President’s Report 2016 In the last three years, the Academy has met with heads of state and government from three different countries, organized Academy Days in two countries—with a third coming next April in Beijing—and held board meetings in historic cities to help celebrate our local partners’ major dramatic productions.

Bruce Paisner ast month our Fall 2016 Board and Members meeting took place in Florence to launch Italian broadcaster RAI’s new series on the Medicis, starring Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden. Through all this special activity, the Academy continues to grow and add members and, of course, to present Emmys for outstanding television programs outside the US, and in the case of non-English language programs, inside the US too since 2014. We strive to keep up with the rapid changes in the television landscape. Digital programs are now eligible in all our Emmy categories, and in November 2017 we will present the first Emmy for short-form programming to recognize our members’ interest in that rapidly growing form. Almost all major broadcasting organizations around the world support our work and enter our Emmy competitions.

Our 700 members include most of the world’s leading television professionals.

Our supporters consist of a Who’s Who of leading television companies around the world, and several of them have hosted our Academy Days. We are particularly grateful to Grupo Globo in Brazil, which hosted Academy Day in Rio last year as a preview for our members of the stunning Rio Olympics that took place this summer. Next Spring, from April 19-22, 2017, we will hold an Academy Day in Beijing in partnership with our longtime Chinese

partner, Phoenix Satellite Television. The Chairman of Phoenix, Liu Changle, and his staff are organizing an important and memorable event which will highlight both the role of media in China and the role of China in the world. Other Academy Days and special Board Meetings are in advance planning stages.

We are living through turbulent but exciting and important times in the television business. All readers of this report will be aware of the increasing importance of streaming video, original dramas and an explosion of viewing devices in virtually all countries around the world. This upheaval in our industry has created exciting new opportunities and focus for the International Academy, and I believe that time after time we are rising to the occasion. We have now explored such historic trends as the production of major series like Versailles and Medici: Masters of Florence in English, so that they can be created on a lavish scale with worldwide budgets to support them. We have tried to stay on top of rapid technological change, including a demonstration and panel this past September in Los Angeles on the coming revolution in Virtual Reality. We are grateful to Deluxe, one of the leaders in this field, for making this eye-opening day possible. The Academy will, of course, continue to keep our members informed about technological, creative and financing initiatives which are so vital to their professional lives and their careers. We are also in advance discussions with companies, governments, and countries that would like to host Academy Days.

I am particularly grateful to the Academy’s Executive Committee, which has worked with me and our staff in guiding and building our organization. These are busy people and I am in awe of their ability to give us so much help. I want to thank Fred Cohen, our Chairman; Simon Sutton, our Secretary; Kevin Beggs, our Treasurer, and the other members of the committee: Larry Gershman, Rainer Siek, Jim Rosenfield, Abbe Raven, Bruce Tuchman, Adriana Cisneros and Armando Nuñez, Jr. On a somber note and with deep sadness I must note the death this year of Ralph Baruch, a founder of the Academy, an industry titan and a great supporter of the television industry through his long life and career. We will miss Ralph greatly.

I hardly know where to begin to thank the Academy’s professional staff, who manage the organization on a daily basis.

Many of them have been with us for many years, starting with Camille Bidermann Roizen, our Senior Vice President and Executive Director. The role she plays and the way she carries it out could be a model for every organization. All of us are indebted to her and her staff for building the Academy to where it is and keeping it there.

that, and for their consistent support, I am grateful to Bruce Rosenblum and Maury McIntinyre at the TV Academy and Chuck Dages and Bob Mauro at the National Academy.

For people like me, what is key to our ability to do jobs like these is the enthusiasm and backing of the companies that employ us. For many years I have been fortunate to have the support of one of the best of them, Hearst Corporation, and I am truly grateful for that. I particularly want to thank Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz, who has consistently been a strong supporter of what we do. Steve and his predecessor Frank A. Bennack Jr., Hearst’s Executive Vice Chairman, believe in the Academy and my participation in it, and I want to acknowledge and thank them for that. These are vital times for our industry and the International Academy and we look forward to playing an important role in our members’ careers for many years to come.

Adriana Cisneros Adriana Cisneros is the Chief Executive Officer of Cisneros Our family has been in the media business for three generations. We have been dedicated to producing innovative, creative and great quality shows and content for our audiences since the 1930s. Venevision sold its first telenovela internationally in 1970 and through Univision, Cisneros introduced the Latin American soap opera to North America. We excelled so much in this genre that we started producing shows (such as Eva Luna), ultimately beating prime-time ratings in the U.S. (regardless of language). We are very proud of the heritage and happy to see it being more broadly recognized.

How important is the international market for Cisneros?

Being global has always been a part of our vision and strategy. We have been selling talk shows, telenovelas, series and other unscripted and scripted content since the 1970s. Our catalogue, sold in 100-plus countries in 20 languages, is a great compliment in all the international markets where it travels.

Cisneros Media has also been an active participant and supporter of the International Emmy World Television Festival. This two-day event, held annually in New York City, gives participants an opportunity to listen to producers, directors, writers and talent and to view the nominated programs from different genres and countries. This is a unique window to get exposure to new trends–in the traditional and digital arenas—and a better understanding of how to engage global audiences.

What does being the 2016 Gala Chair mean to you?

It is an honor for me to be chairing this year’s International Emmys Gala, the world’s preeminent platform for recognizing excellence in international television. Every year, the global television community convenes in New York for this annual celebration and I look forward to being an active part of this important event. I am proud to be Gala Chair the year that Shonda Rhimes is being honored with the International Emmy Founders Award and Maria Rørbye Rønn is being honored with the International Emmy Directorate Award.

