MEDIA 101 MEDIA.SCOUT.ORG PLATFORM media Scout.org The Image Bank of the World Scout Bureau (media.scout.org) is an exclusive tool for National Scout Organizations (NSOs), accredited members of the press and media, and communication teams which serve the Scout Movement at the World, Regional, and national levels.

Once registered as a client or contributor, members are given free access to thousands of photos featuring Scouting activities worldwide and may download high-resolution photos without watermark.

However, these photos are to be used for editorial purposes only, in national and Regional publications, scout.org articles, social media posts, and communication campaigns.

Members may also contribute to the Image Bank by uploading photos of their NSO’s Scouting activities which will help to showcase and promote their organisation.

Just how public are my archives?

Is there a size limit on the files that can be uploaded?

There are two basic types of users on the media.scout.org platform: contributors and clients.

Indeed you will see these two options on the registration page.

The default configuration of the media.scout.org platform features a front and back end.

Theoretically, there is no limit on the size of file you can upload to your media.scout.org platform

The back end is only accessible to registered contributors and admins. The front end is usually an open online space where members of the public may browse files that have been ‘published’ and for which access has not been restricted.

As a rule of thumb we would recommend your hires files be not less than 3000 pixels on the longest edge. Files of this size will be perfectly usable for publishing in various formats.

Contributors are users who will upload files into the system. Typically these would be photographers, staff members reporting from the field or indeed any individual who wishes to upload material to your archives.

Client users are those may wish to create and share lightboxes or download files from your system. This could be members of your comms team, designers or media contacts seeking imagery to illustrate a story about your work.

It’s important to note that for all files published to the front end of your system though they may be visible, NONE will be downloadable without the user being logged in and/or having appropriate permissions.

However, it is possible to restrict access to even the front end of your platform by creating a gateway landing page where visitors would be required to either register or log in before proceeding to your site.

We would also recommend avoiding uploading very large files using the drag and drop uploader. This is because the drag and drop uploader is dependent on the browser and a single interruption in the connection will cause the entire upload to fail.

For larger uploads - especially in the 100s of MBs we would recommending using FTP as it is generally a more stable upload route.

Do I need to install any software to use media.scout.org?

Are pictures watermarked?

When a user downloads a file from the media. scout.org platform, any existing file information will automatically be embedded in the downloaded file.

media.scout.org is a browser based application which means it will run on pretty much any modern internet browser (Chrome, FireFox, Safari and IE).

This will include all of the data display in the file information fields on the media.scout.org platform.

It’s important to note, however, that RAW files do not allow for embedded file information. Thus sharing RAW files is not considered secure from a copyright perspective.

So if you can browse the internet on your computer you can use media.scout.org media Manager with no need to download and install any additional software. This also means the system will run happily on Macs and PCs too.

Yes they are. All previews on the media.scout. org media Manager system have embedded watermarks. By default these are Scout Branded watermarks. The watermark also appears in hover previews. Thumbnails are not watermarked but they are right click protected against unauthorised downloads.

By embedding file info/metadata into downloaded files, media.scout.org platform is also ensuring your files do not become ‘orphaned’. ‘Orphaned’ files contain no copyright/credit/creator information in the corresponding file info/metadata fields.

Of course the system itself has to be installed on a server somewhere but we’ll do that bit for you and ensure your archive is protected, within reason, from hackers. media.scout.org media Manager runs on a Linux platform.

To edit file information for multiple files browse to your archive (when logged in as a contributor or admin) and select multiple files by using click + shift (click on a file to select it, then hold down the shift button and click on another file. This will select the two files you have clicked on and all those between).

You can write new file information to multiple files, edit existing data (where the data is identical for all files) or ‘add’ file information to files that already have information.

For example you might have written specific captions for a batch of files but wish to add a generic paragraph to all of them. You can do this by selecting the files and then ‘adding’ a few lines of text. This screenshot illustrates the position of the ‘add’ option which is selected by default to prevent accidental replacement of file info/metadata.
