Asia-Pacific Messengers of Peace Conference 2021 The Asia-Pacific Region Messengers of Peace organised the Asia-Pacific Messengers of Peace Conference 2021 with the theme Celebrating A Decade of Journey of Peace in the Asia-Pacific on 24-27 June 2021 via Zoom and Facebook live.

The conference aimed to focus on five goals.

First, to identify the accomplishment of MoP in the decade 2011-2021. Second, to explain the impact of the MoP program in different countries. Third, to describe the good practices established in NSOs on the MoP Program through a 10-minute video, and MoP Heroes presentation. Fourth, to set out the plan for the next decade and the individuals and NSOs contribution through breakout group recommendations.

Lastly, to identify and submit proposals for NSO and WSB to further promote the MoP. The conference started with the keynote address from the World Scout Committee Chairman Mr. Craig Turpie.

Over 400 Scouts, NSO leaders and local MoP Coordinators, partners and guests attended via Zoom platform.

Scouts across the region watched the conference through Facebook Live streaming, reaching over 15,000 individuals.

Conference project leader Mr. Ram Prasad Bhattarai said “the conference reunited all Scouts under Messengers of Peace from APR to celebrate a great decade of the journey, sharing their wonderful success stories through NSO reports and learning from the best practices and heroic action of the MoP Heroes to strengthen Scouting in our great Asia Pacific Region. During the conference, we have discussed various breakout groups such as SDGs, Project Management, Story Telling, Use of Social Media Platform, Road Show, and Future Planning for MOP. With the recommendation of our participants, we are full of excitement for the upcoming Journey of the Messengers of the Peace Program.”

House of Seaweed Gerakan Pramuka

Marine pollution is one of the environmental issues faced by many countries around the world.

Communities in the coastal areas dependent on marine resources are the most vulnerable to this pollution.

The House of Seaweed project by the MoP team of Gerakan Pramuka was initiated to address this issue and contribute to the achievement of SDG 14: Life below Water. Gerakan Pramuka worked together with the Kepulauan Seribu’s citizens and local government for this project’s success.

House of Seaweed is a project that aims to introduce the importance of seaweeds in the marine ecosystem and how to make them a profitable livelihood to locals. Seaweed is vital in marine ecosystems. Aside from being at the bottom of the food chain, it provides a habitat for marine life.

Seaweed farming was introduced to around 70 Scouts and 29 Non-Scouts of which 55 were trained in marketing. The community together with the seaweed farmers and local government of Kepulauan Seribu joined the project. They organised environmental activities such as beach clean-up and proper waste management, enabling the community to learn more about the initiatives of the Messengers of Peace Programme.

M. Yashdi of SMK 61 troop said “I am so happy to join this event; this is my first offline activity during the pandemic since March 2020. I have learned so many new things about how to plant seaweed, which is one of our marine resources in Kepulauan Seribu. Moreover, we got a chance to practice and make new products using seaweed so that we can sell it later. This event is very insightful, and thank you for sharing it with us”.

Scouts For Covid The Bharat Scouts and Guides, India

Various groups of the Bharat Scouts and Guides are assisting communities heavily affected by COVID-19 in different districts.

Together with the Rotary, Scouts of Udupi District Association distributed 30 kits ration to private school teachers. In Karnataka, Raichur District Association, and Manvi Local Association volunteered to different government institutions to distribute food relief to frontliners and grocery kits to people who were under lockdown. Similarly, Chitradurga District Association conducted awareness campaigns and food distribution.

Bailahongala District Association distributed food kits to families of working groups in a hospital. The Hassan District completed its 28th service day by distributing breakfast to more than 100 people near the Scout office. Lastly, Kushtagi Local Association continued their 15th day Service by distributing pulav and water bottles to frontliners.

Beach Cleanup and World Water Day The General Association of the Scouts of China

Scouts organised a Beach Cleanup on World Water Day to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Scouting in the Republic of China.

Hsinchu City SunFun Scout Group held beach cleanup and water resources day activities at the Hsinchu Haishan Fishing port on 28 March 2021. Teams for the Messengers of Peace together and the Earth Tribe unite for the success of this event. Other activities include understanding sea waste and plastic reduction (Earth Tribe-Plastic Tide Turners), cities and water (SDGs-6), water resources under climate change (SDGs-13), and Xiangshan Wetlands-Beauty and Sorrow (SDGs- 14). A total of 128 Scouts participated from Hsinchu, Taipei, Taoyuan, Miaoli, and Taichung.