I am also thrilled to be involved with the International Academy as an Executive Board Member and I am fortunate to work side by side with Bruce Paisner, Camille Bidermann and the whole International Emmys team. I believe this organization plays an important role in bringing the global television community together.

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for Cisneros in the coming years?

Cisneros is a company that always seeks to stay on top of trends. Particularly in media, where change is a constant and consumers are more and more savvy and demanding every day, we try to assimilate and quickly respond to an audience that has become extremely fragmented; demanding instant interaction and exposure to multiplatform experiences.

We have adapted our traditional storytelling by changing the way we produce, enabling audiences to watch our content at any time on any device. We launched Mobius.Lab, a content solution business unit dedicated exclusively to the creation of high-quality shows and formats in all languages catering for multiscreen viewing habits.

Our success is integrally linked to finding the right partners, clients and employees. Our goal is to ensure that Cisneros Media remains relevant, while preserving our history, evolving our DNA and helping to define the future of our organization. We strive to keep our traditions and legacy alive while being well prepared for the future.

Alan Cumming Alan Cumming is a master artist, actor, author and entertainer who for the last 30 years has been continually taking his craft to new heights. lan Cumming is beyond eclectic. He was an award-winning Hamlet, and he had his own talk show. He was a tour de force solo Macbeth and he voiced a Smurf, twice. He shot a video portrait with Robert Wilson, and recorded a duet with Liza Minnelli. He made back-toback films with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls. He appeared in a Jay Z video and he wrote a number one New York Times best-selling memoir. He had a photo exhibition named Alan Cumming Snaps! and an award-winning fragrance named Cumming. He has played Dionysus, the Devil, God, the Pope and was shot by Herb Ritts for Vanity Fair as Pan. He was on a stamp. He was a teleporting Superhero, a Lee Jeans model and hosted the Tony Awards. He is a Tony and Olivier award-winning theater actor, and a multiple Golden Globe, Emmy and SAG Award nominated television actor.

His portrait was hung in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in the spot previously occupied by the Queen, who made him an O.B.E. (Officer of the British Empire) in her 2009 Honours List for both his work and his commitment to the progression of LGBT rights in Britain and the U.S. He switched on the lights of the Empire State Building.

He is an Independent Spirit awardwinning producer and National Board of Review winning director. Time Magazine called him one of the three most fun people in show business. The New York Times described him as a bawdy countercultural sprite. He isn’t nearly done yet.

Alan Cumming trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. After leaving the Academy he quickly found himself celebrated in his homeland for both his television work (including the Scottish soap Take The High Road) and his stand-up comedy (the legendary Victor and Barry, which he wrote and performed with drama school pal Forbes Masson). But it was the theater that gave him his biggest break when he appeared in Manfred Karge’s Conquest of the South

Pole at the Traverse in Edinburgh. The play transferred to the Royal Court in London’s West End and Alan was nominated for the Most Promising Newcomer Olivier Award. In 1998, Cabaret opened on Broadway and Alan was instantly embraced by New York City, and heralded for his stunning performance as the Master of Ceremonies. He won The Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics’ Circle, NY Press, Theater World, FANY and New York Public Advocate’s awards for his work, but for him the biggest prize was finding his new home. He has continued to work on Broadway in The Threepenny Opera opposite Cyndi Lauper, and Noel Coward’s Design For Living, Off Broadway in Jean Genet’s Elle (which he also adapted) and The Seagull, opposite Dianne Wiest. He returned to the British stage in 2006 with the West End production of Martin Sherman’s Bent, closely followed by the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of Euripides’ The Bacchae, which opened the 2007 Edinburgh International Festival and toured Scotland, before transferring to London and New York.

The following year his tour de force performance stormed Broadway.

Alan returned to Broadway, Studio 54 and Cabaret once more in 2014-15, recreating his now legendary performance opposite the Sally Bowles of Michelle Williams, Emma Stone and Sienna Miller.

His many TV appearances include Sex and the City, Frasier, The L Word, Reefer Madness and Tin Man. He played Eli Gold in seven seasons of the CBS series The Good Wife, for which he has received multiple Golden Globe, Emmy, SAG, Critic’s Circle and Satellite Awards nominations. He is also the host of PBS’ Masterpiece Mystery. In Britain he wrote and starred in the cult sitcom The High Life as well as many other films for the BBC, including Bernard and the Genie, for which he won a British Comedy Award.

Alan’s activism and passion for various civil rights and sex education causes has earned him many humanitarian awards from AMFAR, Human Rights Campaign, the Matthew Shepard Foundation, GLAAD and the Trevor Project, to name but a few. He lives in New York City with his husband, Grant Shaffer, and their two dogs, Jerry and Lala.

Maria Rørbye Rønn The International Emmy Directorate Award is presented to Maria Rørbye Rønn, the Chief Executive Officer & Director General of Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), which pioneered and drove the success of Nordic Noir drama around the world.

R is Denmark’s major public-service broadcasting institution and the country’s oldest and largest electronic media enterprise. The corporation was founded in 1925 as a public-service organization. DR is an independent, license-fee-financed public institution providing news, culture, education, music and entertainment via television, radio, online services, mobile platforms and live events. Some of its hits include Borgen, The Bridge and The Killing.

Under Maria Rørbye Rønn’s leadership, DR has continued to assert itself and expand its position within Nordic Noir drama. The TV dramas tell profound stories about people and destinies in a modern society by taking a serialized narrative and severely twisting it. They are appreciated by being visually stunning, with as much attention paid to the production design as to the plot. Nordic Noir

has become a genre in its own right, with its roots in the groundbreaking dark and thrilling TV dramas, influencing screenwriters far beyond Scandinavia. Several series have an audience in more than 150 countries around the world.

