this with our Disney Channel por tfolio, we did it when we launched ABC Family and it probably was the launch of ABC Family that taught us the most about this Millennial generation. Prior to focusing on the Millennials, we were a group of pro90

grammers who had grown up with one device for video and were amazed when the VCR hit and the DVD hit. Suddenly we were dealing with a generation that had multiple devices, that had grown up with multitasking in media. They weren’t unusual to us but we looked at their behavior and then we looked at the marketplace. The WB had shut down and they had been programming to this Millennial crowd, so we had an opportunity in the marketplace and we had an audience that had lost an impor tant storyteller. So we took this asset that had been Fox Family and we redesigned it for Millennials. So spin forward a number of years and here we are in a par tnership with Univision and creating a channel called Fusion. And this was the continued thinking about the Millennial audience, because as we star ted looking at the Millennial audience in the United States, we star ted to realize we had a generation, this Millennial group, who had parents who were native Spanish speakers but they themselves were predominantly English speaking outside of their homes and many times inside of their homes as well. And both Univision and ABC News saw this as an audience that was ripe for a new kind of channel, that delivered news, information and lifestyle programming. And we have had really, really exciting creative par tnership with Isaac Lee, who has been the creative director along with our team of Ben Sherwood and Bob Murphy in putting this together. So I am ver y enthusiastic about this. They have uncovered some of the most exciting talent and really it is in many ways a new form of storytelling. International Emmy Almanac 2013/2014

that’s really what has made this par tnership just so interesting and so vibrant and so exciting to be a par t of.

MITCHELL: You’ve got Univision based in Miami, you’ve got ABC News in New York. Different cultural workflows, all kinds of challenges. What leads you to believe that this is the way forward? SWEENEY: I think if you stay absolutely focused on your consumer, absolutely focused on this demo that you have targeted, you have a very, very good chance of being successful. The minute you get into the machinations of a par tnership, we’re supposed to do this and you’re supposed to do that...it all can fall apar t. So I think that to everyone’s great credit, they have stayed focused on the big idea. They have stayed focused on the audience and

MITCHELL: There's so many parts of the Disney Media Group that come under your auspices and responsibilities. How do you make time, how do you set your priorities? SWEENEY: It really depends on the day and the time of the year. I star t my year in October, with an annual operating plan, I have my goals firmly in front of me. We do a five year plan every year which is sort of our big thinking, where do we take all of this? Where do we go from here? And I internalize the goals and as I go through my days I think about them. Obviously right now we're in the middle of prime time with ABC and we're going into Mipcom in just a couple of weeks and we're going into the May screenings with our buyers right now. It really is a matter of where we are in the year, what are our touch points more urgent than others. There's always something that flies in that you didn't expect. MITCHELL: What information is coming to you about the global audience and what global partners are looking for? SWEENEY: You know it’s interesting because I think globally people are feeling that media is a more personal experience. They're feeling that they want to personalize it. They want it to be about them, they are creating in their own ways, networks that are comprised not just of television shows but social media and that is playing a very, very large role in how they watch television. Last year, television was the number one topic on twitter and it shows that it is still extremely powerful of course in every culture. But again they’re constructing these networks out of many different pieces, games, news, information, so that’s really what we’re seeing globally. International Emmy Almanac 2013/2014