Ecosystem Restoration

Pathfinder Scouts Vietnam

Scout units in Vietnam are doing several activities that highlight the love for nature. Their collective effort endeavors to protect and restore natural ecosystems focusing on the achievement of SDG 6: Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 15: Life on land.

Outdoor activities celebrated World Water Day and the World Environment Day. Scouts gave

water containers to ethnic minority communities in the highlands of North Vietnam. They also took a survey to identify the possibility of planting forest trees in the community.

Two tree planting events were held in April 2021 in line with these efforts. Scouts planted 5,000 Doi/ Talauma trees (Michelia tonkinensis) to H’mong minority people in Sung Ma Sao Commune,

Bat Xat District in Lao Cai Province. Another 3,000 Hoi tress (Illiciaceae) were planted for the Giay minority people in Tat Nga Commune in Ha Giang Province. The trees will help generate income and provide livelihood to locals. Local forest rangers taught the participants the planting method and tree care. A small group of Scouts decentralized tree planting applications at home as a model for environmental education for young people.

It is with great hope that taking the collective effort in restoring and preserving nature as a community will address prevailing environmental issues. The long-term impact of this project is to lift the quality of life, respond effectively to climate change, reduce floods and droughts, and to continue the sense of community spirit.

From Backyard Garden to Community Pantry Boy Scouts of the Philippines

Boy Scouts of the Philippines Cabanatuan City Council organised a series of community service projects to engage Scouts in reaching out to communities affected by the pandemic.

Various projects were introduced related to Green the Earth, Quarantanim, and community pantry.

Messengers of Peace Green the Earth Project The project supports the community set up of green spaces in each household’s backyards. Scouts distributed 110 fruitbearing tree seedlings in Barangay Magsaysay Norte and Sur in Cabanatuan City. The project helps to promote not only the family’s health and well-being by encourages them to eat organic food more and live a green lifestyle through eco-friendly solutions.

Quarantanim Project Council members distributed free vegetable seedlings to the community under the Urban Agriculture project (UAP), a flagship program of the BSP. Quarantanim project helps people to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection during community quarantine by limiting movements outside the house to buy food.

The project will help these communities to plant and grow their own vegetables in their homes. Twelve kinds of vegetable seedlings were distributed to 150 families.

Community Pantry Community pantries were set up in Barangay San Juan Accfa and Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija. Scouts distributed free vegetables from the UAP project and relief food such as canned goods, instant noodles, bread, and other items to around 200 people.

Another community pantry was set up in Barangay Quezon with the help of KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL and the barangay district. It provided immediate food relief to the people in the community.

Nucleic Acid Testing Drive Scout Association of Macau

The Community Services Department of The Scout Association of Macau (TSAM) joined the Macau Second and Third Mass Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) Drive by the Macau Special Administrative Region Government. TSAM took action mobilising and organising Scouts forming two Scout Volunteer Teams in no time.

The Scout Volunteer Teams geared into action providing services at two general public stations for the Macau citizens. They round up tirelessly keeping posts 24 hours a day for 72 hours at the two stations. They played an important role in maintaining discipline and order.

Working in solidarity and with good team spirit, Scouts were dispatched at Sino-Portuguese Technical Professional School-Indoor Sports Hall and Colégio Mateus Ricci for the Macau Second Mass NAT Drive on 25 to 28 September 2021. A total of 168 Scouts participated, rendering 1,300 hours of community service; while the Macau Third Mass NAT Drive was held at the Sino-Portuguese Technical Professional School on 4 to 7 October 2021. A total of 211 Scouts contributed 1,624 hours of community service.

To Participate and To Serve The Community – this has always been among the effective strategies of TSAM in cultivating Scouting. This has been well reflected in this sudden mission of current national and global crisis. Scout volunteers were a great help not only for the Macau Government’s drive to eliminate the hidden threats of the pandemic but also to help restore pre-pandemic life for Macau citizens.

TSAM plans to produce a special Commemorative Badge called Macau Second Mass Nucleic Acid Testing. This badge will be allowed to be pinned on the uniform of Scouts and leaders who rendered their time, great efforts, and contributions to this call of public service.