DR has gone through a significant development as a public-service broadcasting institution the past years. Besides creating original quality content, the focus is on improving to provide public-service content available across platforms. Thus DR supports the democratic debate and strengthens the cultural identity.

Maria Rørbye Rønn started her career at DR in 1995 in the legal department and rose through the ranks by holding several key executive positions. She was appointed CEO/Director General in 2011.

For generations, DR’s drama series have drawn huge audiences in Scandinavia and increasingly throughout the world with global international distribution and local versions in the U.K., France and the United States. Amongst the most recent DR TV dramas are The Legacy (2014), Feed the Beast (2015) and Follow The Money (2016).

DR boasts 22 International Emmy Nominations, four International Emmy Wins in the Drama category for The Protectors (2009), The Eagle (2005), Nikolaj and Julie (2003), Unit One (2002) and one International Emmy Win in the TVMovie/Mini-Series category for Young Anderson (2005).

As a small international player, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation has accomplished producing original TV drama from indigenous materials and talent among Danish scriptwriters, directors and actors with worldwide impact.

In Denmark, DR reaches 96 percent of the population on a weekly basis. Since its foundation, more than 90 years ago, DR has been consolidating its commitment of contributing to the country´s democratic and cultural development with programming dedicated to the overall aim to inform, challenge and entertain the Danish audience. Shonda Rhimes The International Emmy Founders Award is presented to Shonda Rhimes, the Creator and Executive Producer of Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and Private Practice and the Executive Producer of How to Get Away with Murder and The Catch.

honda Rhimes is the prolific writer, executive producer and creator of the hit ABC series Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. In addition to creating the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff series Private Practice, Rhimes is the executive producer of the ABC series How to Get Away with Murder, The Catch and the upcoming series The Untitled Shondaland Project.

For her collective work on her various shows, Rhimes is the recipient of a Golden Globe for Outstanding Television Drama, Peabody Award, Television Producer of the Year by the Producers Guild of America, Writers Guild Award for Best New Series, GLAAD Media Award, as well as numerous AFI Awards for Television Program of the Year and an unprecedented six NAACP Image Awards for Writing

Rhimes has twice been included in TIME Magazine’s 100 list of the most influential people along with Fortune Magazine’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Business,” and Glamour Magazine’s “Women of the Year.” In 2013, Rhimes was appointed

by President Obama to serve as Trustee for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 2014, Rhimes, along with producing partner Betsy Beers, received the Directors Guild of America’s prestigious Diversity Award. Rhimes was additionally a 2014 recipient of the W. E. B. Du Bois Medal from Harvard and the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award from The Hollywood Reporter. In 2015, Rhimes was awarded the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement from the Writers Guild of America, West, as well as inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Broadcasting Hall of Fame. She was additionally honored with the Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Council, the Eleanor Roosevelt Global Women’s Rights Award from the Feminist Majority Foundation and 2016 Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television from the Producers Guild.

Aside from her success with network television, Rhimes wrote the feature film Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement and Crossroads. She also cowrote Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, produced

by HBO and nominated for numerous awards, and for which Halle Berry won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for Best Actress in a miniseries for her portrayal of Dandridge. In 2004, Rhimes created her production company Shondaland.

In November of 2015, Rhimes released her first book, Year of Yes from Simon & Schuster, which was instantly a New York Times bestseller. The book candidly chronicles her moving and humorous attempts to come out of her shell by saying “yes” to everything that scares her.

Rhimes holds a BA from Dartmouth College in English Literature with Creative Writing. She received her MFA from the USC School of Cinema-Television. In 2014, Rhimes received an honorary PhD from USC as well as from Dartmouth where she was proud to deliver the commencement address.

The child of educators, Rhimes blames her parents for her rampant addiction to books. The youngest of six, she was born and raised outside of Chicago, IL, and now resides in Los Angeles with her three daughters.

Fred Graver in Conversation with Robert Friedman

March 9, 2016 Robert Friedman, CEO, Bungalow Media + Entertainment, conducted a discussion with Fred Graver, Creative Lead, TV, at Twitter Robert Friedman: I’ve known Fred for a long time, and given the elections in the United States now, his background is particularly appropriate. Fred started at National Lampoon. He then left in the early ’80s to join David Letterman. So, so far it’s pretty much aligned with our election system as you’re all envisioning right here. He was a writer early on. He then went on to be in the studio side of the business with Norman Lear. He then became producer and writer at In Living Color and Cheers. Then we actually got him back in New York, where he wrote for The Jon Stewart Show. Fred’s always a few years ahead of the curve, and Fred became, what was called at the time, the executive producer of [convergence] programming for Disney and ABC Cable. Then he joined MTV and VH1, not only running the online division for VH1 but then he actually ran programming for VH1 and subsequently stayed in the programming business at Travel Channel. In 2012 he joined Twitter. So, it’s great to have you here.

Fred Graver: Thank you for that. I had forgotten I had done a whole lot of that stuff. To me, the turning point is that Disney/ABC [role]. They introduced me to a woman named Geraldine Laybourne, who is the founder of Nickelodeon and was at Disney at the time and was work32

ing with the Disney Imagineers to kind of figure out...what was going to happen when media and the internet collide. For me, the fun of coming to Twitter when I did was that for the first time we were really seeing television and the internet coming together. Twitter was not designed to be something to watch TV with. It’s not a second-

— Fred Graver screen device, but millions and millions of people every night open up their phones, open up their laptops, open up their iPads, and they go looking for the shows they’re watching, for what other people are talking about, for shows they should watch, what’s the conversation— basically, Twitter is opening up the window on a vast public square.

