LUXURY WINE

ONE OF THE WORLD`S RAREST AND MOST EXPENSIVE WINES

PÉTRUS Pétrus, one of the world`s rarest and most expensive wines was virtually unheard of 30 years ago. It was only when the Moueix family bought a half share in the property in 1962 that its true potential began to be fully realised. Pétrus is now under the direction of Christian Moueix and oenologist, Jean Claude Berrouet. The 11.4 hectare vineyard is located on a plateau on the highest part of Pomerol in the far east of the appellation. The topsoil and the subsoil at Pétrus is almost all clay (in neigbouring properties the soil is a mixture of gravel-sand or clay-sand) and Merlot flourishes in this soil. Pétrus' vineyard is planted with 95% Merlot. The vines are unusually old and are only replanted aer they reach 70 years of age. The grapes are hand harvested only in the aernoon, when the morning dew has evaporated, so as not to risk even the slightest dilution of quality. The grapes are fermented in cement vats and the wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels for 22-28 months. It is boled unfiltered. Pétrus is extraordinarily rich, powerful and concentrated, oen with characteristics of chocolates, truffles, Asian spices and ultra-ripe, creamy, black fruits. Pétrus is usually approachable aer a decade or so in bole, but the wines from the very greatest years will continue improving for many more years. WE RECOmmEND: 1985 Pétrus, Pomerol Seductive nose of classy black fruits leading on to a palate packed with ripe blackcurrant fruit, roasted coffee, vanilla, and Asian spices. IN 1876 LOUIS ROEDERER CREATED THE NOW FAMOUS CRISTAL

CRISTAL Louis Roederer, a wonderful family-owned Champagne house founded in 1776, has a tremendous reputation for quality.The Louis Roederer House has remained an independent, family-owned company and is now managed by Frédéric Rouzaud, who represents the seventh generation of the lineage. 80% of the firm's needs are supplied by their own, magnificent, 444 acres of vineyard holdings. Louis Roederer's Pinot Noir based non-vintage Brut Premier is powerful and richlyhoneyed and is far superior to most other producers` vintage Champagnes. In 1876 Louis Roederer created the now famous Cristal, at the request of Alexander II. This once intensely sweet wine is now one of the most luscious, deeply flavoured champagnes available, with the '88, '89 and '90 among the greatest Cristals ever released. WE RECOmmEND: 2006 Champagne Louis Roederer, Cristal, Brut - around £350 per bole Jean Baptiste, Cristal’s Cellar Master, tells me that there are two types of Cristal, this is due to Champagne’s location right on the watershed between a continental climate and a maritime climate. In any individual year the climate that is the dominant force dictates the style, a continental vintage leads to pinot noir flourishing, whereas chardonnay loves a maritime dominated year. In 2006 the continental conditions were to the fore and so the resulting wines was rich and powerful, conversely, in 2007 chardonnay flourished in a year that had a long a cool growing season. The result is that the 2007 has a wonderful purity, reminiscent of the finest blanc de blancs. You are greeted by a nose of nougat, with hints of white chocolate and just a touch of lemon. The palate is a pure, fine expression of Champagne, a tiniest hint of redcurrant that then steps aside to allow the main characters of lemon, apple and pear to come through. This is a master class from one of the very top names in Champagne, they clearly have felt no need to try to push this wine and the result is a Champagne that is harmonious and fine, a wine that should appeal to anyone who values restraint over excess.