Global Messengers of Peace Hero Award 2020-2021

An open call for the “Messengers of Peace Hero 2020-2021” was circulated and promoted across social media channels in July 2021. The award aims to recognize efforts in contributing towards creating a better world.

Nominations were received from 69 countries in six regions. There are a total of 900 nominations recognizing the contributions of young people towards environment and sustainability, health and well-being, peace and community engagement, skills for life, and COVID-19 emergency response. Asia-Pacific region alone had over 500 nominations.

The selection process and shortlisting was completed in September 2021 in each region. Phase II of selection by global panels, confirmation, and announcement of the final awardees will be in October 2021 while awarding ceremony will occur online in November 2021. National Scout Organizations and Adult leaders who have made excellent contributions for lasting peace and development will also be recognized at the awarding ceremony.

Solar Panel Installed in Orphanage

Afghanistan National Scout Association

Afghan Scouts installed solar panels in an orphanage located in Ghor province in April 2021. Ghor Scout Boy Troop #23 led the installation. The solar project is expected to generate 3.5KW of electricity and will benefit 200 children in the orphanage.

Scout Leader Qauom says, “This project will help solve the problems of students and Scouts who live in the orphanage. The solar project will provide 24-hour electricity to benefit 200 children".

Apart from solving the shortage of electricity in the orphanage, the project also introduces green energy and provides a conducive environment for the residents.

Meeting Evolving needs through Diversity and Inclusion Fiji Scouts Association

Fiji Scout Association has adapted the principles of diversity and inclusion to meet the evolving needs, expectations, and aspirations of youth in different social contexts.

At the Lautoka School for Special Education in Fiji, over 100 students associated with disabilities such as physical impairments, down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, vision impairments, and many more are actively engaged in Scouting activities.

Scouting is a part of the school’s extracurricular activities. Students with disabilities are taught Scouting skills and get to understand many aspects of their daily lives. The 1st Lautoka Special Stars Mission aims to contribute to children and youth education on fundamental values such as dignity, solidarity, tolerance, respect, and equality to create a society that respects and promotes human rights.

Scouting at Lautoka School Scouting has created a lot of excitement and motivation among students, helping them in diverse ways. Some of these are skills development, improved participation level in school, and government participation.

Skills Development Scouting activities have certainly helped students develop their fine and gross motor skills with activities such as knotting, fun games, flag folding, and many more. Furthermore, it also helped them gain social and communication

skills through interacting with other classes and community members. This interaction also brings increased awareness among people on special needs.

Improved Participation Level in School and Community Scouting encourages students to attend school more. It has been noticed that the participation level of students in school increased. Scouting has also led the students to interact with community members through community projects like the Clean-Up Campaign and tree planting.

Government Participation The school is actively engaging with other organisations to support diversity and inclusion. These are the Leadership Fiji, Fiji Sports Commission, and other government and non-government organisations.

Fiji Scout Association has enabled both youth and adults to understand and acquire the necessary knowledge and competencies to face the realities of living in an intercultural and multicultural world where differences are valued and respected. Scouting groups and leaders have reached many individuals in need of assistance, and will continue their unwavering efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

The Asia-Pacific Region launched the 10th Anniversary Badge to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Messengers of Peace.

Mr. Amir Hamzah bin Aman and Mr. Lawrence Yong Cham San of Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia conceptualized the badge with the following symbols: Figure 10 signifies a decade of the MoP programme. Two white hands indicate the purity of Scout’s intention to reach out and welcome everyone for the success of Messengers of Peace initiatives. The Messengers of Peace ringbadge at the center

focuses on peace initiatives that create an invaluable impact in the community. The choice of green color is symbolic of the environment.

Green also signifies the community along with the spirit of youth taking initiatives in achieving peace.

Virtual Peace Jamboree 2021 Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia

The first-ever Malaysia Virtual Peace Jamboree 2021 (VPJ 2021) was held on 23-26 September 2021 spearheaded by the National Programme Committee. The carefully laid out program was outlined by the previously established committee in March 2021.

number of committee members increased to ensure the success of the event. VPC 2021 covered numerous activities and competitions like quizzes, peace photo and peace video clip, webinar, virtual starry night performance, TikTok challenge, and many more.