So, we became this thing for television, and the creative challenge, the fun challenge was, “How do you entertain your audience?”

By the way, there’s a whole bunch of us who are doing TV at Twitter. We have people, as many of you know, all around the world.

There’s TV teams for Twitter all around the world. If you need to know who to call, let me know. I’ll tell you.

My favorite moment with Twitter is when people ask me, “How do you make money?” I go, “Well, we have ads.” They go, “Well, I’ve never seen any ads on Twitter,” and I go, “Yes, we’ve done our job,” right? We’ve very, very carefully worked with advertisers to craft those promotional messages and to pull the audience. So, the more audience we have, the more people we can put ads in front of.

We have aligned ourselves with the TV business. We are in the same game you’re in. We want to deliver and engage loyal audiences to your programming. We want to get the right programming to the right audience. The way that we do this is by helping to create a really meaningful conversation.

One of the hardest parts for media people to get now is that the way that you get people to consume your content, to discover it, to engage with it, is to get others to share it, right? Now, it’s all about sharing, and I’m not telling you anything you probably don’t already know, but it’s not about building a website. It’s not about building an app. It’s, “Get somebody to take what you’ve put out there and send it to their friends.” That’s the name of the game now.

The exciting thing about Twitter, Facebook, to a degree, Snapchat, and I also would include Google and search in here...there’s actually a demonstrable path. We can see when people first hear about you.

We can see what content resonated with them, what they chose to share, why they chose to share it. We can see when they decided to tweet about it.

Robert Friedman: You’re not going to be in content production?

Fred Graver: We’re not going to be in that business. We’re aligned with the TV industry. So, we’re in the business. It’s not that we don’t want to cause great content to be created for Twitter. We do tons of stuff around awards shows, right? We have special mirrors and devices and cameras and all these things that we’ve created to help that, but all those go out from the Academy, or they go out from ABC, or they go out from People Magazine. That’s who we work with. So, we’re not in the same business. It’s going to be interesting, though. I think there’s a very likely chance that Facebook will start commissioning stuff.

They’re already helping to subsidize people who are making great content for Facebook, and I think they’ll probably at some point wake up and go, “Wait a minute. Why are we just paying for the rights to the NBA or NFL or whatever?”

Robert Friedman: I read an article that said, “Twitter: TV’s Best Friend.” Are your competitors Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat? How are you different in terms of promoting my stuff?

Fred Graver: I think it goes back to the audience—this thing that I call the audience path, right? One of the things that we do at Twitter is when we come in, we can’t pretend that Facebook and Snapchat and WhatsApp and Vine and everything else don’t exist. So, we’ll go, “Okay, here’s the deal. We are great when you can jump into a conversation. We are great when you can cause a conversation to start happening. We are great the day of your show, the day after your show, and during the show. We are dominant in those times.” Right?

Board & Members Meeting in session If you want to put something up on a wall that you would like people to share and send to each other and drive people toward, Facebook is great, right? Snapchat, “Oh, I’m in this secret club and…and somebody from Pretty Little Liars just posted this thing of some weird mask that somebody is going to be wearing in the next episode.”

It used to be you could take a piece of content, the sneak peek for next week, put it on Twitter, on YouTube, on Facebook, and we’re done. It doesn’t work anymore because you’ve got to be part of a real conversation. You take something like Law & Order: SVU [with an episode] about adults who were victims of violence as children who became violent abusers. About a week before, they used Twitter and they used content from the show to reach out to support groups around America to say, “This is what we’re going to be doing,” and they have a therapist who was a specialist in that area live tweeting with the episode. It was awesome.

It was amazing. People were just like, “Oh my God, this happened to me.

I can’t believe you wrote about this.” Now you’ve got an audience that maybe they had never watched SVU, and now they’re watching it.

Robert Friedman: So, I want to say thank you, as a producer of content, for helping people watch my show.

I’m curious from a revenue stream standpoint. I can think of a million revenues that you could be accumulating. Lead generation revenues, advertising revenues…

Fred Graver: I’ll give you a very good example here. Before Empire premiered, before the first season of Empire, it was not a sure bet.

— Robert Friedman They came to us and they said, “Can you give this the full Scandal treatment?” The “full Scandal treatment” means the cast is going to live tweet and they’re going to send out script pages. We went in with the playbook, and we built up a conversation. The revenue team then came back and said, “Okay, here’s the deal. We can’t give you the names of everybody who saw tweets about this show, but you could target messaging to everybody who saw tweets about the show.” So, the morning after, you saw a little 30-second clip, and it said, “You can watch this on FOX. You can watch this in our app. You can watch this on VOD.” Halfway through the week, it was like, “Holy crap, look at this next thing,” and they had really awesome, crazy, little 5, 10second clips that day, the day of the show. It was like, “Hey, don’t miss it tonight, and we’re going to be live tweeting.” So, they did that for six weeks. I can’t tell you the number, but it was an embarrassingly low budget, really low budget. At the end of the day—and these are FOX’s numbers, not ours—FOX estimates that we delivered one in seven viewers to the finale. That’s six million people. They credit Twitter with delivering six million people, thanks to that program.

Fred Graver: Right, yes. You can make everything more effective because we know these tricks about building a community around the show.

Robert Friedman: Who’s really using Twitter now?

Fred Graver: It’s pretty evenly mixed. The core audience is 25 to early 40s. There is a big millennial audience. During the political season, obviously, we age up because more and more people are going to see, “What are the candidates saying? What are my candidates saying?”

Robert Friedman: What is Amplify?

Fred Graver: Twitter, about a year ago, launched our own native video product, which is very good, and it plays right in the tweet. One click opens up on your device or your web or your phone. We only credit a view if it’s been fully in the window of the user for three seconds. What happens with Amplify is you as the rights holder have something that you want to put into Twitter. For example, you’re the NFL, and we have a huge deal with the NFL. That footage of people crossing the touchdown line is a big deal. People want to share it right away, and we have an edit program called SnappyTV, where within a minute you can tweet out somebody crossing the touchdown, scoring a touchdown. So, you’re the rights holder. You tweet this out, and you would like it to reach a big, wide audience. You, or Twitter, or you and Twitter, go to an advertiser. They pay us to promote the tweet to a large group of people, and they either have something—maybe a little pre-roll at the beginning, and it says “Promoted by” right at the top of the tweet in little green lettering. They pay us to promote the tweet. So, suddenly, you were going to reach this many followers, but now you’re going to reach this many followers because it’s Procter & Gamble and they bought all of these keywords and all of these people. So, you put your content out there. They’ve paid you to be part of the content, they pay us to promote it, and it’s kind of a win-win. It particularly works if you have some kind of content and you’re trying to get discovery of what you’re doing, and then if you have a sponsor who has invested—well, they bought the first three episodes of your show, or they’re sponsoring your web series.

Robert Friedman: You bought Periscope. How do you decide what you’re buying versus what you’re building?

Robert Friedman: I read that people who use Twitter are more predisposed to ads.

Fred Graver Fred Graver: Periscope is an app that allows you to broadcast to the entire world from your phone. In many ways, it’s a huge game-changing technology. It’s been widely adopted around the world. We’re seeing more and more news organizations use it. We’re seeing more and more artists and creative people using it to bring people in. We see, for example, a lot of bands that will actually encourage the audience at a show to Periscope it. First thing, it’s not a rights issue. Watching a Periscope of a song is hardly as good as listening to it. What it does do is sell tickets in the next town, or later on in the tour, you see how great the band is, right?

So, part of this again goes back to, “We’re live.” There’s nothing else in the world that is the world’s live conversation, right? This is what people are talking about right now from multiple perspectives, whether you see that in your timeline or you see it in Moments. Whether it’s the Paris attacks or San Bernardino or the debates or crazy stuff where people are talking about funny movie titles with Bernie Sanders’ name in them now. All of a sudden you see these conversations popping up. You can drop into Twitter and just go, “Oh, this is what the world is talking about right now,” and nobody is like that. So, I think that “live” thing is our big emphasis now.

Robert Friedman: A lot of the audience represents channels internationally. How is Twitter doing internationally?

Fred Graver: I just saw a study about how people use social media. They said every kind of population, every country is different. You have a different discussion with RTL in Germany about social media than you have with broadcasters in Japan or in Australia. Each country brings a character to their social media and what they want to put out there, what they don’t want to put out there. So you need to accommodate that.

Robert Friedman: Do you do your version of an upfront or a new front where you have all the media-buying companies and all the clients come and say, “Here’s how you really should be using us and here is our tools?”

Fred Graver: We had a big video event for advertisers just to say, “Here’s the video on Twitter.” When the new fronts happen, we usually do an event. We’re not selling actual programming, but part of what we’re saying is, if you’re going to be buying these series on YouTube, if you’re going to be buying this on Netflix, if you’re going to be buying these things on Vimeo, or with full screen or whatever, here’s a way to maximize and optimize the investment you’re doing.

Fred Graver: The Twitter audience tends to leave the ads on. They regard the product more favorably and have more of an intent to purchase. I’ve always had a very simple theory about this, which is they had their phone in the hand. They don’t have the remote control. They can hear your ad in the back. The other thing is our ad-sales team is very creative.

We work very hard with our clients to make sure that one, they’re reaching the people that you really want to reach, but also that the message will resonate and feel real. They won’t feel like they’re just getting random marketing messages. More and more of these tools are coming out so they can tell their stories on Twitter better and also, more and more ways that people who are reading users, things like, “You’ve probably seen this in your feed while you were away,” right, which is the Twitter timeline suddenly is not strictly chronological and there are things where we kind of, “Hey, you might have missed this tweet. You might have missed this.” Or Moments, where you open up Moments and there is like, “It’s what the world is talking about today,” but you hear it from the source and you get multiple points of view.

Robert Friedman: I’d love to open this up to some questions.

Q: Wouldn’t everybody want to have Twitter exposure?

Fred Graver: Let’s take two different shows on Netflix. We’ll take House of Cards and then Master of None. We had an amazing weekend with House of Cards when it opened. We created emojis. We did stuff internationally. There are mutual goals, all of which had to do with, “This thing is going to come out. Everybody in the world is going to talk about it. We want to encourage people to tweet and talk about it.” It’s a win for Twitter because everybody’s getting on Twitter and talking about this thing. It’s a win for Netflix because it raises the awareness that it’s out. So they don’t need to buy a lot of promoted tweets. In the week leading up to it, they did a bunch of little video teasers and some of the fun little things, but a lot of the stuff that came up organically got a lot more response. Then you have a show like Aziz Ansari’s Master of None where all you really have there is you have Aziz’s audience. So, what you work with in there is, “Okay, let’s have Aziz tweet about this. Let’s have other people tweet about this. Let’s find really cool clips and then they are going to go out and buy tweets and promote tweets as it keeps going, right?”