Initially, the committee members were MoP State Coordinators only. However, since it was raised as a national level Jamboree, the

VPJ 2021 welcomed overwhelming entries from Cub Scouts to Rovers, and even adult leaders from all over East and West Malaysia. Despite

the many events happening at the same time in celebration of International Peace Day 2021, MoP Malaysia was beyond grateful for all the support shown to make VPJ 2021 a success.

VPJ awarded the State of Selangor as the largest contingent enrolled in VPJ 2021.

Highlight of the VPJ 2021 Closing Ceremony was the award-giving presentation. This grand finale gave several awards such as the MoP Initiative Development Award, MoP Community Project (Hydroponic Nature’s True Hero), and MoP Humanitarian Aid (Yan, Kedah Post Flood).

VPJ 2021 was designed to promote the SDGs through programs held in this virtual jamboree.

One of the most preferred activities was the Peace Clip Video. Scout members were ecstatic to deliver their message of peace.

The prestigious Scout of the World Award was presented to Madrasah for Us. They are a ten-member team from the East Coast state in Peninsular Malaysia, Kelantan. Lastly, the sought-after Messengers of Peace Badge Recognition was awarded to 58 Scouts from all over Malaysia. Their hard work, passion, and determination had paid off!

A Mental Health Webinar was organized focusing on mental health and stress management to address one of the most crucial issues faced by many throughout this pandemic. Invited panelists shared in-depth the nature of mental problems and ways to cope with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A webinar entitled ‘Charismatic Inclusive with Malaysia Sign Language’ was held to show full support to people with special needs. VPJ 2021 cares for people with special needs who have equal rights to live and lead a successful life.

They are recognized as invaluable members of the community and the world at large. The audience showed great interest in learning simple sign languages in communicating basic messages. This lively event made participants aware that many people are rallying behind the idea of equal rights for people with special needs.

Love the Street Cat Community Gerakan Pramuka, Indonesia

Scouts from South Jakarta Scouts Regency and South Tangerang Scouts Regency organised a project named Love The Street Cat to care for abandoned and hungry cats.

This project carried out a number of activities such as feeding street cats and distributing cat food to pet owners in need. In addition, it initiated within the community vaccination programs and treatment for abandoned street cats, medical training and cat care. Just as important is launching a social media campaign to educate the public about cat care.

Apart from feeding hungry street cats, organizers of Love The Street Cat distribute free cat food for the public once a week.

What inspires the Love The Street Cat community?

“Because we believe a small act of kindness can lead to positive change”, one of the team members said.

Dialogue with Nature: Train-the-Trainer Programme Scout Association of Hongkong

An adventure-based project, Dialogue with Nature Programme, is developed by the Leadership Training Institute of Scout Association of Hong Kong. The programme is an online self-learning that focuses mainly on the “Leave No Trace” principles. Over 700 Scouts and leaders participated in this programme.

The project aims to help Scout members to explore their relationship with nature in three focus areas. (1) Reflections on nature and personal identity, (2) Understanding our natures – community, and (3) Connecting to nature and action planning. These will be delivered in three stages: (1) A group of seed trainers is trained to deliver the train-the-trainer programme, (2) A group of Scout leaders is trained to deliver workshops for youth members, and finally (3) Scout members will become Youth Ambassadors after successful training on the Dialogue with Nature workshops. Their ultimate task is to spread the message of peace to friends and communities.

Amidst current social incidents and public health issues, 27 leaders participated in the seed trainer programme and another 56 participated in the train-the-trainer programme.

Participants attended a lecture exploring the theories behind the project and the actions of putting the programmes together. They

attended practical sessions to get familiar with the contents of the activities and facilitation skills. Leaders spent hours on endless meetings and discussions to guarantee perfect execution and logistics before implementation. Over 110 Scouts, from Cubs to Rovers, attended a oneday field trip at the remote peninsula of Sai Kung Hong Kong held on different days. It is famous for its white-sand beach, and clean and calm seawater.

Scouts had some fun participating in beach games and experiential activities. They took on a hidden trail in the woods and hiked back to the Leadership Training Centre on the other tip of the peninsula where they performed some reflective learning exercises during and after the trip.

“I participated in the Dialogue with Nature online workshop and found it very suitable for Scout members in terms of content and context. They were simple and easily understood. I hope it could continue to be used for other Scout members who did not register in this workshop”, said Ms. D Pang of 1805th EKG. In addition, two other workshops were organized - the Leave No Trace awareness and the Shoreline Protection workshop.