They actually don’t do a whole lot before the first weekend. They let the press talk about it. They let the fans talk about it and they watch the conversation on Twitter. They watch the viewer behavior on the platform, and then they decide Monday morning, “What are we going to do? Who should we target? What should we hit?” Then they come back to us and they go, “This is what we want to do.”

Robert Friedman: It would be interesting, thinking from your standpoint, about what success is at the end of the day.

Fred Graver: Success means convincing [audiences] that spending time on what you’ve made is worth it. I think that’s it and the rest of it is gravy. The great thing about the internet is you can build this direct relationship with an audience, right?

Semi-final Rounds of Judging are not only a crucial step in the judging process, but also a great networking opportunity for the Host, and for Jurors invited to participate in the competition. Jurors, selected by the Academy in collaboration with the Host, are television professionals involved in all sectors of the industry. Hosts have the opportunity to choose from two options: to organize a

Pioneers who have really been pushing this industry forward. So first I am going to briefly introduce everyone. Then I am going to let them dive in and give you a deeper overview. To my left here I have Jonny Ahdout, he works with With.in. He has a very awesome background working in emerging technology and has really pioneered a lot of stuff recently that is very exciting. Specifically we will talk about the Mr. Robot experience. We also have Daniel Oberlerchner from Deluxe. He’s been launching their VR division here and has been really helping brands

and the entertainment industry learn about the space. And then finally Tarif Sayed from Nokia Technologies. He’s been working with the OZO team and has a background in production and sound, which will be really interesting to discuss as well.

Jonny Ahdout: I work at With.in, which is Chris Milk and Aaron Koblin’s virtual reality technology company and distribution platform. My background is in feature film development at Marc Platt Productions. What we’re doing at With.in is building out a library of story-driven experiences that are targeting the grey space between video games and cinema. To create virtual worlds that push the potential of virtual reality forward from a storytelling standpoint.

Daniel Oberlerchner: I am the Director of Content Operations at Deluxe VR. It is a new division of Deluxe located in Santa Monica.

About 30 people, they are very dedicated to VR. And as typical for Deluxe, we try to be agnostic to platforms, we work with all different cameras and all different systems. It has been a long journey for me to end up on this stage. We have amazing services for creators of content. We are happy to work with creative minds.

Tarif Sayed: I work on strategy and technology, however, my focus is not only on on technology. I was a producer one day, then I moved to the technology side and worked closely with the creative community. What we are focusing on at Nokia is to know what are the main requirements that producers and creators want to use for the future. We look at the options around technology for them. I am very proud to be here with these three people.

Taylor Freeman: Daniel, just to kick it off...high level, what are you seeing as what’s happening in the space? How is this technology starting to disrupt traditional television? What are the key things happening now and what are the milestones and what can we be expecting as the adoption starts to happen over the next couple of years?

Daniel Oberlerchner: I think what we are seeing right now is obviously linked to the release of the headsets. VR was a very exotic topic a year ago because we didn’t have most of the creators and people out there didn’t have access to VR headsets. Everybody is starting to advance like VR and ready to check out the new step. Now you can own your own headset, you can go to the website order them and in two days, you have it at home. So now, the growing user base of headsets has various capabilities and I think one of the interesting creative challenges for creators out there is to pick the right platform, and the right engagement for their content. So, that’s kind of what one of our rules is: to not only produce and post produce the content, but the very beginning often starts with a conversation about what the creator wants to achieve and how we can achieve that. What we’re going to see as far as the future and down the line I think is high-resolution displays, better economics, everything is going to be smaller. Even you already saw it from the prototypes.

Now we have consumer pods and we’re going to see more and more refinement over the next couple of years.

Taylor Freeman: Yes, thank you. It’s been incredible. For those of you who followed the trajectory of the first Oculus Kickstarter edition and how much it’s improved over the past two and a half years, it’s outstanding. Some major leaps every couple of months.

Now that we are in major consumer-product era, it’s slowing down in terms of the rapid interactions. But, as he was saying, there are multiple products out there that are accessible. There are millions of units across the world.

I guess Jonny, when you guys are looking at adapting the Mr. Robot experience and looking at taking real IP and applying it to the art, what was the process for thinking “what headset to use” whether you use CG or film and can you explain a little about how you decided to do that?

Jonny Ahdout: With the Mr. Robot VR experience, a lot of the credit for that production, goes to the show’s creator Sam [Esmail]. Sam is a very handson director. He actually came on to write and direct every episode of season two, to illustrate how much of a hand he likes to have and be creative.

When we approached him with the opportunity to do a virtual reality experience for Mr. Robot, Sam being the director that he is, understood that INTERNATIONAL EMMY® 2016-2017

imaginary friend in his head, he’s looking at the camera and he’s looking directly at you and it created this wonderful opportunity for people to feel like they were directly involved in the story that was being told. They were included as a character, even though we feel like a ghost, that we can’t necessarily interact with the other characters in the scene, that was something that Sam decided to make a part of the experiences as we follow Elliot and his girlfriend on a date. For example, you feel like you’re breathing down their neck and you’re intruding upon their date and it’s a bad date, it’s horrible and it’s all going south and the way in which Sam took advantage of VR’s limitations fed directly into the tension that he built into that scene. So, it’s this type of creative thinking of truly adapting something to a new format that made it successful in my mind.

Tarif Sayed VR is a completely different medium than film. And as such, the story that you tell has to be adapted to take advantage of that medium and to work around its challenges. With film and with TV, the way we’re used to using cuts and the way we are used to using camera movements and the way we’re used to telling stories, does not apply to virtual reality. What I like to say is that all the tools we are used to in our tool kit have completely different effect in VR. For example, somebody looking at the camera in a traditional TV show or a tradition film can be odd. We call it breaking the fourth wall. Someone looking into the camera in virtual reality, you feel as though that character is looking at you in the eyes and it immediately makes that experience more personal. From a creative standpoint, or I guess I could start with a technological standpoint, we wanted to make sure this experience worked great across all headsets. Our app “with.in” is available on your iOS, on your Android phone, all the way up to an HTC Vive, or an Oculus Rift. For us it’s important to create an experience that works nicely across all these headsets because we never know how somebody in this early of a stage is going to come get to experience the content first. When it came to the creative, the lead character, Elliot, speaks constantly to his imaginary friend in his head. You feel as though that imaginary friend is you when you’re watching the show. In this VR experience, Sam decided to make that imaginary friend literally you, as Elliot is talking to his

Taylor Freeman: It’s interesting that that was a conscious decision of the limitation in an activity. So, you got a couple different sectors right? You got 360[-degree] video, which allows you to actually— we’ve got a Nokia OZO right here, it’s a ball of cameras—to capture all angles around you, but the limitation there is that you can’t actually reach into the scene as if you were using a computer-generated environment. Which when you’re looking at traditional storytelling, it’s [what] we’re used to. We’re used to sitting passively and watching.

VR allows us to open this new world where we can actually be there and feel like we’re present with people, but I’m curious, when you’re thinking about 360 video technology...how does that, in a future where you’ve got light field technology, which is basically taking a full white film, allowing you to move around, within the scene, how does that play into the future of storytelling and is interactivity a very important part? What’s Nokia’s thought around that?

Is there any sort of timeline to be able to mix that reality with more than interactive?

Tarif Sayed: What we can and what everyone can deliver right now is that complete 360 image.

Where people will be able to walk in a scene. Those experiences now can be done on a CG graphic using game engine, but we want to do that on a video. So, the path from now until that goal, which is what we know it can be. To produce now, we need other technology components to work with us.

The strategy we took is, telling the creative industry here is the first tool to use, go use it and deliver the wonderful VR experience and challenge us back. Tell us, “We discovered what works and what doesn’t work.” We need that and we move forward together. We can’t ask as a technology provider for the creators to come up with a superior experience. Why we have a limitation on technology and the other way around is correct. We need to talk to our staffs and ask, “What do you need right now?” This is the kind of thing, it’s a partnership that we can move together in the future. From a timeline perspective, I think we are taking that as milestones. Now, you can feel and look like you’re there, but you can’t really move and sometimes it creates some dizziness and it creates some wrong science for our brain because when we go to a place we by nature can move our bodies. Right now, we go to that place visually and then we move, we feel

Taylor Freeman: Just so we have a sense of the room. How many people have tried the HTC Vive? Okay cool, just to give everyone a highlighted overview. You can actually walk around in the space; it’s called “60 degrees of freedom”. Which allows you to look underneath objects and reach out and grab things. Then, you have sort of the next level down...which is just a headset, that’s just tracking. I sort of call it “scarecrow VR” where you’re looking around like this, but you don’t have your hands. You don’t have the ability to look around, which you know, most 360 videos are in that place, it allows you an amazing vantage point where you have that one space, but you can’t really interact. So, when you talk about this global ability to connect, that’s really where this technology is so powerful, but you can feel present in a space with someone and share an experience, where you’re in Japan and they’re here. It feels one to one, you can reach out and touch, if you fist bump, you can actually feel it vibrate through the space. Very exciting, I know that Jonny, you guys did some cool work with Mr. Robot. It seems like you guys are trying to pioneer tech and it seems like you guys have a vision to create something and then instead of being limited, you just build the new platform. What that process was like, in terms of doing this global activation. Where everyone has on global headsets and they’re doing this together.

What was that like?

Taylor Freeman something wrong. So, what we are trying to do is to allow you to move a little to the left, to the right, and front, back. This can be achieved within a year and a half to two years. Then after that, fully walking in a scene probably by 2020, 2021. It is not just about the technology of capturing, it’s about entering into huge data. We need room like that. We need to make it in a smaller room? The future is in our hands.

Daniel Oberlerchner: I think the answer, as usual, is it depends.

The market right now has a lot of various target audiences. So we have typical advertising with messaging. In this case, go for the mass market. You want to promote something and get as many people as you can get. In a trade show, you need to make an impact.

The headsets are a much better experience with a computer attached than a smartphone. What we found also while we were doing VR over here, our learnings were interesting. The more presentation you have of your body, the more immersed you get. It gives you another clue and you’re more accepting when you interact with things, it makes you part of story. What we created was an interface where the user can grab ideas with one hand and one with another hand and combine things together. It’s a small touch but makes you part of the story and if we deliver one thing with just voice over, we found people just zoning out after two or three minutes.

However, if you make them part of it, suddenly something magical happens and they retain more information. The more people can engage in a new experience, they become immersed and feel part of the whole thing.

Jonny Ahdout: So, part of our launch and activation for the Mr. Robot VR experience… this is where With.in came in and built some technology to do something that has never been done before. One of the mandates, that Chris and Aaron have put forth, as well as Here Be Dragons, which is the sister company that we work with, is we are creatively led companies. For Here Be Dragons, they’re a creatively led production company within their creatively led technology company. Meaning, the creative ambitions of the creative we work with dictate how we run our business and the technology that we build. So, with the Mr. Robot experience, we really wanted to create a moment in time, where people could come together and experience the same project at the same time. Right now, virtual reality, one of the stigmas against it, is it can be quite isolating. People put on a headset and they check out of the world that they are in and don’t interact with anybody else, just taking something in.

We wanted to start changing the narrative around that. And so we built a feature into our app, where anybody around the world, who had pre-downloaded Mr. Robot VR...who would have been locked to their phones, and it would have unlocked at the same moment in time all around the world and the hub of the events was at Comic Con, where we had the cast, also watching the project for the first time in a stadium with a couple thousand people. So, you could imagine that we had a couple thousand people in Comic Con and thousands of people around the world, all putting on their headsets and watching the same experience simultaneously. So for us, a longterm vision for the future is, you, me, everyone in this room, no matter where we are in the world; can use virtual reality to port into a virtual environment where we’re together and we’re interacting together. And that environment can bend the rules of reality, we can do whatever we want in a virtual space. We can fuel it based off of our imaginations. We can be X-Men, instead of watching X-Men or we

Now that is a far off milestone, but our activation around this is to get people with the current state of technology to connect, no matter where they are in the world. Also, calling back to the ’90s when we would want to watch the series premiere of your favorite TV show, you had to be sitting at your couch, at the right time, at the right moment and turn on your TV or you missed it. That’s some communal magic that we’ve lost, that only exists in theaters today. So we are trying to rebuild that into VR and make it communal and social.

Taylor Freeman: That’s awesome and with that comes a shift in the business model. Right? I’m sure a lot of you are thinking, “How is this going to change the actual production of content? How are we selling this content? How are consumers finding it?” So I’d be really curious to get your take on the platforms that are emerging. I know With.in is working on a platform, we’ve got a number of company hubs that are building this content. What do you see being the business model of the future? I know it’ll be impossible to know what it really would become, but what do you think it’s trending towards today?

Tarif Sayed: It depends on the content first. So for gaming it’s going to be most probably staying within the gaming guideline, meaning you subscribe or you buy and subscribe at the same time. When it comes to cinematic we are still trying to figure it out…subscription can be an option. However, we are going to see before that the pay per view if it makes sense. It’s fair for the producers I’d say, more than having a subscription. However, it’s going to be very expensive for a while because the user base is still low. So today to compensate [for] that, it’s going to be tough on some users or tough on the producers. Advertising is a big thing, especially that advertising is usually driven by emotion. The early tests we are doing right now, we are even working with some scientists around when I’m in an audio experience, I’m totally immersed and my emotions are a bit 80

more controlling than maybe my brain. Then, my decision to buy something while I’m in a VR experience is much easier than when I am not in VR. So I believe advertising and purchasing and making whatever the experience may be very successful. We will see some platforms and delivery. Then there is another type of content, like news, and this is pretty much we go with advertising and only advertising. There won’t be any subscription, but there’s another important piece of content which is like live music and this is also pay per view and advertising. At this current moment in time, all the money is actually coming from companies like Nokia or Samsung or Sony. They have devices or technologies that are out in the market, and the only way for the producer to cover his costs is by Samsung paying them some money. That’s why we see sometimes a specific production house or technology provider is only delivering his content on VR or only on audios. And those audios are driven by commercials. So, it’s a long journey.

Taylor Freeman: Very interesting. I know you brought up analytics right?

That’s something that really fascinates me about VR specifically. When you have the headset on, you’re able to track all the minor movements and you can see, people are building. There’s a company, that works out of our office in San Francisco, called Ret9. They track what you’re building, they can make a heat map of what’s in the scene. You can see the hottest aspects. Then, they’re doing something very interesting as well, they’re comparing that to emotional data, so they’re actually using an EDG headset to track fidgeting, to track movement, so they can say “this movement is making someone feel like they are bored or someone’s excited” or whatever it is, so they can then adapt the experience. Which gets really exciting when you start using AIs; you mold the experience, real time, to keep the users engaged and so for brands, this is the most powerful technology that I’ve seen because you can really craft the emotional message in real time, to that person.

very year, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences celebrates its International Emmy Awards Nominees for News & Current Affairs with a medal ceremony and networking event in New York City.

This year, Nominees from Brazil, Germany, Malaysia, Qatar, Russia and the United Kingdom gathered for a lunch at New York’s landmark 21 Club on 52nd Street, during which Academy Chairman Fred Cohen presented the nominees with their medals and certificates.

Winners received their Emmys with their U.S. counterparts at a ceremony held at Lincoln Center. Information on the Nominees and Winners follows.

The Board & Members meeting took place in the Salone de Elementi in the Palazzo Vecchio and was followed by a screening of the first episode of Medici: Masters of Florence and a panel that featured series directors Frank Spotnitz and Sergio Mimica Gezzan, producer Luca Bernabei, RAI Head of Fiction Eleonora Andreatta and international distributor Diana Bartha.

After the panel, everyone was taken on a tour of the Medici landmarks throughout the city.

Gala dinner in the Salone de Cinquecento and were joined by 150 executives from the Italian television industry.

The Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi both gave speeches before the screening. The cast of Medici: Masters of Florence, including Richard Madden, Annabel Scholey, Ken Bones and Valentina Belle, also attended the event.

International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation

Gabriel Bergmoser, recipient of the 2015 Sir Peter Ustinov Award, with Academy Chairman Fred Cohen at the Festival ach year, the Foundation presents the Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award. The competition is designed to motivate non-American novice writers under the age of 30, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting. Entrants are asked to create a completed half-hour to one-hour Englishlanguage television drama script.

The award winner receives $2,500, a trip to New York City, and an invitation to the International Emmy Awards Gala. The 2016 winning script, “Living Metal”, by C.S. McMullen (Australia), was read by professional actors in front of an audience at the International Emmy World Television Festival.
